Whether playing video games with prosocial content has an influence on empathy among players remains contentious in the research literature. Some evidence suggests playing cooperatively with other gamers enhances empathy, but data have not conclusively linked prosocial content with empathy. Further, mechanisms of this potential relationship are unclear, and little work has been conducted on how cognitive skills, such as fluid reasoning, may mediate this relationship. The current study examines these relationships with a large sample of 3034 youth (27.2% female, Mage = 11.2; range 8–17 at time 1) in Singapore. Data were considered longitudinally across two years in three waves. Ultimately, no evidence emerged that prosocial content in video games had any impact on empathy related outcomes, nor was fluid reasoning a mediator variable for any relationship. However, variables such as social competence and depression and anxiety symptoms were highly related to empathy measures. This evidence adds to the growing debate in the field that video games may not dramatically alter, whether positively or negatively, the development of emotional and behavioral outcomes for youth. We report on large ab initio calculation for the $4s^2$- 4s4p transitions in the Zinc-like sequence, using the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. Results for fine-structure energy levels, the wavelengths, transition rates and lifetimes between Z = 70 (Yb) and Z= 92 (U) are presented and compared with other theories and experiments. The calculated values including core-valence correlation are found to be similar and to compare very well with other theories and experiments values. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Dispositional Flow Scale-2 (DFS-2; Jackson and Eklund in Journal of Sports and Exercise Psychology, 24:133-150, ). One thousand five hundred and seventy-eight secondary school students (One thousand and seventy four males, four hundred and eleven females, ninety-three missing) from six schools in Singapore completed the questionnaires. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate the factorial structure of the DFS-2. A nine-first-order factor model was compared to a higher order model with a global flow factor. Support was found for the higher order factor. Multigroup analysis demonstrated invariance of the factor forms, factor loadings, factor variances, and factor covariances across age and sex. The DFS-2 subscales were found to have acceptable reliability estimates, and convergent validity. We conclude that DFS-2 is a valid instrument for assessing global flow experience in Internet gaming. The present study employed constructs from self-determination theory, social-identity theory, and the theory of planned behaviour to examine the combined effects that social identity and perceived autonomy support exerted on attitudes, intentions and health behaviour. A prospective design was employed measuring constructs from the theory of planned behaviour, group norms, group identification, and perceived autonomy support at baseline and physical activity behaviour 5 weeks later. Self-report questionnaires were administered to 231 pupils (male = 113, female = 118, M = 14.21 years, SD = .90). Hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated that group norms predicted participation in physical activities and attitudes, but only for participants who identified strongly with their group. Perceived autonomy support predicted attitudes, intentions and behaviour. The effects of perceived autonomy support and social-identity constructs were independent. It was concluded that both social identity and perceived autonomy support should be included in the theory of planned behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective:Obese patients with schizophrenia being treated with clozapine and non-psychiatric obese are often assumed to share the same physiological changes in obesity. The aim of this study was to identify possible metabolic and hormonal differences between non-psychiatric obese subjects (OB) and obese patients with schizophrenia being treated with clozapine (OSC).Subjects:Fifty-one normal healthy subjects (Nor, body mass index (BMI):23.2±0.3), 50 OB (BMI:31.7±0.7) and 71 OSC (BMI:30.4±0.5).Measurements:Anthropometric, metabolic and hormonal parameters were determined by anthropometry, enzyme autoanalyzer, immunoassay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results:Triglyceride, total cholesterol divided by high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (TC/HDL) and leptin levels were significantly higher whereas the HDL and the molar ratio of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-3 levels were significantly lower in both OB and OSC groups than those in the Nor group. Compared to normal subjects, insulin and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index levels were significantly higher in OSC, and, in OSC, insulin sensitivity and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 were significantly lower. Although the anthropometric parameters in the OB and OSC groups were similar, in the OSC group the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), insulin levels and HOMA index were significantly higher, while insulin sensitivity, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, TC/HDL, LDL/HDL, IGF-1 and IGF-1/IGFBP-3 molar ratio were lower, than those of the OB group.Conclusion:Insulin homeostasis and lipid profiles in clozapine-treated schizophrenic obesity were different from those in non-psychiatric obesity with similar anthropometric parameters, body weight and BMI. Among the three groups, the highest fasting insulin, the lowest insulin sensitivity and the highest HOMA index occurred in the OSC group. Increased α-synuclein expression may be involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease (PD). We investigated the association of Rep1 microsatellite and RsaI T-to-C substitution in the α-synuclein promoter region with the risk of PD by a case-control study. The RsaI C/C genotype and C allele were found less frequently in PD patients than in controls. A reduced risk of the Rep1- RsaI 0-C haplotype (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.36–0.90) with PD was evident. The quantitative real-time PCR study showed that the α-synuclein mRNA expression was increased (although not significantly) in PD patients with RsaI T/T genotype or Rep1- RsaI 0-T haplotype as compared to T/C genotype or 0-C haplotype. Reporter constructs containing the RsaI C allele drove significantly lower transcriptional activity compared with the RsaI T allele in both IMR32 and 293 cells. We have constructed a genetic linkage map for Nicotiana plumbaginifolia/Nicotiana longiflora (2n= 2x=20), based on the segregation of 69 RFLP and 102 RAPD loci in 99 F2 plants from the cross N. plumbaginifolia×N. longiflora. The map consists of nine major linkage groups, each containing more than nine marker loci, and spans 1062 cM. Twenty of the RFLP markers were mapped previously to Nicotiana sylvestris (2n=2x=24) chromosomes using monosomic alien addition lines. Taxonomically, N. plumbaginifolia and N. sylvestris belong to the same section, namely the Alatae; however, cytogenetic evidence indicates that they are not closely related. Comparison of the distribution of markers common to both maps suggests that genome reorganization has occurred during the evolution of these two species. Evidence is also presented that genome reorganization may be accompanied by gain and loss of specific classes of DNA sequences in their genomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the conductance of a square quantum dot, modeling the potential with a self-consistent Thomas-Fermi approximation. The resulting potential is characterized by level statistics indicative of mixed chaotic and regular electron dynamics within the dot in spite of the regular geometry of the gates defining the dot. We calculate numerically, for the case of a quantum dot with soft confinement, the weak localization (WL) correction. We demonstrate that this confining potential may generate either Lorentzian or linear lineshapes depending on the number of modes in the leads. Finally, we present experimental WL data for a lithographically square dot and compare the results with numerical calculations. We analyze the experimental results and numerical simulations in terms of semiclassical and random matrix theory (RMT) predictions and discuss their limitations as far as real experimental structures are concerned. Our results indicate that direct application of the above predictions to distinguish between chaotic and regular dynamics in a particular cavity can not always lead to reliable conclusions as the shape and magnitude of the WL correction can be strongly sensitive to the geometry-specific, non-universal features of the system. Higher-order approximation techniques for estimating stochastic parameter of the non-homogeneous Poisson (NHP) model are presented. The NHP model is characterized by a two-parameter cumulative probability distribution function (CDF) of sediment displacement. Those two parameters are the temporal and spatial intensity functions, physically representing the inverse of the average rest period and step length of sediment particles, respectively. Difficulty of estimating the parameters has, however, restricted the applications of the NHP model. The approximation techniques are proposed to address such problem. The basic idea of the method is to approximate a model involving stochastic parameters by Taylor series expansion. The expansion preserves certain higher-order terms of interest. Using the experimental (laboratory or field) data, one can determine the model parameters through a system of equations that are simplified by the approximation technique. The parameters so determined are used to predict the cumulative distribution of sediment displacement. The second-order approximation leads to a significant reduction of the CDF error (of the order of 47%) compared to the first-order approximation. Error analysis is performed to evaluate the accuracy of the first- and second-order approximations with respect to the experimental data. The higher-order approximations provide better estimations of the sediment transport and deposition that are critical factors for such environment as spawning gravel-bed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A sesquidiploid hybrid (PPS, 2 n=32) between Nicotiana plumbaginifolia (PP, 2 n=20) and N. sylvestris (SS, 2 n=24) was backcrossed to N. plumbaginifolia to produce monosomic alien addition lines. A total of 89 2 n=21 plants, each containing two sets of N. plumbaginifolia chromosomes and a single N. sylvestris chromosome, were obtained in the BC1 and BC2 generations. These plants were classified into 12 groups based on morphological characteristics. The N. sylvestris chromosomes in these plants were identified by RFLP and karyotype analyses. Among the 84 probes tested, 20 could not detect N. sylvestris-specific DNA bands, and the remaining 64 were assigned to 9 normal and 6 aberrant synteny groups. The 9 normal synteny groups corresponded to chromosomes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12, respectively. Four aberrant synteny groups were the result of chromosome translocations, and 2 were deletions. The appearance of ectopic pancreas on computed tomography (CT) is described in a 47-year-old man with bowel obstruction. The enhancement pattern of ectopic pancreas after intravenous iodine contrast administration is the same as that of leiomyoma or carcinoid.
