Abstract

Malignant melanomas develop from malignant transformation of melanocytes that are present in the skin and mucosal linings throughout the body. The overall rate of mucosal melanoma is rare and malignant melanomas developing from turbinates or maxillary sinuses are extremely rare. Symptoms of nasal melanoma are generally nonspecific, and patients often fail to seek prompt medical attention. Diagnosis can be confirmed by the immunochemical profile of staining with anti-S100 and HMB-45 antibodies, even in the case of melanin-free pigment melanoma. 2. Antimicrobial peptide from Bacillus subtilis CSB138: characterization, killing kinetics, and synergistic potency.

Abstract

We studied the prospect of synergy between the antimicrobial peptide p138c and non-peptide antibiotics for increasing the potency and bacterial killing kinetics of these agents. The production of p138c was maximized in the late exponential growth phase of Bacillus subtilis CSB138. Purification of p138c resulted in a total of 4800 arbitrary units (AU) with 19.15-fold and 3.2% recovery. Peptide p138c was thermo-tolerant up to 50 °C and stable at pH 5.8 to 11. The biochemical nature of p138c was determined by a bioassay, similar to tricine-SDS-PAGE, indicating inhibition at 3 kDa. The amino acid sequence of p138c was Gly-Leu-Glu-Glu-Thr-Val-Tyr-Ile-Tyr-Gly-Ala-Asn-Met-X-Ser. Potency and killing kinetics against vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus improved considerably when p138c was synergized with oxacillin, ampicillin, and penicillin G. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of p138c showed a 4-, 8-, and 16-fold improvement when p138c was combined with oxacillin, ampicillin, and penicillin G, respectively. The fractional inhibitory concentration index for the combination of p138c and oxacillin, ampicillin, and penicillin G was 0.3125, 0.25, and 0.09, respectively. Synergy with non-peptide antibiotics resulted in enhanced killing kinetics of p138c. Hence, the synergy between antimicrobial peptide and non-peptide antibiotics may enhance the potency and bacterial killing kinetics, providing more potent and rapidly acting agents for therapeutic use. Abstract

The efficient electric power demand management in electric power supply industry is currently being changed by distributed generation. Meanwhile, small-scale distributed generation systems using renewable energy are being constructed worldwide. Several small-scale renewable distributed generation systems, which can supply electricity to the grid at peak load of the grid as per policy such as demand response programs, could help in the stability of the electric power demand management. In this case, the power quality of the small-scale renewable distributed generation system is more significant. Low prices of power semiconductors and multilevel inverters with high power quality have been recently investigated. However, the conventional multilevel inverter topology is unsuitable for the small-scale renewable distributed generation system, because the number of devices of such topology increases with increasing output voltage level. In this paper, a single-phase multilevel inverter based on H-bridge, with DC_Link divided by bi-directional switches, is proposed. The proposed topology has almost half the number of devices of the conventional multilevel inverter topology when these inverters have the same output voltage level. Double Fourier series solution is mainly used when comparing PWM output harmonic components of various inverter topologies. Harmonic components of the proposed multilevel inverter, which have been analyzed by double Fourier series, are compared with those of the conventional multilevel inverter. 4. Automatic Partial Parsing Rule Acquisition Using Decision Tree Induction.

Abstract

Partial parsing techniques try to recover syntactic information efficiently and reliably by sacrificing completeness and depth of analysis. One of the difficulties of partial parsing is finding a means to extract the grammar involved automatically. In this paper, we present a method for automatically extracting partial parsing rules from a tree-annotated corpus using decision tree induction. We define the partial parsing rules as those that can decide the structure of a substring in an input sentence deterministically. This decision can be considered as a classification; as such, for a substring in an input sentence, a proper structure is chosen among the structures occurred in the corpus. For the classification, we use decision tree induction, and induce partial parsing rules from the decision tree. The acquired grammar is similar to a phrase structure grammar, with contextual and lexical information, but it allows building structures of depth one or more. Our experiments showed that the proposed partial parser using the automatically extracted rules is not only accurate and efficient, but also achieves reasonable coverage for Korean. 5. On the Individuality of the Iris Biometric.

Abstract

Biometric authentication has been considered a model for quantitatively establishing the discriminative power of biometric data. The dichotomy model classifies two biometric samples as coming either from the same person or from two different people. This paper reviews features, distance measures, and classifiers used in iris authentication. For feature extraction we compare simple binary and multi-level 2D wavelet features. For distance measures we examine scalar distances such as Hamming and Euclidean, feature vector and histogram distances. Finally, for the classifiers we compare Bayes decision rule, nearest neighbor, artificial neural network, and support vector machines. Of the eleven different combinations tested, the best one uses multi-level 2D wavelet features, the histogram distance, and a support vector machine classifier. 6. Visual Mining for Customer Targeting.

Abstract

In this paper, we propose the customer map - the information visualization method for customer targeting. To develop the customer map, we classify customer data into customer needs, customer characteristics, and customer value. We suggest an analysis framework to derive key dimensions of the customer map by data mining techniques and a network mapping method to detect meaningful combinations of key dimensions. The customer map is built visually in terms of these key dimensions. The proposed visual targeting model helps a decision maker to build customer-oriented strategies and offers them the ability to monitor and perceive the real time state of customer value distribution based on their information without preconception. 8. Surgical Strategy for T1 Gallbladder Cancer: A Nationwide Multicenter Survey in South Korea.

Abstract

Background. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and clinical outcomes of T1 gallbladder (GB) cancer and to determine an appropriate surgical strategy for T1 GB cancer. Methods. A nationwide multicenter study, in which 16 University Hospitals in Korea participated, was performed from 1995 to 2004. A total of 258 patients, 117 patients with T1a and 141 patients with T1b disease were enrolled. Clinicopathologic findings and long-term follow-up results were analyzed after a consensus meeting of the Korean Pancreas Surgery Club was held. Results. Simple cholecystectomy was performed in 95 patients (81.2 %) with T1a tumor and in 89 patients (63.1 %) with T1b tumor (p\0.01). Lymph node metastasis was observed in 2.9 % of T1a patients and in 9.9 % of T1b patients (p = 0.391). A significant difference in 5-year disease-specific survival (DSS) rates was observed between T1a and T1b patients (96.4 vs 84.8 %, respectively, p = 0.03). However, no significant 5-year DSS rate difference was observed between those who underwent simple cholecystectomy or extended cholecystectomy, regardless of whether lymph node dissection was performed or whether lymph node metastasis was present. There was no significant difference in recurrence-free survival between simple cholecystectomy and extended cholecystectomy. Conclusions. There was no superiority of extended cholecystectomy over simple cholecystectomy in the aspect of survival and recurrence especially in T1b gallbladder cancer. Furthermore, the effectiveness of regional lymphadenectomy for treatment purpose remains questionable. Abstract

Homogeneously distributed zinc nanoparticles (NPs) on the glass substrate were investigated for the transmittance, mechanical durability, and antibacterial effect. The buffered Ti NPs between Zn NPs and glass substrate were studied for an enhancement of the transmittance and mechanical endurance. The Ti NPs buffered Zn NPs showed a high transmittance of approximately 91.5% (at a wavelength of 550 nm) and a strong antibacterial activity for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. The buffered Ti NPs are attractive for an excellent mechanical endurance of the Zn NPs. The Zn NPs did not require the protection layer to prevent the degradation of the performance for both the antibacterial effect and the transmittance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Manipulating the orbital state in a strongly correlated electron system is of fundamental and technological importance for exploring and developing novel electronic phases. Here, we report an unambiguous demonstration of orbital occupancy control between t2g and eg multiplets in quasi-two-dimensional transition metal oxide superlattices (SLs) composed of a Mott insulator LaCoO3 and a band insulator LaAlO3. As the LaCoO3 sublayer thickness approaches its fundamental limit (i.e. one unit-cell-thick), the electronic state of the SLs changed from a Mott insulator, in which both t2g and eg orbitals are partially filled, to a band insulator by completely filling (emptying) the t2g (eg) orbitals. We found the reduction of dimensionality has a profound effect on the electronic structure evolution, which is, whereas, insensitive to the epitaxial strain. The remarkable orbital controllability shown here offers a promising pathway for novel applications such as catalysis and photovoltaics, where the energy of d level is an essential parameter. Abstract

Metallic states appearing at interfaces between dissimilar insulating oxides exhibit intriguing phenomena such as superconductivity and magnetism. Despite tremendous progress in understanding their origins, very little is known about how to control the conduction pathways and the distribution of charge carriers. Using optical spectroscopic measurements and density-functional theory (DFT) simulations, we examine the effect of SrTiO3 (STO) spacer layer thickness on the optical transparency and carrier distribution in La δ-doped STO superlattices. We experimentally observe that these metallic superlattices remain highly transparent to visible light; a direct consequence of the appropriately large gap between the O 2p and Ti 3d states. In superlattices with relatively thin STO layers, we predict that three-dimensional conduction would occur due to appreciable overlap of quantum mechanical wavefunctions between neighboring δ-doped layers. These results highlight the potential for using oxide heterostructures in optoelectronic devices by providing a unique route for creating novel transparent conducting oxides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Spin–torque nano–oscillators (STNOs) have outstanding advantages of a high degree of compactness, high–frequency tunability, and good compatibility with the standard complementary metal–oxide– semiconductor process, which offer prospects for future wireless communication. There have as yet been no reports on wireless communication using STNOs, since the STNOs also have notable disadvantages such as lower output power and poorer spectral purity in comparison with those of LC voltage–controlled oscillators. Here we show that wireless communication is achieved by a proper choice of modulation scheme despite these drawbacks of STNOs. By adopting direct binary amplitude shift keying modulation and non–coherent demodulation, we demonstrate STNO–based wireless communication with 200–kbps data rate at a distance of 1 m between transmitter and receiver. It is shown, from the analysis of STNO noise, that the maximum data rate can be extended up to 1.48 Gbps with 1–ns turn–on time. For the fabricated STNO, the maximum data rate is 5 Mbps which is limited by the rise time measured in the total system. The result will provide a viable route to real microwave application of STNOs. Abstract

Objective: To introduce a new grading system of lumbar central canal stenosis, evaluate its reliabilities, and compare it to the cross-sectional area and anterior-posterior diameter of the dural sac.Materials and Methods: Lumbar central canal stenosis is defined as obliteration of the anterior CSF space in front of the cauda equina. Four musculoskeletal radiologists independently graded lumbar central canal stenosis by this new grading system based on separation degree of the cauda equina on T2-weighted axial images (grade 0 = no lumbar stenosis without obliteration of anterior CSF space; grade 1 = mild stenosis with separation of all cauda equina; grade 2 = moderate stenosis with some cauda equina aggregated; and grade 3 = severe stenosis with none of the cauda equina separated) in 81 patients to determine inter- and intra-reader reliability. One radiologist measured cross-sectional areas and anterior-posterior diameters and compared these to lumbar central canal stenosis grades.Results: Inter-reader reliabilities were substantial to almost perfect (ICC reliability = 0.730-0.953). Intra-reader reliability was almost perfect (kappa value = 0.863-0.900). Cross-sectional areas and anterior-posterior diameters were different according to grades at all levels (p = 0.000-0.049), except between grades 2 and 3 of L2-3. At L5-S1, only anterior-posterior diameter was different between grades 0 and 1 (p = 0.005) and between grades 0 and 2 (p = 0.022).Conclusions: This new grading system may be helpful to clinicians for simple and practical evaluation of lumbar central canal stenosis and for communicating with each other. Abstract

The marine dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides is a harmful and highly motile algal species. To distinguish between the motility characteristics of solitary and chain-forming cells, the swimming trajectories and speeds of solitary cells and 2- to 8-cell chains of C. polykrikoides were measured using a digital holographic particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) technique. C. polykrikoides cells exhibited helical swimming trajectories similar to other dinoflagellate species. The swimming speed increased as the number of cells in the chain increased, from an average of 391 μm s (solitary cells) to 856 μm s (8-cell chain). The helix radius R and pitch P also increased as the number of cells in the chain increased. R increased from 9.24 μm (solitary cell) to 20.3 μm (8-cell chain) and P increased from 107 μm (solitary cell) to 164 μm (8-cell chain). The free thrust-generating motion of the transverse flagella and large drag reduction in the chain-forming cells seemed to increase the swimming speed compared to solitary cells. The measured swimming speeds agreed with those from field observations. The superior motility of chain-forming C. polykrikoides cells may be an important factor for its bloom, in addition to the factors reported previously. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between visceral and subcutaneous adiposity measured by computed tomography and bone mineral density (BMD) and to identify the metabolic factors associated with BMD. We studied 461 subjects recruited from the health-care center at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to examine the cross-sectional associations between body composition-related or metabolic parameters and BMD. After adjusting for body weight and other confounders, visceral fat area had an inverse association with BMD in men (beta = -0.133, P = 0.049 for lumbar spine; beta = -0.135, P = 0.037 for femoral neck; beta = -0.179, P = 0.005 for total hip) and women (beta = -0.424, P < 0.001 for lumbar spine; beta = -0.302, P = 0.005 for femoral neck; beta = -0.274, P = 0.014 for total hip). However, the subcutaneous fat area showed no statistically significant relationship with BMD at most sites. Among the metabolic parameters, HDL cholesterol was positively associated with BMD, while LDL cholesterol was negatively associated with BMD in men. In women, total and LDL cholesterol were negatively associated with BMD at the lumbar spine. We conclude that visceral adiposity is inversely associated with BMD after adjusting for confounders and that metabolic factors may partly contribute to this inverse relation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present work was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activity and neuroprotective effects of Tripterygium regelii extract (TRE) on H2O2-induced apoptosis in human dopaminergic cells, SH-SY5Y. TRE possessed considerable amounts of phenolics (282.73 mg tannic acid equivalents/g of extract) and flavonoids (101.43 mg naringin equivalents/g of extract). IC50 values for reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activity were 52.51 and 47.83 μg, respectively. The H2O2 scavenging capacity of TRE was found to be 57.68 μM × μg−1 min−1. By examining the effects of TRE on SH-SY5Y cells injured by H2O2, we found that after incubation of cells with TRE prior to H2O2 exposure, the H2O2 induced cytotoxicity was significantly reversed and the apoptotic features such as change in cellular morphology, nuclear condensation and DNA fragmentation was inhibited. Moreover, TRE was very effective attenuating the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential and apoptotic cell death induced by H2O2. TRE extract effectively suppressed the up-regulation of Bax, Caspase-3 and -9, and down-regulation of Bcl-2. Moreover, TRE pretreatment evidently increased the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in SH-SY5Y cells. These findings demonstrate that TRE protects SH-SY5Y cells against H2O2-induced injury and antioxidant properties may account for its neuroprotective actions and suggest that TRE might potentially serve as an agent for prevention of neurodegenerative disease associated with oxidative stress. Abstract

Gravity-induced loss of consciousness (G-LOC) is caused by loss of cerebral blood flow during high +Gz (head-to-foot inertial forces). The resistance of the jugular vein is a significant factor in decrease in cerebral blood flow. Ultrasonography of thoracic inlet veins, including internal jugular vein, is feasible to visualize the internal jugular vein and hemodynamic information. Anti-gravity straining maneuver (AGSM) was widely recognized as one of the important factors in preventing G-LOC. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the ultrasonographic shape and size of internal jugular vein during AGSM and G-LOC. 47 trainee pilots who participated in human centrifuge education program were enrolled. They were all men, and their mean age was 23.9 +/- 1.38 years. Questionnaire sheets were used to collect information about well-being sensation, smoking, drinking, height, and weight. Using ultrasonography, we monitored shape and size of internal jugular vein during AGSM. After ultrasonographic examination, 47 subjects underwent human centrifuge on the same day. The protocol of human centrifuge training was maximal 6G with sustaining time of 30 s. G-LOC occurred to ten out of 47 subjects in human centrifuge. To find presumptive variable associated with G-LOC, we performed logistic regression analysis. Abstract

RAV1 (Related to ABI3/VP1) proteins function as a transcription factor in signal transduction pathways in plants. The yeast-two-hybrid and in vivo coimmunoprecipitation assays identified the pepper ( Capsicum annuum) oxidoreductase protein CaOXR1 that physically interacts with the pepper CaRAV1 transcription factor. The AP2 domain of CaRAV1 protein is essential for its direct interaction with CaOXR1. Both CaRAV1 and CaOXR1 proteins co-localize to the nuclei of plant cells. Virus-induced gene silencing of CaRAV1 and CaRAV1/ CAOXR1 confers enhanced susceptibility to high salinity and osmotic stresses, which is accompanied by altered expression of the stress marker genes in pepper. Expression of CaAMP1 (pepper antimicrobial protein) and CaOSM1 (pepper osmotin) is suppressed by 1.2-6.6-fold in silenced leaves upon treatment with NaCl or mannitol. Overxpression of CaRAV1, CaOXR1 and CaOXR1/ CaRAV1 in Arabidopsis also confers enhanced resistance to the biotrophic oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis infection. In addition, CaRAV1- and CaOXR1/ CaRAV1-overexpression (OX) Arabidopsis plants are highly tolerant to high salinity and osmotic stress. Abstract

This study examined the changes in knee alignment after an open wedge high tibial osteotomy before and after weight-bearing. From 2004 to 2006, 36 high tibial osteotomies were performed to treat unicompartmental arthritis with a varus deformity. Thirteen patients without instability and with an accurate radiographic evaluation were included. The changes in the deviation of the mechanical axis and femorotibial angle were evaluated retrospectively using whole extremity radiographs immediately after surgery (supine position) and 4 months after surgery (weight-bearing position). In the nonweight-bearing radiograph obtained immediately after surgery, the mean deviation of the mechanical axis was 22% laterally and the mean femorotibial angle was valgus 8.9°. The weight-bearing radiograph at 4 months after surgery showed that the former shifted laterally 34% and the latter shifted valgus 10.6°. The changes in the mechanical axis and femorotibial angle were significant ( P < 0.001). Abstract

Incorporated SiC nanoparticles are demonstrated to influence the solidification of magnesium-zinc alloys resulting in strong, ductile, and castable materials. By ultrasonically dispersing a small amount (less than 2 vol pct) of SiC nanoparticles, both the strength and ductility exhibit marked enhancement in the final casting. This unusual ductility enhancement is the result of the nanoparticles altering the selection of intermetallic phases. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the MgZn2 phase was discovered among SiC nanoparticle clusters in hypoeutectic compositions. Differential thermal analysis showed that the MgZn2 formation resulted in elimination of other intermetallics in the Mg-4Zn nanocomposite and reduced their formation in Mg-6Zn and Mg-8Zn nanocomposites. Abstract

The primary goal of this investigation was to develop a calcium phosphate film hybridized with 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 for the improvement of osteoconductivity of bone substitutes. The hybrid films (hCaP) were prepared at the different concentrations of 1 × 10−10, 1 × 10−8, and 1 × 10−6 M designated as hCaPL, hCaPM, and hCaPH, respectively. The change of the hormone concentration during the preparation of the hybrid films did not cause significant variations on the physical properties of hCaPs, i.e. surface morphology and roughness. On the other hand, X-ray photon spectroscope (XPS) measurements revealed that the concentration change affected the chemical composition of the hybrid films. Recruitment of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells was considerably improved on hCaPs compared to tissue culture plate (TCP). However, cell proliferation on hCaPs was substantially suppressed and inversely proportional to the hormone concentration used. It was observed that bone-like nodules which consisted of bead-like components and well-developed matrix were rapidly formed on hCaPs. Masson’s trichrome and safranin-O stainings elucidated that the bead-like components were MG-63 cells. Safranin-O staining showed that proteoglycan was produced actively. These results indicate that the cells cultured on hCaPs were strongly stimulated by the hormone to produce proteoglycan which can be considered as an induction of premature bone formation. The number of the nodules was increased with hormone concentration and most pronounced at the hCaPH. Gene expression patterns of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), and osteopontin (OPN) were strongly modulated by hybridized the hormone. For ALP and OPN, gene expressions were activated earlier on hCaPs than untreated calcium phosphate (CaP) confirming the effect of the hybridization was substantial. The TGF-β gene expression was immediately activated after seeding but difference between samples was not significant suggesting that the gene expression was modulated not by the hormone hybridization but by CaP itself. This study examined the efficacy and safety of nifedipine sustained release (nifedipine SR) compared with Ginkgo biloba extract as treatment for primary Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) in Korea. Primary RP were screened and assigned to either the nifedipine SR group (Group N) or the Ginkgo biloba extract group (Group G) in the ratio of 2:1. After a run-in period of 2 weeks, patients received treatment for 8 weeks. We observed the percent improvement of the RP attack rate between before and after the 8-week treatment. Ninety-three subjects were randomly assigned. The percent improvement in Group N was 50.1% at 8 weeks after treatment, while it was 31.0% in Group G ( p = 0.03). No serious adverse events occurred, and almost adverse events were mild and improved without specific treatment. nifedipine SR was more effective than Ginkgo biloba extract for treatment of primary RP in Korean patients. 23. Characterization of a strong CCA-treated wood degrader, unknown Crustoderma species.

Abstract

Abstract  In this study, basidiomycete isolates that possessed a strong ability to degrade chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood were characterized. These fungal isolates, which were collected from CCA-treated pine log wastes, showed no recognizable morphological properties on culture media. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the large subunit rDNA of the isolates revealed that they were one species. Based on the high sequence similarity (>95%) and close phylogenetic relationship with several known species of Crustoderma, the fungal isolates characterized in this study were classified as a Crustoderma sp. In a wood degradation test, Crustoderma isolate KUC8611 produced a remarkably higher weight loss in CCA-treated Pinus radiata (68.7%), Pseudotsuga menziesii (39.7%), and Tsuga heterophylla (38.5%) wood than other evaluated basidiomycete species, including Crustoderma flavescens and Crustoderma corneum. In addition, extracellular enzymes for cellulose and protein degradation were detected when the isolates were cultured in chromogenic media, which supports the finding that isolate KUC8611 is a wood degrader. Furthermore, an in vitro test for metal tolerance revealed that isolate KUC8611 showed strong arsenic tolerance, but that it could not tolerate copper. Finally, isolate KUC8611 produced lower amounts of oxalic acid than copper-tolerant fungi such as Fomitopsis palustris and Antrodia vaillantii. Abstract

We performed a single-institution retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy and toxicities of oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), leucovorin (LV) combination chemotherapy as salvage treatment in patients with metastatic or advanced gastric cancer. Sixty-two patients with advanced gastric cancer previously treated were eligible for the study. Patients received oxaliplatin 100 mg/m2 and LV 100 mg/m2 (2-h intravenous infusion) followed by 5-FU 2,400 mg/m2 (46-h continuous infusion) every 2 weeks, and responses were assessed after every three cycles. Fifty-nine out of 62 patients were assessable for response. Among them, 46 patients had previously been treated with cisplatin based chemotherapy. Patients had a median age of 57 years (range 32–76 years), 72.6% had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1. Total 296 courses of chemotherapy were administered as second-line (67.7%) or third-line (27.4%), and the median courses per patient was three cycles. Out of 59 evaluable patients, 14 partial responses were observed (overall response rate, 22.6%). Stable disease was observed in 22 patients (35.5%), and progressive disease in 23 patients (37.1%). The median response duration, time to progression, and overall survival were 2.3, 3.0, and 8.0 months, respectively. The major toxicities were neutropenia, mucositis, and peripheral neuropathy. Grade 3 or 4 hematologic toxicities included neutropenia in nine patients (14.5%) and thrombocytopenia in one patient (1.6%). Other grade 3 or 4 toxicities included mucositis in one patient (1.6%) and vomiting in two patients (3.2%). Grade 1 or 2 peripheral neuropathy were observed in 18 patients (29.0%), however there were no cases of grade 3 or 4 peripheral neuropathy and no treatment-related deaths. Ag–ceramic pastes were prepared by adding Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Zr0.475,Ti0.525)O3 (PMNZT) ceramic powders to a commercial Ag paste in the range of 0 to 50 wt.%. PMNZT/Ag–PMNZT multilayered laminates were fabricated using tape casting and subsequently cofired at 925°C for 10 h. The addition of PMNZT into Ag electrode decreased the thermal shrinkage mismatch between the composite layers, which led to improve mass producibility of MLCA through reducing delamination probability during cofiring process. Abstract

GDSL-type lipase is a hydrolytic enzyme whose amino acid sequence contains a pentapeptide motif (Gly-X-Ser-X-Gly) with active serine (Ser). Pepper GDSL-type lipase ( CaGLIP1) gene was isolated and functionally characterized from pepper leaf tissues infected by Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria ( Xcv). The CaGLIP1 protein was located in the vascular tissues of Arabidopsis root. The CaGLIP1 gene was preferentially expressed in pepper leaves during the compatible interaction with Xcv. Treatment with salicylic acid, ethylene and methyl jasmonate induced CaGLIP1 gene expression in pepper leaves. Sodium nitroprusside, methyl viologen, high salt, mannitol-mediated dehydration and wounding also induced early and transient CaGLIP1 expression in pepper leaf tissues. Virus-induced gene silencing of CaGLIP1 in pepper conferred enhanced resistance to Xcv, accompanied by the suppressed expression of basic PR1 ( CaBPR1) and defensin ( CaDEF1) genes. The CaGLIP1 lipase produced in Escherichia coli hydrolyzed the substrates of short and long chain nitrophenyl esters. The CaGLIP1-overexpressing Arabidopsis exhibited enhanced hydrolytic activity toward short and long chain nitrophenyl ester, as well as enhanced susceptibility to the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and the biotrophic oomycete Hyaloperonospora parasitica. SA-induced expression of AtPR1 and AtGST1, also was delayed in CaGLIP1-overexpressing plants by SA application. During seed germination and plant growth, the CaGLIP1 transgenic plants showed drought tolerance and differential expression of drought- and abscisic acid (ABA)-inducible genes AtRD29A, AtADH and AtRab18. ABA treatment differentially regulated seed germination and gene expression in wild-type and CaGLIP1 transgenic Arabidopsis. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term survival results and complications of percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Between April 1999 and May 2005, 570 patients with 674 early-stage HCCs underwent percutaneous RFA as a first-line treatment option in a single institution. We evaluated the effectiveness rates, local tumor progression rates, survival rates, and complications. We also assessed the prognostic values of survival rates by using Cox proportional hazard models. The primary technique effectiveness rate was 96.7% (652 of 674). The cumulative rates of local tumor progression at 1, 2, and 3 years were 8.1%, 10.9%, and 11.8%, respectively. The cumulative survival rates at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years were 95.2%, 82.9%, 69.5%, 60.8%, and 58.0%, respectively. Patients with Child-Pugh class A cirrhosis, of younger age (≤58 years), or having lower AFP level (≤100 μg/L) demonstrated better survival results ( P < 0.05). A total of 11 major complications (1.9% per treatment) were found during the follow-up period. There was no procedure-related death. Percutaneous RFA can be used successfully as a first-line treatment modality for early-stage HCCs. Abstract

Transcription factors often belong to multigene families and their individual contribution in a particular regulatory network remains difficult to assess. We identify and functionally characterize the pepper bZIP transcription factor CAbZIP1 gene isolated from pepper leaves infected with Xanthomonas campestris pv. v esicatoria. Transient expression analysis of the CAbZIP1–GFP fusion protein in Arabidopsis protoplasts revealed that the CAbZIP1 protein is localized in the nucleus. The N-terminal region of CAbZIP1 fused to the GAL4 DNA-binding domain is required to activate transcription of reporter genes in yeast. The CAbZIP1 transcripts are constitutively expressed in the pepper root and flower, but not in the leaf, stem and fruit. The CAbZIP1 gene is locally or systemically induced in pepper plants infected by either X. campestris pv. vesicatoria or Pseudomonas fluorescens. The CAbZIP1 gene is also induced by abiotic elicitors and environmental stresses. The CAbZIP1 transgenic Arabidopsis exhibits a dwarf phenotype, indicating that CAbZIP1 may be involved in plant development. The CAbZIP1 overexpression in the transgenic Arabidopsis plants confers enhanced resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000, accompanied by expression of the AtPR-4 and AtRD29A. The transgenic plants also exhibit increased drought and salt tolerance during all growth stages. Moreover, the transgenic plants are tolerant to methyl viologen-oxidative stress. Inactivation of the p16INK4a tumor suppressor protein is critical for the development of human cancers, including human melanoma. However, the molecular basis of the protein's inhibitory effect on cancer development is not clear. Here we investigated a possible mechanism for p16INK4a inhibition of neoplastic transformation and UV-induced skin cancer. We show that p16INK4a suppresses the activity of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) and that it binds to the glycine-rich loop of the N-terminal domain of JNK3. Although p16INK4a does not affect the phosphorylation of JNKs, its interaction with JNK inhibits c-Jun phosphorylation induced by UV exposure. Objective: The outcome of systemic chemotherapy in metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients had been disappointing. Based on the demonstrated activities and different mechanisms of action and toxicity profiles, we designed a phase II trial of combination therapy with doxorubicin and cisplatin in metastatic HCC patients anticipating a synergistic interaction of the combination. Methods: From January 1998 to January 2003, 42 consecutive patients with metastatic HCC were accrued. The regimen consisted of doxorubicin 60 mg/m2 delivered as an intravenous infusion over 30 min on day 1, followed by cisplatin 60 mg/m2 infused over 1 h on day 1. The cycle was repeated every 28 days. The objective tumor response was evaluated after two or three courses of chemotherapy. The serum alpha-fetoprotein level was measured at the start of every cycle. Results: In total, 122 cycles of the regimen were administered, with a median of three cycles per patient (range one to eight cycles). The median age of the patients was 45 years (range 19–61 years), and 37 were evaluable for treatment response. The objective response rate was 18.9% (95% CI 8.0-35%) with one complete response and six partial responses. Six patients (16.2%) had stable disease and 24 patients (64.9%) had progression. Median overall survival of 37 patients was 7.3 months (95% CI 5.9–8.6 months). The median time to progression of all evaluable patients was 6.6 months (95% CI 5.4–7.8 months). Of 37 evaluable patients, 12 32.4%, 95% CI 18.0-49.8%) showed more than 50% decrease in AFP level from their baseline AFP and the median time to decrease in AFP by more than 50% was 1.8 months with a range of 0.7–4.7 months. The chemotherapy was well tolerated and the most common grade ¾ side effects were neutropenia (14.3%), thrombocytopenia (11.9%), and diarrhea (9.5%). Conclusion: Combination chemotherapy with doxorubicin and cisplatin in metastatic HCC patients showed modest antitumor activity with relatively tolerable adverse effects. Abstract

Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate the optimal exposure time for nuclear envelope breakdown (NEBD) after injection of a round spermatid and to investigate the effect of oocyte activation timing on the fertilization rate and early embryo development in porcine round spermatid injection procedure. Methods: Injected oocytes were fixed at 0.5, 1,2,3, and 4 h before activation, and NEBD state was examined. The three groups of oocytes were activated before and after the injection of spermatid using a single direct current pulse (100 V/mm, 50μs): group 1) at 2 h before the injection (pre), group 2) within 0.5 h after the injection (immediate), and group 3) at 2 h after the injection (post). Activated oocytes were cultured and pronucleus formation and blastocyst development was evaluated at 15–18 h and 7–8 days after the injection, respectively. Results: The proportion of oocytes with NEBD significantly increased in the groups with over 2 h of exposure time (p < 0.05) and oocyte with premature chromosome condensation began to appear 3 h after the injection. Normal fertilization and development rate to the blastocyst stage were significantly higher in the post group than in those of the pre or immediate group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The optimal exposure time for NEBD is 2 h after the injection, and activation in 2 h after round spermatid injection improved the normal fertilization and early embryo development rate. Abstract

Significant unproductive and costly waiting occurs during AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) use, both under the CC (Container Crane) and in the blocks compared to that of a manual yard tractor. A possible solution to this problem is that, in the design of ACT (Automated Container Terminals), ALV (Automated Lifting Vehicles), which can load and unload their own containers, be considered as an alternative. In this paper, the objective is to analyze how increases in the use of ALVs rather than AGVs affects the productivity of ACTs. We derived four inferences regarding the cycle time of vehicles and verified their validity in a simulation. A simulation model of an ACT with perpendicular layout was developed and is described in this paper. From the results of the simulation analysis, we determined the savings effect by cycle time and the required number of vehicles. We demonstrated that the ALV is superior to the AGV in both productivity and efficiency principally because the ALV eliminates the waiting time in the buffer zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reaction characteristics of the In-15Pb-5Ag (wt.%) solder with a Au/Ni/Cu pad during reflow soldering and aging treatment were examined. Interfacial reaction during reflow resulted in either an AuIn2 or Ni28In72 layer, depending on reflow time. The AuIn2 layer became thinner and disappeared from the interface, and only the Ni28In72 layer grew with the progress of aging treatment at 130°C. Based on those observations, the dissolution rate of the Au top layer was estimated, and the behavior of the AuIn2 layer during reflow and aging treatment was discussed. In addition, peak shear load and fracture energy of the solder bump were measured as a function of reflow time and aging treatment. Abstract

Background and aims. The double-stapled ileoanal reservoir (DSIAR) has become a preferred method for ileal pouch anal anastomosis in restorative proctocolectomy. This investigation assessed the relative ratio of epithelial tissue types within the anal transition zone after a DSIAR and reviewed functional physiological differences. Patients and methods. All 138 patients who underwent restorative proctocolectomy with a DSIAR for mucosal ulcerative colitis were stratified into two groups according to histological evidence of epithelium types in the distal excised rectal donut. In group I a squamous or a squamous mixed with columnar epithelium was present (n=40) whereas in group II only columnar epithelium was seen (n=98). Anal physiological parameters were measured by anal manometry preoperatively, prior to ileostomy closure, and 1 year after surgery. Results. None of the preoperative resting and squeeze pressure parameters showed a significant difference between the two groups. Postoperative mean and maximal resting pressures were significantly decreased in both groups. Postoperative mean and maximum squeeze pressures were decreased in group I. Postoperative mean length of the high-pressure zone tended to be decreased in both groups. The decrease in rectoanal inhibitory reflex was significant in both groups. Postoperative functional parameters measured as maximal tolerable volume and compliance were significantly improved from preoperative values in both groups. Conclusion. The tissue type in the anal transitional zone after DSIAR has a wide variability at a similar level (height) of the anastomosis. However, these different epithelial types were not associated with substantial physiological functional differences. Abstract

Aqueous corrosion characteristics of iron aluminides in thiosulfate-chloride solution were studied as a function of chromium addition. Four kinds of iron aluminides, namely, FA-61, FA-77, FA-72 and FA-78, were prepared by arc melting followed by thermomechanical treatment. The corrosion behavior in thiosulfate-chloride solution for the prepared alloys were investigated by electrochemical tests (potentiodynamic test, potentiostatic test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement) and surface analyses. The results of the potentiodynamic test indicated that the breakdown potential increased with increasing Cr content. Cr additions were found to prevent passive film from undergoing pitting corrosion. In EIS measurement, the depression angle was inversely related to pitting resistance, and decreased with increasing chromium content. The SEM observations of the sample surfaces reveal the different forms of pit as a function of chromium content. The AES results give evidence that the thiosulfate ions are reduced on the metallic surface, which inhibits the repassivation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: Rectoanal intussusception is the funnel-shaped infolding of the rectum, which occurs during evacuation. The aims of this study were to evaluate the risk of full thickness rectal prolapse during follow-up of patients with large rectoanal intussusception, and whether therapy improved functional outcome. METHODS: Between September 1988 and July 1997, patients diagnosed with a large rectoanal intussusception by cinedefecography (intussusception ≥ 10 mm, extending into the anal canal) were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with full thickness rectal prolapse on physical examination or cinedefecography were excluded, as were patients with colonic inertia or a history of surgery for rectal prolapse. The patients were divided into three groups according to the treatment received: group I, conservative dietary therapy: group II, biofeedback; and group III, surgery. Outcomes were obtained by postal questionnaires or telephone interviews. Parameters included age, gender, past medical and surgical history, change of bowel habits, fecal incontinence score, and development of full thickness rectal prolapse. RESULTS: Of the 63 patients, 18 were excluded (seven patients had confirmed full thickness rectal prolapse, four had previous surgery for rectal prolapse, three had colonic inertia, and four died). Follow-up data were obtained in 36 (80%) of the remaining 45 patients. The mean follow-up of this group was 45 months (range. 12-118 months). There were 34 women and two men, with a mean age of 72.4 yr (range, 37-91 yr). The mean size of the intussusception was 2.2 cm (range, 1.0-5.0 cm). The patients were classified as follows: group I, 13 patients (36.1%); group II, 13 patients (36.1%); and group III. 10 patients (27.8%). Subjectively, symptoms improved in five (38.5%). four (30.8%). and six (60.0%) patients in the three groups (p > 0.05). Among the patients with constipation, the decrease in numbers of assisted bowel movements per week (time of diagnosis to present) was significantly greater in group 11 compared to group I (8.1 ± 2.8 vs 0.8 ± 0.5. respectively, p = 0.004). Among the patients with incontinence, incontinence scores improved more in group II as compared to either group I or group III (time of diagnosis to present. 3.7 ± 4.2 to 1.1 ± 5.4 vs 1.4 ± 2.2. respectively, p > 0.05). Six patients (two in group I, three in group 11, and one in group III) had the sensation of rectal prolapse on evacuation; however, only one patient in group I developed full thickness rectal prolapse. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the risk of full thickness rectal prolapse developing in patients medically treated for large intussusception is very small (1/26, 3.8%). Moreover, biofeedback is beneficial to improve the symptoms of both constipation and incontinence in these patients. Abstract

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are not only responsible for organ dysfunction due to inefficient energy production but also indicators of metabolic and functional stresses in the organ. To analyze the significance of deletion mutation in human myocardium, we screened the presence of two common deletions (7.4 kb from 8637–16084 nt, 5.0kb from 8470–13477 nt) in four chambers using long PCR, and using serial-dilution PCR, measured the amount of deleted mtDNA in normal heart (NL) of brain-dead victims of road accidents (n = 9, age = 10–59) and failing hearts (CHF) of patients who underwent heart transplantation (n = 24, age = 17–63). Frequency of both deletions was higher in ventricles (Vt) than in atria (At) (Vt: At = 25/33 : 12/33 for 7.4 kb, 19/33 : 6/33 for 5 kb) (p < 0.05), whereas it was the same in the right and left chambers. In ventricles, both deletions were more frequent among older persons (> 35 yrs) than in younger persons /≤ 35 yrs) (older : younger = 16/20 : 9/13 for 7.4 kb, 15/20 : 4/13 for 5 kb) (p < 0.05). In ventricles of failing heart, the 5-kb deletion was more frequent than in those of normal heart (CHF : NL = 17/24 : 2/9) (p < 0.05), whereas the 7.4-kb deletion was frequent both in failing and normal hearts (CHF : NL = 19/24 : 6/9). The association of mutation with aging or disease process observed in ventricles was not found in the atria. Although the amount of mutant mtDNA in the left ventricle tended to increase according to a disease process, it was small, at most 1.56% or 0.012% of total mtDNA for a 7.4- or 5-kb deletion, respectively. No deletion was found, however, in lymphocytes from any patient who underwent transplantation. In conclusion, deletion mutation of mtDNA is frequently, but in a small amount, found in the ventricle of older failing heart than in the atrium of younger normal heart. This suggests that hemodynamic stress, age, and disease are factors to induce mtDNA mutation that represents the indicator of stresses on the heart and might turn into a contributor of progressive heart failure under extreme conditions. Abstract

This study examined the efficacy and safety of nifedipine sustained release (nifedipine SR) compared with Ginkgo biloba extract as treatment for primary Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) in Korea. Primary RP were screened and assigned to either the nifedipine SR group (Group N) or the Ginkgo biloba extract group (Group G) in the ratio of 2:1. After a run-in period of 2 weeks, patients received treatment for 8 weeks. We observed the percent improvement of the RP attack rate between before and after the 8-week treatment. Ninety-three subjects were randomly assigned. The percent improvement in Group N was 50.1% at 8 weeks after treatment, while it was 31.0% in Group G (p = 0.03). No serious adverse events occurred, and almost adverse events were mild and improved without specific treatment. nifedipine SR was more effective than Ginkgo biloba extract for treatment of primary RP in Korean patients. Both drugs were tolerable with primary RP patients.

Abstract

Introduction Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation (so-called reverse seroconversion) is a rare but known complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, immunosuppressive therapy, or high-dose chemotherapy plus rituximab. This event is linked to a treatment-related fall in titers of antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAb) below the protective threshold level. Case presentation A 77-year-old Korean man diagnosed with primary amyloidosis was started on melphalan/dexamethasone combination therapy. During treatment, laboratory indices of hepatic function suddenly deteriorated, and he developed acute hepatitis through reverse HBV seroconversion, becoming positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and negative for HBsAb. HBV DNA was also detectable in serum to a profound extent. Normal liver function was gradually restored during the course of antiviral therapy (entecavir). Conclusions HBV reactivation may lead to fatal liver disease in a significant percentage of patients. As a result, physicians often screen for HBsAg and HBsAb prior to initiating chemotherapy, advising antiviral treatment in patients seropositive for HBsAg, even in the absence of hepatitis B e antigen. Here, a case of HBV reactivation is described, involving a patient given relatively low-dose chemotherapy (melphalan/dexamethasone) for primary amyloidosis.

Abstract

This article proposes an efficient median filter based algorithm to remove transient noise in a speech signal. The proposed algorithm adopts a modified long-term predictor (LTP) as the pre-processor of the noise reduction process to reduce speech distortion caused by the nonlinear nature of the median filter. This article shows that the LTP analysis does not modify to the characteristic of transient noise during the speech modeling process. Oppositely, if a short-term linear prediction (STP) filter is employed as a pre-processor, the enhanced output includes residual noise because the STP analysis and synthesis process keeps and restores transient noise components. To minimize residual noise and speech distortion after the transient noise reduction, a modified LTP method is proposed which estimates the characteristic of speech more accurately. By ignoring transient noise presence regions in the pitch lag detection step, the modified LTP successfully avoids being affected by transient noise. A backward pitch prediction algorithm is also adopted to reduce speech distortion in the onset regions. Experimental results verify that the proposed system efficiently eliminates transient noise while preserving desired speech signal.

Abstract

The production of prompt D$_s^+$ mesons was measured for the first time in collisions of heavy nuclei with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis was performed on a data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, of 2.76 TeV in two different centrality classes, namely 0-10% and 20-50%. D$_s^+$ mesons and their antiparticles were reconstructed at mid-rapidity from their hadronic decay channel D$_s^+\rightarrow\phi\pi^+$, with $\phi\rightarrow$K$^-$K$^+$, in the transverse momentum intervals $4< p_{\rm T}

Abstract

Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequently detected in deceased donors (DDs), and it could be associated with adverse clinical outcomes in corresponding kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). In this regard, we sought to identify which criteria is better between the KDIGO and AKIN criteria for the diagnosis of AKI in DDs in the prediction of clinical outcomes after kidney transplantation (KT). Methods Two hundred eighty-five cases of deceased donor kidney transplantation (DDKT) were included. We divided them into three groups; the non-AKI by both KDIGO and AKIN criteria group (n = 120), the AKI by KDIGO only group (n = 61), and the AKI by both criteria group (n = 104) according to the diagnosis of AKI using the KDIGO and AKIN criteria in the corresponding 205 DDs. We compared the development of delayed graft function (DGF), the change in allograft function, the allograft survival among the three groups. Results The incidence of DGF was significantly higher in the AKI by KDIGO only and the AKI by both criteria groups than in the non-AKI by both criteria group (P 0.05). Abstract

Background Reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a powerful method for the analysis of gene expression. Target gene expression levels are usually normalized to a consistently expressed reference gene also known as internal standard, in the same sample. However, much effort has not been expended thus far in the search for reference genes suitable for the study of stomach cancer using RT-qPCR, although selection of optimal reference genes is critical for interpretation of results. Methods We assessed the suitability of six possible reference genes, beta-actin (ACTB), glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), hypoxanthine phosphoribosyl transferase 1 (HPRT1), beta-2-microglobulin (B2M), ribosomal subunit L29 (RPL29) and 18S ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) in 20 normal and tumor stomach tissue pairs of stomach cancer patients and 6 stomach cancer cell lines, by RT-qPCR. Employing expression stability analyses using NormFinder and geNorm algorithms we determined the order of performance of these reference genes and their variation values. Results This RT-qPCR study showed that there are statistically significant (p < 0.05) differences in the expression levels of HPRT1 and 18S rRNA in 'normal-' versus 'tumor stomach tissues'. The stability analyses by geNorm suggest B2M-GAPDH, as best reference gene combination for 'stomach cancer cell lines'; RPL29-HPRT1, for 'all stomach tissues'; and ACTB-18S rRNA, for 'all stomach cell lines and tissues'. NormFinder also identified B2M as the best reference gene for 'stomach cancer cell lines', RPL29-B2M for 'all stomach tissues', and 18S rRNA-ACTB for 'all stomach cell lines and tissues'. The comparisons of normalized expression of the target gene, GPNMB, showed different interpretation of target gene expression depend on best single reference gene or combination. Conclusion This study validated RPL29 and RPL29-B2M as the best single reference genes and combination, for RT-qPCR analysis of 'all stomach tissues', and B2M and B2M-GAPDH as the best single reference gene and combination, for 'stomach cancer cell lines'. Use of these validated reference genes should provide more exact interpretation of differential gene expressions at transcription level in stomach cancer.

Abstract

We present a measurement of inclusive J/ ψ production in p-Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ TeV as a function of the centrality of the collision, as estimated from the energy deposited in the Zero Degree Calorimeters. The measurement is performed with the ALICE detector down to zero transverse momentum, p T , in the backward (−4 . 46 < y cms < −2 . 96) and forward (2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53) rapidity intervals in the dimuon decay channel and in the mid-rapidity region (−1 . 37 < y cms < 0 . 43) in the dielectron decay channel. The backward and forward rapidity intervals correspond to the Pb-going and p-going direction, respectively. The p T -differential J /ψ production cross section at backward and forward rapidity is measured for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average p T and p T2 values. The nuclear modification factor is presented as a function of centrality for the three rapidity intervals, and as a function of p T for several centrality classes at backward and forward rapidity. At mid- and forward rapidity, the J /ψ yield is suppressed up to 40% compared to that in pp interactions scaled by the number of binary collisions. The degree of suppression increases towards central p-Pb collisions at forward rapidity, and with decreasing p T of the J /ψ . At backward rapidity, the nuclear modification factor is compatible with unity within the total uncertainties, with an increasing trend from peripheral to central p-Pb collisions.

Abstract

The elliptic, triangular, quadrangular and pentagonal anisotropic flow coefficients for π ± , K ± and p + p ¯ $$ \mathrm{p}+\overline{\mathrm{p}} $$ in Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 2.76 $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76 $$ TeV were measured with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results were obtained with the Scalar Product method, correlating the identified hadrons with reference particles from a different pseudorapidity region. Effects not related to the common event symmetry planes (non-flow) were estimated using correlations in pp collisions and were subtracted from the measurement. The obtained flow coefficients exhibit a clear mass ordering for transverse momentum ( p T ) values below ≈ 3 GeV/ c . In the intermediate p T region (3 < p T < 6 GeV/ c ), particles group at an approximate level according to the number of constituent quarks, suggesting that coalescence might be the relevant particle production mechanism in this region. The results for p T < 3 GeV/ c are described fairly well by a hydrodynamical model (iEBE-VISHNU) that uses initial conditions generated by A Multi-Phase Transport model (AMPT) and describes the expansion of the fireball using a value of 0.08 for the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density ( η/s ), coupled to a hadronic cascade model (UrQMD). Finally, expectations from AMPT alone fail to quantitatively describe the measurements for all harmonics throughout the measured transverse momentum region. However, the comparison to the AMPT model highlights the importance of the late hadronic rescattering stage to the development of the observed mass ordering at low values of p T and of coalescence as a particle production mechanism for the particle type grouping at intermediate values of p T for all harmonics.

Abstract

Background Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), one of the major catechins in green tea, is a potential chemopreventive agent for various cancers. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of EGCG on the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) and tumor suppression. Methods Cell colony formation was evaluated by a soft agar assay. Transcriptional activity of HSP70 and HSP90 was determined by luciferase reporter assay. An EGCG-HSPs complex was prepared using EGCG attached to the cyanogen bromide (CNBr)-activated Sepharose 4B. In vivo effect of EGCG on tumor growth was examined in a xenograft model. Results Treatment with EGCG decreased cell proliferation and colony formation of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. EGCG specifically inhibited the expression of HSP70 and HSP90 by inhibiting the promoter activity of HSP70 and HSP90. Pretreatment with EGCG increased the stress sensitivity of MCF-7 cells upon heat shock (44°C for 1 h) or oxidative stress (H2O2, 500 μM for 24 h). Moreover, treatment with EGCG (10 mg/kg) in a xenograft model resulted in delayed tumor incidence and reduced tumor size, as well as the inhibition of HSP70 and HSP90 expression. Conclusions Overall, these findings demonstrate that HSP70 and HSP90 are potent molecular targets of EGCG and suggest EGCG as a drug candidate for the treatment of human cancer.

Abstract

Background Pristane-treated mice chronically produce high levels of anti-ribonucleoprotein/Smith (anti-Sm/RNP) and other lupus autoantibodies. The present study addressed how these autoantibody levels are maintained over time. Methods Lupus was induced in BALB/c mice using pristane. Naïve B cells, switched memory B cells, switched plasmablasts, and plasma cells were flow-sorted and total IgG and anti-U1A (RNP) autoantibodies were determined with ELISA. Results B cells with a switched “memory-like” (CD19+CD138−IgM−IgD−) (sMB) phenotype were increased in pristane-treated mice and expressed higher levels of Toll like receptor 7 (Tlr7) than cells with this phenotype from untreated mice. Flow-sorted sMB cells from pristane-treated mice did not secrete IgG spontaneously, but were hyper-responsive to both synthetic (R848) and natural (apoptotic cells) TLR7 ligands, resulting in increased IgG production in vitro. The flow-sorted sMB cells also could be driven by R848 to produce IgG anti-U1A autoantibodies. Production of IgG was strongly inhibited by both JSH-23 and SB203580, suggesting that the canonical NFκB and p38 MAPK pathways, respectively, contribute to the TLR7 ligand hyper-responsiveness of sMB from pristane-treated mice. Conclusions The switched memory B cell subset from pristane-treated mice is expanded and shows an increased propensity to undergo terminal (plasma cell) differentiation in response to synthetic and natural TLR7 ligands. The data suggest that the decreased clearance of apoptotic cells characteristic of pristane-treated mice might help maintain high serum levels of anti-RNP/Sm autoantibodies. Abstract

Background The clinical outcomes of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are poor in patients with renal insufficiency. This study investigated changes in the likelihood that patients received optimal medical care throughout the entire process of myocardial infarction management, on the basis of their glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Methods This study analyzed 7,679 patients (age, 63 ± 13 years; men 73.6%) who had STEMI and were enrolled in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR) from November 2005 to August 2008. The study subjects were divided into 5 groups corresponding to strata used to define chronic kidney disease stages. Results Patients with lower GFR were less likely to present with typical chest pain. The average symptom-to-door time, door-to-balloon time, and symptom-to-balloon time were longer with lower GFR than higher GFR. Primary reperfusion therapy was performed less frequently and the results of reperfusion therapy were poorer in patients with renal insufficiency; these patients were less likely to receive adjunctive medical treatment, such as treatment with aspirin, clopidogrel, β-blocker, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor/angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB), or statin, during hospitalization and at discharge. Patients who received less intense medical therapy had worse clinical outcomes than those who received more intense medical therapy. Conclusions Patients with STEMI and renal insufficiency had less chance of receiving optimal medical care throughout the entire process of MI management, which may contribute to worse outcomes in these patients.

Abstract

Background Although it is known that coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) offers highly negative predictive value to exclude obstructive coronary lesions, the plaque pattern on CCTA has not been fully understood. The purpose of this study was to explore the difference of the plaque patterns on CCTA and to assess the cardiovascular risks in healthy subjects. Methods A total of 3914 subjects (mean age: 55 ± 10 years, M : F = 2649 : 1265) who underwent CCTA for health check-up between January 2009 and December 2012 were enrolled. According to coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and plaque pattern on CCTA, subjects were categorized into four groups (group 1: normal; group 2: “non-calcified” plaque; group 3: “calcified” plaque; group 4: mixed plaque). We analyzed cardiovascular risks and Framingham risk score (FRS) among the groups. Results The incidence of each group was group 1 in 55.0% (2152/3914), group 2 in 5.1% (200/3914), group 3 in 8.2% (319/3914), and group 4 in 7.2% (280/3914), respectively. There was no difference of FRS among the groups (6.4 ± 6.4%; 6.5 ± 4.6%; 8.2 ± 5.8%; 7.7 ± 5.7% p = 0.086). In multivariate analysis, HbA1c (OR = 2.285; 95%CI = 1.029 - 5.071; p = 0.042) in group 2; age (OR = 1.115; 95%CI = 1.034 - 1.202; p = 0.005) and smoking status (OR = 3.386; 95%CI = 1.124 - 10.202; p = 0.030) in group 3; and age (OR = 1.054; 95%CI = 1.011 - 1.099; p = 0.014) and hypertension (OR = 3.087; 95%CI = 1.536 - 6.202; p = 0.001) in group 4 were independent factors. Conclusions Our data suggest that more individualized therapy for reduction of cardiovascular risks associated with plaque pattern on CCTA could be considered in healthy subjects.
