Abstract

Although the research has been going on much longer, the clinical use of pacemakers which can change their stimulation rate on the basis of physiological parameters other than atrial rate only started on a significant scale around 1983. This new mode of stimulation was named rate-variable or rate-responsive pacing. With the introduction of the rate-responsive pulse generators, pacemaker treatment entered a new era [1–3]. The importance of rate-variable pacing for clinical practice is evident from the fact that the most frequently implanted pacemaker model today is a rate-responsive system.
