Introduction: Although neuromuscular function varies significantly between strength and endurance-trained adult athletes, it has yet to be ascertained whether such differences manifest by early adolescence. The aim of the present study was to compare knee extensor neuromuscular characteristics between adolescent athletes who are representative of strength (wrestling) or endurance (triathlon) sports. Methods: Twenty-three triathletes (TRI), 12 wrestlers (WRE) and 12 untrained (CON) male adolescents aged 13 to 15 years participated in the present study. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) knee extensor (KE) torque was measured, and 100-Hz magnetic doublets were delivered to the femoral nerve during and after KE MVIC to quantify the voluntary activation level (%VA). The doublet peak torque (T100Hz) and normalized vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) EMG (EMG/M-wave) activities were quantified. VL and RF muscle architecture was also assessed at rest using ultrasound. Results: Absolute and relative (to body mass) KE MVIC torques were significantly higher in WRE than TRI and CON (p < 0.05), but comparable between TRI and CON. No significant differences were observed between groups for %VA, T100Hz or either VL or RF muscle thickness. However, VL EMG/M-wave was higher, RF fascicle length longer, and pennation angle smaller in WRE than TRI and CON (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: The wrestlers were stronger than triathletes and controls, potentially as a result of muscle architectural differences and a greater neural activation. Neuromuscular differences can already be detected by early adolescence in males between predominantly endurance and strength sports, which may result from selection bias and/or physical training. Purpose: In the present study, we examined how a 4-week intervention of maximal intended velocity (MIVRT) and controlled velocity resistance training (CRT)-induced task-specific responses in expert individuals.Twenty elite athletes were randomly assigned to either a MIVRT (n = 10) or CRT (n = 10) group, both following the same volume–load training based on the back-squat three times a week but with different intentions in moving load (force–exertion speed). We assessed one-repetition maximum (1RM), mean propulsive velocity (MPV), and mean propulsive power (MPP) using a progressive-loading test before and after the intervention. A linear position transducer was used to monitor propulsive velocity in training and testing sessions.Both groups significantly increased their 1RM (CRT: + 12.3%, p < 0.001, d = 0.39; MIVRT: + 12.5%, p < 0.001, d = 0.45). Only the MIVRT group showed a significant improvement in MPV (p < 0.01) across different stepping loads, while both groups improved in MPP (MIVRT: + 22.4%, p < 0.001, d = 0.54; CRT: + 8.1%, p = 0.04, d = 0.17).MIVRT induced significant adaptations in MPV and MPP at various loads (%1RM), underlining its specificity in targeting these parameters. Despite similar enhancements in 1RM, the distinct training protocols suggest that strength gains may stem from either maximal intent in moving loads or longer times under tension. Vibratory stimuli are thought to have the potential to promote neural and/or muscular (re)conditioning. This has been well described for whole-body vibration (WBV), which is commonly used as a training method to improve strength and/or functional abilities. Yet, this technique may present some limitations, especially in clinical settings where patients are unable to maintain an active position during the vibration exposure. Thus, a local vibration (LV) technique, which consists of applying portable vibrators directly over the tendon or muscle belly without active contribution from the participant, may present an alternative to WBV. The purpose of this narrative review is (1) to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature related to the acute and chronic neuromuscular changes associated with LV, and (2) to show that LV training may be an innovative and efficient alternative method to the 'classic' training programs, including in the context of muscle deconditioning prevention or rehabilitation. An acute LV application (one bout of 20-60 min) may be considered as a significant neuromuscular workload, as demonstrated by an impairment of force generating capacity and LV-induced neural changes. Accordingly, it has been reported that a training period of LV is efficient in improving muscular performance over a wide range of training (duration, number of session) and vibration (frequency, amplitude, site of application) parameters. The functional improvements are principally triggered by adaptations within the central nervous system. A model illustrating the current research on LV-induced adaptations is provided. Purpose: Whilst skeletal muscle hypertrophy is considered an important adaptation to resistance training (RT), it has not previously been found to explain the inter-individual changes in strength after RT. This study investigated the contribution of hypertrophy to individual gains in isometric, isoinertial and explosive strength after 12 weeks of elbow flexor RT. Methods: Thirty-three previously untrained, healthy men (18-30 years) completed an initial 3-week period of elbow flexor RT (to facilitate neurological responses) followed by 6-week no training, and then 12-week elbow flexor RT. Unilateral elbow flexor muscle strength [isometric maximum voluntary force (iMVF), single repetition maximum (1-RM) and explosive force], muscle volume ( V), muscle fascicle pennation angle ( θ) and normalized agonist, antagonist and stabilizer sEMG were assessed pre and post 12-week RT. Results: Percentage gains in V correlated with percentage changes in iMVF ( r = 0.527; P = 0.002) and 1-RM ( r = 0.482; P = 0.005) but not in explosive force ( r ≤ 0.243; P ≥ 0.175). Percentage changes in iMVF, 1-RM, and explosive force did not correlate with percentage changes in agonist, antagonist or stabilizer sEMG (all P > 0.05). Percentage gains in θ inversely correlated with percentage changes in normalized explosive force at 150 ms after force onset ( r = 0.362; P = 0.038). Conclusions: We have shown for the first time that muscle hypertrophy explains a significant proportion of the inter-individual variability in isometric and isoinertial strength gains following 12-week elbow flexor RT in healthy young men.
