The magnetic field of the Sun is generated by internal dynamo process with a cyclic period of 11 years or a 22 year magnetic cycle. The signatures of the Sun's magnetic cycle are observed in the different layers of its atmosphere and in its internal layers. In this review, we use the same diagnostics to understand the magnetic cycles of other stars with the same internal structure as the Sun. We review what is currently known about mapping the surface magnetic fields, chromospheric and coronal indicators, cycles in photometry and asteroseismology. Magnetic fields play a fundamental role for interior and atmospheric properties of M dwarfs and greatly influence terrestrial planets orbiting in the habitable zones of these low-mass stars. Determination of the strength and topology of magnetic fields, both on stellar surfaces and throughout the extended stellar magnetospheres, is a key ingredient for advancing stellar and planetary science. Here, modern methods of magnetic field measurements applied to M-dwarf stars are reviewed, with an emphasis on direct diagnostics based on interpretation of the Zeeman effect signatures in high-resolution intensity and polarisation spectra. Results of the mean field strength measurements derived from Zeeman broadening analyses as well as information on the global magnetic geometries inferred by applying tomographic mapping methods to spectropolarimetric observations are summarised and critically evaluated. The emerging understanding of the complex, multi-scale nature of M-dwarf magnetic fields is discussed in the context of theoretical models of hydromagnetic dynamos and stellar interior structure altered by magnetic fields. The magnetic and thermal evolution of neutron stars is a very complex process with many non-linear interactions. For a decent understanding of neutron star physics, these evolutions cannot be considered isolated. A brief overview is presented, which describes the main magneto-thermal interactions that determine the fate of both isolated neutron stars and accreting ones. Special attention is devoted to the interplay of thermal and magnetic evolution at the polar cap of radio pulsars. There, a strong meridional temperature gradient is maintained over the lifetime of radio pulsars. It may be strong enough to drive thermoelectric magnetic field creation which perpetuate a toroidal magnetic field around the polar cap rim. Such a local field component may amplify and curve the poloidal surface field at the cap, forming a strong and small scale magnetic field as required for the radio emission of pulsars. We present the multicolor BV RI photometry and BTA/SCORPIO spectroscopy for the red nova V4332 Sgr, performed in 2005-2012. We have analyzed the behavior of the nova remnant, considering our observations along with all the published observations and archival photographic photometry. The atomic and molecular emission spectra show an exponential weakening. Since 2003, the line fluxes have on the average decreased 30-fold. The continuum of the M-type giant in the spectrum has weakened abruptly between 2006 and 2008, twice in the red and by 4 times in the blue range. The variations in the spectral energy distribution of the stellar continuum after the outburst correspond to a decrease in the surface temperature of the M-type giant by 1000 K. The presence of a faint star of about 20 is possible. The star can be either a member of the system or a field star. It is found that the phenomenon of the red nova in this system is not related with the M-type star. The progenitor of the explosion could be a blue straggler, which has disappeared from the spectral energy distribution after the explosion of 1994. It is most likely that this object was a contact binary system. To explain the 'cold explosion' of V4332 Sgr, we have accepted the hypothesis of merging components of a contact binary star in a hierarchical triple or multiple system. There are evidences of dynamical destruction of the outburst remnant and accretion of its matter to the M-type giant. The cause of the red nova phenomenon is thought to be a sudden explosive energy release in the center of a star having a massive envelope, and a subsequent expansion of the envelope in the conditions close to adiabatic. As a result of the explosion, thermal energy reaches the surface of the envelope a year or a few years after the outburst, whereas the envelope already has a large surface area. The cause of the explosion in the center of the star can be both a merger event of the nuclei of two stars in the contact system with a formed common massive envelope and instability in the core of a single massive star. The lifetime of solar-like stars, the envelope structure of more massive stars, and stellar acoustic frequencies largely depend on the radiative properties of the stellar plasma. Up to now, these complex quantities have been estimated only theoretically. The development of the powerful tools of helio- and astero- seismology has made it possible to gain insights on the interiors of stars. Consequently, increased emphasis is now placed on knowledge of the monochromatic opacity coefficients. Here we review how these radiative properties play a role, and where they are most important. We then concentrate specifically on the envelopes of β Cephei variable stars. We discuss the dispersion of eight different theoretical estimates of the monochromatic opacity spectrum and the challenges we need to face to check these calculations experimentally. Issues concerning the structure and evolution of core collapse progenitor stars, and stellar evolution in general, are discussed with an emphasis on interior evolution. We discuss some recent results that address quantifying the uncertainties inherent in modern stellar evolution calculations, and we describe a research effort aimed at investigating the transport and mixing processes associated with stellar turbulence, which is arguably the greatest source of uncertainty in supernova progenitor structure, besides mass loss, at the time of core collapse. We highlight the important role played by precision observations of stellar parameters in constraining theoretical models, as well as the physical insight that can be garnered from three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation. We present new ultraviolet spectra of the hottest known, peculiar white dwarf H1504+65, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. H1504+65 is the hottest known white dwarf ( T=200 000 K) and has an atmosphere mainly composed by carbon and oxygen, augmented with high amounts of neon and magnesium. This object is unique and the origin of its surface chemistry is completely unclear. We probably see the naked core of either a C-O white dwarf or even a O-Ne-Mg white dwarf. In the latter case, this would be the first proof that such white dwarfs can be the outcome of single-star evolution. White dwarf stars are the final evolutionary stage of the vast majority of stars, including our Sun. Since the coolest white dwarfs are very old objects, the present population of white dwarfs contains a wealth of information on the evolution of stars from birth to death, and on the star formation rate throughout the history of our Galaxy. Thus, the study of white dwarfs has potential applications in different fields of astrophysics. In particular, white dwarfs can be used as independent reliable cosmic clocks, and can also provide valuable information about the fundamental parameters of a wide variety of stellar populations, such as our Galaxy and open and globular clusters. In addition, the high densities and temperatures characterizing white dwarfs allow these stars to be used as cosmic laboratories for studying physical processes under extreme conditions that cannot be achieved in terrestrial laboratories. Last but not least, since many white dwarf stars undergo pulsational instabilities, the study of their properties constitutes a powerful tool for applications beyond stellar astrophysics. In particular, white dwarfs can be used to constrain fundamental properties of elementary particles such as axions and neutrinos and to study problems related to the variation of fundamental constants. These potential applications of white dwarfs have led to renewed interest in the calculation of very detailed evolutionary and pulsational models for these stars. In this work, we review the essentials of the physics of white dwarf stars. We enumerate the reasons that make these stars excellent chronometers, and we describe why white dwarfs provide tools for a wide variety of applications. Special emphasis is placed on the physical processes that lead to the formation of white dwarfs as well as on the different energy sources and processes responsible for chemical abundance changes that occur along their evolution. Moreover, in the course of their lives, white dwarfs cross different pulsational instability strips. The existence of these instability strips provides astronomers with a unique opportunity to peer into their internal structure that would otherwise remain hidden from observers. We will show that this allows one to measure stellar masses with unprecedented precision and to infer their envelope thicknesses, to probe the core chemical stratification, and to detect rotation rates and magnetic fields. The hot pulsating sdB star PG 1605+072 exhibits uncommon spectroscopic and pulsation properties, and is one of the biggest challenge in the field of sdB star modeling. Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain its unusually rich pulsation spectrum. The first is the natural explanation of a fast-rotating pulsator, which lifts the (2 l+1)-fold degeneracy of the frequency components. Another approach, where PG 1605+072 can be seen as a slow rotator, considers that the numerous low amplitude frequency components are second- and third-order harmonics and nonlinear combinations of the highest amplitude frequencies. We investigated the two hypotheses in the light of asteroseismology, using our latest tools-including pulsation codes that incorporate star rotation and new generation complete sdB models. The results of both approaches are presented, showing interesting results and raising new questions for our understanding of this mysterious sdB star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Roche-lobe overflow and common envelope evolution are very important in binary evolution, which is believed to be the main evolutionary channel to hot subdwarf stars. The details of these processes are difficult to model, but adiabatic expansion provides an excellent approximation to the structure of a donor star undergoing dynamical time scale mass transfer. We can use this model to study the responses of stars of various masses and evolutionary stages as potential donor stars, with the urgent goal of obtaining more accurate stability criteria for dynamical mass transfer in binary population synthesis studies. As examples, we describe here several models with the initial masses equal to 1 M and 10 M, and identify potential limitations to the use of our results for giant-branch stars. We investigate simulated turbulent flow within thermally driven stellar convection zones. Different driving sources are studied, including cooling at the top of the convectively unstable region, as occurs in surface convection zones; and heating at the base by nuclear burning. The transport of enthalpy and kinetic energy, and the distribution of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation are studied. We emphasize the importance of global constraints on shaping the quasi-steady flow characteristics, and present an analysis of turbulent convection which is posed as a boundary value problem that can be easily incorporated into standard stellar evolution codes for deep, efficient convection. Direct comparison is made between the theoretical analysis and the simulated flow and very good agreement is found. Some common assumptions traditionally used to treat quasi-steady turbulent flow in stellar models are briefly discussed. The importance and proper treatment of convective boundaries are indicated. Mixing processes such as convection, overshooting and rotational mixing have long been known to affect the evolutionary properties of low-mass stars. While modeling a 1.2 M⊙ star, we encountered a semiconvective region outside the fully convective core, reminiscent of the well-known situation for massive stars. In this study we focus on low-mass stars presenting convective cores and, by applying different prescriptions for the determination of the convective boundaries and, using different mixing descriptions for the dynamical processes in the core, we look for the effects of semiconvective mixing in the interior structure of the stars and its observable quantities. With this purpose, we have constructed different sets of evolutionary models using a stellar evolution code (GARSTEC), and analyzed the models looking for imprints of these processes. Stellar evolutionary models are essential for the determination of stellar masses and ages. Several parameters can be used to characterize the structure of subgiant stars. Amongst others we can find: the helium and metal abundances, mixing length and core overshooting. In many cases, these parameters are scaled taking into account the solar values. Yet, the universality of such scalings has been put to question. As shown here, by allowing some freedom to these parameters we end up with a degeneracy of model solutions. This puts serious limitations on the determination of mass and age. Asteroseismology may provide a valuable help to break such a degeneracy. HR 7349 is a bright [ V=5.8] red giant observed by CoRoT in the seismofield of the first long run. The outstanding CoRoT light curve allowed the detection of several solar-like oscillation modes (both radial and non-radial). On top of these seismic constraints, our observational knowledge on HR 7349 benefits as well from a precise parallax and detailed spectroscopic constraints. The Kepler mission will provide large separations for many stars. One of the tasks of Kepler Asteroseismic Consortium is to determine radii of the observed stars from the large separations and other catalogued “classical” data such as effective temperature, metallicities, brightness, distance etc. We present the results of a detailed analysis of errors in the radius estimates caused by errors in the input parameters. This article presents and discusses a critical compilation of accurate, fundamental determinations of stellar masses and radii. We have identified 95 detached binary systems containing 190 stars (94 eclipsing systems, and α Centauri) that satisfy our criterion that the mass and radius of both stars be known within errors of ±3% accuracy or better. All of them are non-interacting systems, and so the stars should have evolved as if they were single. This sample more than doubles that of the earlier similar review by Andersen (Astron Astrophys Rev 3:91–126, 1991), extends the mass range at both ends and, for the first time, includes an extragalactic binary. In every case, we have examined the original data and recomputed the stellar parameters with a consistent set of assumptions and physical constants. To these we add interstellar reddening, effective temperature, metal abundance, rotational velocity and apsidal motion determinations when available, and we compute a number of other physical parameters, notably luminosity and distance. These accurate physical parameters reveal the effects of stellar evolution with unprecedented clarity, and we discuss the use of the data in observational tests of stellar evolution models in some detail. Earlier findings of significant structural differences between moderately fast-rotating, mildly active stars and single stars, ascribed to the presence of strong magnetic and spot activity, are confirmed beyond doubt. We also show how the best data can be used to test prescriptions for the subtle interplay between convection, diffusion, and other non-classical effects in stellar models. The amount and quality of the data also allow us to analyse the tidal evolution of the systems in considerable depth, testing prescriptions of rotational synchronisation and orbital circularisation in greater detail than possible before. We show that the formulae for pseudo-synchronisation of stars in eccentric orbits predict the observed rotations quite well, except for very young and/or widely separated stars. Deviations do occur, however, especially for stars with convective envelopes. The superior data set finally demonstrates that apsidal motion rates as predicted from General Relativity plus tidal theory are in good agreement with the best observational data. No reliable binary data exist, which challenge General Relativity to any significant extent. The new data also enable us to derive empirical calibrations of M and R for single (post-) main-sequence stars above $${0.6\,M_{\odot}}$$. Simple, polynomial functions of Teff, log g and [Fe/H] yield M and R within errors of 6 and 3%, respectively. Excellent agreement is found with independent determinations for host stars of transiting extrasolar planets, and good agreement with determinations of M and R from stellar models as constrained by trigonometric parallaxes and spectroscopic values of Teff and [Fe/H]. Finally, we list a set of 23 interferometric binaries with masses known to be better than 3%, but without fundamental radius determinations (except α Aur). The Stellar Imager (SI) is a space-based, UV/Optical Interferometer (UVOI) designed to enable 0.1 milli-arcsecond (mas) spectral imaging of stellar surfaces and of the Universe in general. It will also probe via asteroseismology flows and structures in stellar interiors. SI’s science focuses on the role of magnetism in the Universe and will revolutionize our understanding of the formation of planetary systems, of the habitability and climatology of distant planets, and of many magneto-hydrodynamically controlled processes, such as accretion, in the Universe. The ultra-sharp images of SI will revolutionize our view of many dynamic astrophysical processes by transforming point sources into extended sources, and snapshots into evolving views. SI is a “Flagship and Landmark Discovery Mission” in the 2005 Heliophysics Roadmap and a potential implementation of the UVOI in the 2006 Science Program for NASA’s Astronomy and Physics Division. We present here the science goals of the SI Mission, a mission architecture that could meet those goals, and the technology development needed to enable this mission. The hydrogen-deficiency in extremely hot post-AGB stars of spectral class PG1159 is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse that consumes the hydrogen envelope, exposing the usually-hidden intershell region. Thus, the photospheric element abundances of these stars allow us to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We compare predicted element abundances to those determined by quantitative spectral analyses performed with advanced non-LTE model atmospheres. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found for many species (He, C, N, O, Ne, F, Si, Ar) but discrepancies for others (P, S, Fe) point at shortcomings in stellar evolution models for AGB stars. Almost all of the chemical trace elements in these hot stars can only be identified in the UV spectral range. Internal gravity waves constitute an efficient process for angular momentum transport over large distances. They are now seen as an important ingredient in understanding the evolution of stellar rotation and can explain the Sun’s quasi-flat internal-rotation profile. Because the Sun’s rotation frequency is of the same order as that of the waves, it is now necessary to refine our description of wave propagation and to take into account the action of the Coriolis acceleration in a coherent way. To achieve this goal, we adopt the traditional approximation, which can be applied to stellar radiation zones under conditions that are given. We present the modified transport equations and their numerical evaluation in a parameter range that is significant for the Sun. The present paper provides a description of the oscillation code filou, its main features, type of applications it can be used for, and some representative solutions. The code is actively involved in CoRoT/ESTA exercises (this volume) for the preparation for the proper interpretation of space data from the CoRoT mission. Although CoRoT/ESTA exercises have been limited to the oscillations computations for non-rotating models, the main characteristic of filou is, however, the computation of radial and non-radial oscillation frequencies in presence of rotation. In particular, filou calculates (in a perturbative approach) adiabatic oscillation frequencies corrected for the effects of rotation (up to the second order in the rotation rate) including near degeneracy effects. Furthermore, filou works with either a uniform rotation or a radial differential rotation profile (shellular rotation), feature which makes the code singular in the field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present a grid of stellar evolution models, computed with an up-to-date physical description of the internal structure, using the Code d’Évolution Stellaire Adaptatif et Modulaire ( cesam). The evolutionary sequences span from the pre-main sequence to the beginning of the Red Giant Branch and cover an interval of mass typical for low and intermediate mass stars. The chemical composition (both helium and metal abundance) is the solar one. The frequencies of oscillation, computed for specific stellar models of the grid using the Porto Oscillations Code ( posc), are also provided. This work was accomplished in order to support the preparation of the CoRoT mission within the Evolution and Seismic Tools Activity (CoRoT/ESTA). On the other hand, the grid can also be used, more generally, to interpret the observational properties of either individual stars or stellar populations. We compare stellar models produced by different stellar evolution codes for the CoRoT/ESTA project, comparing their global quantities, their physical structure, and their oscillation properties. We discuss the differences between models and identify the underlying reasons for these differences. The stellar models are representative of potential CoRoT targets. Overall we find very good agreement between the five different codes, but with some significant deviations. We find noticeable discrepancies (though still at the per cent level) that result from the handling of the equation of state, of the opacities and of the convective boundaries. We compare the predictions of the FRANEC and CESAM stellar evolutionary codes for selected physical quantities used as input parameters in current asteroseismological calculations. We present grids of stellar models and their associated oscillation frequencies that have been used by the CoRoT Seismology Working Group during the scientific preparation of the CoRoT mission. The stellar models have been calculated with the CESAM stellar internal structure and evolution code while the oscillation frequencies have been obtained from the CESAM models by means of the ADIPLS adiabatic oscillation programme. The grids cover a range of masses, chemical compositions and evolutionary stages corresponding to those of the CoRoT primary targets. The Porto Oscillation Code ( posc) has been developed in 1995 and improved over the years, with the main goal of calculating linear adiabatic oscillations for models of solar-type stars. It has also been used to estimate the frequencies and eigenfunctions of stars from the pre-main sequence up to the sub-giant phase, having a mass between 0.8 and 4 solar masses. The code solves the linearised perturbation equations of adiabatic pulsations for an equilibrium model using a second order numerical integration method. The possibility of using Richardson extrapolation is implemented. Several options for the surface boundary condition can be used. The forthcoming data expected from space missions such as CoRoT require the capacity of the available tools to provide accurate models whose numerical precision is well above the expected observational errors. In order to secure that these tools meet the specifications, a team has been established to test and, when necessary, to improve the codes available in the community. The CoRoT Evolution and Seismic Tool Activity (ESTA) has been set up with this mission. Several groups have been involved. The present paper describes the motivation and the organisation of this activity, providing the context and the basis for the presentation of the results that have been achieved so far. A first part gives a summary of the main conclusions stemmed from the different comparisons reported in this book. One main conclusion is: with some care in the computations, one is able to obtain frequency differences between different computations which are smaller than required by Corot challenges. This is true for high frequency modes. Small frequency differences are much less easily obtained for low frequencies around the fundamental radial mode frequency. Care here means: having the same physics, same constants of physics, same input stellar parameters, computing models and oscillations with enough self numerical consistent accuracy. The ESTA group has built reference grids of models and associated oscillation frequencies and made them available to the community. In a second part of the present paper, a study case is considered in order to show the need and the use of such reference grids. Asteroseismology provides us with a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of stellar structure and evolution. Recent developments, including the first systematic studies of solar-like pulsators, have boosted the impact of this field of research within astrophysics and have led to a significant increase in the size of the research community. In the present paper we start by reviewing the basic observational and theoretical properties of classical and solar-like pulsators and present results from some of the most recent and outstanding studies of these stars. We centre our review on those classes of pulsators for which interferometric studies are expected to provide a significant input. We discuss current limitations to asteroseismic studies, including difficulties in mode identification and in the accurate determination of global parameters of pulsating stars, and, after a brief review of those aspects of interferometry that are most relevant in this context, anticipate how interferometric observations may contribute to overcome these limitations. Moreover, we present results of recent pilot studies of pulsating stars involving both asteroseismic and interferometric constraints and look into the future, summarizing ongoing efforts concerning the development of future instruments and satellite missions which are expected to have an impact in this field of research. A search program for pulsating sdBs was conducted with the Nordic Optical Telescope in the years 1999–2001. Possible candidates were selected from the HS, HE and PG surveys. The article is focused on the transport of angular momentum in the depths of the accreting component of a binary system. Angular momentum occurs along with accreted matter. In response to accretion, the rate of meridional circulation increases throughout the entirety of the radiative envelope of a mass gainer star. Meridional circulation velocity in the depths of a star gaining mass is more than two orders of magnitude greater than during the quiet evolution of a single star along the main sequence. Meridional circulation is the main mechanism of momentum transport from the outer layers of a mass gainer to the inner layers.
