The frequency of dialysis was once per week in the early days (1959–1960), then two or three times weekly for 12, 10, or 8 h using the kiil dialyser (Scribner) until Cambi showed that 4 h weekly was giving good clinical results. This strategy is known to be unphysiological: variations which occur within 2 days are important.

Abstract

Radicals occur widely in chemistry, playing a vital role in many important liquid, solid-state and gas-phase reactions [1]. A radical is a chemical species containing one or more unpaired electrons and may be either charged (radical cation or radical anion) or uncharged (free radical). A biradical, or diradical, is a species containing two separate free electrons. Because radicals are highly reactive they are generally difficult to isolate and detect, and when they can be isolated they are usually present in very low concentrations, making any direct experimental observation quite demanding.

Abstract

Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) or Kaposi’s disease has been especially observed in certain groups of patients: elderly individuals from Mediterranean countries or Central Europe, young Black Africans (“endemic forms”), AIDS patients (with a possibility of rapidly severe evolution of Kaposi’s disease), homosexual males without HIV infection, transplant patients treated with immunosuppressive therapy. The frequency of this disease, formerly relatively rare, and its evolutive course, comparatively slow in the past, have been significantly modified with the emergence of the AIDS epidemic and with the rapidly increasing number of patients subjected to prolonged immunosuppressive therapy to prevent transplant rejection.

The acceleration of knowledge in biological and medical sciences is one of the remarkable features of our times and in particular the development of organ and tissue transplantation has been incredibly rapid ; in the last 30 years we have passed from the first attempts on humans during the 50’ s to multiple organ transplantation including heart, liver, lung and pancreas. There has also been an extraordinary increase in the number of transplants performed so that now 150,000 kidney transplants have been carried out in the last 20 years. In fact every year more than 3,500 transplants are carried out in France alone.

Despite absence of major modifications in the treatment of patients with a renal transplant, significant improvement, in terms of both patient and transplant survival, has been recorded over the last decade. Hopes that methods leading to the specific acceptance of the transplant by the host would be very shortly applicable in the clinic have not yet been fulfilled. More experience in the handling of previously available immunosuppressive drugs or procedures has, however, been associated with a decrease in the complication rate and a increase in transplant successes to a larger extent than usually anticipated (1, 2).
