Functional materials with organic/inorganic composites as the main matrix and rare earth ion complexes as the guest have shown a very broad application prospect for antibiotic sensors. However, Eu3+-complex often relies on a single fluorescence response signal, which is susceptible to changes in the detection environment and cannot simultaneously detect and remove tetracycline (TC). Herein, green fluorescent covalent two-dimensional organic framework (COF-TD) is synthesized, followed by modification of Eu3+ to synthesize COF-TD@Eu3+. In the ratiometric sensor, Eu3+ serves as the recognition site and specific response probe for TC, while COF-TD is the fluorescence reference and carrier for Eu3+. Due to the antenna effect, TC enhances the red fluorescence of Eu3+, while the green fluorescence of COF-TD remains almost stable. Based on the change of fluorescence intensity and fluorescence color from green to red, the efficient ratiometric sensing can be finished in 1 min. The developed method shows high sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.3 μM and high selectivity to TC which makes the method applicable to detect TC in traditional Chinese medicine preparations. In addition, due to the high specific surface area of COFs and specific adsorption sites, COF-TD@Eu3+ also shows good performance for TC removal. The findings show that the maximum adsorption capacity is 137.3 mg g−1 and the adsorption equilibrium is reached in 30 min. Smartphone assisted COF-TD@Eu3+ for both ratiometric fluorescence detection and detecting the absorption of TC is proposed for the first time. The molecular cryptosteganography that transforms the selective response of COF-TD@Eu3+ to binary strings is anticipated to advance utilization of nanomaterials in logic sensing and information safety. In recent years, Clusterin, a glycosylated protein with multiple biological functions, has attracted extensive research attention. It is closely associated with the physiological and pathological states within the organism. Particularly in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research, Clusterin plays a significant role in the disease's occurrence and progression. Numerous studies have demonstrated a close association between Clusterin and AD. Firstly, the expression level of Clusterin in the brain tissue of AD patients is closely related to pathological progression. Secondly, Clusterin is involved in the deposition and formation of β-amyloid, which is a crucial process in AD development. Furthermore, Clusterin may affect the pathogenesis of AD through mechanisms such as regulating inflammation, controlling cell apoptosis, and clearing pathological proteins. Therefore, further research on the relationship between Clusterin and AD will contribute to a deeper understanding of the etiology of this neurodegenerative disease and provide a theoretical basis for developing early diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for AD. We theoretically investigate the tunability of magnomechanically induced transparency (MMIT) phenomenon and slow–fast light propagation in a hybrid cavity magnomechanical system which consists of two ferromagnetic-material yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres and a nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble (NVE) inside a microwave cavity. We not only observed two magnetically induced transparencies (MITs), but also MMIT due to the nonlinear phonon–magnon interaction in the probe output spectrum. We studied the effect of NVE in the output field which showed that we can obtain better transparency by selecting the appropriate NVE parameters. Besides, we set up a new scheme for measuring the coupling strength of NVE-magnon. We further explored the slow–fast light conversion phenomenon and found that it can be achieved by changing the coupling strength of NVE-magnon. Rab proteins are important components of small GTPases and play crucial roles in regulating intracellular transportation and cargo delivery. Maintaining the proper functions of Rab proteins is essential for normal cellular activities such as cell signaling, division, and survival. Due to their vital and irreplaceable role in regulating intracellular vesicle transportation, accumulated researches have shown that the abnormalities of Rab proteins and their effectors are closely related to human diseases. Here, this review focused on Rab21, a member of the Rab family, and introduced the structures and functions of Rab21, as well as the regulatory mechanisms of Rab21 in human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and inflammation. A retrospective analysis was conducted based on the clinical data from 60 patients older than 16 years from January 2016 to January 2021. All the patients were newly diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) with an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of zero. We compared the hematological response and survival of haploidentical–allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HID-HSCT) (n = 25) and intensive immunosuppressive therapy (IST) (n = 35) treatments. At six months, the overall response rate and complete response were significantly higher in the HID-HSCT group than those in the IST group (84.0% vs. 40.0%, P = 0.001; 80.0% vs. 17.1%, P = 0.001). With a median follow-up of 18.5 months (4.3~30.8 months), patients in the HID-HSCT group had longer overall survival and event-free survival (80.0% vs. 47.9%, P = 0.0419; 79.2% vs. 33.5%, P = 0.0048). These data suggested that HID-HSCT might be an effective alternative treatment option for adult patients with SAA with an ANC of zero, which requires further validation in an additional prospective study. We study constraints on the effective field theory (EFT) from the relative entropy between two theories: we refer to these as target and reference theories. The consequence of the non-negativity of the relative entropy is investigated by choosing some reference theories for a given target theory. We consider the target and reference theories described by field theories, quantum mechanical models, etc. It is found that the constraints on EFTs, e.g., the single massless scalar field with the dimension-eight operator, and SMEFT dimension-eight bosonic operators, arise when the higher-derivative operators are generated by the interaction between heavy and light fields. In particular, the constraints on the SMEFT dimension-eight bosonic operators with the SU(N) and SU(n) gauge fields, and the operator quartics in the Higgs are newly studied, and some stronger bounds than the unitarity and causality considerations are derived. The constraints on Einstein-Maxwell theory with higher-derivative operators from the non-negativity of relative entropy are also investigated. The constraints on such EFTs from the relative entropy hold under an assumption that perturbative corrections from the interaction involving higher-derivative operators of light fields are not dominant in the EFTs. Context: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative syndrome, which adversely disturbs cognitive abilities as well as intellectual processes and frequently occurs in the elderly. Inhibition of cholinesterase is a valuable approach to upsurge acetylcholine concentrations in the brain and persuades the development of multi-targeted ligands against cholinesterases. Methods: The current study aims to determine the binding potential accompanied by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of stilbenes-designed analogs against both cholinesterases (Acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase) and neurotrophin targets for effective AD therapeutics. Docking results have shown that the WS6 compound exhibited the least binding energy − 10.1 kcal/mol with Acetylcholinesterase and − 7.8 kcal/mol with butyrylcholinesterase. The WS6 also showed a better binding potential with neurotrophin targets that are Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor, Neurotrophin 4, Nerve Growth Factor, and Neurotrophin 3. The tested compounds particularly WS6 revealed significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities through the comparative docking analysis with Fluorouracil and Melatonin as control drugs of antioxidants while Celecoxib and Anakinra as anti-inflammatory. The bioinformatics approaches including molecular docking calculations followed by the pharmacokinetics analysis and molecular dynamic simulations were accomplished to explore the capabilities of designed stilbenes as effective and potential leads. Root mean square deviation, root mean square fluctuations, and MM-GBSA calculations were performed through molecular dynamic simulations to extract the structural and residual variations and binding free energies through the 50-ns time scale. Context: In this paper, the adsorption characteristics of five sulfonamide antibiotic molecules on carbon nanotubes were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption configurations of different adsorption sites were optimized, and the most stable adsorption configuration of each sulfonamide molecule was determined by adsorption energy comparison, and the relative adsorption stability of five sulfonamide molecules on carbon nanotubes was determined by comparing their adsorption energies, i.e., sulfamethazine > sulfadiazine > sulfamerazine > sulfamethoxazole > sulfanilamide. The electron densities of the adsorption configurations were then calculated to confirm that the adsorption of five sulfonamide drug molecules on carbon nanotubes should be physical adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption energy of five sulfonamide molecules on carbon nanotubes in the aqueous environment was larger than that in the vacuum even though the adsorption process remain to be physical adsorption. The adsorption characteristics of the five sulfonamide molecules in various acid–base environments were finally investigated. In contrast, the adsorption energies of the five drug molecules in acid–base environments were significantly reduced, indicating that carbon nanotubes may need to have a suitable pH range to achieve the optimal adsorption effect when they are used for the treatment of sulfonamide antibiotics. Methods: In this paper, we use density functional theory (DFT) with PBE functional to study the adsorption properties of five sulfonamides on carbon nanotubes. The structural optimization and the calculation of electronic structural properties are carried out by CP2K package (version 7.1), adopting the DZVP-MOLOPT-SR-GTH basis set and Goedeck-Teter-Hutter (GTH) pseudo potential. IKKα has been shown to be responsible of multiple pro-tumorigenic functions and therapy resistance independent of canonical NF-κB, but its role in acquired chemotherapy resistance in breast cancer remains unclarified. In this study, we obtained pre-treatment biopsy and post-treatment mastectomy specimens from a retrospective cohort of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC) (n = 43). Immunohistochemical methods were used to detect the expression of IKKα before and after NAC, and the relationship between IKKα and the pathologic response to NAC was examined. In addition, we developed a new ADR-resistant MDA-MB-231 cell line(MDA-MB-231/ADR) and analyzed these cells for changes in IKKα expression, the role and mechanisms of the increased IKKα in promoting drug resistance were determined in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated that the expression of IKKα in residual TNBC tissues after chemotherapy was significantly higher than that before chemotherapy, and was positively correlated with lower pathological reaction. IKKα expression was significantly higher in ADR-resistant TNBC cells than in ADR-sensitive cells, IKKα knockdown results in apoptotic cell death of chemoresistant cells upon drug treatment. Moreover, IKKα knockdown promotes chemotherapeutic drug-induced tumor cell death in an transplanted tumor mouse model. Functionally, we demonstrated that IKKα knockdown significantly upregulated the expression of cleaved caspase 3 and Bax and inhibited the expression of Bcl-2 upon ADR treatment. Our findings highlighted that IKKα exerts an important and previously unknown role in promoting chemoresistance in TNBC, combining IKKα inhibition with chemotherapy may be an effective strategy to improve treatment outcome in chemoresistant TNBC patients. Background: Whether insulin resistance underlies deep venous thrombosis (DVT) development in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is unclear. In this study, the association between plasma insulin levels and DVT was analyzed in patients with severe TBI. Methods: A prospective observational study of 73 patients measured insulin, glucose, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), inflammatory factors, and hematological profiles within four preset times during the first 14 days after TBI. Ultrasonic surveillance of DVT was tracked. Two-way analysis of variance was used to determine the factors that discriminated between patients with and without DVT or with and without insulin therapy. Partial correlations of insulin level with all the variables were conducted separately in patients with DVT or patients without DVT. Factors associated with DVT were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression. Neurological outcomes 6 months after TBI were assessed. Results: Among patients with a mean (± standard deviation) age of 53 (± 16 years), DVT developed in 20 patients (27%) on median 10.4 days (range 4–22), with higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores but similar Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores and TBI severity. Patients with DVT were more likely to receive insulin therapy than patients without DVT (60% vs. 28%; P = 0.012); hence, they had higher 14-day insulin levels. However, insulin levels were comparable between patients with DVT and patients without DVT in the subgroups of patients with insulin therapy (n = 27) and patients without insulin therapy (n = 46). The platelet profile significantly discriminated between patients with and without DVT. Surprisingly, none of the coagulation profiles, blood cell counts, or inflammatory mediators differed between the two groups. Patients with insulin therapy had significantly higher insulin (P = 0.006), glucose (P < 0.001), and GLP-1 (P = 0.01) levels and were more likely to develop DVT (60% vs. 15%; P < 0.001) along with concomitant platelet depletion. Insulin levels correlated with glucose, GLP-1 levels, and platelet count exclusively in patients without DVT. Conversely, in patients with DVT, insulin correlated negatively with GLP-1 levels (P = 0.016). Age (P = 0.01) and elevated insulin levels at days 4–7 (P = 0.04) were independently associated with DVT. Patients with insulin therapy also showed worse Glasgow Outcome Scale scores (P = 0.001). Conclusions: Elevated insulin levels in the first 14 days after TBI may indicate insulin resistance, which is associated with platelet hyperactivity, and thus increasing the risk of DVT. Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by progressive synovial inflammation and joint destruction, with a largely unknown etiology. Studies have suggested that autophagy and its expression may be involved in the pathogenesis of RA; however, autophagy-related genes in RA are still largely unidentified. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify and validate autophagy-related genes in RA. Methods: We identified differentially expressed autophagy-related genes between patients with RA and healthy individuals using gene expression profiles in the GSE55235 dataset and R software. Subsequently, correlation analysis, protein–protein interaction, gene ontology enrichment, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses were carried out using these differentially expressed autophagy-related genes. Finally, our results were validated by examining the expression of differentially expressed autophagy-related hub genes in clinical samples using qRT-PCR. Results: We identified 52 potential autophagy-related genes in RA based on bioinformatic analyses. Ten hub genes, CASP8, CTSB, TNFSF10, FADD, BAX, MYC, FOS, CDKN1A, GABARAPL1, and BNIP3, were validated to be differentially expressed and may serve as valuable prognostic markers and new potential therapeutic targets for RA via the regulation of autophagy. Conclusions: Our results may help improve the understanding of RA pathogenesis. Autophagy-related genes in RA could be valuable biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis and they might be exploited clinically as therapeutic targets in the future. An intracavity-squeezed cooling scheme is proposed for cooling mechanical resonator close to its ground state in a three-cavity optomechanical system. It is found that in the presence of optical parametric amplifier (OPA) medium, the scheme is capable of completely inhibiting the quantum backaction heating process. Specifically, as the heating rate decreases to zero, and the net cooling rate increases, so the final phonon number decreases significantly. There are no strict requirements for the two auxiliary cavities, and the final phonon number can be less than 1 in a larger range. Li-rich materials, due to their high capacity (> 250 mAh·g−1), have recently been considered as an alternative to the current generation of cathode materials for Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their inferior cycling stability limits their practical applicability. Doping is a common technique to solve this problem. However, anion doping remains relatively underexplored. Fluorine (F) is one of the most effective anion dopants owning to the improved capacity, cycling stability, and rate performance in batteries. The explanations and experimental results, however, vary significantly from study to study. Herein, we find that bulk F-doping significantly improves both rate performance and cycling stability, likely driven by charge compensation and greater electronegativity. Additionally, bulk F-doping occasionally improves capacity via enhanced activation and occasionally decreases capacity by preventing activation from occurring. Surface F-doping has similar effects to bulk F-doping on capacity and stability, while significantly hindering the rate performance. Furthermore, the improvements in surface-doped materials do not appear to be a result of specific surface modification, and instead can be ascribed to the effect of fluorine on the near-surface bulk material. Greater understanding of fluorine's influence on activation, in particular, is required to unlock the full potential of synergistic cation/anion co-doping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neurons are one of the most densely distributed cell types in the central amygdala (CeA), and are involved in a wide range of behaviors including anxiety and learning. However, the fundamental input circuits and patterns of CeA-CRF neurons are still unclear. Here, we generate a monosynaptic-input map onto CeA-CRF neurons at single-cell resolution via a retrograde rabies-virus system. We find all inputs are located in 44 nested subregions that directly innervate CeA-CRF neurons; most of them are top-down convergent inputs expressing Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, and are centralized in cortex, especially in the layer 4 of the somatosensory cortex, which may directly relay information from the thalamus. While the bottom-up divergent inputs have the highest proportion of glutamate decarboxylase expression. Finally, en passant structures of single input neuron are revealed by in-situ reconstruction in a modified 3D-reference atlas, represented by a Periaqueductal gray-Subparafascicular nucleus-Subthalamic nucleus-Globus pallidus-Caudoputamen-CeA pathway. Taken together, our findings provide morphological and connectivity properties of inputs onto CeA-CRF neurons, which may provide insights for future studies interrogating circuit mechanisms of CeA-CRF neurons in mediating various functions. To realize first-order electroweak phase transition, it is necessary to generate a barrier in the thermal Higgs potential, which is usually triggered by scalar degree of freedom. We instead investigate phase transition patterns in pure fermion extensions of the standard model, and find that additional fermions with mass hierarchy and mixing could develop such a barrier and realize a strongly first-order phase transition in such models. In the Higgs potential with polynomial parametrization, the barrier can be generated in the following two patterns by fermionic reduction effects: (I) positive quadratic term, negative cubic term and positive quartic term or (II) positive quadratic term, negative quartic term and positive higher dimensional term, such as dimensional 6 operator. Regulation of microglial activation and neuroinflammation are critical factors in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain injury. Interest in protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) as a pharmaceutical target for various diseases is creasing. However, it is unclear the expression and functions of PAR2 in hypoxia-ischemic (HI) brain injury. Mice with HI and cells with oxygen–glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGD/R) were studied. Immunoblot and qRT-PCR were used to study the differential gene expression in cultured microglia and neurons. Immunofluorescent staining was used to study the expression pattern of PAR2 in the HI brain and phagocytotic activity of microglia after OGD/R. In neonatal mice brain after HI, we found PAR2 expression was abundant in neurons, but barely in microglia from the contralateral side of cortex and hippocampus. Conversely, PAR2 expression was barely in neurons while significantly increased in activated microglia from the ipsilateral side of cortex and hippocampus. The activations of PAR2 were increased in both microglia and neuron in a cell model of OGD/R. PAR2 activation mediated the cross-talk between microglia and neurons including the following: microglial PAR2 mediated inflammatory responses that induced neuronal damage; neuronal PAR2 regulated chemokines that recruited activated microglia to damage area; microglia PAR2 controlled the phagocytosis of degenerating neurons. These data suggested differential expression and distinct roles of PAR2 in microglia and neurons after HI injury; thereby, interventions targeting PAR2 may provide insights into the inflammatory-related diseases. Since the discovery of ketamine anti-depressant effects in last decade, it has effectively revitalized interest in investigating excitatory synapses hypothesis in the pathogenesis of depression. In the present study, we aimed to reveal the excitatory synaptic regulation of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) neuron in the hypothalamus, which is the driving force in hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis regulation. This study constitutes the first observation of an increased density of PSD-93-CRH co-localized neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of patients with major depression. PSD-93 overexpression in CRH neurons in the PVN induced depression-like behaviors in mice, accompanied by increased serum corticosterone level. PSD-93 knockdown relieved the depression-like phenotypes in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression model. Electrophysiological data showed that PSD-93 overexpression increased CRH neurons synaptic activity, while PSD-93 knockdown decreased CRH neurons synaptic activity. Furthermore, we found that LPS induced increased the release of glutamate from microglia to CRH neurons resulted in depression-like behaviors using fiber photometry recordings. Together, these results show that PSD-93 is involved in the pathogenesis of depression via increasing the synaptic activity of CRH neurons in the PVN, leading to the hyperactivity of the HPA axis that underlies depression-like behaviors. To improve the sulfur loading capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries (Li-S batteries) cathode and avoid the inevitable "shuttle effect", hollow N doped carbon coated CoO/SnO2 (CoO/SnO2@NC) composite has been designed and prepared by a hydrothermal-calcination method. The specific surface area of CoO/SnO2@NC composite is 85.464 m2·g−1, and the pore volume is 0.1189 cm3·g−1. The hollow core-shell structure as a carrier has a sulfur loading amount of 66.10%. The initial specific capacity of the assembled Li-S batteries is 395.7 mAh·g−1 at 0.2 C, which maintains 302.7 mAh·g−1 after 400 cycles. When the rate increases to 2.5 C, the specific capacity still has 221.2 mAh·g−1. The excellent lithium storage performance is attributed to the core-shell structure with high specific surface area and porosity. This structure effectively increases the sulfur loading, enhances the chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfides, and reduces direct contact between CoO/SnO2 and the electrolyte. Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (X. oryzae) is a bacterial pathovar of rice diseases all over the world. Owing to emerging antibacterial resistance, phage therapies have gained significant attention to treat various bacterial infections. Nevertheless, comprehensive research is needed for their use as a safe biocontrol agent. In this study, isolation and characterization of a novel phage Xoo-sp15, that infects X. oryzae was ascertained through experimental and bioinformatics analyses to determine its virulent potency and reliability. High throughput sequencing demonstrated that Xoo-sp15 has a dsDNA genome with a total size of 157,091 bp and 39.9% GC content lower than its host (63.6%). Morphological and phylogenetic analyses characterized it as a new member of the Bastille-like group within the family Herelleviridae. In silico analysis revealed that it contains 229 open reading frames and 16 tRNAs. Additionally, this novel phage does not contain any resistant determinants and can infect nine X. oryzae strains. In this paper, the flow field around NACA0015 hydrofoil is calculated under the condition of two-phase cavitating flow to provide a theoretical guidance for reducing the cavitation noise. A modified turbulence model coupled with the Zwart cavitation model is used to calculate the flow field. According to the computed sound source data, the dipole sound pressure distribution diagrams for the extremely short time and the complete time around the hydrofoil under different working conditions are obtained. The sound pressure distribution and the sound pressure amplitude are analyzed in detail. In addition, the field points around the hydrofoil are selected to generate the corresponding frequency response function curves, which are analyzed from the aspects of the trend, the variation and the extreme value. The results show that the dipole characteristics are gradually diminished and finally disappear with the increase of the frequency. Supercapacitors are favorable energy storage devices in the field of emerging energy technologies with high power density, excellent cycle stability and environmental benignity. The performance of supercapacitors is definitively influenced by the electrode materials. Nickel sulfides have attracted extensive interest in recent years due to their specific merits for supercapacitor application. However, the distribution of electrochemically active sites critically limits their electrochemical performance. Notable improvements have been achieved through various strategies such as building synergetic structures with conductive substrates, enhancing the active sites by nanocrystallization and constructing nanohybrid architecture with other electrode materials. This article overviews the progress in the reasonable design and preparation of nickel sulfides and their composite electrodes combined with various bifunctional electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC)-based substances (e.g., graphene, hollow carbon) and pseudocapacitive materials (e.g., transition-metal oxides, sulfides, nitrides). Moreover, the corresponding electrochemical performances, reaction mechanisms, emerging challenges and future perspectives are briefly discussed and summarized. The ventral part of the anteromedial thalamic nucleus (AMv) is in a position to convey information to the cortico-hippocampal-amygdalar circuit involved in the processing of fear memory. Corticotropin-releasing-factor (CRF) neurons are closely associated with the regulation of stress and fear. However, few studies have focused on the role of thalamic CRF neurons in fear memory. In the present study, using a conditioned fear paradigm in CRF transgenic mice, we found that the c-Fos protein in the AMv CRF neurons was significantly increased after cued fear expression. Chemogenetic activation of AMv CRF neurons enhanced cued fear expression, whereas inhibition had the opposite effect on the cued fear response. Moreover, chemogenetic manipulation of AMv CRF neurons did not affect fear acquisition or contextual fear expression. In addition, anterograde tracing of projections revealed that AMv CRF neurons project to wide areas of the cerebral cortex and the limbic system. SnO2 is considered to be a promising candidate as anode material for lithium ion batteries, due to its high theoretical specific capacity (1494 mAh·g−1). Nevertheless, SnO2-based anodes suffer from poor electronic conductivity and serious volume variation (300%) during lithiation/delithiation process, leading to fast capacity fading. To solve these problems, SnO2 quantum dots modified N-doped carbon spheres (SnO2 QDs@N–C) are fabricated by facile hydrolysis process of SnCl2, accompanied with the polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy), followed by a calcination method. When used as anodes for lithium ion batteries, SnO2 QDs@N–C exhibits high discharge capacity, superior rate properties as well as good cyclability. The carbon matrix completely encapsulates the SnO2 quantum dots, preventing the aggregation and volume change during cycling. Furthermore, the high N content produces abundant defects in carbon matrix. It is worth noting that SnO2 QDs@N–C shows excellent capacitive contribution properties, which may be due to the ultra-small size of SnO2 and high conductivity of the carbon matrix. SnO2 quantum dots modified N-doped carbon spheres are successfully fabricated by facile hydrolysis-high temperature calcination approach using SnCl2 and pyrrole monomer as precursors. Aerobic granular sludge technology has great potential for the treatment of petroleum refinery wastewater. However, strategies to shorten the granulation time and improvement the stability still need to be developed. In this work, biochar was prepared from waste petroleum activated sludge (biochar-WPS) and used in a sequencing batch reactor for the treatment of petroleum refinery wastewater. Biochar-WPS presented the surface area of 229.77 m2/g, pore volume of 0.28 cm3/g, H/C and O/C atomic ratios of 0.42 and 0.21, respectively. The porous structure and a high degree of hydrophilicity were found to facilitate microbial colonization and adhesion as well as particle aggregation. Application of biochar-WPS resulted in the formation of more substantial and stable aerobic granules (~ 66% of granules > 0.46 mm diameter) 15 days earlier compared with the control. The addition of biochar-WPS enhanced the average removal efficiency of chemical organic demand (~ 3%), oil (~ 4%) and total nitrogen (~ 10%) over the control. Increased microbial richness and diversity were observed within the formed granules and had an increased (~ 4%) proportion of denitrifying bacteria. The hippocampal CA3 contributes to spatial working memory (SWM), but which stage of SWM the CA3 neurons act on and whether the lateralization of CA3 function occurs in SWM is also unknown. Here, we reveal increased neural activity in both sample and choice phases of SWM. Left CA3 (LCA3) neurons show higher sensitivity in the choice phase during the correct versus error trials compared with right CA3 (RCA3) neurons. LCA3 initiates firing prior to RCA3 in the choice phase. Optogenetic suppression of pyramidal neurons in LCA3 disrupts SWM only in the choice phase. Furthermore, we discover that parvalbumin (PV) neurons, rather than cholinergic neurons in the medial septum (DB were cholinergic neurons), can project directly to unilateral CA3. Selective suppression of PV neurons in the MS projecting to LCA3 impairs SWM. The findings suggest that MSPV-LCA3 projection plays a crucial role in manipulating the lateralization of LCA3 in the retrieval of SWM. The CA3 region of the hippocampus is involved in spatial working memory. Background: The molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in general pediatric wards and county-level hospitals were rarely reported in China. Methods: Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from children hospitalized with respiratory tract infection (RTI) in Zhongjiang and Youyang counties in 2015. All isolates were typed by multilocus sequence, staphylococcal protein A, accessory gene regulator (agr), and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec [SCCmec, for methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) only]. Polymerase chain reaction was used to screen 21 super-antigen (SAg) genes and panton–valentine leukocidin (pvl). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by E test. Results: A total of 2136 children were enrolled. Overall, 125 (5.9%) children carried S. aureus, among which MRSA accounted for 42.4%. ST59-SCCmec type IV-t437-agr group I (58.5%) was the most prevalent genotype in MRSA, and ST188-t189-agr group I (22.2%) was the top genotype in methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). The pvl carriage rate in MRSA and MSSA was 15.1% and 9.7%, respectively (P = 0.4112). About 96.8% of S. aureus isolates were positive for at least one SAg gene. The most common SAg gene profile in the dominant ST59 clone was seb–sek–seq (42.8%). All S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin and erythromycin (minimum inhibitory concentration 90 was > 32 and 256 mg/L to penicillin and erythromycin, respectively), but usually susceptible to other tested non-β-lactam antimicrobials. Conclusions: Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA were detected with a high frequency in children with RTI in county-level hospitals of China. Osteosarcoma is a rare primary malignancy of bone that is prone to early metastasis. Resection surgery and chemotherapeutic regimens are current standard treatments for osteosarcoma. However, the long-term survival rate of patients with osteosarcoma is low due to a high risk of metastasis. Hence, a new approach is urgently needed to improve the treatment of osteosarcoma. Compared with chemotherapy, natural active constituents isolated from herbs exhibit less adverse effects and better anti-tumor effects. This study aimed to summarize the anticancer effects of constituents of herbs on the progression and metastasis of osteosarcoma cells. It showed that many constituents of herbs inhibited osteosarcoma by targeting proliferation, matrix metalloproteinases, integrin and cadherin, and angiogenesis. A promoter can be regulated by various cis-acting elements so that delineation of the regulatory modes among them may help understand developmental, environmental and genetic mechanisms in gene activity. Here we report that the human dopamine transporter gene SLC6A3 carries a 5′ distal 5-kb super enhancer (5KSE) which upregulated the promoter by 5-fold. Interestingly, 5KSE is able to prevent 3′ downstream variable number tandem repeats (3'VNTRs) from silencing the promoter. This new enhancer consists of a 5′VNTR and three repetitive sub-elements that are conserved in primates. Two of 5KSE's sub-elements, E-9.7 and E-8.7, upregulate the promoter, but only the later could continue doing so in the presence of 3'VNTRs. This paper proposes a stable and accurate object registration pipeline for markerless augmented reality applications. We present two novel algorithms for object recognition and matching to improve the registration accuracy from model to scene transformation via point cloud fusion. Whilst the first algorithm effectively deals with simple scenes with few object occlusions, the second algorithm handles cluttered scenes with partial occlusions for robust real-time object recognition and matching. The computational framework includes a locally supported Gaussian weight function to enable repeatable detection of 3D descriptors. We apply a bilateral filtering and outlier removal to preserve edges of point cloud and remove some interference points in order to increase matching accuracy. Extensive experiments have been carried to compare the proposed algorithms with four most used methods. Background: Hippocampal neurogenesis has been widely considered as one of the potential biological mechanisms for the treatment of depression caused by chronic stress. Many natural products have been reported to be beneficial for neurogenesis. Objectives: The present study is designed to investigate the effect of dragon's blood extract (DBE) and its biologically active compound, pterostilbene (PTE), on hippocampal neurogenesis. Methods: The male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used in this study, which were maintained on the normal, DBE and PTE diet groups for 4 weeks before dissection in the normal rat model and behavioral testing in the CUS depression rat model. Meanwhile, DMI-treated rats are subcutaneously injected with DMI (10 mg/kg, i.p.). Results: Results revealed that DBE and PTE have the ability to promote hippocampal neurogenesis. DBE and PTE also promoted the proliferation of neural stem cells isolated from the brain of suckling rats. Oral administration of DBE and PTE induced the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in chronic unexpected stressed (CUS) model rats, and improved the behavioral ability and alleviated depress-like symptoms of CUS rats. It was also observed that PTE treatment significantly induced the expression of neurogenesis-related factors, including BDNF, pERK, and pCREB. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common complication that leads to long-term cognitive impairments and increased mortality in sepsis survivors. The mechanisms underlying this complication remain unclear and an effective intervention is lacking. Accumulating evidence suggests the nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor protein3 (NLRP3)/caspase-1 pathway is involved in several neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, we hypothesized that the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway is involved in NLRP3-mediated pyroptosis, maturation and release of inflammatory cytokines, and cognitive deficits in SAE. We used the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 and the caspase-1 inhibitor Ac-YVAD-CMK to study the role of the NLRP3/caspase-1 pathway in pyroptosis and cognitive deficits in a mouse model of SAE. Mice were randomly assigned to one of six groups: sham+saline, sham+MCC950, sham+Ac-YVAD-CMK, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)+saline, CLP+MCC950, and CLP+Ac-YVAD-CMK. Surviving mice underwent behavioral tests or had hippocampal tissues collected for histochemical analysis and biochemical assays. Our results show that CLP-induced hippocampus-dependent memory deficits are accompanied by increased NLRP3 and caspase-1 positive cells, and augmented protein levels of NLRP3, caspase-1, gasdermin-D, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus. In addition, administration of MCC950 or Ac-YVAD-CMK rescues cognitive deficits and ameliorates increased hippocampal NLRP3-mediated neuronal pyroptosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae is a bacterial pathogen that gives rise to diseases in rice all over the world. A bacteriophage infecting this bacterium was isolated from rice fields in China. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of this phage, which has a linear dsDNA genome of 309,023 bp and a G + C content of 42.43%. It contains 401 open reading frames and encodes 28 tRNAs. Penehyclidine hydrochloride (PHC), a type of hyoscyamus drug, has both antimuscarinic and antinicotinic activities and retains potent central and peripheral anticholinergic activities. Compared with other hyoscyamine, the notable advantage of PHC is that it has few M2 receptor-associated cardiovascular side effects. Recent studies and clinical trials have suggested that treatment with penehyclidine hydrochloride may also possess good effects in the treatment of lung injury. The mechanism responsible for this effect has yet to be determined; however, one possibility is that they might do so by a direct effect on pulmonary vascular endothelium. Since inflammatory reactions of the endothelium are signs of endothelial injury in the pathogenesis of lung injury, we determined the effects of penehyclidine hydrochloride on endothelial inflammatory injury in cultured human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMVEC). Furthermore, human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells were transfected with a shRNA-containing plasmid that specifically targets beta-arrestin-1 mRNA, to test whether the effect of penehyclidine hydrochloride on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endothelial cell injury is dependent on its upregulation of beta-arrestin-1 or not. Penehyclidine hydrochloride reduced the inflammatory responses to LPS stimulation, as evidenced by reduced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukelin-6 (IL-6) levels, as well as vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expressions. This was found to result from increased beta-arrestin-1 expression and decreased nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. Expression of a shRNA-containing plasmid that specifically targets beta-arrestin-1 mRNA nullified these effects of penehyclidine hydrochloride. The results indicate that penehyclidine hydrochloride exerts a protective effect on pulmonary microvascular endothelial inflammatory injury induced by LPS. Stem cell research has recently become a hot research topic in biomedical research due to the foreseen unlimited potential of stem cells in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. For many years, medicine has been facing intense challenges, such as an insufficient number of organ donations that is preventing clinicians to fulfill the increasing needs. To try and overcome this regrettable matter, research has been aiming at developing strategies to facilitate the in vitro culture and study of stem cells as a tool for tissue regeneration. Meanwhile, new developments in the microfluidics technology brought forward emerging cell culture applications that are currently allowing for a better chemical and physical control of cellular microenvironment. This review presents the latest developments in stem cell research that brought new therapies to the clinics and how the convergence of the microfluidics technology with stem cell research can have positive outcomes on the fields of regenerative medicine and high-throughput screening. These advances will bring new translational solutions for drug discovery and will upgrade in vitro cell culture to a new level of accuracy and performance. We hope this review will provide new insights into the understanding of new brain treatments from the perspective of stem cell technology especially regarding regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the serious psychiatric disorder. Paeoniflorin (PF) produces the antidepressant-like properties. However, few studies are concerned about its anti-PTSD-like effects and mechanisms. To investigate these, the single prolonged stress (SPS) model was utilized. PTSD-like behavioral deficits in rats after exposure to SPS were improved by PF (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.), evidenced by blocking increased freezing time in contextual fear paradigm (CFP) and increased time and entries in open arms in elevated plus maze (EPM) test without affecting the locomotor activity in open field (OF) test. We also found that increased levels of corticosterone (Cort), corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) after exposure to SPS were reversed by PF (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.) in serum, respectively. Moreover, the decreased levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were reversed by PF (10 and 20 mg/kg, i.p.), respectively. Background: To date, liver congestion is one of the most significant clinical diseases. However, few studies have profoundly investigated the development, pathology, and prognosis of the important problems associated with acute hepatic congestion.Aims: To explore the value of noninvasive two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) for assessing acute liver congestion in an animal model.Methods: Six healthy Bama mini-pigs were used for this research and randomly divided into the experimental group and control group. We measured the basal liver stiffness (LS) by 2D-SWE and then clamped the inferior vena cava (IVC). LS was measured after 1, 5, 10, and 15 min. We reopened the IVC of experimental group pigs and detected the LS again. All pigs were killed and obtained for a pathological microscopic examination.Results: LS was distinctly increased from 7.03 ± 0.48 to 17.18 ± 3.40 kPa (p < 0.01) within 15 min and reversed to almost normal values of 7.59 ± 0.77 kPa (p < 0.01) within 5 min. In addition, two-dimensional ultrasound images demonstrated the interesting phenomenon of spontaneous echo contrast. Most importantly, the pathologic results of experimental group pigs showed the central veins of the hepatic lobules and hepatic sinusoids were enlarged and filled with numerous erythrocytes; central lobular hepatocytic necrosis and edema were noted.Conclusions: In conclusion, 2D-SWE is a valuable, reliable, and quantitative approach to successfully assess acute liver congestion, and it is well consistent with histopathological characteristics. Regulated activity of SLC6A3, which encodes the human dopamine transporter (DAT), contributes to diseases such as substance abuse disorders (SUDs); however, the exact transcription mechanism remains poorly understood. Here, we used a common genetic variant of the gene, intron 1 DNP1B sequence, as bait to screen and clone a new transcriptional activity, AZI23′UTR, for SLC6A3. AZI23′UTR is a 3′ untranslated region (3′UTR) of the human 5-Azacytidine Induced 2 gene (AZI2) but appeared to be transcribed independently of AZI2. Found to be present in both human cell nuclei and dopamine neurons, this RNA was shown to downregulate promoter activity through a variant-dependent mechanism in vitro. Both reduced RNA density ratio of AZI23′UTR/AZI2 and increased DAT mRNA levels were found in ethanol-naive alcohol-preferring rats. Secondary analysis of dbGaP GWAS datasets (Genome-Wide Association Studies based on the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes) revealed significant interactions between regions upstream of AZI23′UTR and SLC6A3 in SUDs. γ-Secretase has been a therapeutical target for its key role in cleaving APP to generate β-amyloid (Aβ), the primary constituents of senile plaques and a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. Recently, γ-secretase-associating proteins showed promising role in specifically modulating APP processing while sparing Notch signaling; however, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. A co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) coupled with mass spectrometry proteomic assay for Presenilin1 (PS1, the catalytic subunit of γ-secretase) was firstly conducted to find more γ-secretase-associating proteins. Gene ontology analysis of these results identified Rab21 as a potential PS1 interacting protein, and the interaction between them was validated by reciprocal Co-IP and immunofluorescence assay. Then, molecular and biochemical methods were used to investigate the effect of Rab21 on APP processing. Results showed that overexpression of Rab21 enhanced Aβ generation, while silencing of Rab21 reduced the accumulation of Aβ, which resulted due to change in γ-secretase activity rather than α- or β-secretase. Finally, we demonstrated that Rab21 had no effect on γ-secretase complex synthesis or metabolism but enhanced PS1 endocytosis and translocation to late endosome/lysosome. In conclusion, we identified a novel γ-secretase-associating protein Rab21 and illustrate that Rab21 promotes γ-secretase internalization and translocation to late endosome/lysosome. Moreover, silencing of Rab21 decreases the γ-secretase activity in APP processing thus production of Aβ. All these results open new gateways towards the understanding of γ-secretase-associating proteins in APP processing and make inhibition of Rab21 a promising strategy for AD therapy. Dendrite growth of alkali metal anodes limited their lifetime for charge/discharge cycling. Here, we report near-perfect anodes of lithium, sodium, and potassium metals achieved by electrochemical polishing, which removes microscopic defects and creates ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase layers at metal surfaces for providing a homogeneous environment. Precise characterizations by AFM force probing with corroborative in-depth XPS profile analysis reveal that the ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase can be designed to have alternating inorganic-rich and organic-rich/mixed multi-layered structure, which offers mechanical property of coupled rigidity and elasticity. The polished metal anodes exhibit significantly enhanced cycling stability, specifically the lithium anodes can cycle for over 200 times at a real current density of 2mA cm–2 with 100% depth of discharge. Our work illustrates that an ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase may be robust enough to suppress dendrite growth and thus serve as an initial layer for further improved protection of alkali metal anodes. Objective: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)-based therapy via G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) GLP-1R, to attenuate hyperglycemia in critical care has attracted great attention. However, the exaggerated inflammation by GLP-1R agonist, Exendin-4, in a mouse model of burn injury was quite unexpected. Recent studies found that GPCR might elicit proinflammatory effects by switching from Gαs to Gαi signaling in the immune system. Thus, we aimed to investigate the possible Gαs to Gαi switch in GLP-1R signaling in monocyte following burn injury. Materials and methods: Splenic monocytes from sham and burn mice 24 h following burn injury were treated with consecutive doses of Exendin-4 alone or in combination with an inhibitor of Gαi signaling (pertussis toxin, PTX), or a blocker of protein kinase A (H89). Cell viability was assessed by CCK-8, and the supernatant was collected for cytokine measurement by ELISA. Intracellular cAMP level, phosphorylated PKA activity, and nuclear NF-κB p65 were determined by ELISA, ERK1/2 activation was analyzed by Western blot. The expression of GLP-1R downstream molecules, Gαs, Gαi and G-protein coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) were examined by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. Results: Exendin-4 could inhibit the viability of monocyte from sham rather than burn mice. Unexpectedly, it could also reduce TNF-α secretion from sham monocyte while increase it from burn monocyte. The increased secretion of TNF-α by Exendin-4 from burn monocyte could be reversed by pretreatment of PTX or H89. Accordingly, Exendin-4 could stimulates cAMP production dose dependently from sham instead of burn monocyte. However, the blunt cAMP production from burn monocyte was further suppressed by pretreatment of PTX or H89 after 6-h incubation. Nevertheless, phosphorylated PKA activity was significantly increased by low dose of Exendin-4 in sham monocyte, by contrast, it was enhanced by high dose of Exendin-4 in burn monocyte after 1-h incubation. Following Exendin-4 treatment for 2 h ex vivo, total nuclear NF-κB and phosphorylated NF-κB activity, as well as cytoplasmic pERK1/2 expressions were reduced in sham monocyte, however, only pERK1/2 was increased by Exendin-4 in burn monocytes. Moreover, reduced expressions of GLP-1R, GRK-2 and Gαs in contrast with increased expression of Gαi were identified in burn monocyte relative to sham monocyte. Conclusions: This study presents an unexpected proinflammatory switch from Gαs to Gαi signaling in burn monocyte, which promotes ERK1/2 and NF-κB activation and the downstream TNF-α secretion. Research over the years has shown that causes of Alzheimer’s disease are not well understood, but over the past years, the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in the developing memory formation either under pathological or physiological conditions has become clear. The term epigenetics represents the heredity of changes in phenotype that are independent of altered DNA sequences. Different studies validated that cytosine methylation of genomic DNA decreases with age in different tissues of mammals, and therefore, the role of epigenetic factors in developing neurological disorders in aging has been under focus. In this review, we summarized and reviewed the involvement of different epigenetic mechanisms especially the DNA methylation in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD), familial Alzheimer’s disease (FAD), and autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s disease (ADAD). Down to the minutest of details, we tried to discuss the methylation patterns like mitochondrial DNA methylation and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) methylation. Additionally, we mentioned some therapeutic approaches related to epigenetics, which could provide a potential cure for AD. Moreover, we reviewed some recent studies that validate DNA methylation as a potential biomarker and its role in AD. We hope that this review will provide new insights into the understanding of AD pathogenesis from the epigenetic perspective especially from the perspective of DNA methylation. We consider two independent models which consist of an ion interacting with laser field. The influence of the initial degree of entanglement of the two ions on the entanglement of internal states of ions, ion-ion vibration entanglement and ion vibration-ion vibration entanglement is discussed. We examine entanglement via concurrence and negativity, and find that the sum of entanglement between two ions and entanglement between two ion vibration states is conserved. It is shown that entanglement sudden death (ESD) can happen and the less the value of initial degree of entanglement of the two ions is, the longer the ESD time cost. The initial degree of entanglement of the two ions has no influence on the trends of the evolution of entanglement. The less value of the initial degree of entanglement of the two ions is, the smaller the peak value of the entanglement achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel Mn-Fe-Mg- and Mn-Fe-Ce-loaded alumina (Mn-Fe-Mg/Al2O3 and Mn-Fe-Ce/Al2O3) were developed to catalytically ozonate reverse osmosis concentrates generated from petroleum refinery wastewaters (PRW-ROC). Highly dispersed 100-300-nm deposits of composite multivalent metal oxides of Mn (Mn2+, Mn3+, and Mn4+), Fe (Fe2+ and Fe3+) and Mg (Mg2+), or Ce (Ce4+) were achieved on Al2O3 supports. The developed Mn-Fe-Mg/Al2O3 and Mn-Fe-Ce/Al2O3 exhibited higher catalytic activity during the ozonation of PRW-ROC than Mn-Fe/Al2O3, Mn/Al2O3, Fe/Al2O3, and Al2O3. Chemical oxygen demand removal by Mn-Fe-Mg/Al2O3- or Mn- Fe-Ce/Al2O3-catalyzed ozonation increased by 23.9% and 23.2%, respectively, in comparison with single ozonation. Mn-Fe-Mg/Al2O3 and Mn-Fe-Ce/Al2O3 notably promoted .OH generation and .OH-mediated oxidation. The cytoskeleton not only provides structure, it is an active component of cell function, and in several neurodegenerative disorders, there is evidence of cytoskeletal collapse. Cytoskeletal proteins have been specifically implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD), where degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons is the hallmark, but in which many factors may determine the resilience of DA neurons during aging and stress. Here we report that the human Microtubule Actin Cross-linking Factor 1 gene ( MACF1), a downstream target of PD biochemical pathways, was significantly associated with PD in 713 nuclear families. A significant allelic association between PD and rs12118033, with P = 0.0098, was observed, and a P < 0.03 was observed in the association analysis by both a trend test and an allelic test. We further observed that it is the MACF1b isoform, not the MACF1a isoform, which is expressed in DA neurons from six human postmortem brains. In a Caenorhabditis elegans system, used to explore the effect of altered MACF1b on neurons, knockdown or knockout of the MACF1b orthologue vab-10 resulted in the selective loss of DA neurons, which validated MACF1's risk candidacy in PD.
