Temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and the resistivity in Tl[sub 2]Ba[sub 2]CaCu[sub 2]O[sub y] (Tl-2212), Tl[sub 2]Ba[sub 2]Ca[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub y] (Tl-2223) and Cu[sub 0.7]C[sub 0.3]Ba[sub 2]Ca[sub 3]Cu[sub 4]O[sub y](Cu-1234) have been measured under high pressure up to 6 GPa. The values of the intrinsic T[sub c] enhancement not related to charge transfer by applied pressure were estimated to be ∼0.8K/GPa for the Tl system and ∼1.1K/GPa for Cu-1234. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variation of T[sub c] in the over doped region have been investigated for Zn and Ni doped samples of TlBa[sub 2] Ca[sub 2] Cu[sub 3] O[sub 9-δ] to obtain a clue to understand the anomalous suppression of T[sub c]. We expected that if the anomaly in Tl-1223 originates from the stripe order like La-214 system, the suppression of T[sub c] is enhanced by the doping. The results showed that the anomaly disappeared by both of the doping contrary to the expectation so that the possibility of the stripe order was ruled out. Two possible explanations were proposed based on a self-doping mechanism and inhomogeneous charge distribution to crystallography different CuO[sub 2] layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have synthesized an almost single phase sample of HgBa[sub 2] Ca[sub 4] Cu[sub 5] O[sub y] with T[sub c] of 108K using a high pressure and high temperature technique. The carreier concentration, N[sub H], was deduced from the Hall coefficient R[sub H] using a simple relation (N[sub H]=1/(eR[sub H])) at 300 K and the Hall number per CuO[sub 2] plane was estimated to be 0.12 for this sample. We also observed a T² dependence of the Hall angle (cotθ[sub H]). The critical current density(J[sub c]) and irreversible field (B[sub irr]) have been estimated firm measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops assuming Bean's critical state model. The B[sub irr] for this sample as a function of temperature was lower than HgBa[sub 2] Ca[sub 2] Cu[sub 3] O[sub y] (Hg-1223). This result suggests that the anisotropy in Hg-1245 is seem to be larger than that in Hg-1223 and inter-layer coupling among five CuO[sub 2] planes in Hg-1245 becomes weaker than that in Hg-1223 by adding two CuO[sub 2] planes. Single phase samples with the composition of (Cu, M)Ba2 Ca3 Cu4 Oy (CuM-1234; M=C,Al,Tl,Mg,Zn) have been synthesized using high pressure technique. We have measured the pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc ) through insitu resistivity measurements up to 8 GPa for these samples, reproducibly. These samples indicated almost the same Tc -enhancement by applied pressure, in spite of their different ambient Tc values. The enhancement values of 8-10 K at 8 GPa pressure for these samples are found to be comparable to those of Hg-system and (B,C)-system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have synthesized the single phase samples of Cux C0.1 Ba2 Ca3 Cu4 Oz (x=0.2∼0.9). Transport and magnetic measurements and iodometric titration analysis were carried out for these materials. From these results we discuss the correlation between Tc , the Hall number, copper valence and oxygen content. The effect of the substituted M ions on Tc in (CuC, M)-l234 (M=Ni,Zn,Al,TI,Mg) is also discussed. We propose a unique selective carrier-doping mechanism in (Cu,C)- and (CuC,Mg)-1234 systems. The carrier distribution among the inequivalent CuO2 planes in multilayer cuprates is investigated by63 Cu Knight shift measurement with varying the carrier concentration, δ and the number of CuO2 plane in a unit cell, n. We found that 70 (60)% of total carriers are doped selectively into two outer CuO2 planes in n = 3 (4) . This indicates resultantly that the inhomogeneity of carrier distribution increases with increasing δ and n in multilayer cuprates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented with obstructive jaundice by pancreatic hemangioma. In this case, a minimal operation for obstructive jaundice without resection of the tumor was performed. Three years after the operation, the pancreatic hemangioma almost disappeared. We describe an infant with intrahepatic portosystemic venous shunt (IPSVS), which was detected by MR angiography. IPSVS is rare and its cause is disputed. However, with improvements in imaging the number of reports of IPSVS identified incidentally in patients without definite symptoms is increasing. Pneumatosis intestinalis was present in a premature infant with extensive aganglionosis. The diagnosis could not be made prior to exploratory laparotomy since pneumatosis intestinalis is not specific for extensive aganglionosis. Pneumatosis intestinalis in infants is associated with underlying necrotizing enterocolitis as well as with extensive aganglionosis. The combination with extensive aganglionosis also suggests the possibility of superimposed inflammation, which is a serious complication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report an 8-month-old male presenting with gingival hemorrhages and nasal bleeding as the first symptom of a choledochal cyst (CC). On physical examination, there was a large cystic mass in the right upper abdominal quadrant. Laboratory studies on admission revealed moderate liver dysfunction and a bleeding tendency due to vitamin K deficiency. After administration of 5 mg vitamin K the bleeding tendency disappeared. At laparotomy, a large CC 5 cm in diameter was found and the liver showed moderate cholestasis. The sudden onset of a bleeding tendency in infants with congenital liver or biliary-tract disease may suggest not only biliary atresia, but also CC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intussusception is a relatively common pediatric gastrointestinal emergency, although the etiology in most cases remains unknown. In a small number of cases the lead point is a tumor or tumor-like lesion of the small bowel. We report an unusual case of a myoepithelial hamartoma of the ileum causing an intussusception in a 4-month-old boy. This is the second such report in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
