Animal behavior emerges from integration of many processes with different spatial and temporal scales. Dynamical behavioral patterns, including daily and ultradian rhythms and the dynamical microstructure of behavior (i.e., autocorrelations properties), can be differentially affected by external cues. Identifying these patterns is important for understanding how organisms adapt to their environment, yet unbiased methods to quantify dynamical changes over multiple temporal scales are lacking. Herein, we combine a wavelet approach with Detrended Fluctuation Analysis to identify behavioral patterns and evaluate changes over 42-days in mice subjected to different dietary restriction paradigms. We show that feeding restriction alters dynamical patterns: not only are daily rhythms modulated but also the presence, phase and/or strength of ~12h-rhythms, as well as the nature of autocorrelation properties of feed-intake and wheel running behaviors. These results highlight the underlying complexity of behavioral architecture and offer insights into the multi-scale impact of feeding habits on physiology. Context: Along with forage availability, rangeland’s carrying capacity (CC) is determined by other landscape features limiting the spatial distribution of the animals, such as water sources or topography. However, livestock management is often based on the stock adjustment to an estimated CC, assuming that the animals use the entire paddocks and wild herbivores are absent. Objectives: Our objectives were to address how the CC estimation deviates from the classic outcome when the effective space use by livestock is considered, and when the forage consumption by co-occurring wild herbivore is accounted for. Finally, we evaluated large herbivores densities regarding this mixed CC. Methods: Based on herbivore counts and geo-referenced explanatory variables within a ranch of Chubut, Argentina, we predicted sheep and guanaco distribution at a scale of 0.25 km2 cells. Addressing the relationship between the predicted sheep stock and the CC in each cell, we then re-calculated the CC adjusted by spatial use. We also estimated a mixed CC by computing the forage consumption by sheep and guanacos. Results: Sheep distribution was shaped mainly by drinking water location, promoting over and under-grazed areas. Guanaco distribution pattern opposed livestock density. Accounting for the restrictions in sheep spatial use resulted in a reduction of the estimated CC compared to the classic approach, whereas the mixed approach resulted in higher CC estimates. Conclusions: Accounting for herbivore presence and distribution modifies the CC estimation and therefore the diagnosis of overstock situations. The tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) is the smallest member of the family Lepisosteidae; yet this species has a large socioeconomic impact in México and Central America where it is traditionally harvested commercially and for subsistence. While natural populations of tropical gar have been dwindling throughout its natural range, it is also an emergent aquaculture species that is produced in local hatcheries and grown out in privately owned ponds. The increased pressure on natural populations of A. tropicus and its increasing use in aquaculture production poses potential conflicts for the management and conservation of natural populations. Here, we investigated the population genetic structure of tropical gar populations, including over 200 individuals sampled in México, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. Using 11 microsatellite loci, we identified three genetic clusters with distinct geographic distributions, including a cluster in drainages along the Pacific versant of Central America, a cluster in the Grijalva and Usumacinta River basins that drain into the Gulf of México, and a cluster in the Río San Juan that drains into the Caribbean Sea. Given the degree of divergence observed, these results indicate the potential presence of evolutionary significant units within tropical gar that warrant separate fisheries and conservation management. We also found that tropical gar from an aquaculture facility along the Pacific versant of México were derived from Atlantic versant populations, indicating that individuals have already been translocated across biogeographic boundaries. We discuss how such translocations can negatively impact the natural population structure of tropical gar and provide recommendations for future research and aquaculture practices. Dietary restriction (DR) decreases body weight, improves health, and extends lifespan. DR can be achieved by controlling how much and/or when food is provided, as well as by adjusting nutritional composition. Because these factors are often combined during DR, it is unclear which are necessary for beneficial effects. Several drugs have been utilized that target nutrient-sensing gene pathways, many of which change expression throughout the day, suggesting that the timing of drug administration is critical. Here, we discuss how dietary and pharmacological interventions promote a healthy lifespan by influencing energy intake and circadian rhythms. Circadian clocks link physiologic processes to environmental conditions and a mismatch between internal and external rhythms has negative effects on organismal health. Low birth weight (LBW) is a global problem that annually affects nearly 20 million children, 96% of these in developing countries. According to the WHO, the poorest and the ethnic minorities are the groups most affected by this indicator. A cross-sectional study of the database of all newborns officially registered in Colombia in 2008–2014 was done. While dichotomizing the mestizo population and ethnic minorities (Afro-descendants, indigenous, ROM), normal and low birth weight was used as the dependent variable and ethnicity as the explanatory variable. Other variables of the parents and the newborns were used as covariates. To assess associations, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. The incidence of LBW among newborns registered in Colombia fluctuated at around 9%. Among the ethnic minorities, the probability of LBW, adjusted for other variables, was significantly higher (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.05–1.08) than among mestizos. Severe (grades IV and V) vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a risk factor for acute pyelonephritis, renal scars, and renal failure. This study evaluates albumin and N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) urinary excretion, and renal concentrating ability as screening tools to select patients for voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG). Children (111 M, 52 F) aged 10.97 ± 21.17 months (mean + SD), diagnosed with UTI, and who had undergone renal ultrasound and a VCUG, underwent a desmopressin test and had albumin/creatinine and NAG/creatinine urinary excretion measured. Urine osmolality was significantly lower in 27 children with severe VUR (375.3 ± 171.8 mOsm/kg; mean + SD) compared to 100 patients with normal VCUG (611.5 ± 175.8 mOsm/kg), p < 0.001, and to 36 patients with VUR grades I to III (636.2 ± 180.2 mOsm/kg), p < 0.001. NAG/creatinine ratio was significantly elevated in 20 children with severe VUR (26.4 (28.3) U/g); median and interquartile range compared to 67 children with normal VCUG (10.8 (17.9) U/g), p = 0.003, and to 20 patients with VUR grades I to III (7.6 (21.1) U/g), p = 0.009.Conclusions: Urinary osmolality is significantly decreased and urinary excretion of NAG is significantly increased in patients with severe VUR. These tests could select patients for VCUG to assess for severe VUR. What is Known: • Severe vesicoureteral reflux (SVUR) may contribute to renal damage. Severe vesicoureteral reflux is diagnosed by voiding cystourethrogram and represents about 10% of all patients with VUR. Currently, there are no reliable tests used prior to VCUG to help on the decision of obtaining a VCUG to diagnose SVUR. Wines can be modified by microorganisms during the ageing process, by producing off-flavours like volatile phenols (VP), leading to their deterioration, with great economic losses. The development of methods to recover wines affected by unwanted VP became an important target. Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic materials with artificially-generated recognition sites for selective extraction of organic compounds from different matrices. In this work, two MIPs to remove unwanted VP from wines were developed and their effects were evaluated. Volatile compounds were determined by GC-FID and GC-IT/MS and phenolic compounds (non-coloured and anthocyanins) by HPLC-DAD. The treatment with MIP-4EG and MIP-4EP significantly reduced the content of 4-ethylguaiacol and 4-ethylphenol, respectively. Nevertheless, the changes observed in wine non-coloured and coloured phenolics and sensorial analysis indicate that their specificity and selectivity regarding off-flavours still needs to be improved. Botrytis cinerea is one of the most relevant plant pathogenic fungi. The first step during its infection process is the germination of the conidia. Here, we report on the first proteome analysis during the germination of B. cinerea conidia, where 204 spots showed significant differences in their accumulation between ungerminated and germinated conidia by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and qPCR. The identified proteins were grouped by gene ontology revealing that the infective tools are mainly preformed inside the ungerminated conidia allowing a quick fungal development at the early stages of conidial germination. From 118 identified spots, several virulence factors have been identified while proteins, such as mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6,7-dimethyl-8-ribityllumazine synthase or uracil phosphoribosyltransferase, have been disclosed as a new potential virulence factors in botrytis whose role in pathogenicity needs to be studied to gain new insights about the role of these proteins as therapeutic targets and virulence factors. In recent years, part feeding at assembly lines has become a critical issue as the result of a high level of product customization. The assembly line part feeding problem is a complex problem in which a number of decisions should be made in order to select the right quantity of each part to be supplied at the right time under a set of constraints. This study aims to cope with the part feeding problem at assembly lines by introducing a new memetic ant colony optimization-based heuristic algorithm. Due to the novelty of the problem and in order to evaluate the performance of the proposed memetic algorithm, a mathematical formulation is also presented. Case data from an automobile manufacturer and a set of generated instances are used to test both the mathematical model and the proposed memetic algorithm. The results reveal that although it is computationally difficult to solve the problem using the exact mathematical model, the mimetic algorithm was able to find sufficiently good solutions in a short period of time. Aims: The extent to which the spatial and temporal patterns of soil microbial and available nutrient pools hold across different Mediterranean forest types is unclear impeding the generalization needed to consolidate our understanding on Mediterranean ecosystems functioning. Methods: We explored the response of soil microbial, total, organic and inorganic extractable nutrient pools (C, N and P) to common sources of variability, namely habitat (tree cover), soil depth and season (summer drought), in three contrasting Mediterranean forest types: a Quercus ilex open woodland, a mixed Q. suber and Q. canariensis woodland and a Pinus sylvestris forest. Results: Soil microbial and available nutrient pools were larger beneath tree cover than in open areas in both oak woodlands whereas the opposite trend was found in the pine forest. The greatest differences in soil properties between habitat types were found in the open woodland. Season (drought effect) was the main driver of variability in the pine forest and was related to a loss of microbial nutrients (up to 75 % loss of N and P) and an increase in microbial ratios (C/N, C/P) from Spring to Summer in all sites. Nutrient pools consistently decreased with soil depth, with microbial C, N and P in the top soil being up to 208 %, 215 % and 274 % larger than in the deeper soil respectively. Conclusions: Similar patterns of variation emerged in relation to season and soil depth across the three forest types whereas the direction and magnitude of the habitat (tree cover) effect was site-dependent, possibly related to the differences in tree species composition and forest structure, and thus in the quality and distribution of the litter input. Spectrophotometry is an analytical technique that is studied at the university level because of its ease of operation and low expense. Three different experimental methods of gradual difficulty are proposed for the application of this technique to the simultaneous determination of two metals. The techniques are applicable to the practice of all subdisciplines of experimental chemistry. These techniques are (1) absorption spectrophotometry, the determination of cobalt (II) and copper (II); (2) first-derivative spectrophotometry, the determination of chromium (III) and copper (II); and (3) first-derivative spectrophotometry using the zero-crossing method, the determination of copper (II) and mercury (II).
