Organisms face the fundamental ecological question of when to switch resources from growth to reproduction or allocate resources between the two. Social wasps, including Vespula species (the yellowjackets), must crucially decide to transition from colony growth to reproductive production before the onset of winter. The timing of this transition could be influenced by worker numbers and environmental factors that affect the fitness of the colony. Early initiation of reproductive production has the advantage that a few reproductives can emerge if the colony collapses prematurely. In contrast, once reproductive production begins, nest growth terminates and the increase of future reproductives should be limited. This study investigated the group decision-making process regarding when and under what circumstances Vespula shidai initiates its reproductive phase. During the early reproductive period, we estimated the number of workers and new queens that emerged from the meconia in the cells. Significantly, a positive correlation was observed between the number of workers and the production of new queens during the early reproductive period. To examine the benefits of early reproduction, we reared V. shidai colonies in a plastic greenhouse, allowed males and new queens to fly and mate freely, and allowed the queens to begin overwintering at their timing. In our experimental environment, new queens that emerged earlier in the reproductive period had a higher survival rate during overwintering and higher dry and fat weights in the following spring. Cooperative breeding of animals is vulnerable to social parasitism, in which parasites usurp the labors of the hosts. In social hymenopterans, social parasitism has evolved numerous times independently, and the process by which it has arisen is thus a major question in evolutionary biology. It is generally thought that parasites originate from their hosts via sympatric speciation, and some actual examples have been reported. On the other hand, an alternative hypothesis that allopatric speciation first occurred, and then one species subsequently evolved as the parasite of its sister species has been theoretically supported, but no actual cases have yet been reported. Here, we report that our observations suggest facultative, temporary, and mutual social parasitism that occurs in both an intra- and interspecific manner in two sister species of yellow jackets, Vespula flaviceps and V. shidai, in Japan. Considering their parapatric distribution, social structure, and parasitic behaviors, social parasitism between these two species does not follow the conventional sympatric speciation hypothesis (intraspecific hypothesis), but possibly supports the social deception hypothesis (interspecific hypothesis). This questionnaire survey was conducted at 11 hospitals in Japan to determine vaccination coverage against seasonal influenza and the prevalence rate of influenza among pregnant Japanese women. Of 2,808 postpartum women who gave birth at the 11 hospitals during the study period from March 1, 2014, to July 31, 2014, 1,713 (61 %) participated in this study and 876 (51 %) reported having received vaccination against influenza in or after October 2013. Women aged <25 years had a significantly lower vaccination rate than those aged ≥25 years (31 % vs. 53 %, respectively; p = 0.0000). Eighty-seven (5.1 %) and 1,626 (94.9 %) women did and did not contract influenza, respectively. Although prior birth did not affect overall vaccination coverage (50 % for primiparous vs. 53 % for multiparous), multiparous women had a significantly higher rate of contracting influenza than primiparous women, irrespective of vaccination status (5.6 % vs. 2.2 % [ p = 0.0216] and 9.7 % vs. 3.5 % [ p = 0.0003] for women with and without vaccination, respectively). The 2013-2014 vaccination program significantly reduced the influenza infection rate by 35 % (3.9 % vs. 6.3 % for women with and without vaccination, respectively; p = 0.0272). Seventy-two (83 %) of the 87 women took antiviral agents for the treatment of influenza and two (2.3 %) required hospitalization. These results suggested that pregnant Japanese women had a high level of concern regarding seasonal influenza. However, campaigns targeting young pregnant Japanese women, as well as multiparous women, for vaccination are needed in order to further reduce the incidence of influenza among pregnant Japanese women. Genetic variations in cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) contribute to interindividual variability in the metabolism of therapeutic agents such as clopidogrel. Polymorphisms in CYP2C19 are associated with large interindividual variations in the therapeutic efficacy of clopidogrel. This study evaluated the in vitro oxidation of clopidogrel by 21 CYP2C19 variants harboring amino acid substitutions. These CYP2C19 variants were heterologously expressed in COS-7 cells, and the kinetic parameters of clopidogrel 2-oxidation were estimated. Among the 21 CYP2C19 variants, 12 (that is, CYP2C19.5A, CYP2C19.5B, CYP2C19.6, CYP2C19.8, CYP2C19.9, CYP2C19.10, CYP2C19.14, CYP2C19.16, CYP2C19.19, CYP2C19.22, CYP2C19.24 and CYP2C19.25) showed no or markedly low activity compared with the wild-type protein CYP2C19.1B. This comprehensive in vitro assessment provided insights into the specific metabolic activities of CYP2C19 proteins encoded by variant alleles, and this may to be valuable when interpreting the results of in vivo studies. Background: The Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 signalling pathway has been shown to have oncogenic effects in vitro and in vivo. To demonstrate the role of TLR4 signalling in colon tumourigenesis, we examined the expression of TLR4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) in colorectal cancer (CRC).Methods: The expression of TLR4 and MyD88 in 108 CRC samples, 15 adenomas, and 15 normal mucosae was evaluated by immunohistochemistry, and the correlations between their immunoscores and clinicopathological variables, including disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), were analysed.Results: Compared with normal mucosae and adenomas, 20% cancers displayed high expression of TLR4, and 23% cancers showed high expression of MyD88. The high expression of TLR4 and MyD88 was significantly correlated with liver metastasis (P=0.0001, P=0.0054). In univariate analysis, the high expression of TLR4 was significantly associated with shorter OS (hazard ratio (HR): 2.17; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.15-4.07; P=0.015). The high expression of MyD88 expression was significantly associated with poor DFS and OS (HR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.31-4.13; P=0.0038 and HR: 3.03; 95% CI: 1.67-5.48; P=0.0002). The high combined expression of TLR4 and MyD88 was also significantly associated with poor DFS and OS (HR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.27-3.99; P=0.0053 and HR: 2.97; 95% CI: 1.64-5.38; P=0.0003). Multivariate analysis showed that high expressions of TLR4 (OS: adjusted HR: 1.88; 95% CI: 0.99-3.55; P=0.0298) and MyD88 (DFS: adjusted HR: 1.93; 95% CI: 1.01-3.67; P=0.0441; OS: adjusted HR: 2.25; 95% CI: 1.17-4.33; P=0.0112) were independent prognostic factors of OS. Furthermore, high co-expression of TLR4/MyD88 was strongly associated with both poor DFS and OS.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that high expression of TLR4 and MyD88 is associated with liver metastasis and is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in patients with CRC. This study explores the effect of priming rhesus monkeys with an Ad5/35 vector expressing simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) gag and gp120, and then boosting the animals with an modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) vector encoding the same antigens after a 2-month interval. The animals were intravenously challenged with 100 TCID50 of highly pathogenic SIVmac239 virus 2 months after the booster vaccination. The priming vaccination induced robust SIV-specific cell-mediated and humoral immune responses, and boosting further enhanced the cellular immunity. Vaccination reduced peak and long-term viral loads by 1–2 logs for a period of >6 months, as reflected by a reduction in both the SIV RNA and DNA levels. Of considerable interest, the immunized monkeys did not suffer from loss of CD4 T cells, particularly central memory CD4 T cells. These results demonstrate that prophylactic vaccination with Ad5/35 followed by MVA reduces viral replication and prevents CD4 T-cell loss, and that these effects may decrease the likelihood of disease progression. Background: This multicentre randomised phase III trial was designed to determine whether adjuvant chemotherapy with gemcitabine improves the outcomes of patients with resected pancreatic cancer.Methods: Eligibility criteria included macroscopically curative resection of invasive ductal carcinoma of the pancreas and no earlier radiation or chemotherapy. Patients were randomly assigned at a 1 : 1 ratio to either the gemcitabine group or the surgery-only group. Patients assigned to the gemcitabine group received gemcitabine at a dose of 1000 mg m(-2) over 30 min on days 1, 8 and 15, every 4 weeks for 3 cycles.Results: Between April 2002 and March 2005, 119 patients were enrolled in this study. Among them, 118 were eligible and analysable (58 in the gemcitabine group and 60 in the surgery-only group). Both groups were well balanced in terms of baseline characteristics. Although heamatological toxicity was frequently observed in the gemcitabine group, most toxicities were transient, and grade 3 or 4 non-heamatological toxicity was rare. Patients in the gemcitabine group showed significantly longer disease-free survival (DFS) than those in the surgery-only group (median DFS, 11.4 versus 5.0 months; hazard ratio=0.60 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.40-0.89); P=0.01), although overall survival did not differ significantly between the gemcitabine and surgery-only groups (median overall survival, 22.3 versus 18.4 months; hazard ratio=0.77 (95% CI: 0.51-1.14); P=0.19).Conclusion: The current results suggest that adjuvant gemcitabine contributes to prolonged DFS in patients undergoing macroscopically curative resection of pancreatic cancer. Increasing attention has been paid to the maternally inherited microbes that are capable of manipulating the reproduction of their hosts for their own benefit. Although several studies have revealed that the host genotype can affect the intensity of the manipulation, the underlying genetic basis is poorly understood. Here, we examined the intensity of spiroplasma-induced male killing in various wild-type stocks of Drosophila melanogaster to clarify the genetic basis of the host factors responsible for the variation in the male-killing intensity. Among ten lines examined by mating experiments (that is, nuclear introgression), eight lines including Oregon-R and Canton-S were found to have nuclear factors that allowed strong expression of male killing. In contrast, the nuclear factors of the lines Sevelen and Hikone partially suppressed or remarkably retarded the expression of male killing. These results were confirmed by artificial transfer experiments of spiroplasma infection across the fly lines by means of microinjection. A series of mating experiments revealed that the nuclear factors acting against male killing were mainly located on autosomes in Sevelen and on the X chromosome in Hikone. In both lines, the suppressors were inferred to act maternally with a dominant effect. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) effectively slows the progression of AIDS. However, drug resistance and/or toxicity can limit the utility of ART in many patients. In this study, we assessed whether a viral vector-based vaccine can be used as a therapeutic vaccine in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected monkeys. The effect of vaccinating SIVmac239-infected rhesus monkeys with an SIV gag and gp120-expressing adenovirus (Ad) vector vaccine and a modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) vaccine was explored while being treated with ART. Rhesus monkeys were intravenously infected with 10 and 1000 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infectious dose) of SIVmac239. Two months after SIV infection, the monkeys received a 4-month treatment with ART. Some of the monkeys were immunized with adenovirus-based vaccine and MVA-based vaccine with 2 months interval during ART. Viral load, CD4 count and SIV-specific immune responses were observed for 7 months after interruption of ART. The vaccinated animals had higher (i) CD4 counts, (ii) SIV-specific cell-mediated immune responses and (iii) anti-SIV-neutralizing antibody (Ab) titers than monkeys treated with ART alone. More importantly, the vaccination significantly reduced the SIV RNA load from animals infected with a low dose of SIV (10 TCID50). The anti-SIV cell-mediated and humoral responses induced by the vaccination was inversely correlated with a reduction in SIV viral load and positively correlated with an increase in CD4+ T cell counts. In the quest for sources of optical radiation in the terahertz domain, promising candidates are nonlinear optical processes occurring when an intense laser beam interacts with a material medium. Besides conventional media (such as crystals), relativistic electrons also show striking nonlinear collective behaviours, which can lead to powerful laser-induced coherent emission, revealing huge potentials of these devices as terahertz sources. However, up to now only broadband emissions were reported, and experimental control of their radiation properties, such as their spectra, remained an important challenge. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of mastering the coherent emission experimentally by producing tunable narrowband terahertz radiation. The interaction is made to occur between an electron beam and laser pulses possessing a longitudinal quasi-sinusoidal modulation, and the narrowband emission occurs in a region of quasi-uniform magnetic field. Aspirin prevents the production of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) by irreversibly inhibiting platelet cyclooxygenase, exhibiting antiplatelet actions. This agent has been reported to prevent relapse in patients with ischemic heart disease or cerebral infarction via this action mechanism. However, there are individual differences in this action, and aspirin is not effective in some patients, which is referred to as ‘aspirin resistance’. In this study, we analyzed laboratory aspirin resistance by platelet aggregation in 110 healthy adult Japanese males using 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of nine genes involved in platelet aggregation/hemorrhage. In the transplant surgery, reactive oxygen species (ROS) from the reperfused tissue cause ischemia-reperfusion injury, resulting in the primary graft failure. We have recently reported that Rho-kinase, an effecter of the small GTPase Rho, plays an important role in the ROS production in the hyperacute phase of reperfusion; however, the sources and mechanisms of the ROS production remain to be elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the source of ROS production with a special reference to Rho-kinase to develop a new strategy against ischemia-reperfusion injury. In an in vivo rat model of liver transplantation, Kupffer cells in the graft were depleted using liposome-encapsulated dichloromethylene diphosphonate to examine the source of ROS production. The effect of adenoviral-mediated overexpression of a dominant-negative Rho-kinase (AdDNRhoK) in hepatocytes in the graft was also examined. Kupffer cells were not involved in the ROS production, whereas the AdDNRhoK transfection to hepatocytes significantly suppressed the ROS production. Furthermore, the ROS production was dose-dependently inhibited by apocynin, an NADPH oxidase inhibitor. Expression of DNRhoK also suppressed the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and ameliorated the lethal liver injury with a significant prolongation of the survival. These results suggest that the Rho-kinase-mediated pathway plays a crucial role in the ROS production through NADPH oxidase in hepatocytes during the hyperacute phase of reperfusion in vivo. Among the attractive coherent light sources resulting from the interaction between femtosecond lasers and relativistic electron beams, simultaneous Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) in the THz region, slicing and UV-VUV Coherent Harmonic Generation (CHG) can be achieved on synchrotron radiation facilities. Recently, a Ti:Sa laser at high repetition rate (1 kHz) has been seeded in the optical klystron of the Free Electron Laser at UVSOR-II (Okazaki, Japan). In this paper, the experimental set-up allowing delivery of sub picosecond UV pulses from CHG, and TeraHertz radiation from CSR is described. We further focus on the third coherent harmonic (266 nm) generated. The expected typical characteristics of this radiation, predicted by both numerical and analytical models recalled here, are experimentally verified and several studies of the influence of the seed laser on the output CHG intensity are reported. Such experiment enables UVSOR-II facility to produce in parallel short pulses at two different colors, synchronized at high repetition rate with one single infrared laser: a unique set-up of great interest for the facility users. Hydrophilic porous Si is prepared by surface modification with polyethylene oxide (PEO) molecules. The surface modification is confirmed by infrared absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The effect of surface modification on the efficiency of photosensitization of oxygen molecules, i.e., the efficiency of singlet oxygen generation, is studied. Objective:This study investigates the effects of a late evening snack (LES), of 200 kcal of rice ball, on energy metabolism in cirrhotic patients. Impaired nutritional metabolism has been associated with cirrhosis, and frequent intake of small meals may prevent early-onset starvation, and maintain nourishment in these patients.Subjects:Twenty-one cirrhotic patients and 26 control subjects (Control) were recruited for this study. Patients were subsequently treated by LES (LC-LES) and by a non-LES regimen (LC-NLES).Method:Resting energy expenditure and respiratory quotient (RQ) were assessed by indirect calorimetry at 0830, 1130 and 1430. Blood glucose and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were measured just before the energy metabolism measurements. The regular diet included three major meals and LES, at 0900, 1200, 1800 and 2100, respectively. The Control and LC-NLES groups received only the major meals, whereas the LC-LES group received three meals plus 200 kcal LES for 7 days. There was no difference in the total energy intake among Control, LC-NLES and LC-LES groups.Results:Respiratory quotient in LC-NLES was significantly lower than that of Control at 0830. Respiratory quotient value in LC-LES significantly elevated from that in LC-NLES. The RQ values did not differ among Control, LC-NLES and LC-LES at 2 h after the meal (1130 and 1430). Background: Little information is available on the relative contribution of peptide growth factors and leukocyte-derived proteinases to the repair processes in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We investigated their possible roles in epithelial cell restitution and proliferation in patients with IBD.Methods: The expression of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), keratinocyte growth factor (KGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and neutrophil elastase (NE) was examined in colonic mucosal tissues. The effects of organ culture supernatants of mucosal tissues on epithelial cell restitution and proliferation were analyzed in vitro using an intestinal cell line, IEC-6 cells.Results: Most organ cultures detected the presence of measurable levels of HGF, with a relative paucity of KGF and TGF-beta activity. Greater levels of HGF were obtained in the mucosa involved with IBD, especially in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). The mucosa involved with UC also showed higher amounts of NE. The supernatants from the mucosa involved with UC possessed a prominent stimulatory effect on the restitution of IEC-6 cells. By contrast, significant suppression beyond baseline levels was observed for the proliferation of IEC-6 cells when they were incubated with recombinant HGF plus the supernatants from the mucosa involved with UC. This suppression was diminished considerably by preincubation of the supernatants with the anti-NE antibody.Conclusions: HGF produced in the intestinal mucosa may be an important stimulator acting on epithelial cell restitution in patients with IBD. We performed a variety of complete total endoscopic general surgical procedures, including colon resection, distal gastrectomy, and splenectomy, successfully with the assistance of the da Vinci computer-enhanced surgical system. The robotic system allowed us to manipulate the endoscopic instruments as effectively as during open surgery. It enhanced visualization of both the operative field and precision of the necessary techniques, as well as being less stressful for the endoscopic operating team. This technological innovation can therefore help surgeons overcome many of the difficulties associated with the endoscopic approach and thus has the potential to enable more precise, safer, and more minimally invasive surgery in the future. Biochemical roles of the representative enzymes involved in carbon metabolism of glucose were investigated in relation to the fruit-body formation of the basidiomycete Flammulina velutipes. Changes in specific activities of the enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and glyoxylate (GLOX) and gluconeogenesis pathways were measured at different stages of development of the fungus. The enzyme activities of malate synthase (MS) and fructose bisphosphatase (FBP) as the key enzymes for the GLOX-gluconeogenesis pathways increased in mycelia during the fruit-body formation. The activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) for the TCA cycle and NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase (GLTDH (NADP)) for glutamate synthesis increased more markedly. Moreover, the mycelial mat of the cultures producing fruit bodies yielded greater enzyme activities of isocitrate lyase (ICL), MS, FBP, and IDH than that of the cultures that did not produce fruit bodies. These results suggest that the GLOX-gluconeogenesis pathways as well as the glutamate synthesis have a strong correlation with the fruit-body formation of F. velutipes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The colour of tattooed skin has been predicted by a Monte Carlo method based on the optical coefficient spectra of the skin and tattoo dyes. Slices of pig skin, a tattoo phantom and skin phantoms with different thickness were prepared, and their reflectance and transmittance spectra were measured using an integrating sphere at wavelengths varying from 400nm to 700nm. The absorption and scattering coefficient spectra of skin phantoms, pig skins and the tattoo phantom were each calculated using the inverse Monte Carlo method. The skin phantoms and pig skins were overlaid on the tattoo phantom, and the reflectance spectra of the two-layered structures were measured. The reflectance spectra of the two-layered structures were calculated from the optical coefficient spectra using the Monte Carlo method. They agreed well with the measured spectra. The colour differences between the calculated and measured spectra were also evaluated by the L*a*b* colour space distances and showed good agreement, with 3.49 for the skin phantoms and 8.27 for the pig skins. S. Maehara Background: No reports exist on the role of laparoscopic hepatectomy in the short- and long-term outcomes of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We present our results from using laparoscopic hepatectomy for HCC and discuss the importance of this procedure. Methods: To investigate the role of laparoscopic hepatectomy in the short- and long-term outcomes, 17 patients with HCC who underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy (laparoscopic hepatectomy group) were compared with 38 patients who underwent conventional open hepatectomy (open hepatectomy group) during the same period. Results: No differences in operation time, blood loss, rate of blood transfusion, or incidence of postoperative complications were found between the two groups. The postoperative hospital stay for the laparoscopic hepatectomy group was significantly shorter than for the open hepatectomy group. With long-term prognosis, no difference was found in survival rate and disease-free survival rate between the two groups. No recurrence was found in the stump of the remaining liver after laparoscopic hepatectomy. Conclusions: Laparoscopic hepatectomy has resulted in a better short-term outcome after surgery than conventional open hepatectomy. The long-term prognosis in the laparoscopic hepatectomy group was similar to that in the open hepatectomy group. Therefore, laparoscopic hepatectomy can be a new alternative for treatment of cirrhotic patients with HCC when patients are strictly selected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We conducted the present study to determine the relationship between p53-dependent apoptosis and telomerase activity in ovarian cancer cells. A human ovarian adenocarcinoma cell line, SK-OV-3 that had homozygous deletion of the p53 gene was used in this study. Wild-type p53 genes were transducted to SK-OV-3 cells with a recombinant adenovirus that contained a wild-type p53 gene μM for SK-OV-3 cells and 9.2 μM for p53 gene-transducted SK-OV-3 cells. The apoptotic index for cells with p53 gene transduction was significantly higher than cells without transduction. Additionally, p53 gene transduction significantly enhanced CDDP-induced apoptosis. Bax protein in SK-OV-3 cells did not differ before and after exposure to CDDP. In SK-OV-3 cells with transduction of the p53 gene, the expression of p53 and Bax proteins increased after exposure to CDDP. Expression of Bcl-xL decreased after exposure to CDDP in SK-OV-3 cells with and without transduction. The telomerase activity in SK-OV-3 cells with the p53 gene was significantly lower compared with the cells without the p53 gene. CDDP exposure did not affect telomerase activity and human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) expression in both cell lines. The solid-solution compounds of Gd4(Al1 − xGa x)2O9 ( x = 0.0–1.0) were prepared at 1600°C for 5 h in air. The unit cell volume of the compounds increased from 0.853 to 0.878 nm3 with x. Phase transitions having a temperature hysteresis were observed from 1100° to 1400°C by calorimetry and dilatometry. The transition temperature increased with x. The volume of the high-temperature phase was 0.5% smaller than that of the low-temperature phase at the transition temperature. The volume changes were independent of x. The hysteresis width observed by the dilatometry was about 300°C for the Gd4Al2O9 ceramics (grain size: about 1 μm) and decreased to 50°C for the Gd4(Al0.2Ga0.8)2O9 ceramics (grain size: over 10 μm). Pregnant mice were injected intraperitoneally with cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on days 13.5 and 14.5 of pregnancy. The brains of their offspring were studied histologically and histochemically. In addition to dysgenic microcephaly, nodular structures consisting of cells with a relatively homogeneous morphology were observed in the depths of the cerebral cortex. The cell clusters were first seen around postnatal day 4, and had a cellular continuity with the disarrayed pyramidal cell layer in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. Golgi-Cox staining showed a number of pyramidal-shaped cells in the clusters. Morphologically, they resembled the pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. Immunohistochemical examination, using anti-serotonin or anti-tyrosine hydroxylase antibodies, also indicated similarities between the cell clusters and the pyramidal cell layer. It is, therefore, proposed that the cell clusters consisted of heterotopic pyramidal cells of the hippocampus. A few synaptic structures could already be detected in the heterotopic cell clusters on postnatal day 3 by electron microscopy. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent chemotactic component for poly-morphonuclear leukocytes (PMN, neutrophils). Since LPS tolerance was first de-scribed, many studies have been reported about the hyporesponsiveness in vitro corresponding to attenuating production of proinflammatory cytokines. We hypothesized that in vivo daily exposure to LPS stimuli impairs neutrophil accumulation in the rat airway. Interleukin 8 (IL-8) and/or CXC-chemokine, a neutrophil chemoattractant and activating cytokine, have been implicated as proin-flammatory mediators in gram-negative respiratory tract infections. GaN single crystals were prepared in a sealed stainless-steel tube container at 650–840°C for 6–300 h using Ga, NaN3, and Na as starting materials. A thin GaN layer covered Na-Ga melt surface at the initial stage of reaction between Ga in the Na-Ga melt and N2 given by the thermal decomposition of NaN3 around 300°C. In the next stage, pyramidal and prismatic GaN single crystals grew under the layer. Prismatic and platelet crystals also grew from the melt which wetted the tube wall. The reaction rate was enhanced by increasing temperature and by increasing Na content in the melt. The maximum size of pyramidal crystals was about 0.7 mm. The platelet crystals were 1–2 mm in one direction and <0.05 mm thick. The platelet single crystals prepared at 650°C exhibited the sharpest cathodoluminescence peak with the strongest intensity at 362 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hepatectomy for cirrhotic patients with hypersplenism is a high-risk operative procedure. We report herein a new strategy for high-risk patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Methods: Six cirrhotic patients with HCC and hypersplenism received a partial hepatectomy after first undergoing a laparoscopic splenectomy. We then compared the variables for these patients before splenectomy and before hepatectomy.Results: The platelet count and the white blood cell count were found to be significantly elevated before hepatectomy. The ammonia value decreased significantly before hepatectomy. The albumin value tended to be elevated before hepatectomy. Furthermore, the Child's classification of all patients improved significantly before hepatectomy. However, other variables-such as the indocyanine green dye excretion test at 15 min and the bilirubin value-did not change after splenectomy. For hepatectomy patients who first underwent a laparoscopic splenectomy, operation time ranged from 265 to 440 min (average time, 361 min), and blood loss ranged from 500 to 2,200 ml (median volume, 1,300 ml). Four of six patients did not require any blood transfusion; furthermore, no patient needed a platelet-rich plasma transfusion. All but one patient, who suffered postoperatively from an intractable duodenal ulcer, had an uneventful postoperative course.Conclusion: Partial hepatectomy after an initial laparoscopic splenectomy is a new and effective choice of treatment for cirrhotic patients with HCC and hypersplenism. By means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the influence of the red tide species Chattonella antiqua was examined with respect to the surface ultrastructures of chloride cells of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata. Conspicuous ultrastructural alterations occurred on the apical surface of these cells. The majority of chloride cells in the control gills showed an apical surface with numerous cellular extensions, while more than half the chloride cells affected by red tide organisms exhibited an apical surface with fewer and smaller extensions, a wrinkled apical surface, or a protruded apical surface. These ultrastructural alterations of chloride cell surface may be due to the partial disturbance of salinity by C. antiqua, and reflect the changes of the ion-transport function in yellowtail gills exposed to red tide water. A new system for the delivery bleomycin (BLM) to target lesions was established by incorporating BLM into a small cylinder of a biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) of low molecular weight. Cross-sectional analysis of the system (BLM-PLA) showed that BLM particles were uniformly enclosed in the PLA matrix. In vitro studies demonstrated that BLM was released continuously for more than 3 weeks from BLM-PLA immersed in saline. BLM-PLA was implanted subcutaneously into the backs of rats. A high concentration of BLM was maintained in the connective tissues near the implants for 2 weeks. In contrast, the level of BLM activity was low when a BLM solution (BLM-SOL) was administered subcutaneously by injection. The concentration of BLM in the abdominal lymph nodes was significantly higher following BLM-PLA implantation than following subcutaneous BLM-SOL injection. The inhibitory effects of BLM-PLA and BLM-SOL on tumor growth were compared with no treatment using a subcutaneously transplanted Yoshida sarcoma. The antitumor effect of BLM-PLA was significantly higher than that of BLM-SOL and no treatment. BLM-PLA also resulted in a more favorable distribution of BLM than BLM-SOL. In the present work, the effects of 3-acetylpyridine (3-AP) on the adrenal medulla were investigated for biochemical and morphological changes. Adrenaline- and noradrenaline-storing cells treated with 3-AP one day previously had lost almost all their granules. A large number of lipoid droplets appeared in the cytoplasm. At the same time, the concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline cells were significantly decreased below control values (P< 0.01). However, these significant changes were ameliorated 19 days after 3-AP treatment. Acetylcholine synthesis in four brain regions (cerebral neocortex, hippocampus, septum and striatum) of the mouse during mild hypoxic hypoxia was measured by using [U-C]glucose and [H] choline. At the same time, concentrations of norepinephrine and dopamine in four brain regions (cerebral neocortex, hippocampus, striatum and hypothalamus) were also estimated. During 12% O hypoxia, concentrations of acetylcholine in the striatum were significantly decreased (P<0.05), whereas [H] acetylcholine, lactate and glucose did not alter in any regions studied. During 12% O hypoxia, concentrations of choline and [H]choline were significantly increased in all regions examined (P<0.05), except the [H]choline in the striatum. Radioactivity (dpm/100 mg protein) and specific activity (dpm/nmol) of acetylcholine were significantly decreased in the cerebral neocortex, hippocampus and septum (P<0.01) during 12% O hypoxia. A particularly marked decrease was found in the hippocampus, strongly suggesting that cholinergic terminals are particularly sensitive to hypoxia. In addition, these data also suggest that the acetylcholine synthesis from glucose might be more sensitive to hypoxia than that from choline. During 12% Og hypoxia, concentrations of catecholamine did not alter in any regions examined, whereas during 9% O hypoxia dopamine was significantly decreased in the cerebral neocortex and hippocampus (P<0.05). Toxic mechanisms of the red tide flagellate, Chattonella marina, collected in 1985 from Kagoshima Bay, Japan, were studied at the subcellular level. C. marina was found to reduce ferricytochrome c at a rate related to the concentration of plankton cells. Ca. 50% of the cytochrome c reduction was inhibited by the addition of 100 U superoxide dismutase ml. These results suggest that a part of the cytochrome c reduction was caused by a superoxide anion which was extracellulary released from C. marina. Moreover, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide was detected in the C. marina suspension using the fluorescence spectrophotometric assay method. The identity of the hydrogen peroxide was confirmed by its reaction with 500 U catalase ml. It is thus proposed that C. marina produces harmful active oxygen radicals and therefore exhibits a toxic effect on surrounding living organisms. In agreement with these results, C. marina strongly inhibited the proliferation of marine bacteria, Vibrio alginolyticus, in a plankton/bacteria co-culture system. The growth inhibition of bacteria caused by C. marina was related to the density and the metabolic potential of C. marina. Ruptured plankton showed no toxic effect on the bacteria. Furthermore, the toxic effect of C. marina on V. alginolyticus was completely suppressed by the addition of catalase and superoxide dismutase. In addition to these radical-scavenging enzymes, a chemical scavenger, sodium benzoate, also had a protective effect. The ITER magnet system consists of structurally linked sets of toroidal (TF) and poloidal (PF) field coils, central solenoid (CS), and various support structures. The coils are superconducting, force flow Helium cooled with a Kapton-Glass-Epoxy multilayer insulation system. The stored magnetic energy is about 100GJ in the TF system and 20GJ in the PF-CS. Coils and structure are maintained at 4 K by enclosing them in a vacuum cryostat. The cryostat, comprising an outer envelope to the magnets, forms most of the second radioactivity confinement barrier. The inner primary barrier is formed by the vacuum vessel, its ports and their extensions. To keep the machine size within acceptable bounds, it is essential that the magnets are in close proximity to both of the nuclear confinement barriers. The objective of the magnet design is that, although local damage to one of the barriers may occur in very exceptional circumstances, large scale magnet structural or thermal failure leading to simultaneous breaching of both barriers is not credible. Magnet accidents fall into three categories: thermal (which includes arcing arising from insulation failure and local overheating due to discharge failure in the event of a superconductor quench), structural (which includes component mechanical failure arising from material inadequacies, design errors and exceptional force patterns arising from coil shorts or control failures), and fluid (Helium release due to cooling line failure). After a preliminary survey to select initial faults conceivable within the present design, these faults are systematically analyzed to provide an assessment of the damage potential. The results of this damage assessment together with an assessment of the reliability of the monitoring and protective systems, shows that the magnets can operate with the required safety condition. The distribution of S-taurine in rat neonates and adults was investigated by wholy-body autoradiography. The neonates (4-day-old) were frozen in dry-ice hexane at 30 min, 1, 3 and 6 h after an intraperitoneal injection of S-taurine, whereas survival intervals for adult rats were 1 and 3 h. Whole-sagittal sections of the frozen rat, obtained by using a cryostat microtome were dried in situ and autoradiographed. In rat neonates and adults, S-taurine was mainly accumulated in the renal cortex, urine, feces, liver, eye (lens, vitreous fluid, retina), hypophysis, thymus, adrenal glands, nasal mucous membrane, salivary glands, gastric mucosa, small and large intestinal mucosa, choroid plexus, myocardium and sebaceous glands. In order to visualize regional blood flow in various tissues of the mouse at the same time, the distribution of radioactive carbon from C-iodoantipyrine was studied by whole-body autoradiography. The mice were frozen with Dry-Ice-hexane at 1, 10, 30 min, and 1 h and 3 h after intravenous injection of C-iodoantipyrine. Whole-sagittal sections of the frozen mouse, obtained by using a cryostat microtome, were dried in a cryostat and subjected to autoradiography. The resulting dry autoradiographs are called untreated autoradiographs in the present work. The sections were then fixed in cold 6% (w/v) HClO, dried at room temperature and again subjected to autoradiography. Autoradiographs thus obtained are referred to as treated autoradiographs. It was found that the method could be suitable for the estimation of regional blood flow of the renal cortex, spleen, lung, skeletal muscle, bone marrow, thymus, testes, and brain. Metabolic differences in the formation of guaiacyl and syringyl lignins were explained in terms of the different functions of O-methyltransferases and reducing enzymes which participate in methylation and reduction of the hydroxycinnamic acid intermediates in the biosynthetic pathway of these two types of lignins. Sinapyl alcohol was dehydrogenated with peroxidase and HO under various reaction conditions. Chemical properties of the dehydrogenation polymers (DHPs) formed were characterized, and the possible occurrence of syringyl lignin in hardwood was discussed. DHP and dimers of p-coumaryl alcohol were also characterized and discussed in relation to the formation of grass lignin which contains p-hydroxyphenyl propane as an additional lignin monomer. An infant born in the 34th week of gestation weighing 5,355 g with a massive sacrococcygeal (SC) tumor was delivered by elective cesarean section. An ultrasonographic examination showed solid and cystic components in the tumor. Resection was successfully undertaken with insertion of a Nélaton catheter into the rectum to avoid unnecessary impairment of the viscera. The tumor weighed 2,380 g, measured 25 × 14 × 11 cm, and was clinicopathologically diagnosed to be a SC teratoma. This experience and other publications show that several considerations including control of hemorrhage and coagulopathies, visceral protection, and avoidance of wound infection are necessary to facilitate the surgical management of massive SC tumors.
