In the present study, estimation of the atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was done in particulate samples collected from De Haan, Belgium, during different seasons. The sampling site was situated very close to the north sea and far from the influence of local or industrial activities. The levels of PAHs depicted a distinct seasonal trend, being highest during the spring season. The observations of the study indicated a mean value of 2.6 ng m−3 for concentration of all the 16 US EPA PAHs, thus being significantly lower when compared to results of previous studies focused on other sites. The dominating PAHs species reported were naphthalene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, and indeno[1,2,3c,d] pyrene. Assessment of the seasonal variation of the PAH levels was also done with respect to diagnostic ratio-based source identification, analysis of back trajectories, and principle component analysis. Burning of fossil fuels was observed to be the prominent source of atmospheric PAHs in the study area. Further, lifetime cancer risk assessment was performed to assess the detrimental health impacts on humans on being exposed to atmospheric PAHs. Particulate PAHs present in the ambient air of Belgium shows no carcinogenic health impacts. Soils are complex mixtures of organic, inorganic materials, and metal compounds from anthropogenic sources. In order to identify the pollution sources, their magnitude and development, several X-ray analytical methods were applied in this study. The concentrations of 16 elements were determined in all the soil samples using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Soils of unknown origin were observed by scanning electron microscopy equipped with a Si(Li) X-ray detector using Monte Carlo simulation approach. The mineralogical analyses were carried out using X-ray diffraction spectrometry. Due to the correlations between heavy metals and oxide compounds, the samples were analyzed also by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) in order to have information about their oxide contents. On the other hand, soil pH and salinity levels were identified owing to their influence between heavy metal and soil-surface chemistry. Moreover, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) enables the assessment of contamination by comparing current and pre-industrial concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new European Council Directive (PE-CONS 3696/07) frames the inhalable (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5) on priority to chemically characterize these fractions in order to understand their possible relation with health effects. Considering this, PM2.5 was collected during four different seasons to evaluate the relative abundance of bulk elements (Cl, S, Si, Al, Br, Cu, Fe, Ti, Ca, K, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cr and V) and water soluble ions (F−, Cl−, NO2 −, NO3 −, SO4 2−, Na+, NH4 +, Ca2+ and Mg2+) over Menen, a Belgian city near the French border. The air quality over Menen is influenced by industrialized regions on both sides of the border. The most abundant ionic species were NO3 −, SO4 2− and NH4 +, and they showed distinct seasonal variation. The elevated levels of NO3 − during spring and summer were found to be related to the larger availability of the NOx precursor. The various elemental species analyzed were distinguished into crustal and anthropogenic source categories. The dominating elements were S and Cl in the PM2.5 particles. The anthropogenic fraction (e.g. Zn, Pb, and Cu) shows a more scattered abundance. Furthermore, the ions and elemental data were also processed using principal component analysis and cluster analysis to identify their sources and chemistry. These approach identifies anthropogenic (traffic and industrial) emissions as a major source for fine particles. The variations in the natural/anthropogenic fractions of PM2.5 were also found to be a function of meteorological conditions as well as of long-range transport of air masses from the industrialized regions of the continent. Digital image processing is applied to X-ray element maps and back-scattered electron (BSE) images obtained with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), to quantify and identify salts and porosity with depth in porous media. Until now, only salt chemical composition with depth has been characterised and salt mineral composition inferred, so that no salt quantification was possible. The method we present can be used stand-alone or integrated with other techniques to fill certain gaps in our knowledge. It can be used to quantify texture and porosity of clay minerals, with implications in petroleum research. Also, salts may be identified and quantified with depth in porous media; this is important when selecting among salt extraction procedures in order to conserve cultural heritage. Finally, the method can help in interpreting salt weathering processes and links between stone decay forms at different scales, with consequences for geomorphology. To demonstrate the method, salt and pore percentages with depth are determined in two limestone types from monuments in the Aunis province, SW France: i) Crazannes sparite, showing alveolisation and black crust, and ii) La Pallice micrite, suffering from micro-delamination. In most of the micrites no salts are identified. Porosity data show that micro-fissures are confined between the surface and 9 mm depth in LPAM5, the only micrite with loading salts with depth (NaCl = 1.9% at the surface versus 1.4% at 18 mm; and Na2SO4 · H2O and MgCl2 ∼ 0.02% in the first 3 mm). In the sparites, those samples with no crust display an alveolisation zone with lower porosity and higher diversity and percentage of salts. In CRZM6, the stone crust-alveolisation front lies at a depth of 9 mm. In the crust, porosity is lower than in the alveolisation zone (12%). Salt concentration, by contrast, is higher in the crust (2.91% versus 0.14% in the alveolisation zone). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An intercomparison survey has been carried out in order to evaluate the performance of two related X-ray fluorescence techniques as compared to the achievements of several other analytical techniques applied for trace elements determination in drinking water. A relatively new technique, total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) and a novel related technique, grazing emission X-ray fluorescence (GEXRF) have been used for the analysis of a mineral water sample. The concentrations of the following elements have been determined: Na, Mg, K, Ca, Ni, Cu, Zn and Sr. The mineral water sample has also been analyzed by a number of other analytical techniques, routinely utilized in drinking water quality control. The analyses were performed in eleven laboratories which reported 286 individual determinations producing 75 laboratory means. From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the TXRF technique is suitable for a direct determination of heavy elements in drinking water (above potassium, Z = 19). This technique can compete with other analytical techniques routinely used in water quality monitoring. First results obtained with GEXRF spectrometry show that this technique can be successfully applied for the determination of low-Z elements in drinking water. However, results for sodium and magnesium were systematically too low, indicating that modifications of the quantification procedure may be required to improve the accuracy of determination for these light elements.
