A new species of the genus Leptus, L. (L.) brevitarsus sp. n., is described and illustrated from ectoparasitic larvae collected from grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) in Australia. Spider mites are important pests of cotton, a vital fiber crop cultivated in sun-drenched regions. This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of spider mite species infesting cotton fields in Aydin province, Türkiye. Spider mites were found in a significant portion (89%) of the surveyed fields. The two most abundant mite species, were the red form (RF) of Tetranychus urticae (57.1%) and T. turkestani (39.3%). A minor presence of T. urticae green form (GF) (3.6%) was observed. Tetranychus urticae RF was more prevalent in coastal areas, while T. turkestani was more common inland. Field surveys demonstrated that areas with higher T. urticae RF prevalence exhibited more frequent spraying, potentially due to this species’ greater capacity to develop resistance compared to T. turkestani. This study also investigated the prevalence of Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Cardinium and Spiroplasma endosymbionts, which are linked with pesticide resistance due to their ability to degrade pesticides, in these mite populations. The study confirmed the presence of Wolbachia and Rickettsia endosymbionts in spider mite populations in Türkiye. However, no Cardinium or Spiroplasma were detected in any of the populations. Infection rates of the detected endosymbionts differed between T. urticae and T. turkestani. Future studies should investigate the resistance levels of these tetranychid mite species as well as the role of their endosymbiotic bacteria in resistance in cotton-growing areas. A new species of the subgenus Leptus (Amaroptus), L. (A.) sivasensissp. n., is described and illustrated from an ectoparasitic larva collected from Cerceris sabulosa (Panzer, 1799) (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) in İmranlı district of Sivas province, Türkiye. The holotype and paratypes of Leptus (Amaroptus) vuki are studied and some corrections to the original description are presented. Also, new metric data and host records are given for L. We studied the distribution of chigger mite species over mammal hosts, attachment sites on the host body, habitats, and seasons in Iran. The study was based on 2155 specimens of 36 chigger species collected from 10 species of Muridae, Cricetidae, and Soricidae across six provinces of northern Iran. A high level of mixed infestation by chiggers was recorded—76% of hosts parasitized by chiggers were infested by more than one (2–8) species. Statistically significant differences in the preference for anterior and posterior parts of the host body were found. Three species—Neotrombicula lubrica, N. delijani, and Cheladonta firdousii—preferred the posterior part of the host body; 12 species were characterized by the occurrence in the anterior part and differed from one another by the frequency of presence in the posterior part. One species, Hirsutiella alpina, was found only in the anterior part of the host body (inside the ears of rodents). The most diverse chigger fauna was on the fringe of Golestan National Park (species richness = 21, Shannon–Wiener index = 2.823). The chigger fauna of the high-mountain localities on the Alborz Range was the least diverse (species richness = 16, Shannon–Wiener index = 2.439). The seasonal aspect of activity was evident for Neotrombicula elegans, which exposed the autumn–winter period of the occurrence on hosts, and N. vernalis, with the winter-spring peak of abundance. A new species of Biskratrombium (Trombidiformes: Microtrombidiidae), B. persicumn. sp. is described and illustrated, from Fars province, southern Iran. Biskratrombium persicum larvae are ectoparasites of the adults of Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) alexandri (Sinton, 1928), P. (Phlebotomus) papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) and Sergentomyia (Sergentomyia) mervynae (Pringle, 1953) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Fars province is considered as a significant focus of leishmaniasis, a disease which is mostly associated with rural areas; these areas offer favorable habitats to the phlebotomine sandflies due to limited sanitation. This study was performed to identify the natural enemies of sandflies (as leishmania disease vectors) in this region. In this research, B. persicum larvae were removed from their sandfly hosts collected from foci of leishmaniasis (e.g., sheep and goat keeping locations) using sticky traps. Also, the abundance of sandflies infested with the parasitic mite was calculated. Morphology-based identification of Allothrombium spp., in view of the limited knowledge of intraspecific variation, hinders the recognition of species borders and affects the views on the actual distribution of species. Therefore, identification will benefit from reference to molecular methods. The separate species identity of specimens putatively representing Allothrombium fuliginosum and A. pulvinum, both reported as widely distributed in the Palaearctic region and considered as potential biological control agents, was checked using morphological and molecular analyses. The representatives of various Allothrombium spp. collected in the Palaearctic were included in the analysis in order to ascertain the distance between species. The results of the morphological examination, supported by statistical inference, along with the comparison of COI and/or ITS2 sequences, weaken the hypothesis of synoccurrence of both species in the Palaearctic region. Hence, we hypothesize that A. fuliginosum is widely distributed in the Palaearctic, whereas A. pulvinum should be regarded a Nearctic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Members of the family Podapolipidae (Acari: Trombidiformes: Prostigmata) are highly specialized obligate parasites of various insects particularly Coleoptera and usually live in the subelytral cavity of host beetles. These mites exhibit a degree of host specificity at the family level. However, a remarkable exception is the genus Podapolipus, members of which parasitize three families of Coleoptera, some Orthoptera and a few Blattaria. In a survey on parasitic mites associated with insects in southern parts of Iran (Fars province), colonies of a new species of this genus were found. The mite Podapolipus laricus Majidi and Hajiqanbar sp. n. is described and illustrated. Colonies of mites were separated from under elytra and terminal abdominal segments of tenebrionid beetles, Trachyderma hispida Forskål, 1775 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Pimeliinae). The new species is compared with closely related species, Podapolipus khorasanicus Hajiqanbar, 2013 and P. luzoni Husband and Corpus-Raros, 1989. In this paper, we redescribe Gaeolaelaps deinos (Zeman 1982) based on morphological characters of female and male specimens collected from nests of Lasius sp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Khuzestan and Chaharmahal va Bakhtiari Provinces, Iran, and based on its holotype photos. The ectoparasitic honey bee mite Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman (Acari: Varroidae) is one of the major concerns for worldwide beekeeping. The use of synthetic pyrethroids for controlling the mite was among the most popular treatments until resistance evolved in the mid 1990’s. In Iran, beekeepers are dealing with the parasite and they also used pyrethroids for controlling the mite for a long time. After the evolution of resistance to pyrethroids, they based mite control mostly on treatments with amitraz, organic acids and several management practices. Here we conducted a comprehensive characterization of V. destructor populations parasitizing Apis mellifera in Iran. We determined the genetic variability of mites collected from 28 localities distributed throughout the country. The haplotype of V. destructor was determined by PCR-RFLP, analyzing a fragment of the mitochondrial cox1 gene. It was found that only the Korean haplotype was present in samples from all localities. DNA fragments from cox1, atp6, cox3 and cytb mitochondrial genes were sequenced and the results showed that all samples were identical to the K1-1 or the K1-2 V. destructor haplotypes. Moreover, as it has been reported that resistance to pyrethroids in V. destructor is associated with mutations at position 925 of the voltage-gated sodium channel, a TaqMan®-based allelic discrimination assay was conducted to genotype the mites collected. The results showed that all the mites tested were homozygous for the wild-type allele and, therefore, susceptible to treatment with pyrethroids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Determination of attraction and avoidance behavior of predators is important in concomitant use of multiple natural enemies to control a pest. The olfactory response of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis was studied to odors related to Tetranychus urticae adults infected by Beauveria bassiana DEBI008 in 0, 24, 48 and 72 h intervals, both in absence and in presence of plants. In plant-present experiments, P. persimilis attraction was neither towards adults of T. urticae infected by 0.02 % Tween 80 (as control), nor to the ones infected by B. bassiana for 0 or 24 h, whereas significant attraction towards the control was observed when tested against T. urticae infected by B. bassiana for 48 or 72 h. In absence of plants, P. persimilis displayed significant avoidance of T. urticae infected by B. bassiana for 48 or 72 h, when their alternative option was 0.02 % Tween 80-infected T. urticae adults. These results indicate that P. persimilis can recognize the presence of B. bassiana and that the predator avoids the fungus. The functional response of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias- Henriot was examined on either non-inoculated or inoculated adults of the spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch by Beauveria bassiana DEBI008 with four time intervals; 0, 24, 48 and 72-h treatments, at 25 ± 1 °C, 60-70 % RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L: D). Results indicated that functional responses of P. persimilis on both untreated and B. bassiana treated adults of T. urticae are type II. Data analysis showed that handling time of predator was increased on treated T. urticae with the increase of the time after spray in comparison with that of untreated adults of T. urticae (3.5143, 3.8152, 4.0735, 7.6829 and 11.7789 h.), respectively. Differences among treatments for handling time were significant. Attack rates were close to each others and there was no significant difference in attack rates of different time interval treatments. With the increase of the time after spray adults of the spider mite, T. urticae by B. bassiana caused intensive increasing in handling time of P. persimilis and accordingly it caused intensive decreasing in feeding rate of predator. Chigger mites of Afghanistan were studied on the base of collections made in Eastern and Central Hindu Kush, Kabul, and some other localities. Fifteen chigger species parasitizing nine species of Rodentia, two species of Lagomorpha, and one species of Soricomorpha were found, including 13 species which were not previously recorded in Afghanistan. Eco-geographical variability is observed in Shunsennia oudemansi: Individuals of this species from high-mountain localities of Eastern Hindu Kush are characterized by larger values of most morphometric characters than the specimens collected in Kabul. Vertical and horizontal distribution of chiggers and chigger-host relationships in Eastern Hindu Kush is discussed. Comparison of our data with that on chigger fauna in the region of Tirich Mir clearly demonstrates the role of the Eastern Hindu Kush main ridge as a border between different chigger faunas. Allothrombium pulvinum Ewing is a common natural enemy of aphids and some other arthropods. So far, there are no studies that have addressed genetic variation of this predatory mite. We investigated genetic variation of A. pulvinum across its whole known range in Iran. A 410 bp portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (coxI) and 797-802 bp portion of the internal transcribed spacer 2 of rDNA (ITS2) were sequenced for 55 individuals from 11 populations, resulting in 12 and 26 haplotypes, respectively. In the coxI region, haplotype and nucleotide diversities varied among populations from 0.00 to 0.90 and from 0.0000 to 0.0110, respectively. In the ITS2 region they varied from 0.20 to 0.91 and from 0.0006 to 0.0023, respectively. For both gene regions the highest haplotype and nucleotide diversities were detected in population Mahmoud Abad from northern Iran. Statistically significant population differentiation (FST) was detected in most pair-wise population comparisons. The results of population differentiation for both gene regions were generally congruent indicating that A. pulvinum from Iran consists of genetically different populations. This suggests that A. pulvinum comprises at least two geographically distinct populations or even more than one species. This study is an initial step towards understanding genetic variation of A. pulvinum, a taxon for which little molecular information is available. While searching for food, predators may use volatiles associated with their prey, but also with their competitors for prey. This was tested for the case of Zetzellia mali (Ewing) (Acari: Stigmaeidae), an important predator of the hawthorn spider mite, Amphitetranychus viennensis (Zacher) (Acari: Tetranychidae), in black-cherry orchards in Baraghan, Iran. Using a Y-tube olfactometer, the response of this predatory mite was tested to odour from black-cherry leaves with a conspeciWc female predatory mite, either with or without a female of the hawthorn spider mite when the alternative odour came from blackcherry leaves with the hawthorn spider mite only. Female predators avoided odours from leaves with both a hawthorn spider mite and a conspecific predator, as well as leaves with a conspecific predator only. The effect of host plant species including black cherry (Prunus serotina cv. Irani), cherry (Prunus avium cv. siahe Mashhad) and apple (Malus domestica cv. shafi Abadi) was studied on biological parameters of Amphitetranychus viennensis (Zacher) in the laboratory at 25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and 16L: 8D photoperiod. Duration of each life stage, longevity, reproduction rate, the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm), net reproductive rate (R0), mean generation time (T), doubling time (DT), and finite rate of increase (λ) of the hawthorn spider mite on the three host plants were calculated. Differences in fertility life table parameters of the spider mite among host plants were analyzed using pseudo-values, which were produced by jackknife re-sampling. The results indicated that black cherry might be the most suitable plant for hawthorn spider mite due to the shorter developmental period (10.6 days), longer adult longevity (25.5 days), higher reproduction (65.6 eggs), and intrinsic rate of natural increase (0.194 females/female/day). Cherry was the least suitable host plant. To determine the effect of host shifts, the mite was transferred from black cherry onto cherry and apple. In the first generation after shifting to apple, the developmental period, reproduction and life table parameters were negatively influenced. However, population growth parameters in the first generation on cherry were actually better than after three generations on this new host. The deutonymphs of Allothrombium pulvinum Ewing (Acari: Trombidiidae) are among the most important natural enemies of spider mites in North, North East and West Iran. In this study, maximum predation rate and preference experiments were conducted with A. pulvinum deutonymphs on apple leaf discs, to determine their preference for either of two spider mite species: Amphitetranychus viennensis (Zacher) and Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). Maximum predation rate tests showed that the predatory mite consumed more eggs and females of T. urticae than of A. viennensis. Furthermore, the Manly's preference index for eggs and females of T. urticae confirmed that T. urticae were the preferred prey. The functional response of A. pulvinum deutonymphs on females of T. urticae was examined over a 24-h period. Predation of A. pulvinum deutonymphs presented with females of T. urticae followed a type III functional response. Estimated handling time for the predatory mites was 4.51 h and attack coefficient b, which describes the changes in attack rate with prey densities in a type III functional response, was 0.021. Reports that in this study aphid-plant association and its effect on host preference of parasitic Allothrombium pulvinum larvae was examined with multiple-choice tests. Host species selection, host size selection and superparasitism with mite larvae were studied with two-choice tests. Three aphid species were used: Macrosiphum rosae, Aphis gossypii and Hyalopterus amygdali. In multiple-choice tests, larvae of A. pulvinum showed no significant preference for any aphid-plant association when given M. rosae on rose, A. gossypii on cucumber and H. amygdali on apricot simultaneously. Two-choice tests showed that larval mites preferred H. amygdali to A. gossypii, but had no preference when offered a choice between A. gossypii and M. rosae or between H. amygdali and M. rosae. In host size selection and superparasitism tests, significantly more mites selected the larger host (M. rosae). Furthermore, parasitised H. amygdali were preferred to unparasitised ones.
