Macromineral imbalances in ruminants, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, pose a significant challenge to production sustainability and profitability. Heat stress exacerbates these imbalances, negatively impacting physiological functions and productivity. This review examines the effects of heat stress on macromineral levels in ruminants and the need for supplementation under such conditions. Heat stress lowers key macrominerals (Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca + 2, Mg + 2, inorganic P) and disrupts acid-base balance due to thermoregulatory responses and reduced feed intake. Supplementing macrominerals to the diet to achieve higher dietary cation-anion difference helps mitigate heat-related morbidity and maintains ruminant health and productivity. A more practical approach, such as sustained-release macromineral boluses in the rumen, is proposed to provide more consistent benefits. With an increasing number of studies delving into the impact of dietary supplements on combat sports performance, researchers are actively seeking a more efficient dietary supplement for use in these sports. Nonetheless, controversies persist. Hence, we undertook a systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis to discern the most effective dietary supplements in combat sports by synthesizing the available evidence. We conducted a comprehensive search across PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Embase, and SPORTDiscus, covering the period from their establishment to November 2, 2023. Our aim was to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the benefits of various dietary supplements for elite combat sports athletes. The risk of bias in these trials was assessed using the revised Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for Randomized Trials. Subsequently, we employed Bayesian network meta-analysis through R software and Stata 15.0. During the analysis, we performed subgroup analysis based on the type of combat, distinguishing between striking and grappling disciplines. The analysis is based on 67 randomized controlled trials that meet all the inclusion criteria, involving 1026 elite combat sports athletes randomly assigned to 26 different dietary supplements or placebos. Results from the 50 trials included in the network meta-analysis indicate that compared to a placebo, sodium bicarbonate combined with caffeine (SMD: 2.3, 95% CrI: 1.5, 3.2), caffeine (SMD: 0.72, 95% CrI: 0.53, 0.93), beta-alanine (SMD: 0.58, 95% CrI: 0.079, 1.1), and sodium bicarbonate (SMD: 0.54, 95% CrI: 0.30, 0.81) was associated with a statistically significant increase in blood lactate concentrations. Compared to placebo, caffeine (SMD: 0.27, 95% CrI: 0.12, 0.41) was associated with a statistically significant increase in the final heart rate. Compared to placebo, creatine combined with sodium bicarbonate (SMD: 2.2, 95% CrI: 1.5, 3.1), creatine (SMD: 1.0, 95% CrI: 0.38, 1.6), and sodium bicarbonate (SMD: 0.42, 95% CrI: 0.18, 0.66) was associated with a statistically significant increase in mean power. Compared to placebo, creatine combined with sodium bicarbonate (SMD: 1.6, 95% CrI: 0.85, 2.3), creatine (SMD: 1.1, 95% CrI: 0.45, 1.7), and sodium bicarbonate (SMD: 0.35, 95% CrI: 0.11, 0.57) was associated with a statistically significant increase in peak power. Compared to placebo, caffeine (SMD: 1.4, 95% CrI: 0.19, 2.7) was associated with a statistically significant increase in the number of kicks. Compared to placebo, caffeine (SMD: 0.35, 95% CrI: 0.081, 0.61) was associated with a statistically significant increase in the number of throws. This study suggests that a range of dietary supplements, including caffeine, sodium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate combined with caffeine, creatine, creatine combined with sodium bicarbonate, and beta-alanine can improve the athletic performance of elite combat sports athletes. Purpose of Review: Supplementation of nicotinamide mononucleotides (NMN) has been claimed to improve metabolic function. We reviewed human randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of NMN to evaluate its effect on markers of glucose and lipid metabolism. Recent Findings: Eight RCTs on NMN (dosage ranged 250–2000 mg/d for a duration of 14 days to 12 weeks) involving a total of 342 middle-age/older adults (49% females, mainly non-diabetic) reporting at least one outcome on glucose control or lipid profile published in 2021–2023 were reviewed. The random-effects meta-analyses indicated no significant benefit of NMN on fasting glucose, fasting insulin, glycated hemoglobin, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance and lipid profile. Summary: Based on the small number of RCTs involving mainly relatively healthy adults, short-term supplementation of NMN of 250-2000 mg/d did not show significantly positive impacts on glucose control and lipid profile. Research into innovative non-pharmacological therapeutic routes via the utilization of natural elements like zinc (Zn) has been motivated by the discovery of new severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV2) variants and the ineffectiveness of certain vaccination treatments during COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, research on SARS-COV-2's viral cellular entry and infection mechanism has shown that it may seriously harm reproductive system cells and impair testicular function in young men and adolescents, which may lead to male infertility over time. In this context, we conducted a narrative review to give an overview of the data pertaining to Zn's critical role in testicular tissue, the therapeutic use of such micronutrients to enhance male fertility, as well as in the potential mitigation of COVID-19, with the ultimate goal of elucidating the hypothesis of the potential use of Zn supplements to prevent the possible harmful effects of SARS-COV2 infection on testis physiological function, and subsequently, on male fertility. Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS), a byproduct of ethanol production, has gained recognition as a viable alternative feed supplement for ram lambs because of its nutritional profile and cost-effectiveness. This study evaluated the effect of supplementing straw-based diets with different levels of DDGS on the growth performance and economic viability of growing ram lambs. A total of 24 ram lambs (16.07 ± 1.78 kg; 4 months old) were assigned to one of four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design: a basal diet (sorghum stover) supplemented with a concentrate mix (18% crude protein) at 2% body weight (D1) or the basal diet supplemented with DDGS at 1% (D2), 1.5% (D3), or 2% (D4) of body weight for 90 days. Data were analyzed using Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). While the total feed intake was comparable (P = 0.695) among the lambs fed different experimental diets, the D3 and D4 diets significantly improved the average daily gain and reduced the feed conversion ratio compared to the D1 diet (P < 0.001). However, the D3-fed lambs showed a cost-effective gain compared to the D4-fed lambs (P < 0.001). Although the D4 group tended to have a higher pre-slaughter weight than the D1 group (P = 0.083), the empty body and hot carcass weights were comparable among all groups (P > 0.05). Similarly, dressing percentage, wholesale cut yield, body wall thickness, loin-eye area, visceral organ yield, carcass composition, and meat chemical composition were statistically similar among the dietary groups (P > 0.05). Based on the growth performance and cost economics of the present study it was concluded that supplementing DDGS at 1.5% of body weight to a stover-based diet in growing ram lambs seems to be a viable and economical option. Summary: A retrospective analysis was performed to evaluate the frequency of vitamin D blood testing in individuals from the Padua province, Veneto, Italy from 2005 to 2016. A significant increase in the frequency of vitamin D blood tests, particularly in females was observed and in individuals with severe vitamin D deficiency (Class I). Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to negative health outcomes that extend beyond bone-related conditions. The frequency of vitamin D blood testing in residents from the Padua province, (Veneto, Italy) from 2005 to 2016 was evaluated. Methods: Data were retrospectively retrieved from blood test databases (Laboratory Medicine Unit, Padua University Hospital) and information on number of vitamin D blood tests performed on residents from 2005 to 2016 was collected. Data were stratified by sex and ten birth cohorts from 1901 to 2016. Blood tests were classified into five vitamin D classes: I < 50 nmol/L, II 50–74.9 nmol/L, III 75–149 nmol/L, IV 150–250 nmol/L, and V > 250–1000 nmol/L. Blood test trends were analyzed as blood test rate and vitamin D class rate/resident population. Population analysis was analyzed by incidence rates and stratified by vitamin D class. Results: 293,013 vitamin D blood tests were conducted between 2005 and 2016 across 10 birth cohorts. Females accounted for 75% of tests and fewer were conducted in the youngest and oldest birth cohorts. Sex differences in vitamin D blood test frequency were observed; adjusted rates ranging from 1.7 to 35.6% for males and 8 to 81% for females from 2005 to 2016. Crude incidence rates (per 1000 from 2005 to 2016) varied from 1.5 to 10.8‰ for males and 7 to 19.4‰ for females. Crude blood test rates for vitamin D deficiency (Class I) increased from 1.1 to 9.9‰ in 2016 for males and 5 to 17.3‰ for females. Crude incidence rates (from 2005 to 2016) for Class I were 9.7–57.1‰ in males and 43.6–92.4‰ in females. Bullseye and Pacu fish processing waste were valorized through its conversion into functional protein isolates, followed by the utilization of recovered proteins to supplement oat-based cookies at different levels (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 g/100 g) and baking temperatures (100, 150, 170, 180, 190 ˚C). With different replacement ratios and baking temperatures, the best selection was made at (4 and 6%) and baking temperatures (160 and 170 ˚C) for BPI (Bullseye protein isolate) and PPI (Pacu protein isolate) based cookies, respectively based on sensory and textural characteristics. The developed products were analyzed for its nutritional, physical, textural, and sensory quality. No significant differences were found in the moisture and ash contents of the cookies from different lots, while the protein content was highest for cookies with 6% PPI. The spread ratio was lower reported for the control cookies compared to the fish protein isolate-based counterpart (p < 0.05), and it decreased with increasing thickness of cookies. Significantly higher total essential amino acid values were obtained in cookies supplemented with 6% Pacu protein isolates, whereas 4% Bullseye protein isolate-supplemented cookies were higher in total non-essential amino acid content. The total plate count was higher in control cookies (0.35 ± 0.33 cfu/g) compared to fish protein isolate-supplemented cookies. The hardness values were maximum for control group cookies (19.14 ± 0.98 N) compared to protein isolate incorporated cookies (17.22 ± 1.05 N and 16.26 ± 0.9 N). Introduction: Knee pain is a major cause of disability worldwide, particularly among the elderly. Current treatments, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics, often lead to adverse effects. Krill oil is being explored as a potential alternative, however its efficacy in managing knee symptoms remains unclear. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched until May 2024 for studies comparing krill oil and placebo in knee pain patients. Endpoints included knee pain, stiffness, physical function, and lipid profiles (HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, and total cholesterol). A restricted maximum likelihood random-effects model with standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) was used. A trial sequential analysis was conducted to evaluate further research implications. Results: We included five trials with 700 patients using krill oil for knee pain. Results showed no significant difference between krill oil and placebo for knee pain, knee stiffness, and lipid profiles. However, krill oil demonstrated a significant small effect in improving knee physical function (SMD -0.24, 95% CI [-0.41; -0.08], I2 = 0%).Trial sequential analysis provided certainty that krill oil enhances knee physical function compared to placebo and indicated no improvement in knee pain, but the findings for knee stiffness need to be confirmed by further research. Conclusion: This study found that krill oil supplementation did not significantly improve knee pain, stiffness, or lipid profile, although it may help knee physical function. Introduction: Pregnant women with a history of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) are at high risk of developing nutrient deficiencies, leading to greater challenges to reach nutritional requirements. This study compared nutrient status of women using specialized "weight loss surgery" multivitamin supplementation (WLS-MVS) to those using standard supplementation (sMVS) during pregnancy following MBS. Methods: Multicenter observational cohort study including 119 pregnant women at 41.0 (18.5–70.0) months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB, n = 80) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG, n = 39). Routine blood samples were analyzed every trimester (T1, T2, T3), and micronutrient serum levels were compared between WLS-MVS and sMVS users. Results: During pregnancy after RYGB, WLS-MVS users demonstrated higher serum concentrations of hemoglobin (7.4 [7.2, 7.5] vs. 7.0 [6.8, 7.3] mmol/L), ferritin (23.2 [15.0, 35.7] vs. 13.7 [8.4, 22.4] µg/L), and folic acid (31.4 [28.7, 34.2] vs. 25.4 [21.3, 29.4] nmol/L) and lower serum vitamin B6 levels (T1: 90.6 [82.0, 99.8] vs. 132.1 [114.6, 152.4] nmol/L) compared to sMVS users. Iron deficiencies and elevated serum vitamin B6 levels were less prevalent in the WLS-MVS group. During pregnancy after SG, WLS-MVS users showed higher serum vitamin D concentrations (89.7 [77.6, 101.8] vs. 65.4 [53.3, 77.4] nmol/L) and lower serum vitamin B1 concentrations (T2: 137.4 [124.2, 150.6] vs. 161.6 [149.0, 174.1] nmol/L, T3: 133.9 [120.1, 147.7] vs. 154.7 [141.9, 167.5] nmol/L) compared to sMVS users. Conclusion: Low maternal concentrations of micronutrients are highly prevalent during pregnancy after MBS. The use of specialized multivitamin supplementation generally resulted in higher serum levels during pregnancy compared to standard supplementation. Supplementation with antioxidant vitamins is common among amateur and elite athletes. It is thought to cause a reduction in the muscle damage that results from exercised-induced oxidative stress, increasing the ability to improve performance markers. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to evaluate the effects of supplementation with antioxidant vitamins (A, C, and E), alone and/or combination of sports performance (maximum oxygen consumption, maximum strength) in athletic populations. Eligibility criteria included only randomized clinical trial studies written in English, Spanish and Portuguese with no restriction on the year of publication. Case studies, observational studies, quasi-experimental trials, literature reviews, and animal studies were excluded from this systematic review. Eligible studies were searched on PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, SciElo, and Google Scholar. To minimize the risk of publication bias, searches were also conducted in the grey literature. Database searches occurred from June to September of 2022. Thirteen randomized controlled trials with a total of 398 participants. The risk of bias was assessed and presented low overall quality. In general, markers of sports performance and overall performance were not affected by antioxidant vitamin supplementation (SMD = 0.00, 95%CI − 0.43, 0.20, P = 0.98). Similarly, evaluations of aerobic resistance (SMD = − 0.06, 95%CI − 0.31, 0.19, P = 0.66) as well as muscle strength (SMD = 0.04, 95% CI − 0.31, 0.39, P = 0.81) were not influenced by supplementation. Thus, the results of this meta-analysis of clinical trials demonstrate that supplementation with isolated and/or combined antioxidant vitamins is not associated with improved sports performance. We aimed to evaluate the metabolic and performance differences in primiparous Nellore cows, which became pregnant at 14 or 24-mo old. Thirty-eight cows with 202 ± 5 days of gestation were divided into two treatments according to breeding age: 14 or 24-mo. Cows were evaluated for body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), carcass characteristics, milk yield, calves’s performance, and blood characteristics. The animals were managed in eight paddocks under continuous grazing and evaluated from 90 d before parturition until 240 d after calving. We observed an interaction between breeding age and time (P < 0.01) for cow BW. Both breeding age categories experienced BW loss during parturition, with a concurrent decrease in BCS. However, following their first calving, the BW of 24-mo cows remained stable (P > 0.05), whereas 14-mo cows exhibited a gradual recovery in BW after parturition (P < 0.05). Milk yield was greater in 24-mo animals (P < 0.01), but decreased with increasing milking days (p < 0.05) for both groups. The weight gain calves from the heifers bred at 24-mo was greater (P < 0.01), which reflected in greater BW at weaning. The beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB) concentration was greater before calving and a marked decrease after parturition (P < 0.05). The 24-mo cows had greater blood β-OHB (P < 0.01) at prepartum and 30 days after calving. Blood progesterone was greater in 24-mo cows (P > 0.05). Primiparous beef cows that conceive at either 14 or 24-months of age exhibit distinct nutritional requirements and metabolic profiles. Notably, cows that conceive at 24-months of age have the advantage of weaning heavier calves and displaying a more consistent reproductive cycle following their first calving than cows that conceive at 14-months. Soybean molasses (SBMO) is a byproduct derived from the production of soy protein concentrate, obtained through solubilization in water and alcohol. The utilization of SBMO as an animal feed ingredient shows promising potential, primarily due to its low cost and as a potential energy concentrate. This study aimed to assess the intake, digestibility, ruminal parameters (pH and ruminal ammonia - NH3), nitrogen retention (NR) and microbial protein synthesis in grazing beef cattle supplemented with SBMO as a substitute for corn during the rainy season. Five Nellore (10-month-old) bulls with an average initial weight of 246 ± 11.2 kg were utilized in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. The animals were housed in five paddocks, each consisting of 0.34 ha of Marandu grass (Urochloa brizantha). Five isonitrogenous protein-energy supplements (300 g crude protein [CP]/kg supplement) were formulated, with SBMO replacing corn at varying levels (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, or 1.00 g–1 g). The supplements were provided daily at a quantity of 2.0 kg-1 animal. The inclusion of SBMO at any level of corn substitution did not significantly affect the intake of pasture dry matter or total dry matter (P > 0.10). Likewise, the intake of CP and, consequently, the ruminal concentration of NH3 did not differ among the SBMO levels. Increasing the inclusion of SBMO did not have a significant impact on NR (P > 0.10), indicating that animals receiving supplements containing 100% SBMO as a substitute for corn may perform similarly to animals receiving supplements with 100% corn (0% SBMO). Soybean molasses represents a viable alternative energy source for grazing beef cattle during the rainy season and can entirely replace corn without adversely affecting animal nutritional performance. The silkworm Bombyx mori L. converts plant protein into silk. In silk producing countries mulberry leaves are primarily used to feed silkworms, however, recent studies have shown that nutritional supplements in the diet improved the morphological parameters of larvae and cocoons. In the current paper we investigated the effects of whey protein dissolved in water on the larval development of B. mori, cocoon production, mechanical properties of silk threads, silk gland morphology, and mRNA expression of the L-fibroin and sericin-1 genes. The results showed that whey protein supplementation did not affect larval development, and the histological structure of the silk glands remained intact. The water group and whey protein 10% group yielded the highest efficiency of silk protein synthesis. Mechanical testing of silk threads demonstrated that supplementation with whey protein did not affect the quality. The groups fed with whey protein supplements showed similar expression of L-fibroin gene, and higher expression of the sericin-1 gene. Our findings suggest that whey protein does not adversely affect the silk glands and could serve as a basis to produce artificial food for the silkworm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitamin D is important for musculoskeletal health. Concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the most commonly measured metabolite, vary markedly around the world and are influenced by many factors including sun exposure, skin pigmentation, covering, season and supplement use. Whilst overt vitamin D deficiency with biochemical consequences presents an increased risk of severe sequelae such as rickets, osteomalacia or cardiomyopathy and usually warrants prompt replacement treatment, the role of vitamin D supplementation in the population presents a different set of considerations. Here the issue is to keep, on average, the population at a level whereby the risk of adverse health outcomes in the population is minimised. This position paper, which complements recently published work from the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases, addresses key considerations regarding vitamin D assessment and intervention from the population perspective. Summary: This position paper, on behalf of the International Osteoporosis Foundation Vitamin D Working Group, summarises the burden and possible amelioration of vitamin D deficiency in global populations. Iron deficiency is a widespread micronutrient deficiency, impacting over 30% of the global population. Iron Folic Acid supplement is recommended for pregnant women to counter iron deficiency anemia and neural tube anomalies. Although Iron Folic Acid supplementation is integral to Ethiopian antenatal care, one in four women in Ethiopia experiences anemia during pregnancy suggesting poor compliance. This study aimed to investigate compliance level and associated factors of Iron Folic Acid supplementation among pregnant women attending antenatal care in Wuchale Woreda of North Shoa Zone, Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 302 pregnant women from March 20 to April 5, 2021, who were selected using a systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected through face-to-face interview, entered epi-data, and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for analysis. A multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with compliance level. All the results were presented with 95% confidence intervals. The compliance with Iron Folic Acid supplementation was 47.0%. Residing nearest to the health facility (AOR = 2.46; 95% CI 1.32, 4.57), initiating antenatal care at health center (AOR = 2.23; 95% CI 1.17, 4.51), having a family size of 4 and above (AOR = 4.99; 95% CI 2.43, 10.24), and receiving information from health extension workers (AOR = 5.52; 95% CI 1.30, 23.54) increased compliance with Iron Folic Acid supplementation. Less than half of the pregnant women were compliant with Iron Folic Acid utilization. There is a need to prioritize promoting the importance of Iron Folic Acid supplementation through health education particularly by targeting pregnant women with identified factors. Purpose: Citrulline (CIT) and beetroot extract (BR) have separately shown benefits in rowing performance-related outcomes. However, effects of combined supplementation remain to be elucidated. The main purpose of this research was to study the effects of 1 week of daily co-supplementation of 3.5 g BR (500 mg NO3−) plus 6 g CIT on aerobic performance, maximal strength, and high-intensity power and peak stroke in elite male rowers compared to a placebo and to a BR supplementation. Methods: 20 elite rowers participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial completing 1 week of supplementation in each group of study: Placebo group (PLAG); BR group (BRG); and BR + CIT group (BR-CITG). 3 main physical tests were performed: aerobic performance, Wingate test and CMJ jump, and metabolic biomarkers and physiological outcomes were collected. Results: The Wingate all-out test showed no between-condition differences in peak power, mean power, relative power, or fatigue index (P > 0.05), but clearance of lactate was better in BR-CITG (P < 0.05). In the performance test, peak power differed only between PLAG and BR-CITG (P = 0.036), while VO2peak and maximum heart rate remained similar. CMJ jumping test results showed no between-condition differences, and blood samples were consistent (P > 0.200). Conclusion: Supplementation with 3.5 g of BR extract plus 6 g of CIT for 7 days improved lactate clearance after Wingate test and peak power in a performance test. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate whether the clinical outcomes of cycles with frozen embryo transfer (FET) in hormonal replacement treatment supplemented with dydrogesterone (DYD) following detection of low circulating levels of progesterone (P4) were comparable to the results of cycles with otherwise normal serum P4 values. Methods: Extended analyses of a retrospective cohort that included FET cycles performed between July 2019 and March 2022 after a cycle of artificial endometrial preparation using valerate-estradiol and micronized vaginal P4 (400 mg twice daily). Whenever the serum P4 value was considered low on the morning of the planned transfer, 10 mg of DYD three times a day was added as a supplement. Only single-embryo transfers of a blastocyst were considered. The primary endpoint was live birth rate. Results: Five-hundred thirty-five FET cycles were analyzed, of which 136 (25.4%) underwent treatment with DYD. There were 337 pregnancies (63%), 207 live births (38.6%), and 130 miscarriages (38.5%). The P4 values could be modeled by a gamma distribution, with a mean of 14.5 ng/ml and a standard deviation of 1.95 ng/ml. The variables female age on the day of FET, ethnicity, and weight were associated with a variation in the serum P4 values. There were no differences in the results between cycles with or without the indication for DYD supplementation. Objective: To assess the effect of macronutrient and micronutrient supplementation on body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin (Hb), CD4 count, triglyceride levels, and morbidity among adolescents with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) living in India. Methods: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial was conducted among 80 adolescents (10–19 y) with HIV on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for a minimum of 6 mo using simple randomization. Participants in the intervention arm received 400 kcal and 15 g protein as a powder daily and multivitamin tablets thrice weekly for 3 mo. Those in the placebo arm received a similar-appearing sachet containing 100 kcal and 2 g protein daily and a placebo tablet thrice weekly. Weight, height, BMI, Hb, CD4 count, triglycerides, and number of intercurrent illnesses were measured at 3 and 6 mo. Results: At 6 mo, the intervention group showed an increase in weight from 36.4 ± 10.9 kg to 39.7 ± 8.5 kg and a significant increase in BMI from 16.6 ± 2.3 kg/m2 to 17.5 ± 2.3 kg/m2. Increase in CD4 count in the placebo arm was more than that in the intervention arm, but the difference between the arms was not statistically significant. Intervention group showed a pronounced rise in Hb from 9.7 ± 2.3 g/dL to 11.4 ± 1.6 g/dL, significant reduction in triglyceride levels from 99.2 ± 92.7 mg/dL to 81.0 ± 12.8 mg/dL and reduction in intercurrent illnesses from 32.5% to none. Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of probiotics administration on clinical status and metabolic profiles in diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients. Methods: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted among 72 DR patients. Subjects received probiotics including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium langum, Bifidobacterium lactis daily (2 × 109 CFU/each strain) (n = 36) or placebo (starch) (n = 36) and were instructed to take one capsule daily for 12 weeks. Finally, 55 participants [probiotic group (n = 30) and placebo group (n = 25)] completed the study. Fasting blood samples were obtained at baseline and after the 12-week intervention to determine metabolic profiles. To determine the effects of probiotic supplementation on clinical symptoms and biochemical variables, we used one-way repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: After the 12-week intervention, compared with the placebo, probiotic supplementation significantly decreased means serum insulin concentrations (Probiotic group: -4.9 ± 6.5vs. Placebo group: 3.0 ± 7.7 µIU/mL, Ptime×group<0.001), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (Probiotic group: -2.5 ± 3.8 vs. Placebo group: 1.1 ± 2.7, Ptime×group<0.001) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) (Probiotic group: -0.4 ± 0.7 vs. Placebo group: -0.02 ± 0.2%, Ptime×group=0.01), and significantly increased the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) (Probiotic group: 0.02 ± 0.03 vs. Placebo group: -0.03 ± 0.04, Ptime×group<0.001). There was no significant effect of probiotic administration on other metabolic profiles and clinical symptoms. Conclusions: Overall, probiotic supplementation after 12 weeks in DR patients had beneficial effects on few metabolic profiles. Iron deficiency anemia is a public health problem among adolescents that could be addressed by weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (IFAS). The Ethiopian government piloted weekly IFAS in schools, where its effectiveness depends on compliance. We assessed the determinants of compliance with the weekly IFAS in Ethiopia. A school-based survey was conducted in 506 adolescent girls on weekly IFAS. Compliance was considered when girls reported WIFAS for at least three months without discontinuation. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression models were modeled, with odds ratios reported. Out of 506, 25.8% had limited access to educational resources, and 79.4% had no information on IFAS. Among these, 47.9% (95% CI: 45.5–49.9%) had poor compliance with weekly IFAS. Non-compliance was mainly due to school absenteeism (55.9%). Important predictors of poor compliance were adolescent girls' marital status (AOR = 5.21; 1.55–17.6), academic standing (AOR = 4.37; 2.20–8.70), family income (AOR = 1.85; 1.09–3.15), access to health education materials (AOR = 1.57; 1.02–2.40), problems with IFAS (AOR = 2.44; 1.26–4.74), a discouraging home environment for the program (AOR = 2.27; 1.54–3.34), and a lack of knowledge of the IFAS program (AOR = 1.40; 0.97–2.03). The aim of study was to evaluate the effect of selenium supplementation on disease activity, inflammation, and oxidative stress in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study was a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial on 59 patients with RA. Participants were randomly divided to receive 200 μg/day of selenium or a placebo for 12 weeks. The disease activity score (DAS.CRP and DAS.ESR), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), fasting blood glucose, lipids, antibodies to cyclic citrullinated protein (anti-CCP), nitric oxide, glutathione, and total antioxidant capacity were assessed. The mean of DAS.CRP and DAS.ESR decreased significantly within both study groups after the intervention. However, the between-group comparisons revealed no significant differences. The CRP levels decreased significantly in the selenium group, and this decrease was near the significance level compared to the placebo (P = 0.05). However, after adjusting for baseline values, the observed difference between groups did not remain significant. In addition, the values of ESR and anti-CCP decreased significantly within the selenium group. Although, between-group comparison did not statistically significant, the change in ESR and anti-CCP in the selenium group was small clinically relevant compared to the placebo [the effect size (95% CI) for ESR: 0.38 (− 0.14, 0.89), and for anti-CCP: 0.32 (− 0.2, 0.83)]. Our study showed that selenium caused a small clinically relevant improvement in some RA biomarkers such as ESR and anti-CCP. Future studies that evaluate the effects of novel forms of supplements such as selenium nanoparticles on the clinical symptoms and biomarkers of RA are suggested. The hypothesis was tested that the performance of lactating ewes is affected by the supplementation level and pasture management. Two supplementation levels (0.5 and 1.0% of body weight, BW) and two pasture managements (mowed and non-mowed) were tested. Forty adult ewes (2 years old) with an average weight at lambing of 62.97 ± 7.0 kg (day 0) and an average the body condition score of 2.5 points (day 0) were evaluated. Verminosis was monitored with periodic deworming. The number of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) of ewes at lambing was used as a covariate for performance assessments. Ewes lost an average of 7.5 kg over the 90 days post-partum (12% BW). The weaning rate was 53%. The body condition of the ewes was influenced by the post-partum period. The ewes mobilized their body reserves in the first 30 days of lactation. Mowing management negatively affected the nutritive value of the forage. Supplementation with 0.5% BW was sufficient for nutritional management post-partum. Pasture management (mowed vs. not mowed) cannot prevent post-partum weight loss. Background: Patients with advanced liver disease often have vitamin D deficiency, but the daily dosages of vitamin D3 needed to raise their serum 25-hydrodroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations are unknown. Objective: We aimed to establish the dose–response relationship between vitamin D3 and 25(OH)D in patients with liver cirrhosis. Design: An open-label study of orally-administered vitamin D3 (gelcaps) was conducted in patients with liver cirrhosis using a tiered-dosing regimen: 4,000 IU/d for baseline 25(OH)D ≤ 15 ng/mL and 2,000 IU/d for baseline 25(OH)D > 15 to ≤ 25 ng/mL (NCT01575717). Supplementation continued for 6 months, or until liver transplantation. Changes in 25(OH)D were measured after ≥ 3 months. Dose–response data on 48 patients (21 receiving 4000 IU/d and 27 receiving 2,000 IU/d) reporting ≥ 80% adherence were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE). Results: Among the 48 patients, 39 (81%) had 25(OH)D > 20 ng/mL while on supplements, and none experienced hypercalcemia. The magnitude of the increase in 25(OH)D was approximately twofold greater in patients receiving the higher dose. The mean incremental increase was 5.1 ng/ml ± 3.9 of 25(OH)D per 1000 IU/d of vitamin D3. Multivariable models demonstrated a significant positive relationship between baseline 25(OH)D and serum albumin (p < 0.01) and hemoglobin (p = 0.01), and a negative relationship with the MELD score (p < 0.01) and total bilirubin (p < 0.01). Conclusions: A two-tiered dosing regimen of daily oral vitamin D3 supplementation safely raised 25(OH)D concentrations in the majority of adults with liver cirrhosis who were adherent to supplement use. Purpose: To reach a consensus among obstetrics and gynecology experts on the effects of micronutrient supplementation on fertility and pregnancy to aid clinicians in decision-making and create a unified approach to managing micronutrient deficiencies in women, by performing a modified Delphi study. Methods: A three-round modified Delphi process was conducted among a Delphi panel of 38 Egyptian experts to define recommendations regarding the role of supplementation on fertility and pregnancy in women of reproductive age. A literature review was performed and supporting evidence was graded to help guide the recommendations based on available evidence. Results: A total of 62 statements were developed for discussion and voting. Out of the 62 statements, 60 statements reached expert consensus. Statements were divided into two domains. The first domain discussed the role of supplementation in fertility: optimizing natural fertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI), unexplained infertility, and endometriosis, whereas the second domain was concerned with the role of supplementation in pregnancy during the prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal periods. Conclusion: In this work, a modified Delphi methodology was implemented to reach a consensus on the use of micronutrient supplementation in women of reproductive age. These recommendations can help clinicians in their practice, guide future research, and identify gaps in the market for the pharmaceutical industry. Background: Osteoporosis is a common concern in the elderly that leads to fragile bones. Calcium supplementation plays a crucial role in improving bone health, reducing fracture risk, and supporting overall skeletal strength in this vulnerable population. However, there is conflicting evidence on the safety of calcium supplements in elderly individuals. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the adherence, safety and tolerability of calcium citrate supplementation in elderly osteopenic subjects. Methods: In this non-interventional, prospective, multicenter study, subjects received daily 500 mg calcium citrate supplementation for up to one year. Adherence was calculated based on compliance and persistence. Safety was assessed through adverse reactions (ARs), deaths, and clinical laboratory evaluations. Results: A total of 268 Caucasian subjects (91.4% female, mean age 70 ± 4.5 years) participated in the study. Mean adherence to treatment was 76.6 ± 29.5% and half of subjects had an adherence of 91% and ~ 33% of participants achieved complete (100%) adherence. ARs were reported by nine (3.9%) subjects, primarily gastrointestinal disorders, with no serious ARs. The frequency of all adverse events (including ARs) was significantly higher in subjects with adherence of < 80% (41.6%; 32/77) vs. those with adherence ≥ 80% (11%; 16/145, p < 0.0001). Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased from baseline to follow-up visit (change of -2.8 ± 13.9 mmHg, p = 0.0102 and -2.1 ± 10.4 mmHg, p = 0.0116, respectively). Conclusion: This study demonstrated favorable adherence to calcium citrate supplementation in elderly osteopenic subjects. Aim: Both an acute bout of resistance exercise (RE) and caffeine consumption can significantly alter hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, and arterial stiffness, which may correlate with adverse cardiovascular events. However, effects of an acute bout of RE and caffeine are unclear in resistance-trained women. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an acute bout of RE with repetitions to failure on squat and bench press, with or without caffeine, on performance, resting and recovery measures of hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, as well as arterial stiffness in resistance-trained women. Methods: Eleven women participated in a double-blind, placebo controlled cross-over design in which they consumed caffeine (4 mg/kg) or placebo at least 72 h apart. Sixty minutes following ingestion, participants performed two sets of 10 repetitions followed by a third set to failure on squat and bench press. Hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, and arterial stiffness were measured at rest, 60 min post-ingestion, and three minutes and 10 min following RE. Results: Data demonstrated caffeine has no additive effects on performance, hemodynamics, autonomic modulation, or arterial stiffness (p > 0.05) before or following an acute bout of RE in resistance-trained women compared to a placebo. Conclusions: Resistance-trained women may not observe any alteration to RE performance on the squat and bench press in terms of repetitions to failure following caffeine ingestion. In addition, the data from the present study suggests that there may also not be any further negative effects on the cardiovasculature if caffeine is consumed prior to the RE bout. Background: Enterohepatic bilirubin circulation is one of the determinants of neonatal jaundice. Objective: To evaluate the role of oral zinc in reducing serum bilirubin in term neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. Study design: Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial Participants: 106 term neonates with jaundice within the phototherapy range admitted to a level III neonatal intensive care unit. Intervention: Neonates were randomized and allocated to receive either oral zinc sulfate (5 mg/day) or matching placebo for 5 days. Both groups received conventional phototherapy as per American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines. Outcomes: Primary: Reduction in total serum bilirubin levels at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr after intervention. Secondary: Duration of phototherapy, and hospital stay. Results: The mean (SD) total serum bilirubin levels in zinc and placebo groups were 15.3 (2.85) vs 17.1 (2.21) mg/dL (MD 1.74; P<0.001) at 24 h; 11.7 (4.46) vs. 14.62 (3.83) mg/dL (MD 2.89; P<0.001) at 48 h; 6.7 (4.77) vs 9.5 (3.70) mg/dL (MD 2.79; P <0.001) at 72 h; and 5.1 (3.95) vs 6.5 (3.70) mg/dL (MD 1,49; P=0.045) after 72 hr, respectively. The mean (SD) duration of phototherapy was significantly lower in zinc group than placebo group [53.42 (19.62) vs 71.4 (19.43) h; P<0.001]. There was no significant difference in hospital stay between the two groups [mean (SD) 81.05 (19.43) vs 86.25 (20.02) h; P= 0.227]. Conclusion: Oral zinc sulfate supplementation at a dose of 5 mg once a day along with phototherapy significantly reduced total and indirect serum bilirubin levels and also reduced the total duration of phototherapy required in the term neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, with minimal or no adverse effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding selenium-enriched yeast (SE) in the diet of dairy goats during 60 days of lactation and its effect on productive, thermoregulatory, and hormonal responses of animals managed in a semi-arid region. Sixteen Saanen × Toggenburg crossbred goats were used in a completely randomized design. Goats were weighed, and their milk yield was monitored weekly. Before the animals entered the treatments and at every 20-day milk producing, blood samples were collected to determine the SE levels. At 20, 40, and days of the lactation cycle, individual milk samples were collected to determine composition, casein, urea nitrogen, and selenium content. Measurements of respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), coat surface temperature (CST), and epidermal temperature (ET) were performed weekly during the experimental period in two shifts, one in the morning (9 am) and the other in the afternoon (3 pm). No difference (P > 0.05) was detected for body weight, milk yield, composition, selenium concentration, and urea nitrogen. Lower RR and ET (P < 0.05) were observed for animals that received SE supplementation. Thyroid hormone concentrations were similar between treatments (P > 0.05). The positive results of the SE supplementation were concentrated in thermoregulatory responses, and there was no effect on productive, hormonal responses, and plasmatic concentration of selenium in the milk. Background: Bariatric surgery is commonly used in patients with body mass indexes over 35 kg/m and obesity-related comorbidities. Despite the significant clinical benefits of bariatric surgery, nutritional deficiencies post-surgery remain a challenge for both patient and healthcare provider [Toninello et al. in Nutrients 13:1565, 2021, Gasmi et al. in Eur J Nutr 61:55–67, 2022]. Nutritional supplementation is a way of reducing the likelihood of postoperative deficiencies; however, prior studies have shown varying degrees of mostly poor to moderate patient adherence [Spetz et al. in Obes Res Clin Pract 16:407–412, 2022, Mahawar et al. in Obes Surg 29:1551–1556, 2019, Santonicola et al. in J Am Nutr Assoc 41:11–19, 2022, Sherf Dagan et al. in Obes Surg 27:2258–2271, 2017]. Our present study aims to provide insights into the micronutrient biochemical profile in patients previously found to be compliant with supplementation following roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG). Methods: An 11-point outpatient survey was administered to consecutive patients ≥ 18 years who had undergone either RYGB or VSG to determine adherence with nutritional supplementation. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed to determine preoperative and postoperative lab values, including vitamins A, B1, B12, and D, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), iron binding capacity, transferrin, ferritin, folate, iron, albumin, hemoglobin A1C, zinc, glomerular filtration rate (GFR, and liver function values. Values were classified as "abnormal" or "normal." Preoperative and postoperative values were compared for differences. Postoperative values were also compared between RYGB and VSG. Results: There were no significant differences between preoperative and postoperative values for any nutritional marker aside from vitamin B12. A total of 51/60 patients (85.0%) had normal preoperative B12 measurements, compared with 40/65 (61.5%) patients postoperatively (P = 0.03). Notably, of 25 "abnormal" postoperative measurements, 20 (80%) were elevated values. There were no differences in postoperative deficiencies between RYGB and VSG. Conclusions: Patients in our sample did not have worsened micronutrient deficiencies following bariatric surgery, and there were no differences in micronutrient deficiencies between surgical technique. Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is common among populations globally, and in Asia and Malaysia. The purpose of this Position Paper is to propose recommendations for both clinicians and non-clinicians to promote vitamin D sufficiency in Malaysian adults. Formation of a national multisector, multidisciplinary alliance is also proposed to progress initiatives relating to safe sun exposure, adequate vitamin D intake through food fortification, and vitamin D supplementation for high-risk groups. Methods: Literature reviews were undertaken to inform summaries of the following: vitamin D status globally and in Asian and Malaysian populations, vitamin D status among individuals with common medical conditions, and current recommendations to achieve vitamin D sufficiency through sun exposure, food intake and supplementation. Recommendations were based on the findings of the literature reviews, recent European guidance on vitamin D supplementation, the 2018 road map for action on vitamin D in low- and middle-income countries, and research recommendations proposed by the Malaysian Ministry of Health in 2017. Results: Recommendations on assessment of vitamin D in the adult Malaysian population include using serum or plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration as a biomarker, widespread participation by Malaysian laboratories in the Vitamin D Standardization Program, adoption of the US Endocrine Society definitions of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, and development of a comprehensive nationwide vitamin D status study. Specific high-risk groups are identified for vitamin D assessment and recommendations relating to loading doses and ongoing management are also made. Conclusion: This Position Paper provides individual clinicians and national stakeholder organisations with clear recommendations to achieve vitamin D sufficiency in the adult population of Malaysia. Purpose: Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP) are common symptoms in pregnancy. Although no definitive treatment option for NVP, pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) supplementation has been used widely. The present study aims to systematically evaluate the current evidence regarding pyridoxine for the treatment of NVP. Methods: Data were obtained using a stepwise search process using keywords in the following online medical databases; PubMed®, Web of Science®, and Scopus® for studies published before 1st May 2021. Studies reporting intervention with pyridoxine supplementation alone and/or with other active substances were included. A meta-analysis was performed on the PUQE score and Rhode's score for nausea and vomiting. Findings: Initial database searching indicated 548 potentially eligible articles, of which 18 studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were selected. Eight studies showed beneficial effects with pyridoxine alone as the supplementation, while six others found that the supplementation of pyridoxine in combination with another active substance had favourable effects. Supplementation of pyridoxine alone as well as combined treatment of pyridoxine with an active ingredient as the intervention significantly improved the symptoms of nausea according to Rhode's score [0.78 [95% CI: 0.26, 1.31; p = 0.003; I2 = 57%, p = 0.10)] and PUQE score [0.75 (95% CI: 0.28, 1.22; p = 0.002; I2 = 0%, p = 0.51)], respectively. Using gene co-expression networks to understand dynamic characterizations in lactating animals becomes a common method. However, there are rarely reporters focusing on milk traits in Bactrian camel by high-throughput sequencing. We used RNA-seq to generate the camel transcriptome from the blood of 16 lactating Alxa Bactrian camel in different feeding groups. In total, we obtained 1185 milk-related genes correlated with milk yield, milk protein, milk fat, and milk lactose across the WGCNA analysis. Moreover, 364 milk-related genes were differentially expressed between supplementation and grazing feeding groups. The differential expression–camel milk-related genes CMRGs (DE-CMRGs) in supplement direct an intensive gene co-expression network to improve milk performance in lactating camels. This study provides a non-invasive method to identify the camel milk-related genes in camel blood for four primary milk traits and valuable theoretical basis and research ideas for the study of the milk performance regulation mechanism of camelid animals. There has been recent advocacy for food fortification with zinc in India. However, there are three important conditions that should be established before fortifying food with any micronutrient, which requires that there should be i) Established high prevalence of biochemical or sub-clinical deficiency (≥20%), ii) Low dietary intakes that increase the risk of deficiency, and iii) Evidence of efficacy of supplementation from clinical trials. For zinc, all three conditions are not satisfied. The prevalence of low serum zinc concentrations in Indian children is well below 20% (∼6%), signifying that zinc deficiency is not a public health problem. There is no risk of dietary zinc inadequacy in Indian populations where intake has been measured. Finally, there is no robust evidence that zinc-fortified foods improve functional outcomes, even if the serum zinc concentration is increased. Aim: The aim of this study was to verify the influence of caffeine (CAF) on time to exhaustion in a maximal incremental exercise test and cardiac autonomic indexes recovery in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Methods: In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled and crossover experimental design, eleven patients diagnosed with COPD performed an incremental test after ingesting CAF (5 mg kg−1) or placebo (PLA) (cellulose). CAF or PLA was administered 60 min before the test. Peripheral oxygen saturation was analyzed throughout the tests. Heart rate recovery (HRR) and variability (HRV) were analyzed after exhaustion in both tests. Additionally, six patients completed a spirometry after ingesting a capsule of caffeine. Results: The time to exhaustion in the incremental test with CAF (355.8 ± 171.1 s) was 2.1% longer than in the PLA test (348.5 ± 209.1 s), but there was no statistical difference (p = 0.70). Similarly, no statistical differences were observed in HRR and HRV between PLA and CAF (p > 0.05 for all analyses). The peripheral oxygen saturation values were lower at exhaustion but without a statistical difference (CAF = 92.3 ± 4.4% vs. PLA = 91.5 ± 2.7%; p > 0.05). After spirometry, the effect of CAF on FEV1 (Before CAF = 1.43 ± 0.75 L vs. After CAF = 1.47 ± 0.70 L; p = 0.17) was not demonstrated. Conclusion: Caffeine does not change incremental test performance and autonomic recovery response in patients with COPD. Purpose: To determine serum fatty acids of lacto-ovo vegetarian (LOV), vegan (VEG) and omnivorous (OMN) adults, and to analyse the effects of consuming a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplement of vegetable origin on fatty acid profile. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design was conducted in healthy adults. Volunteers (n = 116) were randomly assigned to a DHA-supplement (dose 250 mg/day), made from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp., or a placebo during 5-week periods separated by a 5-week washout interim period. Compliance and dietary intake were estimated and serum fatty acids were determined by gas chromatography. Results were analysed by mixed linear models. Results: Percentage of linoleic acid (C18:2n6) in serum was the highest among the fatty acids in the three diet groups, followed by oleic (C18:1n9) and palmitic (C16:0) acids. Linoleic (C18:2n6) and alpha-linolenic (C18:3n3) acids were higher in VEG compared to OMN (p < 0.001), while in LOV, their levels were intermediate between the other groups. Women presented higher DHA (C22:6n3) than men (p < 0.001). The DHA-supplement increased serum DHA compared to placebo in the three diet groups (p < 0.001), and a higher increase was observed in VEG followed by LOV (p < 0.001). The ratio serum n-6/n-3 improved by the supplementation but remained higher in LOV and VEG than in OMN. In contrast, the DHA-supplement decreased docosapentaenoic (C22:5n3) and docosatetraenoic (C22:4n6) acids in all diet groups (p < 0.001) and increased the eicosapentaenoic to alpha-linolenic fatty acids ratio (p = 0.016). Conclusion: The DHA-supplement at dose of 250 mg/day was effective in increasing serum DHA either in omnivorous, lacto-ovo vegetarian and vegan adults. Background: Supply of choline is not guaranteed in current preterm infant nutrition. Choline serves in parenchyma formation by membrane phosphatidylcholine (PC), plasma transport of poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) via PC, and methylation processes via betaine. PUFA-PC concentrations are high in brain, liver and lung, and deficiency may result in developmental disorders. We compared different deuterated (D9-) choline components for kinetics of D9-choline, D9-betaine and D9-PC. Methods: Prospective study (1/2021–12/2021) in 32 enterally fed preterm infants (28 0/7–32 0/7 weeks gestation). Patients were randomized to receive enterally a single dose of 2.7 mg/kg D9-choline-equivalent as D9-choline chloride, D9-phosphoryl-choline, D9-glycerophosphorylcholine (D9-GPC) or D9-1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-PC(D9-POPC), followed by blood sampling at 1 + 24 h or 12 + 60 h after administration. Plasma concentrations were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. Results are expressed as median (25th/75th percentile). Results: At 1 h, plasma D9-choline was 1.8 (0.9/2.2) µmol/L, 1.3 (0.9/1.5) µmol/L and 1.2 (0.7/1.4) µmol/L for D9-choline chloride, D9-GPC and D9-phosphoryl-choline, respectively. D9-POPC did not result in plasma D9-choline. Plasma D9-betaine was maximal at 12 h, with lowest concentrations after D9-POPC. Maximum plasma D9-PC values at 12 h were the highest after D9-POPC (14.4 (9.1/18.9) µmol/L), compared to the other components (D9-choline chloride: 8.1 [5.6/9.9] µmol/L; D9-GPC: 8.4 (6.2/10.3) µmol/L; D9-phosphoryl-choline: 9.8 (8.6/14.5) µmol/L). Predominance of D9-PC comprising linoleic, rather than oleic acid, indicated fatty-acyl remodeling of administered D9-POPC prior to systemic delivery. Conclusion: D9-Choline chloride, D9-GPC and D9-phosphoryl-choline equally increased plasma D9-choline and D9-betaine. D9-POPC shifted metabolism from D9-betaine to D9-PC. Combined supplementation of GPC and (PO) PC may be best suited to optimize choline supply in preterm infants. The bioconversion of jackfruit seed into a valuable product like Single-Cell Protein (SCP) was carried out using Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS), five filamentous fungi such as Penicillium expansum, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Rhizopus microsporus, and Candida intermedia by submerged fermentation. Data obtained from the study showed that supplementation of jackfruit seed extracts with inorganic nitrogen sources and glucose as a carbon source enhanced fungal biomass and SCP production. Among the various fungal strains, A. niger gave the highest biomass and protein yield of 4.01 ± 0.07 g/l and 1.82 ± 0.03 g/l, respectively, on the 9th day of fermentation followed by P. expansum (3.65 ± 0.04 g/l and 1.68 ± 0.03 g/l, respectively). C. intermedia growth was not recorded in all the experimental media. The present study revealed that fungal biomass has shown low crude fat, crude fiber, and total genomic DNA content ranged from 1.10 ± 0.20 to 4.95 ± 0.40%. A. niger and P. expansum were the most efficient in the conversion of sugar (55.83 ± 0.3% and 54.71 ± 0.4%, respectively) to yield biomass in sugar supplementation media. Lead (Pb) is a widespread environmental toxicant and its toxicity causes huge health impacts. The present study was conducted to examine the protective role of zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca) supplements against bio-absorption of Pb in blood and organs including the liver and kidney. Hence, Sprague Dawley rats were divided in to five groups. G1 served as negative control and was provided with standard diet, G2 as positive control receiving standard diet + PbAc (20 mg/kg BW), G3 was provided with standard diet + PbAc (20 mg/kg BW) + ZnSO4 (20 mg/kg BW), G4 with standard diet + PbAc (20 mg/kg BW) + CaCO3 (7.5 g/kg BW) whereas G5 was fed on standard diet + PbAc (20 mg/kg BW) + ZnSO4 (20 mg/kg BW) + CaCO3 (7.5 g/kg BW). The salts were provided as solution, dissolved in 0.5 mL distilled water via orogastric tube. After 35 days, the overnight fasted rats were decapitated, and blood and organs were collected for analysis of levels of metals and liver and kidney function tests. The results depicted significant decrease in Pb concentration in blood and organs while increase in Zn and Ca absorption was observed as a result of Zn and Ca supplementation with Zn being better than Ca alone, specially however, combined effect of these supplements was more profound in improving liver and kidney stress biomarkers and maintained the normal architecture of renal and hepatic parenchyma. We investigated whether 5 mg.kg−1 of caffeine enhanced performance in multiple 4 km cycling time trials (TT4km) conducted within the same day and across different days.After selection of eligible cyclists and familiarization with the TT4km, thirteen well-trained cyclists participated in a balanced placebo-controlled designed with two caffeine sessions (CAF-1 and CAF-2) and a placebo session. In each session, cyclists performed a baseline TT4km before caffeine, and two supplemented TT4km (50 min and 80 min after supplementation). Relative and absolute reliability were obtained through intraclass coefficient correlation and standard error of the measurement (SEM), respectively. The cyclists’ performance responses to caffeine were classified as beneficial, unchanged, and adverse by calculating the change between caffeine and placebo relative to SEM.Caffeine enhanced performance in the first supplemented TT4km in CAF-1 and CAF-2 (0.5% and 1.8%, respectively), although only CAF-2 was significantly different from placebo (p < 0.001). Arginine:glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) catalyzes mainly two reactions that generate 1) L-homoarginine (hArg) from L-arginine and L-lysine (Kharg) and 2) guanidinoacetate (GAA) and L-ornithine from L-arginine and glycine (Kgaa). Previously, we found that pharmacological treatment of Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) patients with metformin or L-citrulline resulted in antidromic effects on serum hArg and GAA concentrations, seemingly acting as an inhibitor and effector of AGAT activity, respectively. Here, we used data of this study as a model to determine Kharg and Kgaa values by using the concentrations of the participating amino acids measured in serum samples of the BMD patients. Supplementation is an integral part of modern dairy-feeding practices which mainly emphasise on higher production. Different supplements have been utilized by the farmers according to the need and action of supplements. Tinospora cordifolia (TC) is one such herbal supplement which can be utilized to feed dairy animals either alone or in combination with other supplements. TC is a herb found in tropical countries and having number of medicinal properties. Beneficial health effects of TC include immunostimulation, protection against inflammation and bacterial action, hepatoprotection, antioxidant and antineoplastic effects. Available studies on TC supplementation in dairy animals have shown a positive effect on health, body parameters and production performance. Supplementing TC is economically feasible, and it can be adopted by farmers as it helps in improving their net income. However, more research is needed in the field of dairy animals to explore the full potential of this herb. This review is written with the objective of highlighting the possibilities of using TC in dairy animal rations and promoting research in the concerned field to fill the gaps in knowledge. Allergic rhinitis is a common and chronic immunoglobulin E-mediated inflammation of nasal mucosa induced after allergen exposure. Allergic rhinitis is a global health problem that causes major illness and affects patient's social life, sleep, school and work performance. Various studies have implicated the association between low serum vitamin D levels and allergic diseases. Active form of Vitamin D3 has been shown to have immunoregulatory effect on both innate and adaptive immunity, which can significantly affect the outcome of allergic responses in allergic rhinitis. The study aims to evaluate effectiveness of Oral Vitamin D3 supplementation as an adjunct to standard therapy, in the management of allergic rhinitis. The present study is a prospective study in which 80 subjects were recruited and were randomly divided into two groups. The study group received oral vitamin D3 (60,000 IU) along with intranasal steroid spray while control group received only intranasal steroid spray for 4 weeks. The response in both the groups was compared by evaluating total nasal symptom score (TNSS). Subjects of allergic rhinitis showed deficiency in vitamin D indicated by mean serum vitamin D levels of 15 ± 2.42 ng/ml in the study group and 14.72 ± 2.64 ng/ml in the control group. The pre treatment mean TNSS score was 10.45 ± 3.1 in the study group and 11.43 ± 2.35 in the control group. The post treatment mean TNSS score was 2.1 ± 0.21 in the study group and 3.85 ± 0.76 in the control group. A significant reduction in symptoms score was observed after 4 weeks of oral vitamin D3 supplementation. The difference between two groups was found to be statistically significant (p value < 0.05). Asthma is characterized by reversible airway obstruction, increased bronchial hyper-responsiveness and chronic inflammation, as well as higher levels of oxidative stress mainly due to decreased antioxidant defenses. Our primary aim was to investigate the correlation of serum selenium (Se) levels with the severity of asthma across gender, age, family history, and prevalence from childhood. Selenium levels in blood samples in 103 asthmatic patients and 103 healthy individuals were evaluated. The obtained data indicated that the mean serum Se levels in asthma patients were found to be twofold lower as compared to the controls (p < 0.001). However, there were no significant differences in the asthmatic patients when gender and age were considered. Patients characterized by family history of asthma and inhaler usage had 8% and 7% lower serum Se concentrations, although the difference was only border significant (p = 0.05). Multiple regression analysis demonstrated a significant inverse association of inhaler usage (β = − 0.226; p < 0.001) with serum Se levels even after adjustment for asthma severity (β = − 0.644; p < 0.001). While this report clearly necessitates a more detailed study, it is plausible that Se deficiency leads to impaired immune response, and therefore, Se supplementation might modulate oxidative stress in the lung and could potentially alleviate asthma pathophysiology. This study aims to see how supplementing broiler chickens with Ficus exasperata leaf powder (FELP) and vitamin C affects carcass characteristics, brain and meat oxidative enzymes and cholesterol levels in tropical conditions. Three hundred thirty-six-day-old chicks (comprising of 168 Cobb 500 breed chicks and 168 Arbor Acre breed chicks) of broiler chicks weighing 37.40 ± 0.45 g were assigned to 8 experimental diets of 7 replicates (6 birds/replicate; 42 birds/treatment). Diets 1 and 2 were not supplemented, while diets 3 and 4 had vitamin C (200 mg/kg of basal diet) supplementation. Then, diets 5 and 6 received 1 g FELP/kg of basal diet supplementation each while diets 7 and 8 had 1 g FELP/kg of basal diet + 200 mg of vitamin C. The breed and FELP affected (P < 0.05) the dressing percentage. The relative weights of the gizzard and heart were affected (P < 0.05) by the vitamin c and FELP, while the lung weight was affected by vitamin C. The proventriculus was affected by the breed, FELP and vitamin c. The brain catalase and glutathione peroxidase increased with vitamin c and FELP supplementation while catalase and glutathione peroxidases were higher in CO. Vitamin c and FELP reduced the meat lipid oxidation but increased the glutathione peroxidase and catalase. Conclusively, dietary supplementation with 200 mg/kg of vitamin C and 1% FELP could increase the brain’s antioxidant capacity and improve the meat quality of broiler chickens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Lifelong daily multivitamin supplementation is highly recommended after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Based on previous research, a specialized multivitamin supplement (MVS) for SG patients was developed and optimized (WLS Optimum 1.0 and 2.0). This study presents its mid-term effectives and compares micronutrient status of SG patients using this specialized MVS to users of standard MVS (sMVS) and non-users of multivitamin supplementation during the first three years post-surgery. Materials and Methods: Of the 226 participants that were included at baseline, yearly follow-up blood tests were completed by 193 participants (85%) at 12 months, 176 participants (78%) at 24 months, and 140 participants (62%) at 36 months of follow-up. At each time point, participants were divided into four groups: (1) Optimum 1.0, (2) Optimum 2.0, (3) sMVS, and (4) non-users. Serum concentrations (linear mixed-effects models) and the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies (chi-square tests) during follow-up were compared between the groups. Results: Users of specialized MVS (Optimum 1.0 and 2.0) had higher serum concentrations of hemoglobin, folic acid, and vitamin D compared to sMVS users and non-users during follow-up. Serum concentrations of vitamin B12 and (corrected) calcium were also higher in specialized MVS users than in non-users. Overall, fewer deficiencies for folic acid and vitamin D were observed in the Optimum groups. Conclusion: Although the perfect multivitamin supplement for all SG patients does not exist, WLS Optimum was more effective in sustaining normal serum concentrations than standard, over-the-counter supplementation. Background: The study examined the effects of dietary supplementation of Syzygium aromaticum leaf meal (SLM) on the haematology, serum biochemistry and antioxidative status of laying hens. Results: A total of 150 20-week-old Isa brown birds were randomly assigned to three experimental diets: Diet 1/control (no supplementation), Diet 2 (0.25% SLM) and Diet 3 (0.50% SLM). Each experimental diet was further divided into five (5) replicates and comprised 10 birds per replicate, that is, 50 birds per experimental diet. The birds were fed with layers mash for 32 weeks of the feeding trial. Blood samples collected in the 32nd week were subjected to haematological and serum biochemical analyses. The dietary supplementation of 0.25% and 0.50% SLM did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect the haematological parameters observed in the layer birds which indicated that SLM did not render the birds anaemic nor compromise their immunity. Likewise, the result of the serum protein (total protein, albumin, globulin and albumin: globulin), serum enzymes (alanine and aspartate aminotransferases) and serum metabolites (creatinine, uric acid and glucose) were not affected (P > 0.05) by the dietary treatment except for the concentration of serum catalase and glutathione peroxidase which was statistically higher (P < 0.05) in layers fed with diets supplemented with SLM compared to the control group, while the serum superoxide dismutase concentration of laying hens was not significantly influenced (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The supplementation of SLM at 0.25% and 0.50% in layers diet can be referred to as a safe additive as the blood indices of birds were not adversely affected. Previous studies evaluating the role of magnesium supplementation as a preventative strategy for preeclampsia showed inconsistent results. We performed a meta-analysis or randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the influence of oral magnesium supplementation on the incidence of preeclampsia in pregnant women. Relevant studies were obtained by search of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane's Library databases. A random effects model was used to pool the results. Influences of study characteristics of the outcome were evaluated by predefined subgroup analyses. Seven RCTs with 2653 pregnant women were included. Pooled results showed that oral magnesium supplementation during pregnancy significantly reduced the risk of preeclampsia (risk ratio [RR]: 0.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.59 to 0.98, P = 0.04) with no significant heterogeneity (P for Cochrane's Q test = 0.42, I2 = 1%). The result was not significant for the outcome of severe preeclampsia (RR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.18 to 1.69, P = 0.29; I2 = 0%), although only two studies were available. Subgroup analysis showed that oral magnesium supplementation did not significantly reduce the risk of preeclampsia in normal pregnant women (RR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.67 to 1.25, P = 0.57), but the preventative effect was significant in studies with normal and high-risk pregnant women (RR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.35 to 0.83, P = 0.005; P for subgroup difference = 0.04).
