Identifying the microstructural characteristics of volcanic ash particles is key in developing our understanding of their production, transport and impact. Volcanic glass in ash clouds can damage aircraft engines, surfaces and coatings, and if inhaled cause harm to humans and animals on which they depend. We present results of 3D imaging of volcanic glass particles from two Icelandic volcanoes together with two samples of experimentally vesiculated volcanic glass. True colour 3D images were obtained using an Olympus LEXT 3D laser scanning confocal microscope. The images enabled examination of bubble structure, fracture patterns, and shape morphology characteristics of grains. For the two simulated fragments, the bubbles had a median long axis lengths of 13.2 and 37.0 μm. For the material from Grimsvötn and Eyjafjallajökul volcanic eruptions, the median long axis length was 25.2 μm and 23.1 μm, respectively. Laser confocal microscopy-based 3D imaging of volcanic glass fragments provides a rapid, non-destructive way to assess 3D particle geometry and quantify internal artefacts responsible for their formation. The study of cancer cell motility is considered to be important in understanding cancer metastasis. The movement behaviour of cells within clustered cell colonies is of particular interest. Changes in cell movement, area and velocity can be an indicator of cell spreading. The aim of the study is to develop and apply a computerised interactive image processing system to quantify the movement of cells within cell clusters. A semi-automatic boundary description method based on two-dimensional rendering is devised. The system is later combined with image-processing methods that facilitate the relocation of the cell boundary over time; this forms a new approach to assessing cell movement. These methods are incorporated into a software system, enabling an interactive procedure to define and monitor the movement of single cells in cell clusters from digitised microscope images. Validation of the method shows a maximum error of 10% in defining the area through a cubic spline interpolation. The system is applied to analyse the movement and area of HT115 human colon cancer cells. The system provides tools for the analysis of movement, area and velocity of single cells in cancer cell colonies and may thus be of value in further understanding cancer cell motility. Compression therapy is the principal treatment for leg ulcers associated with venous disease. The efficacy of compression therapy can be variable, which may in part be owing to the degree of compression applied. However, if the mechanism of action of this treatment could be better understood, it might be possible to improve its efficacy. It is not clear whether assessment of the degree of compression should be made under static or dynamic conditions, or both. A review of methods used previously suggests the need for a new method of assessment allowing continuous monitoring, even during movement. A system for continuous static and dynamic measurements of compression is described. Using an air chamber and manometer to test the system, agreement within +/- 3 mmHg is observed. The system is applied to investigate changes in forces, expressed as pressure, under bandages and compression stockings. Application of five bandage systems by experienced nurses to a volunteer shows a marked variation in applied pressure. During short periods of walking, rapid changes in pressure under compression stockings are observed, including some transients of less than 0.25 s. Background: The human mandible is variable in shape, size and position and any deviation from normal can affect the facial appearance and dental occlusion., Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine whether the Sassouni cephalometric analysis could help predict two-dimensional mandibular shape in humans using cephalometric planes and landmarks., Materials and Methods: A retrospective computerised analysis of 100 lateral cephalometric radiographs taken at Kingston Hospital Orthodontic Department was carried out., Results: Results showed that the Euclidean straight-line mean difference between the estimated position of gonion and traced position of gonion was 7.89 mm and the Euclidean straight-line mean difference between the estimated position of pogonion and the traced position of pogonion was 11.15 mm. The length of the anterior cranial base as measured by sella-nasion was positively correlated with the length of the mandibular body gonion-menton, r = 0.381 and regression analysis showed the length of the anterior cranial base sella-nasion could be predictive of the length of the mandibular body gonion-menton by the equation 22.65 + 0.5426x, where x = length of the anterior cranial base (SN). There was a significant association with convex shaped palates and oblique shaped mandibles, p = 0.0004., Conclusions: The method described in this study can be used to help estimate the position of cephalometric points gonion and pogonion and thereby sagittal mandibular length. This method is more accurate in skeletal class I cases and therefore has potential applications in craniofacial anthropology and the 'missing mandible' problem in forensic and archaeological reconstruction.

Background: To test the hypothesis that in profile smiling view, for ideal aesthetics, a tangent to the labial face of the maxillary central incisor crowns should be approximately parallel to the true vertical line and thereby perpendicular to the true horizontal line., Methods: An idealized female image was created with computer software and manipulated using the same software to construct an "ideal" female profile image with proportions, and linear and angular soft tissue measurements, based on currently accepted criteria for idealized Caucasian profiles. The maxillary incisor labial face tangent was altered in 5° increments from 70 to 120°, creating a range of images, shown in random order to 70 observers (56 lay people and 14 clinicians), who ranked the images from the most to the least attractive. The main outcome was the preference ranks of image attractiveness given by the observers., Results: The most attractive inclination of a tangent to the labial face of the maxillary incisor crowns in profile view in relation to the true horizontal line was 85°, i.e. 5° retroclined from a perpendicular 90° inclination. The most attractive range appears to be between 80 and 90°. Excessive proclination appeared to be less desirable than retroclination. Background: There is no normative craniofacial anthropometric data for the Kenyan-African population. The purpose of this investigation was to determine normative anthropometric craniofacial measurements and proportional relationships for Kenyans of African descent and to compare the data with African Americans (AA), North American Whites (NAW), and neoclassical canons., Methods: Twenty-five direct facial anthropometric measurements, and 4 angular measurements, were taken on 72 Kenyan-African participants (age range 18-30 years) recruited at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. The data were compared with AA and NAW populations, and neoclassical canons. Descriptive statistics of the variables were computed for the study population., Results: Significant differences between both Kenyan males and females were detected in forehead height (~ 5 mm greater for males, ~ 4.5 mm for females), nasal height (reduced by ~ 4 mm in males, ~ 3 mm in females), nasal width (8-9 mm greater), upper lip height (> 3 mm), and eye width (greater by ~ 3 mm) compared to NAW subjects. All vertical measurements obtained were significantly different compared with NAW. Differences were observed in comparison with AA subjects, but less marked. Mouth width was similar in all groups. Angular measurements were variable. Neoclassical canons did not apply to the Kenyan population., Conclusions: Anthropometric measurements of NAW showed clear differences when compared with the Kenyan population, and variations exist with comparative AA data. Background: In the absence of clear guidelines for facial aesthetic surgery, most surgeons rely on expert intuitive judgement when planning aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. One of the most famous theories regarding "ideal" facial proportions is that of the golden proportion. However, there are conflicting opinions as to whether it can be used to assess facial attractiveness. The aim of this investigation was to assess facial ratios of professional black models and to compare the ratios with the golden proportion., Methods: Forty photographs of male and female professional black models were collected. Observers were asked to assign a score from 1 to 10 (1 = not very attractive, 10 = very attractive). A total of 287 responses were analysed for grading behaviour according to various demographic factors by two groups of observers. The best graded photographs were compared with the least well-graded photographs to identify any differences in their facial ratios. The models' facial ratios were calculated and compared with the golden proportion., Results: Differences in grading behaviour were observed amongst the two assessment groups. Only one out of the 12 facial ratios was not significantly different from the golden proportion., Conclusions: Only one facial ratio was observed to be similar to the golden proportion in professional model facial photographs. No correlation was found between facial ratios in professional black models with the golden proportion. Background: The aim of this study is to validate a new three-dimensional craniofacial stereophotogrammetry imaging system (3dMDface) through comparison with manual facial surface anthropometry. The null hypothesis was that there is no difference between craniofacial measurements using anthropometry vs. the 3dMDface system., Methods: Facial images using the new 3dMDface system were taken from six randomly selected subjects, sitting in natural head position, on six separate occasions each 1 week apart, repeated twice at each sitting. Exclusion criteria were excess facial hair, facial piercings and undergoing current dentofacial treatment. 3dMDvultus software allowed facial landmarks to be marked and measurements recorded. The same measurements were taken using manual anthropometry, using soluble eyeliner to pinpoint landmarks, and sliding and spreading callipers and measuring tape to measure distances. The setting for the investigation was a dental teaching hospital and regional (secondary and tertiary care) cleft centre. The main outcome measure was comparison of the craniofacial measurements using the two aforementioned techniques., Results: The results showed good agreement between craniofacial measurements using the 3dMDface system compared with manual anthropometry. For all measurements, except chin height and labial fissure width, there was a greater variability with the manual method compared to 3D assessment. Overall, there was a significantly greater variability in manual compared with 3D assessments ( p  < 0.02)., Conclusions: The 3dMDface system is validated for craniofacial measurements.

Background: This study is a quantitative evaluation of the influence of the mentolabial angle on perceived attractiveness and threshold values of desire for surgery., Methods: The mentolabial angle of an idealized silhouette male Caucasian profile image was altered incrementally between 84° and 162°. Images were rated on a Likert scale by pretreatment orthognathic patients ( n  = 75), lay people ( n  = 75) and clinicians ( n  = 35)., Results: A mentolabial angle of approximately 107° to 118° was deemed the most attractive, with a range of up to 140° deemed acceptable. Angles above or below this range were perceived as unattractive, and anything outside the range of below 98° or above 162° was deemed very unattractive. A deep mentolabial angle (84°) or an almost flat angle (162°) was deemed the least attractive. In terms of threshold values of desire for surgery, for all groups, a threshold value of ≥162° and ≤84° indicated a preference for surgery, although clinicians were least likely to suggest surgery. The clinician group was the most consistent, and for many of the images, there was some variation in agreement between clinicians and lay people as to whether surgery is required. There was even more variability in the assessments for the patient group., Conclusions: It is recommended that in orthognathic and genioplasty planning, the range of normal variability of the mentolabial angle, in terms of observer acceptance, is taken into account as well as threshold values of desire for surgery. The importance of using patients as observers in attractiveness research is stressed.
