Proteomic investigations result in high dimensional datasets, but integration or comparison of different studies is hampered by high variances due to different experimental setups. In addition, cell culture conditions can have a huge impact on the outcome. This study systematically investigates the impact of experimental parameters on the proteomic profiles of commonly used cell lines—A549, differentiated THP-1 macrophage-like cells, and NR8383—for toxicity studies. The work focuses on analyzing the influence at the proteome level of cell culture setup involving different vessels, cell passage numbers, and post-differentiation harvesting time, aiming to improve the reliability of proteomic analyses for hazard assessment. Mass-spectrometry-based proteomics was utilized for accurate protein quantification by means of a label-free approach. Our results showed that significant proteome variations occur when cells are cultivated under different setups. Further analysis of these variations revealed their association to specific cellular pathways related to protein misfolding, oxidative stress, and proteasome activity. Conversely, the influence of cell passage numbers on the proteome is minor, suggesting a reliable range for conducting reproducible biological replicates. Notable, substantial proteome alterations occur over-time post-differentiation of dTHP-1 cells, particularly impacting pathways crucial for macrophage function. This finding is key for the interpretation of experimental results. These results highlight the need for standardized culture conditions in proteomic-based evaluations of treatment effects to ensure reliable results, a prerequisite for achieving regulatory acceptance of proteomics data. Population studies have shown that the infant's microbiome and metabolome undergo significant changes in early childhood. However, no previous study has investigated how diverse these changes are across subjects and whether the subject-specific dynamics of some microbes correlate with the over-time dynamics of specific metabolites. Using mixed-effects models, and data from the ABC study, we investigated the early childhood dynamics of fecal microbiome and metabolome and identified 83 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and 753 metabolites with seemingly coordinated trajectories. Enrichment analysis of these microbes and molecules revealed eight ASV families and 23 metabolite groups involving 1032 ASV-metabolite pairs with their presence-absence changing in a coordinated fashion. Members of the Lachnospiraceae (464/1032) and metabolites related to cholestane steroids (309/1032) dominated proportional shifts within the fecal microbiome and metabolome as infants aged. Appointment scheduling (AS) plays a crucial role in outpatient clinic management. Traditional methods involve patient grouping using pre-defined rules and scheduling based on these groups. However, pre-defined rules may not adequately capture the heterogeneity in patients' service times (i.e., consultation duration). Advanced machine learning (ML) methods can address individual-level heterogeneity but pose challenges for practical scheduling. To strike a balance, we propose a data-driven AS decision support system, Cluster-Predict-Schedule (CPS), integrating both supervised and unsupervised ML for efficient patient grouping and scheduling. The novelty of CPS lies in its adaptability to service time heterogeneity through a data-driven approach, determining patient groups based on data rather than pre-defined rules. Additionally, CPS includes a generic and efficient algorithm for generating appointment templates adaptable to any number of patient groups. Our system's efficacy is demonstrated using a real-world dataset. Evaluated by the weighted sum of patient wait times, physician idle time, and overtime, CPS achieves up to 15.0% cost reduction compared to the FCFA (first-call, first-appointment) scheme and over 4.7% savings against the common New/Return classification with traditional sequencing candidate (TSC) rules. This paper presents a model that examines sports teams' strategic choices about the extent of offense/defense to adopt in competing with other teams. The mathematical formulation adopted permits the derivation of a team's optimal strategy under different game scenarios (current score and time left to play), and team characteristics (playing at home or away, and each team's quality). A novel feature of the model is that teams can choose a strategy at several moments in the game, thereby incorporating a comprehensive dynamic element. The National Hockey League is used as an application. Optimal coaching behavior is derived in this setting, and the impact of rule changes is assessed. The study found that removing the overtime period, disproportionally increasing the rewards for a win, or removing the point that is currently awarded to the team that loses the shootout at the end of overtime, would all lead to the adoption of more offensive strategies during the game. Objective: The symptoms of insomnia are defined as difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and early awakening. Although also a symptom of insomnia, nonrestorative sleep (NRS) is clearly more associated with objective indices than other insomnia symptoms. However, the link between NRS and overtime work duration is poorly understood. Methods: The results of a single year's medical examinations were investigated for 26,144 Japanese office workers who were 30 to 59 years old. NRS status and lifestyle were collected through a computer-assisted medical interview. The subjects were asked about the presence or absence of NRS and their lifestyles in the most recent two to three months. The subjects were asked about their sleep times and average overtime durations per month (< 20 h/month, ≥ 20 but < 40 h/month, ≥ 40 but < 60 h/month, and ≥ 60 h/month). The relationships between NRS and overtime work duration adjusted for sleep time were also analyzed. Results: The proportion of subjects with NRS showed a stepwise increase as overtime work hours increased. A logistic regression analysis was performed using NRS as an objective variable. The multivariate analysis demonstrated that overtime work duration (OR, 1.13; 95% CI 1.10–1.17; P < 0.001; per one-category increase) was an independent determinant of NRS. In this study, we have shown that nutrient input in aquatic ecosystems has different impacts on the various facets of phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity. We designed an experiment with eleven levels of nutrient addition replicated four times. Alpha, beta, and gamma taxonomic and functional diversity indices were calculated based on organisms' occurrences and abundances in each microcosm, among microcosms of the same treatment and for the set microcosms of a same treatment. There was an increase in species richness and a decrease in equitability along the gradient for both groups. Taxonomic beta diversity based on occurrences was positively related to nutrient gradient, but a hump-shaped relationship between nutrient enrichment and beta diversity was observed when abundance data were considered, showing greater variation in species composition at intermediate levels of nutrient. Alpha functional richness increased for both groups, whereas alpha and gamma RaoQ, and gamma functional divergence decreased, indicating that nutrient enrichment promotes functional trait richness, but also the dominance of species. At small spatial scale and at a short period of time, we showed that taxonomic and functional diversities respond in similar ways to nutrient enrichment. The evolution of citizenship norms is considered a driving force behind changing political processes in contemporary democracies. Competing expectations have emerged on this topic: a 'citizen engagement' argument anticipates an increase in norms that emphasize engaged and expressive values, while a 'democratic erosion' argument expects an increase in traditional and even authoritarian values. With a theoretical focus on individual-level citizenship norms, we analyze uniquely high-quality cross-national data on adolescents in 14 diverse countries in 1999, 2009 and 2016. We integrate recently developed innovations in latent class analysis that have not yet been implemented in applied research by using a two-step estimator for multilevel latent class models with measurement equivalence testing. The findings confirm expectations of the existence of both 'engaged' and 'duty-based' citizenship norms, but the stability in the prevalence of these norms contrasts expectations in the literature. The findings also identify additional normative types that do change in prevalence over time—namely, decreased prevalence of a 'mainstream' norm that parallels mean societal scores, along with increased prevalence of both a 'maximalist' high-scoring group and a 'subject' low-scoring group. The results regarding over-time change provide partial support for both the citizen engagement and democratic erosion arguments, and highlight the importance of robust measurement of these concepts to contribute to the debate of evolving global trends in citizenship norms. We conclude by discussing how the multilevel latent class modeling approach used in this article can be applied to related topics to better understand changing relationships between citizens and democratic systems. In modern data analysis, time is often considered just another feature. Yet time has a special role that is regularly overlooked. Procedures are usually only designed for time-independent data and are therefore often unsuitable for the temporal aspect of the data. This is especially the case for clustering algorithms. Although there are a few evolutionary approaches for time-dependent data, the evaluation of these and therefore the selection is difficult for the user. In this paper, we present a general evaluation measure that examines clusterings with respect to their temporal stability and thus provides information about the achieved quality. For this purpose, we examine the temporal stability of time series with respect to their cluster neighbors, the temporal stability of clusters with respect to their composition, and finally conclude on the temporal stability of the entire clustering. We summarise these components in a parameter-free toolkit that we call Cluster Over-Time Stability Evaluation (CLOSE). In addition to that we present a fuzzy variant which we call FCSETS (Fuzzy Clustering Stability Evaluation of Time Series). These toolkits enable a number of advanced applications. One of these is parameter selection for any type of clustering algorithm. We demonstrate parameter selection as an example and evaluate results of classical clustering algorithms against a well-known evolutionary clustering algorithm. We then introduce a method for outlier detection in time series data based on CLOSE. We demonstrate the practicality of our approaches on three real world data sets and one generated data set. Within organized dermatology, it is imperative that leaders embody a diverse group of individuals, reflective of the dermatologists they represent and the greater U.S. population. Despite women constituting more than half of the dermatologic workforce, they represent a leadership minority in dermatology society higher level positions. This gap is evident by fewer women holding presidency positions within prominent dermatological societies; however, a comprehensive comparison across multiple societies has yet to be made. Our study analyzes and compares demographic as well as academic metrics of presidents from 16 prominent dermatology societies spanning 22 years, 2000–2021. Data were collected using organization websites, which demonstrated 247 unique presidents over 22 years. Of these presidents, 175 (70.9%) were male and 72 (29.1%) were female. Surgically focused societies had 63 (87.5%) male presidents and nine (12.5%) female presidents, while clinically focused societies had 112 (64.0%) male presidents and 63 (36.0%) female presidents (P < 0.0002). The publication h-index, academic rank, chairmanship, and number of advanced degrees, and total number of years in practice prior to election did not significantly differ between male and female leaders. There was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of female presidents across all societies between 2000 and 2021 by Cochran Armitage Trend Test. However, between 2016 and 2021, 35% of presidents were female and a general trend toward more gender balance may be noticed. This equality goal should continue to be emphasized in organized medicine. Background: The role of upper airways microbiota and its association with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) development in mechanically ventilated (MV) patients is unclear. Taking advantage of data collected in a prospective study aimed to assess the composition and over-time variation of upper airway microbiota in patients MV for non-pulmonary reasons, we describe upper airway microbiota characteristics among VAP and NO-VAP patients. Methods: Exploratory analysis of data collected in a prospective observational study on patients intubated for non-pulmonary conditions. Microbiota analysis (trough 16S-rRNA gene profiling) was performed on endotracheal aspirates (at intubation, T0, and after 72 h, T3) of patients with VAP (cases cohort) and a subgroup of NO-VAP patients (control cohort, matched according to total intubation time). Results: Samples from 13 VAP patients and 22 NO-VAP matched controls were analyzed. At intubation (T0), patients with VAP revealed a significantly lower microbial complexity of the microbiota of the upper airways compared to NO-VAP controls (alpha diversity index of 84 ± 37 and 160 ± 102, in VAP and NO_VAP group, respectively, p-value < 0.012). Furthermore, an overall decrease in microbial diversity was observed in both groups at T3 as compared to T0. At T3, a loss of some genera (Prevotella 7, Fusobacterium, Neisseria, Escherichia–Shigella and Haemophilus) was found in VAP patients. In contrast, eight genera belonging to the Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Fusobacteria phyla was predominant in this group. However, it is unclear whether VAP caused dysbiosis or dysbiosis caused VAP. Conclusions: In a small sample size of intubated patients, microbial diversity at intubation was less in patients with VAP compared to patients without VAP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Worktime reduction's effect on life satisfaction is an important issue but one that has not been fully studied. This article fills this gap and uses an ordered probit model to analyse the working time reduction impact on life satisfaction in Germany by using the European Social Survey data, the mediating effect of health and cross-partner effect are also explored. A significantly negative correlation between working time and life satisfaction are revealed, showing that a short working week can improve Germans' life satisfaction. Health is confirmed to be the important intermediate variable in the 'worktime–health–life satisfaction' nexus and about 28% of the satisfaction among German people is due to the change in health explained by working hours. Further, we find that high-earners prefer to work long hours whereas low-earners tend to work less; middle-earners show no personal preferences. Cross-partner effects are confirmed, as a male's short working week can satisfy their partner, while a female's long working hours can improve their partner's life satisfaction. In light of this, working hours should be restricted to avoid unsatisfaction induced by overtime work and overtime compensation regulations should be strictly implemented, policy-makers also need to take gender differences into consideration. This study analyzes how firms and workers respond to regulations limiting the use of temporary employment. In 2007, the Korean government introduced a labor market reform that required employers to convert a worker's contract from a temporary to permanent one in order to continue to employ a worker for more than two years. From the perspective of employers, the new regulation can be thought of as a potential increase in firing costs for temporary workers after two years. Thus, employers have an incentive to improve the screening process to establish better matches and weed out bad matches prior to the increase in firing costs. From the perspective of workers, temporary workers have an incentive to provide greater effort after the policy change because the reform offers a potential path to permanent employment. My results show economically and statistically significant decreases in the probability of job separation in the first five months of tenure after the policy change, which implies that firms responded to the increased protection for temporary workers by improving their recruitment practices. However, based on observed overtime, I find no evidence supporting the view that temporary employees provided greater effort after the new regulation was put into effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we bring together two concepts that we have been developing separately over recent years, to challenge linear and simplistic notions of migrant integration, depict multi-dimensional processes of settling and changeability over time. The concept of embedding has been proposed to capture dynamism beyond the more static notion of Granovetter's embeddedness. The concept explores the contexts and contingencies of where and how migrants establish different degrees of attachment in different places and through different social relationships. Also the concept of anchoring has been developed to offer an antireductionist processual and multi-dimensional understanding of migrant adaptation and settling, highlighting the issues of security and stability. In this paper, using longitudinal research, we explore for the first time how bringing our two concepts together may offer additional insights and understandings of migrants' experiences of and responses to the uncertainties and complexities of contemporary society, exacerbated by Brexit. The Austrian government imposed multiple major lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the relevant measures and their perceptions varied over time. The aim of this study was to compare the over-time impacts of the three COVID-19 lockdowns between March 2020 and December 2021 for (capability) wellbeing and mental health in Austria. Adult Austrian residents (n = 87) completed an online survey about their experiences during three COVID-19 lockdowns, including capabilities (OxCAP-MH), depression and anxiety (HADS), and general wellbeing (WHO-5). Differences across the baseline and follow-up scores of these instruments were summarised by demographic/socioeconomic characteristics. Longitudinal comparisons of the impacts of the lockdowns were conducted using random effect models on panel data for overall instrument scores and individual capability items. The levels of (capability) wellbeing and mental health decreased for most respondents across the three lockdowns: average 2.4% reduction in OxCAP-MH scores, 18.8% and 9% increases in HADS depression and anxiety subscale scores respectively, and 19.7% reduction in WHO-5 score between the first and third lockdowns. Mental health treatment prior to the pandemic, social support and satisfaction with government measures were the most influential characteristics that determine the association with impacts of the chain of lockdowns. Our study is the first to assess the differential capability limiting aspects of lockdowns over time alongside their impacts on mental health and general wellbeing and calls for special attention for mental health patients, isolation and satisfaction with government measures. Following the death of George Floyd, there were national calls for budget reductions and reforms for police departments. The City of San Jose's Auditor's Office analyzed the police department's budget components to understand what police services were being provided. This case study examined several research questions, such as how police overtime funding is being used to deliver police services, and whether the use of overtime is the most efficient method of services delivery. Background: Although various work-related adverse events affect workers' mental health, the association between long working hours and mental disorders remains unclear. We investigated the characteristics of overtime work and work-related adverse events among all cases of compensated work-related suicide in Japan to empirically reveal the context of the serious consequences. Methods: We analysed all 167 cases of mental disorders resulting in suicide that were compensated in fiscal year 2015–2016. Hierarchical clustering was applied to the overtime working history. Work-related adverse events were also evaluated as the qualitative aspects of their jobs. Results: More than half of the cases committed suicide within a month of developing a mental disorder. The Administrative and professional or engineering workers had a higher suicide rate. The clustering analysis revealed chronic long working hours (19%), gradual increase (27%), or rapid increase (25%) in working hours before the onset of a mental disorder. A group of cases with less overwork experienced more interpersonal conflicts. Conclusion: This is the first study to employ a clustering technique to objectively reveal the actual working patterns behind suicide. The patterns of working overtime before the onset of mental disorders varied considerably among the cases. Taking the transition of working overtime into account may provide clearer insight into the relationship between long working hours and workers' mental health. These results highlight the need for countermeasures especially for causes of chronic overworking, drastic increases in working hours, and interpersonal conflicts to prevent work-related suicide. Purpose: We aimed to examine the prospective associations of monthly working hours measured in a month, the 6-month averaged hours, and the frequency of long working hours (≥ 205 h/month) during the past 6 months with health indicators. Methods: This study included 6,806 Japanese company workers (response rate = 86.6%). Data on the workers' monthly attendance during the second half of fiscal year 2016 and annual health checkups in fiscal years 2016 and 2017 were collected. We evaluated the association of the above three types of monthly working hours with subsequent health checkup data in fiscal year 2017. We adjusted for the corresponding data in fiscal year 2016. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed significant associations between monthly working hours and workers' systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), and triglyceride levels. However, the associations were not consistent between months. The average monthly working hours were significantly associated with higher LDL levels for the 220–240 h/mo group (OR: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.07–2.08) and lower triglyceride levels for the < 140 h/mo group (OR: 0.15, 95%CI: 0.03–0.77), compared to the 140–180 h/mo group. The frequency of long working hours was significantly associated with higher LDL levels. Conclusions: Working hours over several months produced various associations with health indicators compared to those measured in a single month. Our present data suggest that the effects of average or frequency of long working hours during the past 6 months are likely to appear in LDL levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Efforts to safely reduce hospital LOS while maintaining quality outcomes and patient satisfaction are paramount. The primary goal of this study was to assess trends in LOS at a high-volume quaternary care spine center. Secondary goals were to assess trends in factors most associated with prolonged LOS. Methods: This is a prospective study of all consecutive patients admitted from January 2006 to December 2019. Data included demographics, diagnostic category (degenerative, oncology, deformity, trauma, other), LOS (mean, median, interquartile range, standard deviation, defined as days from admission to discharge), and in-hospital adverse events. Results: A total of 13,493 patients were included. Overall LOS has not changed over time with an overall median of 6.3 days (p = 0.451). Median LOS significantly increased for patients treated for degenerative pathology from 2.2 days in 2006 to 3.2 days in 2019 (p = 0.019). LOS has not changed for patients treated for deformity (overall median 6.8 days, p = 0.411), oncology (overall median 11.0 days, p = 0.051), or trauma (overall median 11.8 days, p = 0.582). Emergency admissions increased 3.2%/year for degenerative pathologies (p = < 0.001). Mean age has increased from 48.4 years in 2006 to 58.1 years in 2019 (p = < 0.001). This trend was observed in the deformity, degenerative and trauma group, not for patients treated for oncological disease. More adverse events were significantly associated with increasing age. Conclusion: This is the first North American study to comprehensively analyze trends in LOS for spinal surgery overtime in an academic center. Overall, LOS has not changed from 2006–2019. Various factors that influence LOS appear to have balanced each other. It may also be explained by the changing epidemiology of both elective and emergency surgeries. Objective: Due to recent trends such as globalization and digitalization, more and more employees tend to have flexible working time arrangements, including boundaryless working hours. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of various aspects of boundaryless working hours (overtime, Sunday work, and extended work availability) with employees' state of recovery. Besides, we examined the mediating and moderating role of recovery experiences (psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery, and control) in these relationships. Methods: We used data from 8586 employees (48% women; average age of 48 years) who took part in the 2017 BAuA-Working Time Survey, a representative study of the German working population. Regression analyses were conducted to test main effects as well as mediation and moderation. Results: Overtime work, Sunday work, and extended work availability were negatively related to state of recovery. Psychological detachment mediated these relationships. Furthermore, we found that relaxation and control mediated the association between extended work availability and state of recovery. However, no relevant moderating effects were found. Conclusions: Altogether, our findings indicate that various aspects of boundaryless working hours pose a risk to employees' state of recovery and that especially psychological detachment is a potential mechanism in these relationships. In addition, the results suggest that a high level of recovery experiences cannot attenuate these negative relationships in leisure time. Accumulating evidence indicates that climate change awareness and concern has increased globally, but commentators suggest a climate change generation gap whereby younger people care more about climate change than older people. Here we use a decade of panel data from 56,513 New Zealanders to test whether belief that "Climate change is real" and "Climate change is caused by humans" increased over the 2009-2018 period; and whether changes are uniform across 12 five-year birth cohorts spanning those born from 1936 to 1995. Results confirm a generation gap in mean (intercept) climate change beliefs but not in over-time increase (slope). The generation gap occurs because older cohorts started from a lower initial belief level (circa 2009), but all age cohorts increased their belief level at a similar rate over the last decade; and these results were not qualified by respondents' gender. The findings offer hope for collective action that bridges efforts across generations. It has been suggested that younger people care more about climate change than older people. Here, the authors present ten year panel data from New Zealand and show that despite a generation gap in starting levels, climate change beliefs have increased at similar rates across ages over the 2009-2018 period. Purpose: We aimed to cross-sectionally investigate how work and sleep conditions could be associated with excessive fatigue symptoms as an early sign of Karoshi (overwork-related cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases; CCVDs). Methods: We distributed a questionnaire regarding work, sleep, and excessive fatigue symptoms to 5410 truck drivers, as the riskiest occupation for overwork-related CCVDs, and collected 1992 total samples (response rate: 36.8%). The research team collected 1564 investigation reports required for compensation for Karoshi. Of them, 190 reports listed the prodromes of Karoshi, which were used to develop the new excessive fatigue symptoms inventory. Results: One-way analyses of variance showed that the excessive fatigue symptoms differed significantly by monthly overtime hours (p < 0.001), daily working time (p < 0.001), work schedule (p = 0.025), waiting time on-site (p = 0.049), number of night shifts (p = 0.011), and sleep duration on workdays (p < 0.001). Multivariate mixed-model regression analyses revealed shorter sleep duration as the most effective parameter for predicting excessive fatigue symptoms. Multiple logistic regression analysis confirmed that the occurrences of CCVDs were significantly higher in the middle [adjusted ORs = 3.56 (1.28–9.94)] and high-score groups [3.55 (1.24–10.21)] than in the low-score group. Conclusion: The findings suggested that shorter sleep duration was associated more closely with a marked increase in fatigue, as compared with the other work and sleep factors. This paper considers a joint order acceptance and scheduling problem under a general scenario. A manufacturer receives multiple orders with a given revenue, processing time, release date, due date, deadline, and earliness and tardiness penalties. The manufacturer can be seen as a single-machine system. Due to limited capacity, the manufacturer cannot process every order and needs to determine the optimal set of accepted orders and corresponding production schedule such that the total profit is maximized. The manufacturer can extend its capacity with overtime by paying an additional cost. A time-indexed formulation is presented to model the problem. Two exact algorithms are proposed. The first algorithm, denoted by DPIA-GR, is a dynamic programming (DP)-based algorithm that starts by solving a relaxed version of the original model and successively recovers the relaxed constraint until an optimal solution to the original problem is achieved. The second algorithm, denoted by DPIA-LRGR, improves DPIA-GR by incorporating Lagrangian relaxation (LR). The subgradient method is employed to find the optimal Lagrangian multipliers. The relaxed model in DPIA-GR and the LR model in DPIA-LRGR can be represented using a weighted di-graph. Both algorithms are equivalent to finding the longest path in the graph and applying a graph reduction strategy to prevent unnecessary computational time and memory usage. A genetic algorithm (GA) is also proposed to solve large-scale versions of the problem. Numerical experiments show that both DPIA-GR and DPIA-LRGR solve the problem efficiently and outperform CPLEX and GA, but DPIA-LRGR offers better performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has created unprecedented challenges on the healthcare system. The aim of this multi-centre study was to measure the impact of COVID-19 on IR services in the UK.Material and Methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of IR practice in six UK centres during the COVID-19 pandemic was carried out. All therapeutic IR procedures were identified using the respective hospital radiology information systems and COVID-19 status found on the hospital patient record systems. The total number of therapeutic IR procedures was recorded over two time periods, 25/03/2019-21/04/2019 (control group) and 30/03/2020-26/04/2020 (COVID-19 group). The data points collected were: procedure type, aerosol-generating nature, acute or elective case, modality used, in- or out-of-hours case and whether the procedure was done at the bedside (portable).Results: A 31% decrease in overall number of IR procedures was observed during COVID-19 compared to the control group (1363 cases vs 942 cases); however, the acute work decreased by only 0.5%. An increase in out-of-hours work by 10% was observed. COVID-19 was suspected or laboratory proved in 9.9% of cases (n = 93), and 15% of total cases (n = 141) were classed as aerosol-generating procedures. A 66% rise in cholecystostomy was noted during COVID-19. Image-guided ablation, IVC filters, aortic stent grafting and visceral vascular stenting had the greatest % decreases in practice during COVID-19, with 91.7%, 83.3%, 80.8% and 80.2% decreases, respectively.Conclusion: During the global pandemic, IR has continued to provide emergency and elective treatment highlighting the adaptability of IR in supporting other specialties. For retrospective (post-mission) analysis of the work–rest schedule (WRS) of Russian ISS crewmembers, missions from 40/41 to 53/54 were grouped depending on whether there were three (ISS 40/41–49/50) or two cosmonauts (ISS 50/51–53/54). Signs of strenuous WRS were noted in 62% of mission weeks in the first group and in 94% of weeks in the second group. The cosmonauts had to work overtime irrespective of mission durations. In the first group, overtime averaged 25 min daily or 3 h weekly. In the second group, daily and weekly overtimes averaged 1 h 51 min or 13 h, respectively, which is four times longer than in the first group. Sleep hours during missions shifted clockwise and counterclockwise. The magnitude of sleep shifting varied between 30 min and 12 h. In his response, James Sullivan raises concerns that (1) the Transfer Income Model, version 3 (TRIM3) overallocates Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to lower-income households, and (2) earnings among lower-income households are underreported. Although Sullivan argues that the underreporting of earnings leads us to I overestimate i deep/extreme poverty, the bulk of his critique argues that TRIM3 leads us to I underestimate i deep/extreme poverty. We investigate I trends i in deep and extreme poverty from 1993 to 2016, whereas Meyer looked at I levels i only in 2011.[4] Moreover, we follow best practices in the international income and poverty literatures (Brady and Burton [1]; Brady et al. [2]). Given that we arrive at almost identical estimates of $2/day poverty, it is plausible that using TRIM3 makes earnings corrections redundant and less consequential than Sullivan and Meyer et al. implied. Persistently high levels of unintended fertility, combined with evidence that over- and underachieved fertility are typical and not exceptional, have prompted researchers to question the utility of fertility desires writ large. In this study, we elaborate this paradox: widespread unintendedness and meaningful, highly predictive fertility desires can and do coexist. Using data from Malawi, we demonstrate the predictive validity of numeric fertility timing desires over both four-month and one-year periods. We find that fertility timing desires are highly predictive of pregnancy and that they follow a gradient wherein the likelihood of pregnancy decreases in correspondence with desired time to next birth. This finding holds despite the simultaneous observation of high levels of unintended pregnancy in our sample. Discordance between desires and behaviors reflects constraints to achieving one's fertility and the fluidity of desires but not their irrelevance. Recent studies have shown that flexible boundaries between work and family may make employees work harder and longer. Yet most studies were not able to show whether there are differences across different types of flexible working arrangements, and whether this relationship may only hold for certain groups of workers. We examine how three different types of flexible working arrangements, that is schedule control, flexitime, and teleworking, are associated with an increase in unpaid overtime hours of workers in the UK using the Understanding Society data from 2010 to 2015 and fixed effects panel regression models. Results show that the flexible arrangements that were introduced primarily for work-life balance purposes, i.e., flexitime and teleworking, do not necessarily increase unpaid overtime hours significantly. On the other hand, workers' control over their schedule, mainly introduced as a part of high-performance strategies, leads to increased unpaid overtime hours. This is especially true for professional men, and women without children, especially those working full-time, and surprisingly part-time working mothers. The results of this study point to the importance of distinguishing between different groups of workers as well as between different types of arrangements when examining outcomes of flexible working. Furthermore, the results of the study contribute to the argument that performance enhancing flexible working arrangements can potentially exacerbate gender inequalities in the labour market by enabling men to commit more time to their jobs, while for women, especially full-time working mothers, this may be less possible. The present study investigates the effects of flexible working-time arrangements on cognitive work-to-home spillover for women and men in Germany. It analyzes (1) how schedule control, i.e. flexitime and working-time autonomy, and the lack of control, i.e. fixed schedules and employer-oriented flexible schedules, are related to work-to-home spillover and (2) whether these relationships are mediated by job pressure and overtime hours. The multivariate analyses based on the German Socio-Economic Panel Study in 2011 and 2012 show that employees have the most spillover with working-time autonomy and employer-oriented schedules and the least with flexitime and fixed schedules. Working-time autonomy is related to a higher cognitive work-to-home spillover, but only for men, and mainly due to overtime hours. Working-time unpredictability and unreliability seem to be reasons for higher spillover with employer-oriented schedules. This, however, is the case mostly for women, i.e., only women are likely to experience cognitive spillover with employer-oriented flexible schedules—above and beyond job pressure and overtime hours. Moreover, women, but not men, seem to suffer less with flexitime. Introduction: Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a promising bariatric treatment. Gastric volume reduction and delayed gastric emptying are the probable mechanisms driving weight loss. However, there are concerns regarding the overtime ESG effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between endoscopic gastroplasty integrity overtime and weight loss.Patients and Methods: Patients undergoing follow-up endoscopy (6 and 12 months) after ESG were included. ESG were classified in three groups according to endoscopic appearance: open when all the stiches were loose; partially intact if at least one stitch was loose; intact if all the stitches were present and tight. Initial BMI, excess weight loss (%EWL) and total weight loss (%TWL) at 6 and 12 months were assessed against gastroplasty endoscopic appearance.Results: From October 2016 to April 2019, 133 patients underwent ESG, 87 (65.4%) had a follow-up EGD at 6 months. ESG was open in six cases (6.9%), partially intact in 38 (43.7%) and intact in 43 (49.4%). The overall %EWL and %TWL was 34.5 ± 19.8 and 13.2 ± 7.4, respectively; 25.7 ± 26.9 and 11.8 ± 11.8 for the open group, 30.8 ± 20.1 and 12.4 ± 7.8 for the partially intact group; 39.1 ± 19.7 and 14.0 ± 6.4 for the intact gastroplasty. Forty-one patients underwent a 12 months endoscopy: 10 (24.4%) had an intact ESG, 24 (58.5%) had a partially intact gastroplasty, and in 7 (17.0%) cases the sutures were lost. Overall %EWL and %TWL at 12 months was 34.3 ± 21.9 and 13.1 ± 8.1: 19.3 ± 13.4 and 8.9 ± 6.1 for the open group; 36.0 ± 24.2 and 13.1 ± 8.9 for the partially intact group; 40.3 ± 17.3 and 17.2 ± 5.4 for the intact group. ESG appearance correlated with preoperative BMI (r 0.34; p 0.001) and %EWL at 6 months (r 0.22; p 0.035) and 12 months (r 0.29; p 0.065).Conclusion: This preliminary work shows that weight loss correlates with ESG endoscopic appearance over time. This paper attempts to compare the performance between a single-stage appointment scheduling system and two-stage appointment scheduling system. For this purpose, a queuing model is firstly formulated with the objective of maximizing the weighted hospitals benefit minus the cost of patient waiting and doctor overtime, for a two-stage appointment scheduling system considering no-shows. To facilitate the comparison, we can alter the number of diagnosis stages by adjusting the probabilities that patients need to do further examinations, e.g., X-rays or blood tests. The single-stage queuing model assumes that all patients will finish their treatment after their first diagnosis, and other assumptions are the same as that in a two-stage appointment scheduling system. The performances of two-stage appointment scheduling systems varying with no-show probabilities and probabilities that patients have a second-stage diagnosis are presented. Experimental results indicate that the optimal number of patients needs to be more than the capacity of doctors in the first few slots, and less than those in the last few slots. We need to weigh the probability of no-shows and the probability of doing further examinations (second-stage) when determining the total number of patients to be scheduled. Under a higher no-show probability, arranging more patients than the workload reduces the waste of doctors capacity; and on the contrary, under a higher probability of doing examinations, arranging fewer patients than the workload can reduce system congestion. The multi-trip time-dependent vehicle routing problem with soft time windows and overtime constraints (MT-TDVRPSTW-OT) is considered in this paper. The modified hierarchical multi-objective formulation and the equivalent single-objective formulation are proposed. The iterative multi-trip tour construction and improvement (IMTTCI) procedure and the single-trip tour counterpart procedure with post-processing greedy heuristic (ISTTCI-GH) are proposed to solve the problem. These procedures are based on the ruin and recreate principle, and consider trade-offs among cost components (vehicle usage, number of early/late soft time window occurrences, transport distance, transport time, overtime and early/late soft time window penalty costs) in the search process. From the computational experiment, the IMTTCI procedure outperforms the existing efficient insertion heuristic with 42.09% improvement in number of vehicles and 24.30% improvement in travel time for the constant-speed multi-trip vehicle routing problem with hard time windows and shift time limits, a special case of MT-TDVRPSTW-OT problem, on all problem instances. For the MT-TDVRPSTW-OT problem, the ISTTCI-GH and the IMTTCI outperform the ISTTCI on all problem groups by 43.21% and 69.44% in the number of vehicles (the primary objective), respectively. The IMTTCI outperforms the ISTTCI-GH in number of vehicles by 51.07%, but takes 42.83% longer CPU time than the ISTTCI-GH. The performance of IMTTCI in terms of the primary objective improves with the increase of mean speed as well as the increase of time window width and planning horizon across all customer configuration types, tighter/looser time windows, shorter/longer planning horizon and various time-dependent travel speed profiles. The sensitivity analysis of different problem parameters is performed. The complexity analysis of the proposed procedures shows that the proposed procedures are solvable in polynomial time, and from the computational results the relationships between the CPU time and problem size confirm this. For the MT-VRPSTW-OT, a mixed integer program and the special case of MT-TDVRPSTW-OT, on 12-customer instances, the proposed IMTTCI algorithm yields the average optimality gap of 1.35% with the average CPU time of 0.66 seconds, whereas the GAMS/CPLEX solver yields the average optimality gap of 0.83% with the average CPU time of 256.39 seconds. In this paper we propose a heuristic approach that computes the order in which patients will be treated in an ambulatory chemotherapy center. Each patient follows an individual treatment plan that fixes dates for series of drug injections separated by recovery periods. The daily care process has three steps: consultation with the oncologist, drug preparation in the pharmacy and drug injection in medical beds. The facility closes after the last injection. As drug injection varying considerably in duration—from 15 min to 6 h—bad schedules lead to excessive overtime. In addition, after the consultation the oncologist may decide to cancel the injection because of a weak patient's health condition. In the current setting of the chemotherapy facility we work with, First Come First Served policy controls the care process. In this study, we propose to compute a common priority list of patients for consultation and injection phases. A unique list of patients is a simple tool used by nurses to manage the flow of patients and to react to uncertain events. A GRASP algorithm is developed to compute optimized list of patients in few seconds as the operating planning context requires. Two objectives are considered; the closing time and the overworking time of the facility. Numerical experiments show that our GRASP is able to quickly reach near optimal solutions and that list of patients policy performance is comparable to more complex scheduling policies. Drawing on the perceived work-family fit and balance perspective, this study investigates demands and resources as antecedents of work-life balance (WLB) across four countries (New Zealand, France, Italy and Spain), so as to provide empirical cross-national evidence. Using structural equation modelling analysis on a sample of 870 full time employees, we found that work demands, hours worked and family demands were negatively related to WLB, while job autonomy and supervisor support were positively related to WLB. We also found evidence that resources (job autonomy and supervisor support) moderated the relationships between demands and work-life balance, with high resources consistently buffering any detrimental influence of demands on WLB. Furthermore, our study identified additional predictors of WLB that were unique to some national contexts. For example, in France and Italy, overtime hours worked were negatively associated with WLB, while parental status was positively associated with WLB. Despite its significant policy implications, little is known about the impact working hours have on how often workers visit their elderly parents. Evidence is particularly lacking on men's overtime work and workers in Asia. We examine the causal impact of male workers' working times on parental visits, using a natural experiment to eliminate potential endogeneity bias. In 2004, the Korean government began reducing its legal workweek from 44 to 40 h, gradually expanding it from larger to smaller establishments by 2011. Using annual longitudinal data from the 2005 to 2014 Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (N = 7005 person-waves), we estimated an instrumental variable (IV) fixed-effects (FE) regression model. Our IV was an indicator variable of whether an individual full-time worker's legal workweek was reduced to 40 h in a given year. The results showed that working one additional hour a week lowered the frequency of visits by 6.5% (95% confidence interval [− 13.0%, 0.0%]), which was not apparent in a FE model without the IV. Working long hours has implications for workers' interactions with their elderly parents, and the failure to consider endogeneity in actual working hours may understate the negative effect. Reducing work hours may serve as an effective policy intervention for improving the well-being of older adults in rapidly aging Asian countries in a work-oriented and family-centered culture. We also highlight the need for further attention to men's work hours, which are often considered much less important than women's work status in population research on intergenerational support. We consider a novel generalization of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP). Unlike many established approaches for the RCPSP that aim to minimize the makespan of the project for given static capacity constraints, we consider the important real-life aspect that capacity constraints can often be systematically modified by temporarily assigning costly additional production resources or using overtime. We, furthermore, assume that the revenue of the project decreases as its makespan increases and try to find a schedule with a profit-maximizing makespan. Like the RCPSP, the problem is NP-hard, but unlike the RCPSP, it turns out that an optimal schedule does not have to be among the set of so-called active schedules. Scheduling such a project is a formidable task, both from a practical and a theoretical perspective. We develop, describe, and evaluate alternative solution encodings and schedule decoding mechanisms to solve this problem within a genetic algorithm framework and we compare the solutions obtained to both optimal reference values and the results of a commercial local search solver called LocalSolver. Timely completion has been one of the most important concern due to its impact on both owner and contractor. When schedule is behind, one of most widely used schedule acceleration methods is working longer time: overtime. Overtime practice is one of key management decision because it may have a negative impact on labor productivity. Since overtime is the most widely used and numerous studies concluded that excessive amounts of overtime work could serious negative impact on labor productivity, quantification of the effect of overtime on labor productivity has been discussed in a number of papers. However, it was found that most studies reviewed in this paper have pitfalls. Most of them are out of date, based on a small sample size, and largely developed from questionable or unknown sources. Very little is known about how and from where the data were collected. Where the data source is known, little is known about other pertinent information, such as the characteristics of the project, work environments, quality of management and supervision, type of work, and trades involved. These information should be clearly provided to the users, who considers overtime to speed up the work, to see whether the result of the previous studies can be applied to the work he/she is currently doing. At the same time, for the researcher, this study will be able to guide what characteristics should be considered when he/she want to quantify the effect of overtime on construction labor productivity so that practitioners will not misuse the result of studies. Asian workplaces are often characterized by cultures that require more overtime than other cultures. Although predictors for overtime work have been rigorously studied, it is still meaningful to investigate specific aspects of Eastern cultural values that stem from Confucian ethics and may influence overtime work among Asian employees. We suggest that four major Confucian orientations are positively associated with employees' affective and normative motives, which in turn affect working overtime. This article extends management literature on the subjects of cultural ethics and workaholism. It also suggests how Eastern cultural values lead to working overtime. We hope that our research effort on Confucian cultural value and its associations with other managerial outcomes and theories is a small cornerstone that allows management researchers to explore interesting and meaningful ways to apply Confucian culture and orientations in the workplace. Purpose: Few studies have investigated the impact of psychosocial factors on overwork and employee well-being while taking into account the complex relationships between such factors and the effect of workplace. The present study aimed to examine the association between psychosocial factors of overtime work and work-nonwork balance using a multilevel structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. Methods: A survey was conducted among nurses working in three hospitals ( n = 603) in Japan. After confirming the constructs of the factors by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), a multilevel SEM was conducted to investigate the direct and indirect effects of involuntary and voluntary overtime work on work-nonwork balance at both individual and workplace levels. Results: Both involuntary and voluntary overtime work factors were further differentiated into two factors (four factors in total). Involuntary overtime work directly decreased work-nonwork balance on both levels; voluntary overtime work had a direct positive effect. However, voluntary overtime work had a negative indirect effect on work-nonwork balance satisfaction. Conclusions: The use of multilevel SEM techniques to evaluate the association of clinical factors with work-nonwork balance demonstrated that involuntary overtime work has a negative effect on work-nonwork balance and voluntary overtime work had a positive direct effect but a negative indirect effect. Operating room (OR) allocation and planning is one of the most important strategic decisions that OR managers face. The number of ORs that a hospital opens depends on the number of blocks that are allocated to the surgical groups, services, or individual surgeons, combined with the amount of open posting time (i.e., first come, first serve posting) that the hospital wants to provide. By allocating too few ORs, a hospital may turn away surgery demand whereas opening too many ORs could prove to be a costly decision. The traditional method of determining block frequency and size considers the average historical surgery demand for each group. However, given that there are penalties to the system for having too much or too little OR time allocated to a group, demand variability should play a role in determining the real OR requirement. In this paper we present an algorithm that allocates block time based on this demand variability, specifically accounting for both over-utilized time (time used beyond the block) and under-utilized time (time unused within the block). This algorithm provides a solution to the situation in which total caseload demand can be accommodated by the total OR resource set, in other words not in a capacity-constrained situation. We have found this scenario to be common among several regional healthcare providers with large OR suites and excess capacity. This algorithm could be used to adjust existing blocks or to assign new blocks to surgeons that did not previously have a block. We also have studied the effect of turnover time on the number of ORs that needs to be allocated. Numerical experiments based on real data from a large health-care provider indicate the opportunity to achieve over 2,900 hours of OR time savings through improved block allocations. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the buffering effects of job resources, utilizing the job demands-control (or demand-control-support) and effort-reward imbalance models (i.e., job control, workplace social support, and extrinsic reward), on the association of overtime work hours with psychological distress in Japanese employees. Methods: A total of 1,198 participants (valid response rate = 93.7 %) from five branches of a manufacturing company in Japan completed a self-administered questionnaire comprising the scales assessing job resources, psychological distress, and demographic characteristics. We obtained the information on working hours in the most recent month from the personnel records of the surveyed company. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted. In a series of analyses, interaction term of overtime work hours with each job resource was included in the model. Results: Significant interaction effect of overtime work hours with job control was observed. Among the low job control group, the long overtime (80 h or more) subgroup had a significantly higher prevalence odds ratio of psychological distress compared to the short overtime (44 h or less) subgroup. No significant association of overtime work hours with psychological distress was found among the high job control group. On the other hand, there was no significant interaction effect of overtime work hours with workplace social support or extrinsic reward. Textile is one of the largest export and source of foreign exchange in Pakistan. For the last two decades, Textile sector is serving as the backbone for Pakistan economy. Several foreign retailers including Target, Jessie Penny, Wal-Mart, and Kohl's are outsourcing textile and garments from Pakistan. Along with the quality, these retailers are highly concerned with the ethical and social issues of their suppliers, including child labor, forced labor, compensation, working hours and environment health, and safety. My current study is an applied research, based on the problem, regarding the working hours and its proper management in textile factories, mismanagement of which lead to serious issues during social and ethical standard audits. Repetition of which may consequent in termination of business with suppliers and factories. The research hypothesis is that working off the clock will lead to overtime premium not paid and double book record keeping. As far as ethical and social compliance (SC) is concerned both overtime premiums not paid and double book records are critical issues during SC audit. A sample of 40 suppliers (factories SC audit reports) of Pakistan was randomly selected working with foreign buyers. Secondary data were used to verify the findings based on Audits finding conducted by different third party during a period of 2 years, i.e. Feb., 2010 to Jan., 2012. The results and research findings reflect that during the last 2 years (Nov., 2010 to Oct., 2012) out of 40 factories audit reports 25 factories (62.5 %) were found having working off the clock that also lead to overtime premium not paid. However, double book records were not witnessed in all 40 factories SC audit reports as parallel (falsified) records were not maintained by any factories. The above findings will help the suppliers, factories, and buyers to develop a proactive approach (on buyers end) and proper production planning (on suppliers and factories end) to avoid critical issues and smooth business activities. This paper presents a new model and solution methodology for the problem faced by companies that provide rehabilitative services to clinic and home-bound patients. Given a set of multi-skilled therapists and a group of geographically dispersed patients, the objective is to construct weekly tours for the therapists that minimize the travel, treatment, and administrative costs while ensuring that all patients are seen within their time windows and that a host of labor laws and contractual agreements are observed. The problem is complicated by three factors that prevent a daily decomposition: (i) overtime rates kick in only after 40 regular hours are worked during the week, (ii) new patients must be seen by a licensed therapist on their first visit, and (iii) for some patients only the frequency and not the actual days on which they are to be seen is specified. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program but after repeated attempts to solve small instances with commercial software failed, we developed an adaptive sequential greedy randomized adaptive search procedure. The phase I logic of the procedure builds one daily schedule at a time for each therapist until all patients are routed. In phase II, several neighborhoods are explored to arrive at a local optimum. Extensive testing with both real data provided by a U.S. rehab company and datasets derived from them demonstrated the value of the purposed procedure with respect to current practice. In the service industry, workers perform work shifts and are assigned to interruptible activities and uninterruptible tasks during their shifts. The work shifts of regular employees are often established several weeks in advance of the operations when the activity and task demands are still uncertain. Just a few days before the operations when these demands are unveiled with more certainty, the planned schedules can be slightly modified and on-call temporary employees can be scheduled to satisfy the demands as best as possible. As acceptable modifications, extending the planned shifts and moving workers' meal breaks are considered. In this paper, we are interested in the scheduling problem encountered in this second step, which also involves assigning activities and tasks to the scheduled work shifts. To produce good-quality solutions in fast computational times for large-sized instances, we develop a two-phase heuristic. In the first phase, an approximate mixed-integer programming model is used to suggest temporary shifts and extensions to regular shifts and to schedule and assign tasks. In the second phase, a column-generation heuristic embedded in a rolling horizon procedure determines the final shifts and assigns activities to them. Computational results obtained on randomly generated instances are reported to evaluate the validity of the proposed solution method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
