The upper trapezius muscle is often excessively excited during resistance training exercises, increasing the shoulder's liability to musculoskeletal disorders of individuals participating in overhead sports or throwing activities. Different approaches have been proposed for reducing the potentially harmful loading of the upper trapezius. None, however, has been devised to deal directly with the main culprit: the muscle excitation. This non-randomized comparative study explores the feasibility of biofeedback based on surface electromyograms (EMGs) in suppressing undue excitation of the upper trapezius during a seated row exercise. Eight male volunteers were instructed to perform the wide-grip seated row exercise without and with the EMG biofeedback of the upper trapezius. Surface EMGs from the three portions of the trapezius and the serratus anterior were sampled with pairs of surface electrodes. A triaxial accelerometer was positioned on the weight stack for the identification of the exercise phase and repetition. This study showed that during the "with biofeedback" condition, the participants were able to activate the upper trapezius and serratus anterior to a lower degree (~ 10%) compared to the "without biofeedback" condition. Levetiracetam (LEV) and carbamazepine (CBZ) are effective monotherapies for focal epilepsy in children. However, the best drug remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing LEV and CBZ monotherapy in the management of pediatric focal epilepsy (PFE). We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published until February 2024 comparing LEV and CBZ monotherapy in PFE. Statistical analysis was performed using R version 4.2.2, heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics, and the risk of bias was evaluated using the RoB-2 tool. Risk Ratios (RR) with p < 0.05 were considered significant. The outcomes of interest were seizure freedom, any adverse events, adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation, dermatologic adverse events, and the frequency of at least one seizure, defined as the proportion of patients experiencing one or more seizures during the treatment period. Four RCTs comprising 381 children with a mean age of 7.32 to 9.28 years were included, of whom 186 (48.8%) received LEV monotherapy. There was no significant difference between groups (RR: 1.15; 95% CI 0.88–1.50; p = 0.31; I2 = 90%) regarding seizure freedom. The frequency of at least one seizure (RR: 0.71; 95% CI 0.52–0.97; p = 0.03; I2 = 8%) and dermatologic adverse events (RR: 0.24; 95% CI 0.09–0.64; p < 0.01; I2 = 0%) were both significantly lower in the LEV group. There were no significant differences in the presence of any adverse events (RR: 0.58; 95% CI 0.33–1.01; p = 0.05; I2 = 36%) or adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation (RR: 0.67; 95% CI 0.13–3.42; p = 0.63; I2 = 30%). Conclusion: In monotherapy, LEV was more advantageous than CBZ for PFE, with a lower frequency of seizures and fewer dermatological adverse events. However, both drugs are equally effective in achieving seizure freedom, adverse events without specification, and those that lead to treatment discontinuation. Our findings have important implications for clinical practice and decision-making in this condition. Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infect a wide range of domestic and wild animals, including humans, in the case of T. gondii, and cause economic losses in livestock due to abortion and neonatal mortality. In Somalia, zoonotic diseases are concerning due to cultural practices and livestock’s economic importance, but surveillance is limited. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum in Somali sheep, goats, and cattle. A cross-sectional study was conducted between December 2018 and January 2020 in Benadir and Lower Shabelle regions of Somalia. Blood samples were collected from 128 cattle, 184 goats, and 46 sheep. Serum samples were tested for anti-T. gondii and anti-N. caninum antibodies using IFAT, and PCR was performed on extracted DNA to detect T. gondii and N. caninum DNA. Overall, 106/358 (29.6%) animals tested positive for anti-T. gondii antibodies, with the highest prevalence in sheep (62.5%), followed by goats (30.4%) and cattle (15.6%) (P < 0.001). For anti-N. caninum antibodies, 13/358 (3.6%) animals tested positive, with cattle showing the highest prevalence (6.2%), followed by goats and sheep (both 2.2%). Co-seropositivity for both antibodies was found in cattle and sheep. Molecular detection of T. gondii DNA revealed a prevalence of 9/358 (2.5%), primarily in sheep (15.2%) and cattle at 1.6% while all goat samples tested negative. No samples were positive for the N. caninum Nc5 gene. This study reveals T. gondii and N. caninum prevalence in Somali ruminants, highlighting the need for better surveillance and control. Background: Skeletal muscle is a highly adaptive tissue, capable of responding to different physiological and functional demands, even in situations that may cause instability. Objectives: To evaluate how partial calcaneal tendon (CT) injuries affect the remodeling and plasticity of the gastrocnemius muscle over time. Methods and results: The study was carried out with Wistar rats randomly divided into five groups. The control group comprised animals not subjected to partial CT damage. The remaining four groups were subjected to partial CT damage and were further categorized based on the time of euthanasia: 3, 14, 28, and 55 days after injury. The gastrocnemius muscle was collected and used for gene expression analysis, zymography, flow cytometry, and morphology. The calcaneal tendon was analyzed only to verify the presence of the partial injury. Results: The impact of partial CT injury on the gastrocnemius homeostasis, particularly on gene expression, was more pronounced in the 3-day group compared to the other groups, especially the control group. Cytokine profile and morphologic alterations occurred in the 55 days group when compared to the other groups. Conclusions: The data reported here suggest that partial injury can negatively affect intracellular signaling and degradation pathways, disturbing the muscular extracellular matrix regulatory mechanisms and communication with the tendon. Adenomyosis is associated with dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain; however, the triggering mechanisms of painful stimuli and the role of uterine nerve fibers in the manifestation of pain remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to systematically review the role of uterine nerve fibers' presence and density in the occurrence of pain in patients with adenomyosis. An electronic search was performed using the Embase, PubMed/Medline, and Cochrane databases. We included all studies from inception to November 2023. A total of ten studies that compared uterine biopsies samples of women with and without adenomyosis were included. The biomarker antiprotein gene product 9.5 was decreased or absent in the endometrium of most included women with adenomyosis. None of the included studies observed a difference in neurofilament (NF) staining between the adenomyosis and non-adenomyosis groups. Studies that assessed nerve growth factor (NGF) staining were heterogeneous in design. One study reported no difference in immunohistochemistry staining in any endometrial layer between the adenomyosis and non-adenomyosis groups, while another reported increased staining in the adenomyosis functional endometrial layer, and a third study reported overexpression of NGF, synaptophysin (SYN), and microtubule-associated protein 2 mRNA in focal adenomyosis alone. Preliminary data from poor-quality studies suggest an increase in the uterine density of nerve fibers in patients with adenomyosis. Fusarium is a ubiquitous genus that includes mycotoxin producers and pathogens of animals, plants, and other organisms. Four new Fusarium species obtained from the University Recife Mycology Culture Collection (Micoteca URM), Brazil, are described in this study based on the morphology and phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of calmodulin (CaM), RNA polymerase largest subunit (RPB1), RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2), and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1). The newly discovered species were nested within the Fusarium concolor (FCOSC), F. incarnatum-equiseti (FIESC), and F. sambucinum (FSAMSC) species complexes and were named as F. teslae, F. mourae, F. primavesiae, and F. pulchrum. This research contributes to the knowledge of new fungal species from tropical regions and contributes to information related to the morphological and phylogenetic diversity of Fusarium. Integrating the prescriptive and linear approach of NSD with the non-linear approach of service design can enhance value cocreation orientation in service innovation. Then, the objectives of this study are to explore these complementarities, propose an integrated model that enhances value cocreation in service innovation, and evaluate this model. The methodology involved a systematic literature review, focus group, and brainstorming session to propose the model, followed by evaluation through three case studies and expert interviews. As results, the model's main feature is the development of each service prerequisite through the service design cycle, prescriptively incorporating customer input throughout the service innovation process. Expert interviews and model application indicated that the model achieved its objectives, as the development of each service element was based on a deep understanding of customer demands and their active participation, resulting in services with high potential for resource integration and value cocreation. After applying and evaluating the model, this study provides evidence that (i) hybrid waterfall-cyclic dynamic contributes to managing complexity in service innovation, while maintaining customer focus and creativity; (ii) recurring studies of customer needs in distinct service innovation phases, each focusing on a specific service element, contribute to enriching the understanding of such needs; (iii) active customer involvement in proposing and selecting each service prerequisites across service innovation phases tends to enhance resource integration and value cocreation; (iv) waterfall and cyclic hybrid approach for service innovation contributes to generating detailed service prerequisites specifications, leading to more effective implementation; and (v) customer-centered dynamics throughout the service innovation process contribute to promoting cross-departmental integration, embedding customer needs across the organization. Dengue remains a significant public health concern in Brazil, with all federative units registering occurrences of the disease within their territories despite constant measures to control the Aedes aegypti vector. This study aimed to evaluate the profile of notified dengue cases in the Brazilian Legal Amazon from 2001 to 2021, analyzing National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) data on the disease to assess the risks for its occurrence. Subsequently, statistical analyses were conducted to identify incidence and lethality rates. Over the study period, approximately 1,344,950 cases of the disease were reported, resulting in 863 deaths. The transmission of cases in the Amazonian states was not homogeneous, demonstrating variations and clusters over the years of extreme value for health authorities. Identifying and understanding the spatiotemporal patterns for the disease in the region helps assess the behavior of infections in areas with high susceptibility, promoting targeted interventions and resource allocation for dengue control programs. It is important to encourage future studies that evaluate the disease's risk based on quantitative variables. Phthalic acid esters, or phthalates, are plasticizers commonly used in the plastics industry and they are known for their endocrine-disrupting effects. Numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of phthalate exposure on thyroid function, both in adults and children. However, there is still considerable debate surrounding this issue. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to clarify existing evidence and offer new insights into the magnitude of this disruption and its potential consequences for children and adolescents’ health. A comprehensive literature search using MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was performed. The inclusion criteria for the studies were the determination of regression coefficients between phthalates concentrations and thyroid levels, in children and adolescents. The quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale for longitudinal studies and the Critical Appraisal Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies scale for cross-sectional studies. Seventeen studies were included in this review, involving a total of 5616 participants, with similar phthalate levels across the diverse studies. Significant positive correlations between T3 (total and free) levels and phthalate exposure were found, as well as persistent negative associations between total-T4 levels and phthalate exposure. On the contrary, associations found regarding TSH and free-T4 did not show a consistent pattern. Conclusion: This review gathered enough evidence to conclude that exposure to phthalates causes an increase in T3 (total and free) levels and a decrease in total-T4 levels, which is consistent with previous animal studies. These findings highlight the importance of minimizing contact with plasticizers and microplastics in the environment, guaranteeing the safety of food products for the health of children and adolescents. This study investigates the relationship between oceanic and atmospheric parameters and their relation with the occurrence of Coastal Squall Lines (CSL) in the Eastern Amazon. Utilizing a minimalist set of stability and stratification parameters, results indicate a significant coherence in the 8 and 12-month period in bulk parameters, potentially linked to the discharge of the Amazon River and the convective regime of Western Tropical Atlantic. A cross-wavelet analysis shed light on the relation of CSL frequency with the local and remote oceanic stratification and atmosphere stability parameters. Additionally, composite analyses reveal shifts in the distributions of these parameters during CSL occurrences, highlighting the sensitivity of CSL to environmental variables. The environmental variables rely on local and remote drivers, whose interactions still need to be fully addressed. Our results indirectly quantify how these drivers can explain the CSL frequency, with the advantage of bypassing a full assessment of submesoscale processes. These outcomes reveal the need to consider the influence of local shelf sea stratification to enhance the precision of CSL characterization, what can be used to improve the setup of atmospheric models. While this study covers this gap, further research considering the mechanistic approach is needed to improve the understanding of mesoscale convection at the Eastern Amazon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes gradual memory loss and cognitive impairment. Intracerebroventricular injections of streptozotocin (ICV-STZ) have been used as an experimental model of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (SAD) because they produce deficits in brain insulin signaling, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration, resulting in cognitive decline and memory impairment. Spirulina platensis (SPI) is a nutraceutical with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties. The objective of this work was to study the effects of SPI on cognitive deficits and neuronal damage in mice submitted to the experimental model of SAD induced by ICV-STZ. Male Swiss mice (25–35 g) received ICV-STZ (3 mg/Kg) bilaterally on days 1 and 3, SPI (50 and 100 mg/Kg, o.p.) or vehicle (saline) was administered 2 h after the second surgery, and once a day for 16 days. SPI treatment prevented working, episodic, spatial, and aversive memory deficits. Locomotor activity was not altered. ICV-STZ caused an increase in MDA, nitrite, and superoxide anion, while decreasing GSH. SPI treatment protected against GSH increase in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and inhibited AChE activity in the prefrontal cortex. SPI prevented astrogliosis and microgliosis induced by ICV-STZ. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of SPI for the treatment of SAD, indicating that its neuroprotective action is linked to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and AChE inhibitory activity. Introduction: Glioblastomas (GBM) are aggressive tumors that make up about 7% of central nervous system tumors in children. Spinal GBMs (sGBMs) are extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of pediatric spinal tumors. sGBMs are difficult to treat due to their infiltrative nature and cause significant morbidity. While there is extensive literature on treatment outcomes for cranial GBMs, there is limited research on pediatric sGBMs. This meta-analysis aims to assess the impact of available treatments on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in pediatric sGBM patients and to identify prognostic factors. Methodology: A comprehensive review of pediatric sGBM cases up to June 2024 was conducted using PubMed and Mendeley. Inclusion criteria were case series and case reports of pediatric sGBM, excluding those with metastatic sGBM or aggregated patient data. A total of 2202 articles were identified, with 46 meeting the inclusion criteria. Data on demographics, tumor characteristics, extent of resection, and treatments were collected. Kaplan–Meier and Cox proportional hazards models were used for statistical analysis. Results: The data was collected from 81 patients, 43 females and 38 males, with an average age of 10.7 years. The majority of tumors were found in the cervical region (32%). Subtotal resection (STR) was performed in 53% of cases, and 59% of patients received both chemotherapy (QT) and radiotherapy (RT). The average progression-free survival (PFS) was 10.95 months, with RT significantly improving PFS (15.2 months vs. 2.1 months, p = 0.001). The average OS was 13.4 months, with RT and QT being significant protective factors (p < 0.05). Age over seven years and cervical tumor location were associated with worse OS. Conclusion: This study highlights the significance of radiation therapy and chemotherapy in enhancing overall survival and progression-free survival in pediatric patients with spinal cord glioblastoma. Specifically, RT significantly improves PFS, while advanced age and tumor location in the cervical region are associated with worse outcomes. Objectives: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of Streptococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans, its serotypes (c, e, f, and k), collagen-binding genes (cnm/cbm), and Candida albicans in medium deep (D2) and deep (D3) dentin carious lesions of permanent teeth. Materials and methods: Carious dentin was collected from D2 (n = 23) and D3 (n = 24) lesions in posterior teeth from 31 individuals. DNA was extracted and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Streptococcus spp. exhibited a high prevalence in both D2 and D3 lesions, with a 100% occurrence rate in D3. Although S. mutans was prevalent in both lesion types, serotype distribution highlighted differences in complexity. Serotype e was the most frequently detected in D2 samples. Serotype c was absent in D2 but present in 19.0% of D3; serotype k was exclusively found in multi-serotype D3 alongside f, c, and e. The cbm gene and undetermined serotypes were detected only in D3. Candida albicans was not found in any samples, regardless of lesion depth. Conclusion: Dentinal lesions exhibited a complex array of S. mutans serotypes, with a notable prevalence of the genus Streptococcus and an overall S. mutans prevalence of approximately 35%. Candida albicans was absent. In addition, a high diversity of serotypes was observed, including multiple and indeterminate serotypes, along with the presence of the collagen-binding cbm gene. Clinical relevance: The identification of diverse Streptococcus mutans serotypes and the cbm gene in carious dentin from permanent teeth offers insights into microbial factors potentially linked to dentinal caries lesions. The goal of this paper is to conduct an environmental analysis of a municipal solid waste management system in a midsized region of Southeast Brazil with two million inhabitants. While the current municipal solid waste management system has already eradicated dumps, it landfills practically all its waste, with < 2% open composting and recycling. Therefore, alternatives such as closed composting (CC), anaerobic digestion (AD) with electricity or biomethane production, and incineration are proposed via scenarios in which legal requirements are observed and diversion targets are set. Life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed using EASETECH, a specific software for municipal solid waste (MSW) management systems. The results show that the high diversions scenario (70% recyclables/biowaste) with upgraded biomethane from AD and recycling had 76% greater environmental savings than the similar scenario with the new Brazilian diversion targets (25.8% recyclables, 18.1% biowaste). CC performed much worse than AD, with 80% less savings, although it was marginally better than open composting, with a 95% difference in savings. Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II; Hunter syndrome) is a lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding the enzyme iduronate 2-sulfatase (IDS) and biochemically characterized by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in different tissues. It is a multisystemic disorder that presents liver abnormalities, the pathophysiology of which is not yet established. In the present study, we evaluated bioenergetics, redox homeostasis, and mitochondrial dynamics in the liver of 6-month-old MPS II mice (IDS−). Our findings show a decrease in the activity of α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase and an increase in the activities of succinate dehydrogenase and malate dehydrogenase. The activity of mitochondrial complex I was also increased whereas the other complex activities were not affected. In contrast, mitochondrial respiration, membrane potential, ATP production, and calcium retention capacity were not altered. Furthermore, malondialdehyde levels and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein oxidation were increased in the liver of MPS II mice, indicating lipid peroxidation and increased ROS levels, respectively. Sulfhydryl and reduced glutathione levels, as well as glutathione S-transferase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities were also increased. Finally, the levels of proteins involved in mitochondrial mass and dynamics were decreased in knockout mice liver. Taken together, these data suggest that alterations in energy metabolism, redox homeostasis, and mitochondrial dynamics can be involved in the pathophysiology of liver abnormalities observed in MPS II. We show a reduction in the content of proteins that indicate mitochondrial mass (VDAC and COX IV) and of proteins that regulate mitochondrial fission (Drp1) and fusion (OPA1) in the liver of MPS II mice. We also demonstrate lipid peroxidation, an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and changes in non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant defenses. The activities of complex I of the electron transport chain, α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase were also altered in the liver of knockout mice. Vibrio spp. are remarkably diverse bacteria, being worthy of investigation not only for their antibiotic resistance and virulence, but also for their biotechnological potential. Indeed, there is increasing evidence that these bacteria display industrially relevant traits, particularly as producers of antimicrobial substances, tensioactive/emulsifying compounds, and enzymes. Here, our aim was to investigate the potential of Vibrio strains isolated from two different marine sources to produce such biotechnologically applicable substances. From the eighteen analyzed strains, five were isolated from plastic particles from a heavily polluted urban estuary and 13 from calcareous sponges inhabiting submarine caves in an isolated volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Enzymatic screening revealed that most strains were agarolytic and cellulolytic. Overall, six strains showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29,213, with four of them active towards Escherichia coli ATCC 25,922 as well. Additionally, eight strains were positive for the production of bioemulsifiers. Genomic analyses of four strains further revealed insights regarding the enzymatic arsenal, as shown by the detection of several key gene clusters pertaining to the chitin degradation pathway, and also encoding diverse classes of antimicrobial-active metabolites. Our findings highlight the biotechnological potential of Vibrio spp., evidencing their functional diversity and the need for continued and sustained prospecting of this bacterial genus to uncover its potential high-value-added bioproducts. Silvopastoral systems (SPS) are a sustainable alternative to reduce livestock environmental impacts and restore degraded pastures due to their higher diversity, increased forage production and quality, enhanced soil quality, and C storage. Legume-based silvopastoral systems also contribute through biological nitrogen fixation by the legume component. In this study we evaluate the scientific production on the Web of Science database from 2010 to 2022, with a two-step process. First the keywords “silvopastoral systems” were used for an initial analysis of the overall literature, followed by “legume” or “enzym*” or “microbial communit*, yielding more than 870 papers. The number of publications grew exponentially during the period evaluated, and between 2019 and 2022, approximately 63% of all publications occurred. Brazil had the largest number of published articles, followed by Mexico, USA, Spain, and Colombia. There was also a network of collaborations between institutions in these countries. Agriculture is the research area with the most published articles, with the most studied topics being management, biodiversity, and nutrient dynamics and cycling, especially carbon and nitrogen. However, only nine of these studied the soil microbial community and five, the soil enzymatic activity. Although these previous studies have observed the effect of SPS on important soil indicators, how SPS is used as a restoration tool to affect the microbial biomass and activity of extracellular enzymes remains poorly understood and is important to validate the regeneration strategies. Thus, this article analyzes the evolution of publications on this agroecosystem to advance the knowledge and sustainability in those segments that are still little studied, such as the microbial community and soil enzymatic activity. The invasive mollusc Limnoperna fortunei, commonly known as the golden mussel, poses significant threats to ecosystems and economic sectors, primarily hydroelectric power generation, due to the encrustation of hydraulic structures, which leads to clogging and efficiency loss. Effective monitoring is essential for implementing management strategies against this species. This study compared two methodologies for monitoring L. fortunei: a conventional microscopic inspection, which involves visually identifying and counting the larvae of L. fortunei in water samples, and a molecular approach using environmental DNA (eDNA) via real-time PCR, which detects the presence of L. fortunei by amplifying and analysing its DNA in water samples. Both methods were used to qualitatively and quantitatively assess L. fortunei in ecological water samples across 16 watersheds in Paraná, southern Brazil, aiming to determine their efficacy and complementarity. The molecular approach demonstrated high sensitivity, with results ranging from 50.0 to 97.5% agreement with the conventional method, influenced by environmental and temporal factors. In qualitative comparisons, complete concordance between methods was observed in 72.5% of cases, with molecular tests yielding positive results in 15.5% of cases where conventional methods produced adverse outcomes. Quantitative analysis revealed a weak positive correlation between eDNA concentrations and larval densities (Spearman’s ρ = 0.1878, p = 0.2168), with no significant differences in the distributions of density categories between methods (Wilcoxon test, p = 0.3694) and weak agreement in quantitative analyses (Cohen’s Kappa κ = 0.1509). Each method presented unique strengths: the molecular approach, while highly sensitive, was prone to false negatives due to PCR inhibition, whereas the conventional method faced challenges in detecting low-density populations. The study concludes that combining both approaches provides a more robust monitoring strategy, enhancing detection accuracy across various environmental conditions, and recommends using both methodologies while considering ongoing methodological improvements for effective ecological monitoring of this invasive species. Containerization is increasingly recognized as a valuable virtualization strategy for edge computing infrastructures, favored for its small footprint and low overhead. However, extracting the best out of containerization requires efficient management of container image repositories (known as container registries) across the network, as unoptimized positioning of registries can lead to increased application provisioning times and resource wastage. While previous studies have proposed several registry positioning strategies to reduce application provisioning times, none of them have considered the impact of registry management decisions on the energy efficiency of edge infrastructure. In this paper, we argue that overlooking the impact of registry positioning on energy consumption can lead to unsustainable operations in edge infrastructures, as registries are typically resource-intensive components. To address this gap, we propose a novel strategy called MAPER that dynamically relocates container registries in response to user mobility patterns, optimizing both application provisioning times and energy consumption. Simulated experiments based on real-world container traces show that MAPER outperforms baseline strategies from the literature, reducing on average the application delay issues by 60.03%, provisioning time issues by 25.87%, and energy consumption by 12.69%. Sulfite oxidase deficiencies, either caused by deficiency of the apoenzyme or the molybdenum cofactor, and ethylmalonic encephalopathy are inherited disorders that impact sulfur metabolism. These patients present with severe neurodeterioration accompanied by cerebral cortex and cerebellum abnormalities, and high thiosulfate levels in plasma and tissues, including the brain. We aimed to clarify the mechanisms of such abnormalities, so we assessed the ex vivo effects of thiosulfate administration on energetic status and oxidative stress markers in cortical and cerebellar tissues of newborn rats. Thiosulfate (0.5 µmol/g) or PBS (vehicle) was injected into the fourth ventricle of rat pups. Thirty minutes after the injection, animals were euthanized and the brain structures were utilized for the experiments. Our data showed that thiosulfate decreased the reduced glutathione (GSH) concentrations, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in the cortical structure. Thiosulfate also increased DCFH oxidation, hydrogen peroxide generation and glutathione reductase activity. In the cerebellum, thiosulfate reduced SOD and glutathione peroxidase activities but increased GST and CAT activities as well as DCFH oxidation. Regarding energy metabolism, thiosulfate specifically decreased complex IV activity in the cortex, whereas it increased cerebellar complex I and creatine kinase activities, indicating bioenergetic disturbances. The results suggest that the accumulation of thiosulfate causing redox disruption and bioenergetic alterations has a prominent role in the pathogenesis of sulfur metabolism deficiencies. Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a prevalent condition, with a risk of serious complications. Phototherapy is the standard treatment for significant cases, but its limitations highlight the need for additional options. Zinc sulfate has emerged as a potential adjunctive treatment. Our objective is to evaluate the efficacy of zinc sulfate as an adjunct to phototherapy in neonates with hyperbilirubinemia. PubMed, Embase, and CENTRAL were searched for studies published up to September 2024. Eligible studies were randomized clinical trials (RCTs) enrolling neonates with hyperbilirubinemia that evaluated the combined use of phototherapy and zinc sulfate. This study followed PRISMA guidelines, with independent extraction of data by two reviewers. Risk of bias was assessed using the RoB2 tool, and the quality of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Eleven RCTs comprising 1,349 neonates were included. A total of 690 (51.1%) neonates received zinc sulfate. Zinc sulfate significantly reduced bilirubin levels at 24 h (MD = -0.76 mg/dL; 95% CI = -1.30 to -0.22; P <.01; I2 = 82%), 48 h (MD = -0.88 mg/dL; 95% CI = -1.60 to -0.17; P = 0.02; I2 = 76%) and at 72 h (MD = -1.19 mg/dL; 95% CI = -2.29 to -0.09; P =.003; I2 = 94%). Subgroup analysis indicated that term neonates with normal birth weight benefited most from the intervention, while preterm and low-birth-weight infants showed no significant difference. This study aimed to evaluate the association between microcephaly and hearing disorders in children with exposed or suspected exposure to Zika virus (ZIKV) during the intrauterine period. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled children exposed or suspected of being exposed to ZIKV during intrauterine period, admitted to the hospital between April 2016 and July 2018, and followed up until September 2021. All children underwent at least one automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) test. For analysis, the patients were divided into four groups: those with microcephaly, without microcephaly, suspected ZIKV infection, and controls. Other causes of microcephaly were excluded. Hearing impairment was assessed using the AABR to determine associations with microcephaly or central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. Of the 134 children included, 34 (25.4%) were diagnosed with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), of whom 28 (82.4%) had microcephaly, and the remaining six (17.6%) without microcephaly. Among the 28 children with microcephaly, 3 (10.7%) had abnormal AABR. Among CZS children without microcephaly (n = 6), 1 (16.7%) had abnormal AABR (Fisher’s exact test p = 0.56). Introduction: Knowledge about the distribution and frequency of the respective haplotypes on the wildtype and mutant allele is highly relevant in the context of future gene therapy clinical studies in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 3, the most common autosomal dominantly inherited ataxia. Single nucleotide polymorphisms associated to the disease-causing gene, ATXN3, have been determined. We wanted to investigate the frequency and regional distribution of two intragenic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a large European SCA3 cohort and their relation to the clinical phenotype. Methods: The genotypes of the two polymorphisms at base pair positions 987 and 1118 of the ATXN3 were determined for their co-localization on the normal and expanded allele, respectively, in 286 SCA3 mutation carriers and 117 healthy controls from 11 European sites. Results: The distribution of genotypes on the expanded allele differed from those of the wildtype allele of SCA3 mutation carriers and of healthy controls, and was mainly influenced by the regional origin. In our cohort, no particular clinical phenotype was associated with any specific haplotype. The development of management strategies for the promotion of sustainable fisheries relies on a deep knowledge of ecological and evolutionary processes driving the diversification and genetic variation of marine organisms. Sustainability strategies are especially relevant for marine species such as the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), a small pelagic fish with high ecological and socioeconomic importance, especially in Southern Europe, whose stock has declined since 2006, possibly due to environmental factors. Here, we generated sequences for 139 mitochondrial genomes from individuals from 19 different geographical locations across most of the species distribution range, which was used to assess genetic diversity, diversification history and genomic signatures of selection. Our data supported an extensive gene flow in European sardine. However, phylogenetic analyses of mitogenomes revealed diversification patterns related to climate shifts in the late Miocene and Pliocene that may indicate past divergence related to rapid demographic expansion. Tests of selection showed a significant signature of purifying selection, but positive selection was also detected in different sites and specific mitochondrial lineages. Our results showed that European sardine diversification has been strongly driven by climate shifts, and rapid changes in marine environmental conditions are likely to strongly affect the distribution and stock size of this species. Non-human primates (NHPs) are reported as exclusive hosts of Trypanosoma minasense, whose transmission cycle remains unknown. We investigated trypanosomatid infections in 194 NHPs of nine species from the Brazilian Southeast region. We evaluated the impact of landscape composition and forest fragmentation on T. minasense infection. In the Atlantic Forest areas, Sapajus nigritus presented a higher positivity for T. minasense on the blood slides (60.9%) compared to Callithrix spp. (24.6%) and Alouatta guariba clamitans (20.7%); molecular analysis revealed higher infection prevalences in S. nigritus (87.0%) and A. g. clamitans (78.8%) than Callithrix spp. (50.8%). Callithrix spp. from the Cerrado and bordering areas showed higher infection prevalences by T. minasense on the blood slides (51.8%) and molecular diagnosis (77.6%). Eight (7.8%) positive hemocultures were obtained, but in only one (from A. g. clamitans) parasites were isolated and characterized as Crithidia mellificae. Trypanosoma cruzi TcII and T. rangeli lineage A were identified in Leontopithecus rosalia and C. penicillata, respectively. The results indicate that Alouatta, Callithrix, and Sapajus genera are highly exposed to T. minasense in the study area and landscape analysis revealed that these infections were inversely correlated with the proportion of forest and directly correlated with the forest fragmentation. Atherosclerotic vascular changes can begin during childhood, providing risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood. Identifiable risk factors such as dyslipidemia accelerate this process for some children. The apolipoprotein B (APOB) gene could help explain the inter-individual variability in lipid levels among young individuals and identify groups that require greater attention to prevent CVD. A cross-sectional study was conducted with school-aged children and adolescents in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais. The study evaluated cardiovascular risk factors' variables and XbaI polymorphism in the APOB gene for associations with increased total cholesterol (TC). The prevalence of increased TC was notably high, reaching 68.9% in the study population. Carriers of the variant T allele were 1.45 times more likely to develop increased TC in a dominant model (1.09–1.94, p = 0.011). After adjustments, excess weight and a family history of dyslipidemia interacted significantly with XbaI polymorphism in increased TC, resulting in Odds Ratio of 1.74 (1.11–2.71, p = 0.015) and 2.04 (1.14–3.67, p = 0.016), respectively. This retrospective, comparative, multicenter study aimed to evaluate the real-world outcomes and predictors of failure of Gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) at 12 months in glaucoma patients. Predictors of failure of absolute success in bilateral cases (422 eyes of 308 patients) included pre-operative intraocular pressure (IOP; IRR = 1.02; p = 0.01), and pre-operative mean deviation (IRR = 0.98; p = 0.007). The significant predictors of failure of relative success included binocularity (IRR = 4.05; p = 0.001) and pre-operative IOP (IRR = 1.04; p = 0.022). Only one eye per patient (308 eyes) was included in the second analysis. IOP reduced from 21.84 ± 7.96 mmHg to 11.97 ± 2.89 mmHg at 12 months; the number of hypotensive eye drop medications decreased from 3.07 ± 1.04 to 1.06 ± 1.08 (p < 0.001 for both). The pre-operative IOP was a predictive factor for failure of absolute (IRR = 1.02; p = 0.026) and relative successes (IRR = 1.05; p = 0.014). The preoperative number of hypotensive medications only affected absolute success (IRR = 1.25; p = 0.004). The Kaplan–Meier graph revealed relative and absolute success in 88.9% and 43.9% of cases, respectively. In conclusion, GATT is a safe and effective treatment option for diverse forms of open-angle glaucoma with varying severity. This Study focuses on the preparation of sustainable and efficient Chitosan catalyst for the removal of three organic pollutants, 17β-Estradiol (E2), 17α-ethynyl estradiol (EE2) and triclosan (TCS) from water. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by different techniques which confirmed the presence of the key components Chitosan, Carica Papaya seed and Kaolinite. The optical characterization proved the nanocomposite is photoactive with a band gap of 1.81 eV and 1.77 eV for Chitosan/kaolinite biochar (CS/KBC) and Chitosan/kaolinite biochar/GO (CS/KBC/GO) respectively, confirming the ability of the nanocomposite to be active in the visible light region of the spectrum. The degradation experiment using CS/KBC/GO was observed better with 100% removal for 5 mg/L E2 and EE2 over 60 min and 97.8% over 120 min for 10 mg/L TCS at optimum conditions (pH 3 for E2, and EE2 and pH 7). It was observed that the superoxide radical played a major role in the degradation of the contaminants. Furthermore, the CS/KBC/GO was efficient over four cycles without any decrease in performance, which rules out the question of catalyst deactivation proving the sustainability of the catalyst. The toxicity test shows that the water is safe as it does not harm cerio daphnia silvestrii organism.; CS/KBC/GO efficiently removed the micropollutants from real-life waste samples and the performance was very good with a slight decrease in performance for the wastewater due to the complex matrix of the water sample that competes for the active site. Chemical oxygen demand-COD is essential for water pollution control and monitoring and is also used to validate wastewater treatment technologies. Conventional COD determination use of costly toxic inputs that do not align with Sustainable Development Goals 6. To address these environmental challenges, photocatalytic (PC)- and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC)-COD sensors have emerged as a solution. This comprehensive review examines PC-COD and PEC-COD sensors in terms of nanomaterials used and their properties, focusing on how multiple variables influence PC activity and sensor performance. Analytical principles and operational variables affecting performance in COD determination are discussed. Streptococcus pneumoniae and influenza A virus (IAV) are significant agents of pneumonia cases and severe respiratory infections globally. Secondary bacterial infections, particularly by Streptococcus pneumoniae, are common in IAV-infected individuals, leading to critical outcomes. Despite reducing mortality, pneumococcal vaccines have high production costs and are serotype specific. The emergence of new circulating serotypes has led to the search for new prevention strategies that provide a broad spectrum of protection. In this context, vaccination using antigens present in all serotypes, such as Pneumococcal Surface Protein A (PspA), can offer broad coverage regardless of serotype. Employing the reverse genetics technique, our research group developed a recombinant influenza A H1N1 virus that expresses PspA (Flu-PspA), through the replacement of neuraminidase by PspA. This virus was evaluated as a bivalent vaccine against infections caused by influenza A and S. pneumoniae in mice. Initially, we evaluated the Flu-PspA virus's ability to infect cells and express PspA in vitro, its capacity to multiply in embryonated chicken eggs, and its safety when inoculated in mice. Subsequently, the protective effect against influenza A and Streptococcus pneumoniae lethal challenge infections in mice was assessed using different immunization protocols. Analysis of the production of antibodies against PspA4 protein and influenza, and the binding capacity of anti-PspA4 antibodies/complement deposition to different strains of S. pneumoniae were also evaluated. Our results demonstrate that the Flu-PspA virus vaccine efficiently induces PspA protein expression in vitro, and that it was able to multiply in embryonated chicken eggs even without exogenous neuraminidase. The Flu-PspA-based bivalent vaccine was demonstrated to be safe, stimulated high titers of anti-PspA and anti-influenza antibodies, and protected mice against homosubtypic and heterosubtypic influenza A and S. pneumoniae challenge. Moreover, an efficient binding of antibodies and complement deposition on the surface of pneumococcal strains ascribes the broad-spectrum vaccine response in vivo. This study investigates the changing epidemiological profile of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to young patients, highlighting its rising incidence among non-traditional risk groups. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted, covering data from medical records between 2000 and 2012. Patients were categorised into two age groups (≤ 40 years; 41–50 years). Sociodemographic and clinicopathological characteristics were evaluated. A total of 108 patients participated, mostly aged 41–50. Alcohol consumption (43.3%) surpassed smoking. Majority (56.7%) aged ≤ 40 never smoked. Lateral tongue border was most affected, with stages III and IV prevalent. Patients aged ≤ 40 were mostly eligible for surgery (44%). Survival tied to staging and surgery; age had no significant impact. Young squamous cell carcinoma patients often lacked traditional risk factors like smoking, underwent surgery, and typically had disease-free margins. The use of Calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) seeds is a promising solution to accelerate the hydration kinetics of Portland cement mixtures blended containing supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) with a low initial reactivity. However, the interaction mechanisms between C–S–H seeds and alternative SCM, such as Rice husk ash (RHA), are still not fully understood. In this paper, pastes with three levels of Portland cement replacement (10, 20, and 30% by volume of cement) by a high-carbon content RHA were analyzed, with and without the addition of 3% C–S–H seeds. The hydration process and the mechanical performance of the pastes were evaluated through isothermal calorimetry for seven days, thermogravimetric analysis, and compressive strength after 1, 7, and 28 days. The results showed that the C–S–H seeds increased Portlandite consumption during the first hours of the hydration process and enhanced compressive strength after one day of curing. These finds suggested that the use of C–S–H seeds could eliminate the delay in the hydration process and strength development during the initial hours caused by the high-carbon content and low reactivity of RHA. The use of macroalgae as feed additives has attracted great interest in past years because of their nutritional, immunostimulant, antiviral, antibacterial, and growth-promoting properties. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the use of dry biomass of macroalgae Ulva ohnoi in the diets of Penaeus vannamei post-larvae cultured in a biofloc system on growth performance, post-larvae microbiology, and resistance to thermal shock. U. ohnoi was included in the diets at three levels (0, 0.5, and 2% inclusion) and added to diets to replace kaolin. Post-larvae (0.068 ± 0.01 g) were cultured for 46 days in 60-L tanks at a density of 2000 post-larvae m−3 and fed six times daily. Shrimp fed with 0.5% of Ulva ohnoi in the diet showed a significantly higher final mean weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate than those in the control group. The post-larvae fed with the diet containing 2.0% of U. ohnoi exhibited a significantly higher total heterotrophic bacteria count than the post-larvae of the control group. Considering that the performance of shrimp fed with diets containing U. ohnoi was similar, the inclusion of 0.5% is recommended because shrimp growth was higher in this inclusion compared with the control. The commercial importance of cephalopods has increased considerably, being an important fishing resource. However, during the preparation for commercialization of those species, they suffer the process known as "finning" which includes removing and separating the head, arm, skin or even having the body structure cut into rings, which ends up making it difficult or often prevents the identification of the species, which can lead to replacements. In this sense, the present study aimed to use the large ribosomal region, rrnL (16S rDNA) to genetically identify cephalopod species sold in markets and fairs in Latin America. Whole and processed samples were collected from supermarkets and directly from local fishers the approximate collection location. Each generated sequence was submitted to the blastn portal for molecular comparison and included in the database for subsequent genetic identification. Our results indicate labeling errors in samples from the State of Pará that contained the species Dosidicus gigas found only in the Pacific Ocean and were generically labeled as "National Lula". No type of substitution was found among the samples that were being sold at fairs and markets, only labeling errors. The growth of microalgae under different trophic modes is widely considered in the literature. However, the cultivation of some microalgal strains under heterotrophic conditions requires further investigation. Thus, the present study investigated the growth potential of a Brazilian strain of Tetradesmus obliquus (Chlorophyceae, Scenedesmaceae) in terms of heterotrophic metabolism. For this purpose, cultures were generated using different concentrations of glucose (26, 13, and 6.5 g L–1) and sodium nitrate (0.6 g, 0.3, and 0.15 g L–1) in culture media. The growth parameters analysed were the maximum biomass achieved and volumetric productivity. The combination of 26 g L–1 glucose with 0.6 g L–1 sodium nitrate resulted in the greatest increase in dry weight (9.63 ± 0.15 g L–1). Then, T. obliquus cultures under heterotrophic conditions were compared with those under photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions. The maximum production in heterotrophic cultivation was similar to what had been obtained, while mixotrophic cultivation presented the best result, 14.77 ± 0.06 g L–1, and photoautotrophic cultivation obtained a maximum biomass of 7.90 ± 0.17 g L–1. The productivity values achieved were 0.52 ± 0.04 g L–1 day–1, 0.98 ± 0.07 g L–1 day–1, and 1.24 ± 0.07 g L–1 day–1 for photoautotrophic, heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultures, respectively. In common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), upright plant architecture is highly valued for agriculture. As plant architecture is controlled by many genes, recurrent selection is the optimal strategy for breeding programs. Additionally, conducting mass selection before flowering to intercross selected plants in the field increases efficiency by reducing the number of harvests to complete a selective cycle. For this to be effective, the plant's architecture at flowering must accurately predict its trait at harvest. Based on that, the objective of this study was to verify whether there is an association between plant architecture at flowering and at harvest and to study the relationship between plant architecture traits and grain yield. The traits assessed were plant height and plant architecture scores at flowering and harvest, stem diameter, grain yield, and the mass of hundred grains. Sixty-two progenies from each S0:2, S0:3 and S0:4 generations, with two commercial cultivars, were evaluated across three environments in a triple lattice experimental design. Genetic and phenotypic parameters and correlation coefficient were estimated. Progenies selection was carried out using index Z, and subsequently, the correlated response in the traits was determined. It was found that the correlation between heights and architecture scores at flowering and harvest were of high magnitude (r ≥ 0.90). There was also a low correlation between plant architecture traits and grain yield (− 0.29 < r ≤ 0.03). The results of this study suggest that selecting upright plants during the flowering stage is feasible, and that plant architecture and grain yield are expressed independently. Objectives: With this work, we evaluated the impact of the Lisbon Early ARthritis cliNic (LEARN) on untreated inflammatory arthritis clinical and patient-reported outcomes. Methods: A retrospective cohort study enrolled patients in LEARN since its inception. Patients were followed for 12 months and treated to achieve disease remission. Clinical, structural, and quality of life outcomes were assessed. The early arthritis module of the Portuguese Rheumatic Diseases Registry (Reuma.pt) is described. Results: We assessed 292 patients between 2015 and 2022. Mean symptom duration and DAS-28-4 V-ESR at baseline were 6.2 ± 3.5 months and 5.6 ± 1.3, respectively. Rheumatoid arthritis (56.4%; 40.1% seropositive) and psoriatic arthritis (12.4%) were the most common diagnoses. Most patients were treated with methotrexate (75.3%) combined with low-dose oral prednisolone (88.1%). At 12 months, a mean ΔDAS28-4 V-ESR improvement of 2.3 ± 0.4 was registered, with 29.5% and 48.9% of patients achieving remission (DAS28-4 V-ESR < 2.6) or low disease activity (DAS28-4 V-ESR < 3.2), respectively. Among RA patients only, these figures were 20.6% and 46.6%, respectively. A clinically meaningful functional improvement was observed in 72.1% of the patients. Structural progression was limited, affecting only 16.1% of the patients. Fatigue, anxiety, depression, and quality of life also improved substantially, translated by improvements in FACIT, HADS, EQ5D, and SF-36 scores. Conclusions: A structured, dedicated approach to patients with early arthritis resulted in good clinical, structural, and functional outcomes. Furthermore, our findings suggest the window of opportunity for early intervention may have implications for mental health and global well-being. Key Points • Patient assessment is facilitated by reliable electronic clinical records, such as the early arthritis module of the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register (Reuma.pt) which we describe here for the first time. • Inflammatory arthritis was confirmed in the majority of patients observed, but the time to first appointment was above the recommended. • Prompt start of conventional therapy allowed significant disease activity improvement and remission to be achieved in about one-third of the patients. • Key patient-reported outcomes elucidate disease impact and confirm the benefit of early treatment initiation, suggesting a window of opportunity also for mental health and global well-being. Kale is one of the main vegetables cultivated in Brazil due to its high nutritional value. Its leaves are mainly attacked by caterpillars, aphids and thrips, with the chemical control method being the most used in these cases. Predation on Thrips tabaci by the social wasp Polybia scutellaris was recorded in a small homegrown kale crop in southeastern Brazil, and this behavior was monitored for approximately three years. Predation occurred seasonally at the end of each dry season and it appears to be a species-specific interaction involving this particular predator-prey pair. No other social wasps species were observed preying on the thrips individuals during the observations.
