Traffic accidents and derailed train-related incidents have occurred more often than ever in recent years, resulting in some economic damage and casualties. Reinforced concrete (RC) constructions often involve derailed train and vehicle accidents. Rarely are such side collisions studied in previous studies. To do this, high-fidelity simulation-based finite-element (FE) models are created in this paper to accurately simulate the collision of circular RC members with a derailed train. The reinforced concrete member structure is common in high-speed railway stations. The impact energy of the impact body is significant, causing structural member failure. It analyses the dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete members under unequal span impact loads. Numerical implementations of impact issues are discussed from the perspective of geometric, contact, and material properties. The reliability and precision of the ABAQUS code to solve impact issues are verified by comparing failure modes, impact, and deflection time history experimental outputs. By analysing the impact response characteristics, used the control variables to study the failure process and mode (including the characteristics of impact and reaction forces, deflection time history curve, impact force–deflection curve, and bearing reaction force–deflection curve). The reinforcement ratio, impact velocity, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio significantly affect shear crack pattern and development. With the fast growth of high-speed rail in recent years, derailment has become the first hidden danger of high-speed rail transportation. The high-speed train passes near the station building. So the train may derail and hit the station building. Building a high-speed railway station usually uses a reinforced concrete structure. As a result of high impact energy on the impact body, the reinforced concrete (RC) member may fail; the impact point is near the member's foot; the structural member's constraint can be considered fixed support. This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of four types of circular reinforced concrete members under unequal lateral impact loads. The RC member's failure mechanism and dynamic response addressed the significance of unequal lateral impact load. The usual circular reinforced concrete members are used as the model to perform the drop-weight impact test. The specimens' crack pattern, failure mechanism, impact, deflection, and strain time–history curves are obtained. Findings show that between the impact point and the adjacent support, shear fractures occur that fail in shear mode. Shear cracks are based on impact velocity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and stirrup ratio. One type is more destructive to members and nodes. A shear fracture occurs when a longitudinal reinforcement fractures towards the closer support. The effects of impact velocity, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and stirrup ratio on the dynamic impact response are studied. The experimental results may help improve structural member impact resistance. The critical section (right side) computed the static shear resistance using shear force, whereas the maximum external load resistance determines static bending moment resistance. Cross-talk between competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) may play a critical role in revealing potential mechanisms of tumor development and physiology. Glioblastoma is the most common type of malignant primary brain tumor, and the mechanisms of tumor genesis and development in glioblastoma are unclear. Here, to investigate the role of non-coding RNAs and the ceRNA network in glioblastoma, we performed paired-end RNA sequencing and microarray analyses to obtain the expression profiles of mRNAs, lncRNAs, circRNAs and miRNAs. We identified that the expression of 501 lncRNAs, 1999 mRNAs, 2038 circRNAs and 143 miRNAs were often altered between glioblastoma and matched normal brain tissue. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses were performed on these differentially expressed mRNAs and miRNA-mediated target genes of lncRNAs and circRNAs. Furthermore, we used a multi-step computational framework and several bioinformatics methods to construct a ceRNA network combining mRNAs, miRNAs, lncRNAs and circRNA, based on co-expression analysis between the differentially expressed RNAs. We identified that plenty of lncRNAs, CircRNAs and their downstream target genes in the ceRNA network are related to glutamatergic synapse, suggesting that glutamate metabolism is involved in glioma biological functions. Epileptic seizures, the most common symptom accompanying glioma, are closely associated with tumor growth and patient quality of life. However, the association between glioma and glioma-related epilepsy is poorly understood. In fact, findings related to the location of epileptogenicity have been inconsistent in previous studies. We investigated seizure foci in patients with glioma and the corresponding association between glioma-related epilepsy and the tumoral and peritumoral microenvironment. Clinical characteristics, extracellular electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry, and western blots were conducted on 12 patients with glioma; nine patients had histories of preoperative seizures while three did not. Samples from included patients were used to identify seizure foci and mTOR pathway status. Electrophysiological recordings were conducted on 36 samples (tumor, peritumoral, and normal brain tissues) from 12 patients. Interictal-like discharges (ILDs) were observed in seven of nine peritumoral tissues obtained from patients with glioma that had experienced perioperative seizures. No ILDs were observed in any other sample groups. Western blots and immunohistochemistry for mTOR pathway proteins (mTOR and S6k) suggested that the mTOR pathway was activated in peritumoral tissues of patients with seizure history, but inactivated in patients without seizure history. Our results suggest that mTOR pathway expression in peritumoral tissues is associated with tumor-related seizures, thus providing a potential target for therapeutics aimed at simultaneously controlling gliomas and seizures. The deformation behaviors (flow behavior, power dissipation, dynamic recrystallization, and microstructure evolution) of a typical powder metallurgy nickel-based superalloy were investigated in compression tests at temperatures range of 1020-1140 °C and strain rates range of 0.001-1.0 s-1 with the true strains of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7, respectively. The efficiency of power dissipation can be shown by the power dissipation maps at different true strains. The results showed that true strain had a great effect on the power dissipation. Besides, the deformed microstructures were investigated. The processes of microstructure evolution at different deformation temperatures and strain rates are different. The continuous dynamic recrystallization takes place at the deformation condition of 1080 °C/0.1 s-1. The fine and uniform dynamic recrystallized grains gradually replace the pre-existing grains with the increase of true strain. The discontinuous dynamic recrystallization takes place at the deformation condition of 1110 °C/0.001 s-1. The fine dynamic recrystallized grains grow up and a part of new fine grains appear in the dynamic recrystallized grains because of the periodic dynamic recrystallization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of multicomponent alloys out of a vast compositional space is a daunting task, especially for bulk metallic glasses composed of three or more elements. Despite an increasing theoretical understanding of glass formation, bulk metallic glasses are predominantly developed through a sequential and time-consuming trial-and-error approach. Even for binary systems, accurate quantum mechanical approaches are still many orders of magnitude away from being able to simulate the relatively slow kinetics of glass formation. Here, we present a high-throughput strategy where ~3,000 alloy compositions are fabricated simultaneously and characterized for thermoplastic formability through parallel blow forming. Using this approach, we identified the composition with the highest thermoplastic formability in the glass-forming system Mg-Cu-Y. The method provides a versatile toolbox for unveiling complex correlations of material properties and glass formation, and should facilitate a drastic increase in the discovery rate of metallic glasses. The article discusses the study which describes the properties of zinc oxide films synthesized by ion beam deposition and post-annealing mechanism. It indicates that post-annealing has played an important role on the film electrical and optical properties. It notes that the optical properties showing the blue shift along with annealing time has stable qualities with no obvious morphological changes.

Hemoglobin (Hb) Q-Thailand, Hb E, and other forms of thalassemia are prevalent in Southeast Asia including China. We report a hitherto undescribed condition in which four forms of Hb defects co-segregate. The proband was a 20-year-old Chinese man who presented with moderate hypochromic microcytosis with Hb 73 g/l, hematocrit (Hct) 27.0%, mean corpuscular volume 57.6 fl, mean corpuscular hemoglobin 15.5 pg, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) 268.0 g/l. Both Hb electrophoresis and high-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed abnormal Hbs. DNA analysis demonstrated that the proband was a double heterozygote of Hb Q-Thailand and Hb E in combination with α0-thalassemia and Southeast Asian-type hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (SEA-HPFH). Family study identified that her father was a double heterozygote for Hb Q-Thailand and Hb E, whereas her mother was a heterozygote for SEA-HPFH with α0-thalassemia. Moreover, his brother was a classical Hb QH disease patient. The genotype–phenotype relationship observed in this Chinese family with complex thalassemia syndromes is presented. Cryptococcal infection in CNS is frequently seen in HIV patients and those with other immunosuppressed conditions. However, cryptococcal granuloma in CNS in immunocompetent patient is rare. We present one new case of cryptococcoma and review literature to illustrate diagnosis and treatment of these lesions. We conducted literature search in Pubmed search engine of the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Seventeen cases of CNS cryptoccoma in immunocompetent patients, including ours, have been reported to date. Of them, two patients had lesions inside spinal cord, and C. neoformans var. gattii was identified in three cases. All patients were symptomatic with normal immunocompetency although two patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus and one had torsades de pointes. Eight patients received surgical treatment and all were given antifungal agents except one suspected of teniasis. With literature reports and our experiences, we suggest that ring shaped enhancement of mass lesion with or without cystic changes in MR scan may indicate cryptococcoma, but definitive diagnosis relies on pathology study of lesion specimen. Open surgery and anti-fungal therapy should be scheduled, and outcome of cryptococcoma is largely determined by its locations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myxomas are common cardiac tumors, which are usually managed by complete excision. We report a case of myxomas at different stages of development found simultaneously in the left atrium and both ventricles. The patient underwent successful surgical excision of all myxomas and there has been no clinical or echocardiographic evidence of recurrence or valvular insufficiency in 6 months of follow-up. In a recent work, Chen et al. [L-Y. Chen et al., J. Mater. Res. 24, 3116 (2009)] presented microstructural observation on a plastic Zr64.13Cu15.75Ni10.12Al10bulk metallic glass (BMG) reported in Liu et al. [Y.H. Liu et al., Science 315, 1385 (2007)] by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and anomalous small-angle x-ray scattering experiments. Based on their observation, they draw a conclusion that there are no micrometer-sized or nanometer-sized structural heterogeneities in the BMG, and the large plasticity of the BMG cannot be ascribed to the structural heterogeneities. In this comment, we show that their assessment and analysis of their observation are problematic, and it is not evident and precise to use their observation to claim that the BMG is homogeneous and the structural heterogeneity in the glass is an artifact.
