Abstract This article constructed a food taste deviation index using text analysis based on food culture as a measure of cultural inclusion. Cultural inclusion was related to corporate total factor productivity, aiming to investigate whether the cultural inclusion affects corporate sustainability. The findings showed uneven distribution of cultural inclusion in various areas of China, contributing to the unbalanced sustainable development of firms in different regions, as reflected by the higher total factor productivity of firms located in regions with higher cultural inclusion. A test using mountainous undulation as an instrumental variable verified the causal relationship between cultural inclusion and firm sustainability. Besides, a regression discontinuity design was employed to mitigate the impacts of the bidirectional causality. Moreover, a high level of cultural inclusion in top managers’ hometown significantly improved corporate sustainability, suggesting that executives can transmit cultural inclusion in society. In addition, firms in more inclusive regions are more motivated to increase their social responsibility to staff as a way to promote their total factor productivity, suggesting that cultural inclusion promotes firm sustainability by increasing firms’ care for staff. This article also found that cultural inclusion has heterogeneous effects across firms of different levels of industry competition, and different levels of analyst attention. The research reveals the impact of cultural inclusion on the real economy and help academics dissect the informal institutional reasons behind the sustainable development of firms in different geographies from a new perspective, contributing to the promotion of economic sustainability at the regional level and related policy formulation.

Purpose: Achieving a pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) remains a challenge for most patients with rectal cancer. Exploring the potential of combining NCRT with immunotherapy or targeted therapy for those achieving a partial response (PR) offers a promising avenue to enhance treatment efficacy. This study investigated the impact of NCRT on the tumor microenvironment in locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) patients who exhibited a PR. Methods: This was a retrospective, observational study. Five patients demonstrating a PR after neoadjuvant treatment for LARC were enrolled in the study. Biopsy samples before treatment and resected specimens after treatment were stained with a panel of 26 antibodies targeting various immune and tumor-related markers, each labeled with distinct metal tags. The labeled samples were then analyzed using the Hyperion imaging system. Results: Heterogeneity within the tumor microenvironment was observed both before and after NCRT. Notably, tumor-associated macrophages, CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, CD56 + natural killer cells, tumor-associated neutrophils, cytokeratin, and E-cadherin exhibited slight increase in abundance within the tumor microenvironment following treatment (change ratios = 0.78, 0.2, 0.27, 0.32, 0.17, 0.46, 0.32, respectively). Conversely, the number of CD14 + monocytes, CD19 + B cells, CD45 + CD4 + T cells, collagen I, α-smooth muscle actin, vimentin, and β-catenin proteins displayed significant decreases post-treatment (change ratios = 1.73, 1.92, 1.52, 1.25, 1.52, 1.12, 2.66, respectively). Meanwhile, Foxp3 + regulatory cells demonstrated no significant change (change ratio = 0.001). Conclusions: NCRT has diverse effects on various components of the tumor microenvironment in LARC patients who achieve a PR after treatment. Edible bird’s nest (EBN), a most highly priced and valuable foodstuff, contains high percentage of proteins and carbohydrates. However, proteins adhering to these carbohydrates make the EBN hard and tough, which need to be boiled as the bird’s nest soup to make the Chinese cuisine. To overcome the hard and tough texture of EBN and improve the digestion degrees, the present study screened and identified a probiotic strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens YZW02 from 5-year stored EBN sample completely solubilizing EBN for the first time. The 24-h B. amyloliquefaciens fermented EBN contained 20.30–21.48 mg/mL of the soluble protein contents with a recovery rate of 98–100%, DPPH radical scavenging rate of 84.76% and ABTS radical scavenging capacity of 41.05%. The mixed fermentation of B. amyloliquefaciens YZW02 and Bacillus natto BN1 were further applied to improve the low-MW peptide percentages and antioxidant activities. The mixed-fermentation of B. natto BN1 with 4-h cultured B. amyloliquefaciens YZW02 had the lowest percentage (82.23%) of >12-kDa proteins/peptides and highest percentages of 3–12 kDa, 1–3 kDa and 0.1–1 kDa peptides of 8.6% ± 0.08, 7.57% ± 0.09, 1.77% ± 0.05 and 0.73% ± 0.05, with the highest DPPH, ABTS and •OH scavenging capacity of 90.23%, 46.45% and 49.12%, respectively. Intestinal macrophages play crucial roles in both intestinal inflammation and immune homeostasis. They can adopt two distinct phenotypes, primarily determined by environmental cues. These phenotypes encompass the classically activated pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype, as well as the alternatively activated anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. In regular conditions, intestinal macrophages serve to shield the gut from inflammatory harm. However, when a combination of genetic and environmental elements influences the polarization of these macrophages, it can result in an M1/M2 macrophage activation imbalance, subsequently leading to a loss of control over intestinal inflammation. This shift transforms normal inflammatory responses into pathological damage within the intestines. In patients with ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal cancer (UC-CRC), disorders related to intestinal inflammation are closely correlated with an imbalance in the polarization of intestinal M1/M2 macrophages. Therefore, reinstating the equilibrium in M1/M2 macrophage polarization could potentially serve as an effective approach to the prevention and treatment of UC-CRC. This paper aims to scrutinize the clinical evidence regarding Chinese medicine (CM) in the treatment of UC-CRC, the pivotal role of macrophage polarization in UC-CRC pathogenesis, and the potential mechanisms through which CM regulates macrophage polarization to address UC-CRC. In recent years, the stroke incidence has been increasing year by year, and the related sequelae after stroke, such as cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, and post-stroke depression, seriously affect the patient's rehabilitation and daily activities. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), as a safe, non-invasive, and effective new rehabilitation method, has been widely recognized in clinical practice. This article reviews the application and research progress of rTMS in treating different functional impairments (cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, unilateral spatial neglect, depression) after stroke in recent years, and preliminary summarized the possible mechanisms. It has been found that the key parameters that determine the effectiveness of rTMS in improving post-stroke functional impairments include pulse number, stimulated brain areas, stimulation intensity and frequency, as well as duration. Generally, high-frequency stimulation is used to excite the ipsilateral cerebral cortex, while low-frequency stimulation is used to inhibit the contralateral cerebral cortex, thus achieving a balance of excitability between the two hemispheres. However, the specific mechanisms and the optimal stimulation mode for different functional impairments have not yet reached a consistent conclusion, and more research is needed to explore and clarify the best way to use rTMS. Furthermore, we will identify the issues and challenges in the current research, explore possible mechanisms to deepen understanding of rTMS, propose future research directions, and offer insightful insights for better clinical applications. Summary: An independent correlation between pre-RDW and 1-year mortality after surgery in elderly hip fracture can be used to predict mortality in elderly hip fracture patients and has predictive significance in anemia patients. With further research, a treatment algorithm can be developed to potentially identify patients at high risk of preoperative mortality. Introduction: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is an independent predictor of various disease states in elderly individuals, but its association with the prognosis of elderly hip fracture patients is controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of RDW in such patients, construct a prediction model containing RDW using random survival forest (RSF) and Cox regression analysis, and compare RDW in patients with and without anemia. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery, selected the best variables using RSF, stratified the independent variables by Cox regression analysis, constructed a 1-year mortality prediction model of elderly hip fracture with RDW, and conducted internal validation and external validation. Results: Two thousand one hundred six patients were included in this study. The RSF algorithm selects 12 important influencing factors, and Cox regression analysis showed that eight variables including preoperative RDW (pre-RDW) were independent risk factors for death within 1-year after hip fracture surgery in elderly patients. Stratified analysis showed that pre-RDW was still independently associated with 1-year mortality in the non-anemia group and not in the anemia group. The nomogram prediction model had high differentiation and fit, and the prediction model constructed by the total cohort of patients was also used for validation of patients in the anemia patients and obtained good clinical benefits. Objective: To evaluate if berberine can act on vitamin D receptors (VDR) and thereby regulate the expression of tight junction proteins (TJPs) in irritable bowel syndrame-diarrhea-predominant (IBS-D) rats. Methods: The newborn rats were induced into IBS-D rat model via neonatal maternal separation combined with acetic acid chemical stimulation. After modeling, the model was evaluated and rats were divided into the control group and berberine treatment groups (0.85, 1.7 and 3.4 mg/kg, once a day for 2 weeks). The distal colon was obtained and colonic epithelial cells (CECs) were isolated and cultured after IBS-D model evaluation. The vitamin D receptor response element (VDRE) reporter gene was determined in the CECs of IBS-D rats to analyze the effect of berberine on the VDRE promoter. VDR overexpression or silencing technology was used to analyze whether VDR plays a role in promoting intestinal barrier repair, and to determine which region of VDR plays a role in berberine-regulated intestinal TJPs. Results: The IBS-D rat model was successfully constructed and the symptoms were improved by berberine in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05). The activity of VDRE promoter was also effectively promoted by berberine (P<0.05). Berberine increased the expression of TJPs in IBS-D CECs (P<0.05). VDR expression was significantly increased after transfection of different domains of VDR when compared to normal control and basic plasmid groups (all P<0.05). RT-qPCR and Western blot results showed that compared with the blank group, expressions of occludin and zonula occludens-1 were significantly higher in VDR containing groups (all P<0.05). Berberine plus pCMV-Myc-VDR-N group exerted the highest expression levels of occludin and zonula occludens-1 (P<0.05). Background: The ubiquitin proteasome has a major role in the development of many tumors. However, the prognostic importance of ubiquitin proteasome-system genes (UPSGs) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is not fully defined. Methods: The TCGA and ICGC datasets were utilized to obtain transcriptional profiling data as well as clinicopathological information about HCC. The 3-UPSGs signature for the TCGA cohort was developed via univariate and LASSO Cox regression analyses. Differential expression of genes was demonstrated by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Biological pathways were studied using GSVA and GSEA. Six algorithms were used to compare immune infiltration between the two risk groups. Furthermore, drug sensitivity was measured using the "pRRophetic" R package. The predictive capacity of the 3-UPSGs signature for sensitivity to immunotherapy was also explored. Moreover, we performed a pan-cancer analysis of the 3-UPSGs signature. Results: A risk model containing 3 UPSGs (DCAF13, CDC20 and PSMB5) was developed. IHC and qRT-PCR results showed that signature genes were significantly overexpressed in HCC tissues. The high-risk group had a worse prognosis, with a higher clinicopathological grade, higher levels of tumor mutation burden (TMB), elevated levels of immune checkpoint (IC) expression, as well as increased sensitivity to immunotherapy. The two risk groups also differ in their sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs. Furthermore, the three UPSGs may play crucial roles in the progression of multiple types of cancers. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. The progression of numerous malignancies has been linked to abnormal vesicle-mediated transport-related gene (VMTRG) expression. The prognostic importance of VMTRGs in HCC is uncertain nonetheless. Methods: Utilizing HCC data from TCGA and ICGC, we employed univariate cox analysis, unsupervised clustering, and lasso analysis to construct molecular subtypes and prognostic signature of HCC based on the prognostic-associated VMTRGs expression levels. Subsequently, we validated the expression levels of the signature genes. We investigated the probable pathways using gene set variation analysis (GSVA) and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Six methods were utilized to compare immune cell infiltration between two risk groups. Moreover, the "pRRophetic" algorithm was utilized to test the drug sensitivity of both groups. Results: We identified two distinct subtypes with divergent biological behaviors and immune functionality through unsupervised clustering. Subtype C1 demonstrated a poorer prognosis. A prognostic signature incorporating two VMTRGs (KIF2C and RAC1) was formulated. Immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR analyses unveiled a significant upregulation of these pivotal genes within HCC tissues. The prognosis was worse for the high-risk group, which also had a higher clinicopathological grade, higher levels of tumor mutation burden (TMB), a higher immunological infiltration of CD8 + T cells, a higher expression of immune checkpoints, and enhanced immunotherapy efficacy. These two risk groups also have varied chemotherapy drug sensitivities. Purpose: Dynamic PET is an essential tool in oncology due to its ability to visualize and quantify radiotracer uptake, which has the potential to improve imaging quality. However, image noise caused by a low photon count in dynamic PET is more significant than in static PET. This study aims to develop a novel denoising method, namely the Guided Block Matching and 4-D Transform Domain Filter (GBM4D) projection, to enhance dynamic PET image reconstruction. Methods: The sinogram was first transformed using the Anscombe method, then denoised using a combination of hard thresholding and Wiener filtering. Each denoising step involved guided block matching and grouping, collaborative filtering, and weighted averaging. The guided block matching was performed on accumulated PET sinograms to prevent mismatching due to low photon counts. The performance of the proposed denoising method (GBM4D) was compared to other methods such as wavelet, total variation, non-local means, and BM3D using computer simulations on the Shepp–Logan and digital brain phantoms. The denoising methods were also applied to real patient data for evaluation. Results: In all phantom studies, GBM4D outperformed other denoising methods in all time frames based on the structural similarity and peak signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, GBM4D yielded the lowest root mean square error in the time-activity curve of all tissues and produced the highest image quality when applied to real patient data. Conclusion: GBM4D demonstrates excellent denoising and edge-preserving capabilities, as validated through qualitative and quantitative assessments of both temporal and spatial denoising performance. The temperature-dependent absorption coefficient and thermal conductivity of a quartz window are obtained through experimental tests at a wide range of temperatures. A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer with a heated cavity is used for performing the transmittance measurements. The spectral absorption coefficient of the quartz window is inverted by the transmittance information at different temperatures using a genetic algorithm. Then, a quartz window-graphite plate-quartz window multilayer structure is designed, and the transient response of the structure subjected to high-temperature heating is recorded by a self-designed setup. Cooperating with the above absorption coefficient, a non-gray radiative-conductive heat transfer model is built for the multilayer structure, and the intrinsic thermal conductivity of the quartz window is identified. Finally, the effects of the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient and spectral selective features of the medium on the heat transfer characteristics are discussed. The results show that the absorption coefficient gradually increases with temperature. The intrinsic thermal conductivity of the quartz window varies from 1.35 to 2.52 W/(m·K) as the temperature rises, while the effective thermal conductivity is higher than the intrinsic thermal conductivity due to thermal radiation, specifically 26.4% higher at 1100 K. In addition, it is found that the influence of the temperature-dependent absorption coefficient on temperature of unheated side shows a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. When the absorption coefficient varies greatly with wavelength, a non-gray radiative-conductive heat transfer model should be built for the semitransparent materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To explore the physicochemical properties of fat coal at different pyrolysis temperatures in UCG environment. In this study, aiming at the temperature variation range in the process of UCG reaction, the pyrolysis experiments of fat coal in Tianjin Qianjiaying Coal Mine at 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000°C were carried out by using a high-temperature tubular pyrolysis furnace. XRD and FTIR analyzed the sample. The results show that with the increase of the pyrolysis temperature, the half-width of 002 and the 100 diffraction peaks in the XRD diffraction pattern have certain regularity. Moreover, due to the influence of depolymerization and polycondensation, the change of crystalline structure parameters with temperature shows obvious phase characteristics. During the pyrolysis process, most of the C–H and C–O functional groups will precipitate out along with the volatiles, which is manifested in that the absorption peak intensity of the band to which the functional group belongs is weakened to varying degrees. Chemotherapy resistance of colorectal cancer stem cells (CRC-SCs) has become a major challenge in clinical treatment of cancer. Methionine restriction (MR) enhances the therapeutic effect of chemotherapeutic agents. The aim of this study was to explore the molecular pathways that MR affects the chemotherapeutic sensitivity of CRC-SCs. CD133+ and CD133– SW480 or SW620 cells were isolated by magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS). Mouse xenograft tumor model was established by subcutaneous inoculation of CD133+ SW480. MTT assay was used to detect cell viability. Phase distribution of cell cycle was detected by flow cytometry. Western blotting was used to detect drug-resistant related protein expression. miR-320d and transcription factor c-Myc expressions were detected by qRT-PCR. The interaction between miR-320d and c-Myc was verified by luciferase assay. CD133+ SW480 and SW620 cells were more resistant to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) than CD133– cells. In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that 5-FU and MR combined therapy further inhibited CD133+ cell activity and ATP binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) expression, and reduced tumor volume compared with drug administration alone. Interference with miR-320d or overexpression of c-Myc reversed the increased chemotherapeutic sensitivity of CRC-SCs induced by synergistic therapy with 5-FU and MR. miR-320d can target and regulate c-Myc. Interference with c-Myc could reverse the increase in cell viability and ABCG2 expression caused by down-regulation of miR-320d. In conclusion, the combined chemotherapy with MR can enhance the chemotherapeutic sensitivity of CRC-SCs by up-regulation of miR-320d to inhibit c-Myc expression, which lays a molecular basis for MR regulation of chemotherapeutic sensitivity of CRC-SCs. A secondary reconstruction technique based on multi-section reconstruction is proposed to simultaneously reconstruct the space-dependent absorption coefficient, scattering coefficient, and thermal conductivity fields without any priori information in the participating medium. In the forward model, the finite volume method (FVM) is used to solve the coupled radiative–conductive problem. The radiative and temperature signals on one side of the medium boundary induced by laser irradiation heating are served as input measurements for the inverse analysis. In the inverse model, the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm is employed to solve the optimization problems. By this technique, more measurement signals can be obtained, which is necessary for exactly reconstructing the space-dependent optical and thermophysical parameters fields. All the retrieval results show that the proposed secondary reconstruction technique based on multi-section reconstruction can be adopted to reconstruct the complex space-dependent absorption coefficient, scattering coefficient, and thermal conductivity fields accurately and efficiently. This proposed technique will play an important role in practical application, such as non-destructive testing of materials, biology imaging in clinical medicine and optimization and design of composites. A core–shell QDs@mSiO2@y-AuNCs nanoprobe was prepared, and a new ratiometric fluorescent sensor for thiram detection was developed. The mechanism of thiram sensing was investigated using FTIR, surface-enhanced Raman, XPS spectra, etc. The sensing of thiram was mainly ascribed to the formation of Au–S bonds between thiram and Au atoms on y-AuNCs surface, resulting in the dissociation of 11-MUA ligand from the y-AuNCs surface and the charge transfer between thiram and y-AuNCs. In the ratiometric fluorescence detection of thiram based on QDs@mSiO2@y-AuNCs, a linear range of 0.5–60 ng/mL was obtained with a LOD of 0.19 ng/mL. Compared with the fluorescence detection based on y-AuNCs, the ratiometric fluorescence detection of thiram demonstrated 3-fold enhanced sensitivity. The improvement was ascribed to two aspects: the fluorescence emission of y-AuNCs was enhanced after they were loaded onto the QDs@mSiO2 nanoparticles; the ratiometric detection mode provided more precise sensing. The detection of thiram can be completed immediately after mixing the nanoprobe with thiram. Good recoveries of thiram in apple and pear samples were achieved. Copper nanomaterials based on DNA scaffold (DNA-Cu NMs) are becoming a novel fluorescent material, but it is still challenging to obtain highly fluorescent DNA-Cu NMs with excellent stability. In this work, we report a kind of copper nano-assemblies (Cu NASs) with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) property using DNA dendrimers with sticky end as template. The sticky end of the DNA dendrimers induced the formation of much bigger Cu NASs with average size ranging from 131 to 264 nm, depending on the length of the DNA dendrimer sticky end from 6 bases to 27 bases. Compared with complete complementary DNA dendrimer, nearly 6-fold fluorescence enhancement was achieved using DNA dendrimer with 27 bases sticky end. Moreover, the DNA dendrimer-Cu NASs demonstrated excellent stability in serum and could be rapidly quenched by Pb2+ ions. Based on the above property, highly sensitive and selective fluorescent detection of Pb2+ ions was possible with a linear range of 2.0–100 nM and a detection limit of 0.75 nM. Due to the sensitive and rapid response to Pb2+ as well as excellent stability in complex matrix, the proposed fluorescent Cu NASs demonstrated high potential as an excellent fluorescent probe for Pb2+ in complex matrix. The flow properties of a water inrush from a fault fracture zone are important for mining engineering applications. Numerous fault-delayed water inrush cases were analyzed, and it was concluded that the delayed groundwater bursting evolution in the fault fractured zone can be divided into two phases: (i) the activation of faults and (ii) the fault-weakening seepage. Three flow equations that indicate the flow variability of three flow stages in the second phase were established. A finite-element numerical model was established, and the evolution rules of the groundwater flow pattern under the time effect were obtained. Finally, the water inflow over time was calculated. Background/Aims: Targeted drug delivery vehicles with low immunogenicity and toxicity are needed for cancer therapy. Here, we prepare an active targeting drug carrier of low immunogenicity and toxicity for targeted therapy. Methods: Immature dendritic cells (imDCs) from BALB/c mice were used as donor cells of exosomes (Exos) that were transfected with the plasmids expressing fusion proteins of a tumor-targeting peptide known as internalizing RGD (iRGD) to construct a type of tumor-targeting iRGD-Exos and observe the interaction between these iRGD-Exos. Also, recombinant methioninase (rMETase) was loaded into the iRGD-Exos by electroporation to construct iRGD-Exos-rMETase and to assess the tumor-targeting function of the iRGD-Exos-rMETase. Finally, 30 BALB/c were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6), to observe tumor growth in vivo. Results: The iRGD-Exos-rMETase was 99.58 nm in diameter and presented a unique "goblet" structure under transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of 19.05%. iRGD-Exos-rMETase group has the strongest tumor suppressive effect. Compared to the iRGD-Exos-rMETase group, rMETase group and the blank-Exos-rMETase group were less effective, while the PBS group and the iRGD-Exos group showed no inhibitory effect on tumor growth. The pseudo-analog wireless video transmission technology can improve the effectiveness, reliability, and robustness of the conventional digital system in video broadcast scenarios. Although some prototypes of IEEE 802.11 series have been developed for researchers to do simulations and experiments, they are usually expensive and provide very limited access to the physical layer. More importantly, these prototypes cannot be used to verify the correctness of the new proposed pseudo-analog wireless video transmission algorithms directly due to limited modulation modes they can support. In this paper, we present a novel design of software radio platform (SDR)-based pseudo-analog wireless video transceiver which is completely transparent and allows users to learn all the implementation details. Firstly, we prove that the analog method can also achieve the optimal performance as the digital method from the perspective of the rate-distortion theory. Then, we describe the two hardware implementation difficulties existed in the designing process including the data format modification and the non-linear distortion. Next, we introduce the implementation details of the designed transceiver. Finally, we analyze the performance of the designed transceiver. We report the first use of metallic nanozyme as colorimetric probe for Pb2+ determination. The method is based on the surface leaching of Au@PtNP nanozyme by Pb2+-S2O32− ions, accompanied by a decreased catalytic activity of the metallic nanozyme. To construct this colorimetric determination, the Pt deposition onto the AuNPs was carefully investigated and other experimental factors including kind of substrate and buffer were optimized. With increasing Pb2+ concentration, the catalytic activity of the Au@PtNPs decreased gradually. As a result, the blue color at 650 nm from the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine by H2O2 faded gradually. A determination limit of 3.0 nM Pb2+ with a linear range from 20 to 800 nM was obtained. The assay demonstrated negligible response to common metal ions even at elevated concentrations. This colorimetric method was applied to the determination of Pb2+ ions spiked in lake water samples, and good recoveries (96.8–105.2%) were obtained. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the leading causes of heart failure. A large proportion of genetic cause remains unexplained, especially in idiopathic DCM. We performed target next-generation sequencing of 102 genes which were known causes or candidate genes for cardiomyopathies and channelpathies in 118 prospectively recruited Han Chinese patients with idiopathic DCM. 41 of the 118 patients carried 40 pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, providing a molecular diagnosis in 34.7% of patients. 32 of these variants were novel. TTN truncating variants were predominant, with a frequency of 31.0%, followed by variants of LMNA (14.3%), RBM20 (4.8%), and NEXN (4.8%). These 4 genes accounted for over half variants identified. No significant difference in clinical characteristics or rates of reaching the composite end point (cardiac transplantation and death from cardiac causes) between pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant carriers and noncarriers (hazard ratio 1.11, 95% CI: 0.41 to 3.00), or between patients with TTN truncating variants or without (hazard ratio 0.49, 95% CI: 0.36 to 6.10). The mechanical properties of poly(arylene sulfide sulfone) (PASS) electrospun membrane were significantly enhanced by co-electrospinning with semi-aromatic nylon poly(m-xylene adipamide) (MXD6), another engineering plastic with high thermal stability and good mechanical properties. The tensile strength of PASS membrane increased with increased incorporation of MXD6, and was tripled when 20% MXD6 was incorporated. The mechanism of the mechanical property improvement is the existence of hydrogen bonding interaction between PASS and MXD6 and between adjacent fibers at the intersections. Thermal properties of the PASS/MXD6 membranes were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed that the membranes could be stably utilized up to 180 °C without any change in appearance and without decomposition. Contact angle measurements of all the membranes showed hydrophobic character. To demonstrate the potential applications of PASS/MXD6 blend membranes, their oil absorption capacities were evaluated with three oils of different viscosities, which proved that the PASS/MXD6 membranes are better absorbents than commercial non-woven polypropylene fibers. Microstructure test of lignite in Huainan Panyi Coal Mine by mercury intrusion method. According to the proportion of accumulated pore volume fraction in different radius range of coal, the pore size is classified. The pore structure characteristics of lignite at different temperatures are obtained by using the mercury retreat curve: with the increase of temperature, the trend of macropore growth is obvious. Based on the fractal dimension calculation principle of pore structure, the fractal dimension of various kinds of pore is calculated by linear regression: The fractal dimension of small pore is bigger than that of medium pore and large pore, which indicates that the pore structure of small pore is not uniform and the distribution of coal pore is dispersive at this stage. In order to study the microstructure characteristics of coal surface after different temperature and thermal effects of lignite, the SEM images of lignite after different temperatures were analyzed by means of theoretical analysis and experimental measurement (SEM microscanning electron microscopy) to studied the characteristics of organic matter and inorganic substance, fracture channel and pore structure. The results show that: At 150 °C, the volume of lignite expands and the pore size becomes larger, and the water loss fracture will be formed; 200 °C is the mutation temperature of the pore structure of lignite; After the temperature reaches 250 °C, the coal skeleton gradually becomes empty, the coal body starts to soften, produces colloidal fragments, and the fissure structure is more irregular; When the temperature reaches 350 °C, the ablation phenomenon is obvious. In this work, one-dimensional Ni-rich LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 microrod cathode material for lithium-ion battery has been firstly prepared by a simple stepwise oxalate co-precipitation method. Rod-like CoC2O4·2H2O formed in the first process is served as template for the formation of MC2O4·2H2O (M=Ni, Co, Mn) precursor, and the morphology of rod-like is maintained after the heat treatment with Li2CO3. The crystalline structure and morphology of the samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, and TEM/HRTEM. The electrochemical performances are evaluated by galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. With the beneficiation of micro/nanostructure, the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 microrod cathode material shows an initial discharge capacity of 162, 134, 117, and 105 mAh g−1 at 0.1 °C, 1 °C, 3 °C, and 5 °C, respectively, and maintains 72.8% of its initial discharge capacity after 100 cycles at 1 °C. Background: Autophagy plays an important role in regulating cisplatin (CDDP) resistance in gastric cancer cells. However, the underlying mechanism of methioninase (METase) in the regulation of autophagy and CDDP resistance of gastric cancer cells is still not clear. Materials and methods: Western blot was used to detect the levels of autophagy-related proteins, multidrug-resistant 1 (MDR-1), and FoxM1 protein. LncRNA HULC was detected by qRT-PCR. Cell viability was detected using CCK-8 assay. The interaction between lncRNA HULC and FoxM1 was confirmed by RNA pull-down and RIP assay. Results: Lentiviral vector carrying METase (LV-METase) suppressed autophagy and CDDP resistance of drug-resistant gastric cancer cells. LncRNA HULC was significantly downregulated in drug-resistant gastric cancer cells transfected with LV-METase. Besides, we found that lncRNA HULC interacted with FoxM1. In addition, METase suppressed autophagy to reduce CDDP resistance of drug-resistant gastric cancer cells through regulating HULC/FoxM1, and interfering HULC suppressed autophagy to reduce CDDP resistance of drug-resistant gastric cancer cells through regulating FoxM1. Finally, interfering HULC inhibited tumor growth in vivo. Background: Phlegm and blood stasis syndrome (PBSS) is one of the main syndromes in coronary heart disease (CHD). Syndromes of Chinese medicine (CM) are lack of quantitative and easy-implementation diagnosis standards. To quantify and standardize the diagnosis of PBSS, scales are usually applied. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of CM diagnosis scale of PBSS in CHD. Methods: Six hundred patients with stable angina pectoris of CHD, 300 in case group and 300 in control group, will be recruited from 5 hospitals across China. Diagnosis from 2 experts will be considered as the "gold standard". Coal seam water infusion is a universal comprehensive mine disaster prevention method practiced worldwide. The result of water infusion is determined by the structure and seepage characteristics of the coal sample around the borehole. In this paper, the structure and seepage characteristics of the coal sample under various stress and pore water pressures are measured via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology; the influence rule of confining pressure and pore water pressure during the test on the coal sample structure and seepage characteristics is analyzed. Based on fractal geometrical theory, the fractal model of permeability is created. The results show that the coal sample with water infusion has an intertwined internal fracture-pore structure and that the pore radius distribution is diverse. Through theoretical analysis and discussion, we found that there are no large changes in the pore area fractal dimension and the measured pore volume fractal dimension, but the trends of changes in these two fractal dimensions are opposite, because the pore area fractal dimension characterizes the homogeneity of the pore area distribution on the surface of a coal sample, and the measured pore volume fractal dimension characterizes the cumulative volumetric changes in the pores inside a coal sample. The changes in these two fractal dimensions validate that the pore structures inside a coal sample have similar in fractal characteristics and demonstrate that the coal seam water infusion technique will not damage the skeleton of the coal sample. The variation rules of theoretical permeability from the fractal model and the value from the liquid measurement versus confining pressure and pore water pressure are consistent, an increase in the water pressure will result in an increase in the permeability, and an increase in the confining pressure will result in a decrease in the permeability. However, because the seepage channels with a large diameter in the tested coal sample were blocked, there is a relatively large difference between the two permeabilities. Therefore, increasing the connectivity between the seepage channels with a large diameter will improve the effects of water infusion, which is implemented to prevent disasters. Through NMR experiment and theoretical analysis, this study establishes a quantitative relationship between the pore structures inside the coal sample and its permeability during coal seam water infusion process, provides an advanced experimental approach and theoretical analysis method, which will be of great importance in the improvement in the water infusion process implemented in deep working coal seams to prevent disasters and in the determination of the range of application of this process and the evaluation metrics for this process. Fungal infections by drug-resistant Candida albicans pose a global public health threat. However, the pathogen’s diploid genome greatly hinders genome-wide investigations of resistance mechanisms. Here, we develop an efficient piggyBac transposon-mediated mutagenesis system using stable haploid C. albicans to conduct genome-wide genetic screens. We find that null mutants in either gene FEN1 or FEN12 (encoding enzymes for the synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids as precursors of sphingolipids) exhibit resistance to fluconazole, a first-line antifungal drug. Mass-spectrometry analyses demonstrate changes in cellular sphingolipid composition in both mutants, including substantially increased levels of several mannosylinositolphosphoceramides with shorter fatty-acid chains. Treatment with fluconazole induces similar changes in wild-type cells, suggesting a natural response mechanism. Furthermore, the resistance relies on a robust upregulation of sphingolipid biosynthesis genes. Our results shed light into the mechanisms underlying azole resistance, and the new transposon-mediated mutagenesis system should facilitate future genome-wide studies of C. albicans. Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is the second most common leading cause of cancer-related death. Cancer stem cell (CSC) with the mark of CD44 played an important role in GC. rMETase was wildly exploited as chemotherapeutic option for GC. Polymers synthetic nanoparticle drug delivery systems have been commonly used for cancer therapy. With the decorating of Hyaluronic acid (HA), a receptor of CD44, nanoparticles exhibit with good biocompatibility and aqueous solubility.Methods: The characteristic of nanoparticles (NPs) was analyzed by TEM and DLS. The viability and proliferation of GC cells were examined by MTT assays. The levels of CD44, Cyt C, and c-caspase 3 were examined by Western blot. The level of ROS was measured by DCFH-DA assays. The morphology of tissues was detected using hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stain. Nude mice xenograft models were used to evaluate the effect of HA-PAMAM-Au-METase on GC.Results: The transfection of rMETase carried by HA-G5 PAMAM-Au visibly inhibited the proliferation and tumorsphere formation of GC cells through obviously enhancing METase activity. Elevation of METase activity suppressed the proliferation of CD44(+) GC cells through down-regulating MET in cellular supernatant that resulted in the increase of Cyc C and ROS levels. The number of CD44(+) GC cells in nude mice injected with G5 PAMAM-Au-METase decorated by HA was markly declined resulting in the inhibition of tumor growth.Conclusion: HA-G5 PAMAM-Au-METase significantly suppressed tumor growth of GC by targeted damaging the mitochondrial function of CD44(+) gastric CSCs. Aims: To determine the safety and efficacy of insulin degludec versus glargine in patients with type 1 (T1D) and type 2 (T2D) diabetes mellitus.Methods: Databases were searched until July 5, 2017. We included randomized controlled trials comparing degludec with glargine in diabetic patients, each with a minimum of 16 weeks of follow-up.Results: Eighteen trials with 16,791 patients were included. Degludec was associated with a statistically significant reduction in risk for all confirmed hypoglycemia at the maintenance treatment period [estimated rate ratio (ERR) 0.81; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.72‒0.92; P = 0.001], nocturnal confirmed hypoglycemia at the entire (ERR 0.71; 95% CI 0.63‒0.80; P < 0.001) and maintenance treatment period (ERR 0.65; 95% CI 0.59‒0.71; P < 0.001), all irrespective of the pooled diabetic populations and follow-up durations. The differences in the rate of hypoglycemia were more pronounced in nocturnal period and maintenance period and in T2D than T1D patients. Degludec reduced the incidence of severe hypoglycemia in T2D [ERR 0.65; (0.52; 0.89); P = 0.005] but not T1D patients. HbA1c concentration was slightly higher in degludec over glargine but was not clinically relevant [estimated treatment difference (ETD) 0.03; 95% CI − 0.00 to 0.06%; P = 0.06]. Fasting plasma glucose level was lower in degludec-treated patients (ETD − 0.28 mmol/L; 95% CI − 0.44 to − 0.11 mmol/L; P = 0.001). Several subgroup analyses showed largely consistent findings. Background: To investigate the mechanism of lentiviral vector carrying methioninase enhances the sensitivity of drug-resistant gastric cancer cells to Cisplatin.Methods: Death receptors, anti-apoptotic protein, NF-κB, and TRAIL pathway-related factors were detected. The influence of LV-METase transfection on cell viability and pathway-related proteins were assessed by MTT method and western blot, respectively. Moreover, the connection between miR-21 and NF-κB or caspase-8 was determined by Chip and luciferase assay, respectively. LV-METase transfection drug-resistant gastric cancer cells were injected subcutaneously into mice.Results: The expression of free MET, miR-21-5p, MDR1, P-gp, and DR5 was significantly increased in drug-resistant gastric cancer cell lines. When cells were transfected with LV-METase, intracellular TRAIL signalling was activated while NF-κB pathway was inhibited. Besides, enhanced TRAIL signalling or repressed NF-κB pathway can promote the sensitivity of drug-resistant strains to Cisplatin, and the combination shows more sensitive to sensitisation. LV-METase promoted TRAIL expression by reducing NF-κB, thereby contributing to the downregulation of P-gp and enhancing the susceptibility of drug-resistant gastric cancer cells to Cisplatin. Furthermore, miR-21 regulated by NF-κB mediated the expression of P-gp protein via inhibiting caspase-8, thus regulating Cisplatin-induced cell death.Conclusions: Our results suggest that LV-METase has potential as a therapeutic agent for gastric cancer treatment. Cerebral amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) accumulation resulting from an imbalance between Aβ production and clearance is one of the most important causes in the formation of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In order to preserve the maintenance of Aβ homeostasis and have a notable AD therapy, achieving a method to clear up Aβ plaques becomes an emerging task. Herein, we describe a self-destructive nanosweeper based on multifunctional peptide-polymers that is capable of capturing and clearing Aβ for the effective treatment of AD. The nanosweeper recognize and bind Aβ via co-assembly through hydrogen bonding interactions. The Aβ-loaded nanosweeper enters cells and upregulates autophagy thus promoting the degradation of Aβ. As a result, the nanosweeper decreases the cytotoxicity of Aβ and rescues memory deficits of AD transgenic mice. A three-layer Ta2O5-containing coating was successfully fabricated by laser cladding on a pure Ta substrate. The maximum thickness of such a coating is about 1.6 mm. The microstructure, phase constitution and elemental distribution in the coating were investigated. Results show that the coating has been metallurgically bonded to the Ta substrate and the microstructure exhibits a graded change along the deposition direction from Ta substrate to the top of coating. In the layers I and II of the graded coating, the microstructure evolution can be confirmed as a result of hypomonotectic reaction, but in the layer III it was formed by hypermonotectic reaction. At the top of coating, the microstructure was still homogeneous although liquid phase separation had occurred, which can be attributed to the fact that the O-rich droplets do not have enough time to float at high cooling rate. The theoretical calculation results show that during laser cladding, the solidification time of the melt pool was less than 0.1 s, which fits well with the results from the experiment. The existing noise in video/image will not only reduce visual quality, but also will adversely affect the subsequent processing as compression, encoding, transmission and storage. Hence, the denoising technology for video/image is significant in the whole media industry. In this paper, a maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding for KMV-Cast pseudo-analog video transmission has been proposed to further eliminate the residual noise in the received video/image. First, a noise decomposition model based on multidimensional plane has been proposed. Then, the residual noise in KMV-Cast scheme has been shown to obey Gaussian distribution. Finally, the estimation of the residual noise has been derived for the purpose of maximizing the PSNR of the reconstructed video/image. Recently, a novel scheme called Knowledge-enhanced Mobile Video Broadcasting (KMV-Cast) was proposed to improve the quality of mobile video transmission. In this paper, we propose to use the well-known block-matching and three dimensional filtering (BM3D) algorithm to remove noise for KMV-Cast. BM3D is realized by block-matching, collaborative filtering, aggregation, and Wiener filtering. In this paper, BM3D will be used to remove noise after videos/images reconstruction using KMV-Cast receiver. The block-matching is used to collect similar pixel groups to reveal the property of the patch, while the collaborative filtering preserves the unique feature of each block through hard-thresholding. The aggregation process performs averaging to get the estimation results. The simulation results show that KMV-Cast with BM3D denoising performs the best compared with other two algorithms including SoftCast and KMV-Cast, especially in case of low channel quality and all image blocks are needed to be transmitted. The proposed scheme has 9 dB gains in terms of PSNR under low channel SNR (-5 dB) compared with the conventional KMV-Cast scheme, when all image blocks are transmitted through additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. It remains unclear if the developmental trajectories of a specific inflammatory biomarker during the acute phase of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) provide outcome prediction. By applying latent class growth modeling (LCGM), we identified three distinctive trajectories of CD14++CD16+ monocytes using serial flow cytometry assays from day 1 to day 7 of symptom onset in 96 de novo STEMI patients underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Membership in the high-hump-shaped trajectory (16.8%) independently predicted adverse cardiovascular outcomes during a median follow-up of 2.5 years. Moreover, inclusion of CD14++CD16+ monocyte trajectories significantly improved area under the curve (AUC) when added to left ventricular ejection fraction-based prediction model (ΔAUC = 0.093, P = 0.013). Therefore, CD14++CD16+ monocyte trajectories during STEMI hospitalization are a novel risk factor for post-STEMI adverse outcomes. These results provide the first proof-of-principle evidence in support of the risk stratification role of LCGM-based longitudinal modeling of specific inflammatory markers during acute STEMI. Interleukin-15 (IL-15) is essential for the development and maintenance of natural killer (NK) cells. IL-15 activates STAT5 proteins, which can form dimers or tetramers. We previously found that NK cell numbers are decreased in Stat5a−Stat5b tetramer-deficient double knockin (DKI) mice, but the mechanism was not investigated. Here we show that STAT5 dimers are sufficient for NK cell development, whereas STAT5 tetramers mediate NK cell maturation and the expression of maturation-associated genes. Unlike the defective proliferation of Stat5 DKI CD8+ T cells, Stat5 DKI NK cells have normal proliferation to IL-15 but are susceptible to death upon cytokine withdrawal, with lower Bcl2 and increased active caspases. These findings underscore the importance of STAT5 tetramers in maintaining NK cell homoeostasis. Objective: To assess the methodological quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses regarding acupuncture intervention for stroke and the primary studies within them. Methods: Two researchers searched PubMed, Cumulative index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, ISI Web of Knowledge, Cochrane, Allied and Complementary Medicine, Ovid Medline, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and Traditional Chinese Medical Database to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses about acupuncture for stroke published from the inception to December 2016. Review characteristics and the criteria for assessing the primary studies within reviews were extracted. The methodological quality of the reviews was assessed using adapted Oxman and Guyatt Scale. The methodological quality of primary studies was also assessed. Results: Thirty-two eligible reviews were identified, 15 in English and 17 in Chinese. The English reviews were scored higher than the Chinese reviews ( P=0.025), especially in criteria for avoiding bias and the scope of search. All reviews used the quality criteria to evaluate the methodological quality of primary studies, but some criteria were not comprehensive. The primary studies, in particular the Chinese reviews, had problems with randomization, allocation concealment, blinding, dropouts and withdrawals, intent-to-treat analysis and adverse events. Conclusions: Important methodological flaws were found in Chinese systematic reviews and primary studies. Esophageal squamous dysplasia is believed to be the precursor lesion of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC); however, the genetic evolution from dysplasia to ESCC remains poorly understood. Here, we applied multi-region whole-exome sequencing to samples from two cohorts, 45 ESCC patients with matched dysplasia and carcinoma samples, and 13 tumor-free patients with only dysplasia samples. Our analysis reveals that dysplasia is heavily mutated and harbors most of the driver events reported in ESCC. Moreover, dysplasia is polyclonal, and remarkable heterogeneity is often observed between tumors and their neighboring dysplasia samples. Notably, copy number alterations are prevalent in dysplasia and persist during the ESCC progression, which is distinct from the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The sharp contrast in the prevalence of the ‘two-hit’ event on TP53 between the two cohorts suggests that the complete inactivation of TP53 is essential in promoting the development of ESCC. Coal and gas outburst disasters in coal seams are becoming more serious as coal mines extend deeper underground in China. Furthermore, the protective coal seam mining technology featured by economic efficiency has been proven to be the most effective and widely applied method for the prevention of coal and gas outburst disasters. However, the determinations of the protective area coal and gas outburst prevention in a pressure-relief boundary area are fundamental issues that research should be focused on. The technical method for determining stress distribution in pressure-relief boundary area during protective coal seam mining is put forward in this paper. The method is based on a stress-seepage coupled relationship within a gas-containing coal seam. The method includes complex lab experiments and on-site measurements at the Qingdong Coal Mine. The final data illustrate that the permeability and vertical stress in the pressure-relief boundary area of the coal sample form a negative exponential function relationship. Additionally, the permeability of the coal sample within the abovementioned area is significantly different compared with that located at the center of the pressure-relief area. In the pressure-relief boundary area, the gas pressure distribution gradient is 0.0375 MPa/m, while the vertical stress distribution gradient registers 0.56 MPa/m. Under this condition, coal and gas outburst disasters are prone to be triggered. Therefore, effective precautions against coal and gas outburst disasters can be put forward in accordance with stress distribution characteristics within the abovementioned 'boundary area.' BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a deadly disease, and the molecular mechanism of PAH has not been clarified clearly. The objective of this study was to identify possible biomarkers and explore the potential mechanisms of Schistosoma-induced PAH. METHODS: GSE49114 RNA-Seq data developed from mouse whole lung tissues were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between control samples and schistosomiasis-induced PAH samples were identified by the edgeR software. Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway enrichment analysis of DEGs were performed, followed by metabolic pathway network construction. Moreover, pathways with higher connectivity degrees in the metabolic pathway network were identified. RESULTS: Totally, 877 up- and 520 downregulated DEGs were screened. The upregulated DEGs such as IL-4 (Interleukin-4) were significantly related with immune system process, transmembrane signaling receptor activity, and signal transducer activity. Downregulated DEGs (i.e., Smad9 (SMAD family member 9), BMPR2 (bone morphogenetic protein type 2 receptor), and Eng (endoglin)) were significantly enriched in signal transducer activity, growth factor binding, and signal transduction. The top 10 metabolic pathways with highest connectivity degree were screened, including leishmaniasis (degree = 26), antigen processing and presentation (degree = 20), hematopoietic cell lineage (degree = 20), chemokine signaling pathway (degree = 18), and JAK-STAT signaling pathway (degree = 18). CONCLUSIONS: Smad9, BMPR2, Eng and IL4, and their relative functions such as signal transduction, signal transducer activity, and immune system process might play important roles in schistosomiasis-induced PAH. Using transient hot disk technique to measure the thermal conductivity of liquids, the sensor is traditionally placed in the vertical orientation. In this study, the horizontal orientation method was analyzed. Effects of convection were studied and compared when using both the vertical and the horizontal orientation transient hot disk methods to measure the thermal conductivities of liquids. The temperature field and the velocity field of the testing fluid in both methods were obtained when numerical simulations were utilized to get quantified results of convection effects. Moreover, experiments were executed to validate the numerical simulation settings. The velocity magnitude and the Rayleigh number distribution were monitored in the direction which was perpendicular to the sensor face. It was found that the horizontal method had a lower maximum velocity and convection intensity. Besides, the testing region which was affected by heating process was smaller in horizontal method. The temperature distribution in horizontal orientation method showed asymmetry around the sensor face, the heat transfer ability of up face was higher than the down face. Meanwhile, the flow intensity in the horizontal orientation method grew faster than the vertical orientation method with long testing time. Judging from the average temperature rise of the sensor and the flow intensity in the fluid region, it is proposed that the horizontal orientation method is a better way for thermal conductivity measurements of liquids when testing time is not too long. Experiments were performed to measure the thermal conductivities of water, ethanol and glycol in both vertical and horizontal methods. It was found that the thermal conductivities measured in horizontal method were more accurate than the vertical method for all three liquid samples compared with the values in the literature. Currently, there are increasing debates on the necessity of health instruments in Chinese medicine (CM) emerging in China. This study aims to reevaluate its status and values. Analyzing the causes, limits, advantages, and properties characters of health instruments in CM, it is found that weak fundamental research, incomplete self-awareness, and complicated social factors are the primary causes of debates. A comprehensive analysis showed health instruments in CM have health evaluation benefits to people from a dominant Chinese culture, meet the requirements of cultural background, and bring long-term value to Chinese instrument researches. However, its values and status should be treated differently depending on various subtypes. Although little theoretical and practical evidences proved that patients-reported health instruments in CM should be proposed independently, the doctors- and nurses-reported questionnaires are necessary. With this in mind, the study group proposes the 'Chinese cultural instruments (CCIs)' and 'health-related CCIs'. The latter one aims to evaluate the health status of people in a dominant Chinese culture. The CCIs theory represents Chinese instrument researches on a larger regional and higher level, and resolves the debates on instruments between CM and Western medicine in China. Health instruments in CM bring more scientific and social benefits for Chinese instrument researches. However, it does not include cultural demands, and lacks scientific significance. CCIs have all its virtues, and add solutions to the latter's theory bottleneck and scientific debates, thus bringing increased benefits to clinical assessment in complementary and alternative medicine researches. Histamine is a powerful modulator that regulates blood vessels and blood flow. The effect of histamine on the extracortical vessels has been well described, while much less is known about the effect of histamine on intracortical vessels. In this study, we investigated the effect of histamine on regional cerebral blood flow in rat parietal lobe with laser Doppler flowmetry. The pharmacological characteristics of distinct ways (intracerebroventricular injection, intraperitoneal injection, and cranial window infusion) in applying histamine to the brain were also obtained and compared. Histamine applied in three ways all produced a decrease of rCBF in parietal lobe in a concentration-dependent manner. Cranial window infusion was the most effective way and intraperitoneal injection of L-histidine was the most ineffective, although it is a simple and applied way. To determine which type of receptor takes part in the vessel contraction induced by histamine, H1 receptor antagonist, diphenhydramine, and H2 receptor antagonist, cimetidine, were applied, respectively, before histamine administration. When the injection of cimetidine was conducted in advance, histamine still resulted in a decrease of infusion amount; while the injection of diphenhydramine was conducted in advance, the infusion of blood amount wasn't changed. These findings indicated that histamine could result in a reduction of rCBF in the rat parietal lobe and this effect of histamine may attribute partly to its combination with H1 receptor.
