Abstract

It has been said that all breast cancers (BC) begin as estrogen (E)-responsive/dependent entities. In initial diagnosis, however, close to 60% of the BCs have already progressed to an E independent state. Given time, virtually all BCs become E-independent, that is, they have circumvented the need for E. These hormone-independent tumors may or may not retain their estrogen receptors (ER)(1).
