Oral intake of purified selenoneine and seafoods has been reported to result in selenoneine accumulation in erythrocytes in mice and human. In addition, Se-methylselenoneine was suggested to be produced as a metabolite of selenoneine in the urine and whole blood of humans. In order to confirm the molecular mechanism of production of Se-methylselenoneine, a stable isotope (Se-76) labeled selenoneine was biosynthesized using genetically modified fission yeast and administered to mice. The Se-76-labeled Se-methylselenoneine was detected in urine but Se-78 and Se-80-labeled Se-methylselenoneine arising from natural isotopes of Se was hardly detected. These results suggest that Se-methylselenoneine was a metabolite and the excreted form of selenoneine. The methylation of selenoneine in mice administered selenoneine continuously was evaluated by the analyses of organs using an online liquid chromatograph system with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LC-ICP-MS). Selenoneine is an organic selenium compound contained in blood and dark muscle of fish. It has a strong antioxidative capacity and is considered useful as a new functional food material. However, the distribution and effects of selenoneine in the mammalian body have not been thoroughly examined. In this study, a selenoneine-rich mackerel extract was developed and fed to mice at 0.07% in standard rodent chow (ME diet) for 32 days to examine its distribution in the body. Selenoneine was distributed in the liver, kidney, and spleen in mice fed with mackerel extract, but it was not distributed in the plasma or erythrocytes. Moreover, concentrations of the major selenium-containing protein were not affected by the mackerel extract. The results of this study suggest that selenoneine is absorbed in the body following ingestion of low doses in crude material and preferentially accumulates in organs and later distributes in erythrocytes. Biochemical analyses of plasma in male mice showed that the glucose level was significantly increased and LDL-cholesterol level was significantly decreased by ME diet feeding. Some hemodialysis patients are not suitable for creation of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF) or arteriovenous graft (AVG). However, they can receive a tunneled cuffed central venous catheter (tcCVC), but this carries risks of infection and mortality. We aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of brachial artery transposition (BAT) versus those of tcCVC. This retrospective study evaluated hemodialysis patients who underwent BAT or tcCVC placement because of severe heart failure, hand ischemia, central venous stenosis or occlusion, inadequate vessels for creating standard arteriovenous access, or limited life expectancy. The primary outcome was whole access circuit patency. Thirty-eight patients who underwent BAT and 25 who underwent tcCVC placement were included. One-year patency rates for the whole access circuit were 84.6% and 44.9% in the BAT and tcCVC groups, respectively. The BAT group was more likely to maintain patency (unadjusted hazard ratio: 0.17, 95% confidence interval: 0.05–0.60, p = 0.006). The two groups did not have significantly different overall survival (log-rank p = 0.146), although severe complications were less common in the BAT group (3% vs. 28%, p = 0.005). Relative to tcCVC placement, BAT is safe and effective with acceptable patency in hemodialysis patients not suitable for AVF or AVG creation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type III interferons (IFNs) play an important role in respiratory viral infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. This study aimed to determine whether the expression of serum type III IFNs predicted disease severity among patients with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). A retrospective cohort study was conducted of patients admitted to a single hospital between March 21, 2020, and March 31, 2021. Patients were divided into mild to moderate I (MM) and moderate II to severe (MS) groups based on the COVID-19 severity classification developed by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. A total of 257 patients were included in the analysis. Human interleukin-28A (IL-28A/IFN-λ2) expression was significantly lower, and interleukin (IL)-6 expression was significantly higher in the MS group than in the MM group (both p < 0.001). In addition, IL-28A/IFN-λ2 was statistically significantly inversely correlated with the time from disease onset to negative SARS-CoV-2 PCR results (p = 0.049). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that IL-28A/IFN-λ2 was an independent predictor of disease severity (p = 0.021). The low expression of IL-28A/IFN-λ2 may serve as a serum biomarker that predicts the severity of COVID-19, possibly through the mechanism of delayed viral elimination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of the mothers' nighttime responses on the sleep–wake rhythm of their 1-month-old infants. This study used an anonymous self-administered survey questionnaire with 1133 mothers of 1-month-old infants. The questionnaire investigated basic information about the parents, growth environment of infants, mothers' sleep patterns during pregnancy, and infants' sleep patterns at the age of one month. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the influence of nighttime responses on the risk of infants sleeping longer during the day than at night. Regarding nighttime response behavior, it was found that immediately picking up 1-month-old infants results in longer sleep during the day than at night (OR 1.616 [1.017 − 2.566], p = 0.042), compared to delaying picking up the infant. In the present study, we investigated whether electroporation could be used for one-step multiplex CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing, targeting IL2RG and GHR in porcine embryos. First, we evaluated and selected guide RNAs (gRNAs) by analyzing blastocyst formation rates and genome editing efficiency. This was performed in embryos electroporated with one of three different gRNAs targeting IL2RG or one of two gRNAs targeting GHR. No significant differences in embryo development rates were found between control embryos and those subjected to electroporation, irrespective of the target gene. Two gRNAs targeting IL2RG (nos. 2 and 3) contributed to an increased biallelic mutation rate in porcine blastocysts compared with gRNA no. 1. There were no significant differences in the mutation rates between the two gRNAs targeting GHR. In our next experiment, the mutation efficiency and the development of embryos simultaneously electroporated with gRNAs targeting IL2RG and GHR were investigated. Similar embryo development rates were observed between embryos electroporated with two gRNAs and control embryos. When IL2RG-targeting gRNA no. 2 was used with GHR-targeting gRNAs no. 1 or no. 2, a significantly higher double biallelic mutation rate was observed than with IL2RG-targeting gRNA no. 3. In conclusion, we demonstrate the feasibility of using electroporation to transfer multiple gRNAs and Cas9 into porcine zygotes, enabling the double biallelic mutation of multiple genes with favorable embryo survival. The CRISPR/Cas9 system now allows for unprecedented possibilities of genome editing. However, there are some limitations, including achieving efficient one-step multiple genome targeting to save costs, time, and ensure high quality. In the present study, we investigated the efficiency of one-step multiple gene modification by electroporation in porcine zygotes using pooled guide RNAs (gRNAs) targeting CMAH, GHR, GGTA1, and PDX1. We first selected the best-performing gRNA from three different designs for each gene based on the effect on embryo development and mutation efficiency. The three gRNAs showed equivalent effects on the rates of blastocyst formation in each targeted gene; however, gRNAs CMAH #2, GHR #3, GGTA1 #3, and PDX1 #3 showed the highest biallelic mutation rate, although the total mutation rate of PDX1 #3 was significantly lower than that of PDX1 #1. Therefore, CMAH #2, GHR #3, GGTA1 #3, and PDX1 #1 were used as a mixture in electroporation to further clarify whether multiple genes can be targeted simultaneously. Individual sequencing of 43 blastocysts at the target sites of each gene showed mutations in one and two target genes in twenty-four (55.8%) and nine (20.9%) blastocysts, respectively. No mutation was detected in any target gene in ten (23.3%) blastocysts and no blastocysts had a mutation in three or more target genes. These results indicate that electroporation could effectively deliver multiple gRNAs and Cas9 protein into porcine zygotes to target multiple genes in a one-step process. This study investigated anxiety symptoms of Japanese adolescents in community high schools. Japanese high school students (N = 1500) from diverse types of schools including general, vocational, and part-time schools completed the Spence Children’s Anxiety Scale (SCAS). First, confirmatory factor analysis supported the 6-factor structure with strong goodness-of-fit indices comparable with the original studies as well as those with Japanese elementary and junior high school students. Girls showed more anxiety symptoms, and items related to worry, insects/spiders phobia, checking, and fear of negative evaluations were the most common symptoms, similar to younger youth. Finally, students who attended part-time high school reported higher anxiety symptoms than those in full-time schools. The utility of the SCAS for assessment of anxiety symptoms in high school students and the need for preventive interventions for students at risk for developing anxiety were discussed. Background: Nanoparticle albumin-bound (nab)-paclitaxel is a solvent-free formulation of paclitaxel that is bound to albumin and has demonstrated improved progression free survival in previous studies of breast cancer. However, it is difficult to treat Japanese patients with metastatic or recurrent breast cancer with the recommended dose of 260 mg/m of (nab)-paclitaxel for more than six cycles due to the occurrence of adverse events. To evaluate the treatment continuity and safety of low-dose nab-paclitaxel, we conducted a phase II study of nab-paclitaxel in patients with metastatic or recurrent breast cancer who had received up to one prior chemotherapy. Patients and methods: Treatment included low doses of 180 mg/m nab-paclitaxel that were administered on day 1 of each 3-week cycle to 35 patients. The primary endpoint was the completion rate of six cycles of treatment. Results: A total of 35 eligible patients were enrolled and received a median of eight (range 2-24) cycles of low-dose nab-paclitaxel therapy. The completion rate of six cycles of treatment was 66%. ORR and clinical benefit rate was 23 and 71%, respectively. Median PFS was 6.5 months and median OS was 44 months. Adverse events were relatively mild. Commonly observed grade 3/4 adverse events were neutropenia (46%), leukopenia (9%), and hypertension (3%). No grade 3-4 peripheral sensory neuropathy occurred. Conclusion: Treatment with a low dose of nab-paclitaxel once every 3 weeks was tolerable and of acceptable safety and might be beneficial for patients with metastatic or recurrent breast cancer. Clarification of the functiogenesis of the embryonic central nervous system (CNS) has long been problematic, because conventional electrophysiological techniques have several limitations. First, early embryonic neurons are small and fragile, and the application of microelectrodes is challenging. Second, the simultaneous monitoring of electrical activity from multiple sites is limited, and as a consequence, spatiotemporal response patterns of neural networks cannot be assessed. We have applied multiple-site optical recording with a voltage-sensitive dye to the embryonic CNS and paved a new way to analyze the functiogenesis of the CNS. In this review, we discuss key points of optical recording in the embryonic CNS and introduce recent progress in optical investigations on the embryonic CNS with special emphasis on the development of the chick olfactory system. The studies clearly demonstrate the usefulness of voltage-sensitive dye recording as a powerful tool for elucidating the functional organization of the vertebrate embryonic CNS. Purpose: Biphasic cuirass ventilation (BCV) is a form of non-invasive extrathoracic positive and negative pressure mechanical ventilation. The present study was conducted to quantify our positive experience using BCV to dramatically improve gas exchange and cardiac function in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic respiratory failure and secondary pulmonary hypertension (PH). Methods: BCV was applied for 2 weeks in 17 patients with PH caused by lung disease. Ventilation sessions were limited to 1 h per day to prevent exhaustion. To assess respiratory and circulatory effects, percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SpO) was measured before and after each daily BCV session, and right heart catheter test [mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP), right atrium pressure (RAP), pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP) and cardiac index (CI)] and serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were measured before and after a series of BCV sessions. Results: SpO transiently improved after each BCV session. After a series of BCV, mPAP decreased from 27.2 to 22.4 mmHg ( p = 0.0007). PAOP, CI and serum NT-proBNP levels decreased compared with baseline. No patients were treated with epoprostenol, iloprost, bosentan or sildenafil for PH. Purpose: Low tidal volume ventilation improves the outcomes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, no studies have investigated the use of a rescue therapy involving mechanical ventilation when low tidal volume ventilation cannot maintain homeostasis. Inverse ratio ventilation (IRV) is one candidate for such rescue therapy, but the roles and effects of IRV as a rescue therapy remain unknown. Methods: We undertook a retrospective review of the medical records of patients with ARDS who received IRV in our hospital from January 2007 to May 2014. Gas exchange, ventilation, and outcome data were collected and analyzed. Results: Pressure-controlled IRV was used for 13 patients during the study period. Volume-controlled IRV was not used. IRV was initiated on 4.4 ventilation days when gas exchange could not be maintained. IRV significantly improved the PaO/FiO from 76 ± 27 to 208 ± 91 mmHg without circulatory impairment. The mean duration of IRV was 10.5 days, and all survivors were weaned from mechanical ventilation and discharged. The 90-day mortality rate was 38.5 %. Univariate analysis showed that the duration of IRV was associated with the 90-day mortality rate. No patients were diagnosed with pneumothorax. Conclusions: Pressure-controlled IRV provided acceptable gas exchange without apparent complications and served as a successful bridge to conventional treatment when used as a rescue therapy for moderate to severe ARDS. Using an optical imaging technique with voltage-sensitive dyes (VSDs), we investigated the functional organization and architecture of the central nervous system (CNS) during embryogenesis. In the embryonic nervous system, a merocyanine-rhodanine dye, NK2761, has proved to be the most useful absorption dye for detecting neuronal activity because of its high signal-to-noise ratio ( S/ N), low toxicity and small dye bleaching. In the present study, we evaluated the suitability of fluorescence VSDs for optical recording in the embryonic CNS. We screened eight styryl (hemicyanine) dyes in isolated brainstem-spinal cord preparations from 7-day-old chick embryos. Measurements of voltage-related optical signals were made using a multiple-site optical recording system. The signal size, S/ N, photobleaching, effects of perfusion and recovery of neural responses after staining were compared. We also evaluated optical responses with various magnifications. Although the S/ N was lower than with the absorption dye, clear optical responses were detected with several fluorescence dyes, including di-2-ANEPEQ, di-4-ANEPPS, di-3-ANEPPDHQ, di-4-AN(F)EPPTEA, di-2-AN(F)EPPTEA and di-2-ANEPPTEA. Di-2-ANEPEQ showed the largest S/ N, whereas its photobleaching was faster and the recovery of neural responses after staining was slower. Di-4-ANEPPS and di-3-ANEPPDHQ also exhibited a large S/ N but required a relatively long time for recovery of neural activity. Di-4-AN(F)EPPTEA, di-2-AN(F)EPPTEA and di-2-ANEPPTEA showed smaller S/ Ns than di-2-ANEPEQ, di-4-ANEPPS and di-3-ANEPPDHQ; but the recovery of neural responses after staining was faster. A 78-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of general fatigue. The electrocardiogram showed ST elevation in the I, II, aV, and V-V leads. Echocardiography showed left ventricular apical akinesis. On emergent cardiac catheterization, left ventricular basal hyperkinesis and apical akinesis without coronary artery stenosis were found. The patient was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Two-dimensional myocardial speckle tracking echocardiography was performed on admission, the 8th hospital day, and the 15th hospital day. Gradual improvement in wall motion abnormality and longitudinal peak systolic strain, peak systolic strain rate, and early diastolic strain rate from the basal to apical region of the left ventricle were observed objectively, and she achieved remission. We herein report a case of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy in which objective improvement in left ventricular contraction and relaxation was observed by 2D speckle tracking imaging and bull's eye mapping. Although constipation is very common during pregnancy, the exact mechanism is unknown. We hypothesized that the involvement of estrogen receptor (ER) in the regulation of electrolyte transporter in the colon leads to constipation. In this study, the intestines of normal female ICR mouse and pregnant mice were examined for the expression of ERα and ERβ by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. ERβ, but not ERα, was expressed in surface epithelial cells of the proximal, but not distal, colon on pregnancy days 10, 15, and 18, but not day 5, and the number of ERβ-positive cells increased significantly during pregnancy. Expression of NHE3, the gene that harbors estrogen response element, examined by immunohistochemistry and western blotting, was localized in the surface epithelial cells of the proximal colon and increased in parallel with ERβ expression. In ovariectomized mice, NHE3 expression was only marginal and was up-regulated after treatment with 17β-estradiol (E), but not E + ICI 182,780 (estrogen receptor antagonist). Moreover, knock-down of ERβ expression by electroporetically transfected siRNA resulted in a significant reduction of NHE3 expression. These results indicate that ERβ regulates the expression of NHE3 in the proximal colon of pregnant mice through estrogen action, suggesting the involvement of increased sodium absorption by up-regulated NHE3 in constipation during pregnancy. Glycerol galactoside (GG; floridoside: 2- O-glycerol-α- d-galactopyranoside, and isofloridoside: 1- O-glycerol-α- d-galactopyranoside) is known to be a component of edible red seaweed nori. Recently, we have found that low-quality nori (color-faded nori), which has a low protein content, contains a large quantity of GG. From further studies, we have also found that GG has prebiotic characteristics in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the in vivo prebiotic activity of GG in rats. Dietary GG selectively increased the cecal Bifidobacterium count in rats. Other indices of prebiotics, such as pH of cecal content, organic acid concentrations, and fecal weight, also supported the existence of prebiotic activity of GG. Background: We reported a modification of the hepatic portoenterostomy (HPE) for biliary atresia with favorable results. HPE is associated with a risk of hepatic impairment, so we adopted a novel steroid therapy regimen well suited to our procedure. This paper reports the results of our experience.Patients and Methods: Between 1991 and 2009, 53 patients (18 boys, 35 girls) underwent modified HPE with novel steroid therapy, which consisted of administering hydrocortisone immediately after surgery, followed by intravenous administration of prednisolone. The number of patients who became normal total bilirubin (TB) levels, frequency of early onset cholangitis and other postoperative complications, and outcomes were retrospectively studied.Results: The TB levels in 43 of the 53 patients became normal. Cholangitis was observed in seven, but all of them recovered. Other postoperative complications were noted in eight, but with no fatal cases. Of the 11 patients who underwent living-donor liver transplantation, 3 died after the transplant. Of the 53 patients, 39 are alive without liver transplantation and 34 have normal TB (range of observation period: 18 years and 9-2 months).Conclusions: The novel steroid regimen may have contributed to the outcome and appears to be well suited to the modified HPE. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate thinsection computed tomography (CT) and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) findings of localized pulmonary mucinous bronchioloalveolar carcinomas (BACs).Methods and Materials: From February 2000 to February 2009, there were seven patients with pulmonary localized mucinous BACs that were pathologically confirmed in the surgical specimens. Their CT findings were assessed regarding location, extent (percent) of groundglass opacity (GGO), margin characteristics, and the presence of air-containing spaces and contractive changes. We evaluated the presence of the "angiogram sign" in the patients who underwent enhanced CT. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) on FDG-PET was measured in four cases.Results: All tumors were located in the lower lobes. The percentages of GGOs ranged from 0% to 70% (average 20%). The tumor margins were well defined in five cases and ill-defined in two cases. Air-containing spaces were seen in all cases. Evidence of contractive change was seen in two of the seven cases. The angiogram sign was identified in one of five patients who underwent enhanced CT. The SUVmax on FDG-PET ranged from 0.93 to 1.97 (mean 1.53).Conclusion: The imaging features of localized mucinous BACs include solid or partly solid attenuation, the presence of air-containing spaces, lack of contractive changes, and lower lobe predominance. The patient was a 74-year-old female. Screening computed tomography for examination of the abdomen showed a cystic mass in the pancreatic body. Close investigation using endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed a very rare finding: the main pancreatic duct bifurcated at the pancreatic body, and these two ducts converged at the caudal side. A multilocular cystic mass in the pancreatic body and mucus discharge from the orifice of major papilla were observed. There was no protruded lesion in the main pancreatic duct. No findings suggested apparent malignancy. The patient was diagnosed as having hyperplastic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of branch type showing a ring-shaped pancreatic duct, and was placed under follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To evaluate the relationship between SUVmax of primary lung cancers on FDG-PET and lymph node metastasis. The subjects were a total of consecutive 66 patients with lung cancer who were examined by FDG-PET and subsequently underwent surgery between October 2004 and January 2008. There were 41 males and 25 females, ranging in age from 45 to 83 years with an average of 68 years. The pathological subtypes of the lung cancers consisted of 49 adenocarcinomas, 11 squamous cell carcinomas, 2 adenosquamous carcinoma, 1 large cell carcinoma, 1 small cell carcinoma, 1 pleomorphic carcinoma and 1 mucoepidermoid carcinoma. We statistically compared (1) the mean SUVmax of lung cancer between the groups with and without lymph node metastasis (2) the frequency of lymph node metastasis between higher and lower SUVmax of lung cancer groups that were classified by using the median SUVmax of lung cancer, and (3) evaluated the relationship between the SUVmax of lung cancer and frequency of lymph node metastases, and (4) correlations between the SUVmax of lung cancer and number of the metastatic lymph nodes and pathological n stages. The difference in the average of the SUVmax of lung cancer between the cases with and without lymph node metastases was statistically significant ( p = 0.00513). Lymph node metastasis was more frequently seen in the higher SUVmax of lung cancer group (17/33, 52%) than in the lower SUVmax of lung cancer group (7/33, 21%) with a statistically significant difference. There was no lymph node metastasis in lung cancers with an SUVmax of lung cancer less than 2.5, and lung cancers with an SUVmax of lung cancer more than 12 had a 70% frequency of lymph node metastasis. There were moderate correlations between SUVmax of lung cancer, and the number of the metastatic lymph nodes ( γ = 0.404, p = 0.001) and pathological n stage ( γ = 0.411, p = 0.001). For a better understanding of epigenetic regulation of cell differentiation, it is important to analyze DNA methylation at a specific site. Although previous studies described methylation of isolated DNA extracted from cells and tissues using a combination of appropriate restriction endonucleases, no application to tissue cell level has been reported. Here, we report a new method, named histo endonuclease-linked detection of methylation sites of DNA (HELMET), designed to detect methylation sites of DNA with a specific sequences in a tissue section. In this study, we examined changes in the methylation level of CCGG sites during spermatogenesis in paraffin-embedded sections of mouse testis. In principle, the 3′-OH ends of DNA strand breaks in a section were firstly labeled with a mixture of dideoxynucleotides by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), not to be further elongated by TdT. Then the section was digested with Hpa II, resulting in cutting the center portion of non-methylated CCGG. The cutting sites were labeled with biotin-16-dUTP by TdT. Next, the section was treated with Msp I, which can cut the CCGG sequence irrespective of the presence or absence of methylation of the second cytosine, and the cutting sites were labeled with digoxigenin-11-dUTP by TdT. Finally, both biotin and digoxigenin were visualized by enzyme- or fluorescence-immunohistochemistry. Using this method, we found hypermethylation of CCGG sites in most of the germ cells although non-methylated CCGG were colocalized in elongated spermatids. Interestingly, some TUNEL-positive germ cells, which are frequent in mammalian spermatogenesis, became markedly Hpa II-reactive, indicating that the CCGG sites may be demethylated during apoptosis. Glycerol galactoside (GG; floridoside + isofloridoside) and porphyra-334 (P-334) are contained in nori (Susabinori Porphyra yezoensis and Asakusanori Porphyra tenera). Glycerol galactoside has been found to have bifidogenic growth stimulator activity and P-334 is known to have ultraviolet-absorbing activity in the UVA region of sunlight. These substances have, respectively, potential for application to pre-biotic foods and in cosmetics as a sunscreen. In the present study, to investigate the relationships between GG and P-334 contents and the quality of nori, we measured the GG and P-334 contents with other components (total protein, chlorophyll-a, β-carotene and phycobillins) that are related to the quality of nori samples produced from different production areas and with different qualities. We found that the GG content was closely negatively correlated with the contents of other components, whereas P-334 was positively correlated with the other components. From these results, it is suggested that low-quality nori is a potential source of GG, and as a source for P-334, scraps of nori produced during nori processing should be suitable. Transmembrane α-helices in integral membrane proteins are recognized co-translationally and inserted into the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum by the Sec61 translocon. A full quantitative description of this phenomenon, linking amino acid sequence to membrane insertion efficiency, is still lacking. Here, using in vitro translation of a model protein in the presence of dog pancreas rough microsomes to analyse a large number of systematically designed hydrophobic segments, we present a quantitative analysis of the position-dependent contribution of all 20 amino acids to membrane insertion efficiency, as well as of the effects of transmembrane segment length and flanking amino acids. The emerging picture of translocon-mediated transmembrane helix assembly is simple, with the critical sequence characteristics mirroring the physical properties of the lipid bilayer. Sarcoidosis is often identified as swollen hilar lymph nodes found in chest radiography during routine physical checkups. We report a patient with concomitant sarcoidosis and lung cancer necessitating thoracoscopic lymph node biopsy to differentiate between sarcoidosis and lung cancer as the cause of mediastinal/hilar lymph node swelling prior to conducting pulmonary lobectomy. Thoracoscopic biopsy of left mediastinal lymph nodes and sampling of frozen sections of right lymph nodes during intraoperative diagnosis did not detect metastasis. A permanent pathological slide, however, indicated that right interlobar (#11s) lymph nodes involved both sarcoidosis and lung cancer metastasis. Despite careful preparation, it thus remains difficult to distinguish between these conditions even when lymph nodes are strictly evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new bacterial disease of tall goldenrod ( Solidago altissima L., “Seitaka-awadachiso” in Japanese), one of the most serious weeds in non-agricultural land, was discovered in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Characterized by angular or round, dark brown necrotic spots on leaves, this disease resulted in defoliation and terminal dieback of the plants in severe cases. The disease was named “bacterial leaf spot”. The causal bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas syringae based on its bacteriological properties including those determined by LOPAT tests. The present bacterium was pathogenic to tall goldenrod alone but not to many other tested plants including weeds, flowers, trees and crops. In addition, P. syringae pv. syringae and other pathovars did not show any pathogenicity to tall goldenrod. Because no pathovars of P. syringae pathogenic to tall goldenrod have been reported, the present bacterium was concluded to be a new pathovar of P. syringae. We propose the name P. syringae pv. solidagae pv. nov. , and strain Sei 1 (MAFF 810063) is designated as the pathotype strain and has been deposited in the MAFF collection with two reference strains (MAFF 810064 and MAFF81066). Coronary artery stenosis is seen in 10-45% of patients with Takayasu's arteritis (TA) and coronary ostia are most frequently involved. It may cause angina pectoris and sudden death during the early course of the disease. We describe a 14-year-old girl who first presented with exertional angina and syncope and was diagnosed as having left coronary artery ostial stenosis from TA by using transthoracic echocardiography. This is the first report showing the important role of color flow and pulsed Doppler echocardiography to detect coronary artery stenosis caused by TA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 33-year-old asymptomatic woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of an abnormal shadow on a chest radiograph. A chest-computed tomogram revealed a cystic, partially solid tumor in the right inferior mediastinum. Following an initial diagnosis of cystic teratoma, surgery was performed. The tumor, a well-encapsulated, thin-walled cyst located within the right inferior lobe of the thymus, was extirpated by partial resection of the thymus. The cut surface revealed a unilocular cyst containing multiple grayish-white tumors on the inner cyst walls. Some tumors detached from the wall owing to loose connections. Microscopic findings revealed that the cyst was lined with squamous epithelium. The tumor on the cyst wall was diagnosed to be a type B1 thymoma. Based on these findings, we diagnosed this case as a thymoma originating from the wall of a thymic cyst, accompanied by intracystic dissemination from the tumor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
