Background: Collaborations are an essential element of scientific activity and particularly important in fields such as pediatric anesthesiology, where the evidence base in general is relatively limited. A recent scientometric analysis revealed a geographic diversification of publication activity in pediatric anesthesiology within the last two decades, accompanied by a surge in international collaborations. Objectives: Given the hypothesis of a similar growth in the activity and dynamics of publications in pediatric anesthesiology, the objective of this scientometric study was to analyze the publication activity and collaboration habits in research in pediatric anesthesiology from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH). Method: This secondary analysis identified all publications on pediatric anesthesiology with an affiliation from the D‑A-CH countries between 2001 and 2020 from PubMed and Web of Science. The query parameters included the timeframe 2001–2020, authors' affiliations tied to anesthesiology departments (using various forms of the term "anesthesia"), and the mention of pediatric interest in titles or abstracts. The data underwent standardization to account for linguistic variations. The publications were assigned to a state, city and institution based on the correspondence address, to a year based on the publication date and to a source based on the journal. The primary endpoint was publication activity and dynamics, represented by the number of publications and the respective growth rates (calculated as the linear regression slope). Secondary endpoints included the share of collaborations within and outside the D‑A-CH region (at the country and institutional level), the distribution of publication activity and the most prominent sources of publications. Results: Between 2001 and 2020 a total of 3406 publications on pediatric anesthesiology involving authors from the D‑A-CH countries were identified. Of these 2807 (82.4%) had a correspondence address in D‑A-CH. The average annual growth rate of publications with a correspondence address was + 2.9% for the D‑A-CH countries and + 7.7% for publications with collaborations. The number of publications in which an institution from D‑A-CH was named as a coauthor from a correspondence address outside D‑A-CH also increased by an average of 7.4% per year during the study period. The majority of collaborations occurred between institutions within the D‑A-CH region, although Swiss institutions exhibited a much higher proportion of collaborations outside the region. Of all publications with a correspondence address 90% originated from 46 cities. The most prominent source was Die Anästhesiologie for publications from Germany, and Pediatric Anesthesia for publications from Austria and Switzerland. Conclusion: The number of publications in pediatric anesthesiology from the D‑A-CH countries has increased over the past two decades, accompanied by a surge in collaborations. Classic works in the geography of research and innovation activity of the 1960s–1970s on clustering and diffusion of innovations in the 21st century have received new impetus for development with the approach of open innovation and growing importance of interregional network collaboration. Digitalization has provided access to new sources of big data on the movement of key elements of the knowledge economy, including publications—the formalized result of scientific activity. The aim of the article is to identify the center–periphery research ties of one of the largest macroregions of European Russia—the South. The problem was solved to assess the territorial patterns of the formation of interregional research networks with the identification of centers of gravity of various orders and ties between them at the local and national levels. The study was based on the spatial scientometrics method. Geocoded data on publications from the Scopus abstract and citation database were used. The hypotheses about the Moscow-centricity and Petersburg-centricity of the scientific space of the macroregion were verified. The influence of the factors of geographical proximity and diversity of interregional ties was assessed. The results of the analysis revealed significant cooperation in the research field between regions of the South (and the wider South) of the European part Russia. The hypothesis on the presence of several centers of attraction for scientific activity in the macroregion, including Rostov oblast, Krasnodar krai, and Volgograd oblast, has been confirmed. The hypothesis on the interdependence of the level of publication activity and branching of the research network was confirmed. The influence of the factor of territorial proximity in the formation of cooperative ties is low and is manifested mainly in southern Russian regions with relatively low indicators of scientific productivity (primarily in the national republics). Interregional scientific cooperation of advanced regions is not limited to immediate geographical proximity, it is determined by a combination of nonterritorial factors. The Moscow-centricity of regions of the macroregion is typical of most southern federal subjects and is especially pronounced in regions with low internal scientific potential, as well as in new regions that have undergone a period of transformation of scientific systems. A primary goal of state scientific and technological policy is to increase the share of publications by Russian authors in scientific journals indexed in international databases. However, statistical analysis has shown that an increase publication activity among Russian authors has occurred against the backdrop of stagnation in the country's scientific and technological potential. The article presents comparative data concerning the types of the same publications between two of the world's leading scientific information systems – Web of Science and Scopus – and publishers. This paper shows significant differences in the typification of documents in a sample of the 3843 most actively cited works with Russian authorship of various types for the period 2010–2020. It shows that the type of publication is not an obvious criterion: the same work can be assigned different types depending on the source of information. The revealed discrepancies of information from various sources give grounds for a certain skepticism regarding the correctness of the formulation of tasks in the analysis of publication activity concerning the accounting of publications of only certain types. The results of this study suggest that if it is necessary to take into account only certain types of publications, information on the types of documents should be verified with the original information from publishers. The publication activity of Russian scientists in various fields in chemistry is analyzed. Data on the indexing of articles of Russian Empire chemists in Chemisches Zentralblatt and Chemical Abstracts indicate active development of Russian science at the end of the 19th century and its rapid recovery and competitive ability after the First and Second World Wars. The collapse of the USSR dealt a severe blow to the scientific potential of the country, which was among the top five in all areas of chemical science before 1990. Currently, Russian scientists hold the strongest positions in the field of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. The number of publications of Russian scientists in foreign journals exceeds 50% of the total number of papers, and one third of the research is carried out with international cooperation. As has been noted on numerous occasions, between 2012 and 2021, the pace of publications by Russian researchers rapidly increased; however, this growth was uneven in both quantitative and qualitative terms. Moreover, some research organizations had zero or even negative publication activity growth. To achieve a full understanding of the real development processes of the research sector requires analysis of the dynamics of dozens of indicators for hundreds of organizations. However, the question remains: how can these numerous data series be studied? To address this problem, this article proposes a method of classifying trends in time series based on a combination of three statistical tests of randomness against trend: the Cox-Stuart test, the inversion test of randomness, and the Mann–Kendall test. The method is used to classify a series of scientometric parameters that characterize various aspects of the publication activity of 701 leading Russian research organizations and universities, including a comprehensive publication score (an analogue of the official Composite Score for Publication Performance (CSPP)), the average quality level of publications, and the share of articles in conference proceedings. The differences trends of organizations of different types and performance categories are identified. This article discusses the subsystem of analysis of publication activities, which is an element of the unified information field of an educational organization. The paper demonstrates the possibility of monitoring and analyzing a large amount of data accumulated in it in order to present them in various cross-sections. The paper considers issues of the development, filling, and maintenance of databases of research papers published by authors employed in a given research organization. Such databases should show relationships between entities within the database and links to metadata elements in external databases to enable functional search of bibliometric information with high precision and recall. It is noted that the database should have the ability to export data in the formats required for various reports. A new function of publication databases is described: popularizing and promoting publications in the scientific information space by creating open-access repositories and web mirrors. Finally, the article shares 25 years of experience of supporting a publication database at the Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences that meets all of the modern requirements of the scientometric evaluation of scholarly output and scientific potential of research organizations. Since 2011, in Kazakhstan, one of the main indicators for assessing the effectiveness of researchers is their publication activity in journals indexed by Scopus. The policy implemented by the government had a positive effect on the growth of the number of publications, however, simultaneously, dishonest practices and the use of questionable journals as channels for publication became widespread. This study identifies how the publication management system at a university in Kazakhstan is changing the publication strategies of its staff. The study was conducted based on the data of the internal rating conducted by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) during 2015–2019. Such data were obtained using an automated publication tracking system based on API Scopus. This study shows that introduction of mechanisms aimed to stimulate publication activity in KazNU had a positive effect on the research productivity, but simultaneously led to attempts to manipulate rating indicators on the part of individual researchers. The introduction of indicators based on the quality and impact metrics of the journals, in turn, positively influenced the publication strategy in terms of choice of journals and decrease of publications in journals with dubious reputations. The study results can be used to develop a strategy for publication activity in a university, especially in developing countries faced with publication inflation, an unprecedented increase in publications in "predatory" journals, and the emergence of dishonest practices aimed at manipulating bibliometric indicators. The problem of publications in "predatory" sources is actively discussed in the scientific community, and it has attracted the attention of government agencies responsible for scientific and technological policy. This article attempts to assess the scale of contamination of world scientific products with articles not worthy of publication. The research is based on a list of journals and collections of regular conferences excluded from the Scopus database for reasons of violation of scientific ethics. An analysis of the publications published in these sources in 2010–2019 made it possible to identify the countries and scientific areas that are most affected by the activities of predatory publishers. According to the results of calculations, the problem of scientific garbage has not spared Russia and is most acutely manifested in economic and technical sciences and some areas of medical sciences. The authors formulated conclusions about the sources of this problem and the tactics of counteracting the activities of publication "predators" on the part of states. The question is raised about how to relate to publication in a "garbage" journal and whether it is worthwhile to draw a line between "forced" and "selfish" publications in such periodicals. The aging of the professoriate throughout the end of the twentieth century and the early years of the 2000′s (both before and after the end of mandatory retirement in the United States, ca. 1994) has become a source of concern for some scholars and research administrators, who posit that the "greying" of the academy results in lower research activity and a decline in scientific advancement. Some published opinions concur that senior scholars' research programs do not keep pace with those of their younger colleagues, but little quantitative evidence has been presented to evaluate that claim. In this study, we quantify senior faculty publication activity in six broad fields, comparing their publication rates to their younger colleagues across four modes of knowledge dissemination: journal articles, conference proceedings, books, and book chapters. Career publication activity does not follow the "peak and decline" pattern described in earlier studies. In most fields, journal article publication rates do not decline substantively with age (and in some cases article publication rates are higher among senior scholars), conference proceeding publication rates tend to decline with age, while book and chapter publication rates increase markedly with age. Overall, senior scholars maintain publishing activity levels and tend to shift their focus to the development and evolution of ideas through the publication of longer-format works as books and book chapters. This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of documents arrays with the keywords nanobio- or bionano- in the Scopus Database, Web of Science Core collection, Russian Science Citation Index and VINITI RAS Database using the analytical tools of these resources. The subject distribution, composition of sources, and key terms are considered. Differences in the relevant document arrays of these databases in the case of identical queries are revealed. It is shown that interdisciplinarity in soil science as a scientific area has been growing ever more rapidly in recent years, while the dissemination of related information over different scientific journals has become excessive and still continues to increase. In particular, the number of Russian journals publishing papers on soil science and represented in the eLIBRARY.ru database increased by more than six times in 14 years (2005–2018) and, by the moment of our study, comprised over 600 names of journals and other Russian-language publications. Since 1997, the segment of papers on soil research has finally shifted from the category of soil science to environmental sciences. The Russian array of publications of 1975–2018 on soil research is analyzed in terms of its positioning in the world. Currently, the number of papers on soil science is actively increasing both in Russia and worldwide. The highest growth rate in the Russian document flow in this scientific area was observed in 2016–2018. In the number of publications, Russian soil science is in a good position in the world. Citation analysis demonstrates an increase in the citation rate in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC) and Scopus databases. The popularity of the use of the quartile index in various fields of knowledge is shown; the first mention dates back to the work of R. Kempton and L. Taylor on population biology, published in 1976 in the journal Nature. This index was proposed for the first time for scientometrics in 2019 by the historian A.V. Grinev from St. Petersburg. A number of improvements have been made to this index for the purpose of monitoring and evaluating the qualitative structure of publications by authors and any subjects of publication activity. It shows its significant advantage over Hirsch-like metrics and gives recommendations for its implementation in national and institutional systems for assessing the quality of publication activity. Studies have continuously shown that fewer women than men achieve leadership positions in academic medicine. In the current study we explored gender differences in clinical position among academic physicians at three university hospitals, each in a different European country. These countries, Sweden, the Netherlands and Austria, differ in terms of gender equality. We analyzed whether the number of children, working hours or publications could explain gender differences in physicians' clinical position. In this cross-sectional questionnaire study 1333 (54% female) physicians participated. Physicians were asked about their gender, age, number of children, working hours and clinical position. We used structural equation models to explore the influence of gender on the physicians' clinical position in each of the three countries. We explored whether the association between gender and clinical position could be explained by number of children, working hours or publication activity. The analyses revealed that at all three university hospitals gender influenced clinical position. These gender differences in clinical position could be partly explained by gender differences in publication activity. Female physicians as compared to male physicians were likely to publish fewer articles, and in turn these lower publication numbers were associated with lower clinical positions. The number of children or working hours did not explain gender differences in publication activity or clinical position. Therefore, factors other than unequal allocation of household labor, such as the academic working environment, may still disproportionately disadvantage women's progress, even at universities in countries with high rates of gender equality such as Sweden. The results on the representation of Russian publications in the global array of publications on narrow thematic trends are presented for the entire post-Soviet period against the backdrop of the ranking in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS CC). The Web of Science Categories classifier was used for search and subsequent analysis. Of the 252 WoS CC subject categories, results on 132 scientific trends were obtained in which the share of Russian publications in 2010‒2017 was no less than 0.4% of the global flows in the respective disciplines. As a result, it was discovered that Russia had gradually been restoring its positions, lost after 1993‒2000, in the global rating of countries by the number of publications in the WoS CC. At present, positive changes are observed both for the entire array of Russian publications and as differentiated by narrow scientific subjects. It has been discovered that Russia reached its maximal positions in the ranking in 1993‒1999, while the greatest decline, when the share of Russian publications was minimal, fell to 2011–2014. Data about the scientific trends in which Russia has been among the top ten countries by the share of publications in the global array over the entire post-Soviet period are presented. This list somewhat widened from 2010 through 2017 and now comprises 39 trends in which Russia is among the Top-10; in eight knowledge areas, it is among the top five countries. This paper analyzes the rapidly growing scientific direction of Deep Learning, as one of the most significant parts of artificial intelligence. Using scientometric methods, the growth rates of publications in leading countries and the level of their international cooperation are estimated. The terminological structure of the subject area is investigated and the most perspective directions of studies are revealed. We compare scientometric indicators of Deep Learning with another booming scientific area, Quantum Technology. The conclusion is made that publication activity on Deep Learning is growing faster. It is noted that in both these areas the United States and China are the leaders according to the number of papers. This paper presents the final results of a study on the activities of the scientific diaspora of the Pushchino Scientific Center (PSC RAS) abroad, which began in 2016. The information on the scientific careers of scientists from nine scientific research institutes of the PSC RAS who emigrated abroad for permanent residence is given: the proportion of former scientific researchers who continue to engage in scientific activities, the geography of the distribution of representatives of the diaspora; scientific organizations, where and how successfully they work. The research was conducted using scientometric, bibliometric, bibliographic, factual, and sociological methods. The professional "success" of representatives of the diaspora was assessed according to formal indicators: a Hirsch index (h-index) with a threshold value of 17 and higher; information about publications in the Essential Science Indicators (Clarivate Analytics) at the time of data collection; and distribution of published works by quartiles of publications. An approach to modeling the dynamics of the state of research fronts on the basis of webometric indicators is considered. As a result of the analysis of publication activity, trends in the development of string theory, superstring theory, and M-theory have been revealed. The evolution of the new topical trend for autonomous mobile robots is analyzed by bibliometric techniques. Publication activity indicators are identified. Changes in the number of authors, specialized information sources, and set key words and word collocations were considered. Some attention was paid to the citation rate of publications. The Momentum program launched in 2009 provides funding of up to 1 million Euro to establish new, independent research groups at Hungarian academic institutions. Here, our aim was to determine factors associated with the scientific output of these research groups. Publication data were downloaded from the Hungarian Scientific Work Archive (www.mtmt.hu), impact factor data were obtained from Thomson Reuters (jcr.incites.thomsonreuters.com), and journal ranks were extracted from the Scimago Journal Rank database (www.scimagojr.com). Investigated input features for each grant holder include gender, degree, targeted category, international mobility, international grants, number of publications, total number of citations, H-index, best publications, impact factors in the last 2 years, and assessment scores provided by the experts. Evaluated performance indicators include cumulative impact factor, number of D1 publications, and number of first/last author D1 publications during the grant running time. Grant holders’ publication output increased by 23 and 52% for life sciences and material sciences researchers. Scientific performance was independent from gender, degree, international grants, category applied for, and citations received for the best pre-grant publication. Those with international mobility had significantly lower scientific output (yearly impact factor, number of D1 publications, number of first/last author publications). Scores received from grant review experts were independent from later publication activity. The strongest correlations were observed between scientific output and total number of citations, H-index, and impact factor in the last 2 years pre-grant. In summary, group leaders with a dynamic publication track record were able to attain the most additional momentum. Our results can help accelerate and improve future grant review processes. Bibliometric studies using relevant databases are not only in demand in research institutes, universities, and libraries, but are also widely used in the management of science. A model of bibliometric analysis of the publication flow of specific laboratories is considered. Particular attention is paid to the results of the bibliometric analysis, which was carried out taking the developed criteria into account. The literature on the consequences of academic inbreeding shows ambiguous results: some papers show that inbreeding positively influences research productivity measured by the quantity and quality of publications, while others demonstrate the opposite effect. There are contradictory results both in the studies of different countries and within countries. This variety of results makes it impossible to transfer the findings from one academic system to another, and in Russia this problem has been under-explored. This paper focuses on the relationship between inbreeding and publication activity among Russian faculty. The research was conducted using data from the ‘Monitoring of Educational Markets and Organizations’ survey. The results show that there is no significant effect of academic inbreeding on publication productivity: no substantial and robust differences in publication activity between inbreds and non-inbreds have been found. We discussed several issues related to the systematization of scientific publications in the field of chemistry and chemical technology that are contained in abstract databases such as the Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and the VINITI RAS Chemistry Database. Next we noted a rapid growth of interdisciplinary publications authored by chemists. We discussed the problems of information support in view of the intensifying interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of research. Then we presented the results of an information search performed across several abstract databases for the main subject areas. In the end, we discussed an increase in the number of scientific publications in the field of chemistry and chemical technology, which has accelerated in recent years in comparison to other fields of science. A method for the identification of competence centers is proposed using large scientific and technical document collections and computer-linguistic techniques. Artificial Intelligence was chosen as an example of the problem domain to test this method. The research is carried out on the basis of full-text proceedings of the National Conference on Artificial Intelligence, synopses of candidate’s and doctoral theses, and the ELibrary. Major specialties with respect to defended theses on artificial intelligence were selected, a defense dynamic was constructed, scientometric indicators of scientists who work in the field of artificial intelligence were obtained, and basic competence centers and their specialization were detected. This paper is devoted to the challenges of measuring, analyzing and visualizing research capacity of university. We identify the related methodological issues, propose solutions and apply these solutions to a complex analysis of the research potential of three departments of a Russian university. First, we briefly review the current literature on different aspects of an analysis of research capacity of university. The next step is a discussion on the key challenges faced when analyzing the publication activity of a university. Further, we discuss the opportunities offered by and limitations of using the Web of Science and Scopus databases to determine the research capabilities of universities. In the empirical section of the paper, we analyse the research capacity of university departments and individual employees using simple yet illustrative tools of bibliometric analysis. This paper reports the findings of a study on the positioning of an academic book in the information market. The contribution and significance of academic books to the spheres of science and education has been noted. The quantitative characteristics illustrate the relative stagnation of an academic book publishing based on the data obtained from the Russian Book Chamber. Expert-based evaluations from the leading research and academic libraries indicate that the official statistics are somewhat overstated and the quality of academic books has declined. This paper analysis the composition and success of scientific diasporas from three research institutes of the Pushchino Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences that were formed as a result of the outflow of personnel in the 1990-2014 period. It is shown that the current cooperation of our scientists with representatives of scientific diasporas abroad is very weak. In this regard, it is noted that it is necessary to monitor scientific diasporas at the local level, which will help in establishing bilateral scientific relations. This paper considers the results of scientific research conducted by the Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (CSL NAS of Belarus) using the bibliometric indicators of the Web of Science Core Collection Database (WoS CC): the degree of reflection and citation of articles of Belarusian authors in this database. Attention is paid to the rating of the research institutes of the NAS of Belarus according to scientific productivity. The fields of the scientific work of Belarusian scientists are shown. The paper estimates the productivity of the joint scientific activity of Belarusian scientists and scientists of different countries, which is an indicator of the level of integration of the country into the international scientific community. This article describes the experience in editing organization profiles in Scopus and in the Science Index for organizations system, which is an add-on to the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI). The basic functionalities of the two systems are analyzed and comparison of the Science Index for organizations with the possibilities of editing an organization profile in Scopus is carried out. An attempt is made to give an objective assessment of the current state of the two systems from the user's point of view. The conclusion is made that despite the more extensive functionalities of the Science Index for organizations, the feedback system in Scopus is well thought out and provides better control of changes that are requested by organizations. In the system of editing the profile of an organization in the RSCI the functional tools are characterized by a low level of moderation, which has a formal character; therefore, it can be used not only to edit a profile, but to create unreasonable increases in the values of bibliometric indicators. The approach, methods and algorithms for defining the scientific level of an assigned paper array are expounded. A scientific level is defined, both with respect to specific subject areas (Web of Science Categories), and as some integral indicator with respect to the entire spectrum of topics that correspond to the papers from an assigned array. Web of Science (WoS) indexed papers as well as the most important data elements that describe specific papers (journals, in which they are published; the workplaces of authors, research funds that supported these papers, etc.) are used as initial data. The following now classical bibliometric indicators are used as initial indicators: the number of publications, the impact factor of a journal, and the aggregate impact factor of a WoS subject category. Indicators derived from classical ones are introduced. The calculation of a scientific level is based on the joint application of derived and classical bibliometric indicators. This paper reviews the use of publication activity indicators for the assessment of the qualifications of scientific and teaching staff. A new section entitled The Publication Activities of Scientists in Belarus has been created on the website of the Central Science Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. This section includes a list of periodicals that are available for the publication of scientific results in key areas of research (based on the Web of Knowledge) and a listof Belarusian organizations that are ranked by the h-index and the number of references to their papers according to Scopus. The study focuses on publication activity, citation impact and citation links between publications and patents in biotechnology. The European Union (EU), US, Japan and China are the most important global players. However, the landscape is changing since the EU and the US are losing ground because of challenges from a group of emerging economies. National profiles differ between the two groups of main players and upcoming countries; the focus on red biotechnology in the US and Europe is contrasted by propensity for white and green technology in Asia. Furthermore, the subject profile of biotechnology papers citing patents and cited by patents as well as the relationship between patent citations and citation impact in scientific literature is explored. Papers that cite patents tend to reflect propensity towards white biotechnology while patent-cited publications have a higher relative share in red biotechnology. No significant difference concerning the citation impact of publications 'citing patents' and 'not citing patents' can be found. This is contrasted by the observation that patent-cited papers perform distinctly better in terms of standard bibliometric indicators than comparable publications that are not linked to technology in this direction. This paper gives the results of the scientometric analysis of foreign publications by Kazakh authors that was reflected in the SCOPUS DB in 1991–2008. The publication activity is expressed in 3883 documents, the citation index of which is 10 132. The average share of Kazakh publications in the total worldwide flow is equal to 0.017%. The citation rate of publications was revealed to have significantly grown since the 1996–2000 period. It is shown that most articles were written in English and published in periodical editions. The main themes of publications are represented by physics and chemistry. The leading foreign partners of Kazakhstan in the scientific sphere were determined.
