Core-collapse supernovae are explosions of massive stars at the end of their evolution. They are responsible for metal production and for halting star formation, having a significant impact on galaxy evolution. The details of these processes depend on the nature of supernova progenitors, but it is unclear if Type Ic supernovae (without hydrogen or helium lines in their spectra) originate from core-collapses of very massive stars (>30 M⊙) or from less massive stars in binary systems. Here we show that Type II (with hydrogen lines) and Ic supernovae are located in environments with similar molecular gas densities, therefore their progenitors have comparable lifetimes and initial masses. This supports a binary interaction for most Type Ic supernova progenitors, which explains the lack of hydrogen and helium lines. This finding can be implemented in sub-grid prescriptions in numerical cosmological simulations to improve the feedback and chemical mixing. Background: There is strong evidence supporting the association between environmental factors and increased risk of non-affective psychotic disorders. However, the use of sound statistical methods to account for spatial variations associated with environmental risk factors, such as urbanicity, migration, or deprivation, is scarce in the literature. Methods: We studied the geographical distribution of non-affective first-episode psychosis (NA-FEP) in a northern region of Spain (Navarra) during a 54-month period considering area-level socioeconomic indicators as putative explanatory variables. We used several Bayesian hierarchical Poisson models to smooth the standardized incidence ratios (SIR). We included neighborhood-level variables in the spatial models as covariates. Results: We identified 430 NA-FEP cases over a 54-month period for a population at risk of 365,213 inhabitants per year. NA-FEP incidence risks showed spatial patterning and a significant ecological association with the migrant population, unemployment, and consumption of anxiolytics and antidepressants. The high-risk areas corresponded mostly to peripheral urban regions; very few basic health sectors of rural areas emerged as high-risk areas in the spatial models with covariates. Discussion: Increased rates of unemployment, the migrant population, and consumption of anxiolytics and antidepressants showed significant associations linked to the spatial-geographic incidence of NA-FEP. These results may allow targeting geographical areas to provide preventive interventions that potentially address modifiable environmental risk factors for NA-FEP. Argonaute proteins are the central effectors of RNA-guided RNA silencing pathways in eukaryotes, playing crucial roles in gene repression and defense against viruses and transposons. Eukaryotic Argonautes are subdivided into two clades: AGOs generally facilitate miRNA- or siRNA-mediated silencing, while PIWIs generally facilitate piRNA-mediated silencing. It is currently unclear when and how Argonaute-based RNA silencing mechanisms arose and diverged during the emergence and early evolution of eukaryotes. Here, we show that in Asgard archaea, the closest prokaryotic relatives of eukaryotes, an evolutionary expansion of Argonaute proteins took place. In particular, a deep-branching PIWI protein (HrAgo1) encoded by the genome of the Lokiarchaeon 'Candidatus Harpocratesius repetitus' shares a common origin with eukaryotic PIWI proteins. Contrasting known prokaryotic Argonautes that use single-stranded DNA as guides and/or targets, HrAgo1 mediates RNA-guided RNA cleavage, and facilitates gene silencing when expressed in human cells and supplied with miRNA precursors. A cryo-EM structure of HrAgo1, combined with quantitative single-molecule experiments, reveals that the protein displays structural features and target-binding modes that are a mix of those of eukaryotic AGO and PIWI proteins. Thus, this deep-branching archaeal PIWI may have retained an ancestral molecular architecture that preceded the functional and mechanistic divergence of eukaryotic AGOs and PIWIs. Eukaryotic Argonaute proteins participate in RNA-guided RNA silencing pathways and are divided into AGO and PIWI clades, with functional and mechanistic differences. About one in four women in the US report having experienced some form of intimate partner violence (IPV) during their lifetime and an estimated 15.5 million children live in families in which IPV occurred in the past year. Families of young children with IPV experiences often face complex needs and require well-coordinated efforts among service providers across social and health sectors. One promising partnership aims to support pregnant and parenting IPV survivors through coordination between IPV agencies and community-based maternal and early childhood home visiting programs. This study used social network analysis (SNA) to understand the interconnectedness of the system of IPV prevention and intervention for families with young children in a large US city. The SNA included 43 agencies serving this population across various service domains spanning IPV, legal, maternal and child health, and public benefit programs. An SNA survey collected data on four forms of collaboration between agencies, including formal administrative relationship, referral reciprocity, case consultation, and shared activities in community committees/organizing bodies. Density and centrality were the primary outcomes of interest. A community detection analysis was performed as a secondary analysis. The overall level of interconnectedness between the 43 responding agencies was low. Making referrals to each other was the most common form of collaboration, with a network density of 30%. IPV agencies had the highest average number of connections in the networks. There was a high level of variation in external collaborations among home visiting agencies, with several home visiting agencies having very few connections in the community but one home visiting program endorsing collaborative relationships with upwards of 38 partner agencies in the network. In serving families at risk for IPV, home visiting agencies were most likely to have referral relationships with mental health provider agencies and substance use disorder service agencies. A community detection analysis identified distinct communities within the network and demonstrated that certain agency types were more connected to one another while others were typically siloed within the network. Notably, the IPV and home visiting communities infrequently overlapped. Sensitivity analyses showed that survey participants' knowledge of their agencies' external collaborations varied by their work roles and agencies overall had low levels of consensus about their connectedness to one another. We identified a heterogeneous service system available to families of young children at-risk for or experiencing IPV. Overall inter-agency connectedness was low, with many siloed agencies and a lack of shared knowledge of community resources. Understanding current collaborations, silos, and centrality of agencies is an effective public health tool for allocating scarce resources across diverse service sectors to efficiently improve the system serving families experiencing IPV. Demographic projections are important for Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability (IAV) assessments around climate change. When linked with physical models that delineate alternative outcomes of climate hazards, they lead to enhanced understanding of the location and size of the most vulnerable populations, thereby improving hot-spot analysis for more targeted intervention planning. These demographic projections should be consistent with the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) so their combination with climate projections offers a diverse set of perspectives for climate change risk assessments. Most SSP based projections have been developed at a national level, which mask local-scale heterogeneities. Mexico is a heterogeneous country in terms of climate hazards, demographic characteristics, aging population, and socioeconomic inequalities across regions and states. Thus, we translate the extended SSP scenarios to quantitative demographic assumptions based on regional distinct background conditions. We then use a multi-regional cohort component model to generate SSP-based demographic projections by gender and age for each Mexican state from 2020 to 2100. We also discuss several applications to highlight the added value of using spatially refined demographic projections for IAV analysis and targeted policymaking aimed at improving the resilience of Mexico’s population in relation to climate change. Our projections indicate that, under certain SSPs, domestic migration is a major driver of population change in some states. Our subnational SSP-based demographic projections are the first set of this type of projections for Mexico informed by regional differences in demographic processes, thereby enhancing the evaluation of medium-term and long-term effects of climate change in localized scales. Purpose: Trauma patients are rapidly transported to the hospital for definitive care. Nonetheless, some are alive upon Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrival but arrest on-scene or during transport. The study objective was to examine EMS-witnessed traumatic arrests to define patients who survived hospital discharge. Methods: Patients sustaining EMS-witnessed traumatic arrest and entered into the National Trauma Data Bank were included (2007–2018). Mortality defined groups: survival to hospital discharge vs. in-hospital death vs. death in ED/declared dead on arrival (DOA). ANOVA/Chi-square compared cohorts. Multivariable analysis established factors associated with survival out of ED and to hospital discharge. Results: After exclusions, 14,177 patients met the criteria: 10% survived, 22% died in hospital, and 68% died in ED/DOA. Survivors tended to be female (33% vs. 23% vs. 23%, p < 0.001), blunt traumas (71% vs. 56% vs. 60%, p < 0.001), have higher scene GCS (15 [7–15] vs. 3 [3–11] vs. 3 [3–7], p < 0.001), and lower injury severity (ISS 13 [7–26] vs. 27 [18–41] vs. 25 [10–30], p < 0.001), particularly of the head (AIS 0 [0–2] vs. 0 [0–4] vs. 1 [0–4], p < 0.001). Survival to hospital discharge was independently associated with higher field GCS (OR 1.252, p < 0.001) and SBP (OR 1.006, p < 0.001), and Head AIS scores (OR 1.073, p < 0.001). Increasing age (OR 0.984, p < 0.001), higher ISS (OR 0.975, p < 0.001), male sex (OR 0.695, p < 0.001), and penetrating mechanism of injury (OR 0.537, p < 0.001) were associated with reduced survival to discharge. Conclusion: After EMS-witnessed traumatic cardiac arrest, survivors were more likely to be young, female, injured by blunt trauma, and less hypotensive/comatose on-scene. Background: Clinical experience has shown that a single measure is not sufficient to assess disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Various clinimetric tools are necessary to address the many clinical situations that can arise. Methods: In order to develop a comprehensive measurement tool, the Pan American League of Associations for Rheumatology searched for the most frequent measures of disease activity applied in RA by means of a semi-systematic review of the available literature. Results: We found that the most frequently reported measures of disease activity were the 28-joint Disease Activity Score, C-reactive protein, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, followed by patient-reported measures of pain and stiffness and many other composite indices and patient-reported outcome measures. The most frequent physician-reported sign of disease was the swollen joint count, and the most frequently self-reported feature was the increase in disease activity or flares. Conclusion: In this article, we present a new clinimetric tool developed based on expert consensus and on data retrieved from our search. Disease activity can be better assessed by combining various data sources, such as clinical, laboratory, and self-reported outcomes. These variables were included in our novel clinimetric tool. Temporal sequences of satellite images constitute a highly valuable and abundant resource for analyzing regions of interest. However, the automatic acquisition of knowledge on a large scale is a challenging task due to different factors such as the lack of precise labeled data, the definition and variability of the terrain entities, or the inherent complexity of the images and their fusion. In this context, we present a fully unsupervised and general methodology to conduct spatio-temporal taxonomies of large regions from sequences of satellite images. Our approach relies on a combination of deep embeddings and time series clustering to capture the semantic properties of the ground and its evolution over time, providing a comprehensive understanding of the region of interest. The proposed method is enhanced by a novel procedure specifically devised to refine the embedding and exploit the underlying spatio-temporal patterns. We use this methodology to conduct an in-depth analysis of a 220 km 2 region in northern Spain in different settings. The results provide a broad and intuitive perspective of the land where large areas are connected in a compact and well-structured manner, mainly based on climatic, phytological, and hydrological factors. The impact of mechanical ventilation on airborne diseases is not completely known. The recent pandemic of COVID-19 clearly showed that additional investigations are necessary. The use of computational tools is an advantage that needs to be included in the study of designing safe places. The current study focused on a hospital lift where two subjects were included: a healthy passenger and an infected one. The elevator was modelled with a fan placed on the middle of the ceiling and racks for supplying air at the bottom of the lateral wall. Three ventilation strategies were evaluated: a without ventilation case, an upwards-blowing exhausting fan case and a downwards-blowing fan case. Five seconds after the elevator journey began, the infected person coughed. For the risk assessment, the CO2 concentration, droplet removal performance and dispersion were examined and compared among the three cases. The results revealed some discrepancies in the selection of an optimal ventilation strategy. Depending on the evaluated parameter, downward-ventilation fan or no ventilation strategy could be the most appropriate approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Classical statistical methods prove advantageous for small datasets, whereas machine learning algorithms can excel with larger datasets. Our paper challenges this conventional wisdom by addressing a highly significant problem: the identification of burned areas through satellite imagery, that is a clear example of imbalanced data. The methods are illustrated in the North-Central Portugal and the North-West of Spain in October 2017 within a multi-temporal setting of satellite imagery. Daily satellite images are taken from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products. Our analysis shows that a classical Logistic regression (LR) model competes on par, if not surpasses, a widely employed machine learning algorithm called the extreme gradient boosting algorithm (XGBoost) within this particular domain. Background: The use of mesh is the standard for the prevention of incisional hernia (IH). However, the effect of surgical site occurrence (SSO) has never been compared. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of SSO and measure its negative effect through the calculation of the number needed to treat for net effect (NNT net). Methods: A meta-analysis was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The primary objective was to determine the prevalence of SSO and IH, and the secondary objective was to determine the NNT net as a metric to measure the combined benefits and harms. Only published clinical trials were included. The risk of bias was analyzed, and the random effects model was used to determine statistical significance. Results: A total of 15 studies comparing 2344 patients were included. The incidence of IH was significantly lower in the mesh group than in the control group, with an OR of 0.29 (95% CI 0.16–0.49, p = 0.0001). The incidence of SSO was higher in the mesh group than in the control group, with an OR of 1.21 (95% CI 0.85–1.72, p = 0.0001) but without statistical significance. Therefore, the way to compare the benefits and risks of each of the studies was done with the calculation of the NNT net, which is the average number of patients who need to be treated to see the benefit exceeding the harm by one event, and the result was 5, which is the average number of patients who need to be treated to see the benefit exceeding the harm by one event. Conclusion: The use of mesh reduces the prevalence of IH and it does not increases the prevalence of SSO, the NNT net determined that the use of mesh continues to be beneficial for the patient. Background: To be socially robust, renewable energy policies aiming at achieving a low-carbon society require public support. Woody biomass is an important renewable energy source. It accounts for a large share of the renewable energy consumption in several EU countries. However, its sustainability credentials are contested. Little is known as yet about how the public perceives woody biomass. This paper aims to examine the public's intention to vote for continued use of woody biomass, and to find out whether this voting intention can be explained using the cognitive hierarchy model. This model posits that values, attitudes and beliefs predict higher order cognitions like intention. We extend the model by including an additional variable (perceived benefit). Although the model is widely used in connection with natural resource management issues, it has not yet been applied to the case of increasingly contested energy sources like woody biomass. We use Denmark as a case study given that woody biomass makes up the largest share of the renewable energy mix in the country. Results: Results of a nationwide questionnaire-based survey of the general public show that a large proportion of Danes are undecided about their attitudes towards, and their intention to vote for, woody biomass. Structural equation modeling results show that belief in the mitigation potential of woody biomass has a significant positive effect on both attitudes and voting intention. Altruistic and egoistic values have a significant positive effect on attitudes, which in turn have a significant positive influence on voting intention. We also confirm the mediating role of attitudes. Conclusions: Understanding public opinion-making processes can help to promote environmental decision-making that takes due account of public perceptions of the ways in which energy transitions come about. Plants produce a range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that mediate vital ecological interactions between herbivorous insects, their natural enemies, plants, and soil dwelling organisms including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The composition, quantity, and quality of the emitted VOCs can vary and is influenced by numerous factors such as plant species, variety (cultivar), plant developmental stage, root colonization by soil microbes, as well as the insect developmental stage, and level of specialization of the attacking herbivore. Understanding factors shaping VOC emissions is important and can be leveraged to enhance plant health and pest resistance. In this greenhouse study, we evaluated the influence of plant variety, mycorrhizal colonization, herbivory, and their interactions on the composition of emitted volatiles in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Four tomato varieties from two breeding histories (two heirlooms and two hybrids), were used. Tomato plants were inoculated with a commercial inoculum blend consisting of four species of AMF. Plants were also subjected to herbivory by Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae L.) five weeks after transplanting. Headspace volatiles were collected from inoculated and non-inoculated plants with and without herbivores using solid phase-microextraction. Volatile profiles consisted of 21 different volatiles in detectable quantities. These included monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and alkane hydrocarbons. We documented a strong plant variety effect on VOC emissions. AMF colonization and herbivory suppressed VOC emissions. Plant biomass was improved by colonization of AMF. Our results show that mycorrhization, herbivory and plant variety can alter tomato plant VOC emissions and further shape volatile-mediated insect and plant interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dual crises of COVID-19 and climate change are impacting the lives of adolescents and young people as they transition to adulthood in an uncertain world, yet they are often excluded from research and political discourse. We surveyed young people about their needs and experiences, critical to engaging them and designing effective programs and policies to address these intersecting harms. The 2022 round of a national online survey through the Violence Outcomes in COVID-19 Epoch (VoCes) Study surveyed 152,088 Mexican youth (15–24 years). Logistic regressions were implemented to identify characteristics associated with four climate responses (economic, work-related, receiving government support, or social network support). Overall, 8.1% of participants experienced a recent climate hazard, with major impacts including housing damage from floods, and crop/livestock losses from drought. Participants who experienced a climate hazard were more likely to have experienced a pandemic-related harm, suggesting a dual impact. Poor youth were more likely to report economic losses from both the pandemic and a climate event but least likely to receive government support. Economic effects from the pandemic are exacerbating climate-related harms, unequally threatening the poorest youth. Engaging young people in decision-making and supporting the most vulnerable youth is critical for the next generation to thrive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sheep wool waste has become a problem affecting the environment, as today the wool of most species has no commercial application and is considered a waste product. Sheep's wool is mainly composed of keratin which, due to its protein nature and multiple functional groups, has attracted great interest in applications such as support materials in tissue engineering, bioactive materials, and targeted drug delivery. Support materials can be fabricated by 3D printing by syringe extrusion. However, keratin is not suitable for this technique as it does not present proper rheological characteristics. Alginate, a biopolymer derived from brown seaweed, offers a wide range of viscosities at room temperature and offers good performance in 3D printing. Thus, keratin and alginate-based mixtures, due to their properties and ecoefficiency, are interesting candidates to prepare 3D-printed scaffolds. The aim of this work was to develop fully biobased printable inks containing keratin, alginate, salvia extracts, and cellulose nanofibers. In a first stage, keratose, an oxidized form of keratin, was obtained from sheep wool by a clean extraction methodology, and the miscibility and viscosity of keratose-alginate mixtures were assessed. In a second stage, biobased inks were prepared parting from miscible keratose-alginate mixtures. Flow analysis, spectromechanical analysis, and recovery tests were carried out to analyze the effect of the ink formulation over rheological parameters and printability. Intertidal seaweed beds form three-dimensional structures providing habitat for a variety of species. As such, ecosystem-based management of seaweed harvesting must take into consideration the impact of the harvest not only on the biomass but also on the morphology of the seaweed. We compare the morphology and vertical distribution of biomass and shoots in Ascophyllum nodosum from three sites with a 20 + year history of commercial harvesting with three corresponding control sites in southern New Brunswick, Canada. We found no significant impact of harvest history on the vertical distribution of shoots or biomass within individual clumps. At two of the three harvested sites, large clumps had a wider circumference than those at the control sites, suggesting that long-term harvesting increases the growth of shoots throughout the clumps; presumably caused by an increase in light penetration through the harvested canopy. We also compare biomass of littorinids, the most abundant invertebrates found in A. nodosum beds at low tide and found no significant difference between control and harvested sites. We conclude that the harvest of A. nodosum according to the current regulations in New Brunswick, does not have long-term impact on the morphology of the algae or on the abundance of its main inhabitant. Despite the amount of research on disease mapping in recent years, the use of multivariate models for areal spatial data remains limited due to difficulties in implementation and computational burden. These problems are exacerbated when the number of areas is very large. In this paper, we introduce an order-free multivariate scalable Bayesian modelling approach to smooth mortality (or incidence) risks of several diseases simultaneously. The proposal partitions the spatial domain into smaller subregions, fits multivariate models in each subdivision and obtains the posterior distribution of the relative risks across the entire spatial domain. The approach also provides posterior correlations among the spatial patterns of the diseases in each partition that are combined through a consensus Monte Carlo algorithm to obtain correlations for the whole study region. We implement the proposal using integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA) in the R package bigDM and use it to jointly analyse colorectal, lung, and stomach cancer mortality data in Spanish municipalities. The new proposal allows for the analysis of large datasets and yields superior results compared to fitting a single multivariate model. Additionally, it facilitates statistical inference through local homogeneous models, which may be more appropriate than a global homogeneous model when dealing with a large number of areas. Despite the considerable efficacy observed when targeting a dispensable lineage antigen, such as CD19 in B cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia1,2, the broader applicability of adoptive immunotherapies is hampered by the absence of tumour-restricted antigens3–5. Acute myeloid leukaemia immunotherapies target genes expressed by haematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) or differentiated myeloid cells, resulting in intolerable on-target/off-tumour toxicity. Here we show that epitope engineering of donor HSPCs used for bone marrow transplantation endows haematopoietic lineages with selective resistance to chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells or monoclonal antibodies, without affecting protein function or regulation. This strategy enables the targeting of genes that are essential for leukaemia survival regardless of shared expression on HSPCs, reducing the risk of tumour immune escape. By performing epitope mapping and library screenings, we identified amino acid changes that abrogate the binding of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies targeting FLT3, CD123 and KIT, and optimized a base-editing approach to introduce them into CD34+ HSPCs, which retain long-term engraftment and multilineage differentiation ability. After CAR T cell treatment, we confirmed resistance of epitope-edited haematopoiesis and concomitant eradication of patient-derived acute myeloid leukaemia xenografts. Furthermore, we show that multiplex epitope engineering of HSPCs is feasible and enables more effective immunotherapies against multiple targets without incurring overlapping off-tumour toxicities. The recently discovered wild yeast Wickerhamomyces sp. UFFS-CE-3.1.2 was analyzed through a high-throughput experimental design to improve ethanol yields in synthetic media with glucose, xylose, and cellobiose as carbon sources and acetic acid, furfural, formic acid, and NaCl as fermentation inhibitors. After Plackett–Burman (PB) and central composite design (CCD), the optimized condition was used in a fermentation kinetic analysis to compare this yeast's performance with an industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain (JDY-01) genetically engineered to achieve a higher xylose fermentation capacity and fermentation inhibitors tolerance by overexpressing the genes XYL1, XYL2, XKS1, and TAL1. Our results show that furfural and NaCl had no significant effect on sugar consumption by UFFS-CE-3.1.2. Surprisingly, acetic acid negatively affected glucose but not xylose and cellobiose consumption. In contrast, the pH positively affected all the analyzed responses, indicating a cell's preference for alkaline environments. In the CCD, sugar concentration negatively affected the yields of ethanol, xylitol, and cellular biomass. Therefore, fermentation kinetics were carried out with the average concentrations of sugars and fermentation inhibitors and the highest tested pH value (8.0). Although UFFS-CE-3.1.2 fermented glucose efficiently, xylose and cellobiose were mainly used for cellular growth. Interestingly, the genetically engineered strain JDY-01 consumed ~ 30% more xylose and produced ~ 20% more ethanol. Also, while UFFS-CE-3.1.2 only consumed 32% of the acetic acid of the medium, JDY-01 consumed > 60% of it, reducing its toxic effects. Thus, the overexpressed genes played an essential role in the inhibitors' tolerance, and the applied engineering strategy may help improve 2G ethanol production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mexican health system has been characterized by a mixture of progress and pitfalls, resulting in persistent inequalities. The main causes of death are related to socioeconomic factors reflecting the lack of opportunities regarding access to education, employment, income, and public health services. In this paper, we study the association between social inequality and mortality to assess how population composition by socioeconomic level shapes overall mortality. Socioeconomic information from vital statistics of mortality is used to estimate life expectancy (LE) and lifespan variability by age, sex, and socioeconomic status using three variables: educational attainment, occupation, and access to social security. We also use a decomposition method to separate the effect of changes in population composition by socioeconomic status from changes in mortality by education over changes in LE and lifespan variation. We find that increasing educational attainment and health coverage impact LE positively. The population without formal education and those without access to social security are the worst socioeconomic positions for mortality. The effects of changes in population composition by socioeconomic status is greater for men than for women. Given the amount of contribution from the population structure by socioeconomic status, the implementation of social policies focused on broadening access to tertiary education—which incentivize formal employment and seek to achieve universal health coverage—could boost an increase in the survivorship of Mexican population. Assessing patterns of functional connectivity among amphibian demes is crucial to unravel their population dynamics and prevent their isolation and eventual extinction. Integrative studies based on direct (capture-mark-recapture) and indirect (genetic) estimates of dispersal provide robust, biologically realistic inferences on population structure and connectivity, with applications for conservation efforts. We focused on two pond-breeding amphibians with contrasting life-history traits: the short-lived, semi-arboreal Hyla molleri and the long-lived, fossorial Pelobates cultripes. We PIT-tagged 2150 individuals of both species in two ponds (Laguna and Gravera, separated by 700 m) and monitored them from 2009 to 2021 to document the frequency and spatial extent of dispersal events. In addition, we genotyped individuals from these and two additional breeding populations at a maximum distance of 5 km with 15–16 microsatellites to characterize fine-scale patterns of genetic structure. We detected dispersal events connecting Laguna and Gravera in both species, albeit at low frequencies (4.8% and 7.7% of recaptured individuals of H. molleri and P. cultripes, respectively). However, both species were capable of covering long distances, with individual accumulated displacements up to 3.5 km (Hyla) and 1.8 km (Pelobates). Breeding populations > 2 km apart were genetically differentiated, indicating lower connectivity at this spatial scale. Estimates of pairwise migration rates differed between species and were asymmetrical, with different ponds representing "source" populations contributing more migrants to other populations in each species. We discuss the role of differences in life history traits and ecological preferences in shaping population dynamics in the two species and highlight management implications of our results. Introduction: Chemsex is a dynamic phenomenon with cultural variation. There is limited information about its prevalence and specific characteristics in our geographical area. Methods: In this cross-sectional study of a series of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) who engaged in chemsex and were attending the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, between March 2018 and May 2019, we aimed to identify potential vulnerabilities and describe the profiles of individuals who engaged in chemsex in our site. Baseline clinical and epidemiological characteristics related to HIV, HCV, STIs, sexual practices, and drug consumption were evaluated. A sub-analysis considering vulnerability conditions was completed. Results: We included 161 participants: 67% were migrants and 48% were Latin American. A total of 150 participants were people living with HIV (PLWH), and 13% had a detectable HIV viral load (VL). The prevalence of HCV infection was 37%. Slamming practice was reported by 20% of the participants. Migrants from Latin America were younger, had a lower percentage of university education, and more frequently had detectable HIV-VLs and syphilis. HCV-positive participants reported more injecting drug use, versatile fisting practices, and syphilis. Slam users consumed more methamphetamine and mephedrone, had significantly higher HIV-VLs when detectable, and reported less sober sex. Conclusion and Policy Implications: We identified certain baseline characteristics of our chemsex cohort that may confer a profile of greater vulnerability, which must be addressed in a personalized way when attempting damage reduction and a global approach to the practice of chemsex at our site. Access to specialized and interdisciplinary services with cultural competence in the complexity of the phenomenon should be guaranteed to these individuals for better management. Purpose: Pseudoaneurysms (PSA) can occur following high-grade solid organ injury. PSA natural history is unclear but risk for spontaneous rupture and exsanguination exist. The yield of delayed CT Angiography (dCTA) for PSA diagnosis is not well delineated and optimal timing is undefined. The study objective was definition of dCTA utility in diagnosing and triggering intervention for PSA after high-grade blunt solid organ injury. Methods: All blunt trauma patients arriving to our ACS-verified Level 1 trauma center with AAST grade ≥ III liver, spleen, and/or kidney injury were included in this retrospective observational study (01/2017–10/2021). Exclusions were age < 18 year, transfers in, death < 48 h, and immediate nephrectomy/splenectomy. dCTA performance was not protocolized and pursued at attending surgeon discretion. Demographics, clinical/injury data, and outcomes were collected. Primary outcome was dCTA-triggered intervention. Statistical testing with ANOVA/Chi squared compared outcomes by type of solid organ. Results: 349 blunt trauma patients with 395 high-grade solid organ injuries met study criteria. Median AAST grade of solid organ injury was 3 [3–4]. dCTA for PSA screening was pursued in 175 patients (44%), typically on hospital day 4 [3–7]. dCTA identified vascular lesions in 16 spleen, 10 liver, and 6 kidney injuries. dCTA triggered intervention in 24% of spleen, 13% of kidney, and 9% of liver injured patients who were screened, for an overall yield of 14%. Intervention was typically AE (n = 23, 92%), although two splenic PSA necessitated splenectomy. Conclusion: Delayed CTA for PSA screening after high-grade blunt solid organ injury was performed in half of eligible patients. dCTA identified numerous vascular lesions requiring endovascular or surgical intervention, with highest yield for splenic injuries. The concept of spatial confounding is closely connected to spatial regression, although no general definition has been established. A generally accepted idea of spatial confounding in spatial regression models is the change in fixed effects estimates that may occur when spatially correlated random effects collinear with the covariate are included in the model. Different methods have been proposed to alleviate spatial confounding in spatial linear regression models, but it is not clear if they provide correct fixed effects estimates. In this article, we consider some of those proposals to alleviate spatial confounding such as restricted regression, the spatial+ model, and transformed Gaussian Markov random fields. The objective is to determine which one provides the best estimates of the fixed effects. Dowry death data in Uttar Pradesh in 2001, stomach cancer incidence data in Slovenia in the period 1995–2001 and lip cancer incidence data in Scotland between the years 1975–1980 are analyzed. Several simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the methods in different scenarios of spatial confounding. Monitoring rare and elusive species is critical in guiding appropriate conservation management measures. Mammalian carnivores are challenging to monitor directly, due to their generally nocturnal and solitary lifestyle, and relatively large home ranges. The European mink Mustela lutreola is a critically endangered, small, semi-aquatic carnivore and is one of the most threatened mammal species in Europe. In northern Spain, the European mink population is monitored regionally using different methods and approaches, making assessment of national population status difficult. There is an urgent need to 1) assess the efficacy of survey methods and 2) identify a standard monitoring methodology that can be deployed rapidly and inexpensively over large areas of the mink's range. We deployed four methods—camera trapping, hair tubes, live trapping, and environmental DNA (eDNA) from water samples—to compare the probability of detecting European mink when present at 25 sampling sites within five 10 × 10 km2, and the economic cost and time required for each method. All four methods successfully detected European mink but the probability of detection varied by method. Camera trapping and hair tubes had the highest probability of detection; however, eDNA and live trapping detected mink in one 10 × 10 km2 where the latter two methods did not. For future European mink monitoring programs, we recommend a combination of at least two methods and suggest that camera traps or hair tubes are combined with live trapping or eDNA (depending on the scale and aims of the study), to gather critical information on distribution, occupancy and conservation status. Introduction: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective for HIV prevention, but the PrEP care continuum also involves improving PrEP awareness, uptake, adherence, and retention in care. Users' awareness is often compromised because of vulnerability factors and risk behaviors, such as chemsex practice or specific substance use, which could lead to risk compensation. Correct adherence and retention in care are essential to achieve the full effectiveness of PrEP. This study describes changes in users' risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as well also PrEP care continuum details. Methods: This was a descriptive single-center retrospective study including adults at high HIV risk screened between November 2019 and June 2021 in the PrEP program of our hospital. Demographic, behavioral, STI, adherence, and retention in care variables were assessed. Data were collected from medical records and self-report questionnaires. Results: A total of 295 people were included, 94% men and 5% transgender women, with a mean age of 34 years (SD 10) and 10% sex workers. At baseline, 55% disclosed chemsex practice and 3% slamming. During follow-up, condom use for anal intercourse decreased from 41% to 13% (p ≤ 0.0001) and one HIV infection was detected; other risk behaviors and STIs remained stable. Chemsex, group sex, fluid exchange, and condomless anal intercourse were related to STI risk. Adherence was correct in 80% of users, and retention in care was 57%. Discontinuations and loss to follow-up were high, mainly affecting transgender women, sex workers, and people practicing fisting. Conclusion: PrEP program implementation in our hospital was adequate, since it allowed, in a population at high HIV risk, overall users' risk behaviors and STIs to remain stable, with only one HIV diagnosis during the follow-up. Two species of the Emmelichthyidae family, Emmelichthys ruber and Erythrocles monodi, have been recorded in the western Atlantic. The species E. monodi is reported for the first time in Mexican waters, based on a specimen of 403 mm standard length, captured south of Veracruz, which corresponds to the first record of the family in Mexico and its southwestern distribution range of the Gulf of Mexico. Background: Incisional hernia (IH) is the main complication after laparotomy. In an attempt to reduce this complication, mesh techniques and studies in which the closure technique is modified have been proposed. Both types are characterized by comparison with the closure described as standard or conventional: 1 × 1, mass, and continuous closure. For this study, modified closure techniques (MCTs) were considered as those techniques in which an extra suture is placed (reinforced tension line (RTL), retention), the closure point is modified in distance (small bites) or shape (CLDC, Smead Jones, interrupted, Cardiff point) and which aim to reduce these complications. The objective of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to evaluate the effectiveness of MCTs for reducing the incidence of IH and abdominal wound dehiscence (AWD) to provide objective support for their recommendation. Methods: An NMA was performed according to the PRISMA-NMA guidelines. The primary objective was to determine the incidence of IH and AWD, and the secondary objective was to determine the incidence of postoperative complications. Only published clinical trials were included. The risk of bias was analyzed, and the random-effects model was used to determine statistical significance. Results: Twelve studies comparing 3540 patients were included. The incidence of HI was lower in RTL, retention suture, and small bites, these techniques showed statistical differences with pooled ORs (95% CI) of 0.28 (0.09–0.83), 0.28 (0.13–0.62), and 0.44 (0.31–0.62), respectively. Associated complications, including hematoma, seroma, and postoperative pain, could not be analyzed; however, MCTs did not increase the risk of surgical site infection. Conclusion: Small bites, RTL, and retention sutures decreased the prevalence of IH. RTL and retention suture decreased the prevalence of AWD. RTL was the best technique as it reduced both complications (IH and AWD) and had the best SUCRA and P-scores, and the number needed to treat (NNT) for net effect was 3. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy that are released when supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies violently disrupt a star that passes too close1. TDEs provide a window through which to study accretion onto supermassive black holes; in some rare cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet2–9, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. The best-studied jetted TDE so far is Swift J1644+57, which was discovered in γ-rays, but was too obscured by dust to be seen at optical wavelengths. Here we report the optical detection of AT2022cmc, a rapidly fading source at cosmological distance (redshift z = 1.19325) the unique light curve of which transitioned into a luminous plateau within days. Observations of a bright counterpart at other wavelengths, including X-ray, submillimetre and radio, supports the interpretation of AT2022cmc as a jetted TDE containing a synchrotron ‘afterglow’, probably launched by a supermassive black hole with spin greater than approximately 0.3. Using four years of Zwicky Transient Facility10 survey data, we calculate a rate of 0.0 2 − 0.01 + 0.04 per gigapascals cubed per year for on-axis jetted TDEs on the basis of the luminous, fast-fading red component, thus providing a measurement complementary to the rates derived from X-ray and radio observations11. Correcting for the beaming angle effects, this rate confirms that approximately 1 per cent of TDEs have relativistic jets. Optical surveys can use AT2022cmc as a prototype to unveil a population of jetted TDEs.A series of early-time, multiwavelength observations of an optical transient, AT2022cmc, indicate that it is a relativistic jet from a tidal disruption event originating from a supermassive black hole. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are divided into two populations1,2; long GRBs that derive from the core collapse of massive stars (for example, ref. 3) and short GRBs that form in the merger of two compact objects4,5. Although it is common to divide the two populations at a gamma-ray duration of 2 s, classification based on duration does not always map to the progenitor. Notably, GRBs with short (≲2 s) spikes of prompt gamma-ray emission followed by prolonged, spectrally softer extended emission (EE-SGRBs) have been suggested to arise from compact object mergers6–8. Compact object mergers are of great astrophysical importance as the only confirmed site of rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis, observed in the form of so-called kilonovae9–14. Here we report the discovery of a possible kilonova associated with the nearby (350 Mpc), minute-duration GRB 211211A. The kilonova implies that the progenitor is a compact object merger, suggesting that GRBs with long, complex light curves can be spawned from merger events. The kilonova of GRB 211211A has a similar luminosity, duration and colour to that which accompanied the gravitational wave (GW)-detected binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 (ref. 4). Further searches for GW signals coincident with long GRBs are a promising route for future multi-messenger astronomy.A possible kilonova associated with a nearby, long-duration gamma-ray burst suggests that gamma-ray bursts with long and complex light curves can be spawned from the merger of two compact objects, contrary to the established gamma-ray burst paradigm. In order to properly planning transportation systems and providing adequate services, it is essential to characterize the passenger demands, understand the behavior patterns and associate them to the routes considering space and time. Currently, promising alternatives based on the Internet of Things concepts allow adequately estimate the demand and provide very useful information. However, these devices are not widespread and usually, single GPS systems are more frequently available to monitor transportation systems worldwide. Conventional data analysis infrastructures commonly require great computational efforts to run the huge amount of data usually provided by GPS systems to get statistical and visual reports. In this quest for continuous improvement, new analysis or visualization infrastructures may require a highly repetitive processing algorithm applied in all data. This way of acting hinders the cognitive process, the capacity for analysis, and the inference of relevant information. In this context, this paper proposes an approach based on visual analytics for inferring passenger demand from GPS data. The proposed approach combines two stages. In the first stage, a space-time algorithm extracts indicators from the GPS data and makes them available. The second stage, an iterative visualization interface containing configurable filters and statistical functions, helps the user to explore intuitively the relationship between indicators and passenger demand. The case studies are based on actual data collected in the Living Lab for Electrical Mobility at University of Campinas. In the town of Calera y Chozas (Spain), five mass graves containing the remains of 28 individuals were discovered during a 2012 excavation. The witnesses and historical evidence indicated that the body of the last Republican mayor of the town, Felipe Fernández Varela, who had died in September 1939, was located in the mass grave designated as no. 1. Within this particular grave, only two bodies were found. Anthropological analysis showed that the first individual was significantly younger than 50 years, being the mayor's age at the time of death, while the age of the second individual was closer to 50. This second individual had a fractured skull, with a depression on the left parietal bone, and there were unmistakable signs of autopsy, which consisted of cut marks on the frontal bone and the sternal extremity of the right clavicle. Further historical research revealed documents concerning the autopsy performed on this individual. Although, according to the report, the cause of death was a stroke — the consequence of atherosclerosis and alcoholism — no reference was made to the forceful impact to the skull or intracranial bleeding. Considering the size of the fracture on the skull and the fact that there were no signs of bone healing, we believe that this impact, and not the stroke, was the direct cause of the death of the last Republican mayor. The mayor's case is a clear example of the role forensic medicine performed at the beginning of Franco's dictatorship. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis (Fucales, Fucaceae) is a modular intertidal brown alga that has the particularity of forming an air bladder once a year at the apical tip of the growing shoots. This characteristic provides a means for aging and estimating the growth of individuals. While it has long been recognized that growth can occur in older parts of the frond, this has not been properly assessed until now and has largely been overlooked when calculating the productivity of the species. Recent studies have suggested that the growth and elongation of older segments is minimal and thus has been used to infer past environmental conditions. Here we assessed the length and mass of successive internodal segments from 25 sites spread over both sides of the North Atlantic, covering a wide portion of the distribution of the species. By calculating the ratio of the mass and length of a segment divided by the segment produced the following year, we established that internodal segments continue accumulating mass for 1–5 years and increase in length for 1–3 years at most sites. Segments can almost triple their mass during their second year and more than double their length. These results indicate that previous productivity and growth estimates for A. nodosum based on apical growth alone greatly underestimate the true productivity of the species and its role in coastal carbon cycling. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a huge impact worldwide and has highlighted the extent of health inequalities between countries but also in small areas within a country. Identifying areas with high mortality is important both of public health mitigation in COVID-19 outbreaks, and of longer term efforts to tackle social inequalities in health. In this paper we consider different statistical models and an extension of a recent method to analyze COVID-19 related mortality in English small areas during the first wave of the epidemic in the first half of 2020. We seek to identify hotspots, and where they are most geographically concentrated, taking account of observed area factors as well as spatial correlation and clustering in regression residuals, while also allowing for spatial discontinuities. Results show an excess of COVID-19 mortality cases in small areas surrounding London and in other small areas in North-East and and North-West of England. Models alleviating spatial confounding show ethnic isolation, air quality and area morbidity covariates having a significant and broadly similar impact on COVID-19 mortality, whereas nursing home location seems to be slightly less important. A primary phase in geometric morphometric approaches is studying shape diversity and determining the extent to which morphological traits correlate with variables such as size. Organisms with hard exoskeletons, such as pterioid bivalves, offer excellent models to perform these studies as they show variation in shell shape which is influenced by size. In this study, the shells of individuals of wild pearl oysters Pinctada mazatlanica were evaluated looking for patterns of allometric shape variation and modularity using 2D landmark coordinates. Samples were collected from 2013 to 2015 around 15º N and 96º W, in Oaxaca state, Mexico. More than 13% of morphological shell variation was explained by size. The relationship between size descriptors was strong and revealed shape changes during growth. Shells develop the anterior auricle and accentuate the byssal gape, the posteroventral growth is accelerated while the anteroventral diminishes. The modularity hypotheses considering the hinge, the two auricles and the anteroventral and posteroventral regions as separated units showed the highest signal. Overall, highest levels of correlation were observed between the hinge and the ventral portion of the shell, which were significantly explained by the size increment. Concerning variation attributable to non-biological causes no differences in shape were observed between photographed and scanned shells. On the contrary, significant differences were found between two different methods used to digitize semilandmarks. The geometric morphometrics methods employed detected that for small individuals, width can be a more reliable estimator of growth, which was not observed in previous works using distance variables. Current climate changes imply an imminent risk for forest species. In this context, somatic embryogenesis is a valuable tool to study the response of plants to different abiotic stresses. Based on this, we applied a high-temperature regime (50 °C, 5 min) during the maturation of Pinus radiata D. Don embryogenic masses in order to evaluate the development of an epigenetic memory months later. Therefore, somatic plants (SP) resulting from somatic embryos (ses) maturated at control temperature and cultivated in a greenhouse were submitted to heat stress (40 °C, 2 h, 10 days; 23 °C, 10 days) or at a control temperature (23 °C, 20 days); while another 20 SP resulting from ses maturated in the two temperature regimes and cultivated in the greenhouse were submitted to drought stress or weekly irrigated. All plants were evaluated for relative water content, water potential, electrolyte leakage, stomatal conductance, transpiration, methylation (5-mC) and hydroxymethylation (5-hmC) levels. The results showed that the SP obtained from ses maturated at 50 °C showed an adaptation to drought stress based on water potential and transpiration. Furthermore, SP kept under heat stress in a greenhouse showed lower 5-hmC levels than SP kept at 23 °C. Furthermore, the 5-hmC and 5-hmC/5-mC ratio showed a significantly negative correlation with changes in water potential; and a significantly negative correlation was observed between the levels of stomatal conductance and 5-mC. We conclude that the manipulation of conditions during the maturation process in somatic embryogenesis modulates the physiological characteristics of the SP obtained. The Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on board the Hinode spacecraft has been operating since 2006, returning high-resolution data in the 170 – 212 and 246 – 292 Å wavelength regions. EIS has four slit options, with the narrow 1′′ and 2′′ slits used for spectroscopy and the wide 40′′ and 266′′ slits used for monochromatic imaging. In this article several properties of the 40′′ slit (or slot) are measured using the Fe xii 195.12 Å line, which is formed at 1.5 MK. The projected width of the slot on the detector shows a small variation along the slit with an average value of 40.949′′. The slot image is tilted on the detector and a quadratic formula is provided to describe the tilt. The tilt corresponds to four pixels on the detector and the slot centroid is offset mostly to the right (longer wavelengths) of the 1′′ slit by up to four pixels. Measurement of the intensity decrease at the edge of the slot leads to an estimate of the spatial resolution of the images in the x -direction. The resolution varies quadratically along the slot, with a minimum value of 2.9′′ close to the detector center. Intensities measured from the slot images are found to be on average 14% higher than those measured from the 1′′ slit at the same spatial location. Circadian clocks exhibit ‘temperature compensation’, meaning that they show only small changes in period over a broad temperature range. Several clock genes have been implicated in the temperature‐dependent control of period in Arabidopsis. We show that blue light is essential for this, suggesting that the effects of light and temperature interact or converge upon common targets in the circadian clock. Our data demonstrate that two cryptochrome photoreceptors differentially control circadian period and sustain rhythmicity across the physiological temperature range. In order to test the hypothesis that the targets of light regulation are sufficient to mediate temperature compensation, we constructed a temperature‐compensated clock model by adding passive temperature effects into only the light‐sensitive processes in the model. Remarkably, this model was not only capable of full temperature compensation and consistent with mRNA profiles across a temperature range, but also predicted the temperature‐dependent change in the level of LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL, a key clock protein. Our analysis provides a systems‐level understanding of period control in the plant circadian oscillator.

The conduct of respiratory droplets is the basis of the study to reduce the spread of a virus in society. The pandemic suffered in early 2020 due to COVID-19 shows the lack of research on the evaporation and fate of droplets exhaled in the environment. The current study, attempts to provide solution through computational fluid dynamics techniques based on a multiphase state with the help of Eulerian–Lagrangian techniques to the activity of respiratory droplets. A numerical study has shown how the behavior of droplets of pure water exhaled in the environment after a sneeze or cough have a dynamic equal to the experimental curve of Wells. The droplets of saliva have been introduced as a saline solution. Considering the mass transferred and the turbulence created, the results has showed that the ambient temperature and relative humidity are parameters that significantly affect the evaporation process, and therefore to the fate. Evaporation time tends to be of a higher value when the temperature affecting the environment is lower. With constant parameters of particle diameter and ambient temperature, an increase in relative humidity increases the evaporation time. A larger particle diameter is consequently transported at a greater distance, since the opposite force it affects is the weight. Little is known about the epidemiology of systemic vasculitis in South American countries. The aim of this study is to compare the prevalence of systemic vasculitides in two vasculitis referral centers from Brazil and Peru. A cross-sectional study was performed and all patients above 18 years of age, with at least 6 months of follow-up and who met classification or diagnosis criteria for the most common forms of vasculitis, were included. A total of 562 patients with systemic vasculitis were analyzed, 345 (61.4%) from Brazil and 217 (38.6%) from Peru. The frequency of Behçet's disease (37.9% vs. 1.8%; p < 0.0001), Takayasu arteritis (TAK) (25.2% vs. 6.9%; p < 0.0001), and giant cell arteritis (9.8% vs. 0.9%; p < 0.0001) was higher in the Brazilian center than the Peruvian one. On the other hand, the frequency of microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) (67.3% vs. 2.8%; p < 0.0001) and renal-limited vasculitis (2.8% vs. 0.0%; p = 0.009) was higher in the Peruvian center. No differences were found concerning other forms of vasculitis. At diagnosis, Brazilian patients with TAK, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and MPA were younger than Peruvian patients. Epidemiologic differences in the frequency of systemic vasculitis are observed between a vasculitis referral center from Brazil and another from Peru. We extend the notion of small essential deformations of Calabi–Yau complex structures from the case of the Iwasawa manifold, for which they were introduced recently by the first-named author, to the general case of page-1- ∂ ∂ ¯ -manifolds that were jointly introduced very recently by all three authors. We go on to obtain an analogue of the unobstructedness theorem of Bogomolov, Tian and Todorov for Calabi–Yau page-1- ∂ ∂ ¯ -manifolds. As applications of this discussion, we study the small deformations of certain Nakamura solvmanifolds and reinterpret the cases of the Iwasawa manifold and its 5-dimensional analogue from this standpoint. Food production in areas contaminated by industrial wastes poses a serious risk to farmers and consumers. Here, we evaluate Cd, Cr, Ni, and Pb concentrations in the soils and the edible parts of lettuce, chives, tomatoes, pepper, and cassava plants grown by small farmers in areas contaminated by slag from an abandoned steel plant in Havana, Cuba. The total, environmentally available, and bioavailable concentrations of metals in the soils and the metals bioconcentration factor in the plants were determined. The risks to human health from food and soil ingestion were estimated. The total and environmentally available concentrations of Cd, Cr, and Pb were above values considered safe by international standards, with likely adverse effect on human health. Cadmium was the most bioavailable metal, reflected in the highest accumulation in the crops' edible parts. Even with negligible DTPA-available Cr concentrations in soils, the Cr concentrations in edible parts of the crops exceeded regulatory levels, suggesting that rhizosphere mechanisms may increase Cr availability. The consumption of vegetables represented 70% of the daily intake dose for Cr, Cd, and Ni, while accidental ingestion of contaminated soil is the predominant human exposure route for Pb. Our results demonstrated the health risks associated with cultivating and consuming vegetables grown on metal contaminated soils in Havana and can assist public policies capable of guaranteeing the sustainability of urban agriculture and food security.
