The exaggerated grain growth, anisotropic crystallite morphology, and thermal expansion are the main reasons for the microcracking of sintered TiB2, wherein grain coarsening and anisotropic crystallite morphology are believed to be controlled by the surface stabilities of TiB2. To deeply understand the grain growth mechanism, the anisotropic stability and bonding features of TiB2 surfaces, including $\left( {11\bar 20} \right)$, two types of (0001), and three types of $\left( {10\bar 10} \right)$, are investigated by first-principles calculations. By employing the two-region modeling method, surface energies are calculated and the $\left( {11\bar 20} \right)$ surface is found to be more stable than (0001) and $\left( {10\bar 10} \right)$ surfaces. Hexagonal plate-like grain morphology is predicted. The different bonding conditions of surface Ti and B atoms contribute to the difference of surface structure relaxation between surfaces with Ti- and B-termination, which lead the B-terminated ones to be more stable. It is also found that the surface energies of TiB2 are much higher than those of ZrB2 with a similar structure, which may be responsible for the easy coarsening of TiB2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel porous Yb3Al5O12 ceramics are successfully fabricated via a green and simple foam-gelcasting approach. Using a nontoxic water-soluble copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride (Isobam), together with a surfactant EMAL TD (Surf-E), 50 vol% solid loading Yb3Al5O12 aqueous ceramic slurries are prepared. Thanks to the small contents of organic additives (0.4 wt% Isobam and 1 vol% Surf-E) added, low linear shrinkage (∼13.9%), and mass loss (∼2.21 wt%) are obtained after pressureless sintering of gelcasted green body at 1600 °C for 4 h under an air atmosphere. Furthermore, porous Yb3Al5O12 ceramics with controlled porosity and spherical-like cells possess excellent structural and shape stability. The flexural strength and compressive strength of the as-prepared porous Yb3Al5O12 ceramics with a relative density of 20% remain as high as 6.3 and 19.7 MPa, respectively, and the gas permeability can be tuned between 4.3 × 10−13 and 7.8 × 10−11 m2 with exponentially increasing porosity from 58% to 84%. Objective and design: Asthma is thought to result from the generation of T helper type 2 (Th2) responses, leading to bronchial inflammation. Interleukin (IL)-35 is a recently described member of IL-12 cytokine family that plays a critical role in influencing Th cell differentiation and inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of adenovirus expressing IL-35 (AdIL-35) on allergic airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and inflammation in a mouse model of asthma. Methods: BALB/c mice were subjected to an established model of allergic airway disease. AdIL-35 was administered intranasally and the effect of IL-35 on Th2 responses, pulmonary inflammation, goblet cell metaplasia, and AHR were assessed. Results: Transfer of AdIL-35 significantly reduced the severity of AHR and numbers of inflammatory cells and levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-17 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, compared with administration of a control virus. Moreover, AdIL-35 elevated the numbers of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells in the lungs. Histological analysis showed that AdIL-35 inhibited allergic lung tissue inflammation and mucus hypersecretion. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that adenovirus-mediated delivery of interleukin-35 gene can mitigate allergic airway inflammation in experimental asthma and suggest that IL-35 may offer a novel therapeutic approach to treat allergic asthma. In this article, a comprehensive investigation on the thermal properties of Yb3Al5O12 is conducted, including Debye temperature, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity. The calculated Debye temperature of Yb3Al5O12 from the measured elastic properties is 625 K. The linear and volumetric thermal expansions of Yb3Al5O12 from 298 to 1273 K are (7.83 ± 0.14) × 10−6 and (23.74 ± 0.42) × 10−6 K−1, respectively. The linear TEC of the polycrystalline bulk Yb3Al5O12 determined by dilatometer is (8.22 ± 0.3) × 10−6 K−1. The measured thermal conductivities of Yb3Al5O12 are 4.67 and 2.05 W (m K)−1, respectively, at 300 and 1400 K. The estimated minimum thermal conductivity, κmin, is 1.22 W (m K)−1. The high temperature thermal conductivity is close to the evaluated κmin, which is lower than most commonly used thermal barrier coating (TBC) material such as Y2O3-stabilized-ZrO2 (YSZ). Ytterbium monosilicate (Yb2SiO5) is a promising candidate for environmental barrier coating. However, its mechanical and thermal properties are not well understood. In this work, the structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of Yb2SiO5 are studied by combining density functional theory and chemical bond theory calculations. Based on the calculated equilibrium crystal structure, heterogeneous bonding nature and distortion of the structure are revealed. Meanwhile, the full set of elastic constants, polycrystalline mechanical properties, and elastic anisotropy of Yb2SiO5 are presented. In addition, the minimum thermal conductivity of Yb2SiO5 was determined to be 0.74 W m−1 K−1. Titanium carbide (TiC) twins are believed to be extremely unstable because of their high twin boundary energy. Here, we report that TiC twins are always presented in platelets with dimensions of 2–3 μm in length and less than 300 nm in width. In-depth microstructural characterizations by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that Al atoms at the twin boundary play a decisive role in stabilizing TiC twins. With different amounts of Al, perfect and defective TiC twins are formed. For perfect twins, three types of twin boundaries can be formed depending on the amount of remaining Al at the twin boundary. With inadequate Al, the TiC twins become defective with certain degrees of deviation from the perfect twin orientation. Based on a detailed analysis of the microstructure of the twin boundaries, a mechanism for the formation and stabilization of TiC twins is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We performed density-functional calculations of oxygen incorporation and diffusion in layered Ti2AlC for a range of intrinsic- and impurity-element chemical potentials. In view of the thermal equilibrium coexistence between oxygen-dissolved Ti2AlC and the oxide scale, a thermodynamic scheme is presented that allows the comparison of the relative stability of oxygen defects in different exterior environments. The calculations show that the oxygen atom favors substitution on carbon lattice sites (OC) under oxygen-lean conditions and high temperatures, whereas the occurrence of an oxygen interstitial in the aluminum atomic layer (IO-tri) becomes more preferential in an oxygen-rich atmosphere and low temperatures. Interstitial oxygen (IO-tri) diffusion via a metastable interstitial site (IO-oct) has a comparatively low migration energy. Lanthanum copper oxide (La2CuO4) precursors for superconductors were synthesized by acetate/nitrate self-propagating combustion synthesis (SPCS) in the presence of urea at different ratio of O/F. Phase-pure La2CuO4 powder could be obtained by calcining the as-prepared precursors at temperature as low as 600 °C. It was demonstrated that the ratio of O/F strongly influenced the composition and morphology of the precursors as well as the samples calcined at various temperatures. We have studied the synthesis conditions, demonstrating the existence of a relationship between the calcination temperature and the calcination time needed to obtain the pure phase. An interesting stereoscopic network structure was observed on the samples synthesized at the ratio of O/F = 0.20, morphology evolution of the samples was also investigated. A novel temperature fluctuation synthesis and simultaneous densification process for the preparation of Ti3SiC2 was developed. The advantages of this novel method include low synthesis temperature, short reaction time and simultaneous densification. The microstructure and room temperature mechanical properties of the Ti3SiC2 synthesized using this method were investigated. The result demonstrated that the Ti3SiC2 ceramic consisted of mainly laminated grains. It was found, with the aid of computer simulated crystallite shape, that the laminated Ti3SiC2 grains were composed of thin hexagonal plates. These laminated grains characterized the Ti3SiC2, and were responsible for the mechanical properties of the polycrystalline Ti3SiC2 ceramic. The measured flexural strength and the fracture toughness were 470 ± 26 MPa and 7.0 ± 0.2 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The high toughness was attributed to the contribution of crack deflection, crack bridging, delaminating and grain pull-out of laminated Ti3SiC2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cerium oxide (CeO) is a promising material that has potential for use in a number of applications, such as resistive-type oxygen sensors and solid oxide fuel cells. In this work, the sintering behavior of hydrothermal synthesized nano-size CeO powders and chemical precipitated and commercial micron-size CeO powders were investigated by continuous monitoring of the shrinkage kinetics. The results demonstrated that during the high temperature sintering process a partial redox reaction of ceria occurred, i.e., a fraction of Ce was reduced to Ce, and oxygen gas was released. The redox reaction influenced the sintering behavior of CeO, resulting in a decrease in density and microcracking for the hydrothermal synthesized nano-size CeO powder compacts and sagged points in the sintering curves for the chemical precipitated and commercial micron-size CeO powder compacts. It was found by scanning electron microscopy that the partial redox reaction of ceria produced additional pores in the powder compacts during the sintering process and thus much higher temperatures were needed to achieve high density. High purity hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders were synthesized through the wet-chemical method and subsequent freeze-drying or heat-drying, respectively. Dense polycrystalline HAp ceramics were obtained by sintering the powder compacts in air in the temperature range 1100–1350°C. Results show that the freeze-drying method can produce highly homogeneous, fine-grained HAp powders. The relative density, Vickers hardness and flexural strength of the sintered freeze-dried HAp ceramics increased with the sintering temperature, reaching a maximum at around 1350°C, and the highest values obtained were 99.0%, 820 and 110 MPa, respectively. All these mechanical properties of the freeze-dried HAp ceramics are much higher than those of the conventionally heat-dried HAp ceramics. Activating the plasticity of ZrB2 is a promising approach to improve its key properties for applications in hypersonic vehicles, including high temperature strength and thermal shock resistance. The present work demonstrates that ideal shear strength of ZrB2, which is a good indicator of the critical stress for dislocation nucleation, can be significantly reduced by dissolving of appropriate alloying elements. Analyzing on the bonding nature of ZrB2 reveals that choosing alloying elements with low energy valence electrons will prevent electron transferring from alloying element to the electron deficient B-B π orbits, which will reduce the local stability of the region surrounding the alloying element. Under the criterion, elements with d electrons tending to be full-filled (Ag, Au, Pd and Pt, the full-filled state is associated with low energy level) are selected as promising candidates with their prominent efficiency in reducing ideal shear strengths verified by first-principles calculations. The conventional wisdom to tailor the properties of binary transition metal carbides by order-disorder phase transformation has been inapplicable for the machinable ternary carbides (MTCs) due to the absence of ordered phase in bulk sample. Here, the presence of an ordered phase with structural carbon vacancies in Nb4AlC3-x (x ≈ 0.3) ternary carbide is predicted by first-principles calculations, and experimentally identified for the first time by transmission electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Consistent with the first-principles prediction, the ordered phase, o-Nb4AlC3, crystalizes in P63/mcm with a = 5.423 Å, c = 24.146 Å. Coexistence of ordered (o-Nb4AlC3) and disordered (Nb4AlC3-x) phase brings about abundant domains with irregular shape in the bulk sample. Both heating and electron irradiation can induce the transformation from o-Nb4AlC3 to Nb4AlC3-x. Our findings may offer substantial insights into the roles of carbon vacancies in the structure stability and order-disorder phase transformation in MTCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
