Background: We have previously shown headache to be highly prevalent in Cameroon. Here we present the attributed burden. We also perform a headache-care needs assessment. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey among adults (18–65 years) in the general population. Multistage cluster-sampling in four regions (Centre, Littoral, West and Adamawa), home to almost half the country's population, generated a representative sample. We used the standardised methodology of the Global Campaign against Headache, including the HARDSHIP questionnaire, with diagnostic questions based on ICHD-3 and enquiries into symptom burden, impaired participation (lost productivity and disengagement from social activity), quality of life (QoL) using WHOQoL-8, and willingness to pay (WTP) for effective care. We defined headache care "need" in terms of likelihood of benefit, counting all those with probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH) or other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15 +), with migraine on ≥ 3 days/month, or with migraine or tension-type headache (TTH) and meeting either of two criteria: a) proportion of time in ictal state (pTIS) > 3.3% and intensity ≥ 2 (moderate-to-severe); or b) ≥ 3 lost days from paid and/or household work in the preceding 3 months. Results: Among 3,100 participants, mean frequency of any headache was 6.7 days/month, mean duration 13.0 h and mean intensity 2.3 (moderate). Mean pTIS was 9.8%, which (with prevalence factored in) diluted to 6.1–7.4% of all time in the population. Most time was spent with H15 + (5.3% of all time), followed by TTH (1.0%) and migraine (0.8%). For all headache, mean lost days/3 months were 3.4 from paid work, 3.0 from household work and 0.6 from social/leisure activities, diluting to 2.5, 2.2 and 0.6 days/3 months in the population. QoL (no headache: 27.9/40) was adversely impacted by pMOH (25.0) and other H15 + (26.0) but not by migraine (28.0) or TTH (28.0). WTP (maximally XAF 4,462.40 [USD 7.65] per month) was not significantly different between headache types. An estimated 37.0% of adult Cameroonians need headache care. Conclusion: Headache disorders in Cameroon are not only prevalent but also associated with high attributed burden, with heavily impaired participation. Background: We aimed to explore the association of sleep duration with depressive symptoms among rural-dwelling older adults in China, and to estimate the impact of substituting sleep with sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) on the association with depressive symptoms. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 2001 rural-dwelling older adults (age ≥ 60 years, 59.2% female). Sleep duration was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. We used accelerometers to assess SB and PA, and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale to assess depressive symptoms. Data were analyzed using restricted cubic splines, compositional logistic regression, and isotemporal substitution models. Results: Restricted cubic spline curves showed a U-shaped association between daily sleep duration and the likelihood of depressive symptoms (P-nonlinear < 0.001). Among older adults with sleep duration < 7 h/day, reallocating 60 min/day spent on SB and PA to sleep were associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 0.81 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.78–0.84) and 0.79 (0.76–0.82), respectively, for depressive symptoms. Among older adults with sleep duration ≥ 7 h/day, reallocating 60 min/day spent in sleep to SB and PA, and reallocating 60 min/day spent on SB to PA were associated with multivariable-adjusted OR of 0.78 (0.74–0.84), 0.73 (0.69–0.78), and 0.94 (0.92–0.96), respectively, for depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Our study reveals a U-shaped association of sleep duration with depressive symptoms in rural older adults and further shows that replacing SB and PA with sleep or vice versa is associated with reduced likelihoods of depressive symptoms depending on sleep duration. Summary: This study aimed to describe the incidence of hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures in patients aged 50 years and over in Belgium between 2010 and 2021. A declining trend in crude and age-adjusted hospitalization incidence was observed, however, the absolute number of hospitalisations for osteoporotic fractures increased due to demographic changes. Purpose: The secular trends of hospitalizations for hip and other osteoporotic fractures between 2010 and 2021 in patients aged 50 years and over in Belgium are unknown. This study aimed to describe the incidence of hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures in patients aged 50 years and over in Belgium between 2010 and 2021. Methods: Population-based, retrospective study based on hospitalization data extracted by the national database NIHDI and demographical data retrieved from the Belgian Federal Bureau for Statistics. Data were combined to determine the crude and age-standardized hospitalization incidence of fractures of the hip, distal femur, pelvis, humerus, wrist, and spine (2010 as the reference year). Results: A total of 445,234 hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures were reported between 2010 and 2021 (excluding 2015). Hospitalizations increased by 5.8% between 2010 and 2021 (p = 0.013) with a higher increase in men (12.1%; p = 0.001) compared to women (4.1%; p = 0.041). The crude incidence of hospitalizations for all fractures per 100,000 persons per year decreased from 990 to 910 between 2010 and 2021 (p = 0.572). The age-standardized incidence for hospitalizations of any osteoporotic fracture in men declined from 5.30/1,000 to 4.42/1,000 (p = 0.010). In women, a similar decrease was observed (13.84/1,000 to 11.62/1,000; p = 0.003). Both age-standardized hospitalizations for hip and non-hip fractures showed a decrease in both sexes. Conclusion: Although a declining trend in the crude incidence per 100,000 and in the age-adjusted incidence of hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures was observed, the absolute number of hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures increased due to the demographic change of an ageing population. Air pollution is associated with elevated cardiovascular mortality and an increase in cardiovascular risk factors. However, the literature data on associations between air pollution and cardiovascular risk factors are contradictory. To explore the relationship between residential exposure to atmospheric pollutants and cardiovascular risk factors (lipid biomarker and blood pressure levels). We studied a sample of 2339 adult participants in the ELISABET study from the Dunkirk and Lille urban areas of France. The mean annual exposure to atmospheric pollutants (PM10, NO2 and SO2) at the home address was estimated via an air dispersion model. The associations were probed in multivariate linear regression models. The mean NO2 level was 26.05 μg/m3 in Lille and 19.96 µg/m3 in Dunkirk. The mean PM10 level was 27.02 μg/m3 in Lille and 26.53 μg/m3 in Dunkirk. We detected a significant association between exposure to air pollutants and the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (which is a protective factor against cardiovascular diseases) level: for a 2 µg/m3 increment in PM10, the HDL level decreased by 1.72% (p = 0.0037). None of the associations with other lipid variables or with blood pressure were significant. We didn’t find evidence significant associations for most of the risk factors but, long-term exposure of adults to moderate levels of ambient air pollution was associated with a decrement in HDL. Summary: In a Norwegian youth cohort followed from adolescence to young adulthood, bone mineral density (BMD) levels declined at the femoral neck and total hip from 16 to 27 years but continued to increase at the total body indicating a site-specific attainment of peak bone mass. Purpose: To examine longitudinal trends in bone mineral density (BMD) levels in Norwegian adolescents into young adulthood. Method: In a prospective cohort design, we followed 980 adolescents (473 (48%) females) aged 16–19 years into adulthood (age of 26–29) on three occasions: 2010–2011 (Fit Futures 1 (FF1)), 2012–2013 (FF2), and 2021–2022 (FF3), measuring BMD (g/cm2) at the femoral neck, total hip, and total body with dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). We used linear mixed models to examine longitudinal BMD changes from FF1 to FF3. Results: From the median age of 16 years (FF1), femoral neck BMD (mean g/cm2 (95% CI)) slightly increased in females from 1.070 (1.059–1.082) to 1.076 (1.065–1.088, p = 0.015) at the median age of 18 years (FF2) but declined to 1.041 (1.029–1.053, p < 0.001) at the median age of 27 years (FF3). Similar patterns were observed in males: 16 years, 1.104 (1.091–1.116); 27 years, 1.063 (1.050–1.077, p < 0.001); and for the total hip in both sexes (both p < 0.001). Total body BMD increased from age 16 to 27 years in both sexes (females: 16 years, 1.141 (1.133–1.148); 27 years, 1.204 (1.196–1.212), p < 0.001; males: 16 years, 1.179 (1.170–1.188); 27 years, 1.310 (1.296–1.315), p < 0.001). Conclusion: BMD levels increased from 16 to 18 years at the femoral and total hip sites in young Norwegian females and males, and a small decline was observed at the femoral sites when the participants were followed up to 27 years. Background: India is a large and populous country where reliable data on headache disorders are relatively scarce. This study in northern India (Delhi and National Capital Territory Region [NCR], including surrounding districts in the States of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan) continues the series of population-based studies within the Global Campaign against Headache and follows an earlier study, using the same protocol and questionnaire, in the southern State of Karnataka. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the Global Campaign's established methodology. Biologically unrelated Indian nationals aged 18–65 years were included through multistage random sampling in both urban and rural areas of NCR. Interviews at unannounced household visits followed the structured Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) questionnaire in its original English version or in the validated Hindi version. Demographic enquiry was followed by a neutral headache screening question and diagnostic questions based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders edition 3 (ICHD-3), which focused on each respondent's most bothersome headache. Questions about headache yesterday (HY) enabled estimation of 1-day prevalence. A diagnostic algorithm first identified participants reporting headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+), diagnosing probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH) in those also reporting acute medication use on ≥ 15 days/month, and "other H15+" in those not. To all others, the algorithm applied ICHD-3 criteria in the order definite migraine, definite tension-type headache (TTH), probable migraine, probable TTH. Definite and probable diagnoses were combined. Results: Adjusted for age, gender and habitation, 1-year prevalences were 26.3% for migraine, 34.1% for TTH, 3.0% for pMOH and 4.5% for other H15+. Female preponderance was seen in all headache types except TTH: migraine 35.7% vs. 15.1% (aOR = 3.3; p < 0.001); pMOH 4.3% vs. 0.7% (aOR = 5.1; p < 0.001); other H15 + 5.9% vs. 2.3% (aOR = 2.5; p = 0.08). One-day prevalence of (any) headache was 12.0%, based on reported HY. One-day prevalence predicted from 1-year prevalence and mean recalled headache frequency over 3 months was slightly lower (10.5%). Conclusions: The prevalences of migraine and TTH in Delhi and NCR substantially exceed global means. They closely match those in the Karnataka study: migraine 25.2%, TTH 35.1%. The human oral microbiome may alter oral and systemic disease risk. Consuming high sugar content beverages (HSB) can lead to caries development by altering the microbial composition in dental plaque, but little is known regarding HSB-specific oral microbial alterations. Therefore, we conducted a large, population-based study to examine associations of HSB intake with oral microbiome diversity and composition. Using mouthwash samples of 989 individuals in two nationwide U.S. cohorts, bacterial 16S rRNA genes were amplified, sequenced, and assigned to bacterial taxa. HSB intake was quantified from food frequency questionnaires as low (< 1 serving/week), medium (1–3 servings/week), or high (> 3 servings/week). We assessed overall bacterial diversity and presence of specific taxa with respect to HSB intake in each cohort separately and combined in a meta-analysis. Consistently in the two cohorts, we found lower species richness in high HSB consumers (> 3 cans/week) (p = 0.027), and that overall bacterial community profiles differed from those of non-consumers (PERMANOVA p = 0.040). Specifically, presence of a network of commensal bacteria (Lachnospiraceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, and Alloprevotella rava) was less common in high compared to non-consumers, as were other species including Campylobacter showae, Prevotella oulorum, and Mycoplasma faucium. Presence of acidogenic bacteria Bifodobacteriaceae and Lactobacillus rhamnosus was more common in high consumers. Abundance of Fusobacteriales and its genus Leptotrichia, Lachnoanaerobaculum sp., and Campylobacter were lower with higher HSB consumption, and their abundances were correlated. No significant interaction was found for these associations with diabetic status or with microbial markers for caries (S. mutans) and periodontitis (P. gingivalis). Our results suggest that soft drink intake may alter the salivary microbiota, with consistent results across two independent cohorts. The observed perturbations of overrepresented acidogenic bacteria and underrepresented commensal bacteria in high HSB consumers may have implications for oral and systemic disease risk. Purpose: To analyse the evolution of the oral health of 4-year-old children in nursery school between 2001 and 2018 as well as the early predictor and associated risk factors, in different school areas. Methods: We compared (1) the prevalence of ECC (4 ≥ dmft ≥ 1) and S-ECC (dmft ≥ 5) of 4-year-old children and (2) data obtained by a structured questionnaire completed by their parents from two studies performed in 2001 and 2018. Data were analysed using the Chi2 test and odds ratio (OR). Results: A total of 322 children and of 425 children randomly selected among Moselle's public nursery schools in north-eastern France were, respectively, included in the study in 2001 and 2018. The prevalence of ECC was respectively 40.70% and 21.65% in 2001 and 2018 (p < 0.001; OR = 2.48; 95% CI = 1.78–3.47). We also observed a decrease of S-ECC prevalence (10.56% in 2001 vs 5.90% in 2018, p < 0.05, OR = 1.89; 95% CI = 1.07–3.38). The intake of cariogenic food (sweet drink, biscuits, candies, milk, baby bottle) decreased but the knowledge of parents concerning cariogenic food did not improve. The proportion of parents helping their child has not changed in 17 years (82.33% vs 86.52%, p > 0.1) but tooth brushing was initiated earlier in 2018 than in 2001 (p < 0.01). Prescription of systemic fluoride decreased (39.14% vs 3.62%; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The identification of the food consumption habits and the knowledge of parents concerning oral health should enable strengthening of preventive measures and the initiation of an oral health education programme for children and their family. Objective: To investigate the prevalence and associated factors of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. Methods: We collected data on demographic, epidemiological, and clinical factors via in-person interviews and clinical examinations following a structured questionnaire. The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to assess depressive symptoms, the Berlin questionnaire (BQ) to assess obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk; and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to assess sleep characteristics. EDS was defined as the total ESS score > 10. Results: This population-based study engaged 4845 participants (age ≥ 65 years, 57.3% female) in the 2018 examination of the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China. The prevalence of EDS was 9.3% in the total sample, 8.3% in females, and 10.6% in males, and the prevalence decreased with advanced age. Logistic regression analysis revealed that EDS was significantly associated with age (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95–0.99), female sex (0.53; 0.36–0.77), hypertension (0.68; 0.54–0.85), depressive symptoms (2.68; 2.07–3.46), high OSA risk (2.11; 1.69–2.63), and poor sleep quality (2.12; 1.60–2.82). Conclusion: EDS affects nearly one-tenth of rural older adults in China. Older age, female sex, and hypertension were associated with a decreased likelihood of EDS, while depressive symptoms, high OSA risk, and poor sleep quality were correlated with an elevated likelihood of EDS. Purpose: There have been limited studies examining the prospective association between the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), a novel inflammatory marker, and mortality among individuals with diabetes in the United States. Methods: We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a representative sample of US adults, linked with information from the National Death Index. Results: Our study included 8697 individuals from NHANES spanning the years 1999 to 2018. SII was calculated by dividing the platelet count by the neutrophil count and then dividing that result by the lymphocyte count. We employed multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to investigate the associations between SII levels and all-cause as well as cause-specific mortality, while adjusting for potential confounding factors. SII levels were categorized into quartiles based on the study population distribution. Over a median follow-up period of 94.8 months (with a maximum of 249 months), we observed a total of 2465 all-cause deaths, 853 deaths from cardiovascular causes, 424 deaths from cancer, and 88 deaths related to chronic kidney disease. After adjusting for multiple variables, higher SII levels were significantly and non-linearly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in Quartile 4 (HR 1.74, 95% CI 1.15–2.63, P for trend = 0.043) when Quartile 1 was used as the reference group. Additionally, we identified a linear association between SII and cardiovascular mortality, with a 70% higher risk of cardiovascular mortality in Quartile 4 (HR 1.70, 95% CI 1.18–3.30, P for trend = 0.041) compared to Quartile 1. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that SII is significantly associated with an elevated risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in US adults with diabetes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To analyze sleep characteristics as measured with polysomnography (PSG) in adults from the general population with and without physician-diagnosed atopic dermatitis (AD). Methods: We analyzed data from participants from the German population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) TREND-0. AD was diagnosed in a standardized skin examination. The following polysomnographic parameters were measured: total sleep duration (min), sleep latency (min), wake after sleep onset (WASO; min), rapid eye movement (REM) latency (min), sleep efficiency (%), total number of wakefulness and movement episodes, stages of sleep (%), and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Additionally, the subjective sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We compared sleep characteristics of participants with and without AD. Results: Among 1187 participants, 47 (4.0%) had AD. We found no differences between participants with and without AD in any of the analyzed PSG parameters except for the total number of wakefulness and movement episodes and the percentage of REM sleep. Participants with AD had a higher number of wakefulness and movement episodes, and a lower proportion of REM sleep compared to those without AD. Regarding subjective sleep parameters, no significant differences were found between participants with and without AD. Conclusion: Our data do not provide evidence for poor sleep quality in individuals with AD. Major limitations of the study include the unavailability of data on AD severity and the small number of participants with AD. Background: The series of population-based studies conducted by the Global Campaign against Headache has, so far, included Pakistan and Saudi Arabia from the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The Maghreb countries of North Africa, also part of this Region, are geographically apart and culturally very different from these countries. Here we report a study in Morocco. Methods: We applied the standardised methodology of Global Campaign studies, with cluster-randomized sampling in regions of Morocco selected to be representative of its diversities. In three of these regions, in accordance with this methodology, we made unannounced visits to randomly selected households and, from each, interviewed one randomly selected adult member (aged 18–65 years) using the HARDSHIP structured questionnaire translated into Moroccan Arabic and French. In a fourth region (Fès), because permission for such sampling was not given by the administrative authority, people were randomly stopped in streets and markets and, when willing, interviewed using the same questionnaire. This was a major protocol violation. Results: We included 3,474 participants, 1,074 (41.7%) from Agadir, 1,079 (41.9%) from Marrakech, 422 (16.4%) from Tétouan and 899 from Fès. In a second protocol violation, interviewers failed to record the non-participating proportion. In the main analysis, excluding Fès, observed 1-year prevalence of any headache was 80.1% among females, 68.2% among males. Observed 1-day prevalence (headache yesterday) was 17.8%. After adjustment for age and gender, migraine prevalence was 30.8% (higher among females [aOR = 1.6]) and TTH prevalence 32.1% (lower among females [aOR = 0.8]). Headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+) was very common (10.5%), and in more than half of cases (5.9%) associated with acute medication overuse (on ≥ 15 days/month) and accordingly diagnosed as probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH). Both pMOH (aOR = 2.6) and other H15+ (aOR = 1.9) were more common among females. In the Fès sample, adjusted prevalences were similar, numerically but not significantly higher except for other H15+. Conclusions: While the 1-year prevalence of headache among adults in Morocco is similar to that of many other countries, migraine on the evidence here is at the upper end of the global range, but not outside it. Background: The Global Campaign against Headache is conducting a series of population-based studies to fill the large geographical gaps in knowledge of headache prevalence and attributable burden. One major region not until now included is South America. Here we present a study from Peru, a country of 32.4 million inhabitants located at the west coast of South America, notable for its high Andes mountains. Methods: The study was conducted in accordance with the standardized methodology used by the Global Campaign. It was a cross-sectional survey using cluster randomised sampling in five regions to derive a nationally representative sample, visiting households unannounced, and interviewing one randomly selected adult member (aged 18–65 years) of each using the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) questionnaire translated into South American Spanish. The neutral screening question ("Have you had headache in the last year?") was followed by diagnostic questions based on ICHD-3 and demographic enquiry. Results: The study included 2,149 participants from 2,385 eligible households (participating proportion 90.1%): 1,065 males and 1,084 females, mean age 42.0 ± 13.7 years. The observed 1-year prevalence of all headache was 64.6% [95% CI: 62.5–66.6], with age-, gender- and habitation-adjusted prevalences of 22.8% [21.0-24.6] for migraine (definite + probable), 38.9% [36.8–41.0] for tension-type headache (TTH: also definite + probable), 1.2% [0.8–1.8] for probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH) and 2.7% [2.1–3.5] for other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+). One-day prevalence of headache (reported headache yesterday) was 12.1%. Migraine was almost twice as prevalent among females (28.2%) as males (16.4%; aOR = 2.1; p < 0.001), and strongly associated with living at very high altitude (aOR = 2.5 for > 3,500 versus < 350 m). Conclusion: The Global Campaign's first population-based study in South America found headache disorders to be common in Peru, with prevalence estimates for both migraine and TTH substantially exceeding global estimates. H15 + was also common, but with fewer than one third of cases diagnosed as pMOH. The association between migraine and altitude was confirmed, and found to be strengthened at very high altitude. In recent years, the association between neuroinflammatory markers and dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease (AD), has attracted much attention. However, the evidence for the relationship between serum-hs-CRP and dementia including AD are inconsistent. Therefore, the relationships of serum high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) with dementia including AD and with regions of interest of brain MRI were investigated. A total of 11,957 community residents aged 65 years or older were recruited in eight sites in Japan (JPSC-AD Study). After applying exclusion criteria, 10,085 participants who underwent blood tests and health-related examinations were analyzed. Then, serum hs-CRP levels were classified according to clinical cutoff values, and odds ratios for the presence of all-cause dementia and its subtypes were calculated for each serum hs-CRP level. In addition, the association between serum hs-CRP and brain volume regions of interest was also examined using analysis of covariance with data from 8614 individuals in the same cohort who underwent brain MRI. After multivariable adjustment, the odds ratios (ORs) for all-cause dementia were 1.04 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.76–1.43), 1.68 (95%CI 1.08–2.61), and 1.51 (95%CI 1.08–2.11) for 1.0–1.9 mg/L, 2.0–2.9 mg/L, and ≥ 3.0 mg/L, respectively, compared to < 1.0 mg/L, and those for AD were 0.72 (95%CI 0.48–1.08), 1.76 (95%CI 1.08–2.89), and 1.61 (95%CI 1.11–2.35), for 1.0–1.9 mg/L, 2.0–2.9 mg/L, and ≥ 3.0 mg/L, respectively, compared to < 1.0 mg/L. Multivariable-adjusted ORs for all-cause dementia and for AD prevalence increased significantly with increasing serum hs-CRP levels (p for trend < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). In addition, the multivariable-adjusted temporal cortex volume/estimated total intracranial volume ratio decreased significantly with increasing serum hs-CRP levels (< 1.0 mg/L 4.28%, 1.0–1.9 mg/L 4.27%, 2.0–2.9 mg/L 4.29%, ≥ 3.0 mg/L 4.21%; p for trend = 0.004). This study's results suggest that elevated serum hs-CRP levels are associated with greater risk of presence of dementia, especially AD, and of temporal cortex atrophy in a community-dwelling Japanese older population. Background: Knowledge of headache prevalence, and the burdens attributable to headache disorders, remains incomplete in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): reliable studies have been conducted only in Zambia (southern SSA) and Ethiopia (eastern SSA). As part of the Global Campaign against Headache, we investigated the prevalence of headache in Cameroon, in Central SSA. Methods: We used the same methodology as the studies in Zambia and Ethiopia, employing cluster-randomized sampling in four regions of Cameroon, selected to reflect the country's geographic, ethnic and cultural diversities. We visited, unannounced, randomly selected households in each region, and randomly selected one adult member (aged 18–65 years) of each. Trained interviewers administered the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) structured questionnaire, developed by an international expert consensus group and translated into Central African French. Demographic enquiry was followed by diagnostic questions based on ICHD-3 criteria. Results: Headache was a near-universal experience in Cameroon (lifetime prevalence: 94.8%). Observed 1-year prevalence of headache was 77.1%. Age- and gender-adjusted estimates were 76.4% (95% confidence interval: 74.9–77.9) for any headache, 17.9% (16.6–19.3) for migraine (definite + probable), 44.4% (42.6–46.2) for tension-type headache (TTH; also definite + probable), 6.5% (5.7–7.4) for probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH) and 6.6% (5.8–7.6) for other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15 +). One-day prevalence ("headache yesterday") was 15.3%. Gender differentials were as expected (more migraine and pMOH among females, and rather more TTH among males). pMOH increased in prevalence until age 55 years, then declined somewhat. Migraine and TTH were both associated with urban dwelling, pMOH, in contrast, with rural dwelling. Conclusions: Headache disorders are prevalent in Cameroon. As in Zambia and Ethiopia, estimates for both migraine and TTH exceed global mean estimates. Attributable burden is yet to be reported, but these findings must lead to further research, and measures to develop and implement headache services in Cameroon, with appropriate management and preventative strategies. Background: Knowledge of the prevalence and attributable burden of headache disorders in India is sparse, with only two recent population-based studies from South and East India. These produced conflicting results. A study in North India is needed. We report the methodology of such a study using, and validating, a Hindi translation of the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap, and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) questionnaire developed by Lifting The Burden (LTB). Almost half of the Indian population speak Hindi or one of its dialects. Methods: The study adopted LTB's standardized protocol for population-based studies in a cross-sectional survey using multistage random sampling conducted in urban Delhi and a surrounding rural area. Trained interviewers visited households unannounced, randomly selected one adult member from each and applied the Hindi version of HARDSHIP in face-to-face interviews. The most bothersome headache reported by participants was classified algorithmically into headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15 +), migraine (including definite and probable) or tension-type headache (including definite and probable). These diagnoses were mutually exclusive. All participants diagnosed with H15 + and a 10% subsample of all others were additionally assessed by headache specialists and classified as above. We estimated the sensitivity and specificity of HARDSHIP diagnoses by comparison with the specialists' diagnoses. Results: From 3,040 eligible households, 2,066 participants were interviewed. The participating proportions were 98.3% in rural areas but 52.9% in urban Delhi. In the validation subsample of 291 participants (149 rural, 142 urban), 61 did not report any headache (seven of those assessed by HARDSHIP, eight by headache specialists and 46 by both) [kappa = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.74-0.91]. In the remaining 230 participants who reported headache in the preceding year, sensitivity, specificity and kappa with (95% CI) were 0.73 (0.65-0.79), 0.80 (0.67-0.90) and 0.43 (0.34-0.58) for migraine; 0.71 (0.56-0.83), 0.80 (0.730.85) and 0.43 (0.37-0.62) for TTH and 0.75 (0.47-0.94), 0.93 (0.89-0.96) and 0.46 (0.34-0.58) for H15 + respectively. Conclusion: This study validates the Hindi version of HARDSHIP, finding its performance similar to those of other versions. Telomere shortening is a biological aging hallmark. The effect of short telomere length may be targeted by increased physical activity to reduce the risk of multiple aging-related diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD). The objective was to assess the moderation effect of accelerometer-based physical activity (aPA) on the association between shorter leukocyte telomere length (LTL) relatively in the population sample and incident CHD. Data were from the UK Biobank participants with well-calibrated accelerometer data for at least 6.5 days (n = 54,180). Relative mean LTL at baseline (5–6 years prior to aPA assessment) was measured in T/S ratio, using a multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology, by comparing the amount of the telomere amplification product (T) to that of a single-copy gene (S). aPA measures included total number of events (at least 10-s continued physical activity > 32 milligravities [mg]), total volume, mean duration, mean intensity, and peak intensity of all events. LTL, aPA measures, and their interactions were associated with incident CHD (mean follow-up 6.8 years) using Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for covariates. Longer LTL (relative to the sample distribution) was associated with reduced incidence of CHD (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.94 per standard deviation [SD] increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.90 to 0.99], P =.010). Incidence of CHD was reduced by higher total volume of aPA (aHR = 0.82 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 0.71 to 0.95], P =.010) but increased by higher total number of events (aHR = 1.11 per SD increase in LTL, [95% CI, 1.02 to 1.21], P =.020) after controlling for other aPA measures and covariates. Background: In recent years, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) was a new indicator of insulin resistance, and it has been widely reported that it may be associated with serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentrations. Aims: We intended to investigate the possible connection between serum PSA concentration and the TyG index. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of adults with complete data on TyG and serum PSA concentrations (ng/ml) from the NHANES, 2003–2010. The TyG index is obtained by the formula below: TyG = Ln [triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose(mg/dL)/2]. Multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis were used to examine the connection between the TyG index and serum PSA levels. Results: Multiple regression analysis of the weighted linear model showed that individuals with a higher TyG index had lower PSA levels. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests showed no apparent dependence on age, race/ethnicity, BMI, household income ratio, education level, and marital status on this negative association (all interactions p > 0.05). Introduction: Current guidelines recommendations regarding chemotherapy in small (T1b and T1c), node-negative triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) differ due to lack of high-quality data. Our study aimed to assess the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with T1bN0M0 and T1cN0M0 TNBC. Methods: We obtained data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database for patients with node-negative, T1b/T1c TNBC diagnosed between 2010 and 2020. Logistic regresion models assessed variables associated with chemotherapy administration. We evaluated the effect of chemotherapy on overall survival (OS) and breast cancer specific survival (BCSS) with Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox proportional hazards methods. Results: We included 11,510 patients: 3,388 with T1b and 8,122 with T1c TNBC. During a median follow-up of 66 months, 305 patients with T1b and 995 with T1c died. After adjusting for clinicopathological, demographic and treatment factors, adjuvant chemotherapy improved OS in T1b TNBC (HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.41–0.68 p < 0.001) but did not improve BCSS (HR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.45–1.07; p = 0.10); the association between chemotherapy and BCSS was not statistically significant in any subgroup. In T1c TNBC, adjuvant chemotherapy improved OS (HR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.47–0.62; p < 0.001) and BCSS (HR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.63–0.99; p = 0.043); the benefit of chemotherapy in OS varied by age (Pinteraction=0.024); moreover, the benefit in BCSS was similar in all subgroups. Conclusions: Our study results support the use of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with node-negative, T1c TNBC. Purpose: This study aims to examine the magnitude of out of pocket (OOP) payments and income loss, as well as to identify socioeconomic and clinical factors among long-term breast cancer (BC) survivors in Germany. Methods: We examine data from 2654 long-term BC survivors in Germany that participated in the "CAncEr Survivorship – A multi-Regional population-based study" (CAESAR) and who were at least 5 years post diagnosis. BC-related OOP payments and income loss both within the 12 months prior to the survey were analyzed. Two-part regression models were performed to identify socioeconomic and clinical factors. Results: OOP payments were incurred by 51.9% of survivors with a total mean spending of 566 euros. Income loss was present among 9.6% of survivors and averaged 5463 euros among those reporting such. Socioeconomic and clinical factors associated with higher OOP payments (p ≤ 0.05) included age at time of diagnosis (65–79 years), education (10–11 years), (early) retirement, stage of diagnosis (stage III), time from diagnosis (more than 10 years), comorbidities (at least 1), and the use of rehabilitation services. Regarding income loss, age at time of diagnosis (50–59 years), (early) retirement, stage of diagnosis (stage II), time from diagnosis (5–7 years), comorbidities (at least 1), and receiving chemotherapy treatment were associated with higher losses. Conclusions: For some survivors in Germany, financial burden can be considerably high despite comprehensive healthcare and support from social security. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the maternal and perinatal outcomes of pregnant patients with CRC using a large population-based database. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) from 2009 to 2019. Pregnant patients with and without CRC were compared for demographic characteristics, comorbidities, maternal and perinatal outcomes, and hospital burden. Results: The study included 306 pregnancies with CRC and 40,887,353 pregnancies without CRC. Pregnant patients with CRC were older and more likely to be White. A significant association was observed between CRC and a history of inflammatory bowel disease or a family history of gastrointestinal cancer. Pregnant patients with CRC had higher odds of maternal death (AOR 260.99, 95% CI 33.36–2041.64), cardiac arrhythmia (AOR 13.73, 95% CI 4.21–44.76), acute kidney injury (AOR 32.6, 95% CI 5.29–200.77), severe sepsis (AOR 163.98, 95% CI 22.05–1219.65), and respiratory failure (AOR 31.67, 95% CI 4.11–243.98). Furthermore, the CRC group experienced higher odds of cesarean section (AOR 1.78, 95% CI 1.05–3.03), preterm birth (AOR 4.16, 95% CI 2.05–8.47), and intrauterine death (AOR 13.18, 95% CI 3.33–52.16). Distinct differences in maternal and perinatal outcomes were observed based on the location of CRC. Pregnant patients with CRC faced higher hospital charges and had longer hospital stays during delivery hospitalization compared to those without CRC. Conclusion: Pregnant patients with CRC are at increased risk for adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, emphasizing the importance of early detection, timely intervention, and comprehensive management during pregnancy. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread contaminants, but few studies have explored the relationship between PFAS and levels of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the population. The available evidence of an association is also conflicting. We selected adults and adolescents with complete PFAS data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2003 and 2018. We analyzed the association between PFAS and MetS using multivariate logistic regression models and evaluated potential nonlinear relationships with restricted cubic spline models. Additionally, we employed weighted quantile sum (WQS) regressions to uncover the multiple exposure effects and relative weights of each PFAS. Finally, we conducted a series of sensitivity analyses to test the robustness of our findings. In this population-based study, we analyzed data from a total of 4,973 adults, aged 20–85 years, and 1,381 adolescents, aged 12–19 years. Using fully adjusted multivariate logistic regression models, we found that serum levels of perfluorodecanoate (PFDA) [0.65 (0.50, 0.85)] and total PFAS [0.92 (0.85, 0.99)] were negatively associated with the prevalence of MetS in adults. Similarly, in adolescents, we observed negative correlations between the prevalence of MetS and levels of PFDA [0.55 (0.38, 0.80)], perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) [0.62 (0.39, 1.00)], perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) [0.59 (0.36, 0.96)], and total PFAS [0.61 (0.37, 0.99)]. Additionally, our study identified statistically significant negative associations between serum levels of PFAS and certain components of MetS, primarily elevated fasting glucose and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Our study found that PFAS was associated with a lower prevalence of MetS in both adults and adolescents, offering new insights into the relationship between PFAS and metabolic health. Interestingly, however, we observed conflicting findings across the components of MetS. Specifically, we observed that PFAS had a negative correlation with some metrics and a positive correlation with others. Background: Emerging evidence has linked elevated resting heart rate (RHR) with poor cognitive function in older adults, but the mechanisms underlying their association are poorly understood. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 4510 dementia-free participants (age ≥ 65 years; 56.9% females; 38.3% no formal education) in the baseline examination of the Multidomain Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China study. Of these, 1,386 had data on serum proinflammatory cytokines and adhesion molecules. RHR was measured using 12-lead electrocardiograph. We used the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a neuropsychological test battery to assess cognitive function. Data were analyzed using the general linear and restricted cubic splines models. Results: People with high RHR were more likely to have cardiometabolic diseases and worse cognitive function (p < 0.05). There was an inverted J-shaped association of RHR with MMSE and attention scores. Having RHR ≥ 80 bpm (vs. 60–69 bpm) was significantly associated with the multivariable-adjusted β coefficients of − 0.58 [95% confidence interval (CI), − 1.00, − 0.16] for MMSE score and − 0.08 (− 0.15, − 0.01) for attention score. In the serum biomarker subsample, RHR was linearly associated with serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) (β coefficient = 0.19; 95%CI 0.14, 0.24), IL-8 (0.08; 0.02, 0.13), IL-10 (0.09; 0.04, 0.15), tumor necrosis factor-α (0.06; 0.01, 0.11), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (0.09; 0.04, 0.15), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (0.16; 0.11, 0.22), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (0.11; 0.06, 0.16). Conclusions: There is an inverted J-shaped association of RHR with attention and global cognition. Purpose: Previous studies have examined the optimal mode of breech delivery extensively, but there is a scarcity of publications focusing on the birth injuries of neonates born in breech presentation. This study aimed to examine birth injury in breech deliveries. Methods: In this retrospective register-based nationwide cohort study, data on birth injuries in vaginal breech deliveries with singleton live births were compared to cesarean section with breech presentation and cephalic vaginal delivery between 2004 and 2017 in Finland. The data were retrieved from the National Medical Birth Register. Primary outcome variables were severe and mild birth injury. Incidences of birth injuries in different gestational ages and birthweights were calculated in different modes of delivery. Crude odds ratios of risk factors for severe birth injury were analyzed. Results: In vaginal breech delivery (n = 4344), there were 0.8% of neonates with severe birth injury and 1.5% of neonates with mild birth injury compared to 0.06% and 0.2% in breech cesarean section (n = 16,979) and 0.3% and 1.9% in cephalic vaginal delivery (n = 629,182). Brachial plexus palsy was the most common type of injury in vaginal breech delivery. Increasing gestational age and birthweight had a stronger effect on the risk for injury among cephalic vaginal deliveries than among vaginal breech deliveries. Conclusion: Birth injuries were rare in vaginal breech deliveries. The incidence of severe birth injury was two times higher in vaginal breech delivery compared to cephalic vaginal delivery. Adolescents exposed to child maltreatment are at increased risk for various somatic symptoms, but which psychological factors that contribute to this relationship need to be further investigated. Emotion dysregulation is suggested to serve as a proximal link between child maltreatment and somatic complaints. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether individual differences in affective inhibitory control, a central component in implicit emotion regulation, contribute to the risk of somatic symptoms in adolescents exposed to child maltreatment. Data were drawn from the UEVO study, a national population-based survey of adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age (N = 9240). For this study, we included participants who completed the emotional go/no-go task measuring affective inhibitory control (N = 7241; Mage/SD = 14 years/.87; 52% girls, 47% boys), of which N = 3349 reported at least one incident of maltreatment exposure (57% girls, 41% boys). Exposure to psychological abuse and sexual abuse were associated with somatic symptoms. Affective inhibitory control was related to somatic symptoms, both in the total sample and in adolescents exposed to child maltreatment. The strength of relationships between exposure to psychological abuse and somatic symptoms, as well as sexual abuse and somatic symptoms, were moderated by individual differences in affective inhibitory control problems. Our study suggests that psychological abuse and sexual abuse increase the risk for somatic symptoms in adolescence. Affective inhibitory control, a central component in implicit emotion regulation, was related to somatic symptoms and moderated the relationships between psychological abuse and somatic symptoms, and sexual abuse and somatic symptoms. Revealing these associations in a population-based sample indicates that treatment targeting affective inhibitory control may be beneficial and should be explored further in clinical settings. Background: Pediatric severe sepsis (PSS) is associated with increased mortality, and acute kidney injury (AKI) is an independent risk factor of mortality in PSS. However, there is little data on impact of AKI on hospital outcomes in PSS. Methods: We analyzed non-overlapping years of the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) and National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database between 2003 and 2019 of all pediatric patients with severe sepsis between 1 and 18 years of age. Using ICD diagnosis codes, patients were divided into two groups based on AKI status and compared for outcomes measures including in-hospital mortality and healthcare resource utilization using length of stay and inflation-adjusted hospitalization charges. Results: We analyzed 192,712 hospitalizations due to PSS during the 17-year period. Prevalence of AKI was 23.6% with overall increasing trend, P<0.001. Prevalence of AKI was significantly increased in patients with diabetes mellitus, organ transplantation, HIV, urinary tract anomalies, and malnutrition, P<0.001. Mortality rate was significantly higher among patients with AKI (19.8% vs. 8.1%, P<0.001). PSS with AKI had significantly higher median length of stay (14 vs. 11 days) and total hospitalization charges ($168,106 vs. 100,906), P<0.001. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that AKI without kidney replacement therapy (KRT) was associated with 3.02 times increased odds of mortality (95% CI 2.99–3.17, P<0.001) and those requiring KRT had 6.4 times increased odds of mortality (95%CI 6.1–6.7, P<0.001). AKI without KRT was associated with 7.7 (95% CI 7.3–8.05) additional days of hospitalization and 154,536 (95% CI 149,500–159,572) additional US dollars in hospitalization charges. Conclusion: Almost 1 in 4 hospitalizations with PSS had AKI and was associated with >3 times increased risk of mortality and need for KRT further adversely impacts mortality and healthcare utilization. Background: There are little data on positioning biologics in Crohn's disease (CD). Aims: We aimed to assess the comparative effectiveness and safety of ustekinumab vs tumour necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNF) agents after first-line treatment with anti-TNF in CD. Methods: We used Swedish nationwide registers to identify patients with CD, exposed to anti-TNF who initiated second-line biologic treatment with ustekinumab or second-line anti-TNF therapy. Nearest neighbour 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the groups. The primary outcome was 3-year drug survival used as a proxy for effectiveness. Secondary outcomes included drug survival without hospital admission, CD-related surgery, antibiotics, hospitalization due to infection and exposure to corticosteroids. Results: Some 312 patients remained after PSM. Drug survival at 3 years was 35% (95% CI 26–44%) in ustekinumab compared to 36% (95% CI 28–44%) in anti-TNF-treated patients (p = 0.72). No statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in 3-year survival without hospital admission (72% vs 70%, p = 0.99), surgery (87% vs 92%, p = 0.17), hospital admission due to infection (92% vs 92%, p = 0.31) or prescription of antibiotics (49% vs 50%, p = 0.56). The proportion of patients continuing second-line biologic therapy did not differ by reason for ending first-line anti-TNF (lack of response vs intolerance) or by type of first-line anti-TNF (adalimumab vs infliximab). Conclusion: Based on data from Swedish routine care, no clinically relevant differences in effectiveness or safety of second-line ustekinumab vs anti-TNF treatment were observed in patients with CD with prior exposure to anti-TNF. Background: International guidelines currently recommend laparoscopy for bilateral inguinal hernia repair (BIHR). Our study aims to evaluate the trends and factors associated with the choice of laparoscopy for BIHR in Spain. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of patients undergoing BIHR between 2016 and 2019. We used the national database of the Spanish Ministry of Health: RAE-CMBD. We performed a univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with the utilization of laparoscopy. We identified perioperative complications and the factors associated with their occurrence through multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: A total of 21,795 BIHRs were performed: 84% by open approach and 16% by laparoscopic approach. Laparoscopic approach increased from 12% in 2016 to 23% in 2019 (p < 0.001). The 40% of hospitals did not use laparoscopy, and only 8% of the hospitals performed more than 50% of their BIHRs by laparoscopy. The utilization rate of laparoscopy was not related to the number of BIHRs performed per year (p = 0.145). The main factor associated with the choice of laparoscopy in multivariable logistic regression analysis was the patient's region of residence (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.88–2.21). Other factors were age < 65 years (OR 1.65, 95% CI 1.52–1.79) and recurrent inguinal hernia (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.15–1.49). The type of approach for BIHR was not independently associated with perioperative complications. Conclusions: Despite a significant increase in recent years, laparoscopic BIHR in Spain remains low. The main factor associated with the utilization of laparoscopy was the patient's region of residence; this factor seems to be related to the presence of hospitals with a high rate of laparoscopic approaches where the patient lives. The type of approach was not independently associated with perioperative complications. More efforts are needed to increase laparoscopic use in patients with bilateral inguinal hernias. Purpose: Most previous reports on dysphagia in cancer have focused on specific cancer types, particularly head and neck cancer. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the incidence of dysphagia in patients with various cancers using a nationwide database in South Korea. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service database. Claim codes were used for the selection criteria and operational definitions. The total population data from 2010 to 2015 were extracted. The crude incidence of dysphagia was calculated per 1,000 person-years. The multivariate adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression was used to determine the effects of different cancers on the incidence of dysphagia. Results: People with cancer had a lower income and suffered from a higher risk of comorbidities compared to people without cancer. The risk of dysphagia increased in all types of cancers, particularly in the oral cavity and pharynx (hazard ratio [HR]: 20.65, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 17.73–24.06), esophagus (HR: 18.25, 95% CI: 15.66–21.26), larynx (HR: 12.87, 95% CI: 10.33–16.02), and central nervous system (HR: 12.42, 95% CI: 10.33–14.94). Conclusions: The risk of dysphagia was significantly higher in the cancer group than in the non-cancer group. As the survival of cancer patients is improving with the development of new treatments, more attention should be paid to dysphagia in the management of cancer. Adolescents with high autistic traits are at increased risk of depression. Despite the importance of seeking help for early intervention, evidence on help-seeking intentions amongst this population is scarce. Using a population-based cohort in Japan, we examined adolescents' help-seeking intentions and preferences by the level of autistic traits and tested its mediating role on the association between high autistic traits and depressive symptoms. At age 12, we measured parent-rated autistic traits using the short version of the Autism Spectrum Quotient and classified the adolescents into two groups (≥ 6 as AQhigh, < 6 as AQlow); help-seeking intentions and preferences were assessed through a depression vignette. At age 14, depressive symptoms were self-rated using the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire. Hypothesised associations between autistic traits and help-seeking intentions or depressive symptoms were tested applying multivariable regression modelling, while mediation was tested with structural equation modelling. Of the 2505 adolescent participants, 200 (8%) were classified as AQhigh. In both groups, the main source of help-seeking was their family; however, 40% of the AQhigh group reported having no help-seeking intentions compared to 27% in the AQlow. The AQhigh group was at increased risk of not having help-seeking intentions (OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.35–2.50) and higher depressive symptoms (b coefficient 1.06, 0.33–1.79). Help-seeking intentions mediated 18% of the association mentioned above. Interventions to promote help-seeking intentions among adolescents with high autistic traits could reduce their subsequent depressive symptoms. Summary: Osteoporosis was suggested to be associated with higher odds of age-related macular degeneration. However, the temporal relationship between osteoporosis and age-related macular degeneration has not been explored. This population-based longitudinal follow-up study showed an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration in both men and women with osteoporosis. Purpose: To investigate the long-term risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in patients with osteoporosis. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005, a subset of Taiwan's National Health Insurance research database. A total of 23,611 individuals aged 50 to 79 who were diagnosed with osteoporosis between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2006, were enrolled in the osteoporosis group. An exactly equal number of propensity score-matched individuals without osteoporosis comprised the comparison group. The variables used in propensity score matching included age, sex, comorbidities, and socioeconomic status. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between osteoporosis and AMD. The main outcome measure is the occurrence of newly diagnosed AMD. Results: The hazard ratio (HR) of AMD in the osteoporosis group was 1.34 times higher than in the comparison group (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.22–1.47, p < 0.05). The AMD-free survival rate of the osteoporosis group was significantly lower than that of the comparison group (p < 0.0001). Sex-stratified analysis revealed a significantly increased risk of AMD in both osteoporotic men (HR 1.45; 95% CI 1.20–1.76, p = 0.0002) and women (HR 1.31; 95% CI 1.17–1.46, p < 0.0001) compared with their non-osteoporotic counterparts. Background: Information on the association between disability and severity of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) among stroke-free individuals is limited. We aimed to assess this association in apparently healthy older adults. Methods: Following a population-based cross-sectional design, community-dwelling older adults received a brain MRI to grade WMH severity and the Functional Activities Questionnaire to assess the ability to perform activities of daily living. Demographics, clinical risk factors and other markers of cerebral small vessel disease were taken into consideration for analysis. Results: Unadjusted analysis showed a significant association between moderate-to-severe WMH and disability (p = 0.003) that was tempered by the effect of age. Causal mediation analysis showed that age took away 65.9% of the effect of WMH severity on disability. An interaction model showed that disability was higher only among subjects with moderate-to-severe WMH above the median age. This research aims to better understand the association of personality traits (PT)—Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism—with health literacy (HL) skills of adults aged 58 years and older in a nationally representative sample from Switzerland. Analyses were conducted on a subsample (n = 1546) of respondents living in Switzerland from wave 8 (2019/2020) of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). PT were assessed with the Big-Five inventory ten (BFI-10). HL was measured using the short version of the European Health Literacy Survey questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q16). We used multivariable regressions to explore how respondents' PT are independently associated with (1) the HLS-EU-Q16 and (2) seven sub-indices derived from this HL scale. Results demonstrated that even when controlling for social, regional, and health characteristics, PT were significantly associated with HL among older adults in Switzerland. More open individuals showed better HL competencies. By contrast, individuals who scored higher on neuroticism expressed more difficulties regarding concrete health-relevant tasks or situations. These findings call for public health policies targeting older adults with lower levels of openness who are less likely to engage in self-examination, and individuals with higher levels of neuroticism who tend to experience more negative emotions. Moreover, health information and communication strategies content development that accounts for different personality types and addresses the needs of individuals with low levels of openness and high neuroticism may help improve HL among older adults whose personalities may otherwise put them at a disadvantage in handling health information. Objective: This study aimed to estimate healthcare costs of diabetic foot disease (DFD) in a large population-based cohort of people with type-2 diabetes (T2D) in the Tuscany region (Italy). Data sources/study setting: Administrative healthcare data of Tuscany region, with 2018 as the base year. Study design: Retrospective study assessing a longitudinal cohort of patients with T2D. Data collection/extraction methods: Using administrative healthcare data, DFD were identified using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes. Methods: We examined the annual healthcare costs of these clinical problems in patients with T2D between 2015 and 2018; moreover, we used a generalized linear model to estimate the total healthcare costs. Principal findings: Between 2015 and 2018, patients with T2D experiencing DFD showed significantly higher average direct costs than patients with T2D without DFD (p < 0.0001). Among patients with T2D experiencing DFD, those who experienced complications either in 2015–2017 and in 2018 incurred the highest incremental costs (incremental cost of € 16,702) followed by those with complications in 2018 only (incremental cost of € 9,536) and from 2015 to 2017 (incremental cost of € 800). Conclusions: DFD significantly increase healthcare utilization and costs among patients with TD2. Healthcare costs of DFD among patients with T2D are associated with the timing and frequency of DFD. Objectives: Excessive accumulation of adipose tissue may accelerate brain aging, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Several adiposity indices were proposed to assess obesity, while their linkage with brain health in older adults remained unclear. Here we aimed to examine the associations of adiposity indices with global and regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in older adults, while considering insulin resistance. Design: This was a cross-sectional population-based study that included older adults derived from the baseline participants in the ongoing Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in rural China (MIND-China) study. Setting And Participants: The study included 103 Chinese rural-dwelling older adults (age≥60 years; 69.9% women) who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging scans. Methods: We estimated eight adiposity indices based on anthropometric measures. We automatically quantified global and regional CBF using the arterial spin labeling scans. Insulin resistance was assessed using the triglyceride-glucose index and then dichotomized into high and low levels according to the median. Data were analyzed using general linear model and voxel-wise analysis. Results: Of the eight examined adiposity indices, only higher waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and body roundness index (BRI) were associated with reduced global CBF (multivariable-adjusted β-coefficients and 95%CI: −1.76; −3.25, −0.27 and −1.77; −3.25, −0.30, respectively) and hypoperfusion in bilateral middle temporal gyri, angular gyri and superior temporal gyri, left middle cingulum and precuneus (P<0.05). There were statistical interactions of WHtR and BRI with levels of insulin resistance on CBF, such that the significant associations of higher WHtR and BRI with lower global and regional CBF existed only in people with high insulin resistance (P<0.05). Conclusion: Higher WHtR and BRI are associated with cerebral hypoperfusion in older adults, especially in people with high insulin resistance. Twin pregnancy is a risk factor for postpartum depression and anxiety. Whether this translates into a higher risk of severe maternal mental illness in the short-term or long-term is unknown. This study was a population-based retrospective cohort study, using linked health administrative databases for the entire province of Ontario, Canada. Included were primiparas aged 15–50 years with a twin vs. singleton hospital livebirth, between January 1, 2003, and March 31, 2019. Propensity-score inverse probability of treatment weights accounted for potential confounding. The primary outcome of severe mental illness comprised a composite of an emergency department visit or hospitalization for mental illness or self-injury, or death by suicide, assessed in the first year after birth, and in long-term follow-up, up to 17 years thereafter. Fifteen thousand twenty-four twin and 796,804 (15,022 weighted) singleton births were included, with a mean (IQR) duration of follow-up of 9 (5–13) years. After weighting, the mean (SD) maternal age was 31.3 (5.5) years. In the first 365 days postpartum, severe mental illness occurred at rates of 10.5 and 8.7 per 1000 person-years in twin and singleton mothers, respectively, corresponding to a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.21 (95% CI 1.07–1.47). From 366 days onward, the corresponding figures were 5.9 and 6.1 per 1000 person-years (HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.89–1.04). Individuals with a twin birth appear to experience an increased risk for severe mental illness in the first year postpartum, but not thereafter. Background: Cigarette smoking is a threat to global human health and a leading cause of the cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Importantly, sex-specific differences in smoking-induced arterial stiffness, an early key event in the development of atherosclerotic CVD, remain still elusive. Thus, this study sought out to investigate sex-specific associations between smoking and measures of arterial stiffness. Methods and results: Overall, 15,010 participants (7584 men and 7426 women aged 35–74 years) of the Gutenberg Health Study were examined at baseline during 2007–2012. Smoking status, pack-years of smoking, and years since quitting smoking were assessed by a standardized computer-assisted interview. Arterial stiffness and wave reflection were determined by stiffness index (SI) and augmentation index (AI). In the total sample, 45.8% had never smoked, 34.7% were former smokers, and 19.4% were current smokers. Median cumulative smoking exposure was 22.0 pack-years in current male smokers and 16.0 in current female smokers. In general, multivariable linear regression models adjusted for a comprehensive set of confounders revealed that smoking status, pack-years of smoking, and years since quitting smoking were dose-dependently associated with markers of arterial stiffness. In sex-specific analyses, these associations were overall more pronounced in men and SI was stronger related to the male sex, whereas differences between men and women in the case of AI appeared to be less substantial. Discussion: The present results indicate that chronic smoking is strongly and dose-dependently associated with increased arterial stiffness in a large population-based cohort regardless of sex but with a stronger association in men. Sleep problems are common in modern society and may be related to environmental chemicals. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between exposure to personal care and consumer product chemicals (PCCPCs) and sleep-related disorders. Nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used in this study (N=2415). Sleep-related variables, including sleep duration, snoring, and self-reported sleep problems, were included as outcome variables to assess sleep quality. Urinary PCCPC concentrations were used to assess the association of PCCPCs with sleep problems and adjusted for variables similar to those used in related studies. PCCPC levels were analysed as quartiles. Multivariate logistic regression and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were used to analyse the association of urinary PCCPCs with sleep problems. Nine of the 12 kinds of PCCPCs with a detection rate greater than 50% were included in our study. Specifically, the concentrations of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), methyl paraben (MP) and triclosan (TCS) were significantly related to insufficient sleep. Based on the WQS model, combined exposure to PCCPCs was also significantly related to insufficient sleep; TCS, BPA, and MP were the compounds with the greatest impact regarding combined exposure. A variety of PCCPCs were associated with insufficient sleep in participants but were not significantly associated with the other sleep problems reported in the NHANES. Summary: This population-based longitudinal follow-up study showed a protective effect of tea consumption against osteoporosis, particularly among women and middle-aged people. High tea consumption was also associated with a reduced risk of hip fracture. Introduction: To investigate the association of tea consumption with the risks of osteoporosis and hip fracture. Methods: This study used the Keelung Community-based Integrated Screening database and Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 42,742 subjects aged 45 to 74 years were enrolled. Each was classified as no tea consumption, low tea consumption, and high tea consumption, according to the results of an eating habits questionnaire. The diagnosis of osteoporosis and hip fracture was based on BMD measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and the X-ray findings. The median follow-up time was 8.5 years. Results: As compared with the no tea consumption group, the osteoporosis HRs for the low tea consumption and high tea consumption groups were 0.88 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.80–0.96) and 0.87 (95% CI 0.80–0.94), respectively. Among those participants aged 59 or below, the osteoporosis HRs for low tea consumption and high tea consumption (vs. no tea consumption) were 0.85 (95% CI 0.74–0.96) and 0.79 (95% CI 0.69–0.90). The HRs of hip fracture for the low tea consumption and high tea consumption groups (vs. no tea consumption) were 0.85 (95% CI 0.67–1.08) and 0.69 (95% CI 0.55–0.86), respectively. Conclusion: Tea consumption was linked to a lower risk of osteoporosis, particularly among women and middle-aged people. High tea consumption was also associated with a reduced risk of hip fracture. Purpose: Eating disorders (ED) and anxiety impact food choices. In addition, comorbid anxiety seems to increase ED symptoms and severity. However, the association between such comorbidity and dietary intake is unknown. This population-based, cross-sectional study aimed to assess macronutrient intake according to mental health status (i.e., no disorder, pure and comorbid anxiety and ED). Methods: The study included N = 24,771 participants (74% female, mean age = 53.2 ± 13.7 years) in the NutriNet-Santé cohort, who completed once the trait subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T; high anxiety: ≥ 40 points) between 2013 and 2016 and the SCOFF questionnaire screening for ED in 2014. The Expali algorithm was applied to categorize ED (no ED; restrictive: RS; bulimic: BL; hyperphagic: HP; other ED). Participants were divided into ten groups by crossing their anxiety status (two groups: low or high) and their ED status (five groups). Macronutrient intakes were evaluated from ≥ 3 24-h dietary records. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) and Dunnett-Hsu tests (reference = no disorder) were performed. Results: Significant differences in macronutrient intake were seen between the pure and comorbid forms, especially for RS and HP. Compared to the "no disorder" group, a significantly higher percentage of energy from carbohydrates, higher intakes of total carbohydrates, simple sugars, and plant-based protein, lower intakes of total fat, saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, and cholesterol were observed in the comorbid anxiety + RS group, but not in the pure RS group. In contrast, significantly lower intakes of added sugar and plant-based protein, and a higher intake of cholesterol were observed in the pure HP group, but not in the comorbid anxiety + HP group. For BL and other ED, similar results were observed between the pure and comorbid forms. Conclusion: This large epidemiological study provided some support for differences in macronutrient intake between individuals with pure or comorbid anxiety and ED. Differences in intake were largely dependent on ED type. Future prospective studies and studies using clinically defined anxiety and ED are needed to elucidate causality as well as potential effect modification of the observed associations. Background: Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with degenerative conditions in aging. Aims: We aimed to evaluate the associations of RDW and anemia with lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling older adults. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 5093 rural residents (age ≥ 60 years, 57.3% women) who participated in the MIND-China Study in Shandong. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. RDW was categorized according to quartiles and the lower-extremity physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Results: Multiple linear regression analyses suggested that the fourth quartile of RDW (vs. first quartile) was associated with lower SPPB summary score (β-coefficient – 0.38; 95% CI – 0.58 to – 0.18) and lower scores in balance test (– 0.09; – 0.17 to – 0.01), chair stand test (– 0.17; – 0.27 to – 0.07), and walking speed test (– 0.12; – 0.19 to − 0.05). Anemia was associated with a multiple-adjusted β-coefficient of – 0.34 (– 0.52 to – 0.16) for SPPB summary score. Stratified analysis by anemia showed that there was a linear association between RDW and SPPB in individuals without anemia but a J-shaped association in individuals with anemia. Discussion: This large-scale population-based study revealed the associations of high RDW and anemia with poor lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. These findings suggest that an elevated RDW might be a biochemical marker for poor lower-extremity physical function among older adults. Background: There is a paucity of the literature on the relationship between frailty and excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The entire community-dwelling adult population of Ontario, Canada, as of January 1st, 2018, was identified using the Cardiovascular Health in Ambulatory Care Research Team (CANHEART) cohort. Residents of long-term care facilities were excluded. Frailty was categorized through the Johns Hopkins Adjusted Clinical Groups (ACG® System) frailty indicator. Follow-up was until December 31st, 2020, with March 11th, 2020, indicating the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using multivariable Cox models with patient age as the timescale, we determined the relationship between frailty status and pandemic period on all-cause mortality. We evaluated the modifier effect of frailty using both stratified models as well as incorporating an interaction between frailty and the pandemic period. Results: We identified 11,481,391 persons in our cohort, of whom 3.2% were frail based on the ACG indicator. Crude mortality increased from 0.75 to 0.87% per 100 person years from the pre- to post-pandemic period, translating to ~ 13,800 excess deaths among the community-dwelling adult population of Ontario (HR 1.11 95% CI 1.09–1.11). Frailty was associated with a statistically significant increase in all-cause mortality (HR 3.02, 95% CI 2.99–3.06). However, all-cause mortality increased similarly during the pandemic in frail (aHR 1.13, 95% CI 1.09–1.16) and non-frail (aHR 1.15, 95% CI 1.13–1.17) persons. Background: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological morbidity. It is, however, a frequently underdiagnosed medical condition. This study was hence done to assess the occurrence and severity of RLS among participants and to study its determinants and its association with quality of sleep. This was a cross-sectional study conducted among the general population of Mangalore in July 2021. Data were collected using a Google Form. The International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group Rating Scale was used to diagnose RLS and its severity. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Results: The prevalence of RLS among the 202 participants was 24(11.9%). Among them, 5 were already diagnosed with RLS. Their mean age at onset was 40.4 ± 25.3 years. Among the rest 197 participants, 19(9.6%) were newly diagnosed with RLS. The severity of RLS was mild, moderate and severe among 7(36.8%), 9(47.4%) and 3(15.8%) participants, respectively. Five (26.3%) of the 19 newly diagnosed participants were identified as RLS sufferers. In multivariable analysis, the presence of diabetes mellitus and family history of RLS were associated with the presence of RLS among the participants. The mean Global PSQI value was 5.0 ± 3.1. Sleep latency was prolonged (p = 0.001), and sleep disturbances (p = 0.01) were higher among participants newly diagnosed with RLS (n = 19) compared to those without RLS (n = 178). Subjective sleep quality was poor (p = 0.038), and sleep disturbances (p = 0.016) were more among participants with severe degree RLS. Conclusions: The prevalence of RLS in the present study was higher than that reported in previous Indian studies. Unpleasant sensations in RLS affected sleep initiation and maintenance among the affected. Purpose: Low back pain (LBP) is the most prevalent public health problem globally, second only to headaches in the ranking of painful disorders that affect human beings. However, evidence about the profile of LBP patients is lacking in low-income countries for appropriate management approaches. This study examined the profile of individuals with LBP and factors defining chronicity of pain in Ethiopia.Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study design was used to collect data from 1812 adults (≥ 18 years) with LBP at present. Data were collected by interviewing the study participants using an instrument developed and validated in the same study population. The instrument includes socio-demographic information, health behaviours/lifestyle habits, beliefs about pain, and pain and general health-related characteristics of the participants. Data analysis was performed using R version 3.5.1. Both unconditional and conditional logistic regression models were fitted and Odds Ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were computed to identify factors significantly associated with chronicity of pain at p ≤ 0.05 significance level.Results: Negative beliefs about pain, a varying degree of pain interference with daily and social activities, complaining of pain in other anatomical sites other than the low back region, general health status rated as not excellent, depressive symptomology, and sleeping problems/insomnia were common within the profile of individuals with LBP. Age, educational level, residential setting, beliefs about pain, and depressive symptomology were found to have a statistically significant association with chronicity of pain.Conclusions: This study provides an overview of the profile of individuals with LBP and factors defining chronicity of pain, assisting clinicians to design appropriate management strategies to improve patients' outcomes. Purpose: Epidemiological studies have indicated a higher prevalence of hypothyroidism in breast cancer patients, possibly related to shared risk factors and breast cancer treatments. However, few studies have evaluated how hypothyroidism impacts survival outcomes in breast cancer patients. We aimed to determine the association between hypothyroidism and breast cancer-specific and all-cause mortality. Methods: We conducted a population-based study using the Scottish Cancer Registry to identify women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2010 and 2017. A matched comparison cohort of breast cancer-free women was also identified. Using hospital diagnoses and dispensed prescriptions for levothyroxine, we identified hypothyroidism diagnosed before and after breast cancer diagnosis and determined associations with breast cancer-specific and all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) adjusted for potential confounders. Results: A total of 33,500 breast cancer patients were identified, of which 3,802 had hypothyroidism before breast cancer diagnosis and 565 patients went on to develop hypothyroidism after. Breast cancer patients had higher rates of hypothyroidism compared with cancer-free controls (HR 1.14, 95% CI 1.01–1.30). Among breast cancer patients, we found no association between hypothyroidism (diagnosed before or after) and cancer-specific mortality (before: HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.88–1.12, after: HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.63–1.49). Similar associations were seen for all-cause mortality. Conclusion: In a large contemporary breast cancer cohort, there was little evidence that hypothyroidism, either at diagnosis or diagnosed after breast cancer, was associated with cancer-specific or all-cause mortality. The Mood Disorders Questionnaire (MDQ) is a 3-item scale that is frequently used in bipolar disorders (BD) screening and questions the symptoms of BD, its effect on functionality, and the coexistence of symptoms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of positive screening of the MDQ among general population and to investigate the associated risk factors. In this cross-sectional study, the sample was randomly selected from household data to represent the city population. A total of 432 participants were asked to fill in MDQ, CAGE (cutting down, annoyance by criticism, guilty feeling, and eye-openers) questionnaire, which consists of four clinical interview questions proven to aid in the diagnosis of alcoholism, and clinical and sociodemographic data form. The Cronbach's alpha value of our current study was 0.813 for MDQ. The prevalence of MDQ positivity was found 7.6%. The estimated prevalence rate of bipolar disorders varied between 0.3 and 13.4% according to different cut-off values. Multivariate logistic regression models showed that the presence of possible alcohol addiction, shift work history, and body mass index (BMI) were statistically significant predictors of MDQ positivity. The prevalence of MDQ positivity found is similar to studies in literature. Keeping in mind that psychometric properties of the MDQ, positive screen results should be cautiously interpreted due to the presence of other risk factors and comorbidities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To determine the distribution of corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc), Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg) and their associated factors in a geriatric population. Methods: The present cross-sectional study was performed in individuals above 60 years of age in Tehran, the capital of Iran. The sampling was performed using multi-stage random cluster sampling method. All participants underwent preliminary ocular examinations, and then imaging by Pentacam HR and IOL master 500. Measurement of IOPg, IOPcc, and corneal biomechanical indices including corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistant factor (CRF) was performed in a random sub-sample using ocular response analyzer (ORA). Results: The mean IOPg and IOPcc were 16.76 ± 4.71 mmHg and 19.05 ± 4.67 mmHg, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in both IOPg (p = 0.891) and IOPcc (p = 0.248) between males and females. Based on the multiple linear regression models, both IOPg and IOPcc showed a statistically significant direct relationship with CRF (P < 0.001) and a significant inverse relationship with CH (P < 0.001 for IOPg and IOPcc), anterior chamber angle (ACA) (p = 0.006 for IOPg and p = 0.017 for IOPcc), and spherical equivalent refractive error (p = 0.032 for IOPg and p = 0.046 for IOPcc). Conclusion: Mean IOPg and IOPcc in the present study were higher compared to most previous studies. Corneal biomechanical indices including CH and CRF, refractive error and anterior chamber angle were independent associated factors of IOPg and IOPcc in the present study. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of religiosity with blood donation in a representative/stratified sample of primary healthcare users of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Duke University Religious Index—DUREL (dimensions: organizational, non-organizational, and intrinsic religiosity). Odds ratios adjusted by sex and age were used as measures of association. A total of 1055 individuals participated (79.7% females; mean age = 40.6 years); 23.3% had previously donated blood. Most reported having a religion and grew up in a religious environment. High frequencies of religiosity were observed. Similar DUREL scores were observed among participants who donated blood and those who did not. Family members and close friends had significant influence on participants' blood donation practices. Religiosity was not directly associated with blood donation despite the high prevalence and scores of religiosity. However, possible associations between religion and blood donation should consider mediating variables in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In pre- and early perimenopausal women, prediabetes (with blood glucose ≥ 110 mg/dL) and greater insulin resistance are associated with worse trabecular bone quality (as assessed by trabecular bone score). Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with lower trabecular bone score (TBS) and fracture; less certain is whether the precursor states of prediabetes and increased insulin resistance are also related to adverse bone outcomes. We examined, in women who do not have DM, the associations of glycemic status (prediabetes vs. normal) and insulin resistance with TBS. Methods: This was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data collected from 42- to 52-year-old, pre- and perimenopausal participants in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) TBS Study. Women with prediabetes were categorized as having either high prediabetes if their fasting glucose was between 110 and 125 mg/dL or low prediabetes if their fasting glucose was between 100 and 109 mg/dL. Normoglycemia was defined as a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL. Results: In multivariable linear regression, adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, menopause transition stage, cigarette use, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, lumbar spine bone mineral density, and study site, women with high prediabetes had 0.21 (p < 0.0001) standard deviations (SD) lower TBS than those with normoglycemia. Low prediabetes was not associated with lower TBS. When HOMA-IR levels were ≥ 1.62, each doubling of HOMA-IR was associated with a 0.11 SD decrement in TBS (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Similar to diabetics, high prediabetics have lower TBS than normoglycemic individuals. Women with greater insulin resistance have lower TBS even in the absence of DM. Purpose: There is a substantial gap between people having a mental disorder and those treated for this disorder. Studies that assessed the influence of age on healthcare use for major depressive disorder (MDD) have provided inconsistent results. We aimed to assess healthcare use in terms of treatment-seeking and psychotropic medication use in four age groups of 45- to 85-year-old community dwellers meeting criteria for MDD.Methods: Data stemmed from CoLaus|PsyCoLaus, a population-based prospective cohort study. Diagnostic information on mental disorders, utilization of professional healthcare and psychotropic drugs was elicited using a semi-structured interview. Associations between age groups and healthcare use were established using logistic regression models with serial adjustments for socio-demographic and depression characteristics as well as comorbid mental disorders and cardio-metabolic features.Results: Compared to participants of the youngest age group (ages 45 to 54 years), (1) those older than 75 years were less likely to use healthcare from psychiatrists or psychologists (OR: 0.4 [95% CI 0.17-0.96]), although the frequency of using any professional health care did not vary across age groups; (2) those older than 55 years used any psychotropic medication more frequently; and (3) those aged 55-64 years used antidepressants more frequently (OR: 1.61 [95% CI 1.07-2.44]), whereas those aged 65-74 years used anxiolytics more frequently (OR: 2.30 [95% CI 1.15-4.58]).Conclusion: Age is a complex biological and social factor that influences healthcare use.
