The gold rush at the end of the nineteenth century in south-eastern Australia resulted in the mobilization and re-deposition of vast quantities of tailings that modified the geomorphology of the associated river valleys. Previous studies of contamination risk in these systems have either been performed directly on mine wastes (e.g., battery sand) or at locations close to historical mine sites but have largely ignored the extensive area of riverine alluvial deposits extending downstream from gold mining locations. Here we studied the distribution of contaminant metal(loids) in the Loddon River catchment, one of the most intensively mined areas of the historical gold-rush period in Australia (1851–1914). Floodplain alluvium along the Loddon River was sampled to capture differences in metal and metalloid concentrations between the anthropogenic floodplain deposits and the underlying original floodplain. Elevated levels of arsenic up to 300 mg-As/kg were identified within the anthropogenic alluvial sediment, well above sediment guidelines (ISQG-high trigger value of 70 ppm) and substantially higher than in the pre-mining alluvium. Maximum arsenic concentrations were found at depth within the anthropogenic alluvium (plume-like), close to the contact with the original floodplain. The results obtained here indicate that arsenic may pose a significantly higher risk within this river catchment than previously assessed through analysis of surface floodplain soils. The risks of this submerged arsenic plume will require further investigation of its chemical form (speciation) to determine its mobility and potential bioavailability. Aquatic bryophytes are frequently used as bioindicators of water quality in rivers. Poor water quality increases physiological stress in moss, and stress levels can be estimated by measuring the concentrations of photosynthetic pigments and by calculating pigmentary indices. However, studies collecting many samples in a short time may need to store them until analysis. In the meantime, the pigments may suffer some degradation. Given the lack of studies on this problem for aquatic bryophytes, this one investigates the effect of three storage methods (refrigerated at 6 °C, frozen at − 20 °C and dried at room temperature) on the concentrations of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, pheophytin a and the following ratios: chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b, D430/D410, D665/D665a, D430/D665 and D480/D665 (where Dx is the absorbance at x nm) in the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica. The results showed that refrigeration was the most suitable method, freezing might be suitable for some parameters, and drying was inadequate for this purpose. We consider unconfined flow in aquifers with a small sloping base, a magnitude of no more than a few percent at maximum and aim the analysis to large-scale regional modeling using analytic elements. We write the equations for the vertically integrated discharge, and find that the resulting two-dimensional discharge vector is rotational, as opposed to the specific discharge vector. We propose an approximate model for describing three-dimensional flow in an aquifer with a sloping base, and apply the approach to cases of flow between two parallel rivers and flow with a well in an aquifer bounded by a long river. Sediment ratings supply an important input to the design of water resources projects. Nevertheless, the accuracy of sediment ratings has remained a matter of concern for hydrologists. The present article investigates both the aspect of improving the accuracy, i.e., modifying the simple rating curve equation by introducing a four-parameter equation and application of ensemble machine learning (ML) and ensemble empirical models, to estimate sediment loads. The ML models include artificial neural networks, multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP), and a hybrid MGGP-based model. Published field data at two measuring stations were used to assess the performance of different models employed in this study. The comparative analysis conducted in this study provides a novel comparison of sediment load estimations for three time scales. For instance, the ML-based simple average ensemble model (i.e., 556.5, 255.0, and 0.759) and the empirical-based nonlinear ensemble model (i.e., 549.1, 378.6, and 0.589) achieved the lowest root-mean-square errors and mean absolute errors and highest determination coefficients for the train and test monthly sediment data of the first station, respectively. Finally, the findings demonstrate that ensemble-based models generally improve the estimates of sediment loads at daily, 10-daily, and monthly scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The water crisis may be solved by utilizing reclaimed water. Three reclaimed water sources have restored the lower sections of the Licun River, forming a landscaped river. In this paper, the river's water quality was monitored for a year, and the ecological concerns were analyzed using luminescent bacteria, chlorella, and zebrafish. The results indicated that although basic water quality indicators like COD and ammonia fluctuated along the river, the classification of water quality was primarily affected by factors such as flow rate and water depth. Under experimental conditions, the toxic inhibitory effect of river water on luminescent bacteria, chlorella, and zebrafish was related to the treatment process of reclaimed water. It was found that the reclaimed water produced by the MBR, along with the UV disinfection process, showed no detectable toxicity. In contrast, the MBBR process, when combined with coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, ozonation, and chlorination, seemed to be the source of this toxicity. Along the river, the results of water quality assessments and ecological risk assessments were different, indicating that both should be conducted to evaluate rivers replenished with reclaimed water. The objective of the current research was to examine the water quality of the River Ravi and the River Sutlej, with a specific focus on potentially toxic elements (PTEs). Additionally, we sought to monitor the sources of pollution in these rivers by gathering samples from the primary drains that carry industrial and municipal waste into these water bodies. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of PTEs in surface water on groundwater quality by collecting groundwater samples from nearby populated areas. A total of 30 samples were collected from these three sources: rivers (6 samples), drains (9 samples), and groundwater (15 samples). The analysis revealed that the levels of PTEs in the samples from these three resources having a mean value: arsenic (As) 23.5 µg/L, zinc (Zn) 2.35 mg/L, manganese (Mn) 0.51 mg/L, lead (Pb) 6.63 µg/L, and chromium (Cr) 10.9 µg/L, exceeded the recommended values set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, PTEs including (As 84%), (Zn 65%), (Mn 69%), (Pb 53%), (Cr 53%), and (Ni 27%), samples were beyond the recommended values of WHO. The results of the Principal Component Analysis indicated that surface water and groundwater exhibited total variability of 83.87% and 85.97%, respectively. This indicates that the aquifers in the study area have been contaminated due to both natural geogenic factors and anthropogenic sources. These sources include the discharge of industrial effluents, wastewater from municipal sources, mining activities, agricultural practices, weathering of rocks, and interactions between rocks and water. Spatial distribution maps clearly illustrated the widespread mobilization of PTEs throughout the study area. Furthermore, a health risk assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse health effects of PTEs through the ingestion of drinking groundwater by both children and adults. Health risk assessment result show the mean carcinogenic values for As, Cr, Pb and Ni in children are calculated to be (1.88E-04), (2.61E-04), (2.16E-02), and (5.74E-05), respectively. Similarly, the mean carcinogenic values for the above mentioned PTEs in adults were recorded to be (2.39E-05), (3.32E-05), (1.19E-03), and (7.29E-06) respectively. The total hazard index values for As, Zn, Cr, Pb, Mn, Cu, and Ni in children were observed to be (9.07E + 00), (9.95E-07), (4.59E-04), (5.75E-04), (4.72E-05), (2.78E-03), and (5.27E-05) respectively. This study aimed to optimize the methods for sampling and analyzing methylmercury (MeHg) concentrated within diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and its application to different water bodies. We explored the elution solution for MeHg, comprised of 1.13 mM thiourea and 0.1M HCl, optimizing its volume to 50 mL. In addition, we found that it is necessary to analyze the entire extraction solution after adjusting its pH, to ensure completion of the ethylation reaction. The DGT samplers were deployed in two distinct aquatic environments (i.e., Okjeong Lake and Nakdong River) for up to 6 weeks, and this study demonstrated to predict the time-weighted average concentration with a diffusion coefficient of 7.65 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 for MeHg in the diffusive gel. To assess the diffusive boundary layer (DBL) effects, the DGT samplers with different agarose diffusive gel thickness were deployed. The mass of MeHg accumulated in the DGT resin at a given time decreased with increasing diffusive gel thickness, because of creating longer diffusion pathways within thicker gels. The labile MeHg concentration estimated by the DGT in Okjeong Lake and Nakdong River are found in the range of 61–111 and 55–105 pg L−1, respectively, which were found to be similar to the grab sampling data. Additionally, this study evaluated depth-dependent MeHg in Okjeong Lake. The vertical profile results showed that the concentration of MeHg at the depth of 2.3 and 15.7 m are about 1.5 and 4.6 times of the DGT installed at 0.3 m of the surface layer, respectively, suggesting potential mercury methylation in deep waters. This paper discusses water in Afghanistan from the late nineteenth century through the early twenty-first century. This broad chronology is periodized using the historical themes of colonialism, nationalism, international developmentalism, and global warfare. Modern hydraulic technology arrived in the domestic architecture of Kabuli state elites beginning in the 1860s and accelerating greatly in the 1890s. The first decades of the twentieth were marked by continuing developments regarding palatial hydrology (pools, fountains, etc.) and new forms of modern hydraulic engineering (piped water, dams and bridges) primarily in and around Kabul involving the Kabul river and its tributaries. The middle decades of the twentieth century involved substantial engagement of rivers throughout country under the various ideological and material regimes of international development sponsored by the US, USSR and a number of other global actors and sanctioned by local political elites who became increasingly dependent on the global system. The decades surrounding the year 2000 have been marked by intense and sustained overt and covert global warfare. The effects of war on the environment of Afghanistan from the perspective of Human Rights, particularly Afghan Peoples' Rights to Water, constitute the final section of the paper. Global industrialization has contributed substantial amounts of chemical pollutants in rivers, resulting in an uninhabitable state and impacting different life forms. Moreover, water macrophytes, such as water hyacinths, are abundantly present in polluted rivers, significantly affecting the overall water biogeochemistry. Bioremediation involves utilizing microbial metabolic machinery and is one of the most viable approaches for removing toxic pollutants. Conventional techniques generate limited information on the indigenous microbial population and their xenobiotic metabolism, failing the bioremediation process. Metagenomics can overcome these limitations by providing in-depth details of microbial taxa and functionality-related information required for successful biostimulation and augmentation. An in-depth summary of the findings related to pollutant metabolizing genes and enzymes in rivers still needs to be collated. The present study details bioremediation genes and enzymes functionally mined from polluted river ecosystems worldwide using a metagenomic approach. Several studies reported a wide variety of pollutant-degrading enzymes involved in the metabolism of dyes, plastics, persistent organic pollutants, and aromatic hydrocarbons. Additionally, few studies also noted a shift in the microbiome of the rivers upon exposure to contaminants, crucially affecting the ecological determinant processes. Furthermore, minimal studies have focused on the role of water-hyacinth–associated microbes in the bioremediation potentials, suggesting the need for the bioprospecting of these lesser-studied microbes. Environmental influences on species' functional traits are important ecological issues to assess biodiversity. Relationships among fish abundance, their functional traits, and environmental conditions across different levels of anthropogenic impacts in a tropical Brazilian river were evaluated. We combined RLQ and fourth-corner methods, utilizing local environmental variables and the Human Footprint Index (HFI) as a human activities indicator. Three HFI levels (High, Intermediate, and Low) and short-term (1993–2009) impact changes at each location were assigned. Fish with internal fertilization and small body sizes were strongly associated with high HFI scores. Grass-dominated riparian areas were common in altered locations, whereas less altered localities exhibited the riparian cover dominated by trees. Highly altered areas showed high HFI, grass-covered riparian zones, and small-sized species with internal fertilization (e.g., Cyprinodontiformes like Poecilia vivipara, Poecilia reticulata, and Phalloceros caudimaculatus). In contrast, less altered areas had tree-lined riparian zones and medium to large-sized species with external fertilization and diverse traits. Underlying deterministic processes shape species distribution, tied to environment and traits. Filtering of traits in the most altered locations may favor small-sized species with internal fertilization. This approach, utilizing HFI and local variables to assess trait–environment relationships of riverine fish, facilitates understanding organisms' responses to environmental constraints. Purpose: Anthropogenic land use change has caused an increase in particulate nutrient loads from catchments draining to the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). The research in GBR catchments has indicated that particulate nutrients are bioavailable to both freshwater and marine phytoplankton, but relative importance of this source of nutrients to the GBR is unknown. We quantified the contribution of this source of bioavailable nitrogen in a dry-tropics grazing and a wet-tropics fertilized mixed land use catchment of the GBR. Materials and methods: The different bioavailable nitrogen pools and associated processes through which dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) is generated from eroded sediment (mass of DIN generated per mass of sediment) were identified. These pools and processes were quantified from a range of representative sediment sources (e.g. surface and subsurface soil and different land uses). We collected 17 sediment source samples in the wet tropics and 41 in the dry tropics. We combined the N pool concentration data with spatial and hydrological fine sediment modelling to estimate the contribution from different sources and processes/pools to the end-of-catchment DIN load. Results and discussion: The modelled load of DIN generated from sediment accounted for all the monitored DIN load in the grazing-dominated catchment but was insignificant in the fertilized mixed land use catchment. Sediment from surface erosion (hillslope erosion) and some soil types contributed disproportionally to the modelled DIN generation. Fast solubilisation of DIN was the main process in the catchments studied. The importance of mineralisation of the organic fraction increased with the time the sediment was in suspension. Conclusion: Particulate nutrients in sediment are a significant source of bioavailable nitrogen in eroding grazing catchments. Fluvial ecosystems are essential for life on Earth. Despite this recognition and the growing implementation of restoration programs, measures aimed at halting riverine biodiversity's decline have had limited success, so far. The implementation of protected areas has been the cornerstone of terrestrial and marine conservation. However, this strategy has only been seldomly applied to the protection of fluvial ecosystems and there is still no clear evidence of its effectiveness. We reviewed existing literature in scientific journals and reports from conservation agencies and analysed existing protection policies dedicated to rivers as well as several case studies throughout the world. Our main aim is to understand the potential advantages and drawbacks of dedicated fluvial protected areas, comparing to terrestrial protected areas and even to the total absence of protection. We also delved in the process of implementing fluvial protected areas, namely in what concerns relevant spatial scales, conservation priorities, stakeholders' involvement and mitigation measures to potential threats. In total 173 references were retained after a comprehensive search on Google Scholar, SpringerLink, Scopus and ResearchGate. These studies revealed that, despite contradictory results, terrestrial protected areas provide some degree of protection to riverine ecosystems contained within their borders, namely through increased abundances and species richness of some specific groups. Comparatively, however, dedicated fluvial protected areas, designed to accommodate the uniqueness of these systems, hold a much higher potential. Yet, data regarding its effectiveness is still scarce, mainly due to the lack of general guidelines and resources to evaluate performance following establishment, which prevents stronger conclusions. As an emerging contaminant, microplastics (MPs) have caused global environmental pollution and become the focus of current research. This research presents a comprehensive literature review on the occurrence and distribution characteristics of MPs in surface water within China. The findings demonstrate that stainless steel barrels currently serve as the predominant tool for water sampling, whereas Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer and Raman spectrometer are extensively employed for the detection of MPs. The mean abundance of MPs in rivers ranges from 0.57 to 930.00 n/L, while in lakes and reservoirs, it varies between 1.30 and 27.50 n/L. The size of MPs in surface waters is mainly less than 1 mm, with the transparent or white fibrous forms being the most frequently observed morphology, and polypropylene and polyethylene emerge as the primary polymer types. Additionally, the investigation of MPs in lakes and reservoirs in Northeast China and South China remains unexplored. Currently, an increasing number of Chinese cities are opting for surface water as their water source, so more studies should focus on enhancing the accumulation of research data on MPs in surface water to provide substantial support for the development of pollution control measures in the future. Analysis of available monitoring data sets on concentrations of accidentally derived dissolved radiocesium in water bodies is indicative of two major physicochemical mechanisms responsible for their seasonal variations in water bodies in the course of the year: temperature dependence of radiocesium desorption from suspended material and ion-exchange remobilization of radiocesium by ammonium cations formed during decomposition of organic matter in anoxic conditions. An equation describing seasonal variations in concentration of dissolved radiocesium in water bodies has been derived accounting for two factors: water temperature, and combined concentration of key competing cations. For the first time data on parasite diversity of Syngnathidae fishes inhabiting the Black and the Sea of Azov, the rivers flowing into these seas and their estuaries accumulated in more than 30 articles and books during almost one century of investigations were summarized. A high level of parasitic organisms' richness is registered to date: 64 species from 45 genera, 35 families, 14 classes, 10 phyla have been recorded here from eighth species of Syngnathidae fish hosts: Syngnathus abaster Risso, 1827; S. acus L., 1758; S. schmidti Popov, 1927; S. tenuirostis Rathke, 1837; S. typhle L., 1758; S. variegatus Pallas, 1814; Nerophis ophidion (L., 1758); Hippocampus hippocampus (L., 1758). Host-parasite and parasite-host lists are provided, the results for Kinetoplastida, Sporozoa, Microsporidia, Myxozoa, Ciliophora, Platyhelminthes (Monogenea, Trematoda, Cestoda), Nematoda, Acanthocephala, Annelida, and parasitic Arthropoda are presented. Platyhelminthes and Ciliophora (19 and 18 species, respectively) turned out to be the most species-rich taxa of Syngnathidae parasites, while Trematoda was the richest (15 species) class among flatworms. The largest number of parasite species is known from three fish hosts: S. abaster parasite fauna comprises 54 species of 10 phyla (84% of total parasite fauna of this fish family in the region), S. typhle—27 parasite species belonging to six phyla (38%, respectively) and relatively pure parasites fauna in H. guttulatus, 14 species of six phyla (22%). Over time, the average global temperature has varied greatly, mainly due to natural phenomena. However, several anthropic activities have caused significant changes in the Earth's atmosphere, so that various greenhouse gases, especially CO2, have increased their atmospheric concentration and, consequently, produced an increase in the planet's temperature. These climatic changes, particularly global warming, can affect organisms in continental aquatic environments, including primary producers (e.g., macrophytes). Using photosynthetic parameters calculated from chlorophyll a fluorescence and measurements of chlorophyll a content, we assessed the potential effects of temperature increases predicted by two future scenarios from the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 (RCP 4.5) and Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP 8.5), on the photosynthetic responses of five aquatic macrophytes from tropical lotic ecosystems. Our results showed a trend of a reduction in the φPSII values associated, as a rule, with an increase in the heat dissipation values in the reaction centers of photosystem II, that is, parameter E. Such reductions in the φPSII associated with increases in parameter E suggest that most likely, even the less severe RCP scenario, RCP 4.5, is already sufficient to negatively and significantly affect the photosynthetic responses of most aquatic macrophytes tested in this experimental study. Considering that macrophytes, alongside macroalgae and periphyton, form the basis of autotrophic food webs in tropical lotic ecosystems, our results suggest that there is a real possibility that the negative effects produced by global warming on these primary producers are propagated, as a "cascade effect", indirectly affecting higher trophic levels as well. In this study, six rivers exposed to important agricultural and industrial discharges were selected in Samsun, the region of Mid-Black Sea region. During the wet (February) and dry (July) seasons of 2022, river water samples were taken and analyzes were made using 36 water quality parameters, 19 of which were PTE. In the evaluation of the quality of these surface waters, water quality index, heavy metal indices, human health evaluation indices and multivariate statistical analyzes were used. In some results, Fe (260.9–804.9 µg/L) and Al (392.9–1411.5 µg/L) metals exceeded the limit standard values, while other PTEs remained within the limit standard values. In addition, seasonal significant differences were found in TOC, TP, NO3–N, NH4–N, TSS, phenol, hardness and temperature parameters (p < 0.05). On the other hand, three main components were identified explaining 91.21% of the water quality change with PCA, indicating that the sources of pollution were anthropogenic. As for the WQI values, they were determined to be higher in the wet seasons (29.12–67.26) than in the dry seasons (9.47–31.66). The Kızılırmak River has been exposed to the most intense pollution among the six rivers. In this river, the WQI, HPI and HEI values in the rainy season were 67.26, 21.21 and 18.84, respectively. It was determined that Cd and Pb values did not have any side effects except for the As value in the river where CR is low in adults. However, it was found that the As value (1.3E-04) in the Kızılırmak River is higher than the CR predicted standard limit (> 1.0E-04). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimating discharges Q(x, t) from altimetric measurements only, for ungauged rivers (in particular, those with unknown bathymetry b(x)), is an ill-posed inverse problem. We develop here an algorithm to estimate Q(x, t) without prior flow information other than global open datasets. Additionally, the ill-posedness feature of this inverse problem is re-investigated. Inversions based on a Variational Data Assimilation (VDA) approach enable accurate estimation of spatio-temporal variations of the discharge, but with a bias scaling the overall estimate. This key issue, which was already highlighted in our previous studies, is partly solved by considering additional hydrological information (the drainage area, A (k m 2) ) combined with a Machine Learning (ML) technique. Purely data-driven estimations obtained from an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) provide a reasonably good estimation at a large scale ( ≈ 10 3 m). This first estimation is then employed to define the first guess of an iterative VDA algorithm. The latter relies on the Saint-Venant flow model and aims to compute the complete unknowns (discharge Q(x, t), bathymetry b(x), friction coefficient K(x, t)) at a fine scale (approximately 10 2 m). The resulting complete inversion algorithm is called the H2iVDI algorithm for "Hybrid Hierarchical Variational Discharge Inference". Numerical experiments have been analyzed for 29 heterogeneous worldwide river portions. The obtained estimations present an overall bias (less than 30% for rivers with similar characteristics than those used for calibration) smaller than previous results, with accurate spatio-temporal variations of the flow. After a learning period of the observed rivers (e.g. one year), the algorithm provides two complementary estimators: a dynamic flow model enabling estimations at a fine scale and spatio-temporal extrapolations, and a low complexity estimator (based on a dedicated algebraic low Froude flow model). This last estimator provides reasonably accurate estimations (less than 30% for considered rivers) at a large scale from newly acquired WS measurements in real-time, therefore making it a potentially operational algorithm. In recent decades, water availability, water use, water sharing and freshwater supply for basic human and economic needs have become central scientific and humanitarian issues. With increasing water scarcity in many regions and increasing frequency of extreme flooding in other regions, there is a need to improve predictive capacity, to collect a large amount of information on key hydrological variables such as flows or water stocks in lakes and floodplains and to best combine these data with hydrological and hydrodynamic models. Most of the world's water demand relies on continental surface waters (rivers, lakes, wetlands and artificial reservoirs) while less on underground aquifers and seawater desalination. However, ground-based hydrological survey networks have steadily and drastically decreased worldwide over the last decades. In this context, current remote sensing techniques have been widely used by several countries for water resource monitoring purposes. In this paper, we present such remote sensing techniques, in particular satellite altimetry and imagery, and discuss how they became essential for the study of the water cycle and hydrological phenomena on a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Large lakes, rivers and wetlands play a major role in the global water cycle and are also markers, integrators and actors of climate change at work on Earth. We show several examples chosen from the literature that perfectly highlight both current scientific and societal issues, as well as the crucial role of space techniques to monitor terrestrial surface waters. Complementarity is crucial when prioritizing sites for biodiversity conservation. Networks of conservation corridors (CCs) can contribute to regional representativeness by complementing biodiversity features included in existing protected areas (PAs). We ask whether criteria important for CC management and design are effective at prioritizing complementary sites, and how the consideration of species represented in PAs influence criteria performance. We focused on species turnover of generalist and specialist dragonflies across 88 riverine sites. Criteria assessed included site-level estimates of dragonfly species richness, estimates of local habitat quality and corridor width. Measures of local habitat quality were based on either dragonfly indicator species or proportion of alien vegetation. Results showed that CCs complement dragonfly diversity in PAs by contributing unrepresented generalist species. Of the criteria, corridor width was the most efficient at prioritizing complementary sites, while prioritization based on dragonfly indicator species or species richness underperformed. When aiming to prioritize CC sites that also complement sites situated in established PAs, wide corridors with low levels of alien vegetation should be favoured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Little were certain about how wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) affected the Japanese riverine microplastic contamination. This study explored the influences of WWTPs on microplastic pollution, assessed ecological risks, and looked at the sources-to-sinks phenomenon (WWTPs-to-rivers-to-marine) in riverine settings in Japan's Yamaguchi prefecture. Fifty surface water samples from the five selected rivers (Koya, Saba, Shimaji, and Fushino, Nishiki) and 11 effluent samples from WWTPs in the rivers' catchment were examined. Microplastics were analyzed using filtration, wet-peroxidation, density-separation, and attenuated reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. Results suggested that the less populated and rural river (Nishiki) was less contaminated compared to the WWTPs and urban areas affected rivers (Koya, Saba, Shimaji, and Fushino). The WWTPs increased microplastic abundance twofold in the downstream regions compared to upstream stations. Microplastic characterization showed that the smaller microplastics < 500 µm, fiber-shaped, transparent, blue, and green color particles were major. Polymer identification demonstrated that the polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate were prevalent both for the rivers and WWTP effluents. There was a significant emission of microplastics from WWTPs to rivers (4.671 billion pieces per day; 71.8 kg per day) and rivers to Seto Inland Sea (0.13/billion pieces per day/km2; 7.1 kg per day). The per capita MP emissions to the rivers via WWTPs ranged from 0.02 to 6.49 g per day, which was approximately 2% of per capita single-use plastic wastes in Japan. An assessment of ecological risks showed that the WWTPs posed high ecological risks to rivers, and built up the pollution hotspots to their downstream areas by releasing higher number of microplastics and highly toxic polymers. Overall, the WWTPs influenced the rivers through both abundances and characteristics (shapes-size-color-polymers), increased the complexity of microplastic compositions as well as elevated ecological risks in the rivers. Small streams dominate the hydrological network within Europe. In many regions, these waterbodies drain large areas of agricultural land and are vulnerable to pressures linked to livestock management, which can include direct livestock access. This study investigated the impacts of cattle access to watercourses on the contamination of streambed sediment with Escherichia coli (E. coli) in five agricultural catchments. Sediments were collected at cattle access sites and at areas upstream with no cattle access, in two time points in the livestock management cycle (mid-grazing and post-grazing season). Relatively high E. coli concentrations of 103 to 104 CFU g dry wt−1 were found at sites with no access in mid-grazing season. However, concentrations were significantly higher at sites with cattle access. E. coli was present, but in generally lower concentrations, in the post-grazing season. Additionally, the study found a significant negative relationship between the quality of the general riparian environment and E. coli bed sediment concentrations at the cattle access sites in the mid-grazing season, and a significant positive relationship between E. coli concentrations and estimated cattle density locally in post-grazing season. India at present is one of the leading countries in antimicrobial drug production and use, leading to increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and public health problems. Attention has mainly been focused on the human and food animals' contribution to AMR neglecting the potential contribution of the perceptibly degraded aquatic environment in India. The paper reviews the available published literature in India on the prevalence of antimicrobial residues and their dissemination pathways in wastewater of pharmaceutical industries, sewage treatment plants, hospitals, riverine, community pond water, and groundwater. The prevalence of antimicrobial residue concentration, pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB), their drug resistance levels, and their specific antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs) occurring in various water matrices of India have been comprehensively depicted from existing literature. The concentration of some widely used antimicrobials recorded from the sewage treatment plants and hospital wastewater and rivers in India has been compared with other countries. The ecotoxicological risk posed by these antimicrobials in the various water matrices in India indicated high hazard quotient (HQ) values for pharmaceutical effluents, hospital effluents, and river water. The degraded aquatic environment exhibited the selection of a wide array of co-existent resistant genes for antibiotics and metals. The review revealed improper use of antibiotics and inadequate wastewater treatment as major drivers of AMR contaminating water bodies in India and suggestion for containing the challenges posed by AMR in India has been proposed. Sea level rise is affecting reaches of coastal rivers by increasing water levels and propagating tides inland. The transition of river systems into tidal estuaries has been neglected in hydrogeomorphic studies. A better understanding of transitioning reaches is critical to understanding ecosystem dynamics, services, and developing predictive capabilities of change as sea levels rise. We hypothesized that river-floodplain morphology changes from fluvial to tidally dominated regimes, changing suspended sediment concentrations (SSC), sediment deposition, vegetation, and landforms. We tested this using lidar, satellite imagery, and SSC and conductivity measurements along two Coastal Plain rivers of Virginia, USA. Geomorphic channel and floodplain parameters indicated breakpoints into three regimes: fluvial, mixed, and tidal. Maximum channel width occurred with minimum floodplain widths in the mixed regime. Tidal freshwater forests had considerable elevational overlap with marshes but typically were 9.5 cm higher. SSC increased with shoal width through the mixed reaches, with maxima in the tidal reaches where estuarine influences increased. Channel erosion rates indicated that modern sediment loads and hydrology produce slow changes to channel planform and geomorphology that may not be apparent from visual comparisons. Our findings indicated that tidal floodplain forests and marshes in the mixed and tidal reaches are expected to convert to marshes or open water as sea levels rise as limited gradual sloping area exists between the active floodplain and terraces. Tidal floodplain surfaces along mixed hydrology reaches, inland of the estuarine turbidity maximum may be expected to convert to open water while inland sloping floodplains could support tidal wetland migration. Nutrient uptake, storage, and release are critical ecosystem functions that affect carbon processing and food web dynamics. Yet, mechanisms controlling when ecosystems are net sinks or sources of nutrients are uncertain. Specifically, how nutrient supply ratios alter rates and ratios of net nutrient uptake and release is unclear. To assess whether net nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake and release are linked to supply N:P, we experimentally enriched five forest streams at different N:P (target molar N:P range 2:1–128:1) for 2 years. We quantified net nutrient exchange (NNE) as the difference between the expected N and P fluxes assuming conservative transport (background concentrations plus experimental inputs) and the observed nutrient fluxes at the downstream end of each experimental stream reach. Supply N:P did not affect the magnitude of NNE for either N or P, but the likelihood of net N and P uptake was greatest at intermediate N:P supply (N:P = 99:1 and 55:1, respectively). Streams appeared to be highly flexible in their N:P uptake and release; the slopes between NNEN and NNEP within each stream increased with supply N:P. Furthermore, slopes comparing supply N:P to uptake and release N:P were near one (0.98 ± 0.06 SE and 0.82 ± 0.13 SE, respectively), indicating a high degree of flexibility. Overall, we found greater stoichiometric flexibility than has been shown in short-term nutrient-addition experiments. We suggest that this flexibility results from changes in nutrient recycling within biofilms or changes in community structure, which may take longer to manifest than the duration of shorter-term experiments. Gravity and magnetic field datasets coupled with Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation data over north-western Nigeria were interpreted to delineate subsurface and surface structures, and determine their influence on the drainage system within Sokoto Basin and its surrounding environment. The Improved Logistic Filter and Euler Deconvolution techniques were applied to the residual fields of the gravity and magnetic data to delineate lineaments and their depths of occurrence, respectively. The lineaments mapped from gravity and magnetic data revealed a major N–S and NE–SW, and W–E trend respectively and in several cases were aligned with surface lineaments from the SRTM digital elevation data. The results revealed that the drainage channel of Rivers Niger, Sokoto, Rima, Zamfara, Ka, Kasanu, Gagere, Kuromoni, Malendo and Kontagora are closely aligned with several lineaments emanating from the underlying basement. The 2-D forward models confirmed the presence of these lineaments and delineated intrusives within Sokoto Basin. Vegetation condition has declined along many regulated river systems globally due to alteration of flow regimes via flow regulation. Understanding how plants respond to inundation is critical for managing regulated river flows to improve riparian vegetation condition. We experimentally tested the effects of inundation duration on the survival and growth of six tufted grass species commonly found in riparian zones in south-eastern Australia. We conducted three nursery-based experiments in late winter/early spring, corresponding with natural temperate flow peaks and managed flows, with inundation treatments on: (1) established plants, up to 35 days inundation; (2) seedlings, up to 25 days inundation; and (3) established plants, up to 53 days inundation including additional shaded treatments. Plant survival, height and biomass growth, and onset of flowering were recorded for established plants, and, for seedlings, survival only. Plant height and biomass growth declined with longer inundation duration across all species, although surprisingly few established plants died. Unexpectedly, grass seedlings were generally tolerant of inundation also, although there was some evidence of increased mortality for the longest treatment (25 days inundation). Shading did not result in increased mortality or reduced height growth of inundated plants. Inundation effects on the onset of flowering were modest and varied between species ranging from earlier to delayed onset. Our results suggest that tufted grasses are tolerant of cool-season inundation. Given that mortality of these species has been observed in the field and experimentally under shorter inundation periods in warmer conditions (late spring and summer), we suggest that seasonal timing of inundation is critical in determining plant responses to inundation. The river–lake transitional zone provides a unique environment for the biological community and can reduce pollution inputs in lake ecosystems from their catchments. To explore environmental conditions with high purification potential in Lake Taihu and indicator species, we examined the river-to-lake changes in water and sediment quality and benthic invertebrate communities in the transitional zone of four regions. The spatial variations in the environment and invertebrate community observed in this study followed the previously reported patterns in Taihu; the northern and western regions were characterized by higher nutrient concentrations in water, higher heavy metal concentrations in sediment, and higher total invertebrate density and biomass dominated by pollution-tolerant oligochaetes and chironomids. Although nutrient concentrations were low and transparency was high in the eastern region, the taxon richness was the lowest there, which disagreed with the previous findings and might be due to a poor cover of macrophytes in this study. The river-to-lake change was large in the southern region for water quality and the invertebrate community. Water circulation induced by strong wind-wave actions in the lake sites of the southern region is assumed to have promoted photosynthetic and nutrient uptake activities and favored invertebrates that require well-aerated conditions such as polychaetes and burrowing crustaceans. Invertebrates usually adapted to brackish and saline environments are suggested to be indicators of a well-circulated environment with active biogeochemical processes and a less eutrophic state in Taihu, and wind-wave actions are key to maintaining such a community and natural purifying processes. Water is polluted via various means; among these, heavy metal (HM) contamination is of great concern because of the involvement of metal toxicity and its effect on aquatic environment. The significance and novelty of this study is that it focuses on assessment of HMs in the surface water of Indian rivers only from 1991 to 2021. For this, multivariate studies were used to find multiple sources of HMs. The average concentrations of Fe, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cd, Mn, Hg, Co, and As in surface water of rivers were found to far exceed the permitted limits established by both World Health Organisation and Bureau of Indian Standards. The HM indices like HM pollution, degree of contamination, evaluation index, water pollution, and toxicity load data all indicated that the rivers under investigation are heavily polluted by HMs. In this study, health risk assessment indicated non-carcinogenic effects of Fe, Cr, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn, Hg, Co, and As in children and those of Fe, Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg, Co, and As in adults. Values investigated for Cancer index were higher for Cr, Pb, Ni, Cd, and As indicating a high risk of cancer development in adults and children via the ingestion pathway than the cutaneous pathway. Moreover, children are more prone to be exposed to both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects of HMs than adults. To reduce human dangers, remediation approaches, such as environment-friendly, cost-effective adsorbents, phytoremediation and bio-remediation, as well as tools like bio-sensors, should be included in river management plans. River water was sampled at 105 locations in the Ottawa River watershed and analysed for microplastics. Sampling techniques were standardised and replicated at each sample location to give an indication of the spatial extent of microplastics at the watershed scale. Microplastic concentrations remained largely uniform, with no clear accumulation of microplastics towards the lower reaches of the watershed. An ANCOVA analysis determined that the only significant relationships to microplastic concentration were distance downstream on the main channel and tributaries and an increase of microplastic concentrations at boat launch locations. However, these relationships were not strong (R2 value of 0.15) and suggest a more complex interaction of microplastics in large watersheds. It is recommended that further research on microplastic pollution in rivers needs to also focus on temporal factors in addition to considering sinks as an important element in the distribution of microplastics at the watershed scale. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export from land to ocean via rivers is a significant term in the global C cycle, and has been modified in many areas by human activity. DOC exports from large global rivers are fairly well quantified, but those from smaller river systems, including those draining oceanic regions, are generally under-represented in global syntheses. Given that these regions typically have high runoff and high peat cover, they may exert a disproportionate influence on the global land–ocean DOC export. Here we describe a comprehensive new assessment of the annual riverine DOC export to estuaries across the island of Great Britain (GB), which spans the latitude range 50–60° N with strong spatial gradients of topography, soils, rainfall, land use and population density. DOC yields (export per unit area) were positively related to and best predicted by rainfall, peat extent and forest cover, but relatively insensitive to population density or agricultural development. Based on an empirical relationship with land use and rainfall we estimate that the DOC export from the GB land area to the freshwater-seawater interface was 1.15 Tg C year−1 in 2017. The average yield for GB rivers is 5.04 g C m−2 year−1, higher than most of the world's major rivers, including those of the humid tropics and Arctic, supporting the conclusion that under-representation of smaller river systems draining peat-rich areas could lead to under-estimation of the global land–ocean DOC export. The main anthropogenic factor influencing the spatial distribution of GB DOC exports appears to be upland conifer plantation forestry, which is estimated to have raised the overall DOC export by 0.168 Tg C year−1. This is equivalent to 15% of the estimated current rate of net CO2 uptake by British forests. With the UK and many other countries seeking to expand plantation forest cover for climate change mitigation, this 'leak in the ecosystem' should be incorporated in future assessments of the CO2 sequestration potential of forest planting strategies. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a fundamental role in nutrient cycling dynamics in riverine systems. Recent research has confirmed that the concentration of riverine DOM is not the only factor regulating its functional significance; the need to define the chemical composition of DOM is a priority. Past studies of riverine DOM rested on bulk quantification, however technological advancements have meant there has been a shift towards analytical methods which allow the characterisation of DOM either at compound class or more recently molecular level. However, it is important to consider that all analytical methods only consider a defined analytical window. Thus, herein, we explore the use of a hierarchy of methods which can be used in combination for the investigation of a wide range of DOM chemistries. By using these methods to investigate the DOM composition of a range of streams draining catchments of contrasting environmental character, a wide range of compounds were identified across a range of polarities and molecular weight, thereby extending the analytical window. Through the elucidation of the DOM character in stream samples, information can be collected about likely the sources of DOM. The identification of individual key compounds within the DOM pool is a key step in the design of robust and informative bioassay experiments, used to understand in-stream ecosystem responses. The San Francisco Estuary, in central California, has several long-running monitoring programs that have been used to reveal human-induced changes throughout the estuary in the last century. Here, we pair synoptic records of particulate organic matter (POM) composition from 1990–1996 and 2007–2016 with more robust long-term monitoring program records of total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations generally starting in the mid-1970s to better understand how POM and TSS sources and transport have shifted. Specifically, POM C:N ratios and stable isotope values were used as indicators of POM source and to separate the bulk POC pool into detrital and phytoplankton components. We found that TSS and POC sources have shifted significantly across the estuary in time and space from declines in terrestrial inputs. Landward freshwater and brackish water sites, in the Delta and near Suisun Bay, witnessed long-term declines in TSS (32 to 52%), while seaward sites, near San Pablo Bay, recorded recent increases in TSS (16 to 121%) that began to trend downwards at the end of the record considered. Bulk POM C:N ratios shifted coeval with the TSS concentration changes at nearly all sites, with mean declines of 12 to 27% between 1990–1996 and 2007–2016. The widespread declines in bulk POM C:N ratios and inferred changes in POC concentrations from TSS trends, along with the substantial declines in upstream TSS supply through time (56%), suggest measurable reductions in terrestrial inputs to the system. Changes in terrestrial TSS and POM inputs have implications for biotic (e.g., food web dynamics) and abiotic organic matter cycling (e.g., burial, export) along the estuarine continuum. This work demonstrates how human-generated environmental changes can propagate spatially and temporally through a large river-estuary system. More broadly, we show how underutilized monitoring program datasets can be paired with existing (and often imperfect) synoptic records to generate new system insight in lieu of new data collection. Water resource management refers to the process of planning, developing, and managing water resources across uses. Understanding how the Romans approached the management of water resources is crucial to our understanding of the functioning of Roman society, not least from the point of view of the agricultural economy, urban development, trade, industry, and leisure. Just as modern societies, the Romans faced numerous challenges concerning the effective and continuous distribution of water, the management of waterways for transport purposes, and, when disputes arose, how best to balance competing interests. Though much has already been written individually on these topics, there remains considerable scope for research into the Roman approach to these issues from a holistic perspective. This volume therefore introduces a series of studies from a cross-disciplinary point of view, that includes contributions by archaeologists, geomorphologists, historians, and jurists, with a view to understanding how Roman technical, social, and legal solutions worked together to produce systemic results. The population in the Black Sea region is expected to decline in the future. However, a better understanding of how river pollution is affected by declining trends in population and increasing trends in economic developments and urbanization is needed. This study aims to quantify future trends in point-source emissions of nutrients, microplastics, Cryptosporidium, and triclosan to 107 rivers draining into the Black Sea. We apply a multi-pollutant model for 2010, 2050, and 2100. In the future, over half of the rivers will be more polluted than in 2010. The population in 74 sub-basins may drop by over 25% in our economic scenario with poor wastewater treatment. Over two-thirds of the people will live in cities and the economy may grow 9-fold in the region. Advanced wastewater treatment could minimize trade-offs between economy and pollution: our Sustainability scenario projects a 68–98% decline in point-source pollution by 2100. Mass mortality of Unionidae from the genera Middendorffinaia, Buldowskia, and Sinanodonta was observed in the plain rivers of the south of Primorsky Krai (south of the Russian Far East) in the abnormally hot and low-water summer–autumn season of 2021. Nodularia douglasiae (Griffith et Pidgeon, 1833) was the most resistant and thus least affected species, the species from the genera Sinanodonta and Middendorffinaia, the least resistant and the most affected. Transformation of natural vegetation to cultivated fields has resulted in marked increases in water quality degradation and nutrient loading of rivers globally. In many developing countries, monitoring and evaluating the impacts of agriculture on water quality are limited by financial constraints and focus is given to large water bodies. This paper presents and discusses the results of a year-long monitoring of a typical river system in an agricultural setting, namely the Bot River, Western Cape, South Africa. Results show seasonal increases in N concentrations and SRP driven by surrounding agricultural activities. Water chemistry and changes to nutrient loads were found to be site specific, which demonstrates that monitoring programmes focussing on one or two sites are not representative of the entire catchment. Monitoring and reporting of small river systems are thus un(der)-represented in large databases such as the UN Global Environment Monitoring System for Freshwater (GEMS/Water) programme. The results highlight the importance of selecting appropriate and representative monitoring sites for these rivers when budgetary constraints limit the number of points that can be monitored sustainably. The findings should also be applicable to similar catchments in the Western Cape and beyond as they demonstrate the magnitude of seasonal nutrient fluxes in the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most urgent problems on which current studies of Arctic and subarctic territories are focused is how permafrost thawing can affect organic carbon fluxes and how these fluxes can influence the geochemistry of the surface and ground water. In addition to disturbing the carbon balance, permafrost thawing provokes the release of a significant amount of other chemical elements entering natural waters. The paper presents original data obtained by studying surface water in 2020 in the Yamalo–Nenets Autonomous District, which is situated in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Permafrost is widespread in the study area, as also are facilities of the oil and gas industry. This predetermines the importance of research on the chemical composition of natural water, its formation, and ecological–geochemical status, which are critical aspects for assessing the anthropogenic load and predicting the influence of climate changes on the biogeochemical cycles of chemical elements. In the course of our fieldwork, 47 surface water samples were taken in the basins of the Taz, Pur, Ob, and Nadym rivers: 23 samples from rivers and streams and 24 samples from lakes and thaw depressions. The sampling sites were chosen to as comprehensively as possible cover the lake–stream–river system in the catchment areas of major rivers of the Yamalo–Nenets Autonomous District. The chemical composition of the water samples was analyzed at a certified laboratory using methods conventionally applied in solving such problems. The data were processed using statistical methods, including the principal component analysis (PCA). Data analysis demonstrates that surface water in the study area is ultrafresh, with neutral or weakly alkaline pH values. Hydrocarbonate, calcium, and magnesium ions dominate in the ionic composition of the water, and ammonium contents are high in the waters of the lakes and thaw depressions. In addition, the ammonium concentration strongly positively correlates with the content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the values of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and permanganate index (PI). It was found out that the streams (springs and rivers) differ from the lakes and the water of the thaw depressions in higher concentrations of main ions that are brought to the water mainly by natural factors (these are , Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+) and higher total dissolved solids (TDS) and pH values. In contrast, the water of the thaw depressions is characterized by the highest concentrations of DOC and the values of other parameters related to organic matter (N– , COD, and PI). It was shown that the main factors that control the chemical composition of the water are its interaction with organic matter from organic (peat) soil horizons and the mineral components of the underlying rocks and soils. The former factor most significantly impacts the water of the thaw depressions, and the latter one affects mainly the chemical composition of the rivers and streams. Management measures targeting riverine macrophyte species often address dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. With recent reductions of nutrient pollution, effects of other variables have become more apparent. This study aims to shed light on the hierarchy of variables determining riverine macrophyte distribution, covering both surface water nutrients and a range of other variables, in a Central European landscape. We used a dataset of 1,371 monitoring samples to predict the presence and absence of 30 common macrophyte species with multiple random forest models. Besides surface water chemical variables (P-PO4, TN and pH), five reach hydromorphological variables (substrate, flow velocity, shading, width and depth) and a variable related to river size (distance from the river source) were use as predictors. The most important variables for the prediction of the species' presence and absence were substrate, distance from the river source and flow velocity. Additionally, P-PO4 and shade were also important, whilst TN, pH, width and depth played only a minor role. River hydromorphology was more important than surface water chemistry for the occurrences of individual riverine macrophyte species, in particular under less extreme eutrophic conditions. Species occurrences were related to multiple interacting variables, amongst which hydromorphology often prevailed. Presence/absence of species and composition of assemblages cannot be attributed to surface water nutrients alone, even when considering river typologies. Therefore, the results support the conjecture that a broader approach considering a range of stressors is necessary to design restoration measures for management and enhancement of macrophyte diversity. Different sources and fates control riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition in catchments of contrasting land use and climate. However, assessing the changes in DOM composition together with nutrient forms along rivers exposed to these gradients remains rare. Here we quantified the spatial and temporal patterns in DOM components and nutrient forms along the mainstem of a 5th order river through sequential forested, urban, and agricultural reaches during low flow moments in summer and winter, and two contrasting springs, one with a historically rare flooding event. There were widespread abrupt shifts in the composition of DOM in low flow seasons that coincided with changes in land use whose sources could be inferred by endmember samples and nutrient changes. DOM pools considered bio- (microbial-like) and photo-labile (Peak C), along with reactive nutrient forms (ammonium, dissolved phosphorus) tended to accumulate during the winter compared to summer. This implied higher processing during summer as microbial-humic-like DOM and nitrate dominated. DOM composition remained relatively stable under typical spring high flow conditions with reduced retention time and processing, but major shifts were observed during an extreme flood year, pointing to unusual loadings of highly labile DOM. Overall, we found that despite relatively small changes in the quantity of DOM along the axis of flow in this north temperate river, there were major spatial and temporal shifts in its composition, associated with different nutrient forms. The ecology and distribution of caddisflies is an important topic with regard to the general biodiversity of insects and also the ecological quality of freshwaters. Our recent rediscovery of Chimarra marginata (Linnaeus) in the Czech Republic took place after more than 80 years and is important from a biomonitoring point of view. We present new data from the Ohře River in western Bohemia and give a review of the historical occurrence of this species in the territory of former Czechoslovakia. Ecological preferences are discussed as well as the potential value of the species for bioindication. This paper is based on a comparison of the carbon parameters at the western and eastern borders of the tropical Atlantic using data collected from 55 cruises. Oceanic and coastal data, mainly total alkalinity (TA), total dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), sea surface salinity (SSS) and sea surface temperature (SST), were compiled from different sources. These data were subdivided into three subsets: oceanic data, coastal data and adjacent to the Brazilian (western) and African coastal areas (eastern) data. Significant differences between the TA data (2099.4 ± 286.4 µmol kg−1) at the western and eastern edges (2198 ± 141.9 µmol kg−1) were observed. Differences in the CT values between the western edge (1779.6 ± 236.4 µmol kg−1) and eastern edge (1892.2 ± 94.2 µmol kg−1) were also noted. This pattern was due to the different variabilities in the carbon parameters between the eastern and western border coastal areas and to the biogeochemistry that drives these parameters. In the western coastal area, the physical features of the continental carbon and oceanic waters mixing with the freshwater that flows from the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers to the South American coast are different than the physical features of the water that flows from the Congo, Volta and Niger Rivers in the eastern region. Applying the TA empirical relationship to TA with values of SSS < 35 in the western and eastern regions leads to a higher root mean square error (rmse) in the eastern and western regions. Therefore, most of the existing TA empirical relationships are most useful at the regional scale due to the difference in the water properties of each region. The relationships of TA and CT determined in the western and eastern regions do not reproduce in situ data well, especially at the adjacent edges. This difference is explained by the difference between the African and Brazilian coasts in terms of their carbon parameter characteristics and processes responsible for their variation. Based on the mixing model, it has been shown that the primary productivity in the eastern region is higher than that in the western region. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) impacts the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. DOM absorbs light in the UV and visible (UV–Vis) wavelengths, thus impacting light attenuation. Because absorption by DOM depends on its composition, UV–Vis absorbance is used to constrain DOM composition, source, and amount. Ferric iron, Fe(III), also absorbs in the UV–Vis; when Fe(III) is present, DOM-attributed absorbance is overestimated. Here, we explore how differing behavior of DOM and Fe(III) at the catchment scale impacts UV–Vis absorbance and evaluate how system-specific variability impacts the effectiveness of existing Fe(III) correction factors in a temperate watershed. We sampled five sites in the Connecticut River mainstem bi-weekly for ~ 1.5 years, and seven sites in the Connecticut River watershed once during the summer 2019. We utilized size fractionation to isolate the impact of DOM and Fe(III) on absorbance and show that variable contributions of Fe(III) to absorbance at 254 nm (a254) and 412 nm (a412) by size fraction complicates correction for Fe(III). We demonstrate that the overestimation of DOM-attributed absorbance by Fe(III) is correlated to the Fe(III):dissolved organic carbon concentration ratio; thus, overestimation can be high even when Fe(III) is low. a254 overestimation is highly variable even within a single system, but can be as high as 53%. Finally, we illustrate that UV-Vis overestimation might impart bias to seasonal, discharge, and land-use trends in DOM quality. Water was always on the minds of medieval travelers and for crusaders it became a critical part of the military pilgrimage. It is considered as a source of life and a means of movement through rivers and seas but in the case of the Albigensian Crusade, water took on a new meaning. Battles along river fronts and the clandestine boat smuggling of heretics were actions by a heretical Cathar community that confronted orthodox religion. Yet, the symbolic consideration of water in a land-locked Occitania permanently and theologically shifted the location of where a crusade could be. The crusading goal of Jerusalem was moved away from the Levant and into southern France, but water also became a significant function of ordinary life during an extraordinary Crusade. Figurative literary devices in the limited and partisan source material emphasized how water was used to propel convicted heretics away in the night but also provide the only form of nourishment for Cathar elite. From the baptismal water to its symbolic representation as the bridge between orthodox Catholic expansion in the Holy Land and French heresy, water was continually referenced by primary sources yet has been overlooked as a major historical theme in Cathar history. The liminality of rivers in the Crusade, where they acted as the boundaries between forces but also as a crucial location for anonymity and secrecy, heightened the role of water in the lives of those involved with the Crusade. Local environmental factors and dispersal-based processes can both influence the structure of metacommunities in freshwater ecosystems. Describing these patterns is especially important for biomonitoring approaches that are based on inferences made from benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. Here, we examine the metacommunity structure of chironomid assemblages collected from 28 sampling stations along the Southern Morava River, Serbia. We examined the extent of dispersal-based processes along a temporal scale. We obtained 8 models for the different sampling seasons that determined the spatial variables that best explained variability in chironomid assemblages. Spatial processes were found to be a significant predictor of variation for chironomids during the late winter/spring (March and May) and autumn (October and November), concordant with the known phenology of common taxa. Species sorting and mass effects were found to be significant processes that structured the chironomid metacommunity. In addition, biological interactions, inferred from fish biomass, and habitat traits, demonstrated by macrophyte and riparian vegetation, were found to influence species sorting. A high variability of chironomid metacommunity structure across sampling seasons suggests that monitoring programs that include macroinvertebrates in bioassessment should avoid months with pronounced spatial processes, and consequently maximize a correlation between community structure and local environmental factors. Ranunculus species grouped in the section Batrachium (water crowfoots) indicate the most valuable fluvial habitat in Europe under the EU Habitats Directive, and recognition of their environmental preferences plays a crucial role in efficient conservation. Moreover, water crowfoots are used in various monitoring systems throughout Europe. The aim of this study was to identify the distribution patterns of two common water crowfoot species (Ranunculus fluitans, R. circinatus) and their hybrid (R. circinatus × R. fluitans) in relation to environmental variables in rivers. Various chemical and hydromorphological parameters were estimated for 54 river sites where 58 different Batrachium populations were recorded. Our study revealed the most distinct positive reaction of R. fluitans to rhithral conditions characterized by rapid currents and coarse substrate. R. circinatus × R. fluitans preferred larger channels, although this taxon also flourished in rhithral rivers. The preferences of R. circinatus were not so evident confirming its occurrence under a wide range of habitat conditions. The ecological reaction of the hybrid was compared with its parental species, revealing their ecological specificity, which is useful in designing appropriate conservation programmes. Purpose: Radiocarbon and tritium are the dominant radionuclides released by nuclear industries over the world. Close interactions of these elements with particulate organic matter (POM) in soils and rivers are widely reported in the literature but only few studies focus on their relationships with POM within nuclearized rivers. Here, we focus on the nuclearized Rhone River (France) and its tributaries in order to highlight the behavior of these two radionuclides owing to POM amounts and nature. Materials and methods: Over the 2001–2021 period, suspended sediments (TSS) samples were acquired and analyzed thanks to the MOOSE network (Mediterranean Ocean Observing System for the Environment) and of the Rhone Sediment Observatory. Over this period, TSS, particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and chlorophyll and phaeopigment contents were determined at the SORA monitoring station located at the downstream part of the Rhone River. These parameters were measured from daily to weekly after continuous filtration of the waters collected from high-frequency water samplings. Larger amounts of TSS were also collected by using time integrating particle traps (PT) at the SORA station and on several Rhone tributaries. These latter samples were analyzed for global biogeochemistry (Rock Eval 6), organically bound tritium (OBT), and radiocarbon. Results and discussion: At the downstream part of the Rhone River, POC represents from 1 to 10 wt.% of the TSS even though this amount rises to 20 wt.% very occasionally. POC/TSS shows a positive relationship with the chlorophyll/phaeopigment amounts reinforcing the non-negligible production of autochthonous POM in this river. The increase of 14C contents and Δ14C signatures with the amount of aquatic POM underlines that a significant part of 14C from industrial releases is transported as fresh and labile particulate organic compounds. In tributaries, Δ14C signatures decrease with the rising amounts of 14C depleted refractory carbon (RC/TOC) coming from soil erosion in a similar way. OBT contents show no relationships with neither the contents nor the nature of naturally occurring POM. Conclusions: Autochthonous POM would constitute a key route to transfer radiocarbon from nuclear releases towards the food chain. Normalizing radiocarbon contents with RC/POC constitutes a new powerful tool to better assess the environmental labelling of radiocarbon discharged by the nuclear industries as the dilution effect generated by dead carbon is discarded. Aquatic vegetation is ubiquitous in lowland rivers, and it is typically present in the shape of spatial self-organized patches of biomass. In this work, we mathematically define the threshold conditions for the incipient formation of self-organized vegetated patterns in the shape of central or multiple row patches. The analysis is carried out through a linear stability analysis whereby the 2D eco-hydrodynamic model is linearized and the growth rate of small-scale perturbations is evaluated considering a basic state represented by an initially uniformly vegetated and straight channel having a certain aspect ratio and Froude number. Results illustrate that, for given vegetation properties, instability arises when both the Froude number and the aspect ratio are higher than a given threshold; in this case, self-organization occurs, and spatial patterns of patches will develop according to the wavelength associated to the maximum growth rate. Moreover, instability and self-organization take place when the undisturbed vegetation density is lower than upper bound; this suggests that densely vegetated channels, as in the case of rivers populated by invasive species, will not experience the formation of any spatial patterns. Compared to technical infrastructure, nature-based solutions, NBS, strive to work with nature and to move beyond business-as-usual practices in order to address societal challenges such as flood risks. This research aims to spatially identify possible NBS areas and evaluate the areas capacity to provide selected ecosystem services, ES, for the Lahn river landscape in Germany. The research follows the functional landscape approach using hydromorphological landscape units, HLU, based on specific biophysical spatial criteria, such as slope, to then identify locations which may be considered suitable for NBS. The current ES delivery of these possible NBS areas is then evaluated. The three ES assessed are carbon storage, nutrient retention and recreation. We then undertake a geospatial comparison analysis to show the spatial relationships and patterns that emerge in regards to the ES configuration of the distinct NBS apt areas. Results show the HLU method serves to delineate and identify areas where NBS may exist or be implemented. The data depicts a distinct spatial pattern for each possible NBS space and complementary ES delivery. This explorative method is a useful spatial approach that can support NBS implementation and serve to investigate the multiple benefits NBS provide. The use of ecosystem services to compare and understand NBS is a viable prospect that must, however, be cautiously, locally and scientifically approached. Noticeable limitations regarding ES assessment remain, as available methods are often insufficiently inclusive of natural ecosystem processes and functions.
