A candidate reference measurement procedure (RMP) for serum theophylline via isotope dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was developed. With a single-step precipitation pretreatment and a 6-min gradient elution, the method achieved baseline separation of theophylline and its analogs on a C18-packed column. A bracketing calibration method was used to ensure repeatable signal intensity and high measurement precision. The intra-assay and inter-assay imprecisions were 1.06%, 0.84%, 0.72% and 0.47%, 0.41%, 0.25% at concentrations of 4.22 µg/mL (23.40 µmol/L), 8.45 µg/mL (46.90 µmol/L), and 15.21 µg/mL (84.43 µmol/L), respectively. Recoveries ranged from 99.35 to 102.34%. The limit of detection (LoD) was 2 ng/mL, and the lowest limit of quantification (LLoQ) was 5 ng/mL. The linearity range extended from 0.47 to 60 µg/mL (2.61–333.04 µmol/L). No ion suppression and carry-over (< 0.68%) were observed. The relative bias for this candidate RMP that participated in 2023 External Quality Control for Reference Laboratories (RELA) conducted by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) was within a range of 0.17 to 0.93%. Furthermore, two clinical immunoassay systems were compared with this candidate RMP, demonstrating good correlations. The results of the Trueness Verification Plan indicate significant differences among routine systems, highlighting the need for standardization efforts. Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for treating high-salinity mine water. However, MD membranes are known to have low membrane flux and are prone to fouling. In this study, we used the cost-effective and controllable vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) technology to prepare polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes, replacing the traditional immersion precipitation method and optimizing the membrane structure by including LiCl and acetone as porogen in the casting solution. The results showed that the membrane prepared using the VIPS method exhibited a highly open interconnected porous surface. Unlike traditional MD membranes with a dense epidermal layer and large finger-like pores, these optimized membranes had a symmetrical and uniform internal structure, leading to a high flux of 8.62 kg·(m2·h)−1 during direct contact membrane distillation testing. Different porogens produced varied results on the VIPS process and varying effects on membrane structure. The use of LiCl promoted the formation of PVDF β-phase, resulting in a decrease in the number of spherical nodules on the membrane surface, as well as improved density and smoothness. Consequently, this reduced fouling risk during membrane distillation while slightly decreasing membrane flux. On the other hand, acetone rapidly evaporated during the VIPS process, facilitating pre-gelatinization and α-phase formation of PVDF. Natural minerals, such as kaolinite, halloysite, montmorillonite, attapulgite, bentonite, sepiolite, forsterite, and wollastonite, have considerable potential for use in CO2 capture and mineralization due to their abundant reserves, low cost, excellent mechanical properties, and chemical stability. Over the past decades, various methods, such as those involving heat, acid, alkali, organic amine, amino silane, and ionic liquid, have been employed to enhance the CO2 capture performance of natural minerals to attain high specific surface area, a large number of pore structures, and rich active sites. Future research on CO2 capture by natural minerals will focus on the full utilization of the properties of natural minerals, adoption of suitable modification methods, and preparation of composite materials with high specific surface area and rich active sites. In addition, we provide a summary of the principle and technical route of direct and indirect mineralization of CO2 by natural minerals. This process uses minerals with high calcium and magnesium contents, such as forsterite (Mg2SiO4), serpentine [Mg3Si2O(OH)4], and wollastonite (CaSiO3). The research status of indirect mineralization of CO2 using hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, molten salt, and ammonium salt as media is also introduced in detail. The recovery of additives and high-value-added products during the mineralization process to increase economic benefits is another focus of future research on CO2 mineralization by natural minerals. Objective: Previous studies have reported sex differences in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among adults; however, little is known about its occurrence in children and adolescents. This study aims to examine the prevalence of NAFLD among them and investigate the relationship between sex hormones and NAFLD. Method: This study included 2999 obese Chinese children aged 2–18 years. We examined the prevalence of NAFLD by sex, age, and Tanner stage. The regression model and principal component analysis were used to analyze the relationship between sex hormones and NAFLD. Results: The prevalence of NAFLD increased with age in both sexes, and the gender difference appeared before puberty. The prevalence in boys tended to stabilize at the age of 11 years, whereas girls reached their peak temporarily. NAFLD prevalence was positively associated with estradiol in boys (p = 0.011), but the opposite trend was observed in girls (p = 0.031). Testosterone levels decreased with the increase of NAFLD prevalence in boys (p < 0.001). Luteinizing hormone and prolactin were inversely associated with NAFLD prevalence in boys and girls, respectively. Results from the principal component analysis showed that sex hormone levels and fat distribution were important risk factors for the prevalence of NAFLD in obese children (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The significant difference in NAFLD prevalence between genders in obese children begins in early childhood. This distinction emerges long before puberty onset and tends to stabilize during late adolescence. We developed and evaluated two-level, namely 2017011 and 2017012, serum-based reference materials (RMs) for 17 beta-estradiol (17 β-E2) by the reference method of isotope dilution liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) from the remaining serum samples after routine clinical tests, to help improve clinical routine testing and provide the traceability of results. This paper describes the development process of these RMs. The National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) certified reference material (CRM) 6004-a was used as the primary RM for the measurement of 17 β-E2. These serum-based RMs showed satisfactory homogeneity and stability. They also assessed the commutability between the reference method and the three routine clinical immunoassay systems. Besides, a collaborative study was carried out in five reference laboratories, all of which had been accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS) in accordance with ISO/WD 15725-1. Statistical analysis of raw results and uncertainty assessment obtained certified values: 2017011 was 445.2 ± 39.0 pmol/L, and 2017012 was 761.9 ± 35.5 pmol/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sleep disorders are a common syndrome and could affect the life quality of the older adults. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the association between nutritional status and sleep quality in the Chinese community-dwelling older adults. Methods: A total of 2,878 participants ≥ 65 years old from the Yiwu Elderly Cohort were included in the study. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF). Participants were categorized as subjects with malnutrition, at risk of malnutrition or well-nourished based on their MNA-SF score. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to identify sleep disorders. PSQI score ≥ 6 was categorized as poor sleep quality. Results: Among the 2,878 participants (mean age 72.71 ± 5.79 years, 50.3% men), 31.5% (n = 906) were classified as having sleep disorders, and 25.5% were identified as malnutrition or at risk of malnutrition. We found a significantly relationship between nutritional status and sleep quality in older adults, and the results showed well-nourished decreased the risk of sleep disorders (OR = 0.32, 95% CI = 0.13, 0.75). And well-nourished status was significantly associated with less daytime dysfunction, adequate sleep duration, and good subjective sleep quality (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: There was a close association of nutritional status and sleep quality in older adults. Aims/hypothesis: The age-specific associations between type 2 diabetes and cancer risk are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to assess how age at diagnosis modifies the associations between type 2 diabetes and cancer risk. Methods: We used data from the Yinzhou Health Information System, and included 42,279 individuals who were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2014, as well as 166,010 age- and sex-matched control individuals without diabetes who were selected randomly from the electronic health records of the entire population. Patients were divided into four age groups according to age at diagnosis: <50, 50–59, 60–69 and ≥70 years. Stratified Cox proportional hazards regression models, with age as the time scale, were used to estimate the HRs and 95% CIs for the associations of type 2 diabetes with the risks of overall and site-specific cancers. Population-attributable fractions were also calculated for outcomes associated with type 2 diabetes. Results: During median follow-up periods of 9.20 and 9.32 years, we identified 15,729 incident cancer cases and 5383 cancer deaths, respectively. Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before 50 years of age had the highest relative risks of cancer incidence and mortality, with HRs (95% CI) of 1.35 (1.20, 1.52) for overall cancer incidence, 1.39 (1.11, 1.73) for gastrointestinal cancer incidence, 2.02 (1.50, 2.71) for overall cancer mortality, and 2.82 (1.91, 4.18) for gastrointestinal cancer mortality. Risk estimates decreased gradually with each decade increase in diagnostic age. The population-attributable fractions for overall cancer and gastrointestinal cancer mortality also decreased with increasing age. Conclusions/interpretation: The associations of type 2 diabetes with cancer incidence and mortality varied by age at diagnosis, with a higher relative risk among patients who were diagnosed at a younger age. With China's recent commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, anaerobic digestion and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) have emerged as promising technologies for treating nitrogenous organic wastewater. Anaerobic digestion can convert organic matter into volatile fatty acids (VFAs), methane, and other chemicals, while anammox can efficiently remove nitrogen with minimal energy consumption. This study evaluates the principles and characteristics of enhanced chemical flocculation and bioflocculation, as well as membrane separation, for capturing organic matter. Additionally, the paper evaluates the production of acids and methane from anaerobic digestion, exploring the influence of various factors and the need for control strategies. The features, challenges, and concerns of partial nitrification-anammox (PN/A) and partial denitrification-anammox (PD/A) are also outlined. Finally, an integrated system that combined organic capture, anaerobic digestion, and anammox is proposed as a sustainable and effective solution for treating nitrogenous organic wastewater and recovering energy and resources. Environmental factors, such as drinking water and diets, play an important role in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This study aimed to investigate the associations of metal elements and disinfectants in drinking water with the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and to assess whether diet influences these associations. We conducted a prospective cohort study including 22,824 participants free from IBD from the Yinzhou cohort study in the 2016–2022 period with an average follow-up of 5.24 years. The metal and disinfectant concentrations were measured in local pipeline terminal tap water samples. Cox regression models adjusted for multi-level covariates were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). During an average follow-up period of 5.24 years, 46 cases of IBD were identified. For every 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in the concentration of manganese, mercury, selenium, sulfur tetraoxide (SO4), chlorine, and nitrate nitrogen (NO3_N) were associated with a higher risk of IBD with the HRs of 1.45 (95% CI: 1.14 to 1.84), 1.51 (95% CI: 1.24–1.82), 1.29 (95% CI: 1.03–1.61), 1.52 (95% CI: 1.26–1.83), 1.26 (95% CI: 1.18–1.34), and 1.66 (95% CI: 1.32–2.09), whereas zinc and fluorine were inversely associated with IBD with the HRs of 0.42 (95% CI: 0.24 to 0.73) and 0.68 (95% CI: 0.54–0.84), respectively. Stronger associations were observed in females, higher income groups, low education groups, former drinkers, and participants who never drink tea. Diets have a moderating effect on the associations of metal and nonmetal elements with the risk of IBD. We found significant associations between exposure to metals and disinfectants and IBD. Triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC, C12H15N3O3) has featured in wastewater treatment as a refractory organic compound due to the significant production capability and negative environmental impact. TAIC degradation was enhanced when an ozone(O3)/ultraviolet(UV) process was applied compared with the application of an independent O3 process. Although 99% of TAIC could be degraded in 5 min during both processes, the O3/UV process had a 70%mineralization rate that was much higher than that of the independent O3 process (9%) in 30 min. Four possible degradation pathways were proposed based on the organic compounds of intermediate products identified during TAIC degradation through the application of independent O3 and O3/UV processes. pH impacted both the direct and indirect oxidation processes. Acidic and alkaline conditions preferred direct and indirect reactions respectively, with a pH of 9 achieving maximum Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal. Both CO32– and HCO3– decreased TOC removal, however only CO32– negatively impacted TAIC degradation. Effects of Cl– as a radical scavenger became more marked only at high concentrations (over 500 mg/L Cl–). The effect of Zn addition on the evolution of IMC at near-eutectic 50In-50Sn/Cu interfaces was investigated at 210°C. In 50In-(50-x)Sn-xZn/Cu(x = 0, 6) diffusion couples, two types of intermetallic compound layers were observed: ε-Cu3(In,Sn) adjacent to the Cu substrate and η-Cu2(In,Sn) adjacent to the solder, which were formed though a solid–solid diffusion reaction and solid–liquid reaction, respectively. The growth of ε-Cu3(In,Sn) was at the expense of η-Cu2(In,Sn). In 50In-44Sn-6Zn/Cu diffusion couple, the growth of ε-Cu3(In,Sn) was grain-boundary diffusion controlled and n (the time constant) was 0.31. But in the 50In-50Sn/Cu diffusion couple, due to the slow growth of η-Cu2(In,Sn), the time constant of ε-Cu3(In,Sn) was down to 0.19. With the addition of Zn in the 50In-50Sn/Cu couple, the diffusion of Cu was alleviated. Zn exhibited high activity and moderated the dissipation of the main atoms (In/Sn) in the solder. A candidate reference measurement procedure (RMP) based on isotope dilution coupled with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (ID–LC–MS/MS) was developed and validated for the quantification of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP) in human plasma. 17-OHP spiked with a deuterium-labeled internal standard was extracted from plasma by liquid–liquid extraction with 1 mL n-hexane/ethyl acetate (3:2, v/v). Reversed-phase chromatography and positive electrospray ionization were used in the ID–LC–MS/MS. Gradient elution coupled with use of a C18-packed ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography column allowed complete baseline resolution of 17-OHP from its structural analogue desoxycorticosterone in 6 min. To determine the 17-OHP level in human plasma, a bracketing calibration method was used to give higher accuracy and precision. The limit of detection and the lower limit of the measuring interval for the candidate RMP were 2.1 pg/mL (6.4 pmol/L) and 4.6 pg/mL (13.9 pmol/L), respectively. Extraction recovery was determined to be (96.08 ± 3.03)% (n = 3). Imprecision (intra-assay and interassay) was 4.03% or less at 0.83, 15.19, 64.22, and 313.46 ng/mL (2.51, 45.97, 194.34, and 948.56 nmol/L, respectively). Recoveries ranged from 98.05% to 102.24%. When comparing our RMP results with those obtained with an established RMP via International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine external quality assessment scheme for reference laboratories in laboratory medicine (RELA) samples, we found that the biases ranged from -1.99% to 3.08% against the targets. No interference was observed, and the linear response ranged from 0.47 to 958.63 ng/mL (1.42 to 2900.90 nmol/L). Moreover, the candidate RMP was used to measure the concentration of 17-OHP in human plasma and was compared with an immunoassay using 40 plasma samples. The performance of the method meets the needs of an RMP (total coefficient of variation of 5% or less and bias of 3.08% or less). This method can be used for reference material value assignment of 17-OHP in human plasma matrix. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a mixture of multiple components, which is associated with several chronic diseases, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. We evaluated the association between daily PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 exposure and hospital visits for respiratory diseases. Hospital visits for respiratory diseases were collected from Yinzhou Health Information System database. We used generalized additive models to examine the excess relative risk (ERR) and 95% confidence interval for hospital visits for respiratory diseases associated with each 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 concentration. Non-linear exposure-response relationship between PM exposure and hospital visits for respiratory diseases was evaluated by a smooth spline. The ERRs for hospital visits for respiratory diseases associated with a 10-μg/m3 increase in the 6-day cumulative average concentration of PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 were 5.40 (95% CI 2.32, 8.57) and 6.37% (95% CI 1.84, 11.10), respectively. The findings remained stable when we adjusted other gaseous air pollution. PM2.5 and PM2.5–10 were associated with the increased visits for the acute upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, asthma, and COPD. A candidate reference measurement procedure (RMP) for measurement of unconjugated estriol in human serum has been developed and validated. The proposed method is highly reliable and uses isotope dilution coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC-MS/MS) and requires no derivatization. An appropriate amount of serum was accurately weighed and spiked with an isotopically labeled internal standard. Unconjugated estriol and its internal standard were extracted from serum matrix using liquid-liquid extraction prior to reversed-phase LC-MS/MS. Calibrator bracketing was used to give higher specificity and accuracy for assigning serum level. The accuracy of the candidate RMP was validated by split-sample comparison to established RMPs. The lowest limit of detection (LLoD) and lowest limit of quantification (LLoQ) for developed RMP was estimated to be 0.14 nmol/L and 0.35 nmol/L, respectively. Both intra- and inter-assay imprecisions were ≤2.19% at 1.39, 17.34 and 69.35 nmol/L, respectively. Recoveries were 98.54% to 100.34% and linear response ranged from 0.35 to 173.38 nmol/L. No interference was observed. Biases were 5.6% and 2.8% against the targets of RELA2015A (3.87 nmol/L) and RELA2015B (40.62 nmol/L), respectively. Moreover, the candidate RMP was successfully applied to measure level of unconjugated estriol in serum samples of pregnant women (n = 3) and compared with two immunoassays in clinical laboratory. Our developed method is simple, accurate, and can be used as a candidate RMP to determine total unconjugated estriol level in human serum. A Ti/SnO-Sb anode was prepared and used for the electrochemical oxidation of tetracycline (TC). The effects of the reaction conditions, including the current density (5-25 mA cm), the distance between anode and cathode (5-25 mm), and the initial TC concentration (5-100 mg L), on the electrochemical degradation kinetics of TC, were investigated. The degradation of TC followed pseudo-first-order kinetics ( R > 0.95). The TC degradation efficiency increased with the applied current density and decreased with the increase of the distance between anode and cathode. The TC degradation efficiency was almost the same when the initial TC concentration was less than 20 mg L but decreased when it was higher than 20 mg L. Higher total organic carbon removal efficiency was obtained with a higher applied current density. The mineralization current efficiency gradually fell with increasing applied current density. A degradation pathway was proposed for the electrochemical oxidation of TC: Radicals produced from electrochemical oxidation attack the double bonds, phenolic group, and amine group in TC, resulting in the formation of the intermediate compounds with m/ z values of 461, 477, 432, 509, 480, 448, and 525, which are then oxidized to an intermediate with m/ z value of 496. Background: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been widely used in preliminary screening for colorectal cancer (CRC). The high-risk factor questionnaire (HRFQ) and quantitative risk-assessment method (QRAM) are recommended for estimating the risk of CRC qualitatively and quantitatively in China.Aim: We aimed to prospectively compare the diagnostic values of CRC preliminary screening methods to identify which method is preferable as a screening strategy.Methods: Individuals aged 40-74 years old were enrolled in a mass CRC screening program from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2014, in Jiashan County, Zhejiang Province, China. FIT of two stool specimens at 1-week intervals was performed by laboratory personnel and face-to-face interviews were conducted by trained investigators. Screening data in the program were linked to a CRC surveillance and registry system, and CRC cases reported in the system were regarded as true patients.Results: A total of 96,043 subjects were included. The sensitivity and specificity of FIT for detecting CRC cases were 75.49% (95% CI 69.84-80.39) and 90.36% (95% CI 90.17-90.54), respectively. QRAM was more sensitive (p < 0.001) and less specific (p < 0.001) than HRFQ. The sensitivity and specificity of FIT along with HRFQ were 86.56% (95% CI 81.81-90.22) and 81.37% (95% CI 81.12-81.62), and those of FIT along with QRAM were 88.93% (95% CI 84.47-92.23) and 73.95% (95% CI 73.67-74.23).Conclusions: Our findings suggest that CRC preliminary screening with FIT and QRAM in parallel has high sensitivity and satisfactory specificity, and is a useful strategy in mass screening programs. Estrogen measurements are important in the assessment of female reproductive function and have expanding roles in other fields. A simple, accurate, highly sensitive and specific isotope-dilution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and evaluated to simultaneously measure three endogenous estrogens in serum: estrone (E), 17β-estradiol (E), and estriol (E). Chromatographic separation was achieved on a C column before electrospray ionization triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry in multiple reaction monitoring mode. The sample preparation in this assay requires no derivatization and extraction by liquid-liquid extraction. After optimization of the extraction conditions, the final extraction efficiency of E, E, and E was 83.8%, 78.9%, and 77.3% respectively. The metabolites and structural analogs that have the same molecular masses as the estrogens were separated under the optimized liquid chromatography conditions. Method validation showed satisfactory linearity over the concentration range of 20-10000 pg mL for all three estrogens ( r > 0.997). The limits of quantification were 5, 10, and 10 pg mL for E, E, and E respectively, and their recoveries ranged from 94.7% to 103.5%. The accuracy of the proposed method was further evaluated with use of certified reference materials BCR-576, BCR-577, and BCR-578 for E and 2014 International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine External Quality Assessment Scheme for Reference Laboratories in Laboratory Medicine samples for E, whose certified values were determined by reference methods. Great agreement was observed between the measured values and the certified values. Satisfactory precision (coefficients of variation less than 7.44%) was also obtained for the three estrogens. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to measure the three estrogens in serum samples of pregnant women in the second trimester and to assess the accuracy of chemiluminescent immunoassays in clinical laboratories by determination of E and unconjugated E in serum samples. Aims: Mechanisms of low cadmium (Cd) accumulations in genotypes of watercress are poorly investigated. In order to improve the understanding, genotype differences in subcellular and biochemical properties of Cd were studied. Methods: Two hydroponic experiments were conducted to compare the subcellular distribution and chemical forms of Cd in shoots and roots between low-Cd genotypes (G18 and G20) and high-Cd genotypes (G4 and G5) of watercress under Cd exposures of T1 (8.93 μmol L), T2 (44.64 μmol L) and T3 (89.29 μmol L). Results: High shoot Cd concentration exceeding 100 mg kgDW even under T1 treatment indicated a high risk of Cd pollution in watercress. Differences in subcellular distributions and chemical forms between low-Cd and high-Cd genotypes were significant under T1 and T2 treatments. Proportions of Cd in cell wall fraction were the highest in both shoots (48-62 %) and roots (40.1-83.3 %) and were higher in high-Cd group than in low-Cd group under T1 treatment, but reversed under T2 and T3 treatments. It was found that to convert Cd into insoluble phosphate precipitation and pectate- or protein-bound forms may be the primary means for reducing Cd mobility and toxicity in watercress. Genotype differences in Cd subcellular distributions responding to the Cd stresses were more significant than those in Cd chemical forms. Conclusions: The intense Cd accumulation of watercress demonstrated the necessity of adopting and breeding low-Cd cultivars to reduce Cd contamination in the crop. This research investigates the performances of RuO/ZrO-CeO in catalytic ozonation for water treatment. The results show that RuO/ZrO-CeO was active for the catalytic ozonation of oxalic acid and possessed higher stability than RuO/AlO and Ru/AC. In the catalytic ozonation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), RuO/ZrO-CeO did not enhance the DMP degradation rate but significantly improved the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate. The TOC removal in catalytic ozonation was 56% more than that in noncatalytic ozonation. However this does not mean the catalyst was very active because the contribution of catalysis to the overall TOC removal was only 30%. The adsorption of the intermediates on RuO/ZrO-CeO played an important role on the overall TOC removal while the adsorption of DMP on it was negligible. This adsorption difference was due to their different ozonation rates. In the catalytic ozonation of disinfection byproduct precursors with RuO/ZrO-CeO, the reductions of the haloacetic acid and trihalomethane formation potentials (HAAFPs and THMFPs) for the natural water samples were 38%-57% and 50%-64%, respectively. The catalyst significantly promoted the reduction of HAAFPs but insignificantly improved the reduction of THMFPs as ozone reacts fast with the THMs precursors. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate target gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Although recent studies have indicated that miR-146a is involved in the tumorigenesis of various types of malignancies, few studies have investigated its role in colorectal cancer. In the current study, we examined the expression of miR-146a in colorectal cancer tissue and adjacent normal controls using publicly available expression profiling data. We then conducted a population-based case-control study which included 554 colorectal cancer cases and 566 matched healthy controls to assess the association of a genetic variant (rs2910164) in miR-146a with colorectal cancer susceptibility. We observed decreased expression of miR-146a in rectal cancer tissue compared with adjacent normal controls ( P < 0.001). Association between miR-146a rs2910164 polymorphism and risk of colorectal cancer was detected with effect modification by alcohol drinking status ( P for interaction = 0.010). Among non-alcohol drinkers, individuals with CC/CG genotype had an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer compared with those carrying GG genotype (odds ratio (OR) = 1.63, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.07∼2.47). Our findings indicate an association between miR-146a dysregulation and colorectal cancer, and suggest that miR-146a may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis. To help reduce risks of heavy metal pollution, two pot experiments were conducted to investigate the variations, transfer potential, and stability of Cadmium (Cd) and Lead (Pb) accumulations in celery ( Apium graveolens L.) and to screen for low Cd and Pb accumulative cultivars. The maximum differences in shoot Cd concentration were 4.7-fold under low-Cd exposure and 3.3-fold under high-Cd exposure. These genotype variations in Cd accumulation are sufficiently large to help reduce Cd contamination risk in soil by using the Low-Cd-Accumulative genotypes. Cd accumulation of the Low-Cd-Accumulative genotypes is significantly positive correlated with Pb accumulation. Evidence obtained proves that Cd and Pb accumulations in celery are stable and genotype-dependent at the cultivar level. The presence of high-Pb contamination in soil promoted Cd accumulation in shoots of celery. Celery is considered a species with high risks in Cd pollution and low risks in Pb pollution. Among the tested cultivars, cv. Shuanggangkangbing (SGKB) had the lowest shoot Cd and Pb accumulating abilities, and thus is the most important material for breeding of pollution-safe cultivars (PSCs) to minimize Cd and Pb accumulations in celery.
