There is a widely recognized need to reduce human activity's impact on the environment. Many industries of the leather and textile sector (LTI), being aware of producing a significant amount of residues (Keßler et al. 2021; Liu et al. 2021), are adopting measures to reduce the impact of their processes on the environment, starting with a more comprehensive characterization of the chemical risk associated with the substances commonly used in LTI. The present work contributes to these efforts by compiling and toxicologically annotating the substances used in LTI, supporting a continuous learning strategy for characterizing their chemical safety. This strategy combines data collection from public sources, experimental methods and in silico predictions for characterizing four different endpoints: CMR, ED, PBT, and vPvB. We present the results of a prospective validation exercise in which we confirm that in silico methods can produce reasonably good hazard estimations and fill knowledge gaps in the LTI chemical space. The proposed protocol can speed the process and optimize the use of resources including the lives of experimental animals, contributing to identifying potentially harmful substances and their possible replacement by safer alternatives, thus reducing the environmental footprint and impact on human health. Human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells are self-renewing pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) that can differentiate into a wide range of specialized cells. Although moderate hypoxia (5% O
2 ) improves hPSC self-renewal, pluripotency, and cell survival, the effect of acute severe hypoxia (1% O2 ) on hPSC viability is still not fully elucidated. In this sense, we explore the consequences of acute hypoxia on hPSC survival by culturing them under acute (maximum of 24 h) physical severe hypoxia (1% O2 ). After 24 h of hypoxia, we observed HIF-1α stabilization concomitant with a decrease in cell viability. We also observed an increase in the apoptotic rate (western blot analysis revealed activation of CASPASE-9, CASPASE-3, and PARP cleavage after hypoxia induction). Besides, siRNA-mediated downregulation of HIF-1α and P53 did not significantly alter hPSC apoptosis induced by hypoxia. Finally, the analysis of BCL-2 family protein expression levels disclosed a shift in the balance between pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins (evidenced by an increase in BAX/MCL-1 ratio) caused by hypoxia. We demonstrated that acute physical hypoxia reduced hPSC survival and triggered apoptosis by a HIF-1α and P53 independent mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
We performed a retrospective multicenter study including 140 patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) from March 1995 to November 2018. Our objective was to analyze long term outcomes. Seventy-four percent had received a previous auto-SCT (ASCT) and the median number of lines pre-allo-SCT was 3 (range 1–9). Three year-event free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 38% and 44%, respectively. Non-relapse mortality (NRM) at day 100 was 19%. Cumulative incidence of grade III–IV acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) at day 100 was 16% and moderate/severe chronic GVHD at 3 years 34%. Active disease at allo-SCT (HR 1.95, p = 0.039) (HR 2.19, p = 0.019), HCT-CI ≥ 2 (2.45, p = 0.002) (HR 2.33, p = 0.006) and donor age >37 years (HR 2.75, p = 0.014) (HR 1.98, p = 0.043) were the only independent variables both for PFS and OS, respectively. NRM was significantly modified by HCT-CI ≥ 2 (HR 4.8, p = 0.008), previous ASCT (HR 4.4, p = 0.048) and grade III–IV acute GVHD on day 100 (HR 6.13, p = 0.016). Our data confirmed that allo-SCT is a curative option for patients with R/R DLBCL, displaying adequate results for fit patients with chemosensitive disease receiving an allo-SCT from a young donor.

- Abstract
In spite of the good prognosis of patients with early-stage melanoma, there is a substantial proportion of them that develop local or distant relapses. With the introduction of targeted and immune therapies for advanced melanoma, including at the adjuvant setting, early detection of recurrent melanoma and/or second primary lesions is crucial to improve clinical outcomes. However, there is a lack of universal guidelines regarding both frequency of surveillance visits and diagnostic imaging and/or laboratory evaluations. In this article, a multidisciplinary expert panel recommends, after careful review of relevant data in the field, a consensus- and experience-based follow-up strategy for melanoma patients, taking into account prognostic factors and biomarkers and the high-risk periods and patterns of recurrence in each (sub) stage of the disease. Apart from the surveillance intensity, healthcare professionals should focus on patients' education to perform regular self-examinations of the skin and palpation of lymph nodes. - Abstract
Background: Cardio myoblast generation from conventional approaches is laborious and time-consuming. We present a bioelectronics on-a-chip for stimulating cells cardio myoblast proliferation during culture. Method: The bioelectronics chip fabrication methodology involves two different process. In the first step, an aluminum layer of 200 nm is deposited over a soda-lime glass substrate using physical vapor deposition and selectively removed using a Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser to create the electric tracks. To perform the experiments, we developed a biochip composed of a cell culture chamber fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a glass coverslip or a cell culture dish placed over the electric circuit tracks. By using such a glass cover slip or cell culture dish we avoid any toxic reactions caused by electrodes in the culture or may be degraded by electrochemical reactions with the cell medium, which is crucial to determine the effective cell-device coupling. Results: The chip was used to study the effect of electric field stimulation of Rat ventricular cardiomyoblasts cells (H9c2). Results shows a remarkable increase in the number of H9c2 cells for the stimulated samples, where after 72 h the cell density double the cell density of control samples. Conclusions: Cell proliferation of Rat ventricular cardiomyoblasts cells (H9c2) using the bioelectronics-on-a-chip was enhanced upon the electrical stimulation. The dependence on the geometrical characteristics of the electric circuit on the peak value and homogeneity of the electric field generated are analyzed and proper parameters to ensure a homogeneous electric field at the cell culture chamber are obtained. It can also be observed a high dependence of the electric field on the geometry of the electrostimulator circuit tracks and envisage the potential applications on electrophysiology studies, monitoring and modulate cellular behavior through the application of electric fields

- Abstract
This study explored the viability of synthesising nanolime at ambient temperature by raising calcium solubility through the formation of complexes with dissolved sugars. Micro-Raman fndings confrmed the formation of nanolime particles whilst the percentage of Ca(OH)2 formed, observed to vary with synthesis conditions, was calculated with thermogravimetry. Nanoparticles were synthesised most productively (77%) in a 5% sugary solution at a temperature of 25 °C and a 4 h reaction time. The hexagonal nanoparticles synthesised ranged in size from 200 to 25 nm. Portlandite formation is related to calcium complex formation with less mannitol that sucrose needed to form similar NPs of Ca(OH)2. The sugary media also favoured the formation of amorphous calcium carbonate.

The objective is to identify obstetric and perinatal factors that could be significant predictors of ASD and may lead to early detection and intervention. A population-based case–control study including 128 children diagnosed with ASD and 311 controls was conducted. Information was collected through self-reported questionnaires. The factors retained as significant predictors for ASD in the final adjusted hierarchical logistic regression model were cesarean section and male gender. The study revealed a higher incidence of cesarean sections and male gender in children with ASD in comparison to unaffected children confirming the results of previous studies. Children born by cesarean section, especially males, should be more closely monitored for the presence of ASD traits for early diagnosis and intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: A frequent complication after total hip arthroplasty is bleeding; to reduce it, intravenous or intra-articular tranexamic acid (TXA) is used. There is no evidence yet on which route of administration is better. Materials and method: This was a prospective, controlled, randomized study in 2 arms between February 2017 and February 2019. In group A, 15 mg/kg intravenous TXA was administered and in group B 2 g intra-articular TXA. Haemoglobin and haematocrit values were evaluated at 24–72 h, also volume of drained blood, volume of blood lost, transfusions and complications. Results: A total of 195 patients were included: 110 in group A and 85 group B. Haemoglobin dropped 3.10 ± 1.32 g/dl in 24 h and 3.63 ± 1.41 g/dl at 72 h in group A; the haematocrit dropped 8.38 ± 4.67% in 24 h and 15.40 ± 4.39% in 72 h. In group B, haemoglobin dropped 3.09 ± 1.40 g/dl in 24 h and 3.34 ± 1.23 g/dl in 72 h and haematocrit 9.75 ± 3.95% and 10.40 ± 3.72% in 24 and 72 h. No significant differences were found for haemoglobin values at 24 and 72 h and haematocrit at 24 h (p > 0.05); we did not obtain statistically significant differences in drainage, blood loss between groups or in the proportion of transfused. When stratifying the results by age, we obtained significant differences in the decrease in haemoglobin (p = 0.021) and haematocrit (p = 0.025) in patients > 65 years. Conclusions: The different routes of administration of TXA in PTC have a similar effect in reducing post-operative bleeding without evidencing an increase in complications. Level of evidence: I. - Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of cervical radiography in the study of patients with vertigo and dizziness. Patients: This is a retrospective single-institution case series study of 493 patients suffering from vertigo and dizziness who were referred (from January 2011 to December 2012) to the hospital to study those symptoms. Methods: We studied cervical radiographies, CT and MRI of the cervical spine made in the sample and the radiological findings. We analyzed demographic characteristics, presence of psychiatric pathology and emergency assistance due to vertigo in patients who have undergone cervical study. Results: A total of 57% of patients had cervical radiography made; this was more frequent in women, Spanish people, with psychiatric pathology and who have gone to the emergency department for vertigo (p < 0.05). Degenerative changes were found in 74.1% of the patients with radiography made, more frequently at an older age, osteophytes in 49.5% and abnormal cervical lordosis in 37.1%. Conclusions: There are sociodemographic factors that influence in the request for cervical radiographs in patients with vertigo and dizziness. Given the suspicion of cervical vertigo, we do not consider that the findings in the radiographs help in the diagnosis. In our opinion, an excessive use of cervical radiography is made in patients with vertigo and dizziness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The growth of epitaxial {001}<100> SrTiO (STO) on low-cost cube-textured Cu-based clad substrate at low temperature was carried out by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). STO film was deposited in one step under a reducing atmosphere (5% H and 95% Ar mixture) to prevent the oxidation of the metal surface. The optimization of PLD parameters leads to a sharpest biaxial texture at a temperature as low as 500 °C and a thickness of 500 nm with a (100) STO layer. The upper limit of highly textured STO thickness was also investigated. The maximum thickness which retains the best quality {001}<100> texture is 800 nm, since the texture is preserved not only through the layer but also on the surface. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements showed that STO films are continuous, dense, and smooth with very low roughness (between 5 and 7 nm). This paper describes the development of STO layer by means of PLD in absence of oxygen throughout the process, suggesting an alternative and effective method for growing highly {001}<100> textured STO layer on low-cost metal substrates.

- Abstract
Background: Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a sign of advanced disease of poor prognosis. As natural killer (NK) cells are involved in the first line of tumour defence, we aimed to validate a new diagnostic and prognostic indicator for MPE based on NK subpopulations of pleural fluid (PF) and peripheral blood (PB).Methods: NK subpopulations were determined in PF and PB in 71 patients with malignant, paramalignant or benign pleural effusion. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, Kaplan-Meier, multivariable Cox model and decision trees created with the CHAID (Chi-square automatic interaction detector) methodology were employed. Results: We demonstrated that the PF/PB ratios of the CD56 bright CD16− and CD56 dim CD16− NK subpopulations were higher (p = 0.013 and p = 0.003, respectively) in MPEs and paramalignant pleural effusions (PPEs) than in benign ones, with an AUC of 0.757 and 0.741, respectively. The PF/PB ratio of CD16+ NK and CD57+ NK obtained a higher hazard ratio (HR) in the crude Cox's regression analysis. In the adjusted Cox's regression analysis, the PF/PB ratio of CD16+ NK gave the highest HR (HR 6.1 [1.76-21.1]) (p = 0.004). In the decision tree created for the MPE prognosis, we observed that the main predictor variable among the studied clinical, radiological, and analytical variables was lung mass, and that 92.9% of the patients who survived had a PF/PB ratio of the CD56 dim CD16+ NK subpopulation ≤ 0.43.Conclusions: Our data suggest that both the PF/PB ratios of cytotoxic subpopulations CD57+ NK and CD16+ NK are useful as a prognostic factor of MPE. Other subpopulations (CD56 bright CD16− and CD56 dim CD16− NK) could help to diagnose MPE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective was to assess aseptic complications and functional outcome using a primary total hip arthroplasty with modular neck. Methods: Prospective cohort of 317 consecutive patients. The mean age was 61.1 (range, 41-84) years. The H-Max-M model (Lima, Italy) system was used in all patients. The functional assessment was made by the Harris Hip Score, Short Form-36 (SF-36), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index and visual analogue scale for pain. Radiological outcomes were also assessed, and adverse events and complications were noted. Results: The mean follow-up was 6.1 (range, 2-8) years. Functional outcome significantly improved in most patients. There were 3 deep infections (0.9%) and 17 aseptic complications (5.3%) including 1 intraoperative acetabular fracture, 3 later periprosthetic femoral fractures, 1 broken ceramic insert, 1 acetabular loosening, 3 femoral loosening and 1 broken titanium modular neck in a obese patient. No pseudotumors or elevated serum levels of metal ions were found among the patients with radiolucent lines or aseptic loosening. Conclusions: The findings in the present study showed that the H-MAX-M stem provided satisfactory functional outcome in most patients with a low rate of complications attributable to the modular neck design. We consider that using this novel modular neck-stem coupling design can be an alternative to the conventional monoblock stems in patients without overweight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COMMUNITY-acquired pneumonia ,MORTALITY ,BARTHEL Index ,SEVERITY of illness index ,OBSTRUCTIVE lung diseases - Abstract
Background: The baseline health status may be a determinant of interest in the evolution of pneumonia. Objective: Our objective was to assess the predictive ability of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) mortality by combining the Barthel Index (BI) and Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) in patients aged ≥ 65 years.Design, Patients and Main Measures: In this prospective, observational, multicenter analysis of comorbidities, the clinical data, additional examinations and severity of CAP were measured by the PSI and functional status by the BI. Two multivariable models were generated: Model 1 including the PSI and BI and model 2 with PSI plus BI stratified categorically.Key Results: The total population was 1919 patients, of whom 61% had severe pneumonia (PSI IV-V) and 40.4% had some degree of dependence (BI ≤ 90 points). Mortality in the PSI V-IV group was 12.5%. Some degree of dependence was associated with increased mortality in both the mild (7.2% vs. 3.2%; p = 0.016) and severe (14% vs. 3.3%; p < 0.001) pneumonia groups. The combination of PSI IV-V and BI ≤ 90 was the greatest risk factor for mortality (aOR 4.17; 95% CI 2.48 to 7.02) in our series. Conclusions: The use of a bimodal model to assess CAP mortality (PSI + BI) provides more accurate prognostic information than the use of each index separately. Background: The usefulness of clinical, radiological and pleural fluid analytical parameters for diagnosing malignant and paramalignant pleural effusion is not clearly stated. Hence this study aimed to identify possible predictor variables of diagnosing malignancy in pleural effusion of unknown aetiology. Methods: Clinical, radiological and pleural fluid analytical parameters were obtained from consecutive patients who had suffered pleural effusion of unknown aetiology. They were classified into three groups according to their final diagnosis: malignant, paramalignant and benign pleural effusion. The CHAID (Chi-square automatic interaction detector) methodology was used to estimate the implication of the clinical, radiological and analytical variables in daily practice through decision trees. Results: Of 71 patients, malignant ( n = 31), paramalignant ( n = 15) and benign ( n = 25), smoking habit, dyspnoea, weight loss, radiological characteristics (mass, node, adenopathies and pleural thickening) and pleural fluid analytical parameters (pH and glucose) distinguished malignant and paramalignant pleural effusions (all with a p < 0.05). Decision tree 1 classified 77.8% of malignant and paramalignant pleural effusions in step 2. Decision tree 2 classified 83.3% of malignant pleural effusions in step 2, 73.3% of paramalignant pleural effusions and 91.7% of benign ones. Conclusions: The data herein suggest that the identified predictor values applied to tree diagrams, which required no extraordinary measures, have a higher rate of correct identification of malignant, paramalignant and benign effusions when compared to techniques available today and proved most useful for usual clinical practice. Future studies are still needed to further improve the classification of patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Gypsum-based mortars were widely used during the Mudejar artistic period in Spain from the 12th to 16th century. During restoration works, compatibility between the new repair mortars and the original components is essential for an adequate intervention on the monument. The increasing interest of knowing the properties of the gypsum-lime-based mortars for restoration purposes justifies the research carried out. Different mortars compatible with traditional building materials were elaborated by varying the binder proportions, the type of aggregates, the binder/aggregate ratios and the curing time. The main goal of this paper is to characterize the mechanical behaviour and the pore structure of the mortars as a function of curing time. The influence between the different variables used to prepare the mortars and the development of the carbonation process over time is also considered. Mechanical strength and porosity measurements as well as X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis were performed after curing times of 1, 28 and 90 days. The results obtained confirmed a progressive increase in mechanical strength linked to the carbonation of the mortars prepared. Less lime binder and also aggregate contents showed the highest rise in strength over time, related to the highest initial porosity which favoured the carbon dioxide flow. The use of siliceous aggregates (GL-QS mortars) obtained the best results in the development of physico-mechanical properties over curing time. The knowledge obtained from the studied mortars provides practical information to establish a suitable mortar mixture for restoration works on historic buildings and modern architecture where gypsum-lime-based mortars are used. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

- Abstract
The composition, structure and properties of the reaction product resulting from the alkali activation of metakaolin (MK) are directly impacted by the specific surface and composition of the initial kaolin and the type, concentration and relative amount of alkali activator used. This study aimed to analyze the effect of these parameters on the flexural strength, degree of reaction, porosity and chemical and mineralogical composition of alkali-activated metakaolin pastes. Two types of metakaolin with different specific surfaces were activated under hydrothermal conditions (85 °C, 2 h) using solutions consisting of waterglass and Na(OH) as activators (Na concentrations = 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20 M) and two metakaolin/solution ratios. Regression analysis was used to quantify the effect of the parameters tested (activator concentration and MK/solution ratio) on flexural strength. Mathematical models were likewise built to relate the degree of reaction and amount of sodium fixed in the polymer structure to the synthesis parameters. According to 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, XRD, FTIR, DTA/TG data and chemical analysis, the material obtained by activating two MKs with waterglass plus NaOH was an amorphous hydrated sodium aluminosilicate in which a Q4 Si (3Al) type three-dimensional structure predominated, i.e., a structure where three Al atoms are connected to SiO4 tetrahedra. The alkaline ions in the structure maintain the electrical balance. The general formula obtained for this inorganic polymer was Na2O·3SiO2·Al2O3·3H2O.

- Abstract
The study explored the compatibility between the main product of Portland cement hydration and the main product of the alkali activation of fly ash: C–S–H and N–A–S–H gels, respectively. Both gels were synthesized with laboratory reagents at different pH values. Blends of the two were synthesized as well, using the sol–gel procedure. All the gels were characterized with Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR). The gels synthesized with this procedure were shown to precipitate together with a silica-rich gel. In addition, the pH level was found to play a determinant role in both C–S–H and N–A–S–H gel synthesis. The C–S–H gel is the major phase formed at pH > 11 and N–A–S–H gel for pH > 12. The results relating to the joint synthesis of the two (C–S–H and N–A–S–H) gels were not conclusive. Technique used for the characterization failed to differentiate between them in the blended material.

We compared anthropometric values, nutrient intake, the Healthy Eating Index and food variety in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), 20 on a gluten-free casein-free (GFCF) diet and 85 on a regular diet in Valencia (Spain) using 3-days food diaries. Those on the GFCF diet had a lower weight, body mass index, and total energy, pantothenic acid, calcium, phosphorus and sodium intake, but a higher intake of fiber, legumes, and vegetables. Further, the GFCF diet group had a better quality of fat intake, but needed supplementation with vitamin D. Randomized controlled trials are required to explore long-term effects of this diet on anthropometric and nutritional status (the focus of our study), but also behavioral symptoms, in children with ASD. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have problems of food selectivity, implying risks of nutritional deficiencies. The aim was to compare intakes of macro and micronutrients and body mass index in ASD and typically developing (TD) children. In a case-control study, 3-day food diaries and anthropometric measurements were completed for ASD (n = 40) and TD (n = 113) children (aged 6-10 years) living in the same area. Body mass indices were below the 5th percentile in 20 % of ASD versus 8.85 % of TD children. We found intakes were lower for fluoride ( p = 0.017) and higher for vitamin E ( p = 0.001). There was limited food variety and inadequacy of some intakes suggests that routine monitoring of ASD children should include assessment of their dietary habits, as well as anthropometric measurements. - Abstract
[EN] The influence of KOH presence on the evolution of hydration and carbonation of high alumina cement mortars at two different curing temperatures (4 and 40 ~ has been studied. It has been confirmed that hydration reactions at both temperatures are accelerated with KOH presence and it has a great influence on hydrated and carbonated species. The massive deposition of carbonation products leads, in all cases to a decrease in mortar porosity which leads to an increase of mechanical strengths.

- Abstract
Background: Lung hypoplasia, pulmonary persistent hypertension of the newborn and its morphological changes are the main features in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study was undertaken to investigate if antenatal use of sildenafil and/or bosentan attenuates vascular remodeling, promotes branching, and improves alveolarization in experimental nitrofeninduced CDH. Methods: Nitrofen (100 mg) was gavage-fed to pregnant rats at post conception day (PCD) 9 to induce CDH. The rats were randomized to 5 groups: 1) control; 2) nitrofen; 3) nitrofen+sildenafil 100 mg/kg per day at PCD 16-20; 4) nitrofen+bosentan 30 mg/kg per day, at PCD 16-20, and 5) nitrofen+bosentan+sildenafil, same doses and administration days. After cesarean delivery, the offsprings were sacrificed. The diaphragmatic defect and pulmonary hypoplasia were identified, and the lungs were dissected. Arterial wall thickness, bronchiolar density and alveolarization were assessed. Results: The offsprings with CDH were characterized by severe pulmonary hypoplasia (lung weight-to-body weight ratio: 0.0263 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.0242-0.0278)] in the nitrofen group versus 0.0385 (95% CI 0.0355-0.0424) in the control group ( P=0.0001). Pulmonary arterial wall thickness was decreased to 3.0 (95% CI 2.8-3.7) μm in the nitrofen+sildenafil group versus 5.0 (95% CI 4.1-4.9) μm in the nitrofen group ( P=0.02). Terminal bronchioles increased to 13.7 (95% CI 10.7-15.2) μm in the nitrofen+bosentan group in contrast to 8.7 (95% CI 7.2-9.4) μm in the nitrofen group ( P=0.002). More significant differences ( P=0.0001) were seen in terminal bronchioles in the nitrofen+sildenafil+bosentan group than in the nitrofen group [14.0 (95% CI 12.5-15.4) μm versus 8.5 (95% CI 7.1-9.3) μm]. Pulmonary arterial wall thickness was also decreased in the former group. Conclusions: In this rat model, antenatal treatment with sildenafil attenuates vascular remodeling. Bosentan promotes the development of terminal bronchioles in nitrofen-induced CDH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the main characteristics of non-vaccinated pregnant women who were hospitalised for influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 pandemic versus pregnant women hospitalised for non-influenza-related reasons in Spain, and to characterise the clinical presentation of the disease in this population to facilitate early diagnosis and future action programmes. Understanding influenza infection during pregnancy is important as pregnant women are a high-risk population for increased morbidity from influenza infection. We investigated the socio-demographic and clinical features of 51 non-vaccinated, pregnant women infected with the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus in Spain (cases) and compared them to 114 controls (non-vaccinated and non-infected pregnant women) aged 15-44 years. Substantial and significant odd ratios (ORs) for pandemic influenza A (H1N1) were found for the pregnant women who were obese compared with controls (body mass index > 30) (OR 3.03; 95 % confidence intervals 1.13-8.11). The more prevalent symptoms observed in pandemic influenza-infected pregnant women were high temperature, cough (82.4 %), malaise (80.5 %), myalgia (56.1 %), and headaches (54.9 %). Our results suggest that the initial symptoms and risk factors for infection of pregnant women with the influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 virus are similar to the symptoms and risk factors for seasonal influenza, which make early diagnosis difficult, and reinforces the need to identify and protect high-risk groups. Different binders of Portland cement, calcium aluminate cement and calcium sulphate (PC/CAC/C $$ {\bar{\text{S}}} $$ ) have been investigated to determinate the influence the CAC and C $$ {\bar{\text{S}}} $$ amount in the reactions mechanism. Several mixtures were studied, ratios of 100, 85/15 and 75/25 of PC/CAC with 0, 3 and 5 % of C $$ {\bar{\text{S}}} $$ . Conduction calorimetric technique was used to follow the hydration during 100 h. The XRD and FTIR techniques were used as support in the analysis of the hydration products. The results have shown that the studied ternary systems form an extra amount of ettringite, and changes in the reactions mechanism with respect to a PC. The reactions mechanism depends on the CAC and C $$ {\bar{\text{S}}} $$ amount present in the different binders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objective of this study was two fold: to identify gynecological characteristics that distinguish women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer from those at more advanced stages; to identify distinguishing characteristics between premenopasual and postmenopausal women diagnosed with the same stage. 186 incident cases diagnosed with breast cancer were identified out of the 685 patients who were seen to in 2000–2001. The variables to be studied were obtained by means of a specific questionnaire which collected data concerning reproductive characteristics and contraceptive types. Significant differences in the mean age were found, since the early-stage group was younger (57.01±12.82 vs. 65.06±15.11). Characteristical factors found in pre-menopausal women were: early menopause, they either had no children or a single child, no breastfeeding practice and a more extensive use of contraceptives. Postmenopausal women presented more advanced stages, more pregnancies and less abortions. By taking the obtained results into consideration, it would be recommendable to bring forward the age at which women are to be included in early detection programmes, and to conduct a follow-up of those women who present such factors to favour an earlier diagnosis of the disease. 42. Comparable seropositivity for ascariasis and toxocariasis in tropical slum children.

- Abstract
The seropositivities for infection by Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis were determined in children (1-15 years old) of a slum area of Caracas, Venezuela, and the levels that indicate the presence of active infection were defined. In children aged from 1 to 3 years, approximately 10% were positive for either parasite, and this figure increased to about 30% in 4- to 6-year-olds. For toxocariasis, the percentage of positivity remained at this level up to the age of 15 years. Whilst the positivity in children 10-15 years of age was comparable for Ascaris and Toxocara, a peak of positivity (50%) was found for Ascaris at 7-9 years of age. These results indicate that for these urban slum children, infection by Toxocara is essentially as common as that by Ascaris and, thus, that toxocariasis represents a potential public health problem in the tropical environment that is largely overlooked. Human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells (hESCs and hiPSCs) are self-renewing human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) that can differentiate to a wide range of specialized cells. Notably, hPSCs enhance their undifferentiated state and self-renewal properties in hypoxia (5% O
2 ). Although thoroughly analyzed, hypoxia implication in hPSCs death is not fully determined. In order to evaluate the effect of chemically mimicked hypoxia on hPSCs cell survival, we analyzed changes in cell viability and several aspects of apoptosis triggered by CoCl2 and dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG). Mitochondrial function assays revealed a decrease in cell viability at 24 h post-treatments. Moreover, we detected chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation and CASPASE-9 and 3 cleavages. In this context, we observed that P53, BNIP-3, and NOXA protein expression levels were significantly up-regulated at different time points upon chemical hypoxia induction. However, only siRNA-mediated downregulation of NOXA but not HIF-1α, HIF-2α, BNIP-3, and P53 did significantly affect the extent of cell death triggered by CoCl2 and DMOG in hPSCs. In conclusion, chemically mimicked hypoxia induces hPSCs cell death by a NOXA-mediated HIF-1α and HIF-2α independent mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
