Multiple neurocognitive processes are involved in the highly complex task of producing written words. Yet, little is known about the neural pathways that support spelling in healthy adults. We assessed the associations between performance on a difficult spelling-to-dictation task and microstructural properties of language-related white matter pathways, in a sample of 73 native English-speaking neurotypical adults. Participants completed a diffusion magnetic resonance imaging scan and a cognitive assessment battery. Using constrained spherical deconvolution modeling and probabilistic tractography, we reconstructed dorsal and ventral white matter tracts of interest, bilaterally, in individual participants. Spelling associations were found in both dorsal and ventral stream pathways. In high-performing spellers, spelling scores significantly correlated with fractional anisotropy (FA) within the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, a ventral stream pathway. In low-performing spellers, spelling scores significantly correlated with FA within the third branch of the right superior longitudinal fasciculus, a dorsal pathway. An automated analysis of spelling errors revealed that high- and low- performing spellers also differed in their error patterns, diverging primarily in terms of the orthographic distance between their errors and the correct spelling, compared to the phonological plausibility of their spelling responses. The results demonstrate the complexity of the neurocognitive architecture of spelling. The distinct white matter associations and error patterns detected in low- and high- performing spellers suggest that they rely on different cognitive processes, such that high-performing spellers rely more on lexical-orthographic representations, while low-performing spellers rely more on phoneme-to-grapheme conversion. Purpose: A blood pressure stabilization during late phase II of Valsalva's maneuver may be utilized to confirm sympathetic vasoconstrictor control after a spinal cord injury. This study investigated whether Valsalva response was predictive of hemodynamics during tilt or isometric handgrip. Methods: Presence/absence of Valsalva response was compared to heart rate, mean arterial pressure, leg blood flow, and vascular resistance during head-up tilt and isometric handgrip to fatigue in 14 adults with spinal cord injury from C7 to T12 and 14 controls. Statistics were performed with two-way repeated measure analysis of variance (ANOVA), post hoc t-tests for between-group comparisons, and Mann–Whitney U tests for within-group. Results: In total, six participants with spinal cord injury lacked a blood pressure stabilization for Valsalva's maneuver. However, this was not related to vasoconstrictor responses during the other tests. The groups had similar heart rate and blood pressure changes during tilt, though leg blood flow decreases and vascular resistance increases tended to be smaller at 20° tilt in those with spinal cord injury (p = 0.07 and p = 0.11, respectively). Participants with spinal cord injury had lower heart rates and markedly smaller blood pressure increases during handgrip (both p < 0.05). There were no group differences in leg blood flow, but those with spinal cord injury demonstrated a blunted vascular resistance increase by the final 10% of the handgrip (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Valsalva response was not consistent with hemodynamics during other stimuli, but some individuals evidence increases in sub-lesional vascular resistance to isometric handgrip comparable to controls, suggesting a sympathoexcitatory stimulus may be critical to provoke hemodynamic responses after spinal cord injury. Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder, and while ventral intermediate nucleus deep brain stimulation (VIM-DBS) is a well-established treatment, its precise mechanisms or modulatory effects, particularly in relation to cerebellar oscillations, remain unclear. In this study, we hypothesized that VIM-DBS would modulate cerebellar oscillatory activity across both resting and motor task conditions, reflecting its impact on cerebello-thalamic pathways. Ten patients diagnosed with ET participated in this study. We examined the effects of VIM-DBS on mid-cerebellar oscillations during resting-state and lower-limb pedaling motor tasks. Frequency analysis was conducted on the resting-state signal and time-frequency analysis was performed on motor task-related signals. We explored the modulatory effects of VIM-DBS on oscillatory activity across delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. We found that ON VIM-DBS increased mid-cerebellar relative theta power during resting-state conditions, with no significant changes in other frequency bands. During a pedaling motor task, VIM-DBS led to significant reductions in theta, alpha, and gamma power, highlighting the frequency-specific effects of stimulation. VIM-DBS also increased peak acceleration of leg movements during the pedaling task. Furthermore, VIM-DBS selectively increased mid-frontal relative theta and beta power as well as mid-occipital relative theta power during resting condition, suggesting localized mid-cerebellar modulation. Moreover, similarity analyses between mid-cerebellar and nearby mid-occipital signals revealed differences in coherence, phase coherence, and cross-spectrum phase coherence. Amblyomma maculatum sensu lato (s.l.) is an ixodid tick found in the semi-arid southwestern United States and northern Mexico where it is a parasite of medical and veterinary significance, including as a vector for Rickettsia parkeri, a cause of spotted fever rickettsiosis in the Americas. To describe the comprehensive natural history of this tick, monthly small mammal trapping and avian mist netting sessions were conducted at sites in Cochise County Arizona, within the Madrean Archipelago region where human cases of R. parkeri rickettsiosis and adult stages of A. maculatum s.l. were previously documented. A total of 1949 larvae and nymphs were removed from nine taxonomic groups of rodents and ten species of birds and were used in combination with records for adult stages collected both from vegetation and hunter-harvested animals to model seasonal activity patterns. A univoltine phenology was observed, initiated by the onset of the annual North American monsoon and ceasing during the hot, dry conditions preceding the following monsoon season. Cotton rats (Sigmodon spp.) were significantly more likely to be infested than other rodent taxa and carried the highest tick loads, reflecting a mutual affinity of host and ectoparasite for microhabitats dominated by grass. An unusual pattern among the scaling laws in nature is that the fastest animals are neither the largest, nor the smallest, but rather intermediately sized. Because of the enormous diversity in animal shape, the mechanisms underlying this have long been difficult to determine. To address this, we challenge predictive human musculoskeletal simulations, scaled in mass from the size of a mouse (0.1 kg) to the size of an elephant (2000 kg), to move as fast as possible. Our models replicate patterns observed across extant animals including: (i) an intermediate optimal body mass for speed; (ii) a reduction in the cost of transport with increasing size; and (iii) crouched postures at smaller body masses and upright postures at larger body masses. Finally, we use our models to determine the mechanical limitations of speed with size, showing larger animals may be limited by their ability to produce muscular force while smaller animals are likely limited by their ability to produce larger ground reaction forces. Despite their bipedal gait, our models replicate patterns observed across quadrupedal animals, suggesting these biological phenomena likely represent general rules and are not the result of phylogenetic or other ecological factors that typically hinder comparative studies. Purpose: This work's purpose was to quantify rapid sympathetic activation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), and to identify associated correlations with symptoms of orthostatic hypotension and common autonomically mediated secondary medical complications. Methods: This work was a cross-sectional study of individuals with SCI and uninjured individuals. Symptoms of orthostatic hypotension were recorded using the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS)-31 and Autonomic Dysfunction following SCI (ADFSCI) survey. Histories of secondary complications of SCI were gathered. Rapid sympathetic activation was assessed using pressure recovery time of Valsalva maneuver. Stepwise multiple linear regression models identified contributions to secondary medical complication burden. Results: In total, 48 individuals (24 with SCI, 24 uninjured) underwent testing, with symptoms of orthostatic hypotension higher in those with SCI (COMPASS-31, 3.3 versus 0.6, p < 0.01; ADFSCI, 21.2 versus. 3.2, p < 0.01). Pressure recovery time was prolonged after SCI (7.0 s versus. 1.7 s, p < 0.01), though poorly correlated with orthostatic symptom severity. Neurological level of injury after SCI influenced pressure recovery time, with higher injury levels associated with more prolonged time. Stepwise multiple linear regression models identified pressure recovery time as the primary explanation for variance in number of urinary tract infections (34%), histories of hospitalizations (12%), and cumulative secondary medical complication burden (24%). In all conditions except time for bowel program, pressure recovery time outperformed current clinical tools for assessing such risk. Conclusions: SCI is associated with impaired rapid sympathetic activation, demonstrated here by prolonged pressure recovery time. Prolonged pressure recovery time after SCI predicts higher risk for autonomically mediated secondary complications, serving as a viable index for more "autonomically complete" injury. Purpose: To assess preferences and outcome expectations for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and corpus callosotomy (CC) surgeries in the treatment of atonic seizure in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Methods: A total of 260 surveys were collected from patients are caregivers of LGS patients via Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). Results: Respondents reported an average acceptable atonic seizure reduction rate of 55.9% following VNS and 74.7% following CC. 21.3% (n = 50) were willing to be randomized. Respondents reported low willingness for randomization and a higher seizure reduction expectation with CC. Conclusion: Our findings guide surgical approaches for clinicians to consider patient preference in order to design future studies comparing effectiveness between these two procedures. Objectives: To analyze our patient's complication profile and rate after removal of hardware (ROH) surgery, and survey our patients to ask their overall status and improvement in symptomatology post-operatively. Design: Retrospective chart review and survey. Setting: Academic, tertiary referral center. Patients/participants: 173 patients with 314 pieces of hardware. Seventy-six patients (43.9%) responded to our survey. Intervention: ROH surgery. Main outcome measurements: Patient demographics and complications were recorded. All patients were sent a brief 3-question survey which asked: (1) Why did you get your hardware removed? (2) How did your overall status change after ROH? (3) How did the ROH affect your stiffness, pain, swelling, and mobility? Results: There were 10 complications (5.5%): 5 infections, 2 with unresolved pain, 1 hematoma, 1 chronic regional pain syndrome exacerbation, and 1 recurrent deformity. All infections were treated with oral antibiotics and improved. All other complications resolved with treatment except for the patient who developed recurrent deformity. Patients underwent ROH surgery because their doctor suggested it (76.3%) and to improve mobility (39.5%). 86.9% reported their overall status improved after ROH. They improved regarding stiffness (73.7%), pain (73.6%), swelling (61.8%), and mobility (76.3%). Similar results were seen among different implants removed. Conclusions: The majority of patients who underwent percutaneous ROH were satisfied. They reported improvement in stiffness, pain, swelling and mobility (greatest improvement). The complication rate was low (5.5%). ROH can be a meaningful operation to patients allowing them to improve their quality of life with a low complication rate. Level of Evidence: Level IV. Interactions between exoplanetary atmospheres and internal properties have long been proposed to be drivers of the inflation mechanisms of gaseous planets and apparent atmospheric chemical disequilibrium conditions1. However, transmission spectra of exoplanets have been limited in their ability to observationally confirm these theories owing to the limited wavelength coverage of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and inferences of single molecules, mostly H2O (ref. 2). In this work, we present the panchromatic transmission spectrum of the approximately 750 K, low-density, Neptune-sized exoplanet WASP-107b using a combination of HST Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) and JWST Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). From this spectrum, we detect spectroscopic features resulting from H2O (21σ), CH4 (5σ), CO (7σ), CO2 (29σ), SO2 (9σ) and NH3 (6σ). The presence of these molecules enables constraints on the atmospheric metal enrichment (M/H is 10–18× solar3), vertical mixing strength (log10Kzz = 8.4–9.0 cm2 s−1) and internal temperature (>345 K). The high internal temperature is suggestive of tidally driven inflation4 acting on a Neptune-like internal structure, which can naturally explain the large radius and low density of the planet. These findings suggest that eccentricity-driven tidal heating is a critical process governing atmospheric chemistry and interior-structure inferences for most of the cool (<1,000 K) super-Earth-to-Saturn-mass exoplanet population.Analysis of the panchromatic transmission spectrum of the warm, low-density, Neptune-sized exoplanet WASP-107b from instruments aboard the HST and JWST suggests that tidal interaction with its host star led to changes in its atmospheric chemistry. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory tract infection, with the greatest impact on infants, immunocompromised individuals, and older adults. RSV prevalence decreased substantially in the United States (US) following the implementation of COVID-19-related non-pharmaceutical interventions but later rebounded with abnormal seasonality. The biological and epidemiological factors underlying this altered behavior remain poorly defined. In this retrospective cohort study from 2009 to 2023 in Chicago, Illinois, US, we examined RSV epidemiology, clinical severity, and genetic diversity. We found that changes in RSV diagnostic platforms drove increased detections in outpatient settings post-2020 and that hospitalized adults infected with RSV-A were at higher risk of intensive care admission than those with RSV-B. While population structures of RSV-A remained unchanged, RSV-B exhibited a genetic shift into geographically distinct clusters. Mutations in the antigenic regions of the fusion protein suggest convergent evolution with potential implications for vaccine and therapeutic development. Non-pharmaceutical interventions for COVID-19 also impacted the transmission of other viruses including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Animal performance fundamentally influences behaviour, ecology, and evolution. It typically varies monotonously with size. A notable exception is maximum running speed; the fastest animals are of intermediate size. Here we show that this peculiar allometry results from the competition between two musculoskeletal constraints: the kinetic energy capacity, which dominates in small animals, and the work capacity, which reigns supreme in large animals. The ratio of both capacities defines the physiological similarity index Γ, a dimensionless number akin to the Reynolds number in fluid mechanics. The scaling of Γ indicates a transition from a dominance of muscle forces to a dominance of inertial forces as animals grow in size; its magnitude defines conditions of “dynamic similarity“ that enable comparison and estimates of locomotor performance across extant and extinct animals; and the physical parameters that define it highlight opportunities for adaptations in musculoskeletal “design” that depart from the eternal null hypothesis of geometric similarity. The physiological similarity index challenges the Froude number as prevailing dynamic similarity condition, reveals that the differential growth of muscle and weight forces central to classic scaling theory is of secondary importance for the majority of terrestrial animals, and suggests avenues for comparative analyses of locomotor systems.How fast can animals run? Assessing habitat quality is a major goal of conservationists and restoration practitioners, but to associate habitat quality with biomarkers of vagile animals, the biomarkers must respond rapidly. Here, we identified a biomarker capable of rapidly detecting food limitation in the imperiled Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), a pelagic fish endemic to the San Francisco Estuary (SFE). We conducted an experiment with fed and unfed treatments of hatchery-raised, sub-adult Delta Smelt that were sampled at 12 time points: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 14, and 21 days. We then compared four biomarkers using Day 21 fish: RNA/DNA in liver, triglycerides in liver, glycogen in liver, and glycogen in muscle. Of the liver endpoints, glycogen had the largest difference between treatments at Day 21, so we compared it to muscle glycogen across all time points. Liver glycogen declined by 60% after 1 day of fasting and remained depressed in the fasting treatment across all subsequent time points. Muscle glycogen also responded rapidly, taking only 2 days to decline by 39% in the fasting treatment, but the difference was inconsistent across subsequent time points. When applied to hatchery-released Delta Smelt collected from the SFE, liver glycogen concentrations were less than half that of the fed hatchery fish, consistent with the hypothesis of food limitation in the wild, but also several other potential causes. The temporal lobe of the human brain contains the entorhinal cortex (EC). This region of the brain is a highly interconnected integrative hub for sensory and spatial information; it also has a key role in episodic memory formation and is the main source of cortical hippocampal inputs1–4. The human EC continues to develop during childhood5, but neurogenesis and neuronal migration to the EC are widely considered to be complete by birth. Here we show that the human temporal lobe contains many young neurons migrating into the postnatal EC and adjacent regions, with a large tangential stream persisting until the age of around one year and radial dispersal continuing until around two to three years of age. By contrast, we found no equivalent postnatal migration in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Immunostaining and single-nucleus RNA sequencing of ganglionic eminence germinal zones, the EC stream and the postnatal EC revealed that most migrating cells in the EC stream are derived from the caudal ganglionic eminence and become LAMP5+RELN+ inhibitory interneurons. These late-arriving interneurons could continue to shape the processing of sensory and spatial information well into postnatal life, when children are actively interacting with their environment. The EC is one of the first regions of the brain to be affected in Alzheimer's disease, and previous work has linked cognitive decline to the loss of LAMP5+RELN+ cells6,7. Our investigation reveals that many of these cells arrive in the EC through a major postnatal migratory stream in early childhood. A stream of young neurons migrating into the entorhinal cortex (EC) continues postnatally in humans, but not in macaques; these young neurons, which belong to a unique class of local circuit cells, continue to be recruited in the EC during infancy and early childhood. The medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) is hypothesized to function as a cognitive map for memory-guided navigation. How this map develops during learning and influences memory remains unclear. By imaging MEC calcium dynamics while mice successfully learned a novel virtual environment over ten days, we discovered that the dynamics gradually became more spatially consistent and then stabilized. Additionally, grid cells in the MEC not only exhibited improved spatial tuning consistency, but also maintained stable phase relationships, suggesting a network mechanism involving synaptic plasticity and rigid recurrent connectivity to shape grid cell activity during learning. Increased c-Fos expression in the MEC in novel environments further supports the induction of synaptic plasticity. Unsuccessful learning lacked these activity features, indicating that a consistent map is specific for effective spatial memory. Finally, optogenetically disrupting spatial consistency of the map impaired memory-guided navigation in a well-learned environment. Thus, we demonstrate that the establishment of a spatially consistent MEC map across learning both correlates with, and is necessary for, successful spatial memory. Atomically precise hydrogen desorption lithography using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) has enabled the development of single-atom, quantum-electronic devices on a laboratory scale. Scaling up this technology to mass-produce these devices requires bridging the gap between the precision of STM and the processes used in next-generation semiconductor manufacturing. Here, we demonstrate the ability to remove hydrogen from a monohydride Si(001):H surface using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. We quantify the desorption characteristics using various techniques, including STM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM). Our results show that desorption is induced by secondary electrons from valence band excitations, consistent with an exactly solvable non-linear differential equation and compatible with the current 13.5 nm (~92 eV) EUV standard for photolithography; the data imply useful exposure times of order minutes for the 300 W sources characteristic of EUV infrastructure. This is an important step towards the EUV patterning of silicon surfaces without traditional resists, by offering the possibility for parallel processing in the fabrication of classical and quantum devices through deterministic doping. Scanning tunnelling microscopy-based H desorption lithography is used for atomic-scale patterning of quantum devices in Si, but its time-consuming nature hinders scalability. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are now known as parts of a disease spectrum with common pathological features and genetic causes. However, as both conditions are clinically heterogeneous, patient groups may be phenotypically similar but pathogenically and genetically variable. Despite numerous clinical trials, there remains no effective therapy for these conditions, which, in part, may be due to challenges of therapy development in a heterogeneous patient population. Disruption to protein homeostasis is a key feature of different forms of ALS and FTD. Targeting the endogenous protein chaperone system, the heat shock response (HSR) may, therefore, be a potential therapeutic approach. We conducted a preclinical study of a known pharmacological amplifier of the HSR, called arimoclomol, in mice with a mutation in valosin-containing protein (VCP) which causes both ALS and FTD in patients. We demonstrate that amplification of the HSR ameliorates the ALS/FTD-like phenotype in the spinal cord and brain of mutant VCP mice and prevents neuronal loss, replicating our earlier findings in the SOD1 mouse model of ALS. Moreover, in human cell models, we demonstrate improvements in pathology upon arimoclomol treatment in mutant VCP patient fibroblasts and iPSC-derived motor neurons. Introduction: Percutaneous cryoablation is a first-line therapeutic option for primary neoplasms and metastatic lesions of the musculoskeletal system. Treatment of abdominal wall tumors is challenging as surgical resection can be highly morbid and necessitate complex reconstructive surgery; the efficacy of cryoablation for abdominal wall tumors may be limited by inadequate posterior margins owing to the proximity of intra-abdominal organs. With laparoscopy and insufflation, peritoneal structures can be safely mobilized away from the abdominal wall, allowing for adequate deep margin freeze and visualization of the ice ball. We present two patients with abdominal wall soft tissue tumors treated with a novel approach of laparoscopic-assisted, percutaneous ultrasound-guided cryoablation. Patients and Methods: Patient 1 is a 65-year-old female with metastatic extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, stable on systemic therapy, who presented with a new soft tissue metastasis to the abdominal wall. Resection would have necessitated a highly morbid complex abdominal wall reconstruction with mesh. Patient 2 is a 35-year-old female with a large abdominal wall desmoid tumor, diagnosed after miscarriage. Resection was relatively contraindicated owing to the morbidity of a complex abdominal wall reconstruction and concerns regarding potential future pregnancies after surgery. Results: Both patients underwent procedures in the outpatient setting after discussion at multidisciplinary sarcoma tumor board. Laparoscopic enterolysis was performed to mobilize the bowel away from the abdominal wall, to allow direct visualization of the peritoneal aspect of the tumor, and to confirm adequacy of the posterior margin freeze of the lesion. Laparoscopic transversus abdominus preperitoneal (TAPP) blocks with local anesthetic were performed for postoperative pain control. Interventional radiology performed an ultrasound-guided cryoablation consisting of two freeze and thaw cycles. Both patients recovered well without complications and were without radiographic evidence of persistent or recurrent disease at 12 and 18 months postoperatively, respectively. Conclusion: We report a novel approach of laparoscopic-assisted cryoablation for the treatment of abdominal wall soft tissue tumors. This allowed for successful minimally invasive local control of these large tumors that would have otherwise required highly morbid resections with complex abdominal wall reconstruction and mesh repair. The abundances of main carbon- and oxygen-bearing gases in the atmospheres of giant exoplanets provide insights into atmospheric chemistry and planet formation processes1,2. Thermochemistry suggests that methane (CH4) should be the dominant carbon-bearing species below about 1,000 K over a range of plausible atmospheric compositions3; this is the case for the solar system planets4 and has been confirmed in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and self-luminous, directly imaged exoplanets5. However, CH4 has not yet been definitively detected with space-based spectroscopy in the atmosphere of a transiting exoplanet6–11, but a few detections have been made with ground-based, high-resolution transit spectroscopy12,13 including a tentative detection for WASP-80b (ref. 14). Here we report transmission and emission spectra spanning 2.4–4.0 μm of the 825 K warm Jupiter WASP-80b taken with the NIRCam instrument of the JWST, both of which show strong evidence of CH4 at greater than 6σ significance. The Aerosol Cloud meTeorology Interactions oVer the western ATlantic Experiment (ACTIVATE) field campaign provides accurate data for aerosol characterization and trace gas profiles, and establishes knowledge of the relationships between aerosols and water. The dropsonde dataset provides an in situ characterization of the vertical thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere during 165 research flights by NASA Langley's King Air research aircraft between February 2020 and June 2022 and four test flights between December 2019 and November 2021. The research flights covered the western North Atlantic region, off the coast of the Eastern United States and around Bermuda and covered all seasons. The dropsonde profiles provide observations of temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and horizontal and vertical winds between the surface and about 9 km. 801 dropsondes were released, of which 796 were processed and 788 provide complete profiles of all parameters between the flight level and the surface with normal parachute performance. Granulomas often form around pathogens that cause chronic infections. Here, we discover an innate granuloma model in mice with an environmental bacterium called Chromobacterium violaceum. Granuloma formation not only successfully walls off, but also clears, the infection. The infected lesion can arise from a single bacterium that replicates despite the presence of a neutrophil swarm. Bacterial replication ceases when macrophages organize around the infection and form a granuloma. This granuloma response is accomplished independently of adaptive immunity that is typically required to organize granulomas. The C. violaceum-induced granuloma requires at least two separate defense pathways, gasdermin D and iNOS, to maintain the integrity of the granuloma architecture. This innate granuloma successfully eradicates C. violaceum infection. Therefore, this C. violaceum-induced granuloma model demonstrates that innate immune cells successfully organize a granuloma and thereby resolve infection by an environmental pathogen. Pathogens often persist within granulomas which form to control infection. Background: ADHD polygenic scores (PGSs) have been previously shown to predict ADHD outcomes in several studies. However, ADHD PGSs are typically correlated with ADHD but not necessarily reflective of causal mechanisms. More research is needed to elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ADHD. We leveraged functional annotation information into an ADHD PGS to (1) improve the prediction performance over a non-annotated ADHD PGS and (2) test whether volumetric variation in brain regions putatively associated with ADHD mediate the association between PGSs and ADHD outcomes. Methods: Data were from the Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort (N = 555). Multiple mediation models were tested to examine the indirect effects of two ADHD PGSs—one using a traditional computation involving clumping and thresholding and another using a functionally annotated approach (i.e., AnnoPred)—on ADHD inattention (IA) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (HI) symptoms, via gray matter volumes in the cingulate gyrus, angular gyrus, caudate, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and inferior temporal lobe. Results: A direct effect was detected between the AnnoPred ADHD PGS and IA symptoms in adolescents. No indirect effects via brain volumes were detected for either IA or HI symptoms. However, both ADHD PGSs were negatively associated with the DLPFC. Conclusions: The AnnoPred ADHD PGS was a more developmentally specific predictor of adolescent IA symptoms compared to the traditional ADHD PGS. However, brain volumes did not mediate the effects of either a traditional or AnnoPred ADHD PGS on ADHD symptoms, suggesting that we may still be underpowered in clarifying brain-based biomarkers for ADHD using genetic measures. There are no planets intermediate in size between Earth and Neptune in our Solar System, yet these objects are found around a substantial fraction of other stars1. Population statistics show that close-in planets in this size range bifurcate into two classes on the basis of their radii2,3. It is proposed that the group with larger radii (referred to as ‘sub-Neptunes’) is distinguished by having hydrogen-dominated atmospheres that are a few percent of the total mass of the planets4. GJ 1214b is an archetype sub-Neptune that has been observed extensively using transmission spectroscopy to test this hypothesis5–14. However, the measured spectra are featureless, and thus inconclusive, due to the presence of high-altitude aerosols in the planet’s atmosphere. Here we report a spectroscopic thermal phase curve of GJ 1214b obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in the mid-infrared. The dayside and nightside spectra (average brightness temperatures of 553 ± 9 and 437 ± 19 K, respectively) each show more than 3σ evidence of absorption features, with H2O as the most likely cause in both. The measured global thermal emission implies that GJ 1214b’s Bond albedo is 0.51 ± 0.06. Eye tracking and other behavioral measurements collected from patient-participants in their hospital rooms afford a unique opportunity to study natural behavior for basic and clinical translational research. We describe an immersive social and behavioral paradigm implemented in patients undergoing evaluation for surgical treatment of epilepsy, with electrodes implanted in the brain to determine the source of their seizures. Our studies entail collecting eye tracking with other behavioral and psychophysiological measurements from patient-participants during unscripted behavior, including social interactions with clinical staff, friends, and family in the hospital room. This approach affords a unique opportunity to study the neurobiology of natural social behavior, though it requires carefully addressing distinct logistical, technical, and ethical challenges. Collecting neurophysiological data synchronized to behavioral and psychophysiological measures helps us to study the relationship between behavior and physiology. Combining across these rich data sources while participants eat, read, converse with friends and family, etc., enables clinical-translational research aimed at understanding the participants' disorders and clinician–patient interactions, as well as basic research into natural, real-world behavior. We discuss data acquisition, quality control, annotation, and analysis pipelines that are required for our studies. Vegetation indices (VI), especially the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), are used to determine management units (MU) and to explain quantity and quality of vineyard production. How do NDVI maps from different sensing technologies differ in a production context? What part of the variability of yield and quality can they explain? This study compares high-resolution multispectral, multi-temporal data from CropCircle, SpectroSense + GPS, Parrot Sequoia + multispectral camera equipped UAV, and Sentinel-2 imagery over two seasons (2019 and 2020). The objective was to assess whether the date of data collection (phenological growth stage) influences the correlations between NDVI and crop production. The comparison of vineyard NDVI data from proximal and remote sensing in both a statistical and a productive context showed strong similarities between NDVI values from similar sensors (0.69 < r < 0.96), but divergences between proximal and airborne/spaceborne observations. Exploratory correlation analysis between NDVI layers and grape yield and total soluble solids data (TSS) showed high correlations (maximum |r|= 0.91 and |r|= 0.74, respectively), with correlations increasing as the season progressed. No relationship with must titratable acidity or pH was found. Finally, proximal sensors explained better the variability in yield and quality for grapes in the early and late growth stages. The UAV's MUs described the yield of both years better than the other sensors. In 2019, the PCA-based MUs explained the TSS variability better than the UAV-related zones. The population distribution in Canada across subnational jurisdictions exhibits significant inequality. Precipitous growth within concentrated urban agglomerations, culminating in severe rural depopulation, has perpetuated existing subnational population growth disparities. More densely populated metropolitan areas are experiencing an increasing proportion of the aggregate population, while ruralized jurisdictions succumb to a dramatic population exodus. Accordingly, the geographic dispersion of the Canadian population has become increasingly skewed, and thus a substantial proportion of the national populace is concentrated within a handful of metropolitan jurisdictions. The localization of growth within urbanized zones renders the geography of the population distribution increasingly volatile, thereby carving a fault line into the landscape of the national economy. Using census data from 1991 to the most recent (2021), this study formulates a novel quantification of the unequal distribution of population in Canada over time, utilizing an adaptation of the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient. The findings exhibit significant and growing inequality in the population distribution with a substantial proportion of the national populace concentrated within a few metropolitan areas. In-situ marine cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNCs), cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and CCN proxies, based on particle sizes and optical properties, are accumulated from seven field campaigns: ACTIVATE; NAAMES; CAMP2EX; ORACLES; SOCRATES; MARCUS; and CAPRICORN2. Each campaign involves aircraft measurements, ship-based measurements, or both. Measurements collected over the North and Central Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, and Southern Oceans, represent a range of clean to polluted conditions in various climate regimes. With the extensive range of environmental conditions sampled, this data collection is ideal for testing satellite remote detection methods of CDNC and CCN in marine environments. Remote measurement methods are vital to expanding the available data in these difficult-to-reach regions of the Earth and improving our understanding of aerosol-cloud interactions. The data collection includes particle composition and continental tracers to identify potential contributing CCN sources. Several of these campaigns include High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) and polarimetric imaging measurements and retrievals that will be the basis for the next generation of space-based remote sensors and, thus, can be utilized as satellite surrogates. The advanced use of complex tools is considered a primary characteristic of human evolution and technological advancement. However, questions remain regarding whether humans possess unique underlying brain networks that support advanced tool-using abilities. Specifically, previous studies have demonstrated the presence of a structurally and functionally unique region in the left anterior supramarginal gyrus (aSMG), that is consistently active during tool use action observation. This region has been proposed as a primary hub for integrating semantic and technical information to form action plans with tools. However, it is still largely unknown how tool use motor learning affects left aSMG activation or connectivity with other brain regions. To address this, participants with little experience using chopsticks observed an experimenter using chopsticks to perform a novel task while undergoing two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. Between the scans, participants underwent four weeks of behavioral training where they learned to use chopsticks and achieve proficiency in the observed task. Results demonstrated a significant change in effective connectivity between the left aSMG and the left anterior intraparietal sulcus (aIPS), a region involved in object affordances and planning grasping actions. These findings suggest that during unfamiliar tool use, the left aSMG integrates semantic and technical information to communicate with regions involved with grasp selection, such as the aIPS. Within social dominance hierarchies, rank has a major impact on health and fitness. Dominance hierarchies are rarely stable as individuals may change rank due to changes in the social environment. Here we describe general group-level social network properties and changes in social ties and behavior during rank transitions in 16 communities of the cichlid Astatotilapia burtoni. Social networks based on chases were dense with dominant males frequently chasing subordinate males and females. This intense territoriality of dominant males was also reflected by a high degree of 'power' inequality. Compared to chase-based networks, display-based networks were characterized by a high degree of reciprocity due to display behaviors mostly occurring bidirectionally among a few highly ranked males. Territory ownership is tightly linked to social dominance and territory loss (i.e., social descent) was, as expected, associated with a sharp reduction in aggression level and an increase in chases received. However, although territory acquisition (i.e., social ascent) was an abrupt process, ascending males displayed elevated aggression prior to ascent, in sharp contrast to previous studies carried out in less complex settings. Purpose of Review: BPH is prevalent in men above the age of 50. The standard surgical treatment (TURP) has good clinical outcomes among the different treatment options, but it is associated with functional side effects as the urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. This has led to many innovations in the minimal invasive therapies of the prostate aiming to get equivalent outcomes to the TURP but with less side effects. Recent Findings: Prostate artery embolization is one of these therapies which has recently granted acceptance by the NICE as one of the treatment options for BPH. Recent publications have shown the effectiveness of this technique in improving the lower urinary tract symptoms with minimal side effects. Summary: Owing to the ischemic changes that happens to the prostate following the procedure, patients may experience post embolization syndrome which in few cases may cause high grade morbidities. Purpose: Adverse effects following fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy regimens are common. However, there are no current accepted diagnostic markers for prediction prior to treatment, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine genetic and non-genetic predictors of adverse effects. Methods: Genomic DNA was analyzed for 25 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Demographics, comorbidities, cancer and fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy regimen types, and adverse effect data were obtained from clinical records for 155 Australian White participants. Associations were determined by bivariate analysis, logistic regression modeling and Bayesian network analysis. Results: Twelve different adverse effects were observed in the participants, the most common severe adverse effect was diarrhea (12.9%). Bivariate analysis revealed associations between all adverse effects except neutropenia, between genetic and non-genetic predictors, and between 8 genetic and 12 non-genetic predictors with more than 1 adverse effect. Logistic regression modeling of adverse effects revealed a greater/sole role for six genetic predictors in overall gastrointestinal toxicity, nausea and/or vomiting, constipation, and neutropenia, and for nine non-genetic predictors in diarrhea, mucositis, neuropathy, generalized pain, hand–foot syndrome, skin toxicity, cardiotoxicity and fatigue. The Bayesian network analysis revealed less directly associated predictors (one genetic and six non-genetic) with adverse effects and confirmed associations between six adverse effects, eight genetic predictors and nine non-genetic predictors. Conclusion: This study is the first to link both genetic and non-genetic predictors with adverse effects following fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy. Collectively, we report a wealth of information that warrants further investigation to elucidate the clinical significance, especially associations with genetic predictors and adverse effects. The TRAPPIST-1 system is remarkable for its seven planets that are similar in size, mass, density and stellar heating to the rocky planets Venus, Earth and Mars in the Solar System1. All the TRAPPIST-1 planets have been observed with transmission spectroscopy using the Hubble or Spitzer space telescopes, but no atmospheric features have been detected or strongly constrained2–5. TRAPPIST-1 b is the closest planet to the M-dwarf star of the system, and it receives four times as much radiation as Earth receives from the Sun. This relatively large amount of stellar heating suggests that its thermal emission may be measurable. Here we present photometric secondary eclipse observations of the Earth-sized exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 b using the F1500W filter of the mid-infrared instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We detect the secondary eclipses in five separate observations with 8.7σ confidence when all data are combined. These measurements are most consistent with re-radiation of the incident flux of the TRAPPIST-1 star from only the dayside hemisphere of the planet. The most straightforward interpretation is that there is little or no planetary atmosphere redistributing radiation from the host star and also no detectable atmospheric absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) or other species.Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope suggest that the exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 b has little or no planetary atmosphere and no detectable atmospheric absorption of carbon dioxide. Opioids have been used to manage pain for thousands of years, but they have significant potential for abuse. Prescription opioids, like oxycodone, are associated with 32% of overdoses, that have reached a total of 75,673 deaths in 2021. A major challenge is maximizing their therapeutic potential while minimizing the negative side effects including opioid use disorder (OUD). The Ketogenic Diet (KD) has been reported to reduce pain and decrease the severity of alcohol use disorder, yet its effects on oxycodone responses remain unknown. KD mice displayed increased oxycodone-induced locomotor activity and enhanced antinociceptive effects of oxycodone, suggesting a dietary effect on opiate sensitivity. Male KD mice exposed to chronic oxycodone exhibited increased naloxone-induced jumps, suggesting a sex-specific effect of diet on opioid withdrawal. Consistent with this, male KD mice self-administered less oxycodone while female KD mice did not differ from controls. Finally, no effect of KD on motivation to obtain oxycodone was observed during a progressive ratio schedule. These data suggest sex-biased effects of KD on responses to opioids that should be considered and potentially leveraged in both clinical pain management and treatment of OUD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Epilepsy following non-accidental trauma (NAT) occurs in 18% of pediatric patients. About 33% of patients with epilepsy develop drug-resistant epilepsy. For these patients, vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a palliative treatment option. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of VNS among pediatric NAT-related epilepsy patients compared to those with non-NAT-related epilepsy. Methods: We performed an 11-year retrospective analysis of VNS implantations for drug-resistant epilepsy at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Patients were split into two groups: NAT vs. non-NAT. The primary outcome was the attainment of ≥ 50% seizure frequency reduction at 1-year post-VNS implantation. Fisher's exact tests and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used to compare groups. Significance was assessed at the alpha = 0.05 level. Results: This analysis included data from 370 pediatric VNS patients, of whom 9 had NAT-related epilepsy. NAT patients had a significantly younger age of epilepsy onset than non-NAT patients (0.3 years vs. 3.3 years). Otherwise, there were no statistically significant baseline differences between groups, including patient sex and quantity of antiseizure medications pre-VNS. Overall, 71% of NAT patients experienced ≥ 50% seizure frequency reduction compared to 48% of non-NAT patients (p = 0.269). Conclusion: VNS may allow a higher proportion of pediatric patients with NAT-related epilepsy to achieve ≥ 50% seizure frequency reduction compared to other epilepsy etiologies. While the results of this study were not statistically significant, the effect size was large. Fire and grazing play an important role in managed rangeland ecosystems. These disturbances interact to shape plant communities and outcomes for rangeland biodiversity and livestock production. However, managers have a limited toolbox to reach vegetation management goals in shrub-steppe ecosystems. It is commonly assumed that deferring grazing for up to two growing seasons after a fire is necessary to ensure plant community recovery. We report on a 4-year long replicated experiment comparing the effects of season of fire (spring or fall) and sheep grazing deferment on sagebrush-steppe rangelands in east Idaho, USA. Deferment treatments included either no grazing for one or two growing seasons after fire, or no deferment, in which domestic sheep returned in the season after fire. We found no evidence that grazing deferment affected plant community composition in any plots compared to no grazing deferment, but deferred areas did have more litter relative to grazed areas 4 years after the fire. Burn treatment had a consistent effect on plant communities. One year after fire, spring and fall burned plots had 24 and 30% reductions in native shrub cover, respectively. After 4 years, fall and spring burned areas had moderate, statistically significant (14 and 9%, respectively) reductions in litter. Burned areas had less than 6% increases in perennial native grass cover, but no significant increases in invasive plants. The effects of fire and grazing management tools is context-dependent across climatic gradients in the sagebrush biome. We generalise this in two directions. Firstly, using work of the first-named author, we give a complete description of the action of Galois automorphisms on irreducible characters. Secondly, we extend both descriptions to cover the case of special orthogonal groups. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a key chemical species that is found in a wide range of planetary atmospheres. In the context of exoplanets, CO2 is an indicator of the metal enrichment (that is, elements heavier than helium, also called ‘metallicity’)1–3, and thus the formation processes of the primary atmospheres of hot gas giants4–6. It is also one of the most promising species to detect in the secondary atmospheres of terrestrial exoplanets7–9. Previous photometric measurements of transiting planets with the Spitzer Space Telescope have given hints of the presence of CO2, but have not yielded definitive detections owing to the lack of unambiguous spectroscopic identification10–12. Here we present the detection of CO2 in the atmosphere of the gas giant exoplanet WASP-39b from transmission spectroscopy observations obtained with JWST as part of the Early Release Science programme13,14. The data used in this study span 3.0–5.5 micrometres in wavelength and show a prominent CO2 absorption feature at 4.3 micrometres (26-sigma significance). The overall spectrum is well matched by one-dimensional, ten-times solar metallicity models that assume radiative–convective–thermochemical equilibrium and have moderate cloud opacity. These models predict that the atmosphere should have water, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide in addition to CO2, but little methane. Furthermore, we also tentatively detect a small absorption feature near 4.0 micrometres that is not reproduced by these models.Transmission spectroscopy observations from the James Webb Space Telescope show the detection of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the gas giant exoplanet WASP-39b. Latency-based metrics of attentional capture are limited: They indicate whether or not capture occurred, but they do not indicate how often capture occurred. The present study introduces a new technique for estimating the probability of capture. In a spatial cueing paradigm, participants searched for a target letter defined by color while attempting to ignore salient cues that were drawn in either a relevant or irrelevant color. The results demonstrated the typical contingent capture effect: larger cue validity effects from relevant cues than irrelevant cues. Importantly, using a novel analytical approach, we were able to estimate the probability that the salient cue captured attention. This approach revealed a surprisingly low probability of attentional capture in the spatial cuing paradigm. Relevant cues are thought to be one of the strongest attractors of attention, yet they were estimated to capture attention on only about 30% of trials. Background: Postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) is associated with significant morbidity. Evidence from other surgical specialties demonstrate inadequate use of extended VTE prophylaxis following cancer surgery. While guidelines recommend extended VTE prophylaxis for patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC), it is unknown to what extent colon and rectal surgeons adhere to these recommendations. Methods: An 18-question online survey was distributed to all surgeon members of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). The survey was designed to capture knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding ASCRS VTE prevention guidelines. Questions were also designed to elucidate barriers to adopting these guidelines. Results: The survey was distributed to 2,316 ASCRS-member surgeons and there were 201 complete responses (8.7% response rate). Most respondents (136/201, 68%) reported that they were familiar with ASCRS VTE prevention guidelines and used them to guide their practice. Extended VTE prophylaxis was reported to be routinely prescribed by the majority of surgeons following CRC resection (109/201, 54%), with an additional 27% reporting selective prescribing (55/201). The most frequently reported reasons for not prescribing extended VTE chemoprophylaxis following CRC resection included patient compliance and insurance/copay issues. Conclusion: Most ASCRS-member surgeon respondents reported that they are familiar with ASCRS VTE prevention guidelines, though only 54% surgeons reported routinely prescribing extended VTE prophylaxis following CRC surgery. Patient compliance and insurance issues were identified as the most common barriers. Targeted interventions at the surgeon, patient, and payer level are required to increase the use of extended VTE prophylaxis following CRC resection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review our development of wavelength tuneable, high average power, picosecond-pulse, mid-infrared sources in the three micron widow for proposed application in tissue ablation studies and with the objective of source simplification and exploring the potential of all-fiber integration. Initial systems were based on difference frequency generation (DFG) of two synchronous master oscillator power fiber amplifier (MOPFA) schemes. The generated idler was tuneable over the range 3.28–3.45 m, delivering greater than 3 W of average power, with a maximum pump to total DFG power conversion efficiency of 78 . By simplifying the seed sources through synchronised in-line modulation of cw diode laser sources, more than 6 W was generated 3.31–3.48 m with similar efficiency and with near diffraction limited beam quality (). In an improved and significantly simplified experimental configuration a source emitting around 3 m was developed employing a novel cascaded nonlinear conversion architecture. Picosecond pulses from a 1.064 m mode-locked Yb:fiber pump laser were used to generate 1.65 m signal pulses through based four-wave mixing in a polarisation preserving photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The output of the PCF was then directly focused into a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal, generating idler radiation around 3 m, with peak powers of 0.5 kW, via -based three-wave mixing between the pump and signal pulses. This review aims to identify and evaluate digital interventions for social participation in the growing population of adults with long-term physical conditions. Articles were sourced from MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases using subject headings and keywords related to “social participation” and “digital technology”. Studies that adopted digital technology interventions to improve social participation in adults with long-term physical conditions were included. Data on study methodology, participant and digital intervention characteristics, and findings related to social participation were extracted. The search yielded a total of 4646 articles and 14 articles met criteria for final review with five randomized controlled trials, two non-randomized clinical trials and seven one-group pretest–posttest clinical trials. Studies were organized based on the digital intervention strategy implemented to improve social participation: group support (n = 4), individual skill training or counseling (n = 6), education and support (n = 3), and mixed intervention (n = 1). The group support interventions developed a social network among participants through videoconference, app, or virtual reality platform. Three studies reported positive improvements in different aspects of social participation. Individual skill training or counseling mainly utilized phone calls to help participants cope with activity participation and interpersonal relationship issues. Only two studies demonstrated benefits for social participation. The education and support intervention, which used messages and website information to increase participants’ knowledge and provide support, showed positive findings in three studies. This review suggests digital interventions for improving social participation in adults with long-term physical conditions are feasible and the effectiveness of different strategies may vary. Recent anatomical studies have shown connections between the basal ganglia and the cerebellum. The basal ganglia and cerebellum are major subcortical structures that influence motor and cognitive functions. Recent neuroimaging and animal studies have suggested the role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease. However, the role of cerebellar oscillations in PD has not been studied. Here, we recruited 75 PD and 39 healthy control subjects to collect cerebellar EEG during a resting-state condition. We followed the recently published protocols to collect cerebellar oscillations. Relative spectral power was computed in the delta, theta, beta, and gamma frequency bands. Further, we performed classifier methods to differentiate PD subjects from controls. We observed significantly increased theta-band (4–7 Hz) relative power in the cerebellar electrodes in PD subjects compared to controls. We also found differences in different frequency bands between mid-cerebellar and nearby mid-occipital EEG signals. Classification analysis using mid-cerebellar theta relative power showed differentiation between PD and control groups. Our results demonstrate that in addition to established cortical and basal ganglia oscillations, abnormal cerebellar oscillations in the theta-band may also participate in the underlying pathophysiology of PD. We suggest that low-frequency cerebellar oscillations may be a potential target for non-invasive neuromodulation to improve PD symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
