Ensemble analysis is proven to provide advantages in climate change impact assessment based on outputs from climate models. Ensembled series are shown to outperform single-model assessments through increased consistency and stability. This study aims to test the improvement of precipitation estimates through the use of ensemble analysis for south and southwestern Turkey which is known to have complex climatic features due to varying topography and interacting climate forcings. The analysis covers an evaluation of the performance of eight regional climate models (RCMs) from the EUR-11 domain available from the CORDEX database. The historical outputs are evaluated for their representativeness of the current climate of the Mediterranean region and its surroundings in Turkey through a comparison with long-term monthly precipitation time series obtained from ground-based precipitation observations by the use of statistical performance indicators and Taylor diagrams. This is followed by a comparative evaluation of three ensemble methodologies, simple average of the models, multiple linear regression for superensemble, and artificial neural networks (ANN). The analysis results show that the overall performance of ensembled time series is better compared to individual RCMs. ANN generally provided the best performance when all RCMs are used as inputs. Improvement in the performance of ensembling due to the use of nonlinear models is further confirmed by fuzzy inference systems (FIS). Both ANN and FIS generated monthly precipitation time series with higher correlations with those of observations. However, extreme events are poorly represented in the ensembled time series, and this may result in inefficiency in the design of various water structures such as spillways and storm water drainage systems that are based on high return period events. Stormwater drainage networks are designed to reduce the risk of rainwater damage to the served area. The purpose of optimizing a stormwater drainage system is to reduce overall construction costs and to meet hydraulic design requirements. Currently, designs that rely on software or manual calculations are limited by the available time and the designer's capabilities. In fact, manual optimization for large networks consumes a lot of time and effort, and there is no guarantee that the optimal design is reached, also it is subject to human errors. In recent years, several researchers have focused on creating optimization design algorithms specifically for sewer and storm networks, such as genetic algorithm (GA), linear programming (LP), heuristic programming (HP),...etc. However, these studies were limited to covering one or two design parameters and constraints. Additionally, in some studies, the hydraulic performance of the designed network was not treated in a proper way, especially the water surface profile effects. So, the main objective of the study is to develop an effective hydraulic-based optimization algorithm (HBOA) that can dynamically get the optimal design with minimum total cost for a given storm network layout and meet all hydraulic requirements. To achieve this, a MATLAB code is created and coupled with SewerGEMS software that automatically simulates all expected optimization scenarios based on network hydraulic performance. The HBOA is validated economically and hydraulically using two benchmark examples from the literature. According to the economic validation, the total network cost generated by HBOA was the lowest when compared to the optimization methods found in the literature. During the hydraulic evaluation, it was observed that the optimization algorithm (GA-HP) used in the literature for the benchmark examples does not meet the hydraulic requirements where the networks are flooded, whereas HBOA meets the hydraulic requirements with minimal overall network cost. Also, the HBOA is applied to four real stormwater drainage networks that were already designed, constructed, and optimized manually. The four redesigned real cases using HBOA revealed a cost reduction of about 15% compared to the original designs, while consuming a few hours for the design and optimization processes. Finally, the developed HBOA is a robust, time-efficient, and cost-effective optimization and hydraulic design tool which could be used in the design of stormwater drainage networks with different design constraints with minimal human interference. Modifications to the landscape for urban expansion directly impact the natural hydrological dynamics in Urban Hydrographic Micro-basins (UHMs). This study aims to develop the Urban Flood Susceptibility Index (UFSI) from indicators pertinent to different spheres, considering both infiltration and surface runoff of rainwater, and apply it in UHMs of a municipality in the Midwest Region of Brazil. Historical records of urban floods available in information media are used to validate the UFSI. The methodology adopted involves the Analytical Hierarchical Process linked to the Geographic Information System. UFSI is composed of the following indicators: average slope (Sa), coefficient of compactness (Kc), drainage density (Dd), demographic density (Ddem), degree of surface permeability (DSP), susceptibility to production of sediment (SPS), daily precipitation (Pd), degree of canalization of watercourses (DCW), condition of storm drains (CSD), and rainwater retention devices (RRD). Therefore, USFI simultaneously includes morphometric, environmental, land use and occupation, and urban infrastructure indicators. Pd (0.16 for both dimensions) and DSP (0.15 for surface runoff and 0.26 for infiltration) indicators are the most significant for urban flood susceptibility in both analysed dimensions. Sa (0.15) and DCW (0.14) are relevant in relation to surface runoff, while RRD (0.13) and SPS (0.09) regarding to infiltration. UFSI and historical records of each UHM obtained strong correlation (r > 0.80), evidencing reliability and validation of the index. The UFSI can assist in the formulation of guidelines for land use and occupation and to indicate UHMs that require attention from the public authority for sustainable socioeconomic development. Hong Kong (HK), one of the world's most densely populated metropolises, is home to over 200 rivers and streams extending about 2500 km in length. During the 1970s–1990s, most of these rivers were converted into artificial canals, to which the local society pays little attention. Since the 2010s, the HK government has initiated river revitalization to enhance the social-environmental roles of rivers. This study employed a mixed research method, including literature and policy analysis, expert interviews, field visits, and a public survey, to identify key challenges in HK's Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM). The findings highlighted the lack of IRBM's institutional arrangements in HK, characterized by a fragmented 'one river, two systems' approach without both coordination and collaboration. The Water Supplies Department (WSD) impounds upland streams as reservoirs for securing the local water supply, while the Drainage Service Department (DSD) manages heavily channelized, culverted downstream serving as storm drains with diminished ecological functionality. One significant barrier to the implementation of IRBM in HK was the limited public participation, although our survey revealed a high level of public willingness to participate in river management. Presently, river revitalization efforts have achieved limited success, with ecological measures appearing mostly "cosmetic" and the conservation of freshwater biodiversity neglected. This further underscored the pressing need for the embracement of IRBM in HK to safeguard basin-wide freshwater ecosystems. Our survey also indicated low public awareness of river revitalization initiatives and widespread dissatisfaction with their outcomes. In conclusion, we proposed the development of IRBM in HK by instituting river basin coordination, prioritizing river ecosystem restoration in revitalization projects, and involving the public through tailored strategies. The burgeoning significance of urban floods in the context of evolving climate dynamics and shifting rainfall patterns underscores the exigency for comprehensive investigation and mitigation strategies. The study employs a multi-criteria assessment (MCE) approach and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate flood-vulnerable zones, wards, and sub-category-wise flood locations in Greater Mumbai. The AHP technique is used to evaluate flood-vulnerable impacting parameters such as rainfall (29.42%), slope (20.96%), land use/land cover (17.52%), vicinity to sewers and storm-water drainage (13.99%), vicinity to natural drainage (8.97%), vegetation (5.58%), and soil (3.56%). The study area is classified under different vulnerable categories as severe vulnerable (46.72%), high to very high (18.74%), and slight to moderate (34.54%). Researchers analysed 234 waterlogged locations, revealing that 85.46% (200 locations) were in the severe to very high vulnerability category, and only 14.52% (34 locations) were in the other three categories. Flood locations are more affected by slope (under the categories of < 5 m and 5.01–10 m), built-up land, sewers and storm water drainage (< 125 m), natural drainage (< 250 m), rainfall (< 2000 to 2200 mm), lowest dense vegetation, and coastal alluvium in soils. Damage or deterioration of water distribution or storm water drain pipeline systems create a problem of leakage, which has the potential to erode its surrounding soil. This erosion, if not detected in time, can form a large cavity in the ground and consequently results in catastrophic failure. This paper presents a detailed review of soil erosion due to damaged buried pipe using experimental and numerical evidence available in the literature. Herein, erosion is explained using two different flow possibilities, namely, infiltration and exfiltration. A comprehensive discussion on the method of investigation and the erosion mechanism, along with the governing parameters used in the investigation and their challenges, are presented. This review paper also discusses two other issues, that is, the rate of erosion and the volume of cavity formed due to erosion. Both the issues seem to be governed by the hydraulic gradient in the soil, the size of the defect in the pipe and the size of soil particles surrounding the defect. Important empirical and analytical methods which are used to predict the size of the cavity as well as the leakage rate and pressure drop, are also discussed. Physical modeling of precipitation at fine (sub-kilometer) spatial scales is computationally very expensive. This study develops a highly efficient framework for this task by coupling deep learning (DL) and physical modeling. This framework is developed and tested using regional climate simulations performed over a domain covering Montreal and adjoining regions, for the summers of 2015–2020, at 2.5 km and 250 m resolutions. The DL framework uses a recurrent approach and considers atmospheric physical processes, such as advection, to generate high-resolution information from low-resolution data, which enables it to recreate fine details and produce temporally consistent fields. The DL framework generates realistic high-resolution precipitation estimates, including intense short-duration precipitation events, which allows it to be applied in engineering problems, such as evaluating the climate resiliency of urban storm drainage systems. Abstract—The results of a bacterioplankton study (total abundance; saprophytic, hydrocarbon oxidizing, and phenol resistant bacteria; total microbial count; and coliform bacteria) in an urbanized tributary of Lake Onego in 2015 are presented. The lower reaches of the Lososinka River flow over the territory of the city of Petrozavodsk (Karelia) and receive 14 untreated storm runoff streams from the municipal storm sewers. Differences in the temporal abundance dynamics of bacteria, which are indicators of oil pollution, the sanitary condition, and saprobity, were found between the reference and urban parts of the river. These variations are not related to the hydrological and thermal regime of the river and reflect the impact of the pollutant discharge from the urban area on the formation of the bacterial community of the river. The study revealed a significant increase in all the studied indicators of the quantitative development of bacterioplankton in the urban part of the river as compared to the reference part. The number of heterotrophic bacteria of various ecological–trophic groups decreases in the lake water by a factor of 8–16 already at a distance of 500 m from the mouth of the river due to dilution. A significant decrease in the numbers of hydrocarbon oxidizing bacteria in the river water and an increase in sanitary-indicative microorganisms are shown to have occurred over four years. Within the city limits of Petrozavodsk, the Lososinka River has been assessed as polluted with petroleum products, as well as organic substances of fecal origin and unfit for recreation based on the level of the indicator bacteria. Nigerian cities have experienced great physical development in the last three decades in terms of building, construction and reconstruction of roads, offices, markets and stores, manufacturing industries and others without any appreciable infrastructures such as drainages for roads and canals to safely drain storm waters. All these have made floods to be a serious seasonal challenge that plague many communities in Nigeria including communities in Anambra West Local Government, Anambra State, Nigeria. Hence, this research assessed the socio-economic effects of flooding in some selected communities of Anambra West Local Government Area South-East Nigeria and the imperative steps taken by the government and host communities to reduce the effects of this flood menace for sustainable development. The objectives are: to examine the socio-economic activities of the inhabitants of the study area; to determine the incidence of flood in the study area communities; to determine the socio-economic effects of flooding and the coping strategies for resilience adaptation to flood incidence in the study area. Principal component analysis, Chi-square, Linear regression and analysis of variance techniques were employed in the data analysis. The study revealed the significant pattern and the critical socio-economic effects of flooding on the communities which includes: animal production, crop production, fishing, food availability/affordability, employment, health/loss of human resources, loss of infrastructures and household properties. The study found that, there is significant relationship between flood incidence (frequency) and the socio-economic effects in the study area which implies that, an increase in the flood incidence has an increasing socio-economic effects on the study area. Urban flood risks in Zimbabwe emanate from the twin challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change. Most urban settlements have become increasingly anchorages, which require increased adaptation through the sustainable management of urban storm water. Building on the Woodlands Park case in Gweru, this paper locates the problem of recurrent floods to the impasse between residents and council authorities on the one hand, and climatic risks reinforcing underlying rapid urbanisation challenges on the other hand. The purpose of the study was to gather the views of residents and their role in seeking solutions to the storm water management challenges. Utilising a mixed methodology, insights were drawn from field observations and purposive selection of 50 household representatives, triangulated with the views of officials from Gweru City Council (GCC). Data were obtained through in-depth interviews using semi-structured questions and analysed using thematic content analysis where participants’ views were grouped into themes according to their resemblance. By utilising Vensim PLE 7.3 Software, we applied systems thinking theory to reveal the interconnectedness of the factors leading to heightened storm water challenges. The findings showed that Woodlands Park lacks proper drainage installations that meet the standards of GCC. Some residents use personal resources to make storm drains on their yards but with differing structural dimensions. The local drainage system gets choked by silt and illegally dumped litter. Municipal authorities do not undertake routine annual drain reticulation operations, exposing houses to flooding. We argue that municipal authorities, land developers and the residents have not equitably collated their efforts to create bargained storm water management initiatives. Urbanization can negatively impact natural protected areas near or surrounded by cities, and such impacts include untreated wastewater discharge, leachates from dumpsters, e-waste, and road dust. In this research, we show that not only large cities with industry are prone to be polluted, but also young touristic cities with high population increase rate can suffer from urban contamination. We evaluated metal pollution in a natural protected area within a 50-year-old city without conventional industry that was likely contaminated by the urban sprawl around the protected area. We tested water, zooplankton, sediment and plant samples for metallic elements to evaluate their bioaccumulation in zooplankton, enrichment factors and geoaccumulation index values in sediments, and translocation factors in plants. Finally, we evaluated the ecological risk due to metal contamination. Metals at levels above our detection limit (20 µg/L) were not found in the water and zooplankton samples. The sediments and plants in the storm drain section of the protected area had a greater concentration of metals and wastewater indicators (coliforms) than those in the rest of the lagoon. Moreover, signs of Al, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr, Pb, and Ti contamination were found in the plant tissues. We estimated that the ecological risk of this natural protected area surrounded by the city of Cancun (Mexico) ranged from mild to strong, with Zn being the metal of most concern. The results highlight that young touristic cities around the world will endure contamination from urban sources; signs or early warnings of contamination must be identified to prevent and resolve such issues. During rainfall, phosphorus in drainage pipe sediments is easily washed and released. This study investigates the migration of phosphorus between sediments and water in storm and sewage sewers, the microbial community structure in sediments, and phosphorus transformation under biological action. Results showed that when the initial concentration of phosphorus in stormwater (water column) in storm sewer was high (1–2 mg/L), the total phosphorus (TP) level decreased in the water column but increased in the sediments, showing a trend of phosphorus migration from the water column to the sediments. Moreover, under high concentration (2 mg/L), the TP level decreased by 83.19% in the water column within 210 min, which was greater than 64.9% of the medium-concentration stormwater (1 mg/L). In sewage sewer, when the initial concentration of phosphorus in sewage was about 2 mg/L, phosphorus would migrate from the sediments and interstitial water to the water column because of the high concentration of phosphorus in the sediments. In addition, the variation in phosphorus was caused not only by concentration gradient but also by microbial communities. Phosphate accumulating organisms, such as Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Actinobacteria, existed in the storm and sewage sewers, which could ingest dissolved reactive phosphorus in the water column and interstitial water and convert it into phosphorus in organisms. In storm sewers, Acidimicrobiia transferred phosphorus from the water column and interstitial water to the sediments through biochemical reactions and physical adsorption. In sewage sewers, organic acids secreted by Clostridia, Bacteroidia, and Bacilli could dissolve some insoluble phosphorus in sediments and then transfer them to interstitial water. Agricultural pesticides transported to surface waters pose a major risk for aquatic ecosystems. Modelling studies indicate that the inlets of agricultural storm drainage systems can considerably increase the connectivity of surface runoff and pesticides to surface waters. These model results have however not yet been validated with field measurements. In this study, we measured discharge and concentrations of 51 pesticides in four out of 158 storm drainage inlets of a small Swiss agricultural catchment (2.8 km2) and in the receiving stream. For this, we performed an event-triggered sampling during 19 rain events and collected plot-specific pesticide application data. Our results show that agricultural storm drainage inlets strongly influence surface runoff and pesticide transport in the study catchment. The concentrations of single pesticides in inlets amounted up to 62 µg/L. During some rain events, transport through single inlets caused more than 10% of the stream load of certain pesticides. An extrapolation to the entire catchment suggests that during selected events on average 30 to 70% of the load in the stream was transported through inlets. Pesticide applications on fields with surface runoff or spray drift potential to inlets led to increased concentrations in the corresponding inlets. Overall, this study corroborates the relevance of such inlets for pesticide transport by establishing a connectivity between fields and surface waters, and by their potential to deliver substantial pesticide loads to surface waters. Federal regulations for municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s) in the United States have been in place since 1990 as part of the Nation Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), aiming to reduce sediment and pollutant loads originating from urban areas. However, small-municipality (Phase II) MS4s frequently grapple with several challenges, resulting in a lack of stakeholder buy-in and actionable stormwater management plans. We identify five common challenges concerning MS4 requirements based on literature review, professional experience, and feedback solicited from stakeholders, municipal managers, and fellow professionals and offer real-world examples of efficient, effective MS4 frameworks and/or solutions. The five challenges are summarized as beliefs that: (1) agricultural land use is the largest pollutant contributor and the root cause of pollution problems; (2) stormwater management only benefits downstream communities; (3) large, expensive projects are required to comply with regulations; (4) maintenance, monitoring, and inspection of best management practices (BMPs) is overwhelmingly complex and expensive; and (5) a lack of direct funding makes complying with regulations an impossible task. These challenges are universal in nature for Phase II MS4 permittees and can create real barriers for effective stormwater management. However, we found many examples of methods or techniques to effectively address these five specific challenges, making them well-suited and important for discussion. BMPs can create tangible improvements for surrounding communities (e.g., reduced streambank erosion and flooding), and improved understanding of the structure and options within the MS4 program will help small municipalities make informed choices about management plans. Background: Stormwater is water resulting from precipitation events and snowmelt running off the urban landscape, collecting in storm sewers, and typically being released into receiving water bodies through outfalls with minimal to no treatment. Despite a growing body of evidence observing its deleterious pollution impacts, stormwater management and treatment in cold climates remains limited, partly due to a lack of quality and loading data and modeling parameters. This study examines the quality of stormwater discharging during the summer season in a cold-climate, semi-arid Canadian city (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Results: Seven stormwater outfalls with mixed-land-use urban catchments > 100 km2 were sampled for four summer (June–August 2019) storm events and analyzed for a suite of quality parameters, including total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), metals, and targeted polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In addition, assessment of stormwater toxicity was done using the two toxicity assays Raphidocelis subcapitata (algae) and Vibrio fischeri (bacteria). Notable single-event, single-outfall contaminant pulses included of arsenic (420 µg/L), cadmium (16.4 µg/L), zinc (924 µg/L), fluorene (4.95 µg/L), benzo[a]pyrene (0.949 µg/L), pyrene (0.934 µg/L), phenanthrene (1.39 µg/L), and anthracene (1.40 µg/L). The IC50 in both R. subcapitata and V. fischeri was observed, if at all, above expected toxicity thresholds for individual contaminant species. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed no clear trends for individual sampling sites or sampling dates. In contrast, parameters were correlated with each other in groups including DOC, COD, TSS, and reduced algal toxicity; and total dissolved solids (TDS), sum of metals, and pH. Conclusions: In general, stormwater characteristics were similar to those of previous studies, with a bulk of contamination carried by the first volume of runoff, influenced by a combination of rainfall depth, antecedent dry period, land use, and activity within the catchment. Roads, highways, and industrial areas contribute the bulk of estimated contaminant loadings. More intensive sampling strategies are necessary to contextualize stormwater data in the context of contaminant and runoff volume peaks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In cities, the existence of impervious structures, such as road pavements, parking lots, footpaths, sidewalks, and roofs, can limit the magnitude of rainfall infiltration greatly. Stormwater run-off in storm sewer often dominates, which can cause problems of urban flooding easily during heave rainfalls. In rain and sewage diversion, perforated storm sewer is proposed to enable the occurrence of stormwater infiltration into the ground, which can change the prolonged drought-like condition. Model-scale laboratory tests are conducted to assess the infiltration process of water through drainage holes around the sewer circumference. The experimental data are also used to calibrate a numerical model, after which numerical parametric analysis is carried out. It is found that the feature of drainage holes only influences the wetting front in the initial stage of infiltration. In the end, the egg-shaped contour of wetting front with greater influencing zone below the sewer is obtained. The cumulative infiltration with time can be described by an infiltration model, which is positively correlated with the diameter and the number of drainage holes. The optimal opening ratio is recommended as 0.25%, which can provide the most effective drainage capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Optimization models are developed for simultaneously determining the pipe layout and the pipe design for storm sewer systems. The pipe design process includes computation of commercial diameters, slopes, and crown elevations for the storm sewer pipes. The optimization models aim to minimize the total costs of the layout and the pipe design for most of system elements. The optimization models are formulated as a 0–1 Integer Nonlinear Programming problem and solved using the General Algebraic Modeling System without the use of heuristic models which were characteristic of all previous models for the simultaneous determine of the pipe layout and pipe design of sewer networks. The models are based upon two different optimization approaches: (1) considers one or more commercial diameters of pipe connecting two manholes and (2) considers only one commercial diameter in a pipe connecting two manholes. The commercial diameters, pipe slopes, crown elevations, and total costs of the storm sewer system were compared for the two approaches using an example that illustrates the savings in cost by allowing multiple pipe sizes. The two new optimization modeling approaches developed herein can simultaneously determine the minimum cost pipe design (commercial diameters, slopes, and crown elevations) and pipe layout of storm sewer systems and satisfy all design constraints. Mosquitoes transmit several infectious diseases that pose significant threat to human health. Temperature along with other environmental factors at breeding and resting locations play a role in the organismal development and abundance of mosquitoes. Accurate analysis of mosquito population dynamics requires information on microclimatic conditions at breeding and resting locations. In this study, we develop a regression model to characterize microclimatic temperature based on ambient environmental conditions. Data were collected by placing sensor loggers at resting and breeding locations such as storm drains across Houston, TX. Corresponding weather data was obtained from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website. Features extracted from these data sources along with contextual information on location were used to develop a Generalized Linear Model for predicting microclimate temperatures. We also analyzed mosquito population dynamics for Aedes albopictus under ambient and microclimatic conditions using system dynamic (SD) modelling to demonstrate the need for accurate microclimatic temperatures in population models. The microclimate prediction model had an R2 value of ~ 95% and average prediction error of ~ 1.5 °C indicating that microclimate temperatures can be reliably estimated from the ambient environmental conditions. SD model analysis indicates that some microclimates in Texas could result in larger populations of juvenile and adult Aedes albopictus mosquitoes surviving the winter without requiring dormancy. An extensive network of storm water conveyance systems in urban areas, often referred to as the "underground storm drain system" (USDS), serves as significant production habitats for mosquitoes. Knowledge of whether USDS habitats are suitable for newly introduced dengue vectors Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus will help guide surveillance and control efforts. To determine whether the USDS functions as a suitable larval habitat for Culex, Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in southern California, we examined mosquito habitat utilization and larval survivorship using laboratory microcosm studies. The data showed that USDS constituted 4.1% of sampled larval habitats for Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, and 22.0% for Cx. quinquefasciatus. Furthermore, USDS water collected in the summer completely inhibited Aedes larval development, but yielded a 15.0% pupation rate for Cx. quinquefasciatus. Food supplementation in the microcosms suggests that nutrient deficiency, toxins and other factors in the USDS water led to low success or complete failure of larval development. These results suggest that USDS habitats are currently not major productive larval habitats for Aedes mosquitoes in southern California. Our findings prompt inclusion of assessments of pupal productivity in USDS habitats and adult mosquito resting sites in the mosquito surveillance program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Partially filled pipes have many applications in hydraulic and environmental engineering; such as sewer and storm water collection pipes and circular culverts. Hydraulic jump can lead to scouring at hydraulic structures and thus excess energy should be dissipated to prevent scour and erosion. Calculation of conjugate depths in circular pipes and culverts is important in hydraulic engineering. The conjugate flow depths are commonly used to estimate the length of the hydraulic jump and the energy loss in the jump. Available relationships to estimate the conjugate depths in circular pipes are not accurate and wide application range. In comparison to easily available numerical solutions, a closed-form solution is a function of all input independent variables; and thus the dependence of the conjugate depth on each input independent variable can be easily interpreted. This study presents explicit solutions for the conjugate depths (pre- and post-jump depths) in partially filled pipes. The proposed solutions are examined over a wide range of the Froude number and geometric conditions, providing satisfactory estimations when compared with the exact solution obtained from the specific force relation. If the prejump flow depth of the hydraulic jump is known, the postjump flow depth can be determined using the proposed solution with a maximum relative error less than 1.4%. Inversely, if postjump flow depth is known, the prejump flow depth can be determined with a maximum relative error less than 2.3%. Intensifying urban stormwater runoff and pollution caused by urbanization and climate change threatens property and lives in cities around the world. Low-impact development (LID) is an effective approach to improve urban flood resistance, but there is a lack of quantitative evaluation criteria to determine the best scenario in the newly built and built-up urban areas. In this study, based on the Fuzzy Comprehensive Evaluation method (FCE), a multi-index evaluation system is established to quantify the LID performance for the environment, technology, economy, and society. For overcoming subjective arbitrariness, the Criteria Importance Though Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods are used to evaluate the weight of each evaluation index. The proposed method is demonstrated for the Xi'an City, China. Results show that the integrated configuration of green roof, infiltration pavement and grass swale has the best comprehensive efficiency under the proposed method. More specifically, the allocation of different LID combinations in the newly built area can effectively manage the flooding in this area. However, the comprehensive efficiency of increasing the diameter of the storm sewer is optimal in the built-up area. The increased pipe diameter can discharge more rainwater through the urban storm sewer and mitigate overflow. A multi-index evaluation framework beyond the traditional subjective evaluation standard is established, which can quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of LID facilities. U.S. public university campuses are held directly responsible for compliance with many of the same federal- and state-level environmental regulations as cities, including stormwater management. While operating as 'cities within cities' in many respects, campuses face unique constraints in achieving stormwater regulatory compliance. To compare the abilities of campuses to comply with stormwater regulations to municipalities, we conduct mixed-methods research using primary data from five University of California (UC) campuses. Public universities constituted over 20% of California's "nontraditional" permittees under the municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) regulation regime in 2013. We utilize semi-structured interviews with campus and regulatory officials, a survey of campus students and staff around support and willingness to pay for innovative stormwater management, and content analysis of campus stormwater management documents to examine challenges to public university stormwater compliance. We find that, despite their progressive environmental practices in other areas like energy and water conservation, even as compared to cities, stormwater management practices on the evaluated campuses are constrained by several factors: infrastructure financing limitations, lack of transparent and coordinated decision-making, a lack of campus resident involvement, and regulatory inflexibility. In this research, a novel framework is proposed for temporal downscaling rainfall records to address the problem of insufficient temporal resolution of rainfall during the refined hydrological simulation. This framework consists of three main steps: (1) The existence of the fractal features of the original rainfall series with different temporal scales (month, week, day, h) can be judged by the dominant frequency of Hilbert marginal spectrum, and geometric shape similarity of different time scales on the basis of the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD). (2) Based on the previous fractal interpolation theory, an improved algorithm that couples with a threshold to control the number of interpolation points for the specific interpolation intervals and a parameter to captures the high intermittentness of rainfall series is developed, which can achieve the conservation of the total rainfall quantity. (3) EEMD method is applied again to compare and evaluate the fit of the downscaled records to observed records from the perspective of IMF components, and various statistical indicators (e.g., root mean square error, correlation coefficient, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient, fractal dimension) are applied to quantify the performance of improved fractal interpolation algorithm. Three sets of observed hourly rainfall series (from 2016 to 2018) of Chaohu city, Anhui, China, were investigated using the new framework, EF (EEMD + improved fractal interpolation algorithm). First, in order to validate the applicability of the EF framework, the observed hourly rainfall sets were aggregated into daily, weekly, and monthly sets and subsequently, the EF framework was employed to downscale above sets back into daily and hourly scale. Then, a long-duration rainfall event with hourly scale in early July 2016 was downscaled to 5-min time series using EF framework and equipartition method, respectively. Finally, simulation results based on MIKE URBAN software were compared for EF framework and equipartition method. The results of our work reveal that: (a) EEMD is a reasonable identification tool for fractal characteristics of rainfall records. (b) the improved fractal interpolation algorithm not only reasonably preserves key statistical indices (e.g., low-order moments, autocorrelation, power spectra), but also captures the overall trends and inherent details of the rainfall. The hazard of pluvial flooding is largely influenced by the spatial and temporal dependence characteristics of precipitation. When extreme precipitation possesses strong spatial dependence, the risk of flooding is amplified due to catchment factors such as topography that cause runoff accumulation. Temporal dependence can also increase flood risk as storm water drainage systems operating at capacity can be overwhelmed by heavy precipitation occurring over multiple days. While transformed Gaussian processes are common choices for modeling precipitation, their weak tail dependence may lead to underestimation of flood risk. Extreme value models such as the generalized Pareto processes for threshold exceedances and max-stable models are attractive alternatives, but are difficult to fit when the number of observation sites is large, and are of little use for modeling the bulk of the distribution, which may also be of interest to water management planners. While the atmospheric dynamics governing precipitation are complex and difficult to fully incorporate into a parsimonious statistical model, non-mechanistic analogue methods that approximate those dynamics have proven to be promising approaches to capturing the temporal dependence of precipitation. In this paper, we present a Bayesian analogue method that leverages large, synoptic-scale atmospheric patterns to make precipitation forecasts. Changing spatial dependence across varying intensities is modeled as a mixture of spatial Student-t processes that can accommodate both strong and weak tail dependence. The proposed model demonstrates improved performance at capturing the distribution of extreme precipitation over Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) 5.2 forecasts. Background: Inappropriate dry-weather misconnections into storm drainage system are a demanding environmental problem worldwide, which leads to unexpected dry-weather discharge into surface waters. It often costs a large amount of manpower and resources to identify the source of misconnections and estimate its contributions. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of quantifying proportional source contribution in a storm drainage system with dry-weather misconnections from domestic sewage and river water inflow, using rapid and low-cost fluorescence spectroscopy methods. For this purpose, samples of both misconnection sources and outflows of storm drainage system were collected and analyzed in a downtown catchment of Shanghai, China. Results: Results showed that fluorescent peak intensity of tryptophan-like T1 in domestic sewage (802 ± 126 a.u.) was significantly higher than that in urban river water (57 ± 12 a.u.), while fluorescent peak intensities of tryptophan-like T2 in urban river water (732 ± 304 a.u.) was much higher than that in domestic sewage (261 ± 64 a.u.) due to increased algal activity in the local river and upstream inflow chemistry. However, only peak T2 passed the conservative behavior test in the incubation experiments, which could be used as a fingerprint for quantitatively identifying the misconnections. We further developed a Bayesian fluorescence mass balance model (FMBM) to infer the percentage of dry-weather misconnections into the storm drainage system as a function of fluorescence intensities of peak T2 in the samples of sources and outflow. It was found that the maximum posteriori probability estimate of the percentage of river water intrusion into the storm drains was up to 20.8% in this site, which was validated by the results of on-site investigation. Conclusion: Our findings implied that in situ fluorescent sensors and Bayesian FMBM for the fingerprint fluorescence peak could be applied to fast track inappropriate dry-weather misconnections into storm drainage system qualitatively and quantitatively with low costs. Flooding and water logging possess severe hazards to human population in many parts of the world. Mumbai, the study area, is one of the cities in India and has been frequently affected by floods and landslides causing heavy loss of life and property. Enormous concretization and 150-year-old storm water drainage system of Mumbai have led to water logging and flood-like conditions which leads to natural hazard. The objective of this study is to identify the flood and landslide spots and to prepare the map by using GIS software. The study also consists of comparing potential of QGIS and Arc-GIS software in the form of data analysis and thematic map creation. From this study, it is clear that large-scale reshaping took place to complete the reclamation project which makes all those areas prone to various hazards. In assessment of flood and landslide spots, many significant points were revealed: the average elevation of Mumbai is 14 m, and also majority of the flood spots have an elevation range between 5 and 14 m. The analysis of the database generated in QGIS software also revealed that significant numbers of flood spots are mostly found in the reclamation zone and the landslide spots near base of hill. This study indicates that the current situation may trigger disastrous conditions in the future which need intervention from government bodies, institutions and NGOs to prepare proper disaster management plans to help mitigate this situation. To mitigate the problem of water logging, it is required to drain off the water into the ground. This paper presents the first record of Luticola vanheurckii Van de Vijver & Levkov, outside of the type locality (second record in the Europe). Authors present habitat characteristic of the species, with LM and SEM micrographs. Luticola vanheurckii was found in a small outflow of water from storm sewers in Stalowa Wola (SE Poland). Luticola vanheurckii occurred only rarely (0-5 valves per slide), in a small, shallow puddle which was supplied by the water from the outflow. This species was recorded in sediments and on plants submerged in water with a wide range of conductivity (347-22,100 μS cm−1), chloride content (64.56-6195.0 mg l−1) and sodium ions (43.04-3789.1 mg l−1). Global climate change and urbanization development have changed the hydrological environment dramatically. Flood control, non-point source pollution control, and comprehensive utilization of water resources are facing new challenges. On the basis of the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), an approach for design rainfall pattern selection in precipitation data-lacked region containing model establishing, response analysis and design rainfall pattern screening was put forward. And the responses of the hydrologic, hydraulic and environmental of 2-commercial community mode are explored by using a simulation analysis under different rainfall patterns in this study. Based on the worst principle, the Chicago rainfall pattern was selected for the above-mentioned evaluation indexes at different reoccurrence periods. Results showed that, (1) in traditional development (TD), the values of surface runoff, peak flow and depth of outlet, and total pollution loading were at their maximum at the Chicago rainfall pattern; and in low-impact development (LID), the reduction rates of surface runoff and total pollution loading were at their minimum at the Huff4 rainfall pattern, and the reduction rate of peak flow was at its minimum at the P&C rainfall pattern; then design storm patterns at different simulation targets were obtained. (2) For the Chicago rainfall pattern, the reduction rates of various evaluation indexes decreased while the reoccurrence period increased, and the reduction rate of peak flow was more sensitive to high reoccurrence period rainfall than surface runoff. (3) After the setting of LID measures, the control effect of storm water and non-point source pollution gathered better results from the increase of permeable area and the change of microtopography, as well as from the physical and biological action. Nitrate contamination of ground and surface waters causes environmental pollution and human health problems in many parts of the world. This study tests the nitrate removal efficiencies of two ion exchange resins (Dowex 21K XLT and iron-modified Dowex 21K XLT (Dowex-Fe)) and two chemically modified bio-adsorbents (amine-grafted corn cob (AG corn cob) and amine-grafted coconut copra (AG coconut copra)) using a dynamic adsorption treatment system. A submerged membrane (microfiltration) adsorption hybrid system (SMAHS) was used for the continuous removal of nitrate with a minimal amount of adsorbents. The efficiency of membrane filtration flux and replacement rate of adsorbent were studied to determine suitable operating conditions to maintain the effluent nitrate concentration below the WHO drinking standard limit of 11.3 mg N/L. The volume of water treated and the amount of nitrate adsorbed per gramme of adsorbent for all four flux tested were in the order Dowex-Fe > Dowex > AG coconut copra > AG corn cob. The volumes of water treated (L/g adsorbent) were 0.91 and 1.85, and the amount of nitrate removed (mg N/g adsorbent) were 9.8 and 22.2 for AG corn cob and Dowex-Fe, respectively, at a flux of 15 L/(m2/h). The physicochemical properties and heavy metal(loid) concentrations of the river water both fluctuate greatly along the river affected by mining activities, and the transportation of heavy metal(loid)s is therefore more complicated than unpolluted river. Dissolved and particulate heavy metal(loid)s in a river polluted by mining activities were measured to study their temporal-spatial variation and partitioning. The concentrations of dissolved arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were considerably high at the sites near the mine area. Notably, dissolved As at most sites were higher than the Chinese quality criterion of class II for surface water indicating high environmental risk. Mn and Pb at most sites and Ni at a part of the sites mainly existed in the particulate phase. For other heavy metal(loid)s, i.e., As, Cd, chromium (Cr), and Zn, the particulate phase was extremely high at the sites near the mine area and responsible for heavy metal(loid) transport. Significant correlations between particulate heavy metal(loid)s and temperature and electrical conductivity (EC) were found. However, the partitioning of heavy metal(loid)s did not significantly relate to the river water properties, due to most heavy metal(loid)s in suspended particulate matter (SPM) are stable and affected less by water properties. Except for Cr and Ni, other heavy metal(loid)s showed high concentrations in sediments, and considerable Cd, Mn, and Zn existed in exchangeable and carbonate fraction indicating high environmental risk. The environmental assessment of SPM showed that Cd, Zn, and As, as the main pollutants in SPM, all reached extremely polluted level at the sites near the mine area, and the environmental risk of heavy metal(loid)s in SPM was higher during dry season than that during wet season. This article describes a stochastic method to calculate the annual pollutant loads and its application over several years at the outlet of three catchments drained by separate storm sewers. A stochastic methodology using Monte Carlo simulations is proposed for assessing annual pollutant load, as well as the associated uncertainties, from a few event sampling campaigns and/or continuous turbidity measurements (representative of the total suspended solids concentration (TSS)). Indeed, in the latter case, the proposed method takes into account the correlation between pollutants and TSS. The developed method was applied to data acquired within the French research project 'INOGEV' (innovations for a sustainable management of urban water) at the outlet of three urban catchments drained by separate storm sewers. Ten or so event sampling campaigns for a large range of pollutants (46 pollutants and 2 conventional water quality parameters: TSS and total organic carbon (TOC)) are combined with hundreds of rainfall events for which, at least one among three continuously monitored parameters (rainfall intensity, flow rate, and turbidity) is available. Results obtained for the three catchments show that the annual pollutant loads can be estimated with uncertainties ranging from 10 to 60%, and the added value of turbidity monitoring for lowering the uncertainty is demonstrated. A low inter-annual and inter-site variability of pollutant loads, for many of studied pollutants, is observed with respect to the estimated uncertainties, and can be explained mainly by annual precipitation. Jakkur Lake in the city of Bengaluru covers an approximate area of 55 hectares and primarily receives inflows from the Jakkur sewage treatment plant (STP) and an open storm drain. Jakkur STP discharges an average of 10 million litres of treated water daily (MLD) into the lake. The open drain discharges about 0.5 MLD of raw sewage into the lake. In the absence of environmental flows it becomes critical to assess the impact of nutrient flux on the quality of water, and design cost effective treatment solutions to address the issues of lake water quality. As part of this study, we have assessed the impact of these two primary inflows on the overall water quality of Jakkur Lake. The results have shown that nutrient inflows have led to the increase of chlorophyll-a levels, eventually causing hypereutrophication of Jakkur lake. We have also used simple mass balance approach to assess the contributions of in-lake activities (sedimentation and reaction) on removal of nutrients from the lake. We have concluded that the phosphorus load has to be reduced by approximately 96% from the current levels to prevent algal blooms within Jakkur Lake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To probe the overflow pollution of separate storm drains with inappropriate sewage entries, in terms of the relationship between sewage entries and the corresponding dry-weather and wet-weather overflow, the monitoring activities were conducted in a storm drainage system in the Shanghai downtown area (374 ha). In this study site, samples from inappropriately entered dry-weather sewage and the overflow due to storm pumps operation on dry-weather and wet-weather days were collected and then monitored for six water quality constituents. It was found that overflow concentrations of dry-weather period could be higher than those of wet-weather period; under wet-weather period, the overflow concentrations of storm drains were close to or even higher than that of combined sewers. Relatively strong first flush mostly occurred under heavy rain that satisfied critical rainfall amount, maximum rainfall intensity, and maximum pumping discharge, while almost no first flush effect or only weak first flush effect was found for the other rainfall events. Such phenomenon was attributed to lower in-line pipe storage as compared to that of the combined sewers, and serious sediment accumulation within the storm pipes due to sewage entry. For this kind of system, treating a continuous overflow rate is a better strategy than treating the maximum amount of early part of the overflow. Climate change is expected to exacerbate the extremes in the climate variables. Being prone to harsh climate impacts, it is very crucial to study extreme rainfall-induced flooding for short durations over regions that are rapidly growing. One way to study the extremes is by the application of the Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves. The annual maximum rainfall intensity (AMRI) characteristics are often used to construct these IDF curves that are being used in several infrastructure designs for urban areas. Thus, there is a need to obtain high temporal and spatial resolution rainfall information. Many urban areas of developing countries lack long records of short-duration rainfall. The shortest duration obtained is normally at a daily scale/24 h. Thus, it is very crucial to find a methodology to construct IDF curves for short-duration rainfall (sub-daily) for these urban areas. Vietnam is a developing country with rapidly increasing population as well as urbanization. The fast extension of urban area that does not have adequate preparedness to cope with climate change is certainly a big risk to life and economy. The limitation in studying impacts over many regions of Vietnam is the need for robust and sufficient data, both spatial and temporal. To overcome this limitation, this paper describes constructing IDF curves using 6 hourly rainfall AMRI output from a regional climate model (RCM) that downscaled a global climate model (GCM) output at high spatial and temporal resolutions. The study region is Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The sub-daily IDF curves for current and future climate for Hanoi were constructed from 1 to 24 h based on the simple scaling approach. The findings indicate that it is likely that Hanoi might experience more flooding conditions in the future with the AMRI increasing between 34 and 48% for all return periods from 10 to 200 years. The methodology adopted in this paper is suitable for similar ungauged areas elsewhere and will provide useful information in devising adequate planning strategies for drainage designs. Over time, many natural drains for storm water have turned into open sewers due to the absence of proper sewage systems in Rawalpindi city of Pakistan. The 'Nala Lai' is now a fully open sewer that Rawalpindi relies on to get its waste out. In this study, we use the Hedonic property value method to estimate that how disamenity of open sewer system, affect housing prices. We provide estimates of the benefits of converting the open system into a closed sewer system. We find that house rents decrease by approximately 10 % if there is an open sewer (nali) by the house. House rents also increase for homes located further away from the main open drain (Nala Lai)-e.g. a house located 400 m away from the main open drain enjoys a 12 % increase in rent because of its distance. Sewer smell has a depressing effect on rent in those areas where smell remains constant throughout the day. The results suggest that residents are willing to pay to be away from bad odor emanating from the open sewerage system. City planners need to take this into account and consider installing sewerage pipes in open sewer areas, which would change the nature of Nala Lai from a disamenity to an amenity. To determine the feasibility of using a dam-break generated flow from the sea into a storm-drain to aid in the regeneration of iron particles that control the production of HS in the storm-drain, a laboratory experimental investigation is carried out to measure the regeneration potential and the detailed hydrodynamics of the dam-break generated flow that causes the regeneration. The experiments are carried out using a reservoir of essentially infinite size, the sea, and a channel of limited width and adverse slope 1:20, the storm-drain. The regeneration experiments confirmed the ability of the dam-break generated flow to aid in the regeneration of the iron particles, however the regeneration potential varies from good to poor with distance away from the gate into the channel. The detailed measurements of the hydrodynamics highlighted that the dam-break generated flow from an infinite reservoir diverges little during the first uprush, has much smaller velocities during the first backwash and includes significant free surface waves. An initially wet channel bed reduces the flux into the channel. Close to the gate the flow depth increases more quickly but the velocity, and therefore the regeneration potential, is smaller. In this study, we present a multi-level and modular model for urban flood. It consists of four modules which simulate: (1) two-dimensional (2D) flow routing on communities, (2) 2D flow routing on road networks, (3) 2D flow routing on river network, and (4) one-dimensional (1D) flow routing on sewer system. The four modules are coupled by pumping stations, gutter inlets, and procedures. The gates or pumping stations connect the sewer system and the river network, allowing volume exchange between underground pipes and river network. The gutter inlets connect the sewer system and the river network, allowing volume exchange between the road network and underground pipes. The consistent treatment has also been included between the community areas and sewer system. The coupling among the four modules not only captures the interaction between surface and subsurface components, but also divides the surface open channels into community areas flow, road network flow and river network flow. Therefore, it greatly improves the calculation efficiency and accuracy. A catchment in Hexi District of Tianjin City, China, is used as the study case to validate the model. The simulated results agree well with the measurements in the following four aspects: the water levels of the Jin River, water depth at feature points, waterlog conditions in two important areas, and water balance. In urban environments, catch basins serve as major developmental and resting sites for anthropophilic and zoophilic mosquitoes. However, the use of this habitat is inconsistent, with abundance of larvae varying significantly across catch basins at a fine spatial scale. During seasonal summer investigations on mosquito species composition, their spatial and temporal distribution and the environmental characteristic of the breeding sites in the underground storm drain systems of the Wrocław urban area (SW Poland) were assessed from May to September in 2012-2013. The study was conducted in order to develop a rational strategy to control mosquito populations and prevent the potential human exposure to mosquito-transmitted pathogens. Mosquito larvae and pupae were collected and identified weekly from 100 regularly inspected street catch basins located in the town center. All existing and potential breeding habitats in the study area were recorded using a GPS receiver (Magellan MobileMapper CX) and transferred to the computer database. Collected data on the geographical location of inspected breeding places, water quality parameters in inspected catch basins, daily temperature, and precipitation were imposed on orthophotomap in ArcGIS (ESRI, USA). Water quality parameters including pH, electrical conductivity, and water temperature were measured by standard methods. Chemical water analysis of cations (Na, NH, K, Mg, Ca) and anions (Cl, NO, NO, SO) were carried out using Waters Alliance high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) 2695 with 432 Conductivity Detector and 2998 Photodiode Array Detector, an IC-Pak Anion HR column (glauconate/borate eluent) and IC-Pak Cation M/D column (EDTA/HNO eluent). Over two seasonal studies and 3739 samplings in total, 3669 mosquito larvae and 274 pupae/1 dip (from 0 to 110 individuals/dip) were collected by dipper. Culex pipiens s.l. (L.) and Cx. torrentium (Martini) prevailed at all catch basins of the study area as the predominant species. In all examined catch basins, autogenous individuals dominated by far. Breeding activity was first detected in early May. Peak abundance of Culex spp. population in many catch basins was observed in June 2012 and August 2013 when average daily temperatures were increasing and rainfall had declined. Dry periods between rainfalls varied during 2 years of the study period and were noted on June 2012 as well as on July and August 2013. Organically enriched catch basins with significant higher concentrations of Na and NO were found to be more productive breeding habitats. Differences in the Culex immature stage density based on the variables of habitat type, temperature, and precipitation support the need for ongoing surveillance in communities to guide public health officials in planning for and prioritizing mosquito control efforts. Land-use change associated with human development can alter aquatic habitat and imperil aquatic species. Fish are challenged when urban streams are altered, for example for stormwater conveyance, but little is known about how such activities influence the space use of individual fish. Electronic tagging and experimental displacement of fish can be used to explore site fidelity and homing behaviour of fish and can therefore be useful for testing hypotheses about space use and habitat selection. In this study, we used experimental displacement to determine how longnose dace (LND, Rhinichthys cataractae) utilize reaches within a watershed that have varying degrees of degradation. LND were tagged using passive integrated transponders (PIT tags), transported upstream, and released either into the natural stream reach, impaired stormwater drain reach, or at their confluence. Fixed PIT antennas were used to monitor movement of the PIT-tagged fish among the three reaches for a period of 3 weeks. LND exhibited dramatic and rapid selection against the stormwater drain. No LND moved into the drain and 97% of fish transported to the drain left within 24 h. LND were actively avoiding the stormwater drain, emphasizing the need for enhancement work to improve the biological connectivity of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

River sediments may contain a huge variety of environmental contaminants and play a key role in the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. Contaminants adsorbed to sediments and suspended solids may contribute directly or after remobilization to an adverse ecological and chemical status of surface water. In this subproject of the joint research project DanTox, acetonic Soxhlet extracts from three German river sediments from the River Rhine (Altrip and Ehrenbreitstein with moderate contamination) and River Elbe (Veringkanal Hamburg heavily contaminated) were prepared and redissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). These extracts were analyzed with a standard bioassay battery with organisms from different trophic levels (bacteria, algae, Daphnia, fish) as well as in the Ames test and the umuC test for bacterial mutagenicity and genotoxicity according to the respective OECD and ISO guidelines. In total, 0.01 % (standard) up to 0.25 % (only fish embryo test) of the DMSO sediment extract was dosed to the test systems resulting in maximum sediment equivalent concentrations (SEQ) of 2 up to 50 g l. The sediment of Veringkanal near Hamburg harbor was significantly more toxic in most tests compared to the sediment extracts from Altrip and Ehrenbreitstein from the River Rhine. The most toxic effect found for Veringkanal was in the algae test with an EC (72 h) of 0.00226 g l SEQ. Ehrenbreitstein and Altrip samples were about factor 1,000 less toxic. In the Daphnia, Lemna, and acute fish toxicity tests, no toxicity at all was found at 2 g l SEQ. corresponding to 0.01 % DMSO. Only when increasing the DMSO concentration the fish embryo test showed a 22-fold higher toxicity for Veringkanal than for Ehrenbreitstein and Altrip samples, while the toxicity difference was less evident for the Daphnia test due to the overlaying solvent toxicity above 0.05 % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The higher toxicities observed with the Veringkanal sample are supported by the PAH and PCB concentrations analyzed in the sediments. The sediment extracts of Altrip and Veringkanal were mutagenic in the Ames tester strain TA98 with metabolic activation (S9-mix). The findings allow a better ecotoxicological characterization of the sediments extensively analyzed in all subprojects of the DanTox project (e.g., Garcia-Kaeufer et al. In the absence of agreed limit values for sediment extracts in standard tests, further data with unpolluted reference sediments are required for a quantitative risk assessment of the investigated polluted sediments. Being able to identify the environmental crimes and the guilty parties is central to police investigations, and new technologies enable the authorities to do this faster and more accurately than ever before. In recent years, our research team has introduced the use of a range of aerial platforms and an innovative application of thermography to detect several illegal activities; for example, illegal sanitary sewer and storm-drain connections, illicit wastewater discharges, and other 'anomalies' on surface waters can be easily identified using their thermal infrared signatures. It can also be used to detect illegal solid/liquid waste dumps or illicit air discharges. This paper introduces first results of a Thermal Pattern and Thermal Tracking approach that can be used to identify different phenomena and several pollutants. The aims of this paper were to introduce a fingerprint paradigm for environmental police investigations, defining several specific signatures (patterns) that permit the identification of an illicit/anomalous activity, and establish a procedure to use this information to find the correlation (tracking) between the crime and the culprit or the source and the target. The article presents research on urban biogeochemistry, with a focus on the issue of eutrophication of urban surface waters due to excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in water quality management. Topics include the influences of stormflow and baseflow pathways on nitrogen and phosphorus export from an urban watershed, the flow of water moving through storm drains in non-stormy conditions, and proposals for the prevention of the contamination of shallow groundwater.

An optimization procedure has been developed for branching storm and sanitary sewer systems with a pre-determined layout for determining the minimum total cost. The model was developed within Microsoft Excel using simulated annealing as the optimization procedure. The total cost of the storm sewer system that was obtained with this optimal design procedure was compared to the total cost of the system as obtained from the conventional straight slope design procedure. Applying the simulated annealing optimizer to the design of the branching storm sewer network resulted in a cost savings of over $77,100 or about 7 % (a reduction from $1,117,700 to $1,040,600). These significant savings were realized by simply going an extra step and implementing an optimization technique during the design phase. Use of Excel should enhance the availability and the usage of such an optimization model for the design of storm and sanitary sewer systems by consulting engineers and various agencies. Support vector machine (SVM) classification models were constructed using a radial basis functions (RBF). These models were used for classification according to dissolved oxygen, permanganate index, ammoniac nitrogen, total nitrogen, or total phosphorus. Cross-validation and grid-search were applied to find satisfactory parameters for RBF for the improved models. Then the improved models were used to assess water quality utilizing a real-world data set (surface water quality monitoring data). The data set was comprised of more than 2,000 water samples representing 172 different sites monitored for one hydrological year. The results showed that the method presented in this paper had excellent performance, and the SVM classification models performed relatively better than the Linear Discriminant Analysis and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis models for classification. Stereoisomeric compositions can provide insights into sources, fate, and ecological risks of contaminants in the environment. In this study, stereoisomeric profiles of ibuprofen and iopromide were investigated in wastewater and receiving surface water of the Pearl River Delta, south China. The enantiomeric fraction (EF) of ibuprofen was 0.108-0.188 and 0.480, whereas the isomer ratio (IR) of iopromide was 1.426-1.673 and 1.737-1.898 in the influent and final effluent, respectively, suggesting stereoselective degradation occurred for both pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment. Ibuprofen showed enantioselective degradation in the anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic conditions, whereas iopromide displayed isomer-selective degradation only under the aerobic condition. In the river waters, the EF of ibuprofen was 0.130-0.327 and the IR of iopromide was 1.500-2.531. The results suggested that pharmaceuticals in the mainstream Pearl River were mainly from discharge of treated wastewater, whereas in the tributary rivers and urban canals, direct discharge of untreated wastewater represented a significant contribution. The behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soils under varying environmental conditions represents a poorly studied aspect of the problem of organic matter loss from soils. The equilibrium and sustainable development of ecosystems in the northern latitudes are largely determined by the balance between the formation of DOM, its accumulation in the lower soil horizons, and its input with runoff into surface waters. The residence time, retention strength in the soil, and thermodynamic and biochemical stabilities depend on the localization of DOM in the pore space and its chemical structure. Amphiphilic properties represent a valuable diagnostic parameter, which can be used to predict the behavior of DOM in the soil. Acidic components of hydrophobic and hydrophilic nature constitute the major portion of DOM in forest soils of the temperate zone. The hydrophilic fraction includes short-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids, hydrocarbons, and amino acids and is poorly sorbed by the solid phase. However, the existence of this fraction in soil solution is also limited both in space (in the finest pores) and time because of higher accessibility to microbial degradation. The hydrophilic fraction composes the major portion of labile DOM in soils. The hydrophobic fraction consists of soluble degradation products of lignin; it is enriched in structural ortho-hydroxybenzene fragments, which ensure its selective sorption and strong retention in soils. Sorption is favored by low pH values (3.5-5), the high ionic strength of solution, the heavy texture and fine porous structure of soil, the high contents of oxalate- and dithionite-soluble iron (and aluminum) compounds, and hydrological conditions characterized by slow water movement. The adsorbed DOM is chemically and biochemically recalcitrant and significantly contributes to the humus reserves in the low mineral horizons of soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Techniques to predict temporal variations in concentrations and loads of suspended solids from highway runoff are required to estimate impacts on receiving water ecology and to inform the design of interception/treatment devices. A recent UK study included the collection of rainfall, highway runoff rates and sediment load and quality data from six different sites where motorway runoff drained directly into a receiving watercourse. This data set is used to critically evaluate a previously-published model (Kim et al. 2005) aimed at predicting temporal variations in runoff quality. The comparisons, based on discrete samples collected during 21 storm events, suggest that a simplification of the model, requiring just two parameters, provides a robust estimate of temporal variations in total suspended solids (TSS). Generic parameter values are provided, and the model's application is illustrated. The model captures first flush effects well, but the identified generic parameters fail to fullypredict the variation in absolute TSS values that are observed in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
