Due to their critical influence on manufacturing accuracy, machine tool feed drives and the monitoring of their condition has been a research field of increasing interest for several years already. Accurate and reliable estimates of the current condition of the machine tool feed drive's components ball screw drive (BSD) and linear guide shoes (LGSs) are expected to significantly enhance the maintainability of machine tools, which finally leads to economic benefits and smoother production. Therefore, many authors performed extensive experiments with different sensor signals, features and components. Most of those experiments were performed on simplified test benches in order to gain genuine and distinct insights into the correlations between the recorded sensor signals and the investigated fault modes. However, in order to build the bridge between real use cases and scientific findings, those investigations have to be transferred and performed on a more complex test bench, which is close to machine tools in operation. In this paper, a condition monitoring test cycle is developed for such a test bench. The developed test cycle enables the recording of a re-producible data basis, on which models for the condition monitoring of BSDs and LGSs can be based upon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to decrease mass, and thus fulfil the targets for airplane traffic emission reduction, the amount of titanium alloys used for structural components is rising. With the conventional milling process, low material utilization and short tool life lead to high manufacturing costs. Therefore, a process chain consisting of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and machining is developed. To realize its full potential, the machining process needs to be adapted to the near-net shaped components. A special focus lies on the machining allowance, since it influences both processes and in result the final part quality. In this paper a method to model the machining allowance is proposed and verified by analysing the changes from waviness to surface roughness occurring during peripheral milling of WAAM parts. Conventional industrial robots are increasingly used for milling applications of large workpieces due to their workspace and their low investment costs in comparison to conventional machine tools. However, static deflections and dynamic instabilities during the milling process limit the efficiency and productivity of such robot-based milling systems. Since the pose-dependent dynamic properties of the industrial robot structures are notoriously difficult to model analytically, machine learning methods are recently gaining more and more popularity to derive system models from experimental data. In this publication, a modeling concept based on a modern information fusion scheme, fusing simulation and experimental data, is proposed. This approach provides a precise model of the robot's pose-dependent structural dynamics and is validated for a one-dimensional variation of the robot pose. The results of two information fusion algorithms are compared with a conventional, data-driven approach and indicate a superior model accuracy regarding interpolation and extrapolation of the pose-dependent dynamics. The proposed approach enables decreasing the necessary amount of experimental data needed to assess the vibrational properties of the robot for a desired pose.
