The entry mode decision is a critical topic in international business. Several studies have tested the antecedents of entry mode choices and compared the outcomes after entry. However, the results reported in these studies are contradictory and difficult to explain. Furthermore, the reviews using qualitative approaches cannot statistically combine empirical results and fail to fully discuss these relationships. Additionally, the mediating effects remain unexamined in the existing studies. Drawing upon transaction cost economics and the resource-based view, this paper presents a meta-analysis that combines entry mode choices, antecedents and post-entry outcomes to address these issues. This meta-analysis is based on 1499 effect sizes from 230 published empirical studies. This study focuses on 15 antecedents as well as post-entry performance and survival of entry mode choices. In addition to bivariate relationships (i.e. how a single antecedent affects entry mode choices), the paper uses meta-analytic structural equation modelling to analyse the mediating effects of entry mode choices on the antecedent - outcome relationship. To investigate comparative short-term outcomes of robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) versus video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for older non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Patients ≥ 65 years old with stage I–III NSCLC operated with RAS or VATS from 2016 to 2018 were consecutively included. Propensity score-matched (PSM) method was implemented to balance inter-group biases. Totally 376 participants (224 with VATS and 152 with RAS) were included. After PSM, a cohort (144 with VATS and 107 with RAS) was generated with balanced baseline characteristics. RAS was significantly superior over VATS in the majority of perioperative outcomes, such as operating time (120.8 vs. 165.1 min), conversion rate (0.0% vs. 19.4%), and length of stay (8.6 vs. 10.8 days). RAS versus VATS was significantly associated with comparable rates of postoperative complications (OR 0.642, 95% CI 0.311–1.327), except the rate of pneumonia (OR 0.161, 95% CI 0.048–0.544). RAS leads to analogous postoperative complications and seemingly accelerates the recovery time of older NSCLC patients compared with VATS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high self-esteem (HSE) heterogeneity hypothesis provides a new research perspective for investigating differences in the quantity and quality of different types of self-esteem. The present study adopted the emotional Stroop paradigm and the odd-one-out search task to explore how individuals with different types of self-esteem process social information in self-threatening situations. The results showed that individuals with different types of self-esteem had an attentional bias toward negative information and had different attentional biases toward angry faces in self-threatening situations. Individuals with fragile HSE and low self-esteem showed facilitated attention to angry faces and had difficulty drawing attention away from them; secure HSE individuals only showed difficulty disengaging attention from angry faces. More and more firms are entering foreign markets. However, while research on international entry and expansion has been a particularly important topic in the literature, there has been a dearth of empirical research explaining firms' exit decisions from foreign markets. To address this gap in the literature, this study examines the exit behavior of emerging market MNCs. More specifically, we explore the firms' exit behavior in the context of the headquarters-foreign affiliate relationship. To this end, this study develops a model whereby the impact of performance on the firms' exit decision is moderated by innovation capability and international experience. Using secondary and primary data collected from multiple respondents from Chinese outward foreign direct investment firms, the findings indicate that innovation capability moderates the relationship between performance and exit decision. However, and contrary to expectations, the study suggests that incremental and radical innovation have an opposite contingent effect on the performance-exit relationship. In addition, the moderating effect of innovation capability on the performance-exit relationship was further moderated by international experience. Background: Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) has been shown to be a feasible technique for the treatment of esophageal cancer; however, its postoperative morbidity remains high. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the effect of postoperative complications on long-term outcomes in patients who have undergone MIE for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).Methods: This retrospective study enrolled patients who had undergone MIE for ESCC between September 2009 and November 2014; all procedures were performed by a single surgical team. Relevant patient characteristics and postoperative variables were collected and evaluated. The disease-free survival (DFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were determined by the Kaplan-Meier method, and compared by log-rank tests. Possible predictors of survival were subjected to univariate analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis.Results: In all, data on 214 patients with ESCC were analyzed, including 170 men and 44 women. All study subjects had undergone thoracoscopic or thoracoscopic-laparoscopic esophagectomy and cervical esophagogastric anastomosis. One hundred and thirty patients (60.7%) had postoperative complications (Grades 1-4). The overall DFS and DSS rates were 80.0 and 88.9% at 1 year, 48.6 and 54.2% at 3 years, and 43.2 and 43.5% at 5 years, respectively. Univariate analysis and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis showed that T stage, N stage, and tumor grade were independent prognostic factors for long-term survival; however, postoperative complications had no significant effect on the DFS or DSS of this patient cohort (log-rank test, p = 0.354 and 0.160, respectively).Conclusions: Postoperative complications have no significant effect on long-term survival in patients who have undergone MIE for ESCC. The study analyzes the interdependence between the component of marketing-mix strategy in international performance using multivariate analysis. Moreover, meta-regression analysis was also applied to examine the subgroups as potential moderators in the relationships on marketing-standardization performance.

We report a case of pulmonary adenofibroma, a rare benign soft-tissue tumor characterized by a combination of glandular and spindle stromal elements, in a 55-year-old man. This case is interesting because of the unusual X-ray and computed tomography (CT) imaging findings of a well-defined, subpleural soft-tissue nodule in the inferior lobe of the left lung, which showed no enhancement after contrast scan. The tumor was resected completely via video-assisted thoracoscopy. Microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations supported the diagnosis of a benign pulmonary adenofibroma. The patient remains well with no evidence of recurrence 16 months after surgery. Although the imaging findings were nonspecific, adenofibroma may be one of diagnostic inclusions of soft-tissue nodules of the lung in middle-aged patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel pyridostigmine bromide (PB)-phospholipid nanocomplex (PBPLC) was prepared to increase the bioavailability of PB. A central composite design approach was employed for process optimization. The physicochemical properties of PBPLC were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet spectroscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and the n-octano/water partition coefficient. The intestinal permeability of PBPLC was observed via a single pass intestinal perfusion in rats. After oral administration of PBPLC, the concentrations of PB at predetermined time points were determined by HPLC, and the pharmacokinetic parameters were computed by DAS 2.1.1 software. Multiple linear regression analysis for process optimization revealed that the optimal PBPLC was obtained when the values of X, X, and X were 8, 40°C, and 4 mg/mL, respectively. The average particle size and zeta potential of PBPLC with the optimized formulation were 204.60 nm and −25.12 mV, respectively. Non-covalent interactions between PB and phospholipids were found in the PBPLC. The n-octanol/water partition coefficient of PBPLC was substantially increased. PBPLC had better intestinal permeability in comparison with free PB. Mean plasma drug concentration-time curves of PBPLC and free PB after oral administration were both in accordance with the two-compartment open model. The values of pharmacokinetic parameters of PBPLC and free PB were the peak time (T) 2 h vs 2 h, the maximum concentration (C) 22.79 μg/mL vs 6.00 μg/mL, and the value of the area under the concentration vs time curve (AUC) 7128.21 μg·min/mL vs 1772.36 μg·min/mL, respectively. In conclusion, compared with free PB, PBPLC remarkably improves the oral bioavailability of PB, which is likely due to its higher lipophilicity and permeability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The systemic review and meta-analysis of the studies published during the past 10 years was designed to optimize the surgical procedures of video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VTS) to treat palmar hyperhidrosis (PH). Methods: Citations from 2000 to 2010 were included regarding the following aspects: selection of ganglia level for VTS, comparison of different techniques for VTS, evaluating clinical efficacy of intraoperative intrapleural analgesia, and postoperative intrapleural drainage. Major clinical outcomes are defined as: cases with postoperative resolution of symptoms, total cases with postoperative compensatory hyperhidrosis (CH), cases with severe or moderate CH, satisfied cases, evaluation of postoperative pain, and postoperative pneumothorax. Results: Systemic review indicates that T3 and T3-4 sympathectomy had the 'best' clinical efficacy. Meta-analysis suggests that efficacious rates of PH are nearly similar compared with multiple and single ganglia sympathectomy (100 vs. 95.6%). However, single-ganglia sympathectomy can render a lower risk of total CH compared with multiple-ganglia block. Risk of moderate/severe CH has a similar trend. Additionally, single-ganglia sympathectomy is more potent to satisfy patients postoperatively. One randomized, controlled trial (RCT) that compared different techniques for VTS indicated that the overall success rate of the operation was 95% and the differences were not statistically significant. Two RCTs indicated that there were significant differences between trial group (intraoperative intercostal nerve blocks using bupivacaine) and control group regarding the attenuation of postoperative pain. One RCT suggested that there was no significant difference with or without pleural drainage regarding the incidence of postoperative residual pneumothorax. Conclusions: T3 sympathectomy is supposed to be recommended for the treatment of PH regardless of using various techniques. Intraoperative intrapleural analgesia using bupivacaine or bupivacaine plus epinephrine is effective to prevent postoperative pain. Pleural drainage after VTS should be abandoned. Background visual scenes in which faces are perceived provide contextual information for facial expression processing. One type of background information, the language context, has a vital influence on facial expression processing. The current study is aimed to investigate the effect of the language context on facial expression processing by recording event-related potentials (ERPs). Experiment one adopted the facial expression categorization task to investigate the effects of different language contexts on emotional and non-emotional facial processing. Experiment two adopted the task-irrelevant paradigm to investigate whether the language context effect on facial expression processing was mandatory. The results found that (1) the language context affected facial expression processing. Facial expression processing was promoted when the language context was emotionally congruent with faces. Moreover, the language context had an evoking effect on neutral faces. To be detailed, neutral facial expressions were evoked to be judged as positive in the positive language context while as negative in the negative language context. (2) The language context effect still affected facial expression processing in a task-irrelevant paradigm. When the language context was emotionally incongruent with facial expressions, larger N170 and LPP amplitudes were elicited, indicating the inhibition of incongruent emotions.
