Aim: The urban population increases by about 60 million people/year. Urbanization, unhealthy lifestyle and aging of the population are reflected in a constant growth in the prevalence of diabetes. In 2014, Steno Diabetes Centre in Copenhagen, University College London and Novo Nordisk, launched the Cities Changing Diabetes® program with the aim of creating a unified movement that would stimulate policy-makers to prioritize urban diabetes. Methods: The socio-demographic data derive from (1) ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics of Italy), (2) ATS Metropolitan City of Milan, (3) ATS Val Padana-Cremona, (4) ATS Insubria-Varese, (5) The unemployment rates of the various municipalities have been extrapolated from an ISTAT-MEF elaboration published by Sole 24 Ore journal. Results: In the different sanitary districts of the Metropolitan City of Milan, a strong linear correlation was found between the prevalence of diabetes and the prevalence of heart disease (R = 0.695, p < 0.001), as well as between the prevalence of diabetes and of nephropathies (R = 0.316, p < 0.001). The analysis concerning the province of Cremona showed a fair correlation between the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease (R = 0.658, p < 0.001). Even for the municipalities of Varese, the analysis documented a good correlation between the prevalence of diabetes and heart disease (R = 0.419, p < 0.001), but not between diabetes and nephropathies. Conclusions: Interesting differences in the relationship of diabetes prevalence with several diseases and socio-demographic factors have been found when comparing the metropolitan City of Milan with two smaller size cities as Varese and Cremona. In Piemonte (north-western Italy), an intense extraction activity of ornamental stones widely used for historical buildings, developed throughout centuries. This is due to the wide geodiversity of the region, characterised by mostly metamorphic and magmatic rocks in the Western Alps and by terrigenous and carbonate sedimentary rocks in the Alps-Apennines syn-orogenic basins. The work presents the description and classification of the main Piemonte ornamental stones, referring to a simplified lithological Map Legend. To enhance the remarkable historical and contemporary stone heritage of the region a database (DB) was developed addressing a proper cataloguing of the ornamental stones and related quarries. The classified instances have been referred to the geologic units of a regional-scale, interactive geological map, in which each ornamental stone was attributed to few geo-lithological classes. The map was developed as a WebGIS service hosted on a geoportal () that allows interactive querying and download of the DB information, regarding the main rock types and the corresponding quarries, as well as their historical-architectural uses, to underline their value as witness of cultural heritage. The WebGIS service is progressively fed by new data, in order to become a relevant source of information for those working in the field of cultural heritage and geo-environmental sciences. Background: Longer length of hospital stay (LOS) negatively affects the organizational efficiency of public health systems and both clinical and functional aspects of older patients. Data on the effects of transitional care programs based on multicomponent interventions to reduce LOS of older patients are scarce and controversial. Aims: The PRO‐HOME study aimed to assess the efficacy in reducing LOS of a transitional care program involving a multicomponent intervention inside a technologically monitored in‐hospital discharge facility. Methods: This is a Randomized Clinical Trial on 60 patients (≥65 years), deemed stable and dischargeable from the Acute Geriatrics Unit, equally assigned to the Control Group (CG) or Intervention Group (IG). The latter underwent a multicomponent intervention including lifestyle educational program, cognitive and physical training. At baseline, multidimensional frailty according to the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), and Health‐Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) were assessed in both groups, along with physical capacities for the IG. Enrolled subjects were evaluated after 6 months of follow‐up to assess multidimensional frailty, HRQOL, and re‐hospitalization, institutionalization, and death rates. Results: The IG showed a significant 2‐day reduction in LOS (median days IG = 2 (2–3) vs. CG = 4 (3–6); p < 0.001) and an improvement in multidimensional frailty at 6 months compared to CG (median score IG = 0.25(0.25–0.36) vs. CG = 0.38(0.31–0.45); p = 0.040). No differences were found between the two groups in HRQOL, and re‐hospitalization, institutionalization, and death rates. Discussion: Multidimensional frailty is a reversible condition that can be improved by reduced LOS. Purpose: Nondisplaced intracapsular fractures (Garden I/II) are predominantly treated with an internal fixation technique. The purpose of the study is to identify the best rehabilitation protocol after internal fixation with 3 parallel cannulated screws. Methods: All patients operated on from 2016 to 2021 for femoral neck fractures by internal fixation with 3 cannulated screws were enrolled into this prospective study. The population was divided into two groups: Group A (n = 34) who followed a postoperative rehabilitation protocol involving full and immediate loading, and Group B (n = 22) who followed a postoperative rehabilitation protocol involving late full loading (after 30 days). The two groups were compared with each other by mortality rate, postoperative complications and need for re-interventions. Functional outcome and quality of life were assessed at the minimum follow-up of 1 year using the modified Harris Hip Score (HHS) and the Short form health survey (SF-12) questionnaire. Results: Group A showed a lower complication rate (2.9% vs. 18.2%), a lower 1-year mortality rate (5.9% vs. 9.1%), a better perception of mental health status (SF12-MCS 56.2 vs. 51.4, p = 0.03) but a worse perception of one's physical health status (SF12-PCS 48.1 vs. 56.7, p < 0.01). The two groups were also statistically overlapping in terms of the functional outcome achieved after the intervention (HHS was 90.94 in Group A vs. 93.15 in Group B, p = 0.32). Conclusion: Postoperative complications, mortality and revision rate were higher in patients who followed a late-loaded rather than early loaded rehabilitation protocol. Purpose: Particle size distribution (PSD) assessment, which affects all physical, chemical, biological, mineralogical, and geological properties of soil, is crucial for maintaining soil sustainability. It plays a vital role in ensuring appropriate land use, fertilizer management, crop selection, and conservation practices, especially in fragile soils such as those of the North-Western Himalayas. Materials and methods: In this study, the performance of eleven mathematical and three Machine Learning (ML) models used in the past was compared to investigate PSD modeling of different soils from the North-Western Himalayan region, considering that an appropriate model must fit all PSD data. Results and discussion: Our study focuses on the significance of evaluating the goodness of fit in particle size distribution modeling using the coefficient of determination (R2adj = 0.79 to 0.45), the Akaike information criterion (AIC = 67 to 184), and the root mean square error (RMSE = 0.01 to 0.09). The Fredlund, Weibull, and Rosin Rammler models exhibited the best fit for all samples, while the performance of the Gompertz, S-Curve, and Van Genutchen models was poor. Of the three ML models tested, the Random Forest model performed the best (R2 = 0.99), and the SVM model was the lowest (R2 = 0.95). Thus, the PSD of the soil can be best predicted by ML approaches, especially by the Random Forest model. Conclusion: The Fredlund model exhibited the best fit among mathematical models while random forest performed best among the machine learning models. Background: Resilience is a crucial component of successful aging. However, which interventions might increase resilience in older adults is yet unclear. Aims: This study aims to assess the feasibility and the physical and psychological effects of a technology-based multicomponent dance movement intervention that includes physical, cognitive, and sensory activation in older people living in community-dwelling and nursing home. Methods: DanzArTe program consists of four sessions on a weekly basis, using a technological platform that integrates visual and auditory contents in real time. 122 participants (mean age = 76.3 ± 8.8 years, 91 females = 74.6%) from seven nursing homes and community-dwelling subjects were assessed, before and after the intervention, with the Resilience Scale-14 items (RES-14), the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), the Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI-S), and the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8 (CSQ-8). Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests were used for statistical analyses. Results: At baseline significant differences in MPI and RES-14 between community-dwelling and nursing home residents were observed (p < 0.001 for both analyses). After the intervention, resilience significantly increased in total sample (RES-14 mean T1 = 74.6 Vs. T2 = 75.7) and in the nursing home residents (RES-14 mean T1 = 68.1 Vs. T2 = 71.8). All participants showed high overall satisfaction for DanzArTe program (CSQ-8 mean = 23.9 ± 4.4). No differences in MPI and PGWBI-S were observed. Discussion: DanzArTe was a feasible intervention and high appreciated by all older adults. Nursing home residents revealed improvements in resilience after DanzArTe program. Ferric ions can bind strongly with dissolved organic matter (DOM), including humic acids (HA), fulvic acids (FA), and protein-like substances, whereas isolation of Fe-DOM precipitates (Fe-DOMP) and their biochemical characteristics remain unclear. In this work FeCl3 was used to isolate DOM components from various sources, including river, lake, soil, cow dung, and standard tryptophan and tyrosine, through precipitation at pH 7.5–8.5. The Fe-DOMP contribute to total DOM by approximately 38.6–93.8% of FA, 76.2% of HA and 25.0–30.4% of tryptophan and tyrosine, whilst fluorescence spectra allowed to monitor/discriminate the various DOM fractions in the samples. The relative intensity of the main infrared peaks such as 3406‒3383 cm−1 (aromatic OH), 1689‒1635 cm−1 (‒COOH), 1523–1504 cm−1 (amide) and 1176–1033 cm−1 (‒S=O) show either to decline or disappear in Fe‒DOMP. These results suggest the occurrence of Fe bonds with various functional groups of DOM, indicating the formation of π–d electron bonding systems of different strengths in Fe‒DOMP. The novel method used for isolation of Fe-DOMP shows promising in opening a new frontier both at laboratory and industrial purposes. Furthermore, results obtained may provide a better understanding of metal–organic complexes involved in the regulation of the long-term stabilization/sequestration of DOM in soils and waters. A maternal vaccine to protect neonates against Group B Streptococcus invasive infection is an unmet medical need. Such a vaccine should ideally be offered during the third trimester of pregnancy and induce strong immune responses after a single dose to maximize the time for placental transfer of protective antibodies. A key target antigen is the capsular polysaccharide, an anti-phagocytic virulence factor that elicits protective antibodies when conjugated to carrier proteins. The most prevalent polysaccharide serotypes conjugated to tetanus or diphtheria toxoids have been tested in humans as monovalent and multivalent formulations, showing excellent safety profiles and immunogenicity. However, responses were suboptimal in unprimed individuals after a single shot, the ideal schedule for vaccination during the third trimester of pregnancy. In the present study, we obtained and optimized self-assembling virus-like particles conjugated to Group B Streptococcus capsular polysaccharides. Purpose: This study focused on a comparison of mid-term clinical, functional and radiographic outcomes of adults treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), radial head prosthesis (RHP) and resection (RHR). Methods: The retrospective evaluation concerned 47 surgically treated patients after a mean follow-up of 53 months. All patients were grouped according to the surgical procedure performed: 15 in the RHP group, 16 in the ORIF group and 16 in the RHR group. At the follow-up, outcome assessment was based on radiographs, range of motion (ROM) and functional rating scores. Results: Patients treated by RHR had significantly higher mean age and shorter operation time than other two groups. Compared to ROM, flexion, extension and pronation were significantly worse in patients treated by ORIF than those in the RHP group and the RHR group. Supination was significantly better in the RHP group. However, no statistical differences were observed in functional rating scores among the three groups. Regarding complications, instability was the only cause of revision surgery in the RHP group and the RHR group. On the other hand, the ORIF group revision rate was 50% and secondary displacement was the most frequent cause of failure. Conclusion: The ORIF group did not show good results with greater elbow stiffness and higher revision rate than the other two techniques. Background: During the recent lockdown measures adopted by national authorities to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, many vulnerable older patients with chronic conditions, normally followed in ambulatory setting, needed to be monitored and managed in alternative ways, including telemedicine. Aims: In the framework of a telemedicine program, we aimed to validate and implement a telephone-administered version of the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (TELE-MPI) among community-dwelling older outpatients. Method: From March 9 to May 11, 2020, 131 older patients (82.1 years; 74% females) were interviewed using a telephone-based survey to calculate the TELE-MPI. The standard MPI was performed face-to-face three months apart. The Bland–Altman methodology measured the agreement between the two tools. Multivariate logistic regression models were built to ascertain the prognostic value of TELE-MPI and TELE-MPI classes (low, moderate, or severe risk) on negative outcomes occurring during the lockdown period. Results: Mean MPI and TELE-MPI values were 0.523 and 0.522, respectively. Lower and upper 95% limits of agreement were − 0.122 and + 0.124, respectively, with only 4.6% of observations outside the limits. Each 0.1 increase of TELE-MPI score was significantly correlated with higher incidence of psychiatric disorders [odd ratio (OR): 1.57; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.27, 1.95] and falls (OR: 1.41; 95% CI 1.08, 1.82) in community-dwelling-older adults. Discussion: TELE-MPI showed a strong agreement with the standard MPI and was able to predict psychiatric disorders and falls during lockdown period. The main objective of this study was to provide a preliminary analysis of the meteorite North West Africa (NWA) 12606 recently classified as ureilite, which was found in 2018 in Morocco, to unveil the possible presence of diamonds. The preliminary analysis of the surface of a meteorite fragment by scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS) and optical microscopy has shown that it mainly consisted of olivine, minor pyroxene and carbon phases possibly including carbon in the form of diamonds. The results achieved are preliminary to a further deeper study of this meteorite as the diamond origin in ureilites is still an open issue debated among the scientific community due to its significant implications for the sizes of early Solar System bodies. Purpose: Aims of the present study were to investigate a wide array of psychological symptoms through validated psychometric tests, before and after 5 weeks of deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) in individuals with obesity, and to identify possible relationships with neuroendocrine parameters. Methods: Forty-five patients with obesity (33 F, 12 M; age 48.8 ± 9.9 years; body wt 97.6 ± 14.2 Kg; BMI 36.2 ± 4.2) were randomized into two groups: 26 received high frequency (HF) dTMS and 19 Sham stimulation for 5 weeks. At baseline and after the 5-week treatment, all patients underwent the following psychometric evaluations: Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait (FCQ-T) and its subscales, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-y1 and STAI-y2), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Hormonal and neuroendocrine markers were assessed at the first and last dTMS session. Results: By adjusting for baseline variables and treatment arms, a significant decrease in body wt and BMI was found in HF group, both with univariate (p = 0.019) and multivariate analyses (p = 0.012). Impulsivity significantly decreased in HF group, both with univariate (p = 0.031) and multivariate analyses (p = 0.011). A positive association between the impulsivity score change and the leptin level variation (p = 0.031) was found. Conclusion: The decrease of impulsivity together with the BMI reduction in individuals with obesity, treated with real stimulation, suggests that impulsivity may be a risk factor for obesity. Treatment with dTMS revealed to be effective in reducing both BMI and impulsivity by enhancing inhibitory capacity of Pre-Frontal Cortex (PFC), and modulating neuroendocrine system, especially leptin. Background: Biological drugs have improved the management of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) despite being associated with important safety issues such as immunogenicity, infections, and malignancies in real-world settings. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the potential of a large Italian multi-database distributed network for use in the postmarketing surveillance of biological drugs, including biosimilars, in patients with IMID. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using 13 Italian regional claims databases during 2010–2019. A tailor-made R-based tool developed for distributed analysis of claims data using a study-specific common data model was customized for this study. We measured the yearly prevalence of biological drug users and the frequency of switches between originator and biosimilars for infliximab, etanercept, and adalimumab separately and stratified them by calendar year and region. We then calculated the cumulative number of users and person-years (PYs) of exposure to individual biological drugs approved for IMIDs. For a number of safety outcomes (e.g., severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-COV-2] infection), we conducted a sample power calculation to estimate the PYs of exposure required to investigate their association with individual biological drugs approved for IMIDs, considering different strengths of association. Results: From a total underlying population of almost 50 million inhabitants from 13 Italian regions, we identified 143,602 (0.3%) biological drug users, with a cumulative exposure of 507,745 PYs during the entire follow-up. The mean age ± standard deviation of biological drug users was 49.3 ± 16.3, with a female-to-male ratio of 1.2. The age-adjusted yearly prevalence of biological drug users increased threefold from 0.7 per 1000 in 2010 to 2.1 per 1000 in 2019. Overall, we identified 40,996 users of biosimilars of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors (i.e., etanercept, adalimumab, and infliximab) in the years 2015–2019. Of these, 46% (N = 18,845) switched at any time between originator and biosimilars or vice versa. To investigate a moderate association (incidence rate ratio 2) between biological drugs approved for IMIDs and safety events of interest, such as optic neuritis (lowest background incidence rate 10.4/100,000 PYs) or severe infection (highest background incidence rate 4312/100,000 PYs), a total of 43,311 PYs and 104 PYs of exposure to individual biological drugs, respectively, would be required. As such, using this network, of 15 individual biological drugs approved for IMIDs, the association with those adverse events could be investigated for four (27%) and 14 (93%), respectively. Conclusion: The VALORE project multi-database network has access to data on more than 140,000 biological drug users (and > 0.5 million PYs) from 13 Italian regions during the years 2010–2019, which will be further expanded with the inclusion of data from other regions and more recent calendar years. Overall, the cumulated amount of person-time of exposure to biological drugs approved for IMIDs provides enough statistical power to investigate weak/moderate associations of almost all individual compounds and the most relevant safety outcomes. Moreover, this network may offer the opportunity to investigate the interchangeability of originator and biosimilars of several TNFα inhibitors in different therapeutic areas in real-world settings. The present study is focused on the development and characterization of innovative cementitious-based composite sensors. In particular, multifunctional cement mortars with enhanced piezoresistive properties are realized by exploiting the concept of confinement of Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in a three-dimensional percolated network through the use of a natural-rubber latex aqueous dispersion. The manufactured cement-based composites were characterized by means of Inelastic Neutron Scattering to assess the hydration reactions and the interactions between natural rubber and the hydrated-cement phases and by Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-Ray diffraction to evaluate the morphological and mineralogical structure, respectively. Piezo-resistive properties to assess electro-mechanical behavior in strain condition are also measured. The results show that the presence of natural rubber latex allows to obtain a three-dimensional rGO/MWCNTs segregate structure which catalyzes the formation of hydrated phases of the cement and increases the piezo-resistive sensitivity of mortar composites, representing a reliable approach in developing innovative mortar-based piezoresistive strain sensors. Foot fractures are common injuries. This retrospective study evaluates their frequency, incidence, treatment and outcomes with emphasis on complex trauma of the foot (CTF), an injury that affects soft tissue as well as bone. From 2005 to 2015, 506 patients with foot fractures were treated at our institution; of these, 27 had CTF. The Zwipp score was applied to diagnose CTF, the Gustilo–Anderson classification to grade open fractures and the Tscherne classification to grade closed fractures. Twelve months after the trauma, 20 CTF patients underwent the final X-ray assessment and clinical evaluation with the Visual Analogue Scale Foot and Ankle (VASFA), the Foot Function Index (FFI) and the 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12). Data were analyzed with the Spearman rank correlation test. The forefoot was the most frequently involved compartment both in patients with foot fracture and in those with CTF. At 12-month follow-up, the CTF patients showed a VASFA score of 51.5, an FFI of 47.5 and SF-12 scores of 37.9 (physical component summary) and 45.2 (mental component summary). The VASFA score and the FFI showed a significant correlation (rs = 0.84; p = 0.001). CTF is the cause of considerable residual disability and deeply affects quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The economic recognition of disability is of importance in daily practice, but the tools used in older people are still limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) to identify frail older subjects to be submitted to civil invalidity application for disability benefits including Attendance Allowance (AA) indemnity, Carer's Leave (Law 104) and/or Parking Card for people with disabilities. Methods: From March 2018 to January 2019, 80 older people were included. The MPI was calculated from comprehensive geriatric assessment information including eight different domains. Civil benefits included attendance allowance (AA) indemnity by the Local Medico-Legal Committee (MLC-NHS) and by the National Institute of Social Security Committee (INPS), Carer's Leave (Law 104), and Parking Card for people with disabilities. Results: MPI values were associated with an increased probability to obtain a 100% civil disability, AA indemnity, Carer's Leave and a parking card for people with disabilities. MPI score showed a very good accuracy in predicting the civil invalidity benefits with a area-under-curve (AUC) of 87.3 (95% CI 80.6–97.4) to predict the release of AA indemnity, 81.3 (95% CI 68.5–91.1) to predict Care's leave and 70.7 (95% CI 59.4–84.7) to predict the Parking Card release. Moreover, data showed that a cut-off score of MPI ≥ 0.75 could identify the 100% of older subjects who successfully obtained the indemnity release. The Amazonian biome has a fundamental role in the global climate change scenario and the understanding the physicochemical aspect in Amazonian soils is of great importance. The nine horizons constituting a typical Amazonian Spodosol profile were studied by different complementary techniques: X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDX). The XRPD analysis revealed the presence of different minerals along the profile, i.e. quartz from 0 to 214 cm (horizons from A1 to Bhs) and kaolinite from 215 to 290 cm (horizons from Tr to K2). The HR-TEM images and SAED patterns revealed the presence of kaolinite in the horizon A1, which was not detected by XRPD. Application of the Rietveld refinement enabled the quantification of the minerals in each horizon. The SEM–EDX analyses allowed to identifying changes in the horizon surface morphology as a consequence of ongoing deformation. A significant decrease of particle sizes and a marked variations of their surface features with increasing depth were measured by SEM. Muon tomography is a very promising imaging technique for the control of cargo containers. It takes advantage of cosmic muons and their interaction mechanisms to reconstruct images of the volume traversed by these particles. In the present work, the imaging performance of a novel muon tomography scanner based on resistive plate chambers detectors is investigated. By means of several Monte Carlo simulations, some imaging parameters are evaluated. The results in terms of spatial resolution, field-of-view and volume and material recognition make the presented scanner and its geometry suitable for muon tomography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a characterization of a series of barite-enriched concrete samples at the atomic scale using neutron-based techniques. In particular, neutron transmission measurements provide the macroscopic cross section (also known as neutron removal cross section) as a function of the incident neutron energy in the range 1 meV–1 keV. In this range, where fewer experimental investigations are available in the literature, the cross section is dominated by the scattering events from hydrogen, as opposed to the fast-neutron region (MeV-energy neutrons) where capture events by Ba are more important. Moreover, below 1 eV, the cross section depends on the molecular or crystal structure of the components. For each sample, the amounts of barium and hydrogen are provided by neutron resonance capture analysis and deep inelastic neutron scattering, respectively. We find that the amounts of barium and hydrogen are correlated, with a lower amount of hydrogen in the samples with more barium, likely because of the absence of some calcium-silicon-hydrate structures, whose formation is inhibited by the presence of barite. Moreover, we quantify the non-negligible contribution to the neutron macroscopic cross section arising from water molecules loosely bound in concrete. This contribution makes the shielding performance of concrete dependent upon the humidity and temperature conditions affecting the installation. Rapid screening and low-cost diagnosis play a crucial role in choosing the correct course of intervention when dealing with highly infectious pathogens. This is especially important if the disease-causing agent has no effective treatment, such as the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, and shows no or similar symptoms to other common infections. Here, we report a disposable silicon-based integrated Point-of-Need transducer (TriSilix) for real-time quantitative detection of pathogen-specific sequences of nucleic acids. TriSilix can be produced at wafer-scale in a standard laboratory (37 chips of 10 × 10 × 0.65 mm in size can be produced in 7 h, costing ~0.35 USD per device). We are able to quantitatively detect a 563 bp fragment of genomic DNA of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis through real-time PCR with a limit-of-detection of 20 fg, equivalent to a single bacterium, at the 35th cycle. Using TriSilix, we also detect the cDNA from SARS-CoV-2 (1 pg) with high specificity against SARS-CoV (2003). Designing efficient, rapid and low-cost diagnostic technologies targeting nucleic acids remains a challenge. The European Spallation Source is being built in Lund, Sweden and it's planned to be the brightest pulsed spallation source for thermal and cold neutrons (<1 eV). Neutrons will be produced by a 2 GeV accelerated proton beam hitting a tungsten target wheel, then they are moderated by liquid hydrogen and water based moderator system and delivered to 42 beam-ports. Neutrons are transported via reflections to a set of instruments connected to the beam-ports through neutron guides. Undesired fast neutrons can cause a radiation safety issue, since they can find their way down the beam-lines and thus generate a large dose. A designed shielding structure is needed to minimize such effect during the beam at the target phase. The tests commonly used to determine seed vigor are often laborious and time-consuming; thus, rapid methods are highly required for identifying high-vigor seeds among different batches. In this paper, we describe a novel approach able to distinguishing among batches of soybean seeds of different physiological quality based on their nutrient content measured by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) assisted by multivariate analysis and machine learning algorithms. These include principal component analysis (PCA), support vector machine learning (SVM), linear and quadratic discriminant analyses (LDA and QDA), and nearest neighbor methods (KNN). A total of 92 measurements, 46 collected from batches marketed as low-vigor seeds and 46 as high-vigor seeds, were analyzed. The SVM method performed the best in discriminating among the batches. In particular, the quadratic SVM function could classify correctly 100% of the high-vigor samples and 97.8% of the low-vigor samples, whereas the cubic function yielded the opposite result; i.e., 97.8% of the high-vigor samples and 100% of the low-vigor samples were classified correctly. The best LIBS spectral region for the analysis was in the range of 350–450 nm, with calcium being the main distinguishing element. Thus, the LIBS technique combined with machine learning classification methods showed a promising potential for classifying soybean seed batches according to their physiological quality. Background: Impaired physical performance is common in older adults and has been identified as a major risk factor for falls. To date, there are no conclusive data on the impairment of balance parameters in older subjects with different levels of physical performance. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between different grades of physical performance, as assessed by the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and the multidimensional balance control parameters, as measured by means of a robotic system, in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: This study enrolled subjects aged ≥ 65 years. Balance parameters were assessed by the hunova robot in static and dynamic (unstable and perturbating) conditions, in both standing and seated positions and with the eyes open/closed. Results: The study population consisted of 96 subjects (62 females, mean age 77.2 ± 6.5 years). According to their SPPB scores, subjects were separated into poor performers (SPPB < 8, n = 29), intermediate performers (SPPB = 8–9, n = 29) and good performers (SPPB > 9, n = 38). Poor performers displayed significantly worse balance control, showing impaired trunk control in most of the standing and sitting balance tests, especially in dynamic (both with unstable and perturbating platform/seat) conditions. Conclusions: For the first time, multidimensional balance parameters, as detected by the hunova robotic system, were significantly correlated with SPPB functional performances in community-dwelling older subjects. Background: Pathological scars are unattractive and may significantly impair the patient's quality of life. Current treatments provide inconsistent results, and none may be regarded as definitive. Recently, an auto-cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) formulation, IAL-SYSTEM ACP, featuring a long residence time and an enhanced safety profile, has been successfully used to prevent surgical adhesions, treat tendon lesions and rejuvenate the face and the décolletage. This study aims to preliminarily investigate whether IAL-SYSTEM ACP may also be effective in treating pathological scars resulting from burns, trauma or iatrogenic causes. Methods: Patients presenting one pathological scar were prospectively recruited and treated with two IAL-SYSTEM ACP injections carried out two weeks apart. Scar improvement was measured comparing the patient and observer scar assessment scale (POSAS) scores collected before treatment (T0) and 90 days after the second injection (T90) using nonparametric tests. The effect of age and scar type over score variation was investigated through quantile regression analysis.Results: Forty-one patients, 10 women and 31 men (median age, 34 years) were recruited. No patient dropped out, and no significant adverse event was observed. At T90, the median observer total score decreased by 11 units (− 77.5%) and the median patient total score decreased by 15 units (− 73.7%). The difference was significant (p < 0.001) in both cases. Traumatic injuries and young patient's age were the most significant predictors of a positive treatment outcome.Conclusions: Treatment of pathological scars by two IAL-SYSTEM ACP injections, carried out two weeks apart, may provide significant clinical benefits. Summary: Water continues to be the focus of a considerable number of experimental and theoretical investigations because of the important role it plays in many phenomena in fundamental and applied science, as well as its biological and technological importance. The ability of water to create a three-dimensional network of hydrogen bonds makes this molecule uniquely versatile. Atoms in water display characteristic mean kinetic energies well above the thermodynamic temperature of the system, as opposed to the celebrated case of a perfect gas of non-interacting particles. Nuclear quantum effects have a profound influence on the structure and dynamics of hydrogen-bonded systems, such as water. These effects are reflected in the underlying nuclear momentum distributions, experimentally accessible using electron-volt neutron spectroscopy at pulsed spallation neutron sources, with a technique known as deep inelastic neutron scattering. In this topical review, the technique is discussed along with the conceptual framework and several case studies that bring to the fore the role of nuclear quantum effects in describing water. These state-of-the-art measurements are also benchmarked against theoretical predictions using path-integral molecular dynamics. Purpose: The objective of this review is to survey critically the results obtained by the application of laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to the evaluation of the humification degree (HD) of soil organic matter (SOM) directly in untreated, intact whole soils.Materials and methods: A large number of soils of various origin and nature, either native or under various cultivations, land use, and management, at various depths, have been studied to evaluate the HD of their SOM directly in intact whole samples. The LIFS spectra were obtained by either a bench or a portable argon laser apparatus that emits UV-VIS light of high power, whereas the LIBS spectra were obtained using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm.Results and discussion: The close correlations found by comparing HLIF values of whole soil samples with values of earlier proposed humification indexes confirmed the applicability of LIFS to assess the HD of SOM in whole soils. The high correlation found between HDLIBS values and HLIF values showed the promising potential of LIBS for the evaluation HD of SOM.Conclusions: The LIFS technique shows to be a valuable alternative to evaluate the HD of SOM by probing directly the whole solid soil sample, thus avoiding the use of any previous chemical and/or physical treatments or separation procedures of SOM from the mineral soil matrix. A number of phosphate rocks and organomineral P fertilizers was analyzed comparatively by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in both single- and double-pulse modes associated with two chemometric methods, i.e., principal components analysis (PCA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR). PCA was demonstrated to be a valuable method for the identification of spectral differences between similar samples with only minor compositional differences. The raw and normalized LIBS spectra were able to provide effective identification and discrimination at a 95% confidence level and in good agreement with the reference concentrations. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate Ranolazine action on skeletal muscle differentiation and mitochondrial oxidative phenomena. Ranolazine, an antianginal drug, which acts blocking the late INaL current, was shown to lower hemoglobin A1c in patients with diabetes. In the present study, we hypothesized an action of Ranolazine on skeletal muscle cells regeneration and oxidative process, leading to a reduction of insulin resistance. Methods: 10 μM Ranolazine was added to C2C12 murine myoblastic cells during proliferation, differentiation and newly formed myotubes. Results: Ranolazine promoted the development of a specific myogenic phenotype: increasing the expression of myogenic regulator factors and inhibiting cell cycle progression factor (p21). Ranolazine stimulated calcium signaling (calmodulin-dependent kinases) and reduced reactive oxygen species levels. Furthermore, Ranolazine maintained mitochondrial homeostasis. During the differentiation phase, Ranolazine promoted myotubes formation. Ranolazine did not modify kinases involved in skeletal muscle differentiation and glucose uptake (extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 and AKT pathways), but activated calcium signaling pathways. During proliferation, Ranolazine did not modify the number of mitochondria while decreasing osteopontin protein levels. Lastly, neo-formed myotubes treated with Ranolazine showed typical hypertrophic phenotype. Conclusion: In conclusion, our results indicate that Ranolazine stimulates myogenesis and reduces a pro-oxidant inflammation/oxidative condition, activating a calcium signaling pathway. The study of the degradation mechanisms of materials constituting historical buildings is very relevant in the context of cultural heritage preservation. In this work, a limestone sample collected from the masonry blocks of the entrance gate of historic Castello Svevo, Bari, Italy, was subjected to depth profile elemental analysis of the ablated black crust and the underlying limestone by double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. The specific elemental components were identified and their concentrations along the sample profile analyzed, so allowing to identify the boundary between the weathered and unaltered rock. The laser-induced plasma stability, i.e., the absence of parameter changes during ablation, was verified to be constant and not to affect the elemental peak sizes during the entire depth analysis process when the plasma is confined in the ablation crater. The frequency of definitive childlessness in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be higher than in the general population. MS may also affect decisions on the delivery procedure and on breast-feeding issues. Aim of the study was to assess the frequency of childlessness and its possible causes, the proportion of cesarean deliveries (CD), and the frequency of breast-feeding in patients and controls who have reached the end of their reproductive period. Female MS patients (>43 years) and controls (>45 years) filled out a questionnaire. We enrolled 303 patients and 500 controls. MS was associated with a higher frequency of childlessness (22 vs 13%) and less patients were in a stable relationship (83 vs 89%). There was no difference in the reported rates of infertility and miscarriages, while elective abortions were more frequent in patients (20 vs 12%). MS did not significantly affect the frequency of CD or of breast-feeding. MS-related reasons for childlessness, reported by 16% of childless patients, included disability/fear of future disability, fear of genetically transmitting MS, fear of not starting/discontinuing treatments, and discouragement by physician. Definitive childlessness is more frequent in women with MS compared to controls. A portion of voluntary childlessness may be avoided through correct/tailored information to patients. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a technique increasingly used to perform fast semi-quantitative multi-elemental analyses of various materials without any complex sample preparation, being also suitable for in situ analyses. Few studies have been performed to understand the influence of laser wavelength on LIBS analytical performance on environmental samples. The main goal of this study was to perform a comparative elemental analysis of a number of soils, citrus leaves, and synthetic solid matrices using two different wavelengths, i.e., 532 and 1064 nm of Nd:YAG lasers, and a spectrometer coupled to a non-intensified charge-coupled device camera as the detection system. The emission lines with higher upper energy level, i.e., C I-193.03 (7.685 eV) and Si I-212.41 nm (6.616 eV), were more intense when using the 532 nm than the 1064 nm laser light, whereas the opposite occurred for elements with lower upper energy level, i.e., Ti I-336.12 nm (3.716 eV) and Fe I-368.75 nm (4.220 eV). The observed increase in LIBS signal between the two wavelengths is about 30-50%. The relationship between the line emission intensities and the used excitation wavelengths were associated to the upper level energy of the element. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sorption and biodegradation are the main mechanisms for the removal of endocrine disruptor compounds (EDs) from both solid and liquid matrices. There are recent evidences about the capacity of white-rot fungi to decontaminate water systems from phenolic EDs by means of their ligninolytic enzymes. Most of the available studies report the removal of EDs by biodegradation or adsorption separately. This study assessed the simultaneous removal of five EDs-the xenoestrogens bisphenol A (BPA), ethynilestradiol (EE2), and 4-n-nonylphenol (NP), and the herbicide linuron and the insecticide dimethoate-from a municipal landfill leachate (MLL) using a combined sorption/bioremoval approach. The adsorption matrices used were potato dextrose agar alone or added with each of the following adsorbent materials: ground almond shells, a coffee compost, a coconut fiber, and a river sediment. These matrices were either not inoculated or inoculated with the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus and superimposed on the MLL. The residual amount of each ED in the MLL was quantified after 4, 7, 12, and 20 days by HPLC analysis and UV detection. Preliminary experiments showed that (1) all EDs did not degrade significantly in the untreated MLL for at least 28 days, (2) the mycelial growth of P. ostreatus was largely stimulated by components of the MLL, and (3) the enrichment of potato dextrose agar with any adsorbent material favored the fungal growth for 8 days after inoculation. A prompt relevant disappearance of EDs in the MLL occurred both without and, especially, with fungal activity, with the only exception of the very water soluble dimethoate that was poorly adsorbed and possibly degraded only during the first few days of experiments. An almost complete removal of phenolic EDs, especially EE2 and NP, occurred after 20 days or much earlier and was generally enhanced by the adsorbent materials used. Data obtained indicated that both adsorption and biodegradation mechanisms contribute significantly to MLL decontamination from the EDs studied and that the efficacy of the methodology adopted is directly related to the hydrophobicity of the contaminant. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate comparatively the main chemical and physico-chemical properties of the humic acid (HA) fraction of three different composts and to evaluate the bioactive effects of these HAs on the germination and early growth of four populations of switchgrass. Materials and methods: Three compost HAs isolated from a green compost (HA), a mixed compost (HA), and a coffee compost (HA) were characterized for some chemical and physico-chemical properties, such as ash content, elemental composition, total acidity, carboxylic and phenolic OH group contents, E/E ratio, Fourier Transform infrared (FT IR), and fluorescence spectroscopies. In subsequent experiments conducted in vitro in a climatic chamber under controlled conditions, the bioactive effects of the three HAs at concentrations of 10, 50, and 200 mg L were tested on the germination and early growth of four switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L.) populations, the octaploids Shelter, Shawnee and Dacotah, and the tetraploid Alamo. Results and discussion: The ash content and the E/E ratio were, respectively, much higher or slightly higher for HA than for the other two HAs. HA showed the lowest C and H contents and the highest O content, whereas HA had the highest N content. The total acidity and phenolic OH group content followed the order: HA > HA > HA. The fluorescence analysis of the three HAs evidenced a common fluorophore unit possibly associated to simple aromatic structures, such as phenolic-like, hydroxy-substituted benzoic and cinnamic acid derivatives. The FT IR spectra of all HA samples indicated the presence of aromatic phenolic structures. Significant beneficial effects were produced by any HA on switchgrass germination and early growth as a function of the population tested and the HA dose. Conclusions: Results of this study demonstrated that the addition of compost HAs to the germination medium of four switchgrass populations positively influenced the germination process and the growth of primary root and shoot. Significant correlations were found between HA bioactivity and some HA properties. Gem-quality alexandrite, hiddenite and kunzite, elbaite and topaz minerals were characterized through a multi-methodological investigation based on EMPA-WDS, LA-ICP-MS, and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). With respect to the others, the latter technique enables a simultaneous multi-elemental composition without any sample preparation and the detection of light elements, such as Li, Be and B. The criteria for the choice of minerals were: (a) the presence of chromophore elements in minor contents and/or as traces; (b) the presence of light lithophile elements (Li, Be and B); (c) different crystal chemistry complexity. The results show that LIBS can be employed in mineralogical studies for the identification and characterization of minerals, and as a fast screening method to determine the chemical composition, including the chromophore and light lithophile elements. Crystallization is a fundamental and ubiquitous process much studied over the centuries. But although the crystallization of atoms is fairly well understood, it remains challenging to predict reliably the outcome of molecular crystallization processes that are complicated by various molecular interactions and solvent involvement. This difficulty also applies to nanoparticles: high-quality three-dimensional crystals are mostly produced using drying and sedimentation techniques that are often impossible to rationalize and control to give a desired crystal symmetry, lattice spacing and habit (crystal shape). In principle, DNA-mediated assembly of nanoparticles offers an ideal opportunity for studying nanoparticle crystallization: a well-defined set of rules have been developed to target desired lattice symmetries and lattice constants, and the occurrence of features such as grain boundaries and twinning in DNA superlattices and traditional crystals comprised of molecular or atomic building blocks suggests that similar principles govern their crystallization. But the presence of charged biomolecules, interparticle spacings of tens of nanometres, and the realization so far of only polycrystalline DNA-interconnected nanoparticle superlattices, all suggest that DNA-guided crystallization may differ from traditional crystal growth. Here we show that very slow cooling, over several days, of solutions of complementary-DNA-modified nanoparticles through the melting temperature of the system gives the thermodynamic product with a specific and uniform crystal habit. We find that our nanoparticle assemblies have the Wulff equilibrium crystal structure that is predicted from theoretical considerations and molecular dynamics simulations, thus establishing that DNA hybridization can direct nanoparticle assembly along a pathway that mimics atomic crystallization. Background and aims: The effect of forest cover distribution and plant litter input on soil organic carbon were analyzed to better understand the dynamics of carbon cycling across ecosystems on the 'Natural Oriented Reserve Bosco delle Pianelle'. Fluorescence spectroscopy represents a very useful tool to characterize soil organic matter properties, since it allows to directly monitor the molecular status of a fluorophore depending on its chemical environment, as well as on its structure, substituents of the aromatic moieties, and molecular weight. Here, fluorescence analysis was performed on humic acids isolated from four litters (HALs) and their underlying soils (HAs) at three depths. Methods: All samples were collected from a protected forest area, Southern Italy, under different plant covering: Quercus ilex L. (Q), mixed Carpinus betulus L. and Carpinus orientalis Mill. (CC), Pinus halepensis L. (P), and mixed Quercus trojana Webb. and Quercus ilex L. (QQ). Results: Data obtained showed a fast decomposition process for P and QQ litters, with HAs in the underlying soils characterized by the presence of simple, highly fluorescent structural components also in the deepest layers. On the contrary, a slow decomposition process was observed for Q and CC litters, whose underlying soil HAs were characterized by an increasing aromatic polycondensation and humification degree from the surface to the deepest layers, as supported by low values of fluorescence intensity and high wavelength maxima. Conclusions: Results obtained indicate that P and QQ species promote C accumulation and stock in the underlying soils, thanks to a greater decomposition of their litter, and fluorescence spectroscopy is a very simple and suitable method to evaluate the influence of three species distribution on soil organic carbon pools.
