Starting from the Skyrme interaction $f_{-}$ together with the density-dependent pairing interaction, we study the g factors for the $2_{1,2}^{+}$ excitations of Sr and Zr. The coupling between one- and two-phonon terms in the wave functions of excited states is taken into account within the finite-rank separable approximation. Using the same set of parameters we describe available experimental data and give the prediction for Sr, $g(2_{2}^{+})=+0.03$ in comparison to $ +0.31$ in the case of Zr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on an auditory model, the zero-crossings with maximal Teager energy operator (ZCMT) feature extraction approach was described, and then applied to speech and emotion recognition. Three kinds of experiments were carried out. The first kind consists of isolated word recognition experiments in neutral (non-emotional) speech. The results show that the ZCMT approach effectively improves the recognition accuracy by 3.47% in average compared with the Teager energy operator (TEO). Thus, ZCMT feature can be considered as a noise-robust feature for speech recognition. The second kind consists of mono-lingual emotion recognition experiments by using the Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) and the Berlin databases. As the average recognition rate of ZCMT approach is 82.19%, the results indicate that the ZCMT features can characterize speech emotions in an effective way. The third kind consists of cross-lingual experiments with three languages. As the accuracy of ZCMT approach only reduced by 1.45%, the results indicate that the ZCMT features can characterize emotions in a language independent way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The low-spin excitations of the nucleus Sm which is just two neutrons and two protons away from the N = 82 shell and Z = 64 subshell closures have been investigated by means of the Nd ( α, n) and Nd ( α, 2 n) fusion-evaporation reactions. We established 47 hitherto unknown energy levels up to 4.7MeV and 75 new transitions. In addition, 7 spin assignments were possible from the γ-γ angular correlation analysis. The structure of the possible candidates for a 2 ⊗ 3 quadrupole-octupole multiplet are first discussed in terms of the harmonic vibrational model. A comparison of these states with the corresponding ones in the neighboring N = 84 isotones is also presented. Finally, the structure of the Sm nucleus is interpreted in terms of the IBA- spdf model. It is shown that the model is able to reproduce the experimental relative transition strengths of the 2 ⊗ 3 quadrupole-octupole multiplet and also a series of collective properties such as the proposed double-octupole excitations. Both theoretical descriptions of nuclei and experimental techniques for measuring magnetic moments have become very sophisticated. Yet, in general, good agreement between calculations and measurements still eludes us. The evolution of the structure of the gamma-vibrational band head 2+ γ in well-deformed rare-earth nuclei is studied within the framework of RPA calculations using a quasiboson approximation based on the Nilsson model. The obtained evolution of the quasiparticle structure of the gamma-vibrational band head is shown to correlate well with the evolution of the same nuclei within the IBA symmetry triangle when described in the extended consistent- Q formalism. An empirical relation is presented that links the IBA parameter χ with the quasiparticle structure of the gamma-vibrational band head. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental indications for the nuclear phase transitions described by the new symmetries E(5) and X(5) are discussed for the stable Ba, Nd, and Gd isotopes. Their low-lying dipole excitations, systematically investigated at the bremsstrahlung facility of the 4.3-MV Stuttgart Dynamitron accelerator, provide indications for the phase transitional behavior, including the proposed critical point candidates.© 2004 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. Low-lying dipole excitations in the medium-weight vibrational nuclei of the Cd isotopic chain were investigated by means of nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments performed at the bremsstrahlung beam of the Stuttgart Dynamitron accelerator (endpoint energy 4.1 MeV). Detailed information has been obtained on excitation energies, spins, decay widths, and transition probabilities of numerous excited states in [sup 110-114,116]Cd. Additionally, the use of two Compton polarimeters enabled model-independent parity assignments for excitations in the even-even isotopes. Strongly excited J[sup π] = 1-states are found in all even-even Cd nuclei at excitation energies near the sum of the energies of the first 2[sup +] and 3[sup -] states. These excitations are interpreted as the 1[sup -] member of the quadrupole-octupole coupled quintuplet (2[sup +] ⊗ 3[sup -]). The fragmented strength observed in the odd isotopes [sup 111,113]Cd is compared with the strength distributions in the neighboring even-even Cd isotopes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on a male Egyptian patient who developed myasthenia gravis with typical symptoms, beneficial response to pyridostigmine, and the presence of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies and anti-striated muscle antibodies during the course of a chronic hepatitis C infection complicated by liver cirrhosis. As also reported for the herpes simplex and for the HIV virus, hepatitis C may lead to myasthenia gravis via a mechanism of cross-reactivity between viral epitopes and the acetylcholine receptor. The low-spin structure of 93Nb has been studied using the (n,n’γ) reaction at neutron energies ranging from 1.5 to 2.6MeV and the 94Zr(p, 2nγ)93Nb reaction at bombarding energies from 11.5 to 19MeV. Excitation functions, lifetimes, and branching ratios were measured, and multipolarities and spin assignments were determined. The Jπ = 3/2- and 5/2- states at 1840 and 2013keV, respectively, are identified as mixed-symmetry states associated with the $\ensuremath{(2_{1,{\rm ms}}^{+}) \otimes 2_{p_{1/2}}}$ particle-core coupling. These assignments are in agreement with energy systematics, spins and parities, and the observed strong M1 transitions to the 2 p1/2 one-phonon structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A strong rise of E0 transition strengths between the first excited 0+ state and the ground state is predicted in shape transitional regions within the Interacting Boson Model (IBM). This rise matches well existing data and is not connected to a large mixing amplitude between both states. We show that the cubic shape invariant K3, which provides a measure for triaxiality for β-rigid nuclei, can be obtained from a small number of observables.
