Thermo-mineral springs are specific ecosystems with extreme environmental conditions that constitute interesting models for studying metacommunity processes. Since these springs can be considered as islands within a terrestrial context, we first aimed to test some predictions of the theory of island biogeography and the distance-decay hypothesis on benthic diatom communities. Then, we aimed to quantify the influence of physical, chemical, climatic and spatial factors on species assemblages. We evaluated the species-area relationship for all springs and for several group of springs classified according to their environmental and hydrochemical composition. The influence of environmental variables on α-diversity was tested. We also investigated whether β-diversity was related to spring isolation or changes in environmental conditions. Finally, we determined the importance of environmental and spatial variables in shaping diatom communities using ordination and variation partitioning. We did not find any species-area relationship whatever the group of springs investigated, and no geographical distance-decay pattern was observed. We found a significant effect of physical and chemical parameters on α-diversity and composition. Thus, diatoms communities of thermo-mineral springs did not seem to be influenced by dispersal processes at the scale of our study but appeared to be patterned by physical and chemical factors. Although a strong link between viruses and prokaryotes is commonly known to exist in aquatic systems, few studies have investigated their relationship in spring waters. In the French Massif Central, certain springs are known to exhibit varying levels of naturally occurring radioactivity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the standing stock of viruses together with prokaryotes and determine the potential environmental factors influencing them in springs characterized by contrasted radioactivity gradient. Among the investigated 15 spring habitats, flow cytometry analyses indicated that both viral (VA) and prokaryotic abundances (PA) varied by an order of magnitude accompanied by virus-to-prokaryote ratio ranging between 8 and 144.2. Significant differences in VA was evident among springs where low abundances (mean ± SD: 21.3 ± 7.0 × 107 VLP l−1) corresponded to high (mean ± SD: 1911 ± 814.0 nGy h−1) gamma (γ) dose radiation (222Rn) and vice versa. Adverse effect of water radioactivity (222Rn) on VA could perhaps corroborate our hypothesis of drastic effect of ionizing radiations on viruses, which might explain for lack of significant relationship between PA and VA. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) controls the degradation and sequestration of aquatic pollutants and, in turn, water quality. In particular, pollutant degradation is performed by oxidant species that are generated by exposure of DOM to solar light, yet, since DOM is a very complex mixture of poorly known substances, the relationships between potential oxidant precursors in DOM and their oxydative capacity is poorly known. Here, we hypothesized that production of oxidant species could be predicted using fluorescence analysis. We analysed water samples from an alluvial plain by fluorescence spectroscopy; the three-dimensional spectra were then decomposed into seven individual components using a multi-way algorithm. Components include a protein-like fluorophore, e.g. tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like, three humic fluorophores, 2-naphthoxyacetic acid, and a by-product. We compared component levels with the ability of water samples to generate reactive species under solar light. The results show a strong correlation between reactive species production and the intensity of two humic-like fluorophores assigned to reduced quinones. Monitoring these fluorophores should thus allow to predict the ability of DOM degradation of pollutants in surface waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wetlands are recognized for the importance of their hydrological function and biodiversity, and there is now a consensus to protect and restore them as well as to complete the knowledge on their functioning. Here, we studied the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of a wetland composed of the Auzon cut-off meander, the Allier River, the alluvial fluvial flow, and watershed aquifer. Water was sampled at different locations, in spring, summer, and autumn. For each sample, DOM was characterized for its chemical and optical properties and its photooxidant capacity through its ability to generate DOM triplet excited states (3DOM*) and singlet oxygen upon simulated solar light exposure. UV-visible and fluorescence indices revealed that DOM was mainly microbial-derived whatever the sampling sites with spatial and temporal variations in terms of aromaticity (5.5–22%), specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (0.28–2.82 L m−1mgC−1), ratio of the absorbance at 254 and 365 nm (4.6–10.8), fluorescence index (1.35–166), and biological index (0.812–2.25). All the samples generated 3DOM* and singlet oxygen, rates of formation of which showed parallel variations. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we found positive correlations between the sensitizing properties of DOM samples and parameters associated to the abundance of low molecular weight and low absorbing chromophores. Moreover, the parameter variation across the wetland reinforced the hydrological movements observed in a previous study, suggesting that these parameters could be used as water connection tracers. This article is based on field investigations carried out at Ta Keo and Banteay Srei temples (Angkor, Cambodia), which have similar environmental histories and display the same recurrent decorative pattern (lotus petal) in three different sandstone lithotypes. Based on two original scales of mechanical and chemical weathering, the degree of deterioration of c.2000 sandstone petals was visually assessed, resulting in the proposal of a durability scale. An explanatory scheme was provided, based on laboratory analyses of stone materials (ICP-AES, XRD, SEM-EDS, polarizing microscopy and mercury injection). The key drivers of sandstone durability are both mineralogical and petrophysical. The remarkable preservation of the pink sandstone is due to the quartzose nature of its clasts, the non-swelling clay content of its abundant matrix (kaolinite) and its porosity structure (large connected pores and probable non-connected porosity). The overall good preservation of the green sandstone is due to its extremely low porosity and specific surface area, associated with its strong cementation. The severe deterioration of the grey sandstone is due to its laminated structure (oriented biotites), the susceptibility to hygric swelling and solution of its binding agents (chlorite/smectite and calcite) and its porosity structure, which evolves during a two-stage weathering sequence. The first stage is characterized by a bimodal porosity due to the partial clogging of macropores by swelling clays, and the second stage by a substantial increase in porosity and the penetration of salts (barite and anhydrite). A first application of geomorphological methods to the assessment of sandstone deterioration at Angkor is presented. Damage diagnosis was carried out on the first eastern tier of the central pyramid of the 1,000 year-old Ta Keo temple. Methods combine field observations and measurements at 230 sampling points, high-resolution lasergrammetry and stereophotogrammetry on a 2-m2 test zone, and SEM observations. The first results indicate that decay operates through a synergistic combination of weathering phenomena dominated by scaling and solution, and exhibits a high spatial variability. Percentages of deteriorated surfaces vary from 17.6 to 93.8%, and average stone recession values from 0.00 to 2.71 cm (minimum) and 0.34 to 5.49 cm (maximum). On the test-zone, stereophotogrammetry and 3D-mapping of the present and reconstructed initial states using lasergrammetry indicate that erosion scars up to 6 cm deep have formed since 1963. On the whole, the amount of deteriorated surfaces more than tripled between 1963 and 2008. The degree of implication of salts in stone decay remains unclear for most efflorescences are composed of calcite (CaCO3), with secondary importance of barite (BaSO4) and gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). Future prospects aim to evaluate the impact on stone decay of the clearing out of the temple from the forest in the 1920s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
