Ratoon rice is considered an eco-friendly and resource-efficient method for rice cultivation, providing innovative strategies to mitigate the global food crisis. To clarify the critical yield components for achieving high annual grain yield in ratoon rice, data from 136 widely cultivated rice cultivars were collected through a six-year field experiment. The study analyzed the correlations between yield components and yields for both the main season and the ratoon season, indicating that main yields vary between 5.9 and 10.9 Mg ha−1, exhibiting a highly significant positive correlation with spikelets per panicle; ratoon yields range from 1.8 to 7.1 Mg ha−1, showing a highly significant positive correlation with panicles per m2, grain filling rate, and 1000-grain weight. Path analysis reveals that, in terms of contributing to ratoon yield, the grain filling rate is the most influential component, followed by panicles per m2, and 1000-grain weight. Therefore, by selecting large-panicle cultivars in the main season and enhancing panicles per m2, grain filling rate, and grain weight in the ratoon season, high annual yield in ratoon rice can be realized. Background and aims: Sustainable rice production is crucial for addressing food security and mitigating climate change. Optimizing irrigation techniques that strike a balance between rice yields and carbon sequestration has gained significant attention. Intermittent irrigation has been considered a compromise between these two factors. However, uncertainties persist regarding the impact of intermittent irrigation on ratoon rice cultivation. Methods: To address this, we conducted field experiments to investigate the influence of intermittent irrigation on rice yield and CO2/CH4 emissions in ratoon rice systems at Qianshanhong Farm, located in Yiyang, Hunan Province, China. We utilized a portable greenhouse gas analyzer from Los Gatos Research (LGR) alongside the closed chamber method to measure gas fluxes accurately. The experiments were conducted on Huanghuazhan rice cultivar, with each plot encompassing 45 m2. The experiments included intermittent irrigation treatment and conventional flooded irrigation treatment as a control. Results: The study found that the ecosystem respiration (ER), heterotrophic soil respiration (HR), Gross primary productivity (GPP), Plant autotrophic respiration (PR), and total accumulated CH4 emissions from the ecosystem ( E CH 4 ) of ratoon rice decreased owing to intermittent irrigation. Intermittent irrigation increased rice yield and biomass by 6.04% and 3.88%, respectively, but the differences were not significant (P > 0.05). However, ratoon rice exhibited increased Net ecosystem photosynthetic exchange (NEE), Net primary productivity (NPP), and Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) after intermittent irrigation. Furthermore, there was a 57.78% reduction in the global warming potential (GWP) of the sum CO2-eq of CO2 and CH4 flux throughout the intermittent irrigation period. Conclusions: Intermittent irrigation of ratoon rice decreased C release from the rice ecosystem while maintaining yields, therefore this approach is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In present study, sodium salt of α-naphthalene acetic acid (NA), potassium salt of fulvic acid (KF) and their combinations were applied to the growth substrates of tomato seedlings (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under chilling stress. The changes in aboveground biomass, root attributes, pigment contents, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthesis, osmotic regulation substances, and antioxidant enzymes activity of the tomato seedlings in response to NA and KF were investigated. The application of NA, KF and their combination could promote the growth of plant height and stem diameter of tomato seedlings under chilling stress to varying degrees, and improve root characteristics by increasing root volume, root length and root activity, and increase dry matter accumulation. In addition, the combined use of NA and KF improved the seedling leaf chlorophyll content, qP, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII , Pn and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the tomato plants. The above results suggested a synergistic effect between NA and KF to stimulate the seedlings growth and to enhance the ROS scavenging ability of tomato, which has never been reported in previous research before. The uniformity of the rice cluster distribution in the field affects population quality and the precise management of pesticides and fertilizers. However, there is no appropriate technical system for estimating and evaluating the uniformity at present. For that reason, a method based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV images) is proposed to estimate and evaluate the uniformity in this present study. This method includes rice cluster recognition and location determination based on the RGB color characteristics of the seedlings of aerial images, region segmentation considering the rice clusters based on Voronoi Diagram, and uniformity index definition for evaluating the rice cluster distribution based on the variation coefficient. The results indicate the rice cluster recognition attains a high precision, with the precision, accuracy, recall, and F1-score of rice cluster recognition reaching > 95%, 97%, 97%, 95%, and 96%, respectively. The rice cluster location error is small and obeys the gamma (3.00, 0.54) distribution (mean error, 1.62 cm). The uniformity index is reasonable for evaluating the rice cluster distribution verified via simulation. As a whole process, the estimating method is sufficiently high accuracy with relative error less than 0.01% over the manual labeling method. Therefore, this method based on UAV images is feasible, convenient, technologically advanced, inexpensive, and highly precision for the estimation and evaluation of the rice cluster distribution uniformity. The COVID-19 pandemic has accounted for millions of infections and hundreds of thousand deaths worldwide in a short-time period. The patients demonstrate a great diversity in clinical and laboratory manifestations and disease severity. Nonetheless, little is known about the host genetic contribution to the observed interindividual phenotypic variability. Here, we report the first host genetic study in the Chinese population by deeply sequencing and analyzing 332 COVID-19 patients categorized by varying levels of severity from the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital. Upon a total of 22.2 million genetic variants, we conducted both single-variant and gene-based association tests among five severity groups including asymptomatic, mild, moderate, severe, and critical ill patients after the correction of potential confounding factors. Pedigree analysis suggested a potential monogenic effect of loss of function variants in GOLGA3 and DPP7 for critically ill and asymptomatic disease demonstration. Genome-wide association study suggests the most significant gene locus associated with severity were located in TMEM189–UBE2V1 that involved in the IL-1 signaling pathway. The p.Val197Met missense variant that affects the stability of the TMPRSS2 protein displays a decreasing allele frequency among the severe patients compared to the mild and the general population. We identified that the HLA-A*11:01, B*51:01, and C*14:02 alleles significantly predispose the worst outcome of the patients. This initial genomic study of Chinese patients provides genetic insights into the phenotypic difference among the COVID-19 patient groups and highlighted genes and variants that may help guide targeted efforts in containing the outbreak. Using symbiotic farming methods [cover crops and chicken grazing (+ C)] in a winter fallow field, we found that the soil organic matter and total nitrogen of the + C treatment were 5.2% and 26.6% higher, respectively, than those of a treatment with cover crops and no chicken grazing (− C). The annual rice grain yield of the + C treatment was 3.8% higher than that of the − C treatment and 12.3% higher than that of the bare fallow field (CK), while the annual CH4 emissions of the + C treatment were 26.9% lower than those of the − C treatment and 10.6% lower than those of the CK treatment. The 100-year global warming potential of the + C treatment was 6.2% lower than that of the − C treatment. Therefore, the use of winter cover crops and chicken grazing in a winter fallow field was effective at reducing CH4 emissions and significantly improving soil nutrients and rice yield. Elastic sowing dates (ESDs) are correlated with rice grain yield. ESD is the easiest factor for farmers to manipulate in mechanized large-scale farming. In this study, field experiments were conducted over a 2-year period to determine the effects of different sowing dates on growth duration, effective accumulated temperature, and yield attributes in two early- and late-season machine-transplanted rice cultivars. In early rice (ER), a delay in the sowing date led to decreased grain yield and shorter growth duration. In late rice (LR), delayed sowing led to significantly lower grain yield and prolonged growth duration. In LR, significantly positive correlations were detected between effective accumulated temperature in the post-heading stage and both filling ratio and yield. Reproductive redundancy increased markedly in LR, by 7.72% over a 5-day interval. We determined that the ESDs for LR were 10 days later than the control, and that of ER was recommend early sowing rather than late sowing. These findings suggest a new strategy to meet the demands of mechanized large-scale rice farming: the development of thermal sensitive high-yield long-duration ER cultivars and high-yield short-duration LR cultivars. Agriculture faces great challenges to ensure global food security by increasing yields while reducing environmental costs. Here we address this challenge by conducting a total of 153 site-year field experiments covering the main agro-ecological areas for rice, wheat and maize production in China. A set of integrated soil-crop system management practices based on a modern understanding of crop ecophysiology and soil biogeochemistry increases average yields for rice, wheat and maize from 7.2 million grams per hectare (Mg ha−1), 7.2 Mg ha−1 and 10.5 Mg ha−1 to 8.5 Mg ha−1, 8.9 Mg ha−1 and 14.2 Mg ha−1, respectively, without any increase in nitrogen fertilizer. Model simulation and life-cycle assessment show that reactive nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced substantially by integrated soil-crop system management. If farmers in China could achieve average grain yields equivalent to 80% of this treatment by 2030, over the same planting area as in 2012, total production of rice, wheat and maize in China would be more than enough to meet the demand for direct human consumption and a substantially increased demand for animal feed, while decreasing the environmental costs of intensive agriculture. Aims: Although water conservation in rice production has become increasingly important, the effects of water management on the allocation and dynamics of carbon (C) within the rice-soil system remain unknown. Methods: We compared the allocation and dynamics of C assimilated by rice under continuously flooded, non-flooded and alternate water regimes. Rice ( Oryza sative L. cv. Luliangyou 996) was labeled with CO and harvested 7 times within 45 days. Results: More C was released from roots into the soil in non-flooded and alternate water regimes treatments. Microbial C decreased with time after the labeling and was lowest under flooded condition. Roots and rhizomicrobial respiration followed the order of non-flooded > alternate water regimes > flooded treatment. Water management affected C distribution in aggregates with more C in macroaggregates in the non-flooded treatment. Estimated amounts of C transferred remaining belowground by rice 45 days after labeling were 1,986, 2,827 and 2,472 kg C ha, of which rhizodeposition accounted for about 41 %, 16 % and 30 % of C transferred belowground under non-flooded, flooded and alternate water regimes, respectively. Conclusions: Water management affected the allocation and dynamics of recently assimilated C within the rice-soil system and also changed the relative contribution of rhizodeposition to C transferred belowground. Excessive nitrogen (N) application to rice ( Oryza sativa L.) crop in China causes environmental pollution, increases the cost of rice farming, reduces grain yield and contributes to global warming. Scientists from the International Rice Research Institute have collaborated with partners in China to improve rice N fertilization through site-specific N management (SSNM) in China since 1997. Field experiments and demonstration trials were conducted initially in Zhejiang province and gradually expanded to Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangsu, Hubei and Heilongjiang provinces. On average, SSNM reduced N fertilizer by 32% and increased grain yield by 5% compared with farmers' N practices. The yield increase was associated with the reduction in insect and disease damage and improved lodging resistance of rice crop under the optimal N inputs. The main reason for poor fertilizer N use efficiency of rice crop in China is that most rice farmers apply too much N fertilizer, especially at the early vegetative stage. We observed about 50% higher indigenous N supply capacity in irrigated rice fields in China than in other major rice-growing countries. Furthermore, yield response of rice crop to N fertilizer application is low in China, around 1.5 t ha on average. However, these factors were not considered by rice researchers and extension technicians in determining the N fertilizer rate for recommendation to rice farmers in China. After a decade of research on SSNM in China and other Asian rice-growing countries, we believe SSNM is a matured technology for improving both fertilizer N use efficiency and grain yield of rice crop. Our challenges are to further simplify the procedure of SSNM and to convince policy-makers of the effectiveness of this technology in order to facilitate a wider adoption of SSNM among rice farmers in China. Maturity stage in harvesting time greatly affects seed vigour. This work aimed to scientific harvesting time of hybrid rice for being high vigour with high & stable seed yield. Field experiments of different harvesting time were conducted in 2013–2014, and germination percentage (GP), vigour index (VI), seed moisture content and 1000-grain weight was determined. Both GP and VI progressively increased to peaks and then began to decline with harvesting time delayed, and the regression coefficients of varieties were ranged from 0.7214 to 0.9066. In addition, difference values between tangent points (ΔX) of GP were higher than that of VI according to the quadratic functions. Based on seed vigour through the divided range from 75% to 125% of peak value, optimum harvesting time of IIY-416, JY-167, Yliangyou-1 (YLY-1) ranged from 17 to 27, 15 to 23 and 17 to 23 days after the completion of artificial pollination (DACAP), respectively. Moreover, when seedlots harvested from 17 to 23 DACAP, no significant difference was found on 1000-grain weight and the seed moisture content was kept relatively low (19–25%). Therefore, it can be concluded that hybrid rice seed can be earlier-harvest based on seed vigour, and 17 to 23 DACAP can be recommended as optimum harvesting time during hybrid rice seed production.
