The article proposes a methodological approach to quantifying direct economic damage from unfavorable and hazardous natural processes and phenomena for railways—an element of the critical infrastructure of the Russian Federation. The methodology is based on a normative approach to assessing the replacement cost of railway lines, which varies depending on the cost of construction in the orographic and climatic conditions of a particular region. The results are presented in the context of municipalities, which makes it possible to better take into account intraregional differences and facilitates their comparison with parameters characterizing natural hazards (floods, hazardous slope-related and geocryological processes, etc.). The calculations showed that the maximum cost of replacing railway lines in the event of natural threats for the country as a whole is about RUB 11 trln in 2021 prices, or approximately 8.4% of Russia's GDP for this year. The first ten regions in terms of the maximum amount of probable damage—Irkutsk, Amur, and Sverdlovsk oblasts; Khabarovsk, Zabaykalsky, Krasnoyarsk, Altai, Krasnodar, and Primorsky krais; and the Republic of Buryatia—account for over 40% of the total replacement cost. It is in these regions that measures to protect the fixed assets of railway transport are particularly important. The obtained data can be used in studies of natural and man-made risk: by comparing them with parameters characterizing the impact of hazardous natural processes and phenomena, it is possible to predict the risk and probable damage to railway infrastructure facilities in certain territories. This paper provides an overview of the applications of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in the railway maintenance industry. Our research covers specifically the subdomain of railway track maintenance. In this study, we have analyzed the state-of-the-art of CNNs applied to railway track maintenance by conducting an extensive literature review, summarizing different tasks and problems related to the topic and presenting solutions based on CNNs with a special emphasis on the data used to create these models. The results of our research show different applications of CNNs within the scope, including the detection of defects in the surface of railway rails and railway track components, such as fasteners, joints, sleepers, switches and crossings, as well as the recognition of track components, and the continuous monitoring of railway tracks. The architecture of CNNs is fitting to learning spatial hierarchies of features directly from the input data, making them of great use for Computer Vision and other applications related to the topic at hand. The implementation of IoT devices and smart sensors aid the collection of real-time data which can be used to feed powerful CNN models to recognize patterns and identify complex events related to the maintenance of railway tracks. In this study, the effects of noise and vibrations caused by railways on the lives of residents around the railways in districts 17 and 18 of Tehran, the capital of Iran which amounts to about 700,000 people, are investigated. In the first stage the actual level of noise was measured at various points which showed above standard levels. Afterward, the authors developed a questionnaire and the survey was conducted from 376 residents. The findings of this study show that the most important factor for the residents adjacent to the railway line is the need for action by the country's railway authorities to reduce and control the adverse effects of noise and vibration. Also, the analysis of inferential statistics performed by chi-square test shows that the variables of gender and proximity of residence or workplace or both to the railway do not affect any of the railway noise or vibration dissatisfaction. The age variable also has no effect on noise dissatisfaction but does impact on vibration. Finally, distance from the railway affects both disaffection from noise and vibration. An approach to constructing digital twins is presented to assess the load-capacity resource of the electrical infrastructure of railways on heavy-haul traffic routes. Within the framework of the approach, it is proposed to select the components of the digital-twin model among the indicators of the transportation process and farms providing the transportation process using the correlation and cluster-analysis methods. It has been determined that the load-capacity resource of the electrical infrastructure of railways will be provided under the conditions under which the forecast volumes of electricity consumption, determined through indicators of the traction power-supply system load capacity, will be at a level not less than the maximum values of electricity-consumption forecast volumes. This paper estimates a measure of coal price for all NUTS3 Italian provinces between 1861 and 1911. Italy was a latecomer country and its late industrialization was characterized by the absence of coal in a time when the steam engine powered factory work. The new variable accounts for the main input factor of manufacturing production during that period in which the Italian economy registered a long-term growth of GDP and an increase in its industrial activity. On the China–Europe route, the sea used to dominate entirely continental transports, but in the last decade the railways started to gain some ground. However, it took number of years that railway volumes grew as significant, and finally coronavirus era (2020–2021) promoted much higher usage. This was the case not only on the main route Poland–China, but also on the more northern and lower-volume routes, such as Finland–China. This research uses regression analysis of the latter route to reveal factors that have an effect on rail container volumes. It is shown that Baltic Dry Index (BDI) and coronavirus related variables have influenced most container volumes on the Finland–China route. Oil price development has also played some sort of role. Interestingly, sea port handling of Finland does not play any significance in the model, nor does foreign trade between countries. The Indian Railways is India's biggest employer and undeniably influences the country's transportation network, economy, and social and cultural systems. The network is split into zones for operational reasons. It is vital to evaluate these railway networks to identify their strengths and shortcomings and to improve their performance. Past works often use Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate railway services. Our contribution lies in the inclusion of several aspects not previously considered, such as (i) both tangible and intangible criteria, (ii) the hierarchical nature of the problem, and (iii) additional useful criteria and data to analyze the performance of the zones, including physical assets, operating ratio, accidents, comfort, travel experience, flexibility, transparency, etc. We use the novel Hierarchical Fuzzy Axiomatic Design method to evaluate the performance of sixteen zones in the Indian Railways since it suits our problem well. We find that the Southern Railway zone performs best, while the Northeast Frontier zone is ranked last. We also identify the strengths and weaknesses of all railway zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many communication and signaling systems still rely on cables routed trackside and are thus exposed to induction. The evaluation of induced voltage as touch voltage and as coupled interference is particularly relevant for safety assessment, in terms of electrical and functional safety, and in general for system availability. Induction may be estimated by simplified and conservative closed-form expressions or with more complex simulation models; available models are in general developed for frequency domain. The proposed method provides accurate induced voltage waveform with moderate complexity, as caused by AC traction supply major transients for both 1 × 25 (no autotransformer) and 2 × 25 (with autotransformer) configurations. The method can use simulated or measured frequency responses followed by fitting of a polynomial transfer function H(s) with good approximation (about 3–6%) over an extended frequency interval (up to 1000 Hz). Input to H(s) are the transient waveforms, namely for short circuit and inrush phenomena. For short circuit the proposed calculation method is that of an equivalent circuit including all relevant elements, confronted to standardized method of EN 60909-0 for what regards peak and steady state value and time constant. The H(s) output is the transient induced voltage waveform: comparing the intensity for 1 × 25 and 2 × 25 cases achieves a first validation by comparing to reduction factors documented in the literature. Greenhouse gas emissions, acidification, and the dispersion of particles are negative side effects of railways that have received notable attention in Europe but are seldom considered in performance evaluations. The objective of this work was to assess the efficiency of European railways involved in the commitment signed by the international railway association (UIC) and The community of European railway and infrastructure companies (CER), considering the action of 14 rail companies to reduce negative externalities. Data envelopment analysis was applied under the framework of a slacks-based measure and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution to account for undesirable outputs and ensure unique rankings. Three different measures were considered: two ordinary energy efficiency models, with and without environmental restrictions, which are input–output ratios, and the eco-efficiency, which is an economic performance-to-environmental impacts ratio. The first two models were found to be similar to each other but different to the eco-efficiency, as a high ordinary efficiency ranking generally is not equivalent to high eco-efficiency. The results indicate that the average performance of the firms is low, but with a considerable temporal growth which is driven by environmental factors. Several policy-making implications are addressed to assist railway efficiency improvements and avoid anomalies in environmental performance evaluations. Railway systems form an important means of transport across the world. However, congestions or disruptions may significantly decrease these systems' efficiencies, making predicting and understanding the resulting train delays a priority for railway organisations. Delays are studied in a wide variety of models, which usually simulate trains as discrete agents carrying delays. In contrast, in this paper, we define a novel model for studying delays, where they spread across the railway network via a diffusion-like process. This type of modelling has various advantages such as quick computation and ease of applying various statistical tools like spectral methods, but it also comes with limitations related to the directional and discrete nature of delays and the trains carrying them. We apply the model to the Belgian railways and study its performance in simulating the delay propagation in severely disrupted railway situations. In particular, we discuss the role of spatial aggregation by proposing to cluster the Belgian railway system into sets of stations and adapt the model accordingly. We find that such aggregation significantly increases the model's performance. For some particular situations, non-trivial optimal levels of spatial resolution are found on which the model performs best. Shift2Rail is a joint undertaking funded by the EU via its Horizon 2020 program and by main railway stakeholders. Several Shift2Rail projects aim to investigate the application of formal methods to new ERTMS/ETCS railway signalling systems that promise to move European railway forward by guaranteeing high capacity, low cost and improved reliability. We explore the ERTMS/ETCS level 3 full moving block specifications stemming from different Shift2Rail projects using Uppaal and statistical model checking. The results range from novel rigorously formalised requirements to an operational model formally verified against scenarios with multiple trains on a single railway line. From the gained experience, we have distilled future research goals to improve the formal specification and verification of real-time systems, and we discuss some barriers concerning a possible uptake of formal methods and tools in the railway industry. Reliability engineering of railway infrastructure aims to understand failure processes and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of investments and maintenance planning such that a high quality of service is achieved. While formal methods are widely used to verify the design specifications of safety-critical components in train control, quantitative methods to analyze the service reliability associated with specific system designs are only starting to emerge. In this paper, we strive to advance the use of formal fault-tree modeling for providing a quantitative assessment of the railway infrastructure's service reliability in the design phase. While, individually, most subsystems required for route-setting and train control are well understood, the system's reliability to globally provide its designated service capacity is less studied. To this end, we present a framework based on dynamic fault trees that allows to analyze train routability based on train paths projected in the interlocking system. We particularly focus on the dependency of train paths on track-based assets such as switches and crossings, which are particularly prone to failures due to their being subject to weather and heavy wear. By using probabilistic model checking to analyze and verify the reliability of feasible route sets for scheduled train lines, performance metrics for reliability analysis of the system as a whole as well as criticality analysis of individual (sub-)components become available. The approach, which has been previously discussed in our paper at FMICS 2019, is further refined, and additional algorithmic approaches, analysis settings and application scenarios in infrastructure and maintenance planning are discussed. This article presents the results of field study near a Northern Railway embankment (Hanovey station) in a field work area of the Geocryology Department (Moscow State University), where we performed cone penetration tests, measured the thickness of the active layer and soil temperatures, monitored settlement of the embankment, and performed laboratory tests. A mathematical model was compiled in the Qfrost program based on these data taking the unevenness of the snow cover in the study area into account. Calculations of the temperature regime of the embankment until 2050 taking climate change into account (according to the RCP 4.5 scenario), showed that the thickness of the talik at the embankment will increase by 40% in 30 years and without taking this factor into account, by 17%. This article also discusses the features of the position and structure of the embankment, as well as the composition and properties of frozen soils, which significantly affect the stability of the embankment. The research questions were to: (1) identify whether significant microbial colonisation was present within the air handling system of trains and causing the odours; to (2) identify other potential sources and; (3) remedial options for addressing the issue.A mixed-methods, action research design was used adopted. Sections of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems from odour-affected trains were swabbed for bacteria and fungi and examined for evidence of wear, fatigue and damage on-site and off-site. Insulation foam material extracted from the walls of affected trains was also subjected to a chemical assessment following exposure to varying humidity and temperature conditions in a climate simulator. This was accompanied by a qualitative sensory characterisation.Upon exposure to a variety of simulated temperature and humidity combinations to recreate the odour, volatile chemical compounds released from the insulation foam by water were identified as its likely cause. In addition, a range of potentially serious pathogenic and odour-causing microbes were cultured from the HVAC systems, although it is considered unlikely that bacterial colonies were the odour source.The research has implications for the sanitising and maintenance policies for HVAC systems on public transport, especially when operating in humid environments. Context: Cities are heterogeneous landscapes, composed of different urban uses with diverse histories. A thorough description of these urban landscapes is required to understand ecological patterns, particularly concerning high-stakes species such as invasive alien plants (IAP) which are abundant in cities. Objectives: We assessed the effects of urban uses and linear structural elements on the distributions of seven IAP in a medium-sized French city (Blois). We examined how the relative contributions of these variables vary between three spatial scales of analysis (100 m, 200 m and 400 m) and three urban classifications. Methods: We characterized the use and age of urban neighborhoods through three classifications with different levels of details and described road and rail networks of Blois. We analyzed their effects on the distribution of seven invasive plants recorded throughout the whole city using GLM models. Results: Urban use was the most significant variable in explaining IAP distribution. This variable was especially important at the finest spatial scale which allowed a detailed urban classification. Individual residential neighborhoods of different ages explained the distribution of Buddleja davidii, Berberis aquifolium and Acer negundo, whereas industrial areas explained Ailanthus altissima distribution. The effects of linear structural elements were lower and differed between species. Conclusions: We show that combining fine-scale spatial analyses with detailed characterization of urban use diversity is critical to understanding ecological patterns at the city scale. Investigating planting choices and dispersal process of IAP could complete our results. With the last Holocaust survivors quietly passing away, one might also expect to see accountability debates slowing to a trickle. Surprisingly, however, recent years show an upswing in corporate World War II-related atonement debates. Interest in corporate participation in mass atrocity has expanded worldwide; yet what constitutes ethical corporate behavior during and after war remains understudied. This article considers these questions through a study of the French National Railways' (SNCF) roles during the German occupation and its more recent struggle to make amends. This study demonstrates that ethical business leadership requires taking responsibility for past as well as current decisions. Most executives grappling with complex corporate histories work in isolation, in part because the scholarship on business ethics fails to provide guidance. Without such guidance, corporations often respond to accusations about their pasts with carefully crafted statements and legal strategies rather than deep expressions of moral leadership. To assist in remedying this tendency, this paper simultaneously encourages companies to engage in deeper reflection on corporate history, while urging scholars to help guide corporations through critical ethical conversations. An algorithm for controlling the flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over the railway in the automatic mode without the participation of the operator and the use of satellite navigation systems is proposed. The algorithm is based on a computer analysis of the video image from the UAV camera, highlighting the rails, determining their direction relative to the UAV movement and controlling the flight characteristics (pitch, yaw, and roll) so that the flight is carried out above the railway at a given height. A feature of the algorithm is its simplicity, which does not require significant computing resources. The implementation of the algorithm does not affect the weight and size parameters and power consumption of the UAV and does not affect the range and duration of its flight. Assuring an uninterrupted high Quality of Service (QoS) of railway communications between on-board terminals and base stations creates challenges for the provider. This is partly explained by the inherent mobility and the high penetration loss of carriages. Deploying mobile relays in public transportation is possible with a 100%-compatible LTE/EPC architecture. This effectively ensures that the electromagnetic insulation is kept to a minimum as QoS on board can be dramatically affected and worsened within the railway vehicles. Yet all users' traffic congregates via the radio backhaul link and needs to take into consideration the extra packet-overhead and signaling messages that as a general rule get transmitted via the fixed links. The paper's aim is to analyze the performance of mobile relays in loaded conditions comparing this to the standard direct mode. We propose an analytical model to compute the signaling rate. We parametrize it with experiments done on a testbed with real radio transmissions and show that signaling has no major impact on performance. We then evaluate the QoS experienced by passengers by means of simulations for two representative services: Web browsing and voice communications. The packet loss ratio for voice communications is reduced at the expense of a slight end-to-end latency increase thanks to mobile relays. This paper presents a methodology for estimating rockfall threats in carbonate rock cuts along railways in Croatia. The assessment is based on the Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS). In general, the RHRS versions developed for Tennessee and Colorado are combined and modified to comply with Croatian carbonate rock mass properties, specific geological environments and values measured in the investigation area. The modifications are related to the classification parameters and corresponding adjustments of their classes. The exponential scoring of parameter classes is retained, but the calculation of final rockfall threat classes is modified. The proposed methodology is developed and applied to 366 cut segments along railways with a total length of 74.888 km. All rock cuts are located in the Dinaric karst area of Croatia, where carbonate rocks are locally susceptible to rockfalls, which mostly include sliding, toppling and ravelling. Rockfall threat is calculated for each cut segment with 15 different scoring models. The optimal scoring model is chosen according to the verification results. The verification is based on three different verification parameters: preliminary rockfall threat assessment, rockfall scars and cut stability, which are defined by the Regional Maintenance Administration of Croatian Railways. An ordinal logistic regression is performed to determine the threshold values for each rockfall threat class. The established methodology is used to detect the most vulnerable railway sections, which are selected for detailed inspection and reclamation. The research also enables a proactive approach of rockfall management along linear infrastructure in Croatia but also worldwide in similar geological environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The inaccuracy of traffic forecasts has long stood as a central research theme in the field of infrastructure and transportation studies. The literature presents several motives for this phenomenon, ranging from a political bias, insufficient technical preparation, changing urban patterns, and economic dynamics. Uncertainty due to the inaccuracy of forecasts can have a profound impact on the infrastructure development process, right through from the preliminary studies up until the operation and re-negotiation of contracts (in cases when projects are developed using a concessions model). This paper provides an extensive systematic review of forecast inaccuracy in roads and railways projects (analyzing trends, causes, and results). The research found that: (1) forecasts in rail projects are generally more optimistic than in road projects; (2) over the last couple of decades the accuracy of forecasts has not improved significantly, and; (3) there has been a generalized ramp-up effect in forecasts. Space weather is a phenomenon in which radioactivity and atomic particles is caused by emission from the Sun and stars. It is one of the extreme climate events that could potentially has short-term and long-term impacts on infrastructure. The effects of this phenomenon are a multi-fold process that include electronic system, equipment and component failures, short-term and long-term hazards and consequences to astronauts and aircraft crews, electrostatic charge variation of satellites, disruptions in telecommunications systems, navigational systems, power transmission failures and disturbances to the rail traffic and power grids. The critical infrastructures are becoming interdependent to each other and these infrastructures are vulnerable if one of them is affected due to space weather. Railway infrastructure could be affected by the extreme space weather events and long-term evolution due to direct and indirect effects on system components, such as track circuits, electronic components in-built in signalling systems or indirectly via interdependencies on power, communications, etc. While several space weather-related studies focus on power grids, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and aviation sectors, a little attention has focused towards probability of railway infrastructure disruptions. Nevertheless, disruptions due to space weather on signalling and train control systems has documented but other systems that railway infrastructure dependent upon are not very well studied. Due to the advancements in digitalization, cloud storage, Internet of Things (IoT), etc., that are embedded with electronic equipment are also possible to prone to these effects and it is even become more susceptible to the extreme space weather events. This paper gives a review of space weather effects on railways and other transportation systems and provide some of the mitigation measures to the infrastructure and societal point of view. Passengers traveling by train may need to change trains on their route. If the focal train of a passenger is late, the passenger might miss his connection and has to decide how to continue his trip. Delay management addresses the question whether the connecting train should wait (or not) for the delayed passengers. If the connecting train waits, delays would get transferred through the network. In literature, several works consider delays and their impact on railways and how to reschedule disturbed plans. We focus on works, aiming to minimize passenger inconvenience as it is done in delay management. In the last two decades, dozens of works considering the delay management problem have emerged, tackling the problem in different ways. In this paper, an overview on the existing literature is given, and a new classification is introduced. We provide a taxonomy scheme for railway problems at an operational level and show how the field of delay management fits to other parts of the planning process. Recently, due to the advancements in the Information and Communication Technology, there has been lot of emphasis on digitization of the existing and newly developed infrastructure. In transportation infrastructure, in general, 80% of the assets are already in place and there has been tremendous push to move to the digital era. For efficient and effective design, construction, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure, due to this digitization, there is increasing research trend in data-driven decision-making algorithms that are proved to be effective because of several advantages. Since railway is the backbone of the society, the data-driven approaches will ensure the continuous operation, efficient maintenance, planning and potential future investments. The breach and leak of this potential data to the wrong hands might result in havoc, risk, trust, hazards and serious consequences. Hence, the main purpose of this paper is to stress the potential challenges, consequences, threats, vulnerabilities and risk management of data security in the railway infrastructure in context of eMaintenance. Tanks are technologies used to store water for irrigation in south India since ancient times. Scholars have been divided over the reasons for the decline of tanks. In the late eighteenth century, when the British colonial government took control of large parts of south India, tanks were in a decrepit state and unusable. Over two hundred years of colonial rule resulted in tanks diminishing in importance to agriculture, and many were replaced by canals and well irrigation. While some scholars have blamed 'modern' colonial policies of profit for the decline of tank systems, others have argued that tanks were neither managed perfectly nor egalitarian institutions during precolonial times. This article furthers this analysis and examines policies of tank maintenance in the specific context of an expanding nineteenth-century colonial economy, focused on producing 'value' and eliminating 'waste'. The article shows how the colonial state, in the wake of a famine, undertook renewed efforts at maintaining tanks in the late nineteenth-century. However, tank maintenance intersected with expanding railways and large scale deforestation, which were cornerstones of the productive colonial economy. The article shows how tanks occupied an uncertain space within the 'waste' and 'value' dialectic, unsure of how maintenance policies and ecological changes produced them within these underlying conditions of the colonial economy. This article presents an analysis of the relationship between historical memory and the emergence and reproduction of a specific model of unionism. I argue that in order to understand the militant particularism of the Spanish engine drivers, we need to look at the historical representations that it is embedded in. Recourse to a generational framework makes possible the sustained presentation of the union as a case of successful workers’ organizing, in spite of evidence to the contrary. The historical ethnographic analysis of SEMAF, the Spanish engine drivers’ union, contributes to the analysis of historical memory within the contemporary anthropology of class. The article contributes to theoretical debates in the anthropology of class by reclaiming Michel Trouillot’s conceptualization of the historical process. Two aspects of Trouillot’s work are singled out: his dynamic understanding of the process of historical production and the corollary formulation of the overlapping capacities in which people participate in it (as agents, actors, and subjects) and his emphasis on the importance of expanding scholarly views of the field of historical production. Alien plants, although usually rare in mountain habitats, can significantly impact native species diversity. The aim of this study was to analyse patterns of alien plant distribution in the Tatra Mts (Slovakia), focusing primarily on comparison of various transportation routes as a conduit for the spread of alien plants. We collected data on transects along: (i) railways, (ii) paved roads with unlimited access, (iii) tourist routes in mountain valleys (paved and unpaved roads, footpaths) with limited access and (iv) plots in areas surrounding mountain chalets. The majority of alien plants were found in locations at lower elevations and with intensive human activity. Patterns of distribution along the main corridors in the Tatras reflect the intensity and manner of use of each transportation route. Paved roads with unlimited access and railways are used most frequently and host the greatest number of alien species. Our observations show that the mode of access of these routes is more important than the road surface. Roads with limited vehicular access, be it unpaved and paved, are very similar in their alien species richness, while paved roads with limited and unlimited access significantly differ. Footpaths that cannot be accessed by vehicles are almost free of alien plants, even though they are found in the widest elevation range and often parallel to roads in the same valley. Other factors significantly negatively affiliated with alien species richness were elevation, cover of the tree and moss layer and moisture, and positively affiliated with the amount of nutrients. Sorting humps are the main technical means providing the breaking- and making-up of freight trains. Automation of sorting process by implementing microprocessor control systems is the main direction of increasing hump yard capacity, enhancement of safety in trains breaking-up, improvement of working conditions on hump yards. However, for wider introduction of such systems at the humps, it is necessary to reduce their cost. One of the main tasks of hump control systems is the determination of the optimal cars exit speeds from the retarders. Its solution is significantly complicated because of the uncertainty of cars rolling resistance coefficient, wind velocity and direction, retarder control errors. The paper is aimed at solving the problem of searching for such cars exit speeds from the retarders that provide the longest time intervals between them at the switches. Implementation of this method will make it possible to improve the quality of sorting process as a whole by improving the software of microprocessor control systems for automatic humping, rather than by increasing their technical facilities, which as a result will reduce the cost of their construction and operation. The research results, when solving the problem of searching for cars exit speeds from the retarders, allow us to move from searching for the maximum of a nonlinear non-smooth function of two variables to solution of an equation with one variable, which significantly accelerates and simplifies the solution to the problem. In the ever expanding universe of formal methods, several tools exist that can be exploited to validate early system designs, and that are applicable to problems of the railway domain. In this paper, we present an experience report in formal modelling and verification using seven different formal environments, namely UMC, Promela/SPIN, NuSMV, mCRL2, CPN Tools, FDR4 and CADP. In particular, we model and verify an algorithm that addresses a typical railway problem, namely deadlock avoidance in train scheduling. The algorithm is designed according to a prototypical architecture, the so-called blackboard pattern, in which a set of global data are atomically updated by a set of concurrent guarded agents. Our experience, limited to the specific problem, shows that the design of the algorithm can be translated into the different formalisms with acceptable effort, while deep proficiency with the tools is required to optimise the performance. The current paper establishes the preliminary foundations for the concept of formal methods diversity in the development of railway systems. The concept is based on the idea that if different non-certified formal environments are used to verify the same design, this increases the confidence on the verification results. Furthermore, by checking that the number of states generated during the verification process is the same for each framework, the designer can have an initial indication of the equivalence of the diverse models. The industrial application of this promising concept requires further research, and appropriate guidelines shall be established to identify the proper formal environments to use for a specific railway problem, and to define an industrial process in which formal methods diversity can be exploited at its full benefits. Faculty of Engineering at Shoubra has been funded to start a project for manufacturing railway sleepers from plastic wastes and iron slag to replace imported wooden sleepers. In this paper, performance of wooden sleepers in tracks of Egyptian Railways, including high cost and material defects as well as reasons to find out a new sleeper will be presented. Previous studies for using composite materials in manufacturing railway sleepers are illustrated. Mechanical testing has been carried out to determine the important properties of the new mixture; hence results are compared with the minimum requirements of the international railway standards. Linear analysis has been conducted using 3D-SAP2000 software to simulate the actual performance of the proposed sleeper. It is found that the testing results are larger than the required values. Thus; it is concluded that the tested material is effective and adequate to be used in manufacture of railway sleepers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on the assessment of the vibration behaviour of granular sub-ballast materials mixed with rubber particles from scrap tyres. The main objective is to evaluate whether these mixes attenuate vibrations caused by passing trains, and if so, to what extent. Several laboratory and field tests were carried out to monitor the response of such materials to various excitation sources. The results show that under controlled laboratory conditions, the addition of rubber (up to 5 % by weight) greatly increases the damping ratio and reduces vibration. Field tests also show that higher percentages of rubber yield a significant alleviation of vibration caused by repetitive and harmonic loads that are similar to those produced by passing trains. An addition of 5 % by weight yields a reduction of 50 % in the mean acceleration peak at 1 m from the excitation source. The anisotropy of the mix is another key factor when evaluating the vibration behaviour of these mixes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper is motivated by a concern that the 'drift' metaphor may trigger stereotyped responses to accidents such as recurring requirements for better change management. The paper explores the idea that mechanisms of drift may be system-dependent by providing a qualitative analysis of the role of infrastructure in accidents and incidents in the Norwegian railway sector. An analysis of five public investigation reports on railway accidents and incidents led to the identification of four mechanisms by which infrastructure may be involved in systemic safety drift. (1) Different infrastructure generations live side by side, leading to operational complexity and less than optimal combinations of technology. (2) Operational complexity, loss of technical barriers, and increased dependence on human performance occurs when railways revert to more basic operating modes due to infrastructure breakdown or modification or maintenance work. (3) Development of infrastructure can lag behind capacity demands, causing human adaptations with implications for safety. (4) The high cost of infrastructure investments and slow funding can cause a lag in resolving safety issues and weaken the motivation for raising concerns or reporting safety incidents. A comparison between main line operations and shunting operations showed that there is considerable variety in the preconditions for drift within the railway sector. It is concluded that attention to the diversity of drift may be a starting point for tailoring safety management strategies and preventive measures to the specific challenges and opportunities of a particular sociotechnical system. Rapid transit systems timetables are commonly designed to accommodate passenger demand in sections with the highest passenger load. However, disruptions frequently arise due to an increase in the demand, infrastructure incidences or as a consequence of fleet size reductions. All these circumstances give rise to unsupplied demand at certain stations, which generates passenger overloads in the available vehicles. The design of strategies that guarantee reasonable user waiting time with small increases of operation costs is now an important research topic. This paper proposes a tactical approach to determine optimal policies for dealing with such situations. Concretely, a short-turning strategy is analysed, where some vehicles perform short cycles in order to increase the frequency among certain stations of the lines and to equilibrate the train occupancy level. Turn-back points should be located and service offset should be determined with the objective of diminishing the passenger waiting time while preserving certain level of quality of service. This paper presents a scalable prototype surveillance/alarm system for public transportation safety applications over railway environments with emphasis given in the wireless vehicular communication inside a tunnel after an emergency event. An heterogeneous hybrid vehicular wireless network consisted of IEEE 802.11b/g/e and IEEE 802.16e is being deployed inside a tunnel environment for surveillance reasons. We provide a highly modular architecture system design covering a wide range of applications both in terms of monitored spaces (metro stations, trains, buses and other public transport) and in terms of threats to public safety (security incidents, accidental events, natural hazards) based on autonomous, smart monitoring devices that capture data only upon the occurrence of an incident, potentially dangerous for the passengers (like an explosion blast or the triggering of the fire detector). Moreover, we evaluate the experimental performance of the proposed vehicular hybrid WiMAX/WLAN wireless network after an emergency situation, for this reason we emulate the train coaches movement with vehicles inside a tunnel field. This paper describes a tool for extracting formal safety conditions from interlocking tables for railway interlocking systems. The tool has been applied to generate safety conditions for the interlocking system at Stenstrup station in Denmark, and the SAL model checker tool has been used to check that these conditions were satisfied by a model of the relay circuits implementing the interlocking system at Stenstrup station. Nowadays, frequent maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment whose goal is to deter the suspension time of railway infrastructures are proven to be ineffectual. It also results in loss of reliability as well as consuming unnecessary means and costs, since at least half of the precautionary maintenance activities are considered redundant. Despite this spending, operators are struggling to adequately maintain their assets—resulting in unacceptably frequent delays and cancellations and low levels of satisfaction among rail users. Thanks to the increasing availability and sophistication of advanced analytics, operators have a significant opportunity to create solutions to long-standing maintenance challenges. The role of predictive maintenance and especially that of Design-Out Maintenance constitute the necessary procedure that can predict in time any hardware failures, while reducing the damage or wearing down of the overall operational equipment. This can increase the effectiveness of the railways, while significantly reducing the overall expenditure needed for the repair and maintenance of the industry’s infrastructure. This paper proposes a predictive railways maintenance strategy based on deep learning techniques. Specifically, and in order to achieve the exact remaining useful life of the railway equipment, a hybrid neural architecture of long short-term memory autoencoder network is used. The purpose of this suggested architecture is the automatic feature extraction of dynamic time series and their utilization on a prediction model, which can predict with high accuracy the remaining useful life of the railway’s mechanical equipment. This paper presents a game-theoretic model of a liberalized railway market, in which train operation and ownership of infrastructure are vertically separated. We analyze how the regulatory agency will optimally set the charges that operators have to pay to the infrastructure manager for access to the tracks and how these charges change with increased competition in the railway market. Our analysis shows that an increased number of competitors in the freight and/or passenger segment reduces prices per kilometer and increases total output in train kilometers. The regulatory agency reacts to more competition with a reduction in access charges in the corresponding segment. Consumers benefit through lower prices, while individual profits of each operator decrease through a higher number of competitors. We further show that the welfare effect of increased competition in the freight and/or passenger segment is ambiguous and depends on the level of competition. Finally, social welfare is higher under two-part tariffs than under one-part tariffs if raising public funds is costly to society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are many issues surrounding the performance of critical assets on high-speed ballasted railway lines. At assets like switch & crossings and bridge transitions high track forces can be produced resulting in higher ballast settlements and hence track misalignments. The latter result in higher track forces and hence more settlement, leading to the need for increased track maintenance to ensure comfort and safety. Current technologies for solving issues like ballast movement under high-speed loading regimes are limited. However, a technique that has been well used across the UK and now increasingly overseas to stabilise and reinforce ballasted railway tracks is the application of in-situ polyurethane polymers, termed XiTRACK. This paper discusses how this technique can be used to solve these types of long-standing issues and presents actual polymer application profiles at two typical critical sites, namely a junction and a transition onto concrete slab-track. Due to the significant costs and time consumed for track visual inspections, most railway industries rely only on geometry data obtained from automated inspections for the assessments of railway track quality conditions. This is the main limitation of the current practices, which may lead to inappropriate determinations of maintenance and repair schedules. This research attempts to rectify this deficiency by developing a methodology for the establishment of correlations between the track structural conditions and the data obtained from automated inspections. The aim is to provide the possibility of having a rational understanding of the structural defects of track (the causes of track irregularities) without conducting visual inspections. Neural network technique is implemented for this purpose. A vast amount of field data obtained from comprehensive visual and automated inspections of different railways are utilized to develop the neural network models. The results obtained in this research reveals that the neural network technique has a very good capability in establishing correlations between track geometrical defects and track structural problems. The application of the developed models in a number of railway tracks indicates that the proposed methodology is an effective approach in the prediction of track structural defects. The paper deals with the timetabling problem of a single-track railway line. To solve the timetabling problem, we propose a three-stage approach combining several optimization criteria. Initially and mainly, the maximum relative travel time (ratio of travel time to minimum possible travel time) is minimized subject to a set of constraints, including departure time, train speed, minimum and maximum dwell time, and headway at track segments and stations. Since this problem has many solutions, the process is repeated for other trains, keeping the relative travel times of the critical train fixed, until all trains have been assigned their optimal relative travel times. In the second stage, the prompt allocation of trains is a secondary objective, and finally, in the third stage, the one minimizing the sum of the station dwell times of all trains, keeping the relative travel times constant, is selected to reduce fuel consumption, as a tertiary objective. To consider the user preferences in the optimization problems, the user preference departure time is used instead of the actual planned departure times. In order to guarantee that the exact or a very good approximate global optimum is attained, an algorithm based on the bisection rule is used. This method allows the computation time to be reduced in at least one order of magnitude for 42 trains. The problem of sensitivity analysis is also discussed, and closed form formulas for the sensitivities in terms of the dual variables are given. Several examples of applications are presented to illustrate the goodness of the proposed method. The results show that an adequate selection of intermediate stations and of the departure times are crucial in the good performance of the line and that inadequate spacings between consecutive trains can block the line. In addition, it is shown that, in order to improve performance, regional trains must be scheduled just ahead of or following the long distance trains, rather than having independent schedules. The sensitivities are shown to be very useful in identifying critical trains, segments, stations, departure times, and headways and in suggesting line infrastructure changes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to European Directives, it would be necessary to develop freight interoperability, defined as crossing borders from one country to another without changing either locomotive or driving crew. This project is a challenge for the railway companies that control infrastructures and traffic. The interoperability implementation implies changes in work techniques, regulation and organisation, that may affect the reliability of the systems involved, giving rise to risky situations in terms of production, regularity and safety. The purpose of this paper is to describe a proactive ergonomic approach used for the integration of human factors and safety at the early stages of design for future interoperable situations. Ergonomic analysis has been oriented within a socio-technical frame where a workstation is viewed in its technical and organisational dimensions. Three methods have been used: observations in marshalling yards and driving cabin in other countries, staff interviews and analyses of incidents and hazards. Results formed the basis for developing “a methodological guide for integrating human factors”. There is a growing consensus among economists that the most procompetitive strategy for restructuring public utility enterprises includes complete vertical separation of the network or grid portion of a sector from other parts of the sector where competition is to be created. Although exceptions to this rule are readily granted, it is generally considered that any alternative strategy may pay a high cost in terms of discriminatory access to the grid by non-integrated entrants into the new competitive sector. This consensus is somewhat surprising in light of the simultaneous growth of transactions cost economics, with its emphasis on the benefits of close vertical relationships—including vertical integration—in the face of complexity, unforeseeable contingencies, and problems with contract law enforcement. The main purpose of this paper is to implement a system capable of detecting faults in railway point mechanisms. This is achieved by developing an algorithm that takes advantage of three empirical criteria simultaneously capable of detecting faults from records of measurements of force against time. The system is dynamic in several respects: the base reference data is computed using all the curves free from faults as they are encountered in the experimental data; the algorithm that uses the three criteria simultaneously may be applied in on-line situations as each new data point becomes available; and recursive algorithms are applied to filter noise from the raw data in an automatic way. This article identifies the patterns of integration and autonomy in organizational governance in two government-owned railways in Hong Kong in relation to relevant external and internal actors from the government, market and civil society. The Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation, a government department turned into a statutory corporation, and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited, a statutory corporation turned into a listed company, are both profitable enterprises. They have been subjected to similar macro-governance influences (mainly political and policy changes), but their patterns of integration and autonomy with relevant actors in organizational governance are not the same. The historical variations in the integration-autonomy patterns, notably an increased tendency for government intervention, as well as major differences between the two railways in their relationships with market and civil society actors, can often be explained by three interrelated factors, namely, political conditions, community expectations and performance. Public procurement by competitive tendering is an important part of European policies to encourage competition in network industries previously dominated by public companies. In recent years, the appearance of very low bids has become an issue in several countries. We discuss predatory bidding from a theoretical, practical and legislative point of view. A case of tendering for train services in Sweden is used to illustrate the possibilities to detect an abnormally low bid. An analysis of projected costs and revenues is complemented with a method using historical data on previous tenders. One conclusion is that there is scope for reform in national competition policies in European Union member states concerning multinational enterprises participating in local tenders. One of the critical infrastructure components in most economies across the world is the rail network. In different nations rail is responsible for ensuring that there is not complete gridlock on the roads in commuter hours, and for moving both people and freight for long distances in an as efficient manner as possible. This critical role, a number of high profile accidents and proposals for new network control philosophies and systems have led to a great upsurge in human factors rail research and applications in the past few years. This paper provides a retrospective on rail human factors research covering driving, signalling and control, maintenance, incident reporting systems, passengers and the public, planning and technical systems change. This research foundation, and also current major rail human factors programmes, are placed in the context of technology, investment, competition, cultural and safety requirements and constraints. The paper concludes with an examination of where rail human factors should and will be going into the future. Rail human factors research has grown rapidly in both quantity and quality of output over the past few years. There was an early base of work at a few institutions carried out over the 1960 s and 1970 s, followed by a lull in the 1980 s and early 1990 s. The continual influences of safety concerns, new technical system opportunities, reorganisation of the business, needs to increase effective, reliable and safe use of capacity, and increased society, media and government interest have now accelerated rail human factors research programmes in several countries. In this paper we review the literature on rail human factors research, covering driving, signalling and control, maintenance, reporting systems, passenger interests, planning and technical systems change. Current major rail human factors programmes are summarised and future research needs proposed. One of the strengths of DEA in the measurement of technical efficiency is that it readily accommodates multiple-output multiple-input production technologies. In doing so, it assumes that each of the inputs is used jointly in the production of each output. In some applied studies, this can be undesirable. We propose a new disaggregated formulation that allows a specific output to be made independent of a specific input, while maintaining the joint production relationship for the other outputs and inputs. We demonstrate the approach by applying it to measure the technical efficiency of national rail systems in 20 countries between 1990 and 1998. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interest in Parkway stations emerged in the 1980s. These act as convenient out-of-town stations for inter-urban rail journeys. There were 13 so-called Parkway stations in Great Britain in 1999 and two have subsequently been opened. This paper reports the development and application of a new Parkway forecasting model which was conducted for the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), undertaken as part of an extensive update to the Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook, which recommends demand forecasting frameworks and associated parameters that are widely used in the railway industry in Great Britain. The objective was to develop a model that had more desirable properties and was more straightforward to apply than the previously recommended procedure. The focus is entirely upon inter-urban journeys of over 80 km. The model forecasts the demand for Parkway stations based solely on rail ticket sales data and its properties are illustrated with two case study applications. The nature of Parkway stations forces consideration of competition, and it is demonstrated that the inclusion of a station choice component leads to a somewhat improved explanatory power and a more plausible generalised cost elasticity. In addition to the methodological developments, the model has provided generally reasonable elasticities and forecasts and shown that Parkway users have different preferences to rail travellers in general. Rail access to airports is becoming increasingly important for both train operators and the airports themselves. This paper reports analysis of inter-urban rail demand to and from Manchester and Stansted Airports and the sensitivity of this market segment to growth in air traffic and the cost and service quality of rail services. The estimated demand parameters vary in an expected manner between outward and inward air travellers as well as between airport users and general rail travellers. These parameters can be entered into the demand forecasting framework widely used in the rail industry in Great Britain to provide an appropriate means of forecasting for this otherwise neglected market segment. The novel features of this research, at least in the British context, are that it provides the first detailed analysis of aggregate rail flows to and from airports, it has disaggregated the traditional generalised time measure of rail service quality in order to estimate separate elasticities to journey time, service headway and interchange, and it has successfully explored departures from the conventional constant elasticity position.
