Faced with numerous and various combinations in the surgical use of tympanic and ossicular allografts, a tympano-ossicular formula based on an ossicular code has been conceived. The use of such a formula makes any discussion on the subject easier and morecomprehensive.

There are more than 20 MSS. of the Arj., or some parts of it, coming from Java, Bali and Lombok, which indicates, to some extent, the popularity this poem used to enjoy among the Javanese and Balinese of the past. These MSS. are distributed among the Library of the University of Leiden (14 MSS., see Pigeaud 1967; 1968), the Library of Museum Pusat, Jakarta (7 MSS, see Poerbatjaraka 1933a; Pigeaud 1968:872–906) and the Library of Gedong Kirtya, Singaraja (1 MSS., see Goris 1935; Pigeaud 1968: 931–72).

The Bravais space cell is used by molecular spectroscopists to obtain the irreducible representation for the lattice vibrations. The crystallographic unit cell may be identical with the Bravais cell or it may be larger by a multiple of two, three or four. This information can be obtained from the capital letter in the x-ray symbol which is used to designate the crystal symmetry. For all crystal structures designated by a symbol P (primitive), the crystallographic unit cell and the Bravais unit cell are identical. Crystal structures designated with capital letters A, B, C, or I are doubly primitive and thus the crystallographic unit cells contain two Bravais cells. Crystal structures designated with capital letters R or F are triply and quadrupoly primitive, respectively, and the crystallographic unit cells contain three and four Bravais cells, respectively. Thus, to obtain the desired Bravais space cell from the crystallographic unit cell, one simply divides the number of molecules in the crystallographic unit cell by the number of lattice points. In summary, the number of molecules in the Bravais space cell ZB is the number of molecules in the crystallographic unit cell (Z) divided by the number of lattice points (LP): ZB = Z/LP and this reduction is summarized.

All forms occurring in the Riim are recorded in the Glossary. Complete line references are given except for very common forms : for these the number of occurrences is given. Variations of spelling, however minute, are recorded. The use of capital letters by the scribe is not recorded, except in the case of U, when it is used as the capital, not of u, but of v. Incorrect forms are pointed out by the addition of the word error in brackets. In a few entries the erroneous forms are so numerous that they are put in a separate list at the end (e.g. thi).
