Purpose: In resistance training (RT), the change in volume-load from training sessions (TS) to TS is an indicator of training progress. Resulting growth trajectories are likely to differ between individuals. Understanding this variation is important for exercise planning in general, but even more for clinical populations. We investigated this variation in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment. Methods: Data of 69 patients from two randomized controlled trails were investigated. They conducted a 12-week RT program. We fitted a quadratic Bayesian regression model to the baseline standardized volume-load over the course of the intervention. We allowed all parameters to vary both between exercises and between individuals. Results: We observed a positive linear component of 0.093 (95% uncertainty interval (UI) 0.058 to 0.120) and a negative quadratic component of − 0.002 (95% UI -0.008 to 0.001) for the mean trajectory of the change in volume-load. For the different exercises, we observed a dispersion for both the linear (0.043, 95% UI 0.018 to 0.082) and the quadratic component (0.002, 95% UI < 0.001 to 0.004). Variation between individual appears to be approximately four times larger. We also observed between-exercise variation within individuals. Extrapolation of the regression model indicates training progression stagnates after 20.6 TS (95% UI 14.8 to 44.4). Conclusion: There is substantial variation in RT response between breast cancer patients undergoing tumor therapy and in-between exercises. The non-linear trajectory indicates that training progression will eventually plateau, demanding periodization and timely modification. Over the last two decades, the analogue report task has become a standard method for measuring the fidelity of visual representations across research domains including perception, attention, and memory. Despite its widespread use, there has been no methodical investigation of the different task parameters that might contribute to response variability. To address this gap, we conducted two experiments manipulating components of a typical analogue report test of memory for colour hue. We found that human response errors were independently affected by changes in storage and maintenance requirements of the task, demonstrated by a strong effect of set size even in the absence of a memory delay. In contrast, response variability remained unaffected by physical size of the colour wheel, implying negligible contribution of motor noise to task performance, or by its chroma radius, highlighting non-uniformity of the standard colour space. Comparing analogue report to a matched forced-choice task, we found variation in adjustment criterion made a limited contribution to analogue report variability, becoming meaningful only with low representational noise. Our findings validate the analogue report task as a robust measure of representational fidelity for most purposes, while also quantifying non-representational sources of noise that would limit its reliability in specialized settings. Adult visual plasticity underlying local remodeling of the cortical circuitry in vivo appears to be associated with a spatiotemporal pattern of strongly increased spontaneous and evoked activity of populations of cells. Here we review and discuss pioneering work by us and others about principles of plasticity in the adult visual cortex, starting with our study which showed that a confined lesion in the cat retina causes increased excitability in the affected region in the primary visual cortex accompanied by fine-tuned restructuring of neuronal function. The underlying remodeling processes was further visualized with voltage-sensitive dye (VSD) imaging that allowed a direct tracking of retinal lesion-induced reorganization across horizontal cortical circuitries. Nowadays, application of noninvasive stimulation methods pursues the idea further of increased cortical excitability along with decreased inhibition as key factors for the induction of adult cortical plasticity. We used high-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), for the first time in combination with VSD optical imaging, and provided evidence that TMS-amplified excitability across large pools of neurons forms the basis for noninvasively targeting reorganization of orientation maps in the visual cortex. Our review has been compiled on the basis of these four own studies, which we discuss in the context of historical developments in the field of visual cortical plasticity and the current state of the literature. Overall, we suggest markers of LTP-like cortical changes at mesoscopic population level as a main driving force for the induction of visual plasticity in the adult. Elevations in excitability that predispose towards cortical plasticity are most likely a common property of all cortical modalities. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (n.d.) suggests that acquisition and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is dynamic and that learning multiple modalities may be beneficial particularly for those individuals with severe disabilities. Evaluation of response variability after training multiple modalities has yet to be explored. One advantage of learning multiple modalities manifests when an individual encounters communication breakdowns. Researchers replicated the procedures of Adami et al. (Behav Anal Pract 10:209-213, 2017) using a B-A-B-A design to determine the impact of lag schedules of reinforcement on response variability and persistence after participants learned two modalities simultaneously. Results demonstrated all three participants interchanged modalities and responding persisted when faced with a challenge to treatment in the form of a lag schedule. The Lag 1 schedule yielded higher variation of responding in comparison to the Lag 0 conditions. The current study extends response variability literature and preliminarily suggests that adding contrived communication breakdowns into AAC training may strengthen an individual’s multimodal communication repertoire. Contrast perception is a fundamental visual ability that allows us to distinguish objects from the background. However, whether it is perturbed by chronic exposure to environmental xenoestrogen, bisphenol A (BPA), is still elusive. Here, we used adult cats to explore BPA-induced changes in contrast sensitivity (CS) and its underlying neuronal coding mechanism. Behavioral results showed that 14 days of BPA exposure (0.4 mg/kg/day) was sufficient to induce CS declines at the tested spatial frequencies (0.05–2 cycles/deg) in all four cats. Furthermore, based on multi-channel electrophysiological recording and interneuronal correlation analysis, we found that the BPA-exposed cats exhibited an obvious up-regulation in noise correlation in the primary visual cortex (area 17, A17), thus providing a population neuronal coding basis for their perceptual dysfunction. Moreover, single neuron responses in A17 of BPA-exposed cats revealed a slight but marked decrease in CS compared to that of control cats. Additionally, these neuronal responses presented an overt decrease in signal-to-noise ratio, accompanied by increased trial-to-trial response variability (i.e., noise). To some extent, these neuron population and unit dysfunctions in A17 of BPA-exposed cats were attributable to decreased response activity of fast-spiking neurons. Molecular biomarkers, like gene transcripts or enzyme activities, are potentially powerful tools for early warning assessment of pollution. However, a thorough understanding of response and baseline variation is required to distinguish actual effects from pollution. Here, we assess the freshwater mussel Anodonta anatina as a biomarker model species for freshwater ecosystems, by testing responses of six transcriptional (cat, gst, hsp70, hsp90, mt, and sod) and two biochemical (AChE and GST) biomarkers to environmentally relevant Cu water concentrations. Mussels (n = 20), collected from a stream free from point source pollution, were exposed in the laboratory, for 96 h, to Cu treatments (< 0.2 μg/L, 0.77 ± 0.87 μg/L, and 6.3 ± 5.4 μg/L). Gills and digestive glands were extracted and analyzed for transcriptional and biochemical responses. Biological and statistical effect sizes from Cu treatments were in general small (mean log2 fold-change ≤ 0.80 and Cohen's f ≤ 0.69, respectively), and no significant treatment effects were observed. In contrast, four out of eight biomarkers (cat, gst, hsp70, and GST) showed a significant sex:tissue interaction, and additionally one (sod) showed significant overall effects from sex. Specifically, three markers in gills (cat, mt, GST) and one in digestive gland (AChE) displayed significant sex differences, independent of treatment. Results suggest that sex or tissue effects might obscure low-magnitude biomarker responses and potential early warnings. While diverging efficacy and inter-individual response variability have repeatedly been reported for paired-associative stimulation (PAS), approaches to overcome these issues are yet lacking. Hence, the aim of the present study was to determine whether response variability could be reduced through the application of an individualized PAS paradigm. Changes of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) elicited motor-evoked potentials (MEP) following different PAS paradigms were assessed in three experimental conditions. According to a within-subjects design, 21 participants received three consecutive PAS paradigms differing with respect to the applied inter-stimulus intervals (ISI) between peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) and TMS. Based on foregoing considerations, we compared fixed ISI of 25 ms (PAS 25) and 22 ms (PAS 22) to an individualized PAS paradigm accounting for conduction time differences on the single subject level (iPAS). Overall, we did not observe significantly increased post-stimulation MEP magnitudes in any of the three experimental paradigms. Explorative analyses revealed increased inter-individual response variability in case of PAS 25 and PAS 22 compared to higher rates of expected MEP magnitude increases in case of our iPAS paradigm. The findings of our proof-of-concept study points towards a potential association of decreased inter-individual variability with individually selected ISI that account for differences in conduction time. However, as our findings did not reach the significance threshold, our study highlights the issue of intra-individual variability in PAS paradigms. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is a tool used by individuals unable to communicate or experience difficulty communicating vocally. Previous research has demonstrated that individuals will vary their communicative responding when reinforcement is delayed and when the response effort to communicate is increased. This study evaluated the effect of adjusting these variables to alter responding of three elementary age individuals with autism spectrum disorder who used AAC. A reversal design allowed for an evaluation of a functional relation between delay to reinforcement, response effort, and communication response allocation. When these parameters were changed, two participants shifted their responding while the third participant maintained his response allocation. This research provides further evidence that altering delay to reinforcement and response effort may aid in moving an individual from an AAC to spoken language. The researchers discuss outcomes in terms of how these variables can be manipulated in practice and the potential for altering other parameters of reinforcement in context of communication training. In the majority of the researches presented so far for behavior analysis of complex structures with random loading and material properties, the applications rather than the analysis algorithms have been extended. The present paper is devoted to extending the probabilistic concepts to achieve a stochastic finite element-based consistent reliability algorithm that is more consistent with the design criteria. The proposed procedure is very general and may be employes for vehcle components with complex geometries and load conditions. However, beam-type vehicle components experience simultaneous spatially-random loading conditions and material properties are employed to clarify the proposed algorithm, without loss of the generality. In this regard, important concepts such as the displacement/stress level-crossing concept are incorporated. The stress stochastic formulations are proposed in the present paper, for the first time. Working memory (WM) dysfunction and increased within-subject variability are known issues in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients. Little is known about the electrophysiological characteristics of this variability. We evaluated behavioral and electrophysiological within-subject variability taking developmental aspects into account in a group of ADHD patients. Multichannel ( n = 31) event-related potentials (ERP) were measured during a visuo-spatial backmatching task; 44 children (8-16 years old) were tested: 22 children with ADHD, combined ( n = 17) and inattentive ( n = 5) type, and 22 age- and intelligence-matched control children. One-backmatching (BM1) and two-backmatching (BM2) tasks were performed. Classical behavioral parameters and target and nontarget ERP were compared between groups. In addition, motor response variability and ERP amplitude variability were studied. Age-related changes in both motor response and ERP amplitude variability were analyzed in each group. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder children made more commission errors, which was more pronounced in the difficult (BM2) task. No difference between groups was found in ERP amplitude and in motor response variability. However, ADHD patients had higher ERP amplitude variability, which was again more pronounced in the difficult WM task. A delayed maturation of amplitude variability was seen in ADHD patients with a slower than in controls decrease in variability with age. This amplitude variability was correlated with the number of commissions, but in an opposite way for ADHD and control children. Our findings indicate an impaired visuo-spatial WM processing in ADHD children with greater ERP amplitude variability compared to controls. In this paper, we aim to propose a stochastic finite element formulation having a capability of considering triple random parameters, i.e. elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and thickness of plate, simultaneously in the evaluation of response variability of plates. The effects of cross-correlations between the three random parameters on the response variability are also observed. The generalized auto- and cross-correlation functions that are needed in the evaluation of response covariance are derived based on the general expression for the n-th moment of random variables. In order to demonstrate the adequacy of the proposed scheme, we employ a square plate with various boundary conditions as an example, and the results are compared with those given in the literature as well as with the results of Monte Carlo analysis. Fifteen children with ADHD aged 8 to 12 years and age and gender matched controls performed two different stopping tasks to examine response performance and inhibition and their respective moment-to-moment variability. One task was the well-established stop-signal task, while the other was a novel tracking task where the children tracked a spaceship on the screen until an alarm indicated they should stop. Although performance was discrete in the stop signal task and continuous in the tracking task, in both tasks latencies to the stop signal were significantly slowed in children with ADHD. Go performance and variability did not significantly differ between ADHD and control children in either task. Importantly, stopping latency in the novel spaceship tracking task also was more variable in children with ADHD. As stopping variability cannot be measured using the standard stop signal task, the new task offers compelling support for the heretofore untested prediction that stopping is both slowed and more variable in children with ADHD. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) vary in size from one stimulus to the next. The objective of this study was to determine the cause and source of trial-to-trial MEP size variability. In two experiments involving 10 and 14 subjects, the variability of MEPs to cortical stimulation (cortical-MEPs) in abductor digiti minimi (ADM) and abductor hallucis (AH) was compared to those responses obtained using the triple stimulation technique (cortical-TST). The TST eliminates the effects of motor neuron (MN) response desynchronization and of repetitive MN discharges. Submaximal stimuli were used in both techniques. In six subjects, cortical-MEP variability was compared to that of brainstem-MEP and brainstem-TST. Variability was greater for MEPs than that for TST responses, by approximately one-third. The variability was the same for cortical- and brainstem-MEPs and was similar in ADM and AH. Variability concerned at least 10–15% of the MN pool innervating the target muscle. With the stimulation parameters used, repetitive MN discharges did not influence variability. For submaximal stimuli, approximately two-third of the observed MEP size variability is caused by the variable number of recruited alpha-MNs and approximately one-third by changing synchronization of MN discharges. We have studied the contribution of feedback signals originating from one of the “form-processing” extrastriate cortical areas, area 21a (A21a), to orientation selectivity of single neurons in the ipsilateral area 17 (A17). Consistent with previous findings, reversible inactivation (cooling to 5–10°C) of area 21a resulted in a substantial reduction in the magnitude of the maximum response ( R max) of A17 cells accompanied by some changes in the half-width at half-height of the R max (HWHH). By fitting model functions to the neurons’ response profiles we found that in the vast majority of orientation-tuned A17 cells tested (30/39, 77%), inactivation of A21a resulted in a “flattening” of their orientation-tuning curves. It is characterised by a substantial reduction in the R max associated with either a broadening of the orientation-tuning curves (17 cells) or a relatively small reduction (12 cells) or no change (1 cell) in the HWHH. When the “flattening” effect was quantified using a simple ratio index or R/ W, defined as R max/HWHH, we found that R/ W was significantly reduced during inactivation of A21a. The change in R/ W is strongly correlated with the change in the maximum slope of the orientation-tuning curves. Furthermore, analysis of response variability indicates that “signal-to-noise” ratio of the responses of A17 neurons decreases during inactivation of A21a. Our results suggest that the predominately excitatory feedback signals originating from A21a play a role in enhancing orientation selectivity of A17 neurons and hence are likely to improve overall orientation discriminability. The recorded responses of single neurons often vary considerably in the numbers of spikes emitted across repeats of a single experimental condition. Because of this irregularity and for theoretical convenience the responses are often approximated using a Poisson process. However, it has been frequently pointed out that many details of the responses, including the distribution of spike counts across similar trials, are not consistent with a Poisson process, even an inhomogeneous one. Wiener and Richmond (2003, J Neurosci 23:2394-2406) showed that the spike count distributions could usually be fitted nicely by mixtures of a few (1-3) Poisson distributions, a step they regarded as a computational convenience. Now, we find that a substantial proportion (47%) of the neuronal responses from anterior cingulate cortex, which we conceptualize as part of a system related to the balance between work and reward, have responses with multimodal firing rate distributions. When these distributions are modeled as mixtures of Poisson distributions, the proportions of the different Poisson distributions are related to behavioral state, and might be related to cognitive factors. Behavior is controlled by neural activity in the brain. The final outcome of this neural control may critically depend on the firing reliability of individual neurons. A nearly constant, proportional relationship is usually found between the response mean and response variance. Here we asked whether lateral interactions within striate cortex that modulate response magnitude also proportionately modify the response variance of cortical neurons. In many cases, response variability depended on stimulus organization: discrete flankers colinearly placed well outside the neuron's receptive field increased response magnitude without a proportional increase in variance, thus improving the neuron's response reliability. Since colinear flanker facilitation is often seen near the neuron's firing threshold, increased response reliability for weak stimuli may contribute to enhancing perceptual saliency. In order to test Kissin's (1974) concept of 'normalization' by ethanol (deviant prealcohol parameter values becoming less deviant after alcohol) in nonalcoholics, data on unselected mice and nonalcoholic humans were analyzed. These data were on heart rates (HR) of 1055 HS mice and 24 young adults, measured before and after receiving a dose of ethanol (mice: 1.4g/kg, i.p.; humans: 1.3g/kg, oral). Both mice and humans, on the average, show marked 'normalization', initially low HR usually increasing after alcohol, and initially high HR usually decreasing. The correlation between (1) deviation in HR from the prealcohol mean and (2) change in HR after alcohol was-0.803 for mice and-0.538 for humans. There is very great individual variability, however, in the degree of this normalizing response, some individuals normalizing strongly and others not at all. Although first described in alcoholics, strong normalization by alcohol of several psychophysiological parameters is now known to occur in mice and seems likely to occur in some nonalcoholic humans. A quantitative analysis of 3,863 rating-scale standard deviations from 259 independent studies investigated relationships between rating-scale response variability and eleven different scale, study participant, methodological, and substantive factors. Statistically significant relationships were obtained for eight of the relationships investigated. In general, number of rating-scale categories, mode of scale administration (self or other), and gender tended to be the most important moderators of response variability. In order to relate single cell performance to behavioral discrimination one needs measurements of the response variance of the units. We recorded from 183 single units of area V1 of monkeys performing an orientation discrimination task. The response variance was found to increase with increasing response strength. This relationship between response variance and response strength was well described by a power function with a power close to one. The response variance was on average 1.9 times the response strength. Despite important differences in preparation, the behaving monkey data are in good agreement with those previously obtained in paralysed and anesthetised animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between the variance and mean rate of discharges of simple cells in the cat striate cortex has been examined when mean rate was varied by changing either stimulus spatial frequency or contrast. In both cases, the variance was related to the mean discharge rate by an exponent of about 1.15; the relation was thus roughly linear. The discharge variance was on average 1.7 times the mean rate for data obtained from measurements of the neurones' spatial frequency tuning curves, and 1.48 times the mean for data from the response-contrast determination. The spontaneous firing of single units in the cat's visual cortex, and their responses to repeated presentations of a constant visual stimulus, have been analysed quantitatively. Although the responses of most cells showed some habituation to the stimulus, this was less extensive than the fluctuations in responsiveness which occurred from one set of presentations to the next, over the course of several minutes. Fluctuations occurred largely independently in both the spontaneous and the stimulus-evoked firing of the cell. This suggests that separate mechanisms determine spontaneous and evoked firing. Quantitative estimates of the reliability (the reciprocal of the variability) of responses were higher if the peak firing rate of the cell was measured, rather than the total number of spikes fired by the cell. The response of single cells in the striate cortex of cat to a moving light bar of variable orientation was measured by a method providing data on the mean response as well as the standard deviation (SD) at the different stimulus orientations. At the optimal stimulus orientation the SD was about 1/3 of the mean response. Marked differences in this respect were found between simple and complex cells, i.e., the SD for the simple cells was about 1/2 of the mean response and about 1/4 for the complex cells. The variation coefficient (Vc = SD/mean) was minimal at the optimal orientation and increased relatively in the same manner for simple and complex cells as the stimulus orientation was varied away from optimal orientation. The Vc varied with the mean response at optimal orientation in a nonlinear manner. A function is proposed which fits this relationship and which is equally applicable for both simple and complex cells. The mean orientation discrimination (MOD) was defined as that change in orientation angle away from the optimal which produced a response statistically different - on the 1 % level - from the response to the optimal orientation. There were differences in MOD between the two sides of the orientation tuning curve: the mean of the smaller of the two values was 13.5 deg and of the larger 19.7 deg. No significant difference in MOD was found between simple and complex cells despite the fact that the halfwidth of the tuning curves for the two cell types was 19.5 deg and 31.6 deg, respectively. The preciseness in localization of the most sensitive part within the receptive field of single cells was calculated from the variability in time of occurrence of the smallest interspike interval. The degree of preciseness was found to be of the order of 1/4 of the receptive field diameter in both simple and complex cells. When nonoptimal stimulus orientations were presented, the preciseness significantly decreased in complex cells whereas it remained unchanged in simple cells. It is suggested that the same type of intracortical wiring produces orientation selectivity in simple and complex cells, and that the differences in tuning width are mainly due to a larger extension of inhibitory fields in the simple cells. Considering the cortical visual cells as elementary units in a network built for orientation detection and discrimination, the tuning width seems of minor importance for that function.
