There is growing interest in decolonizing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and embedding cultural practices into social and medical services in Hawai'i. Wahine ("woman") Talk is a multilevel, comprehensive SRH program for female youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) led by community health, social work, and medical providers. This study examines youth and program provider perspectives of culturally based approaches that may strengthen SRH programs. The study team conducted three focus groups and ten in-depth interviews with participating youth and program providers after the program's conclusion. Youth participants were aged 14 to 22 years (M = 18.1) and of Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander ancestry. Interview transcripts were analyzed using structured thematic analysis. The youth described feeling estranged from their ancestral cultures and suggested incorporating multiple cultural practices to enhance their connection to community, body, and land into SRH programming for YEH. They identified several ʻāina ("land")–based approaches, hands-on learning, hula, and language as possible practices to weave into the program. While youth felt estranged from their ancestral cultures, they discussed Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander health perspectives where ʻāina and relationships are considered life-sustaining. Youth and program staff stressed incorporating culture respectfully, caring for the whole person, and providing trauma-informed care. Future policy, practice, and research should consider protecting and integrating Native Hawaiian conceptions of health into SRH policy and practice and include youths' cultural identities in SRH intervention development. Purpose: Children of young parents are at elevated risk for child abuse and neglect due to myriad challenges. Despite the dual need for parenting support and mental health support, most literature and programs separate these and do not address maltreated parenting youths' intergenerational context. The current study explores parenting and mental health needs as intertwined, uplifting experiences of young adult mothers with child maltreatment histories, professionals serving them, and mothers' own caregivers. Method: Through a community-engaged research process, this grounded theory study was co-conceptualized and conducted through a university-community-based organization partnership. We conducted in-depth interviews with 23 participants: nine young, maltreated mothers aged 18–25 (M = 20.9) years, 14 professionals and two caregivers. Data were collected in the community and analyzed using grounded theory methods. We transcribed each interview and analyzed the transcripts using a structured process of open, focus, axial, and selective/theoretical coding. Rigor was enhanced through several strategies including reflexivity and member checking. Results: Grounded theory analysis produced a detailed model of the process of accessing and receiving mental health and parenting support among young, maltreated mothers, including (1) Reckoning with the Impact of Childhood and Adolescent Trauma on Mental Health and Parenting; (2) Reaching Out; (3) Receiving Parenting Support; (4) Receiving Mental Health Support; and (5) Seeking a Change. Conclusions: Findings support a comprehensive approach for supporting young parents in improving the trajectories of their families through integrated approaches to parenting and mental health intervention. Purpose: There are gaps in our knowledge to provide quality cancer care to the growing numbers of survivors. Leveraging existing data to answer survivorship research questions is one approach to address these gaps. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to replicate and expand a previous report of existing cancer survivorship survey data.Methods: We conducted a trifold search strategy for relevant surveys and data sets to (1) determine the extent to which cancer survivors are being surveyed, (2) determine the topics being covered in these surveys, and (3) create a compendium of information about these surveys and data sets, so researchers can conduct additional analyses.Results: Thirty-five surveys were identified and included in this report; most were longitudinal studies (71%) in adult cancer survivors (91%). The domains addressed in these surveys were general medical characteristics, medical conditions, costs, employment, symptoms and/or side effects, psychosocial factors and coping, perceived quality of care, and health behaviors.Conclusions: Existing data are available for researchers to explore new knowledge to enhance cancer survivorship quality care. This is an opportunity to fully utilize existing data to answer survivorship questions in a cost effective manner.Implications For Cancer Survivors: Survivors should be encouraged to participate in research studies as these data can close the gap in our knowledge and care of this growing population. Women experience a higher incidence of oral diseases including periodontal diseases and temporomandibular joint disease (TMD) implicating the role of estrogen signaling in disease pathology. Fluctuating levels of estrogen during childbearing age potentiates facial pain, high estrogen levels during pregnancy promote gingivitis, and low levels of estrogen during menopause predisposes the TMJ to degeneration and increases alveolar bone loss. In this review, an overview of estrogen signaling pathways in vitro and in vivo that regulate pregnancy-related gingivitis, TMJ homeostasis, and alveolar bone remodeling is provided. Deciphering the specific estrogen signaling pathways for individual oral diseases is crucial for potential new drug therapies to promote and maintain healthy tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) has been implicated in a host of cognitive and behavioral processes in addition to serving as a central hub in the default mode network (DMN). Moreover, the PCC has been shown to be involved in a range of psychiatric and neurological disorders. However, very little is known about the specific activated/deactivated functional profiles of the PCC. Here, we employed a dual analytic approach using robust quantitative meta-analytical connectivity modeling (MACM) and ultra-high field, high resolution resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to identify state-specific functional activity patterns of the human PCC. The MACM results provided evidence for regions of convergence for PCC co-activation and co-deactivation (i.e., left medial frontal gyrus, left amygdala, and left anterior cingulate) as well as regions of divergence specific to either PCC activation (i.e., bilateral inferior frontal gyri) or PCC deactivation (i.e., left parahippocampal gyrus). In addition, exploratory MACMs on dorsal and ventral subregions of the PCC revealed differential functional activity patterns such as greater co-activation of the right PCC and left inferior parietal lobule with the dorsal PCC and greater co-activation of right precuneus with the ventral PCC. Resting state connectivity analyses showed widespread connectivity similar to that of the PCC co-activation-based MACM, but also demonstrated additional regions of activity, including bilateral superior parietal regions and right superior temporal regions. These analyses highlight the diverse neurofunctional repertoire of the human PCC, provide additional insight into its dynamic functional activity patterns as it switches between activated and deactivated states, and elucidates the cognitive processes that may be implicated in clinical populations. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) provides us an insight into the micro-architecture of white-matter tracts in the brain. This method has proved promising in understanding and investigating the neuronal tracts and structural connectivity between the brain regions in primates as well as rodents. The close evolutionary relationship between canines and humans may have spawned a unique bond in regard to social cognition rendering them useful as an animal model in translational research. In this study, we acquired diffusion data from anaesthetized dogs and created a DTI-based atlas for a canine model which could be used to investigate various white matter diseases. We illustrate the application of this atlas by calculating DTI tractography based structural connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) regions of the default mode network (DMN) in dogs. White matter connectivity was investigated to provide structural basis for the functional dissociation observed between the anterior and posterior parts of DMN. A comparison of the integrity of long range structural connections (such as in the DMN) between dogs and humans is likely to provide us with new perspectives on the neural basis of the evolution of cognitive functions.
