This study endeavors to formulate a sustainable development-oriented model for home-based businesses catering to rural women in Guilan province. Employing a qualitative-quantitative research approach, the study is practical in its objectives and relies on survey methods for data collection. The research population encompasses two main groups: the first group involves academic professionals, scholars, and managers or experts from provincial organizations dedicated to employment and women's issues, while the second group comprises 274 purposefully sampled individuals, including owners, managers, and women affiliated with micro-credit funds in Guilan province, selected through the snowball technique. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data, and the Smart-PLS software package utilized the partial least squares (PLS) technique for advanced multivariate analysis in structural equation modeling. Evaluation of the home-based business development model for rural women, based on the coefficients of the direct path, reveals that educational (β = 0.112), social (β = 0.232), economic (β = 0.274), and policymaking (β = 0.381) variables significantly influence the sustainable development of home-based businesses (P < 0.05). Notably, the policymaking variable exerts the most substantial impact. Furthermore, the model designed for sustainable development can account for 71 percent of the variance in the dependent variable. It is recommended that the government should allocate financial resources specifically for rural women house-based businesses and policies should prioritize and actively support home-based businesses, recognizing their significant impact on rural women's economic development. Land is a valuable resource, with economic, political, and cultural significance for the rural poor. Land rights are fundamental to eradicate poverty. Strengthening women's land rights is increasingly on national and international agendas. The previous studies fail to investigate the status of rural women in realizing their tenure security rights in the frame work of the revised proclamation no. 133/2006. This study analyzed the current status of rural women in realizing land tenure rights in the South Wollo Zone, Ethiopia. Data were collected from 198 sample households and 83 key informants selected following a multistage sampling technique. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results of the study reveal that 39% of rural women in the study area practiced the experience of transferring land tenure rights according to proclamation no. 133/2006. The study shows that 37.66% of respondents undertook different land right transfers in written form according to proclamation no. 133/2006 article 17(5–6) at land administration offices. Understanding the rights and obligations of transferring tenure rights is an important aspect of reducing land disputes among landholders. In the presence of land disputes, rural women use both formal and informal dispute resolution mechanisms. Therefore, the study concludes that large numbers of rural women realized their landholding and using rights. To better improve the tenure security of rural women, further awareness creation activities and counseling of women are imperative by the local government and other non-governmental organizations working of tenure security, sustainable land management, and women's land right. Ensuring proper menstrual hygiene management remains a significant challenge for young women in India. The term "exclusive use of hygienic period products during menstruation" refers to relying solely on period products like sanitary pads, tampons, or menstrual cups. Poor menstrual hygiene practices not only increase the risk of reproductive tract infections but also lead to various negative health outcomes, including discomfort and potential complications. This study explores factors associated with the exclusive use of period products during menstruation aged 15–24, investigates geographic disparities, examines rural–urban gaps, and assesses inequality in India. Utilizing data from the fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), responses from 2,41,180 women aged 15 to 24 were analysed using logistic regression and multivariate decomposition analyses to explore socioeconomic predictors. Moran's I statistics also assessed spatial dependency, while Lorenz curves and Gini coefficients measured inequality. Quintile and LISA maps visualized regional disparities. The study found that 76.15% of women in India reported exclusive use of hygienic period products during menstruation. Rural areas reported a lower percentage of exclusive use of hygienic period products (72.32%) during menstruation compared to urban areas (89.37%). Key factors associated with the exclusive use of hygienic period products among 15–24-year-old women in India include age, education, place of residence, wealth, access to media, and healthcare discussions. Geographically, central districts exhibited the lowest coverage (< 65%), while the Southern region reported the highest (> 85). The GINI coefficient of 0.39 highlighted moderate inequality in distribution. Decomposition analysis revealed that household wealth contributed 49.25% to rural–urban differences, followed by education (13.41%), media access (7.97%), and region (4.97%). This study highlights significant regional disparities and low utilization of hygienic period products among young women in India, particularly in central districts. Policymakers should prioritize interventions targeting these regions, addressing socio-economic disparities. Strategies to promote education, improve media access, and enhance household wealth can facilitate menstrual hygiene adoption. This study examines the relationship between the wealth index (WI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills among women aged 15–49 in Bangladesh. The research aims to establish a cause-and-effect relationship between WI and ICT skills, while also examining how education mediates this relationship. Using the data from the Bangladesh Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) Program 2019, a two-stage stratified clustered sampling method yielded a sample of 64,378 women. The analysis employed inverse probability weighting (IPW) to assess the causal effect of WI on ICT skills while investigating the mediating role of education in this cause-and-effect relationship through causal mediation analysis. The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between higher economic status and increased ICT proficiency among women aged 15–49 in Bangladesh. Mediation analysis reveals education status as a significant mediator, indicating that educational attainment plays a vital role in linking wealth and ICT skills among women. Sensitivity analysis indicates the observed effect estimates are robust to unmeasured confounding. This research underscores the importance of economic empowerment and educational interventions in narrowing the digital divide and fostering ICT skills development among women, particularly in rural and economically disadvantaged communities. This study examines gender inequalities in the degree of engagement in social clubs of older people and how women's participation relates to their empowerment at the country level. Combined individual-level data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and country-level data from the Women's Political Empowerment Index (WPEI) are used in analyzing 41,185 non-working individuals aged 65–84 across 19 countries. Multilevel regression analyses are conducted to address these aims. We detect notable between-country variations in levels of participation. Substantial differences in the WPEI reflect marked contextual cross-country differences in gender equality. In roughly half of the 19 countries, no gender differences in social club participation are detected; however, women are more likely to participate in social clubs in the more gender-egalitarian countries of France, Denmark, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, whereas in three countries – Italy, Czech Republic and Croatia – more men than women participate in social clubs. Sexual health literacy (SHL) is a set of skills related to sexual behaviors that can affect sexual behavior and empower individuals to maintain as well as improve their sexual health. This study aimed to investigate the rural women's sexual health literacy and its related factors in Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 married women of reproductive ages referring to health center in Benaroyeh region along with six sub-villages in the South of Fars, Iran. Using convenience sampling method, we collected data via demographic-reproductive characteristics questionnaire and sexual health literacy for adult's questionnaire. We analyzed data using SPSS-16. Approximately 33.5% of the women obtained their sexual information online. The mean total SHL score was 75.64 ± 12.81. The SHL level was considered desirable in 82.5% of the participants. Among the four domains of SHL, the scores of most subjects on access skills and analysis-evaluation skills were unfavorable, 24.5% and 35.5%, respectively. The results show that the SHL level was correlated with education (P = 0.021) and inversely related to the gravidity (P = 0.04). There was also a statistically significant relationship between SHL level and women's career (P = 0.026), spouse's career (P = 0.01), and parity (P = 0.05). Most rural women had desirable levels of SHL. Given the lower levels of SHL in access and analysis-evaluation skills, and given the prevalence of Internet use, the provision of high quality and accessible online sexual health content within social and cultural norms is recommended. The study examined the impact of social, demographic, and economic factors on the economic empowerment of rural women in agricultural activities in Ethiopia's Dire Dawa region, using a mixed-methods research approach. The research team collected data from a sample of 419 women engaged in agricultural activities and used the proportional odds model and the partial proportional odds model to identify the factors associated with economic empowerment. The study found that age, property ownership, and education and training had a negative effect, while social networks and media had a positive effect on economic empowerment. The results also showed that women aged 40 and above had a lower likelihood of being economically empowered and lack of property ownership and limited contact with extension agents hurt economic empowerment. The study recommended improving women's access to credit, land ownership, and training opportunities to promote gender equity and women's economic empowerment in the agricultural sector in Ethiopia. This study contributes to the literature by using a mixed-methods approach that integrated qualitative data with quantitative data, which has not been used before in Ethiopia. The findings provide important implications for policymakers and development practitioners in promoting gender equity and women's economic empowerment in the agricultural sector. The study highlights the need to address the challenges that women face in achieving economic empowerment, including limited access to credit, training, and land ownership. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is crucial to the livelihoods of close to 20 million people in over 80 countries, including 4-5 million women, mainly in rural areas with limited alternative economic prospects, particularly in developing countries. ASGM is largely informal, which can add to the challenge of addressing negative social and environmental effects including impacts on biodiversity. However, with proper guidance, ASGM can operate in a responsible manner, using cleaner production methods that minimize impacts on human health and the environment. This study presents and analyzes the interactions between ASGM and biodiversity based on new findings from 27 ASGM National Action Plans (NAPs) developed within the framework of Article 7 and Annex C of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, as well as a global literature review of more than 100 publications. In terms of key findings according to the literature reviewed, alongside other human occupation such as agriculture and industrial activities, ASGM also has an impact on the environment and biodiversity. The interrelationship between ASGM and biodiversity, including protected areas, is pervasive at every stage of ASGM operations, from extraction to mine closure, and generates significant impacts on the surrounding ecosystems. These impacts include, in descending order of most reported impacts: deforestation, soil degradation, chemical contamination of aquatic and terrestrial systems, and changes to the turbidity of watercourses. Tropical regions and key species such as amphibians and freshwater fish are among the most affected. Singly or combined, these environmental stressors lead to loss or deterioration of habitat and, by extension, indigenous biodiversity and ecosystem services. In addition, legal, institutional, and regulatory frameworks and related measures, inadequate or non-existent in some cases, may not necessarily support sustainable practices, often resulting in exploited sites abandoned without remediation, reclamation, rehabilitation, or restoration measures. To mitigate such impacts a key recommendation arising from the literature review is to strengthen the integration of the interrelationship between ASGM and biodiversity in the implementation of existing relevant national strategies, including those developed under the NAPs. The global literature review also highlights the importance of a multi-stakeholder, systemic approach combining the use of geospatial analysis, scientific and local knowledge, as well as the adaptation of the relevant frameworks, capacity building, and awareness raising. This approach can inform decision making with a view to developing sustainable initiatives that prevent and reduce the impacts of artisanal and small-scale gold mining on ecosystems, and that preserve biodiversity. Cervical cancer (CC) continues to be a significant global health issue, which in part can be attributed to disparities in access to CC screening services. This study aims to conduct a trend of CC in Kazakhstan and to compare attitudes towards the screening program between women living in urban and rural areas. In the first stage, we conducted a trend study of CC indicators in Kazakhstan using official statistics. In the second stage, a cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire to assess adherence to screening. The trend study reveals a decline in cervical cancer mortality rates (from 7.15 to 5.93 per 100,000 female inhabitants) over the period studied, while the incidence remains stable (from 18.51 to 19.38 per 100,000 female inhabitants). Regional variations in Period Prevalence rates were observed. Significant differences were found in screening participation rates between urban n = 41 (74%) and rural n = 23 (38%) women, p < 0.001, as well as awareness of the screening program (urban: n = 15 (27%), rural: n = 35 (58%), p < 0.001). The trend study highlights a decrease in cervical cancer mortality rates over the specified period, accompanied by a consistent incidence rate. Additionally, regional disparities in period prevalence rates of cervical cancer were observed. The primary factor contributing to the low adherence of rural women to screening was found to be a lack of awareness regarding the screening program. Rural landscapes, as products of the interaction between humans and nature, not only reflect the history and culture of rural areas but also symbolize economic and social progress. This study proposes a deep learning-based model for Weibo data analysis aimed at exploring the development direction of rural landscapes from the perspective of the Chinese public. The research reveals that the Chinese public's attention to rural landscapes has significantly increased with the evolution of government governance concepts. Most people express a high level of satisfaction and happiness with the existing rural landscapes, while a minority harbor negative emotions towards unreasonable new rural construction. Through the analysis of public opinion regarding rural landscapes, this study will assist decision-makers in understanding the mechanisms of public discourse on social media. It will also aid relevant scholars and designers in providing targeted solutions, which hold significant importance for policy formulation and the exploration of specific development patterns. The health of women of childbearing age in rural areas is crucial for the development of individuals, families, and society. Research on the identification and influencing factors of health vulnerability in impoverished and disadvantaged groups is important for adjusting and implementing health poverty alleviation policies. However, there is limited research on the health vulnerability of women of childbearing age in rural Western China. Based on panel data from the Rural Residents' Family Health Status Survey in 2019 and 2022, the vulnerability to health poverty of women of childbearing age in rural areas was constructed using the three-stage feasible generalized least squares method. Variables from four dimensions—physical capital, financial capital, social capital, and human capital—were included in the sustainable livelihood analysis framework for analysis. The Tobit model was used to analyze the influencing factors of vulnerability to health poverty among women of childbearing age in rural Western China, and the contribution rates of various factors were studied using the Shapley value decomposition method. In 2019 and 2022, under the poverty line standards of $1.90 and $2.15, respectively, the vulnerability to health poverty among rural women of childbearing age exceeded 20%. Tobit regression analysis revealed that the type of drinking water being well water significantly increased the vulnerability to health poverty of rural women of childbearing age (P < 0.05), whereas the separation of housing and kitchen, registered poor households, household loans, annual per capita household income, expenditures on social interactions, educational level, self-assessed health status, respondent age, and the utilization of hospital services significantly reduced the vulnerability to health poverty of rural women of childbearing age (P < 0.05). Shapley's decomposition shows that annual per capita household income, expenditures on social interactions, respondent age, and household loans are the factors contributing most to the vulnerability to health poverty of rural women of childbearing age, while other variables have a smaller contribution rate. The health poverty situation of women of childbearing age in rural Western China is not optimistic. Preintervention for health poverty should be strengthened among rural women of childbearing age, early warning mechanisms for the risk of falling back into poverty due to illness should be established, the precise identification of highly vulnerable rural women of childbearing age should be improved, and the medical insurance system for rural women of childbearing age should be enhanced to help improve their current health poverty situation. Background: The sustenance of any household is tied to the well-being of the mother's health before, during, and after pregnancy. Maternal health care has continued a downward slope, increasing maternal mortality in rural communities in Nigeria. Presently, few empirical findings connect maternal healthcare facilities' use to mothers' well-being in Nigeria. Using maternal health facilities and the well-being of rural women is crucial in achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, and 3 (No poverty, zero hunger, good health, and well-being). Objective: The objective of the study was to examine the level of maternal healthcare utilization and its effect on mothers' well-being status among mothers in rural Nigeria. Methods: In this study, secondary data extracted from the Nigeria's 2018 National Demographic Health Survey was used. Data was analyzed with Multiple correspondence analysis, Fuzzy set analysis, and Extended ordered logit model. Results: Women in rural Nigeria were moderate users of maternal health care services and had moderate well-being indices (0.54 ± 0.2, 0.424 ± 0.2, respectively). Mothers' moderate well-being status was increased by using maternal health care facilities, having a larger household, and having mothers who worked exclusively in agriculture. Conclusion: We concluded that mothers in rural Nigeria use maternal healthcare facilities moderately, and their well-being level was improved using maternal healthcare facilities. Therefore, Nigeria's Ministry of Health should raise awareness about the vitality of mothers using health care services before, during, and after pregnancy. In order to promote greater female participation in full-scale agricultural production, it is imperative for the Nigerian government to allocate substantial resources in the form of subsidies and incentives. The Nigerian government should source these resources from various channels, including expanded development cooperation. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the emerging dynamics of formal and informal employment in the context of Maharashtra. Using the unit-level records from the recently published Employment and Unemployment Surveys (EUS) of the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) in 2011–12 and various rounds of Periodical Labour Force Surveys (PLFSs), we examine the nature and patterns of formal and informal employment. Also, we investigate the role of personal, household, and labour market characteristics in shaping the dichotomy between formal and informal employment in Maharashtra. The findings of the paper suggest that the wage gap between formal and informal employment is greatly influenced by individual and employment characteristics such as gender, marital status, years of schooling, technical education, vocational training, work experience, and industry of work. In addition, the paper also finds evidence for the marginalisation of women from the labour market, the enormous size of women in unpaid domestic duties, the lack of adequate coverage of formal employment in the rural sector, wage disparity, and the burgeoning size of informal employment. From a policy perspective, the paper suggests fostering inclusive economic growth by facilitating greater participation of women in the labour market and increasing the coverage of formal employment, which is crucial for attaining a decent living standard. The entrepreneurship of women in rural areas can provide economic versatility for families and help protect the social structure. Women have different reasons and motivations for engaging in entrepreneurship activities in different societies. The present research aimed to find the reasons for and obstacles to the creation and development of business and entrepreneurship activities using the interview method. The research population who were interviewed was fourteen exemplary female entrepreneurs in Khorasan Razavi province, Iran, who were introduced to us by the Office of Women's Affairs and the Family of the Khorasan Razavi Governor. The results of the interview were encoded and analyzed with the MaxQda software. The results showed that the most important reasons and motivations of women for entrepreneurship activities included economic, social, humane, personal, cultural, and environmental. Economic reasons were the strongest ones. The most important obstacles for women in creating and expanding entrepreneurial activities included bureaucratic, economic, family-oriented, psychological, infrastructure, policy-making, sociocultural, and technical. The study gives new insight into what obstacles women entrepreneurs are faced to create small rural businesses in rural areas and how they are motivated to develop their businesses. Social status is a key determinant of marital sorting patterns. This paper studies the role of the hukou system — a household registration system in mainland China that categorizes individuals into rural and urban groups — in shaping marital sorting patterns. Specifically, I evaluate a policy that granted men the same rights to transfer their hukou status to children as women. The policy significantly increased hukou intermarriages, particularly between rural women and urban men. By estimating a two-sided directed search and matching model, I find that the policy distorted the marriage market by increasing search frictions to a greater extent for rural men than for urban men. Highly educated rural men would have benefited the most if this policy had not been implemented, indicating that they suffered the most welfare loss, at least in terms of marriage outcomes. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the role of social status in shaping marriage markets and the impact of status-related policy interventions on welfare outcomes. This study investigates the factors affecting women's knowledge about food and nutrition in selected areas of rural Bangladesh. Respondents of the study included women who had participated in the BRAC Health Nutrition and Population Programme in the study region of Bangladesh in 2017. The findings revealed that women had a good level of knowledge about food and nutrition. Family size, annual income, and degree of education have significant effects on rural women's understanding of food and nutrition. We recommend developing an integrated approach by the government, extension department, and NGOs to work in collaboration within the rural contexts so that the country meets the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2: achieving food security and improved nutrition. The present paper aims to unveil the experience of rural women in a disaster cycle. The paper contains the ethnographic accounts of the women affected by cyclone 'Fani', which hit the coasts of Odisha on 3rd May 2019. The study concentrated on the village 'Kaliakera' of Puri, Odisha and spanned three months just after the cyclone. Adopting an exploratory design with an intersectionality approach, the study covered 60 women respondents drawn through stratified sampling from diverse caste groups. With an emic perspective and ethnographic tools, the accounts of these women have been captured. The study concluded that risk perception is low among women, reducing their disaster preparedness ability. Family members' concerns and decisions played a crucial role in the disaster preparedness of women. Low disaster preparedness makes risk management difficult for them during and after a disaster. Livelihood, health and food insecurities were the most common risk encountered by rural women. Past experience with disaster, caste dynamics, and socio-economic conditions affect women's effective handling of the disaster. This paper reports on Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) public participation in Malawi with a focus on the role of women from matrilineal and patrilineal marriage systems. Six rural ESIA projects are explored of which three are in areas of patrilineal and three are in areas of matrilineal systems. Participation space was found to be consistently dominated by men, with no obvious differences between both systems. The key reasons are likely to be lower educational and social status of women in rural areas throughout the country. This is associated with a number of challenges, including chronic poverty and food insecurity. Affirmative action is needed to achieve a better representation of women in ESIA processes. In rural China, the aging population faces unique challenges that affect their life satisfaction. These challenges are compounded by disparities in access to resources compared to urban areas, making it crucial to address these issues to ensure a dignified and fulfilling later life. Understanding and improving life satisfaction for this demographic is essential, not only for the well-being of the elderly but also for the overall social stability and economic sustainability of these communities. Using a rural sample from the Chinese Social Survey (CSS), this study investigates the interplay between social quality factors and life satisfaction among older adults in rural China. It focuses on the roles of socioeconomic security, social cohesion, social inclusion, and social empowerment in shaping the well-being of this demographic. It was found that the four conditional factors of social quality—socioeconomic security, social cohesion, social inclusion, and social empowerment—have different influences on life satisfaction among older adults in rural areas. The statistical model shows that the influence of absolute family income on social and economic security does not have statistical significance. In contrast, housing, pension insurance participation, and public safety perception positively affect life satisfaction among older adults in rural areas. Among the social cohesion factors, higher social morality, legal system evaluation, social identity, grassroots government, and interpersonal trust contribute to the life satisfaction of older adults in rural areas. Regarding social inclusion factors, good social tolerance, social equity, and perception of government public services can significantly improve life satisfaction among older adults in rural areas. For social empowerment factors, social participation helps expand the social support network of older adults in rural areas, enhancing their life satisfaction. Paths to improving the quality of rural society should be explored to improve relative poverty in rural areas. They should continue to be pursued to strengthen the old-age security system for older adults in rural areas. Further, the National Medium- and Long-Term Plan for Actively Responding to Population Aging should be the base for forming an elderly-friendly society. A good atmosphere promotes the participation of people, families, and society; supports social cohesion; enhances inclusion; and promotes social participation, improving life satisfaction. This study investigates the factors that influence the adoption of digital technology in rural areas of India, with a focus on the Digital India Program (DIP). By analyzing the age distribution, education levels, technology adoption rates, and utilization patterns among rural populations, this research provides insights into the effectiveness of the DIP in targeting specific demographics and promoting digital inclusion. Quantitative data were collected from 400 respondents in Kalahandi District in the Odisha state of India. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS. The findings reveal a predominantly young population in rural India, indicating a workforce with significant economic potential and a higher likelihood of embracing digital technologies. Moreover, the study highlights the high levels of education among respondents, indicating a population well-equipped to understand and benefit from digital initiatives. Unexpectedly, the research shows a higher rate of digital technology adoption among female respondents, challenging the perception of gender disparities in technology access. This finding suggests that the DIP has played a vital role in bridging the gender gap and empowering women in rural areas. Additionally, the study uncovers a trend towards mobile-based services over computer-based services, signaling a shift in technology utilization patterns. Breast cancer, a global health concern predominantly affecting women, recorded 2.3 million new cases and 685,000 deaths in 2020. Alarmingly, projections suggest that by 2040, there could be over 3 million new cases and 1 million deaths. To assess breast cancer prevalence in 24 rural villages within a 60 km radius of NIMS Hospital, Tala Mod, Jaipur, Rajasthan, North India 303,121. A study involving 2023 participants conducted initial screenings, and positive cases underwent further tests, including ultrasound, mammography, and biopsy. SPSSv28 analysed collected data. Among 2023 subjects, 3 screened positive for breast lumps. Subsequent clinical examination and biopsy identified 1 normal case and 2 with breast cancer, resulting in a prevalence proportion of 0.0009 or 98 per 100,000. This study helps fill gap in breast cancer prevalence data for rural Rajasthan. The results highlight a concerning prevalence of breast cancer in the rural area near NIMS hospital, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness, early detection, and better healthcare access. Challenges like limited resources, awareness programs, and delayed diagnosis contribute to this high incidence. To address this, comprehensive approach is necessary, including improved screening programs and healthcare facilities in rural areas. In a male-dominated international migration system, women are more likely to head households after the exit of migrants. We decompose the impact of sending an international migrant into an effect attributable to a change in the gender of the household head and other mechanisms. We find that the effect attributable to a shift from a male-to-a female household head due to migration is negative for economic activities and expenditure indicators. The agricultural and rural development policy seeks to facilitate the transition towards environmentally sustainable and climate-neutral agricultural practices, with a focus on human capital, knowledge, and innovation. Gender equality can play a significant role in promoting environmentally sustainable practices in the agricultural sector, particularly through the adoption and implementation of agri-environment-climate schemes (AECS) in the context of farm, agricultural, and rural development. We examine the presence of gender bias in the adoption intensity of AECS by utilising farm-level data from Slovenia. We find that women on Slovenian farms engage in the adoption of AECS and receive subsidies, despite the presence of a gender gap in various agricultural factor endowment variables that typically favour men. The results of this study provide evidence in favour of promoting greater involvement and empowerment of women in the fields of green technology applications and green entrepreneurship, particularly with AECS practices. Access to reliable and affordable energy is crucial for women to carry out household duties efficiently, including cooking and cleaning. However, many women in developing countries still lack access to modern energy sources, which strains their time, health, and overall well-being. This study investigates the relationship between women's economic empowerment and energy choices among rural households in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region of Ethiopia. Utilizing a multi-stage cluster sampling design, 569 households were selected from six randomly chosen woredas (districts). Employing a multinomial model, the research explores factors influencing energy source selection. The findings reveal that a majority of households rely on traditional energy sources, with a positive correlation observed between women's economic empowerment, as measured by the CWEEI, and the adoption of modern energy sources. Additionally, household size and income significantly predict energy source choices. This study underscores the pivotal role of women's economic empowerment in promoting cleaner energy use in rural settings. This study explores determinants of attitudes toward gender inequality among Chinese people using five waves of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) and East Asian Social Survey (EASS, 2016). The study uses five survey questions regarding the relative roles of men and women in the family and workplace to measure gender attitudes. Utilizing the pooled data, the study finds temporal changes of attitude: women are expected to be more responsible for paid jobs than before while their job security is not given enough support; meanwhile, women's share in housework is not anticipated to be reduced. The results suggest that the Chinese attitude toward women's roles is stuck between the modern and old eras. Education is found to be the most crucial determinant of attitude. Education is positively correlated with attitudes supporting women regarding gender inequality. In addition, if the wife has a higher education than the husband, the respondent tends to have an attitude toward gender equality. Furthermore, a large part of the urban-rural difference in attitude can be explained by the urban-rural difference in education. These findings have a straightforward policy implication: to reduce the negative attitude toward gender inequality, education for women and rural regions needs to be promoted. Additionally, by combining the Chinese General Social Survey 2017 and the East Asian Social Survey 2016, this study finds that an individual's patrilineal values conflict with the attitude toward gender equality, suggesting that traditional culture is a potential root of gender inequality. Housing practice in rural areas, particularly in developing countries is vulnerable to natural risks. The provision of risk-resistant rural houses requires individual awareness of risks and related mitigations. However, policymakers and other stakeholders need to intervene to rescue the situation. The September 2016 earthquake that struck the Kagera region measuring 5.9 on the richer scale was large and caused heavy damage to buildings and human lives compared to the previous region's experience. This study explores the influence of users' culture, awareness, and construction techniques on rural affordable and earthquake-resilient homes. The study conducted field surveys in Kagera rural areas that were hit the worst by the disaster. A total of 75 homeowners were purposively sampled from three villages of Ishozi, Bwanjai, and Maruku among villages with many homes severely damaged. Furthermore, it performed structural analysis using SAP 2000 software to analyze earthquake characteristics of existing popular house types. Findings revealed that most homeowners likewise local builders had relatively an understanding below average about issues of safer construction in earthquake-prone areas. Also, building construction practice in the study area is not guided by building regulations leading to compromised earthquake-resilient housing standards revealed by field survey and SAP 2000 structural analysis. The results revealed that 4% of 75 interviewed house owners from the three villages had an understanding above average on earthquake matters in building structural safety and skills as compared to 32% moderate and 64% below average. During the earthquake, the rationalized Banda and modern houses revealed serious structural failures compared to other house types due to low skill capability by the builders. The attention from stakeholders is required to conduct a community sensitization programme for earthquake-resilient housing construction models. Why do individuals create and keep records? Little research has been done into the factors that motivate individuals to make records. This article uses the example of the personal records created by Bangladeshi rural women who participated in a development project to investigate the roles that personal choices and external influences play in the development of recordkeeping practices. By conducting interviews with participants after the end of the project, the author obtained some insights into the factors that encouraged them to create records during the project and the reasons why they continued or stopped doing it after the end of the project and about the role played by external actors, in particular local staff from non-governmental organisations, in influencing their recordkeeping practices. The author shows that the participants started creating and keeping records when they understood the importance that these records could have for them in the future and that the women who persevered with personal recordkeeping practices were those who were more educated and more information literate. On the other hand, the participants who wrote down information because they were encouraged to do so stopped doing it when the regular information flow ended, and they were no longer encouraged to capture information. The author argues that the factors that encourage individuals to create and keep records differ depending on the affordances that the records provide to them. Whereas external actors can play an important role in motivating people to keep records as evidence, for records that are kept for their informational content, personal motivations and recordkeeping literacy skills play a determinant role. We estimate the effects of a rural health clinic expansion for the uninsured, which started in 1980 in Mexico, on the fertility of young women in 1987. Our results show that access to rural clinics decreased women's fertility, particularly for the youngest in our sample. Clinics have positive and significant impacts on contraceptive knowledge and use, supporting the link between the decrease in fertility and the family planning services provided by them. Government and financial institutions are attempting to address the low financial inclusion for developing sustainable microenterprises in rural Benin. Yet, their actions remain to be guided by evidence pertaining to the design of financing schemes intended to boost rural women-owned enterprises. This paper focuses on the relationship between the various financing schemes that exist and the economic performance of women-owned enterprises in rural Benin, using a sample of 3949 small businesses. Results show that social network-based financing improves the business performance of rural women entrepreneurs in small-scale commerce. This is also the case for microenterprises managed by adult women and women with primary-school education. Formal credit-based financing increases the profit margins of mature microenterprises owned by women. This paper also shows that self-financing is more profitable for young rural women entrepreneurs. The results partly inform the need to target women more in financing policies in Benin. Plain English Summary: Microenterprises' financing and performance require more gender considerations in rural Benin. Because of the demand rationing of formal credit, there is a coexistence of other sources of financing in use that induce differential impacts on the performance of women-owned microenterprises. A substitute formal microcredit would enhance the growth of rural women-owned microenterprises operating with social networks-based financing. Individuals living in rural areas have a higher incidence rate of stroke than their urban counterparts in China. However, few studies have investigated the association between blood malondialdehyde (MDA), an end product of lipid oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS), and stroke risk in rural populations. We aimed to investigate whether blood MDA levels contribute to a higher stroke risk in a Chinese elderly population from rural areas. Data from 2011 to 2012 from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), a national cohort of older adults in China, were analyzed. Smooth curve and multivariable correction analyses were used to evaluate the association between blood MDA levels and stroke risk in elderly populations from rural and urban areas, respectively. The median age of all included participants (N = 1598) was 84.04 years. The results of the smooth curve model revealed a gradual upward trend in the association of blood MDA levels with stroke risk in rural participants but not in urban participants. Similarly, the conditional logistic regression analysis suggested a significant association between MDA levels and stroke risk in rural participants but not in urban participants after adjustments for related confounding factors (age, sex, current smoker, current drinker, regular exercise, BMI and cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart disease, atrial fibrillation and diabetes)) were made. The aim of this study is to examine the lasting effects of childhood experiences of being left behind on the cognitive abilities of Chinese adults. To investigate the impact of children being left behind on adult cognitive capacity, we utilized an instrumental variable (IV) approach and the instrumental variable quantile regression (IVQR) method with data from the 2010 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The results reveal that childhood experiences of being left behind, especially by mothers during late childhood, have significant negative effects on cognitive abilities in adulthood. Short-term and long-term left-behind experiences both have detrimental effects on cognitive development. Women, those born in the late 1980s, individuals from middle and low-income households, those living in rural areas, and those with siblings are more vulnerable to these effects.The IVQR analysis demonstrates that the negative effects of childhood experiences of being left behind are more pronounced among those with lower levels of cognitive ability. Furthermore, our findings suggest that educational human capital could serve as a possible channel linking early left-behind experiences to adult cognitive ability. Our research provides a better understanding of how parental migration can impact the cognitive development of children left behind in China and other developing countries in the long term. Dependence on fossil fuel has significantly resulted in global climate change and harms the ecosystem. The process of integration of electricity production with renewable energy sources can significantly improve the economics and energy balance, especially in rural areas. The optimization of decentralized energy generation in India is done by HOMER Pro software. It performs energy balance calculations and determines the least net present cost for each system configuration. In the present study, design of hybrid renewable energy system (HRES), i.e. solar PV, wind and biomass for a rural village in North Sikkim, has been done as a case study. The village is mainly dependent on agriculture and livestock economy. Daily load consumption by 160 houses in village calculated for two distinct seasons was 262.4 kWh with a peak energy demand of 63.45 kW. The optimized simulation results gave the best possible configuration combinations made up of 1.9 kW PV array, 20 kW biogas generator, 63 strings batteries, 1.96 kW inverter and a 2.3 kW rectifier. Results for the combination showed electricity generation was mainly from biogas generator which was cost-effective and sustainable alternative to grid extension. Moreover, the most economical HRES was strongly dependent on the available energy sources at the location. In addition to this, the system has internal rate of return of 7.42% and payback period of 4.53 years. The software helps in determining feasibility of the configuration and estimates the cost of installing and operating the system over the project lifetime. Based on our fieldwork in Yunnan Province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, this paper explores the different ways in which Chinese rural women engage with the rising industry of e-commerce livestreaming related to agricultural products and villages. Our analytical framework is informed by feminist political economy, which pays heed to the gendered social settings, operation of power, and entanglement between women's domesticity and productivity that underpin people's economic activities. We argue that Chinese rural women's simultaneous empowerment and disempowerment by e-commerce livestreaming are characterized by "mobile immobility", a term inspired by Wallis's (2013) research on rural women's technological empowerment by mobile phones a decade ago. On the one hand, this latest form of e-commerce has created an apparently accessible path for rural women, who tend to be geographically immobile, to achieve social mobility by becoming professional webcasters and/or vloggers. On the other hand, this enablement is in fact classed, aged, and preconditioned on in-laws' support and willingness to share these women's domestic duties, which are not guaranteed. The urban-oriented digital economy of e-commerce livestreaming capitalizes on rural young women's femininity, docile bodies and labor as well as the reproductive labor performed by their family members at the microlevel, reinforcing the urban–rural disparity at the macrolevel. The utilization of solid fuels remains a significant contributor to air pollution, with well-documented adverse health consequences. In rural regions, the prevalence of solid fuel use for heating and cooking plays a pivotal role in shaping local air quality. This study focuses on evaluating personal exposure to gaseous pollutants originating from restaurants situated in Karunya Nagar, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. The study design considers establishments that use distinct energy sources, with a particular emphasis on those employing wood and liquefied petroleum gas. We measure the concentration of various pollutants, including particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10), carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, and total volatile organic carbon, utilizing advanced sensor technology. The levels of these pollutants are influenced by various factors, such as ventilation, chimney placement, stove type, fuel selection, time of exposure, frequency of exposure, and toxicity. Notably, our findings reveal that restaurants using wood as a cooking fuel tend to release higher quantities of gaseous pollutants compared to those employing liquefied petroleum gas. In addition to quantitative measurements, we employ comprehensive chemical characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, to delineate the morphology, chemical composition, and other essential properties of the emitted particulate matter. Our study sheds light on the potential health repercussions faced by rural residents who heavily rely on solid domestic fuels. The insights derived from this research not only contribute to the reduction of air pollution exposure but also facilitate the development of exposure assessment models for forthcoming epidemiological investigations. The use of hygienic materials (sanitary napkins, locally prepared napkins, tampons, and menstrual cups) during menstruation among adolescent women in India has improved over the years, yet a significant rural–urban gap in the usage persists at the national level. This study investigates how this rural-urabn gap varies across different states and union territories (UTs) of India and uses Fairlie decomposition to quantify the contribution of various factors to this gap. The study uses data on 114,805 adolescent women (aged 15–19 years) from the fifith round of National Family Health Survey (2019–21). The utilization of hygienic materials during menstruation among adolescent women in rural India stood at 43%, whereas in urban areas, it was 68%, indicating a significant 25 percentage point (pp) difference between the two. The rural–urban gap in the hygienic material use varied significantly across Indian states and UTs. The gap exceeded 20 pp in Madhya Pradesh (36 pp), Odisha (26 pp), Jammu and Kashmir (25 pp), Assam (25 pp), Uttar Pradesh (23 pp), Jharkhand (22 pp), Chhattisgarh (21 pp), and Rajasthan (21 pp). In contrast, the gap in Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana was less than 10 pp. The decomposition analysis of the rural–urban gap (25 pp) revealed that the variables included in the anlaysis explained about 70% of the gap. The difference in the household wealth between rural and urban areas contributed about 69% of the explained gap. Other significant contributors to the explained gap were 'transportation to health facility' (5.6%), 'mass-media exposure' (4.9%), and 'level of education (4.4%). The findings underscore the necessity for state-specific interventions aimed at vulnerable groups, particularly individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, those with lower levels of education, and limited exposure to mass media, in order to reduce the existing rural–urban disparity in hygienic material use among adolescent women. Fars province, as one of the most susceptible ecotourism regions of Iran, has paid attention to the establishment of ecotourism residences with the priority of rural women through ecotourism entrepreneurial training in recent years. In this regard, the present study investigates the effective factors on entrepreneurial behavior with Fars rural women ecotourism approach in Iran. The participants of the study were 431 of rural women in Fars and 205 were decided by Cochran formula. It is inferred from the results that step-by-step procedure of changing norms towards the acceptance of rural women entrepreneurs as well as the acceptance of ecotourism culture through the establishment of local and regional institutions and organizations in a context of family support with strong bonds of commitment, solidarity, environmental and infrastructural foundations will lead to a strong desire to constitute ecotourism residence by rural women. Purpose: Despite lack of survival benefit, demand for contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) to treat unilateral breast cancer remains high. High uptake of CPM has been demonstrated in Midwestern rural women. Greater travel distance for surgical treatment is associated with CPM. Our objective was to examine the relationship between rurality and travel distance to surgery with CPM. Methods: Women diagnosed with stages I–III unilateral breast cancer between 2007 and 2017 were identified using the National Cancer Database. Logistic regression was used to model likelihood of CPM based on rurality, proximity to metropolitan centers, and travel distance. A multinomial logistic regression model compared factors associated with CPM with reconstruction versus other surgical options. Results: Both rurality (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06–1.15 for non-metro/rural vs. metro) and travel distance (OR 1.37, 95% CI 1.33–1.41 for those who traveled 50 + miles vs. < 30 miles) were independently associated with CPM. For women who traveled 30 + miles, odds of receiving CPM were highest for non-metro/rural women (OR 1.33 for 30–49 miles, OR 1.57 for 50 + miles; reference: metro women traveling < 30 miles). Non-metro/rural women who received reconstruction were more likely to undergo CPM regardless of travel distance (ORs 1.11–1.21). Both metro and metro-adjacent women who received reconstruction were more likely to undergo CPM only if they traveled 30 + miles (ORs 1.24–1.30). Conclusion: The impact of travel distance on likelihood of CPM varies by patient rurality and receipt of reconstruction. Further research is needed to understand how patient residence, travel burden, and geographic access to comprehensive cancer care services, including reconstruction, influence patient decisions regarding surgery. The main objective of this case study was to use children as models to assist their parents in acquiring literacy with the help of a phone-based literacy game. Eight women in rural Zambia were loaned phones with GraphoGameTM, a digital literacy game, to use as a resource for literacy learning, with the assistance of their children. The participants were given literacy tests before the intervention and after their exposure to GraphoGame to determine the impact of the intervention. Analyses using t-tests and a Mann-Whitney U test found that the parents' performance on the literacy tests improved significantly after the intervention period, compared with their pre-intervention performance. Furthermore, key informants indicated that the parents who participated in the study improved their literacy skills in various social and community interactions, as compared with parents within the same community who were not exposed to the game. Thus, the study showed that it is possible to use literacy technology to teach literacy to illiterate rural adults with the help of their children. Time poverty is the time deficit caused by having little to no time for recreational activities owing to significant labour of both paid and unpaid works. Such a time deficit is related to adverse health outcomes and accounts for early withdrawal from the workforce. Research to date does not examine differences in time deficits in India. This study takes advantage of India's first Time-Use Survey collected in 2019 (TUS 2019). It uses total work time (committed time and contracted time) to measure the differences in the time poverty rate for women. In the first step, we identify the overall time poverty rate, which shows that 1 out of every 10 working Indians is extremely time-poor, rearranging between paid and unpaid duties for more than 12 h daily. In the second step, we explore women's work–life conflict and the burden of unpaid labour. While rural women are suffering from a severe labour dilemma, urban women can be observed to make time for themselves. In the third step, the multivariate logistic regression technique is used to understand the impact of critical variables such as educational attainment, marital status, and employment status on time poverty. Avian plumage coloration could be altered by external factors like dust accumulation, but the effect of environmental conditions on such post-moult colour changes are poorly studied. Here, we investigated how exposure to the atmosphere in habitats of differing anthropogenic pressures modifies UV/blue structural plumage coloration — a sexually selected trait in eastern bluebirds Sialia sialis. We collected feather samples from live birds and distributed them in three types of habitats: (i) urban roads with low traffic, (ii) urban roads with high traffic, and (iii) rural roads with low traffic. After 4 weeks, the brightness of feathers decreased in all types of habitats-resulting in less-ornamented coloration. Changes in UV and blue chroma, however, varied with habitat type; chroma decreased in urban areas (becoming less ornamented), but increased in rural locations (becoming more ornamented). According to physiological models of avian colour vision, however, these changes in coloration tended to be below perceptual thresholds. Our results underscore the importance of how human activity can influence plumage colour of individual birds during the period between moult cycles which could have an impact on avian visual signalling. The study opens venues for further studies focusing on how the optical properties of specific airborne particles can influence coloration of wild-living animals. Significance statement: Plumage coloration plays an important role in avian visual communication. In addition to moult-based change, coloration may change between moult cycles due to exposure to external factors like, for example, dust accumulation. Ecological factors modifying a passive plumage change, however, remains poorly studied. We collected samples of structurally coloured feather from a species wherein plumage colour is sexually selected and exposed them to outdoor conditions. We demonstrate that UV/blue chroma of coloration changes differently in urban and rural habitats. It increased in rural and decreased in urban areas. On the other hand, brightness decreased in both habitat types. Using physiological models of avian colour vision, however, we found that these colour changes were likely not perceptible to birds. This study examines the impact of floods on the livelihood of rural Bangladeshi women farmers, such as agriculture, livestock, energy, and water resources, and their adaptation strategies. This research utilizes qualitative and quantitative approaches, focusing more on the qualitative data. Quantitative data were collected using a structured questionnaire with a series of close-ended questions. Key informant interviews and focus group discussions were mainly used to collect qualitative data. A total of 120 samples were drawn by applying snowball sampling from two flood-prone remote villages in Cox's Bazar district, Bangladesh. The sample units were rural women exclusively engaged in farming, different rural income-generating activities, and traditional household responsibilities. Thematic analysis and descriptive statistics were mainly used to analyze qualitative and quantitative data. The study's findings reveal that floods devastate the four sectors of rural women farmers in Bangladesh. However, they apply different adaptation strategies to mitigate the detrimental impact of floods. Empirical evidence also discloses that local knowledge is the primary source among women farmers for developing different adaptation strategies in four sectors such as 60% in agriculture, 70% in livestock, 65% in energy, and 55% in water resource management. According to data, 54% of women respondents reveal that community practice is their primary source of adaptation for crop diversification; in contrast, 47% of participants disclose that family practice is their main adaptation source in gathering animal feed. 7% of interviewees report that their own experience is their major adaptation source in collecting dry leaves and branches of trees for cooking. At the same time, an equal percentage of women disclose that interaction with nature is their key adaptation source in making portable stoves for cooking food during floods. The result further shows that community and family practices are the most common and dominant local knowledge sources among women farmers. Assessing the trend and identifying the factors for the change in modern contraceptive utilization is crucial to design effective measures, but trend analysis was not conducted previously. Thus, this study aimed to assess the trend and determinants of modern contraceptive utilization change among married women in emerging regions of Ethiopia. This study used the 2000 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey and the 2019 Ethiopia Min Demographic and Health Survey datasets for analysis. A total of 2555 and 1916 married women in the 2000 and 2019 surveys were included in the analysis, respectively. The data were analyzed using Stata version 17.0. Logit-based decomposition analysis was executed to identify factors for modern contraceptive utilization change. Statistical significance was declared at a P value of less than 0.05. The trend of contraceptive utilization change increased from 6.26% in 2000 to 21.97% in 2019. About − 65.87% and 165.87% of the change in contraceptive utilization was due to changes in composition and behavior, respectively. The change in composition was due to the change in the composition of women according to religion, educational status, region, and the number of living children. The change in behaviors of not educated women, rural women, Muslim women, and those who resided in the afar region was the source of change in modern contraceptive utilization. Modern contraceptive utilization has increased in the last two decades. The change in modern contraceptive utilization is due to changes in population composition and behavior. Interventions targeting uneducated and rural women are vital to increasing contraceptive utilization. Strategic interventions are also required for the Somali regions of Ethiopia. Challenges to education in rural areas have been reported for a long time, and the respective governments are continuously making efforts to address them. However, the eruption of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the total closure of schools and a surge in internet and distance learning. Hence, there is a need to assess the situation periodically to gauge the effectiveness of government efforts in tackling these challenges and understand the impact of the virus outbreak on the education landscape. This study focuses on rural areas of Pakistan and China, utilizing the Situational Analysis Method (SAM). The study findings revealed several key points. Firstly, in both rural Pakistan and China, Covid-19 led to an increase in the number and scope of distance learning activities. However, there is a need for better experiences to effectively manage distance learning for students, parents, and teachers. Moreover, specific issues peculiar to rural China include shortages of relevant facilities such as computers, smartphones, and poor connectivity. In contrast, rural Pakistan faces challenges of unpreparedness and higher teacher workloads. Secondly, since internet connectivity is an essential component for distance learning, rural Pakistan shows higher internet penetration compared to rural areas in China. Nevertheless, internet connection speed in China remains higher and consistent, whether in urban or rural regions. However, both countries struggle with poor internet connection in rural areas due to the lack of enough potential customers. Thirdly, rural education in both countries is plagued by poverty, inadequate funding, and many students having to endure long and hazardous journeys to school. Specific issues in rural China include poor parental care due to migration and a shortage of teachers, while rural Pakistan grapples with limited educational opportunities for children and women, insufficient educational training for teachers, issues of social norms, and attacks on schools by extremist groups. Background: The expansion of human activities and the development of urban centers are among the main driving forces accounting for the transformation and loss of natural environments. At the same time, and especially for some birds, anthropogenic activity provides new habitat resources. This is the case of the Burrowing Parrot (Cyanoliseus patagonus), in and around Bahía Blanca, a city of ca. 335,000 inhabitants in northern Argentinian Patagonia, where urban and rural quarries and constructed ravines on roadsides are where most of its reproductive activity occurs. Methods: In this study we monitored anthropogenic nesting sites and estimated the number of breeding pairs from 2018 to 2023 through censuses conducted annually in 23 colonies within a radius of up to 20 km from the communal roost located in the city. Results: Most of the nesting sites (57%), and the breeding pairs (60 to 80%) were in urban environments, and the remaining in rural areas. Ravines along roadsides and quarries represented the substrate that was most frequently used for nesting. Mean nest density was significantly higher in roadside ravines compared to quarries, and, in turn, higher in urban roadsides compared to rural roadsides. Conclusion: Anthropogenic substrates appear as key components for the reproduction of the species, with possible effects on its numbers. The ability of the Burrowing Parrot to reproduce on artificial substrates in the urban environment, and especially the rapid colonization of recently opened sites, represents a new perspective for the conservation and management of its populations. Purpose: To examine the trends of racial/ethnic and urban–rural disparities in screening mammography use with a focus on Hispanic women in rural Texas, as well as to further investigate barriers to mammography screening practices. Methods: A serial cross-sectional study was conducted on screening mammography including eligible female respondents (≥ 40 years) from the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey from 2002 to 2018. Findings: Weighted descriptive analyses showed persistent racial/ethnic and urban–rural disparities in mammography screening rates among eligible women (≥ 40 years) in Texas. Overall, the mammography screening rates for women in rural areas were significantly lower than women in urban areas with a mean rate of 64.09% versus 70.89% (p < 0.001). Rural Hispanic women had the lowest mean mammography screening rate (55.98%) among all eligible women which is 16.27% below the mean mammography screening rate of non-Hispanic white women in urban areas. Weighted logistic regression model revealed that women with no health insurance or primary care providers were 52% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 0.36–0.63, p < 0.001) or 54% (95% CI 0.35–0.6, p < 0.001) less likely having an up-to-date mammography screening compared with women with health insurance or primary care providers, respectively. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated significant and persistent racial and urban–rural disparities in screening mammography utilization among Hispanic women compared with non-Hispanic white women from 2002 to 2018. Healthcare access is a major contributor to these disparities. It highlights the need for wide-scale interventions from public health and policymakers targeting under screened racial minorities and rural regions population to promote screening mammography services among disadvantaged population. Purpose of review: Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C or FGM) are procedures that involve partial or total removal of external female genitalia and other injuries to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Over 4 million girls are at risk of FGM annually. Since urogynecologic and obstetric complications of FGM have been extensively described and characterized, the aim of this review is to shift the focus on other aspects like perception of women, awareness of community, and knowledge of health workers. Our purpose is to highlight those aspects and understand how their grasp might help to eradicate this practice. Recent findings: Self-perception of women with FGM changes when they emigrate to western countries; awareness of complications and awareness of their rights are factors that make women reject the practice. Women from rural areas, already circumcised, or without a secondary level education are more likely to have a circumcised daughter. Women with at least a secondary education are more likely to agree with the eradication of the practice. Lack of education and poor wealth index are factors associated with men's support of FGM. Although aware of FGM, healthcare professionals need to be trained on this topic. General practitioners play a central role in addressing patients with FGM to the right path of diagnosis and treatment and psychologists in helping them with psychological sequelae. Poverty eradication, environmental conservation, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals cannot be achieved without the input and participation of disadvantaged communities in developing mitigation strategies. Over the last few decades, the markets for natural resources as niche products have grown exponentially. Morocco's production and international sales of argan oil are set to exceed current figures within the decade. We interviewed presidents of cooperatives in several villages in the Souss Massa region of Morocco to assess the current status of the argan oil trade, in particular women's roles in production, their economic status, and whether they have access to benefit sharing (ABS). Our results reveal that control over the argan oil trade has shifted into intermediaries that supply larger corporations, and that the survival of cooperatives and women's access to vital income are increasingly threatened. We argue thatthe implementation of ABS is essential to preserve women's access to income and their traditional knowledge associated with oil extraction processes and to ensure the conservation of argan ecosystems as prescribed by the Nagoya Protocol. Women play an important role in agriculture and rural economic development. Gender access to farmland and its impact on agricultural productivity, as well as gender-based sustainable livelihoods, are all part of rural development policy. Understanding or gaining insight into gender access to agricultural land and long-term sustainability aids in improving the needs of rural women in land acquisition. The purpose of this study was to investigate gender access to farmland and its impact on agricultural productivity and gender sustainable livelihood, as well as the constraints and methods involved in farmland access and acquisition. A quantitative approach was used in the study. Data were collected through questionnaire from 120 rural farmers from four communities using a simple random sampling method. The findings revealed that insufficient fertile farmland is a major factor influencing agricultural productivity. In the study areas, patriarchal inheritance emerged as the primary mode of farmland access and acquisition, but it also acted as a constraint to gender farmland access. Due to patriarchy, male farmers were said to have easier access to farmland than their female partners. The study also concluded that women are marginalized when it comes to acquiring land for agricultural production, which has an impact on the gender's long-term livelihood sustainability. Gender has been broadly acknowledged to play an essential role in a household's food security. However, most of the existing studies have assessed the potential contribution of gender to food security based on sex disaggregation only (women vs. men). We revisit the relationship between gender and food security by focusing simultaneously on two core elements of gender: access to and control over productive resources. We use primary data collected from 295 households randomly selected in two districts in Benin to fit a generalized structural equation model. Our results showed four types of households: households without women's access and control of resources, households with women's access to capital only, households with women access to all resources and households with access and control over resources. Households with access and control over resources are the majority of the sample of households surveyed, while households without women's access and control of resources occupied 5.9% of the households surveyed. Households, where women have full access to and control over resources, are less exposed to food insecurity. This result holds true in households where women contribute to food expenditures. The expenditures are on products with high nutritional value. Women who control resources with no expenditure on food, like men, did not influence household food insecurity. We recommend particular attention to women's empowerment within their households to reduce food insecurity in developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
