Deep learning-based CT image reconstruction (DLR) is a state-of-the-art method for obtaining CT images. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of DLR in radiotherapy. Data were acquired using a large-bore CT system and an electron density phantom for radiotherapy. We compared the CT values, image noise, and CT value-to-electron density conversion table of DLR and hybrid iterative reconstruction (H-IR) for various doses. Further, we evaluated three DLR reconstruction strength patterns (Mild, Standard, and Strong). The variations of CT values of DLR and H-IR were large at low doses, and the difference in average CT values was insignificant with less than 10 HU at doses of 100 mAs and above. DLR showed less change in CT values and smaller image noise relative to H-IR. The noise-reduction effect was particularly large in the low-dose region. The difference in image noise between DLR Mild and Standard/Strong was large, suggesting the usefulness of reconstruction intensities higher than Mild. DLR showed stable CT values and low image noise for various materials, even at low doses; particularly for Standard or Strong, the reduction in image noise was significant. In single-isocenter multiple-target stereotactic radiotherapy (SIMT-SRT), it is difficult to evaluate both the geometrical accuracy and absorbed dose measurement when irradiating off-isocenter targets. This study aimed to develop a simple quality assurance (QA) method to evaluate off-isocenter irradiation position accuracy in SIMT-SRT and compare its feasibility with that of a commercial device. First, we created two types of inserts and metallic balls with a diameter of 5 mm to be inserted into a commercially available phantom (SIMT phantom). Second, we developed a dedicated analysis software using Python for the Winston–Lutz test (WLT). Third, an image processing software, including the filtered back-projection algorithm, was developed to analyze the images obtained using an electronic portal imaging device (EPID). Fourth, the feasibility of our method was evaluated by comparing it with the results of WLT using two commercially available phantoms: WL-QA and MultiMet-WL cubes. Notably, 92% of the results in one-dimensional deviations were within 0.26 mm (EPID pixel width). The correlation coefficients were 0.52, 0.92, and 0.96 in the left–right, superior-inferior, and anterior–posterior directions, respectively. In the WLT, a maximum two-dimensional deviation of 0.70 mm was detected in our method, while the deviation in the other method was within 0.5 mm. The advantage of our method is that it can evaluate the geometrical accuracy at any gantry angle during dynamic rotation irradiation using a filtered back-projection algorithm, even if the target is located off the isocenter. The Hox genes and its evolutionary sister, the ParaHox genes, are widely distributed among animals. Although it has been expected that hemichordates and echinoderms have a single set of Hox genes and most likely a single set of ParaHox genes, it is not known whether the ortholog of Hox8 is absent in hemichordates, and in turn, consensus view about Hox/ParaHox gene complements in hemichordates has not been established. In this study, we isolated either complete or nearly complete coding sequences of 12 Hox genes, including the ortholog of the Hox8 that has not been reported in the previous studies, and three ParaHox genes from the recently discovered indirect-developing acorn worm, Balanoglossus simodensis. Our data suggest that the ancestral hemichordate had intact complements of ambulacrarian prototypical Hox and ParaHox genes, consisting of 12 and three members, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel real-time nested-PCR assay was developed to quantify integrated human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) DNA with high specificity and sensitivity. This assay reproducibly allowed the detection of three copies of integrated HIV DNA in a background of 100,000 cell equivalents of human chromosomal DNA. The non-specific amplification of unintegrated HIV-1 DNA was significantly inhibited in this assay and the specificity of this assay was much higher than the previously reported method. This assay showed that kinetics in viral DNA sysnthesis was cell-type dependent and that the kinetics of HIV-1 DNA integration was very rapid in Jurkat T cell line. A scanning lidar system was developed to watch the nighttime diffusion process of plume from a smokestack of a large incinerator located around 3 km from the system. Observed data sets were visualized as three dimensional images in which could be seen the diffusion pattern from any direction, and this made it easy to investigate the exhaust dynamics. Observation results showed that the original plume extended at least 1.6 km, where there was a residential area, from the smokestack increasing in diameter to about 500 m. High density aerosols originating from the smokestack were measured in that area even at midnight. A Mie lidar system with an eye-safe wavelength of 1.54 μm was developed and its performance characteristics were experimentally discussed. The wavelength was generated by a Nd:YAG based methane-shifted Raman laser. The collected backscattering light was detected by an InGaAs avalanche photodiode working in photon counting mode at that wavelength. Results of atmospheric observation showed clearly the dynamics of multi-layered clouds up to an altitude of 7 km. The system's performance was confirmed on the point of signal to noise ratio in both the observation and the simulation. Static characteristics of two different structured InAlGaAs/InAlAs superlattice avalanche photodiodes (SLAPDs) cooled by liquid nitrogen were evaluated at a wavelength of 1.5 μm. The dark current of the SLAPD having a thick superlattice layer of 0.504 μm was 5 × 10−13 A. This was successively reduced by four orders of magnitude compared to that of the thin layer SLAPD of 0.231 μm at a breakdown voltage of around 20 V. The thickened layer was effective in suppressing tunneling dark current. An output current of 1.7×l0−12 A at a bias voltage of 15 V was measured for an optical input with a wavelength of 1.5 μm and a signal power of 1 × 10−12 W. Laser-induced fluorescence imaging lidar was developed for in vivo plant/vegetation monitoring. Fluorescences of poplar tree leaves growing naturally at a distance of 60 m from the lidar were successfully detected as two spectral images at wavelengths of 685 nm and 740 nm. By comparing chlorophyll concentration quantified with high performance liquid chromatography, it was confirmed that the intensity ratio of the two wavelengths was converted into the chlorophyll concentration inside the leaves. The intensity ratio of the images reflected the status of the poplar tree in the process of senescence so well that it was possible to assess the living status of the tree as a numerical value. The performance characteristics and the potential of the laser-induced fluorescence imaging lidar for monitoring the physiological activities of plants and vegetation are described. A method to observe the dispersion structure of carbon nanotubes buried inside a molding composite is described in this communication. The idea is that by utilizing the difference in ablation temperature between the tubes and the composite material, only the composite material, which has a lower ablation temperature, is ablated and buried tubes appear. This was applied to a rubber composite mixed with vapor-grown carbon fibers. A 150-fs pulse laser was prepared as an ablation source. In the ablation images observed with a field-emission secondary electron microscope, linear tubes, clusters, and connections of the tubes could be easily found in their original state. Optical characteristics of the retroreflector in space (RIS) on the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) in orbit were tested using a second harmonics Nd:YAG laser. The intensity of reflection from the RIS was analyzed with an intensified charge coupled device camera by comparing the image with those of stars.
