Only recently has the use of 3D-scanning technology enhanced our ability to consider shape using landmark approaches to geometric morphometrics (GM). Studies examining several types of anthropological datasets have provided mixed reviews of the utility of the third dimension in landmark GM shape analyses. In this paper we present the results of a study examining the methodological utility of three dimensions in landmark GM shape analysis of prehistoric stone points. We used GM to generate principal components (PCs) of shape variation from independent data sets of Clovis and Dalton points in different shape spaces using 2D and 3D versions of the same sample and examined variation in the distribution of shape variables on PCs generated for each data set. Results of uniform multivariate statistical tests performed on each dataset’s PCs were compared to observe whether 2D or 3D data is more effective at determining group membership. We then generated PCs of shape variation in the same shape space using dependent 2D and 3D datasets to observe whether 2D versions of the data cluster with corresponding 3D versions of each point in a PC biplot and multivariate cluster analysis. Results suggest that 2D GM analysis is as capable of discriminating between Clovis and Dalton points as analyses conducted with 3D data. However, those interested in manufacturing technology will benefit from information provided by 3D data sets, which can capture information such as original blank form and thinning strategies. The kinkajou (Potos flavus) is a South and Central American procyonid that can plantarflex and invert its hindfoot around multiple joints in order to fully reverse the hindfoot 180°. However, the myological and osteological adaptions that facilitate this behavior have not been quantified metrically. Osteological correlates of hindfoot reversal have been described in the past, but recent advances in data collection allow for a more comprehensive evaluation of shape differences. Osteological features of the astragalus (talus), calcaneus, and distal tibia of P. flavus were collected and compared to other carnivoran species, including species that are full, partial, and non-reversers of the hindfoot. Hindfoot reversing procyonids were found to possess a relatively smaller medial malleousl, a wider sustentaculum tali, narrower calcaneal tuberosity, and a relatively longer astragalus. In general, the dimensions of the astragalus tend to discriminate hindfoot reversing taxa from other locomotor categories more reliably than the dimensions of the calcaneus or distal tibia. A detailed dissection, description, and documentation of the hind limb muscles in P. flavus was undertaken, and we present the first comprehensive review of its muscular anatomy utilizing muscle maps of the pelvis, femur, tibia, and fibula. Potos flavus has well-developed plantarflexor and invertor muscles, traits which have been hypothesized to characterize species that perform hindfoot reversal. This finding contrasts with other procyonid hindfoot reversing species, such as Bassariscus astutus, which appear to lack muscular adaptations to hindfoot reversal. Muscle semimembranosus, a muscle that facilitates hind limb suspension, was also enlarged. Uranium is a naturally occurring trace element and radionuclide. Uranium is introduced in the environment during industrial activities and nuclear energy accidents involving nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons tests, ore mining, and manufacturing, which may lead to the contamination of groundwater and soil. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a natural mineral with a high affinity for uranium in water. Groundwater often contains high carbonate concentrations that may affect uranium removal due to the formation of uranyl carbonate complexes. In order to understand the process of uranium removal, uranium adsorptions on three nano-HAPs were conducted under various biogeochemical conditions. Results showed that the fastest U adsorption occurred onto nano-HAP and U adsorption was strongly affected by biogeochemical conditions such as pH and the presence of carbonates, but less affected by temperature. The current study indicates that the presence of carbonates at pH's above the neutral range in groundwater may inhibit U removal with nanohydroxyapatites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (CSID) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a deficiency of the sucrase-isomaltase (SI) enzyme complex within the brush border membrane of the small intestine. Mutations in the SI gene result in abnormal synthesis and/or incorrect transport of the SI enzyme. Patients with CSID generally have reduced sucrase activity, but levels of isomaltase activity range from absent to almost normal. This study sought to better understand the experience of patients with CSID prior to, during, and after their diagnosis and its subsequent treatment with sacrosidase. Methods: This was a cross-sectional interview study conducted in conjunction with a longitudinal, observational study of US patients prescribed and taking sacrosidase for at least three consecutive months as treatment for CSID. The observational study included both children and adults. Results: This qualitative interview study explored the experiences of 43 adult and pediatric patients (n = 8 adults and n = 35 children/adolescents) with CSID pre-, during, and post-diagnosis. Findings suggest that a CSID diagnosis is particularly problematic given the disparate range of more commonly understood gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. After diagnosis and treatment with sacrosidase, participants reported considerable improvement in symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQL), yet symptoms persist that continue to affect daily life, indicating areas of potential unmet need. Conclusion: Educating clinicians about CSID may help improve the overall diagnosis experience. As this research is the first of its kind in CSID, additional research, qualitative and quantitative, will be important to furthering the understanding of HRQL impact and unmet need experienced by this population and identifying ways to best meet those needs. Objectives: New-onset post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a frequent adverse event following major thoracic surgery and is associated with increased risk of perioperative morbidity, length of stay and stroke. It is managed initially with rate and rhythm control therapy; however, optimal duration and the need for anticoagulation are poorly understood. This study aims to assess practice variation regarding POAF management and duration. Methods: This retrospective, single-center cohort study included patients who underwent major thoracic surgery and developed POAF between 2008 and 2017, managed with rate and rhythm control therapy alone. Demographic, clinical, and surgical variables/outcomes, POAF management, and incidence of POAF recurrence in the 30-day post-operative period were collected. Chi-square and T-tests determined significance. Results: Of 2054 patients undergoing thoracic surgery, 155 (75%) patients developed POAF. Different rate and rhythm control agents were used, most commonly metoprolol. 107 (69%) continued rate and rhythm control therapy upon hospital discharge for a mean of 56 days. Among the 48 patients with discontinuation of rate and rhythm control therapy on discharge, none demonstrated recurrence of POAF; in contrast to 3 of 107 patients who continued on therapy. Among patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥ 2, 15% were prescribed anticoagulation on discharge. Conclusions: Use of rate and rhythm control therapy and anticoagulation for POAF is significantly varied in practice. Many patients are not continued on rate and rhythm control after hospital discharge, which does not appear to impact risk of POAF recurrence. Heavy metal pollution in soil and water has been of worldwide concern due to their biotoxicity/ecotoxicity in the ecosystem, accumulation in the food chain, and persistence in the environment. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is known as an efficient and cost-effective biogeochemical process for the remediation of heavy metals in contaminated environment. This study reviews the mechanisms of biomineralization of urease-producing microorganisms and their biogeochemical process with various heavy metals and trace elements. Biogeochemical factors affecting the formation of carbonate biominerals were discussed. These factors included the growth and urease activity of microorganisms, calcium concentration and coexisted cations/anions, dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, redox potential, etc. In addition, the mechanisms of the biomineral morphology and its controlling factors such as medium types, microbial species, and extracellular polymeric substance were analyzed as well. The original notion of dimension for posets was introduced by Dushnik and Miller in 1941 and has been studied extensively in the literature. In 1992, Brightwell and Scheinerman developed the notion of fractional dimension as the natural linear programming relaxation of the Dushnik-Miller concept. In 2016, Ueckerdt introduced the concept of local dimension, and in just three years, several research papers studying this new parameter have been published. In this paper, we introduce and study fractional local dimension. As suggested by the terminology, our parameter is a common generalization of fractional dimension and local dimension. For a pair (n, d) with 2 ≤ d < n, we consider the poset P(1, d; n) consisting of all 1-element and d-element subsets of { 1 , ... , n } partially ordered by inclusion. This poset has fractional dimension d + 1, but for fixed d ≥ 2, its local dimension goes to infinity with n. On the other hand, we show that as n tends to infinity, the fractional local dimension of P(1,d; n) tends to a value FLD(d) which we will be able to determine exactly. For all d ≥ 2, FLD(d) is strictly less than d + 1, and for large d, FLD (d) ∼ d / (log d − log log d − o (1)) . As an immediate corollary, we show that if P is a poset, and d is the maximum degree of a vertex in the comparability graph of P, then the fractional local dimension of P, is at most 2 + FLD(d). Four turtle taxa are previously documented from the Cenomanian Arlington Archosaur Site (AAS) of the Lewisville Formation (Woodbine Group) in Texas. Herein, we describe a new side-necked turtle (Pleurodira), Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov., which is a basal member of the Bothremydidae. Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov. shares synapomorphic characters with other bothremydids, including shared traits with Kurmademydini and Cearachelyini, but has a unique combination of skull and shell traits. The new taxon is significant because it is the oldest crown pleurodiran turtle from North America and Laurasia, predating bothremynines Algorachelus peregrinus and Paiutemys tibert from Europe and North America respectively. This discovery also documents the oldest evidence of dispersal of crown Pleurodira from Gondwana to Laurasia. Pleurochayah appalachius gen. et sp. nov. is compared to previously described fossil pleurodires, placed in a modified phylogenetic analysis of pelomedusoid turtles, and discussed in the context of pleurodiran distribution in the mid-Cretaceous. Congenital aortic valve stenosis (CAVS) affects up to 10% of the world population without medical therapies to treat the disease. New molecular targets are continually being sought that can halt CAVS progression. Collagen deregulation is a hallmark of CAVS yet remains mostly undefined. Here, histological studies were paired with high resolution accurate mass (HRAM) collagen-targeting proteomics to investigate collagen fiber production with collagen regulation associated with human AV development and pediatric end-stage CAVS (pCAVS). Histological studies identified collagen fiber realignment and unique regions of high-density collagen in pCAVS. Proteomic analysis reported specific collagen peptides are modified by hydroxylated prolines (HYP), a post-translational modification critical to stabilizing the collagen triple helix. Quantitative data analysis reported significant regulation of collagen HYP sites across patient categories. Non-collagen type ECM proteins identified (26 of the 44 total proteins) have direct interactions in collagen synthesis, regulation, or modification. Network analysis identified BAMBI (BMP and Activin Membrane Bound Inhibitor) as a potential upstream regulator of the collagen interactome. This is the first study to detail the collagen types and HYP modifications associated with human AV development and pCAVS. We anticipate that this study will inform new therapeutic avenues that inhibit valvular degradation in pCAVS and engineered options for valve replacement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Planar posets can have arbitrarily large dimension. However, a planar poset of height h has dimension at most 192h + 96, while a planar poset with t minimal elements has dimension at most 2t + 1. In particular, a planar poset with a unique minimal element has dimension at most 3. The original notion of dimension for posets is due to Dushnik and Miller and has been studied extensively in the literature. Quite recently, there has been considerable interest in two variations of dimension known as Boolean dimension and local dimension. For a poset P, the Boolean dimension of P and the local dimension of P are both bounded from above by the dimension of P and can be considerably less. Our primary goal will be to study analogies and contrasts among these three parameters. As one example, it is known that the dimension of a poset is bounded as a function of its height and the tree-width of its cover graph. The Boolean dimension of a poset is bounded in terms of the tree-width of its cover graph, independent of its height. We show that the local dimension of a poset cannot be bounded in terms of the tree-width of its cover graph, independent of height. We also prove that the local dimension of a poset is bounded in terms of the path-width of its cover graph. In several of our results, Ramsey theoretic methods will be applied. Circumscapular pain is a frequent complaint in clinical practice. The dorsal scapular and long thoracic nerves course through the neck, where they may become entrapped between or within adjacent scalene muscles. Additionally, a high frequency of brachial plexus "piercing" variants have recently been documented, and it is unclear how they influence branching patterns distally along the brachial plexus. In the project reported here we strived to identify and quantify variations in dorsal scapular nerve and long thoracic nerve secondary to brachial plexus piercing variation. Ninety brachial plexuses from human cadavers (45 female/45 male) were evaluated to identify nerve branching patterns, specifically piercing versus non-piercing variants in the brachial plexus roots and nerves. Anatomical entrapment of the dorsal scapular nerve and long thoracic nerve was found in high frequencies (60.8% and 44.6%, respectively). Anomalous brachial plexus piercing variants were associated with higher frequencies of distal nerve branches also coursing through the scalene musculature, and there was a statistically significant correlation between brachial plexus and long thoracic nerve piercings (p = 0.027). Anatomical entrapment of nerves within scalene musculature is common and may be causative factors for idiopathic circumscapular pain, dorsalgia, and dysfunction of scapulohumeral rhythm. This study revealed a link between anatomical arrangement of the brachial plexus and occurrence of long thoracic nerve entrapment, which may lead to a series of cascading neurologic effects in which affected individuals may suffer from increased incidence of thoracic outlet syndrome and long thoracic nerve entrapment resulting in additional symptoms of interscapular pain and compromised shoulder mobility. There is a natural way to associate with a poset P a hypergraph , called the hypergraph of critical pairs, so that the dimension of P is exactly equal to the chromatic number of. The edges of have variable sizes, but it is of interest to consider the graph G formed by the edges of that have size 2. The chromatic number of G is less than or equal to the dimension of P and the difference between the two values can be arbitrarily large. Nevertheless, there are important instances where the two parameters are the same, and we study one of these in this paper. Our focus is on a family { S n k : n ≥ 3 , k ≥ 0 } of height two posets called crowns. We show that the chromatic number of the graph G n k of critical pairs of the crown S n k is the same as the dimension of S n k , which is known to be ⌈2(n + k)/(k + 2)⌉. In fact, this theorem follows as an immediate corollary to the stronger result: The independence number of G n k is (k + 1)(k + 2)/2. We obtain this theorem as part of a comprehensive analysis of independent sets in G n k including the determination of the second largest size among the maximal independent sets, both the reversible and non-reversible types. Background The patient transition from a hospital to a post-discharge healthcare setting has potential to disrupt continuity of medication management and increase the risk of harm. "Connect with Pharmacy" is a new electronic web-based transfer of care initiative employed by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This allows the sharing of discharge information between the hospital and a patient's chosen community pharmacy. Objective We investigated whether the timely sharing of discharge information with community pharmacies via "Connect with Pharmacy" reduced hospital readmission rates in older patients. Method To evaluate intervention efficacy, hospital admission data was retrospectively collected. For primary analysis, admission rates were tracked 6-months prior (baseline) and 6-months post-intervention. Secondary measures included effect on total length of stay if readmitted, emergency department attendance and duration, and impact of polypharmacy. Main outcome measure The rate of non-elective hospital readmissions, 6-months post-intervention. Results In the sample (n = 627 patients; Mean age = 81 years), emergency readmission rates following the intervention (M = 1.1, 95% CI [0.98, 1.22]) reduced by 16.16% relative to baseline (M = 1.31, 95% CI [1.21, 1.42]) (W = 54,725; p < 0.001). There was no reduction in total length of stay. Subsidiary analysis revealed a post-intervention reduction in number of days spent in hospital lasting more than three days (χ2 = 13.37, df = 1, p < 0 .001). There were no statistically reliable differences in the remaining secondary measures. Conclusion The results showed a reduction in readmissions and potential post-intervention length of stay, indicating there may be further benefits for our older patients' experiences and hospital flow. Objectives To identify risk factors associated with urban postpartum emergency department utilization. Methods This case–control study included 100 matched pairs of postpartum women who had delivered at a large, integrated urban medical system in Bronx, New York, in 2012–2013, with the cases having had an emergency department visit within 42 days of delivery. The cases, identified utilizing administrative and billing data, were matched 1:1 with controls by labor unit, delivery mode and date, excluding nonviable pregnancies. The controls did not have a known postpartum emergency department visit. Variables were abstracted from administrative data and chart review, and included demographics, antenatal/intrapartum/postpartum complications and neonatal intensive care unit admission. Factors associated with puerperal emergency department use were identified via univariate and multivariable analyses. Results Following conditional logistic regression, primiparity [54% vs. 32%, aOR 5.91, 95% CI 2.34–14.91], public insurance [70% vs. 56%, aOR 4.22, 95% CI 1.60–11.12], weekend delivery [30% vs. 26%, aOR 7.61, 95% CI 1.15–52.43] and delivery-related complications [47% vs. 28%, aOR 2.95, 95% CI 1.16–7.51] were associated with an increased risk of postpartum emergency department use, while women of younger ages (17–24 years old) were less likely to have postpartum emergency department use [aOR 0.23, 95% CI 0.07–0.74]. Univariate analysis of individual events within the composite variables showed an association between gestational hypertension/pre-eclampsia and postpartum emergency department use [28% vs. 13% OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.26–5.39]. Psychiatric history, social instability, preterm delivery/neonatal intensive care unit admission, pre-existing medical/antepartum conditions and prolonged postpartum stay were not associated. Conclusions for Practice Delivery-related complications, delivery timing, and certain sociodemographic factors are identifiable risk factors for increased postpartum emergency department utilization. These may be targeted for development of interventions improving puerperal care and potentially preventing emergency department visits, which are costly to the health system and disruptive to the lives of women and their families. Hispanic immigrant communities across the U.S. experience persistent health disparities and barriers to primary care. We examined whether community-based participatory research (CBPR) and geospatial modeling could systematically and reproducibly pinpoint neighborhoods in Charlotte, North Carolina with large proportions of Hispanic immigrants who were at-risk for poor health outcomes and health disparities. Using a CBPR framework, we identified 21 social determinants of health measures and developed a geospatial model from a subset of those measures to identify neighborhoods with large proportions of Hispanic immigrant populations at risk for poor health outcomes. The geospatial model included four measures-poverty, English ability, acculturation and violent crime-which comprised our Hispanic Health Risk Index (HHRI). We developed a Primary Care Barrier Index (PCBI) to determine (1) how well the HHRI correlated with a statistically derived composite measure incorporating all 21 measures identified through the CBPR process as being associated with access to primary care; (2) whether the HHRI predicted primary care access as well as the statistically-derived composite measure in a statistical model; and (3) whether the HHRI identified similar neighborhoods as the statistically derived composite measure. We collapsed 17 of the 21 social determinants using principal components analysis to develop the PCBI. We determined the correlation of each index with inappropriate emergency department (ED) visits, a proxy for primary care access, using logistic generalized estimating equations. Results from logistic regression models showed positive associations of both the HHRI and the PCBI with the use of the ED for primary care treatable conditions. Enhanced by the knowledge of the local community, the CBPR process with geospatial modeling can guide the multi-tiered validation of social determinants of health and identify neighborhoods that are at-risk for poor health outcomes and health disparities. Biochars have been proposed for remediation of metal-contaminated water due to their low cost, high surface area and high sorption capacity for metals. However, there is a lack of understanding over how feedstock material and pyrolysis conditions contribute to the metal sorption capacity of biochar. We produced biochars from 10 different organic materials by pyrolysing at 450 °C and a further 10 biochars from cedar wood by pyrolysing at 50 °C intervals (250-700 °C). Batch sorption experiments were conducted to derive the maximum Cu and Zn sorption capacity of each biochar. The results revealed an exponential relationship between Cu and Zn sorption capacity and the feedstock C/N ratio and a sigmoidal relationship between the pyrolysis temperature and the maximum Cu and Zn sorption capacity. FTIR analysis revealed that as temperature increased, the abundance of functional groups reduced. We conclude that the high sorption capacity of high temperature biochars is due to an electrostatic attraction between positively charged Cu and Zn ions and delocalised pi-electrons on the greater surface area of these biochars. These findings demonstrate a method for predicting the maximum sorption capacity of a biochar based on the feedstock C/N ratio and the pyrolysis temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Claes et al. recently documented and described the anterolateral ligament (ALL) of the knee, demonstrating its existence in 97% of their samples. Here, we further examined the anatomy of this ligament, documented its morphological variation, and assessed the feasibility of its dissection in preserved cadaveric specimens. To achieve this, we dissected 53 preserved cadaveric knees and documented their morphological variation in the anterolateral ligament. The originally described dissection technique for identifying and following the ALL requires flexion of the knee, a state which is often not possible in stiff, preserved cadavers. Here, we describe and confirm the feasibility of an alternate dissection technique in which the quadriceps femoris tendon is incised, for use on specimens in which flexion of the undissected knee is not possible. We also identify a novel technique for assessing whether the anterolateral ligament is absent from a specimen or has simply been obliterated or overlooked, using the lateral inferior genicular vasculature. These dissection techniques have great potential for the dissection of preserved cadavers used in gross anatomy laboratories, and we discuss the applications of such an approach in student-led dissections. Our dissections also uncovered noticeable variation in the anterolateral ligament course and position. Most notably, it often inserts significantly more laterally than the classical presentation (30.2%), or originates more proximally with superficial fibers extending superiorly and laterally over the distal femur (7.5%). Analyses of fluted point technology and Paleoindian technological risk have contributed to our understanding of human adaptation across North America in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. However, poor chronological control has dissuaded similar studies of fluted points found in Alaska and northern Yukon and our understanding of their adaptive role in early arctic adaptations remains unclear. Two new archeological sites have provided reliable radiocarbon data and for the first time, a comprehensive analysis of northern fluted points is possible. Here, technological and morphological analyses of northern fluted points are presented, including variables statistically evaluated and compared to a collection of fluted Folsom artifacts serving as a reference. Variation in tool shape was measured using geometric morphometrics, and a new approach to landmark placement designed to characterize basal morphology and allow the analysis to include tool fragments is presented. Results confirm that northern fluted points represent a cohesive technological strategy and are used to formulate hypotheses suggesting its service as a risk-management system promoting ease-of-replacement-after-failure to offset transport costs and reduce risk during long-distance travel. Community receptivity, a critical component in integration processes, is a place's collective response to newcomers. It is a constructed context in which the experiences of settlement and adjustment for both immigrants and non-immigrants occur. Receptivity is fluid, shaped by multi-scalar components of a community's political, economic, social, and cultural spheres. In traditional gateways, the evolving interplay of long-established forces guides receptivity. But in new gateways, front line providers that encounter the initial settlement needs of immigrants are the vanguard of constructing the broader community's warmth of immigrant welcome. This case study of three elementary schools in Charlotte, NC demonstrates the role of public schools as a site of receptivity's early construction within an emerging gateway. We argue that teachers are creating receptivity building blocks within their classrooms, guiding the construction of receptivity within their schools, among the school board, the school district, and the city as a whole. The lesser grison ( Galictis cuja) and the red panda ( Ailurus fulgens) represent two opposed morpho-functional musteloid extremes. The mid-sized lesser grison is primarily terrestrial, a frequent burrow-dweller, and carnivorous, while the larger, scansorial red panda eats bamboo. This study documents the axial myology of these species, including muscle descriptions, weights, and optimizations. Muscle maps are also provided for the lesser grison, representing the first axial maps for a wild-caught carnivoran. The functional analyses revealed that G. cuja, contrary to A. fulgens, possesses longer, stronger, and subdivided neck muscles. It also possesses a thoraco-lumbar iliocostalis system that is more developed than the longissimus complex, and numerous, robust, and laterally inserted deep bellies of the cervical and thoracic transversospinalis systems. These specializations allow powerful neck movement during hunting and transport of heavy prey as well as axial flexibility, facilitating bounding gaits and lateral movements while navigating subterranean galleries. Some myological traits of the red panda differ from those expected in a highly herbivorous taxon (e.g., m. sternocephalicus, m. masseter), and may reflect its depredatory ancestry. The optimization analysis revealed phylogenetically informative traits across Carnivora, including the absence of m. longissimus capitis in Mephitidae, the absence of spinous thoracic origins for m. biventer cervicis in Musteloidea, and the presence of a relatively lateral insertion of m. rectus dorsalis capitis intermedius in the clade Ictonychinae+Lutrinae+Mustelinae. Past research documents the extent that discrimination experiences and observations can undermine people's health and performance. In addition to discrimination's direct consequence for targets, discrimination implicates the morality of the larger community where it occurs. Perceptions of community morality could predict community identification that, in turn, could predict health and performance. To test this serial mediation hypothesis, 615 second- and third-year university undergraduates reported the frequency of discrimination observations and experiences. Students' perceptions of the university community's morality mediated the relationship between discrimination and the extent that they identified with the university. In turn, university identification mediated the relationship between university morality and students' academic engagement and mental health. However, only university morality reliably mediated the relationship between discrimination and physical health. Purpose: This prospective study aimed to investigate macular structural characteristics in children with Down syndrome compared to those in healthy children. Methods: Two groups of children (aged 6-16 years) were enrolled: children with Down syndrome (Down syndrome group, N = 17) and age-matched healthy children who were full-term at birth (control group, N = 18). Eligible patients had visual acuity of 20/100 or better and gestational age at birth of ≥ 36 weeks. Fourier domain optical coherence tomography was used for imaging of the macular retinal structure, and retinal volume scans centered on the macula were obtained. Central subfield thickness (CST) and the thickness of the inner and outer retinal layer regions were analyzed using the instrument's segmentation software. The analysis of data is provided for the right eye only, since there was no significant difference between right and left eyes for either the Down syndrome or control groups. Results: Children in the Down syndrome group generally had identifiable retinal structure. The CST for the full retina and inner and outer retinal layers were all significantly greater in the Down syndrome group than the control group (independent t test, all p < 0.05). Despite the significantly thicker macula, only about 29 % (5 of 17) of the right eyes of patients with Down syndrome had macular thickness outside the normal range. Visual acuity in the Down syndrome group was not directly correlated with increased CST ( t = 1.288, r = 0.326, p = 0.202). The focus of this special issue is relative deprivation (RD): the judgment that one or one's group is worse off compared to some standard accompanied by feelings of anger and resentment. This collection of seven papers demonstrates the range of the new thinking and research about RD, and they include data from an impressive variety of participants-including Canadians (both French- and English-speakers), Dutch, the Maoris of New Zealand, Mongols, Singaporeans, and South Africans (both Blacks and Whites). These seven papers show that if RD, and its counterpart, relative gratification, are defined carefully, at the right level of analysis and employed within larger theoretical models, the concept offers invaluable insight to how people respond to often dramatic changes in their objective circumstances. Our aim was to review the use of high-dimensional biology techniques, specifically transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, in amniotic fluid to elucidate the mechanisms behind preterm birth or assessment of fetal development. We performed a comprehensive MEDLINE literature search on the use of transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic technologies for amniotic fluid analysis. All abstracts were reviewed for pertinence to preterm birth or fetal maturation in human subjects. Nineteen articles qualified for inclusion. Most articles described the discovery of biomarker candidates, but few larger, multicenter replication or validation studies have been done. We conclude that the use of high-dimensional systems biology techniques to analyze amniotic fluid has significant potential to elucidate the mechanisms of preterm birth and fetal maturation. However, further multicenter collaborative efforts are needed to replicate and validate candidate biomarkers before they can become useful tools for clinical practice. The article presents a study on the development of relative importance values as contribution weights for evaluating the human wellbeing. The study was done by developing the domains and elements of human wellbeing with the use of qualitative data based on professional opinion (OP) and public perception (PP). The study reveals that several factors including safety, security, and living standards have the most influence on human wellbeing.

Roughly one third of children subjected to abusive environments grow into healthy and capable adults, demonstrating remarkable resiliency, despite risks for developing maladaptive self-structures and destructive behaviors (Werner, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry 59:72-81 ; Kendall-Tackett et al., Psychological Bulletin 113:164-180 ). This paper suggests that, for adults with developmental arrests due to childhood traumas, it may be beneficial to approach enhancing resilience through interventions meant to foster resiliency factors in adolescents and children, tailored appropriately for an adult. Peak force (PF), contractile rate of force development (RFD) and contractile impulse (CI) are of great importance to competitive weightlifters (WL). These athletes routinely perform successive bouts of high-intensity resistance exercise (HIRE) within the same day (double-day training) with the aim of improving muscular function and weightlifting performance. The purpose of this investigation was to determine and compare the PF, contractile RFD and CI responses to double-day training between WL and resistance trained (RT) adults ( n = 16 per group). Furthermore, we sought to establish whether acute changes in muscle function were associated with acute changes in muscle architecture. Isometric front squat PF, contractile RFD, CI and the pennation angle (θ), anatomical and physiological thickness of the m . vastus lateralis (VL) were determined before and after two equivalent HIRE sessions separated by 4-6 h rest. Each session consisted of ten single repetitions of the dynamic barbell front squat interspersed with 2-min rest, using a load equivalent to 90% of the pre-session PF. Weightlifters demonstrated greater PF at all time points when compared to RT adults and exhibited no significant within or between session changes in PF, contractile RFD or CI. Conversely, RT adults demonstrated within- and between-session decreases in PF and between-session increases in contractile RFD and CI. As no correlations were found between the relative within-session changes in muscle function and the concomitant changes in muscle architecture, other factors must contribute to the divergent responses in PF, contractile RFD and CI between WL and RT adults. Weightlifting is a dynamic strength and power sport in which two, multi- joint, whole-body lifts are performed in competition; the snatch and clean and jerk. During the performance of these lifts, weightlifters have achieved some of the highest absolute and relative peak power outputs reported in the literature. The training structure of competitive weightlifters is characterized by the frequent use of high-intensity resistance exercise movements. Varied coaching and training philosophies currently exist around the world and further research is required to substantiate the best type of training programme for male and female weightlifters of various age groups. As competitive weightlifting is contested over eight male and seven female body weight categories, the anthropometric characteristics of the athletes widely ranges. The body compositions of weightlifters are similar to that of athletes of comparable body mass in other strength and power sports. However, the shorter height and limb lengths of weightlifters provide mechanical advantages when lifting heavy loads by reducing the mechanical torque and the vertical distance that the barbell must be displaced. Furthermore, the shorter body dimensions coincide with a greater mean skeletal muscle cross-sectional area that is advantageous to weightlifting performance. Weightlifting training induces a high metabolic cost. Although dietary records demonstrate that weightlifters typically meet their required daily energy intake, weightlifters have been shown to over consume protein and fat at the expense of adequate carbohydrate. The resulting macronutrient imbalance may not yield optimal performance gains. Cross-sectional data suggest that weightlifting training induces type IIX to IIA fibre-type transformation. Furthermore, weightlifters exhibit hypertrophy of type II fibres that is advantageous to weightlifting performance and maximal force production. As such, the isometric peak force and contractile rate of force development of weightlifters is ∼15-20% and ∼13-16% greater, respectively, than in other strength and power athletes. In addition, weightlifting training has been shown to reduce the typical sex-related difference in the expression of neuromuscular strength and power. However, this apparent sex-related difference appears to be augmented with increasing adult age demonstrating that women undergo a greater age-related decline in muscle shortening velocity and peak power when compared with men. Weightlifting training and competition has been shown to induce significant structural and functional adaptations of the cardiovascular system. The collective evidence shows that these adaptations are physiological as opposed to pathological. Finally, the acute exercise-induced testosterone, cortisol and growth hormone responses of weightlifters have similarities to that of following conventional strength and hypertrophy protocols involving large muscle mass exercises. The routine assessment of the basal testosterone : cortisol ratio may be beneficial when attempting to quantify the adaptive responses to weightlifting training. As competitive weightlifting is becoming increasingly popular around the world, further research addressing the physiological responses and adaptations of female weightlifters and younger (i.e. ≤17 years of age) and older (i.e. ≤35 years of age) weightlifters of both sexes is required. Tonic receptors convey stimulus duration and intensity and are implicated in homeostatic control. However, how tonic homeostatic signals are generated and how they reconfigure neural circuits and modify animal behavior is poorly understood. Here we show that Caenorhabditis elegans O2-sensing neurons are tonic receptors that continuously signal ambient [O2] to set the animal's behavioral state. Sustained signaling relied on a Ca2+ relay involving L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, the ryanodine and the inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors. Tonic activity evoked continuous neuropeptide release, which helps elicit the enduring behavioral state associated with high [O2]. Sustained O2 receptor signaling was propagated to downstream neural circuits, including the hub interneuron RMG. O2 receptors evoked similar locomotory states at particular O2 concentrations, regardless of previous d[O2]/dt. However, a phasic component of the URX receptors' response to high d[O2]/dt, as well as tonic-to-phasic transformations in downstream interneurons, enabled transient reorientation movements shaped by d[O2]/dt. The passage of the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children in 2000 marked the first global effort to address human trafficking in 50 years. Since the passage of the UN Protocol international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and individual states have devoted significant resources to eliminating human trafficking. This article critically examines the impact of these efforts with reference to the trends, political, and empirical challenges in data collection and the limitations of international law. I argue that current international law disproportionately addresses the criminal prosecution of traffickers at the expense of trafficking victims' human rights, and has therefore not yet reached its full potential in the fight against human sex trafficking. ING proteins interact with core histones through their plant homeodomains (PHDs) and with histone acetyltransferase (HAT) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) complexes to alter chromatin structure. Here we identify a lamin interaction domain (LID) found only in ING proteins, through which they bind to and colocalize with lamin A. Lamin knockout (LMNA−/−) cells show reduced levels of ING1 that mislocalize. Ectopic lamin A expression increases ING1 levels and re-targets it to the nucleus to act as an epigenetic regulator. ING1 lacking the LID does not interact with lamin A or affect apoptosis. In LMNA−/− cells, apoptosis is not affected by ING1. Mutation of lamin A results in several laminopathies, including Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS), a severe premature ageing disorder. HGPS cells have reduced ING1 levels that mislocalize. Expression of LID peptides to block lamin A–ING1 interaction induces phenotypes reminiscent of laminopathies including HGPS. These data show that targeting of ING1 to the nucleus by lamin A maintains ING1 levels and biological function. Known roles for ING proteins in regulating apoptosis and chromatin structure indicate that loss of lamin A–ING interaction may be an effector of lamin A loss, contributing to the HGPS phenotype. In three experiments, female participants were primed to think of themselves as female university students or unique individuals. We predicted that group-primed participants would find reading about the sexual harassment of a female student threatening to their self-concepts. However, if these participants could affirm an important value, the threat to their personal self-esteem might be resolved. Group-primed participants who wrote about an important individual value reported higher personal self-esteem in comparison with group-primed participants who did not. However, when group-primed participants wrote about a value important to their group, they did not report higher personal self-esteem in comparison to group-primed participants who lacked this opportunity. The results suggest that group-primed participants who affirmed an important individual value reported higher personal self-esteem because it allowed them to re-categorize themselves as unique individuals who were different from the female victim. The seven mammalian isotypes of beta tubulin are strikingly similar in amino acid sequence. The differences in isotypic sequence, although small, are nonetheless conserved in evolution, which suggests that they may confer distinct functional roles. If so, such roles should be reflected in the selective expression of isotypes by cell type, or even in the sorting of isotypes to within-cell pools. Hair cells of the vestibular sensory epithelia each possess a kinocilium, a microtubule-based organelle that could represent a distinct microtubule compartment, separate from the extensive microtubule network in the soma. The afferent neurons that innervate the vestibular sensory epithelia may also be functionally divided into dendritic, somatic, and axonal compartments, each with its own complement of microtubules. We have examined the distribution of beta tubulin isotypes in gerbil vestibular epithelia using isotype-specific antibodies to four isotypes and indirect immunofluorescence. We found that hair cells selectively express betaI and betaIV tubulin, while supporting cells express betaI, betaII, and betaIV tubulin. However, no sorting of isotypes between somatic and kinocilia compartments was found in hair cells. Vestibular ganglion cells display three isotypes in the soma, axon, and terminal dendrite compartments (betaI, betaII, and betaIII tubulin), but only betaIII tubulin was found in calyceal nerve endings. : ObjectiveThe natural history of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in patients with normal liver biochemistry remains poorly characterized. We performed a retrospective review of patients with chronic HCV infection and persistently normal ALT to compare clinical and histological features with those in patients with abnormal liver biochemistry.: MethodsNinety-one HCV RNA-positive patients with persistently normal ALT who had a liver biopsy between 1993 and 1999 were identified. Clinical, histological, and epidemiological features in this group were compared with those found in 94 patients with abnormal ALT. Biopsies were assessed using Ishak’s scoring system and fibrosis progression rate calculated from the likely time of infection.: ResultsAlthough overall necroinflammatory score and fibrosis were significantly lower in those with normal ALT, none had normal liver histology, and 15 (16%) patients with normal ALT were found to have significant necroinflammation with a score of 5 or greater and/or significant fibrosis staged at 3 or 4. No clinical, epidemiological, or virological predictors of severe histological disease were found.: ConclusionsOne in six patients with HCV infection and persistently normal ALT will have evidence of significant, progressive liver disease that can only be identified on liver biopsy. There are seven isotypic forms of the microtubule protein β tubulin in mammals, but not all isotypes are synthesized in every cell type. In the adult organ of Corti, each of the five major cell types synthesizes a different subset of isotypes. Inner hair cells synthesize only βI and βII tubulin, while outer hair cells make βI and βIV tubulin. Only βII and βIV tubulin are found in inner and outer pillar cells, while βI, βII, and βIV tubulin are present in Deiters cells, and βI, βII and βIII tubulin are found in organ of Corti dendrites. During post-natal organ of Corti development in the gerbil, microtubules are elaborated in an orderly temporal sequence beginning with hair cells, followed by pillar cells and Deiters cells. Using β tubulin isotype-specific antibodies, we show that, in the gerbil cochlea, the same three isotypes are present in each cell type at birth, and that a cell type-specific reduction in the isotypes synthesized occurs in hair cells and pillar cells at an unusually late stage in development. No β tubulin isotypes were detected in mature afferent dendrites, but we show that this is because few microtubules are present in mature dendrites. In addition, we show that primary cilia in inner hair cells, a feature of early development, persist much later than previously reported.
