Combining a rational design strategy with a simple synthetic method to produce an eco-friendly material presents a unique challenge in photocatalysis technology. This work reports the successful synthesis of a heteroanionic titanium oxycarbide photocatalyst—TiO0.25C0.75 (TiOC) via a solid-state reaction and employed for the decomposition of Congo red (CR) and H2O2 generation from water under visible light radiation. Initially, TiOC demonstrated a moderate CR degradation efficiency of 54% (1 g/L) in 120 min and evolved a minimal amount of H2O2 after 90 min (2 mmol) and 120 min (10 mmol) of light exposure. This clearly indicates that the localization of hybridization of O-2p and C-2p orbitals and a more positive conduction band edge (CB) of TiOC lead to reduced carrier mobility and, consequently, high recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Therefore, sacrificial reagents such as H2O2 and isopropyl alcohol (ISA) were employed to improve CR removal and H2O2 evolution rate, resulting in 70% and 21.5 mmol (120 min), respectively. We report a facile one-pot aqueous-phase synthesis of PdAu bimetallic nanoparticles with different Pd/Au ratio. The synthesis was conducted by co-reduction of Pd and Au precursor using ascorbic acid as a reducing agent and in the presence of polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH). By high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) analyses, we found that the synthesized nanoparticles had an onion-like core/shell/shell/shell structure with Au-rich core, Pd-rich shell, Au-rich shell, and Pd shell, respectively. Objective: To identify and characterize a novel bacterial pyranose 2-oxidase (P2Ox) and investigate its potential use in lignin degradation applications.Results: A new bacterial P2Ox (PaP2Ox) enzyme was identified in the lignocellulolytic bacterium Pantoea ananatis Sd-1. The PaP2Ox open reading frame was cloned, and the encoded protein was heterologously expressed in an Escherichia coli expression system. Unlike another reported bacterial P2Ox enzyme, the purified PaP2Ox exhibits a homotetrameric spatial conformation that is similar to fungal P2Oxs, with each subunit having a molecular mass of 65 kDa. The recombinant PaP2Ox exhibits maximum activity at 50 °C and pH 6.5 with d-glucose as its preferred substrate. In addition, this enzyme was shown to work in combination with bacterial laccase in lignin degradation.Conclusions: The bacterial enzyme PaP2Ox has potential use in ligninolytic systems and shows promising value in industrial biotechnological applications. Formation rates of hydrogen peroxide and electrode erosion rates for a range of different electrode materials were determined in a gas–liquid pulsed electrical discharge reactor with a high voltage electrode needle in the liquid and a ground electrode suspended in the gas over the liquid. It was found that the H2O2 formation rates and efficiencies did not depend on the electrode material. Electrode erosion from lowest to highest followed the series: nickel chromium, thoriated tungsten, diamond-coated tungsten, stainless steel, tungsten carbide and tungsten copper alloy. Smooth crater-like morphology was found for nickel chromium, titanium and tungsten carbide and a much finer surface structure with small protrusions for the tungsten, tungsten copper and the copper. Doubling the electrode diameter lead to an increase in the H2O2 formation per eroded length by a factor of three but it also decreased the energy efficiency yield of H2O2 by more than 20%.
