Over 700,000 people die by suicide annually. Collecting longitudinal fine-grained data about at-risk individuals, as they occur in the real world, can enhance our understanding of the temporal dynamics of suicide risk, leading to better identification of those in need of immediate intervention. Self-assessment questionnaires were collected over time from 89 at-risk individuals using the EMMA smartphone application. An artificial intelligence (AI) model was trained to assess current level of suicidal ideation (SI), an early indicator of the suicide risk, and to predict its progression in the following days. A key challenge was the unevenly spaced and incomplete nature of the time series data. To address this, the AI was built on a missing value imputation algorithm. The AI successfully distinguished high SI levels from low SI levels both on the current day (AUC = 0.804, F1 = 0.625, MCC = 0.459) and three days in advance (AUC = 0.769, F1 = 0.576, MCC = 0.386). Besides past SI levels, the most significant questions were related to psychological pain, well-being, agitation, emotional tension, and protective factors such as contacts with relatives and leisure activities. Functional dissociative seizures (FDSs) are clinical events that resemble epileptic seizures but are not associated with abnormal brain electrical discharges or other physiological problems. In this pilot case series, ten adults with FDSs were recruited from our psychiatry department after being referred by a neurologist who made the diagnosis of FDS based on video EEG results. Each subject received ten sessions of cathodal tDCS focused on the right temporoparietal junction. A significant decrease in weekly seizure frequency was seen in all participants between baseline (30.2 ± 70.3 events) and 1 month after tDCS treatment (0.2 ± 0.3events) (p = 0.006). A body of research indicates that people are prone to overestimate the affective impact of future events. Here, we developed a novel experimental paradigm to study these affective forecasting biases under laboratory conditions using subjective (arousal and valence) and autonomic measures (skin conductance responses, SCRs, and heart rate). Thirty participants predicted their emotional responses to 15 unpleasant, 15 neutral, and 15 pleasant scenarios (affective forecasting phase) to which they were then exposed in virtual reality (emotional experience phase). Results showed that participants anticipated more extreme arousal and valence scores than they actually experienced for unpleasant and pleasant scenarios. The emotional experience phase was characterized by classic autonomic patterns, i.e., higher SCRs for emotionally arousing scenarios and greater peak cardiac acceleration for pleasant scenarios. During the affective forecasting phase, we found only a moderate association between arousal scores and SCRs and no valence-dependent modulation of cardiac activity. This paradigm opens up new perspectives for investigating affective forecasting abilities under lab-controlled conditions, notably in psychiatric disorders with anxious anticipations. Women with alcohol use disorder (AUD) might be particularly vulnerable to psychiatric comorbidities. However, population surveys have yielded disparate findings. We used data from the French Mental Health in the General Population survey to investigate gender-related risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. A cross-sectional survey based on face-to-face interviews, including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, was conducted among 38,717 subjects. Logistic regression models were used to assess risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. After adjustment for socio-demographics and other psychiatric disorders, both women and men with AUD were at higher risk of comorbid depressive disorder (odds ratio [OR] = 2.6, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.0–3.4 in women, and OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.7–2.4 in men), bipolar I disorder (2.5; 1.4–4.4 in women vs. 2.6; 1.9–3.4 in men), and psychotic disorder (1.6; 1.01–2.5 in women vs. 1.8; 1.4–2.3 in men). Women with AUD exhibited an increased risk of comorbid panic disorder (OR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1–2.2) while the increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was significant in men only (OR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.6–4.2). The increased risk of comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) was more elevated in women, compared to men (12.9; 8.1–18.1 vs. 4.8; 4.0–5.8 in men). Most of psychiatric conditions were over-represented in both women and men with AUD, relative to controls. The objective of this study was to examine the evolution of suicides and suicide attempts over the last 10 years in France. We analyzed the number of deaths by suicide and suicide attempts in metropolitan France (2009–2018) from French national databases, on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Seasonal variation in suicide rates was modeled using a cosinor function. Based on this model, we determined the association of suicides and suicide attempts with geographic characteristics, age, gender, means used and psychiatric disorders. The number of suicides and suicide attempts decreased over the last ten years in France (mean decrease of 14.49% and 11.69% per year). We observed a significant and recurrent seasonal pattern of suicides and suicide attempts in France, with a peak in spring. The suicide and suicide attempt rates were higher in the northern departments of France. Suicides were more frequent for men (75%) and middle-age individuals (45–54 years old), while suicide attempts were more frequent for women (62%) and young adults and middle-age individual (15–19 and 40–49 years old). Nearly two-thirds of the patients who attempted suicide suffered from comorbid psychiatric disorders. Mood disorders was the most frequent comorbid psychiatric disorder (54%). Voluntary drug intoxication was the most common means of suicide attempt (80%), and hanging was the most common means of suicide (54%). The number of suicides and suicide attempts decreased in France over the last 10 years, with large and recurrent seasonal variations. We aimed to examine the association between religious beliefs and observance and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders, psychotic symptoms and history of suicide attempts in the French general population. The cross-sectional survey interviewed 38,694 subjects between 1999 and 2003, using the MINI. Current religious beliefs and observance were identified by means of two questions: "are you a believer?" and "are you religiously observant?". We studied the association between religiosity and psychiatric outcomes using a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, including migrant status. Religious beliefs were positively associated with psychotic symptoms and disorders [OR = 1.37, 95% CI (1.30–1.45) and OR = 1.38, 95% CI (1.20–1.58)], unipolar depressive disorder [OR = 1.15, 95% CI (1.06–1.23)] and generalized anxiety disorder [OR = 1.13, 95% CI (1.06–1.21)], but negatively associated with bipolar disorder [OR = 0.83, 95% CI (0.69–0.98)], alcohol use disorders [OR = 0.69, 95% CI (0.62–0.77)], substance use disorders [OR = 0.60, 95% CI (0.52–0.69)] and suicide attempts [OR = 0.90, 95% CI (0.82–0.99)]. Religious observance was positively associated with psychotic symptoms and disorders [OR = 1.38, 95% CI (1.20–1.58) and OR = 1.25, 95% CI (1.07–1.45)], but negatively associated with social anxiety disorder [OR = 0.87, 95% CI (0.76–0.99)], alcohol use disorders [OR = 0.60, 95% CI (0.51–0.70)], substance use disorders [OR = 0.48, 95% CI (0.38–0.60)] and suicide attempts [OR = 0.80, 95% CI (0.70–0.90)]. Among believers, religious observance was not associated with psychotic outcomes. Religiosity appears to be a complex and bidirectional determinant of psychiatric symptoms and disorders. This study aimed to investigate the time course of attentional bias for negative information in healthy individuals and to assess the associated influence of trait anxiety. Thirty-eight healthy volunteers performed an emotional dot-probe task with pairs of negative and neutral scenes, presented for either 1 or 2 s and followed by a target placed at the previous location of either negative or neutral stimulus. Analyses included eye movements during the presentation of the scenes and response times associated with target localization. In a second step, analyses focused on the influence of trait anxiety. While there was no significant difference at the behavioral level, the eye-tracking data revealed that negative information held longer attention than neutral stimuli once fixated. This initial maintenance bias towards negative pictures then increased with increasing trait anxiety. However, at later processing stages, only individuals with the highest trait anxiety appeared to fixate longer on negative pictures than neutral pictures, individuals with low trait anxiety showing the opposite pattern. We aimed to review and discuss the evidence-based arguments for the efficacy of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the treatment of catatonia. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies focusing on the response to ECT in catatonia were selected in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov and Current Controlled Trials through October 2016 and qualitatively described. Trials assessing pre-post differences using a catatonia or clinical improvement rating scale were pooled together using a random effect model. Secondary outcomes were adverse effects of anesthesia and seizure. 564 patients from 28 studies were included. RCTs were of low quality and were heterogeneous; therefore, it was not possible to combine their efficacy results. An improvement of catatonic symptoms after ECT treatment was evidenced in ten studies (SMD = −3.14, 95% CI [−3.95; −2.34]). The adverse effects that were reported in seven studies included mental confusion, memory loss, headache, or adverse effects associated with anesthesia. ECT protocols were heterogeneous. The literature consistently describes improvement in catatonic symptoms after ECT. However, the published studies fail to demonstrate efficacy and effectiveness. Purpose: No lifetime utilization of mental health treatment (NUMT) is an indicator of the treatment gap among people in need of treatment. Until now, the overall prevalence and predictors of NUMT have never been explored in France.Methods: In a 39,617-respondent survey, participants were assessed for NUMT, i.e., no lifetime psychotherapy, psychopharmacotherapy, or psychiatric hospitalization. Mental disorders were investigated using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI 5.0.0). MINI diagnoses were grouped into five categories: mood disorders (MDs); anxiety disorders (ADs); alcohol use disorders (AUDs); substance use disorders (SUDs); and psychotic disorders (PDs). Using multivariable logistic regression models, we explored the factors associated with NUMT among the MINI-positive respondents. The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated for each factor.Results: In total, 12,818 (32.4%) respondents were MINI-positive, 46.5% of them reported NUMT (35.6% for MDs, 39.7% for PDs, 42.8% for ADs, 56.0% for AUDs, and 56.7% for SUDs). NUMT was positively associated with being male [OR 1.75 (1.59-1.91)] and practising religion [OR 1.13 (1.02-1.25)] and negatively associated with ageing [per 10-year increase: OR 0.88 (0.85-0.91)], being single [OR 0.74 (0.66-0.84)], being a French native [OR 0.67 (0.60-0.75)], and experiencing MDs [OR 0.39 (0.36-0.43)], ADs [OR 0.47 (0.43-0.52)], AUDs [OR 0.83 (0.73-0.96)], SUDs [OR 0.77 (0.65-0.91)], or PDs [OR 0.50 (0.43-0.59)].Conclusions: In France, NUMT rates were the highest for AUDs and SUDs. Additionally, suffering from MDs or ADs increased the lifetime treatment utilization for people having any other mental disorder. Recent research has demonstrated the critical role of the feeling of familiarity in recognition memory. Various neuroimaging paradigms have been developed to identify the brain regions that sustain the processing of familiarity; however, there is still considerable controversy about the functional significance of each brain region implicated in familiarity-based retrieval. Here, we focused on the differences between paradigms that assess familiarity, with or without the encoding phase. We used the activation likelihood estimation (ALE) algorithm to conduct a whole-brain meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies that involved a familiarity task. Sixty-nine studies, performed in healthy subjects to determine the specific functions of the identified regions in familiarity processing, were finally selected. Distinct subanalyses were performed according to the experimental procedures used in the original studies. The ALE clusters that were highlighted revealed common activations for paradigms with and without encoding in the prefrontal cortex and in the parietal cortex. Additionally, supplementary activations related to specific familiarity (i.e., without the encoding phase) were observed in the limbic system (i.e., the amygdala, hippocampus, cingulate cortex, and insula) and in the associative sensory areas. The differences in the reported findings for different procedures are possibly due to differences in the concept of familiarity. To aid the exploration of the neural correlates of familiarity in future studies, the strengths and weaknesses of these experimental procedures are critically discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The mortality of people suffering from psychiatric illnesses is far higher than that of the general population, all categories of diagnosis combined; mortality statistics can be used as an index of quality of care. The aim of this study was to assess the all-cause mortality in psychiatric patients covering all diagnostic groups. Methods: The living or deceased status of 4,417 patients of majority age hospitalised in a public mental health establishment between 2004 and 2007 were requested from French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies on 1st January 2011. The cause of death of those people who had died was obtained from French National Institute for Health and Medical Research and comparative standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were established from the population in a region of northern France of the same age in 2006. Results: The study population was made up of 54 % men and 46 % women, median age 41 and 45 years old, respectively. Four hundred and seventy-three people died during the period studied. The SMR were 421 for men (95 % CI 378-470) and 330 for women (95 % CI 281-388). The highest SMRs were found in patients aged 35-54, with a 20-time higher mortality risk than the general population of the same age. Conclusion: Our study confirms the considerably higher mortality in psychiatric patients than in general population, particularly in mean age and mostly due to an unnatural cause.
