A growing group of institutional investors use divestment strategically to deter misconducts that are harmful for the climate and society. Based on Kantian ethics, we propose that divestment represents investors' universal and absolute moral commitment to socially responsible investing (SRI). Following categorical and hypothetical imperatives and reciprocity as a norm, we hypothesize how institutional investors' commit to SRI through a divestment strategy against ethically reprehensible behaviour of banks, especially when these investors represent banks themselves. Using a hand-collected database of the revelation dates of enforcement actions on banks, we find evidence that banks are less likely to divest equity holding on banks with misconduct (fined banks) than their non-bank institutional investors peers. Banks that commit to invest responsibly by signing for the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) are not significantly more likely to divest on fined banks stocks than non-signatory banks. Moreover, divestment of fined banks whose own legitimacy to operate is in question is not significantly different from non-fined banks divestment. We find that European banks are more inclined to sell their holdings permanently on fined banks than their United States peers. Therefore, bank's moral commitment to SRI via divestments is influenced more by cultural and reciprocity norms than their moral commitment to participate in the PRI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Maintaining a consistent sleep and wake time is often reported as a key component of circadian rhythmicity and quality sleep. However, the impact of sleep onset and offset time variability on overall sleep outcomes are underreported in elite athlete populations. This study investigated the relationship between sleep onset and offset time variability using the sleep regularity index (SRI) and measures of sleep and well-being in professional rugby union athletes. Twenty-three professional male rugby union athletes (mean ± SD, age: 23 ± 3 y) underwent sleep monitoring via wrist actigraphy for three weeks during a pre-season phase of training and completed a daily wellness questionnaire. Median SRI was calculated and used to stratify the trainees into two quantile groups: >76.4 SRI (Regular, n = 11) and < 76.4 SRI (Irregular, n = 12). Results: The regular sleep group showed significantly longer total sleep duration (p = 0.02, d = 0.97) compared to the irregular group (7:42 ± 0:29 vs. 7:18 ± 0:20 h: min per night, respectively). Furthermore, while not statistically significant, the regular sleep group showed greater sleep efficiency and less wake episodes compared to irregular sleepers, as demonstrated by moderate effect sizes (d = 0.71 and 0.69, respectively). Conclusions: The results from this study indicate that minimizing variability in sleep onset and offset time is beneficial for increasing sleep duration and may improve sleep efficiency during pre-season training in elite male rugby union athletes. This study provides evidence for the importance of including sleep-wake routines as a key component of sleep education interventions. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly vascularized tumor, one of the most common and lethal cancer-related tumor deaths worldwide, with cell proliferation playing a key role. In this study our western blot results and data from TAGC demonstrate a strong association between Sorcin (SRI) overexpression and poor outcomes in HCC. Moreover, SRI overexpression was remarkably effective in promoting proliferation in vitro and increasing tumor growth in vivo, which were attenuated by knocking down SRI. Mechanistically, SRI regulated vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and vascular endothelial growth factor B (VEGFB) through PI3K/Akt/FOXO1 signal pathway. Overall, our study indicates that SRI stimulates HCC growth by controlling VEGFA/B, which presents a fresh insight into the pathogenesis of hepatocarcinogenesis and a new therapeutic target for HCC. This study delves into the potential impacts of climate change on meteorological and hydrological droughts in the Western Ghats region of South India, a large and humid tropical region. Utilizing three drought indices—the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and Standardized Runoff Index (SRI), we assessed the historical drought patterns and projected future scenarios under different Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios (4.5 and 8.5). This comprehensive analysis encompassed three future time segments (near: 2021–2040, mid: 2041–2070, far: 2071–2100) and compared results with a base period (1989–2018). The study demonstrated that drought propagation is notably faster (around 3 months) in wet, humid tropical regions, highlighting the urgency of understanding its dynamics. Furthermore, the findings indicate that droughts are expected to increase in count and severity (> 100%) in the Western Ghats in future, accompanied by an accelerated propagation rate (around 2 months), with recovery rates for hydrological droughts being notably swift in this region. The study emphasizes the significant influence of regional conditions on drought propagation, leading to variations in its characteristics. Additionally, it underscores the potential of Pearson correlation analysis in providing approximate results for estimating drought propagation periods in the wet, humid tropical regions. Drought characteristics and propagation of droughts have been extensively studied for future climate scenarios, but studies on drought hazard mapping in response to climate change are very limited. This study investigated the possibility and severity of drought hazard based on the meteorological and hydrological properties of the drought under changing climate change scenarios. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used for future streamflow generation. Sixth International Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phage 6 (CMIP6) ensemble General Circulation Models (GCMs) were used to obtain information regarding the future precipitation and streamflow. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Runoff Index (SRI) were constructed under different Socioeconomic Shared Pathways (SSPs) to analyse the Drought Hazard Index (DHI) over the basin. The key findings of the study are: (i) hydrological and meteorological drought properties are influenced by precipitation as well as minimum and maximum temperatures; (ii) SRI showed moderate severity and remained nearly constant in all scenarios, while SPI showed a decrease in severity over the watershed; (iii) the drought severity showed regressive declining conditions and a marked decrease under different climate scenarios especially under SSP585 scenario; and (iv) the drought hazard will be lower for future scenarios compared to reference period. This research had been conducted in Sampean Baru Watershed, Bondowoso-Situbondo Regency, Indonesia. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) categorizes this watershed as an area that has a very high level of drought. This condition is likely to get worse and will have a broad impact on people's lives if global warming continues for the next few years, therefore, future drought assessment is needed to assist in decision making. This study aims to assess future drought using General Circulation Model data. The GCM data contains future climate change scenarios called the Representatives Concentration Pathway (RCP) as results of the Fifth Assessment Report-Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR5) report. GCM data containing coarse-resolution climate parameters are processed using downscaling techniques, so predictive rainfall data with the fine resolution, and local scale are obtained. The rainfall data is used in Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) modelling to simulate discharge at Sampean Baru watershed. Furthermore, the Standardized Runoff Index (SRI) method with simulated discharge used as input data to assess the drought severity. The results showed that the drought severity using SRI gives high accuracy and can be used for predictions of drought in the future. The drought prediction results showed that increased greenhouse gas concentrations while earth's temperature on RCP scenarios have an influence the intensity of drought events and drought-affected areas. Irrigated paddy rice needs new strategies and tools to improve water use efficiency and productivity by applying just enough to sustain production with huge savings on irrigation water. In this regard, an experiment was conducted in Tainan, Xuejia district where lowland paddy rice was grown under the SRI using two different irrigation methods (rill irrigation and sprinkler hose). This was conducted over a period of two years (2019 and 2020) to obtain an optimized irrigation method with high water-saving benefits and increased yields. In the first-year, rill irrigation was used with varying rill depths of 10, 20 and 25 cm (as T10, T20 and T25 treatments) under SRI, and the depth of 10 cm was found to be the most optimum, attaining a yield of 1500 kg/ha. T10 had also the highest water productivity of 0.7 kg/m3. In the second year, a sprinkler hose was used for irrigation with varying irrigation volumes of 0.3, 0.2, 0.1 m3 (as T3, T2 and T1 treatments) and the traditional SRI method as the control. All plots were irrigated at a moisture stress of 25 kPa. The 0.3 m3 treatment was effective in producing the highest yield of 950 kg/ha with a water productivity of 0.21 kg/m3. The results showed that the yield and the water productivity were 63% and 30% higher under rill irrigation, respectively, favouring the adoption of rill irrigation. Generally, lowland paddy rice performed better in the dry season for both methods applied due to high prevalence of diseases in the wet season. In conclusion, any modifications of water applied to paddy should be made during the crucial stages of grain filling to improve the fertility rate otherwise optimum yields will not be realised. Investors with a pro-social or sustainability agenda increasingly attempt to influence firm managers to adopt socially responsible behavior, either through positive/reward tactics or negative/punishment tactics. This paper considers how investors can use each approach to differentially influence managers to make more CSR investments. The paper uses game theory with an all-pay contest structure to model how a large institutional investor could reward firms for CSR activities by creating a socially responsible investment fund (reward contest) or punish firms via shareholder activism (punishment contest). We identify conditions under which the punishment contest induces a higher level of CSR activity among firms compared to the reward contest. Managers bearing substantial private costs stemming from the activism is one such condition. Spillover effects are seen as the other managers in the economy engage in CSR to avoid being punished by the investor's activism. This level of engagement is not the case when rewards are used—only those managers with an expectation of being rewarded increase their CSR activity in that scenario. This suggests, for example, that incorporating thresholds or tiers (e.g. gold, silver, and bronze-level winners) can increase the effectiveness of reward contests. This study empirically analyses the exclusion of companies from investors’ investment universe due to a company’s business model (sector-based exclusion) or due to a company’s violations of international norms (norm-based exclusion). We conduct a time-series analysis of the performance implications of the exclusion decisions of two leading Nordic investors, Norway’s Government Pension Fund-Global (GPFG) and Sweden’s AP-funds. We find that their portfolios of excluded companies do not generate an abnormal return relative to the funds’ benchmark index. While the exclusion portfolios show higher risk than the respective benchmark, this difference is only statistically significant for the case of GPFG. These findings suggest that the exclusion of the companies generally does not harm funds’ performance. We interpret these findings as indicative that with exclusionary screening, as practiced by the sample funds, asset owners can meet the ethical objectives of their beneficiaries without compromising financial returns. We conducted interview survey with rainfed rice farmers at a commune in southern Cambodia to identify the determinants of their adoption or rejection of the system of rice intensification (SRI) for the wet season of 2014. SRI was first introduced to the commune in 2003 and spread among the farmers, but the number of farmers discontinuing the practice has increased since 2011. We classified the farmers into four categories: those who practice SRI in all their fields (OA), farmers who practice SRI in some of their fields (PA), farmers who had practiced SRI but discontinued it (DA), and farmers who have never practiced SRI (CR). Farmers in different categories of SRI adoption differed in their access to water sources. The majority of OA and PA farmers had supplementary water sources, which was, however, available to less than 50% of DA farmers and only 15% of CR farmers. Both PA and DA farmers mentioned water shortage as the reason for not practicing SRI in some (PA) or any (DA) of their fields, but they differed in the number of rice fields. All the PA farmers had more than one field, whereas a majority of DA farmers had only one field. Labor shortage and difficulty of planting in a regular grid pattern were also mentioned as the reason for not practicing SRI by the farmers, particularly by DA farmers. We add to the investments literature by employing new techniques to estimate asset performance. We estimate a data envelopment analysis based efficiency score that allows for direct comparison between ex-post efficiency rankings and test the ex-ante relevance of such scores by including them into asset pricing models. We find that knowing the fund efficiency score can help explain time-series returns. When efficiency is included in an asset pricing model, the absolute value of the average mispricing error is decreased, which we take as evidence of the explanatory power of efficiency scores. But more importantly, we show that efficacy scores can be used as next period predictors of stock returns. In addition, we further use the efficiency scores to differentiate between the performance of constrained and unconstrained investment assets, as in the case of socially responsible investments. The consumption of energy inputs in agricultural production has been increasing rapidly during the past decades. However, given the limitations and costs of non-renewable energy, increasing production while using the least energy possible has become a major concern of most nations. Prompted by this concern, we conducted a face-to-face survey of 90 farming households in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam, to find out how energy is being used in agriculture and, specifically, in their rice production. Through analysis of energy input-output balances, combined with economic efficiency analysis, a comparison was made of conventional and SRI methods of rice production. The study found that applying the SRI method can save around 23% of energy inputs, while increasing energy outputs by 11%. Economic benefits per hectare also rise by more than 8 million dong (USD 364) compared to those under the conventional cultivation system. The study also showed conflicts between the energy and economic balances for manual compared with machine ploughing operations. This study contributes to providing an overview of energy consumption in rice cultivation at the household level. Its findings can help stakeholders to assess current policies and make better decisions on the uses of energy in agricultural production. In addition, the comprehensive approach taken here to analysing energy use and efficiency could expand the analysis and comparison of energy uses at sectoral or activity level-still a new field in Vietnam and many other countries. This study established a hydrological drought forecasting system based on the Bayesian method and evaluated its utilization for South Korea. The regression result between Historical Runoff (HR) and Ensemble Streamflow Prediction Runoff (ESP_R) was used as prior information in the Bayesian method. Additionally Global seasonal forecast System 5 Runoff (GS5_R) produced using a dynamic prediction method was used in a likelihood function. Bayesian Runoff (BAY_R), as posterior information, was generated and compared with the ESP_R and GS5_R results for predictive ability evaluation. The Standardized Runoff Index (SRI) was selected for the drought prediction, and the BAY_SRI, GS5_SRI and ESP_SRI were computed using BAY_R, GS5_R and ESP_R, respectively. The Correlation Coefficient (CC), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) score of BAY_SRI were the highest, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of BAY_SRI was the lowest among the methods. The Bayesian method improved the behavioral and quantitative error of drought prediction and the predictive ability of the occurrence of drought. In particular, the simulation accuracy was significantly improved during the flood season. Additionally, BAY_SRI represented past drought scenarios better than did the other two methods. Overall, we found that the Bayesian method could be applied for hydrological drought predictions for based on 1- and 2-month lead times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the determinants of the optimal percentage that private investors seek to invest in a socially responsible (SR) way when forming their portfolio. By conducting a global online survey in English, German and French, we find indications that it is sufficient for the majority of investors to have a certain amount of their budget invested sustainably. Accordingly, the optimal proportion tends to be lower the higher the available investment volume is. In addition, the non-financial utility derived from SR investments appears to be independent of the form of financing the investor provides. In this paper, we present the results of an online questionnaire among private German mutual fund investors. In an exploratory nature, we empirically analyze the differences between three groups: sustainable investors, conventional investors that are either generally interested or those that are not interested at all to invest in socially responsible (SR) funds. We provide evidence on motives and attitudes of these three investor groups, showing that SR fund investors are quite similar to those interested in investing sustainably and very different from those who only consider investing conventionally. All three groups agree that sustainable actions of a company affect its stock price positively. Yet, they all believe that SR funds perform worse than conventional funds. Nevertheless, some still invest in SR funds. Consequently, different motives and attitudes are the determining factors when it comes to making an investment decision. This study investigates the financial effects of additions to and deletions from the most well-known social stock index: the MSCI KLD 400. Our study makes use of the unique setting that index reconstitution provides and allows us to bypass possible issues of endogeneity that commonly plague empirical studies of the link between corporate social and financial performance. By examining not only short-term returns but also trading activity, earnings per share, and long-term performance of stocks that are involved in these events, we bring forward evidence of a 'social index effect' where unethical transgressions are penalized more heavily than responsibility is rewarded. We find that the addition of a stock to the index does not lead to material changes in its market price, whereas deletions are accompanied by negative cumulative abnormal returns. Trading volumes for deleted stocks are significantly increased on the event date, while the operational performances of the respective firms deteriorate after their deletion from the social index. Recently, there has been much talk of impact investing. Around the world, specialized intermediaries have appeared, mainstream financial players and governments have become involved, renowned universities have included impact investing courses in their curriculum, and a myriad of practitioner contributions have been published. Despite all this activity, conceptual clarity remains an issue: The absence of a uniform definition, the interchangeable use of alternative terms and unclear boundaries to related concepts such as socially responsible investment are being criticized. This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of impact investing, which could help foster this specific investment style and guide further academic research. To do so, it investigates a large number of academic and practitioner works, highlighting areas of similarity and inconsistency on three levels: definitional, terminological, and strategic. Our research shows that, on a general level, heterogeneity-especially definitional and strategic-is less pronounced than expected. Yet, our research also reveals critical issues that need to be clarified to advance the field and increase its credibility. First and foremost, this includes the characteristics required of impact investees, notably whether they need to be (social sector) organizations that prioritize their non-financial mission over the business side. This paper provides an overview of the status quo in socially responsible investing (SRI) literature. We outline motives, history, and current best practice of SRI. We also provide a thorough analysis of a wide set of studies that cover two key topics in this field: the first research objective is to determine the relative performance of SRI vehicles in comparison to their conventional benchmarks. Our meta-analysis shows that most research studies find that socially responsible (SR) investments perform equal to conventional investments, but these findings are challenged by contradictory results from other studies. The second objective is to analyze SR behavior's effects on a company's financial results. We cover the period between 1986 and 2012. This paper provides future researchers with a well-documented and structured overview of the existing literature on SRI, thereby identifying gaps that might be closed by future research. This study focuses on the Hydro-Meteorological Drought assessments by Ensemble Climate Projections from a regional climate model (Weather Research and Forecasting, WRF) that downscaled 3 Global Climate Models under a baseline period (1961-1990) and under a future scenario A2 for 2071-2100. The Meteorological Drought is assessed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) while the Hydrological Drought is analyzed by using both the semi-distributed hydrology model SWAT and Standardized Runoff Index (SRI). The catchment under study is a small river basin lying on the Central Highland area of Vietnam. This area is the source for perennial plantation which produces most of the coffee for Vietnam making it the world's second most exporter of coffee next to Brazil. Additionally, this region is also one of the important sources for hydropower of Vietnam and one of the main tributaries for the Mekong river at the downstream. This region has been known prone to drought, especially during dry seasons of March and April. Accurately measuring lupus disease activity has been a demanding and still unresolved task, considering the complex multisystem nature of the disease and its variability over time and between patients. Various available tools for measurement of lupus disease activity may detect clinical improvement and/or deterioration and can be global or organ-focused. Several measures have demonstrated validity, reliability, and sensitivity to change in observational studies, and some were found useful in randomized controlled trials. Evaluation of their content and metric properties and critical review of their strengths and weaknesses facilitates selection of the appropriate tool according to the outcome of interest, and forms the basis for their optimization. In this review, we highlight recent progress in lupus disease activity measures and point to future directions in this field, with a focus on novel composite measurements derived by combining outcome measures in ways that might compensate for their individual deficiencies. In this paper we argue that over the last 40 years the context of agronomic research in the developing world has changed significantly. Three main changes are identified: the neoliberal turn in economic and social policy and the rise to prominence of the participation and environmental agendas. These changes have opened up new spaces for contestation around the goals, priorities, methods, results and recommendations of agronomic research. We suggest that this dynamic of contestation is having important effects on how agronomic research is planned, managed, implemented, evaluated and used, and is therefore worthy of detailed study. This is particularly so at a time when food security, rising food prices and the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture are in the policy spotlight. This article advances the idea that shareholders who seek to influence corporate behaviour can be understood analytically as norm entrepreneurs. These are actors who seek to persuade others to adopt a new standard of appropriateness. The article thus goes beyond studies which focus on the influence of shareholder activism on single instances of corporate conduct, as it recognises shareholders’ potential as change agents for more widely shared norms about corporate responsibilities. The article includes the empirical example of US internet technology companies who, in their Chinese operations, face conflicts of norm systems in regard to freedom of expression on the internet. Shareholders have been active in seeking to persuade these companies to adopt a norm of adhering to global standards for human rights over restrictions implied by authoritarian regimes to which they deliver services. In the last two decades, there has been a pronounced growth of CSR rating agencies that assess corporations based on their social and environmental performance. This article investigates the impact of CSR ratings on the behavior of individual corporations. To what extent do corporations adjust their behavior based on how they rank? Our primary finding is that being dropped from a CSR ranking appears to do little to encourage firms to acknowledge and address problems related to their social and environmental performance. Specific rankings appear not to have a widespread effect of influencing firms to acknowledge negative CSR events and publicly present plans and actions to address them. Whether firms are well or poorly ranked, they appear to focus on and publicly discuss their “positive” CSR activities. Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) has grown considerably over the past three decades. One form of SRI, engagement-SRI, is today by far the most practiced form of SRI (in assets managed) and has the potential to mainstream SRI even further. However, lack of formalized engagement procedures and evaluation tools leave the engagement practice too opaque for such a mainstreaming. This article can be considered as a first step in the development of a standard for the engagement practice. By developing an engagement heuristic, this article offers a more transparent engagement dialog. Drawing on Stevenson’s and Austin’s speech-act theories, this article develops a classification of management’s responses to the signaling of allegations and controversies on two dimensions: a factual dimension concerning (dis)agreements on factual claims and an attitudinal dimension concerning (dis)agreements on responsibilities, values, and norms. On the basis of the distinctions this article develops, the authors provide for a synoptic table and offer a next-step heuristic for the engagement process that started with signaling a concern to management. The article uses an engagement logic that, while keeping the exit option for the investor open, allows management to address signaled concerns without having to let down or to opt out at the first setback in the dialog process between investor and investee corporation. Most studies into the performance of socially responsible investment vehicles have focused on the performance of sustainable or socially responsible mutual funds. This research has been complemented recently by a number of studies that have examined the performance of sustainable investment indices. In both cases, the majority of studies have concluded that the returns of socially responsible investment vehicles have either underperformed, or failed to outperform, comparable market indices. Although the impact of sustainable indices to date has been limited, the recent launch of sustainable indices by Dow Jones and FTSE suggests that more attention is being paid to the subject by financial markets, investors, and companies. This development raises a number of important issues which are reviewed in this article: (a) the performance of indices compared with their benchmark indices; (b) the methodologies employed in compiling the indices; and (c) the impact of the indices on companies and the investment community. This paper investigates the state of the art with respect to sustainability reporting, its linkages with the corporations, internal measurement and monitoring systems and their combined impact on the quality of contemporary sustainability benchmarks, developed by SRI analysts and so-called rating and screening agencies. This research originated from the EU-funded research initiative to create a new generation management framework for corporate sustainability and responsibility (CS-R). The aim of it is to develop a coherent set of assessment -, measurement - and monitoring tools. The sustainability benchmark tool should align the interests of corporations implementing CS-R and various organizations supporting SRI, such as fund managers, analysts and screening agencies. This paper show the essential features of an actual sustainability benchmark which is currently under construction.
