This study aims to investigate the effects of the Jetpul mind game, that developed by researchers, on attention deficit and hyperactivity symptoms in primary and secondary school students. Utilizing a causal-comparative research method, the study assesses the potential impacts of this game on children exhibiting ADHD symptoms and its feasibility as a complementary method in education. Methodologically, a pre-test- post-test matched control group experimental design was employed, involving a total of 100 students from primary and secondary education levels as the sample group. D2 Attention Test was used as a data collection tool in the study. The findings indicate that the Jetpul intelligence game positively influences students' attention levels, psychomotor speed, selective attention, and concentration abilities. Furthermore, this research highlights the potential of the Jetpul intelligence game as a supportive tool in the treatment of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. It remains unknown which factors influence how brain disconnectivity derived from White Matter Hyperintensity (WMH) lesions leads to psychomotor speed dysfunction, one of the earliest and most common cognitive manifestations in the cerebral Small Vessel Disease (cSVD) population. While the burden of WMH has been strongly linked to psychomotor speed performance, the effect that different locations and volumes of WMH may have on cSVD-related cognitive impairment remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore (1) whether global WMH, deep WMH (DWMH), and periventricular (PVWMH) volumes display different psychomotor speed associations; (2) whether tract-specific WMH volume shows stronger cognitive associations compared with global measures of WMH volume; (3) whether specific patterns of WMH location lead to different degrees of disconnectivity. Using the BCBToolkit, we investigated which pattern of distribution and which locations of WMH lesion result in impaired psychomotor speed in a well-characterized sample (n = 195) of cSVD patients without dementia. Two key findings emerge from our study. First, global (and not tract-specific) measures of WMH volume were associated with psychomotor speed performance. Second, disconnection maps revealed the involvement of callosal tracts, association and projection fibers, and frontal and parietal cortical brain areas related to psychomotor speed, while the lesion location influenced such associations. Evidence suggests impairment in aspects of cognitive function in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Direct effects of raised testosterone levels associated with PCOS are a potential mechanism. We aimed to explore the relationship between testosterone levels and cognitive functioning in women. Women with a range of testosterone levels, including women with PCOS, were recruited. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were measured by self-report. Participants underwent a comprehensive battery of cognitive tests assessing psychomotor speed, visuospatial learning and memory, verbal learning and memory, and executive function. Free testosterone serum levels were assessed. All measures were completed at the same time point. Correlation analysis (Spearman's Rho) was used to explore associations between free testosterone and cognitive test variables. Eighty-one women were recruited, with 40 meeting diagnostic criteria for PCOS. Free testosterone was normally distributed, with significant overlap between women with PCOS and controls. Mean depressive and anxiety symptoms were in the mild range. Higher free testosterone levels were significantly correlated with poorer performance on measures assessing psychomotor speed and visuospatial learning. These significant correlations remained after adjusting for confounders (premorbid verbal IQ, depressive, and anxiety symptoms). Higher free testosterone levels in women were associated with poorer cognitive function, specifically psychomotor speed and visuospatial learning. Women with PCOS and raised free testosterone levels may experience impairment in these aspects of cognitive function which are not accounted for by mood or anxiety symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To investigate the concordance between walking (WS) and psychomotor speed (PS), correlates of both tasks, and their capacity to predict mortality in the elderly. Design, setting and participants: Seven-year cohort study of 1,365 community-dwelling subjects aged 65-95 years, participating in the Bordeaux sample of the Three City Study, a French prospective cohort designed to evaluate the risk of cognitive decline attributable to vascular risk factors. Measurements: Participants completed a battery of cognitive assessments including time to complete Trail Making Test A used as a PS measure, and a measure of WS. Socio-demographic determinants, co-morbidities, functional and cognitive evaluation, and incident mortality were taken into account. Results: Mean age was 75.7 (SD ± 5.4) years. WS and TMT-A speed have very low concordance (kappa coefficient=.05). The correlates of each measure were different: mostly clinical co-morbidities for WS, and mostly cognition and function for TMT-A speed. However, TMT-A speed and WS are both independent predictors of death after seven years of follow-up. Conclusion: WS and TMT-A speed could be considered as two different dimensions of age-related slowness, but both performances were associated with higher risk of mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clinical diagnosis of Huntington's disease (HD) is based on the motor symptoms, although these can be preceded by cognitive and behavioral changes. Biomarker studies have shown that structural imaging modalities are useful biomarkers of HD onset, while functional imaging measures have been studied less often for this purpose. Our aim was to investigate the combined value of 18-fluorodesoxyglucose (FDG)-PET and cognitive measures as biomarkers of HD onset. Twenty-two premanifest mutation carriers of HD (PMCs) and 11 healthy controls were assessed twice with FDG-PET scan, neurological and neuropsychological assessments over a 2-year interval. Seventeen PMCs had an additional third neurological evaluation, 10 years after baseline. Disease load was defined as the probability of motor onset within 5 years. Metabolism in putamen, caudate and pallidum of PMCs was significantly lower than that of controls, at both assessments. Almost half of the PMCs had converted to manifest HD 10 years later and all converters had low average or abnormal putaminal metabolism at 2 year follow-up. In contrast, all PMCs with normal putaminal metabolism at 2 year follow-up remained premanifest during the following 8 years. Furthermore, glucose metabolism of putamen explained a substantial part of the variance in disease load. A composite score of psychomotor tests contributed significantly to the prediction model as well, while cognitive performance was comparable for PMCs and controls. We conclude that in future clinical trials a combination of psychomotor tests and putaminal glucose metabolism may be used to identify PMCs close to motor onset of HD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are considerable differences in cognition between individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) which might be explained by the theory of cognitive reserve. This theory states that premorbid factors, such as high intellectual capacities, provide a buffer against cognitive impairments. This study determines whether cognitive reserve influences cognition in PD. Forty-eight PD patients were included. All were assessed with two proxies of cognitive reserve, tests of cognition and both measures of disease characteristic and symptoms of depression. After accounting for age, gender, disease characteristics and depression, cognitive reserve was an independent predictor of cognitive performance. In conclusion, cognitive reserve influences cognition in PD, i.e. PD patients with a high premorbid intellectual ability show fewer cognitive impairments than patients with a low premorbid ability. This indicates that cognitive reserve needs to be taken into account when monitoring the evolution of cognition in PD, however, verification of results on a larger patient sample would be desirable. Verbal fluency tests (VFT) are often used to assess executive functioning in Parkinson's disease (PD). Various cognitive functions may, however, impair performance on VFT. Furthermore, since PD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, it is also not clear whether deficits on VFT reflect impairments in the same cognitive functions throughout the different disease stages. This study will investigate what is measured with VFT in PD, in particular at different disease stages. Eighty-eight PD patients and 65 healthy participants, matched for age, gender, and education, were included. All were assessed with semantic and phonemic VFT and tests assessing executive functions, memory, and psychomotor speed. Mild and moderate PD patients did not differ in the number of words generated on both VFT. However, mild and moderate PD patients differed significantly with regard to the size of the largest cluster and the number of intra-dimensional shifts on phonemic VFT. Furthermore, at the mild disease stages, psychomotor speed predicted the performance on both VFT; whereas at the moderate stages of the disease, cognitive flexibility and psychomotor speed predicted the performance on both VFT. In conclusion, different cognitive functions underlie the performances of PD patients at different stages of the disease on semantic and phonemic VFT. Impairments in VFT, therefore, do not necessarily represent a specific deficit of executive functioning in patients with PD but should rather be interpreted in the context of disease severity and dysfunctions in other domains of cognition. Although the incidence of HIV in the United States is higher among men compared to women, the global proportion of women versus men who are infected has been approximately 50% since the late 1990s. Women have been under-represented in neuropsychological studies of HIV. A small number of studies have reported a significantly higher prevalence of neurocognitive impairment among HIV+ women compared to HIV− controls regardless of symptom status and with or without an AIDS diagnosis. Impairment was most evident on psychomotor tasks. The risk of neuropsychological impairment was increased among HIV+ women not on antiretroviral therapy. Age and depressive symptoms also increase neurocognitive risk. New neurocognitive studies of ovarian steroid hormones, PTSD and other psychiatric conditions are critical for addressing potential female-specific aspects of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder. Endogenous benzodiazepine-like substances are thought to play a role in the development of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Ten patients with sub-clinical or latent hepatic encephalopathy (LHE) and ten normal controls were cognitively assessed pre- and post-infusion of 0.2 mg of the benzodiazepine (BZ) antagonist flumazenil in a placebo-controlled, cross-over, double-blind design. Flumazenil infusion resulted in a significant improvement in simple reaction time in patients, but not in controls. Saline infusion had no effect on any of the cognitive measures in either group. Flumazenil appeared to have a particular enhancing effect on the cognitive, as opposed to the motor, component of the reaction time task. This finding supports the view that the benzodiazepine/GABA system is implicated in the bradyphrenia that is characteristic of chronic liver disease, even before hepatic encephalopathy is apparent. We conclude that benzodiazepine receptor antagonism may improve cognitive function, particularly speed of information processing, in patients with latent hepatic encephalopathy. Several studies have reported a decline in intelligence and cognitive functions in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Other investigators, however, have found no intellectual impairment in these children. Fifty-one long-term survivors of ALL, having been treated according to the protocols of the BFM Study Group from 1970 to 1979, were assessed retrospectively using neurophysical methods. The results were compared with those obtained from 30 patients with other malignancies, who had received neither radiation therapy to the central nervous system (CRT) nor any methotrexate during chemotherapy. Additionally, neurological examinations and cranial computed tomography (CCT) were performed. neuropsychological examinations included verbal functions, intelligence (performance), psychomotor speed, motor skills and sensory integration. The results of verbal tests and the IQs, tested by nonspeed-related measures, were within normal limits in both groups. About one-third of all patients showed mild disturbances of psychomotor speed and motor skills. Children with leukemia had lower scores than those with solid tumors for nearly all tasks, but only tests for sensory integration revealed significant differences between former ALL patients and tumor patients. Furthermore, the following results were obtained related to different therapeutic modalities: The higher total radiation doses had been during CRT (maximum 24 GY), the more neuropsychological functions were impaired, particularly motor accuracy and sensory integration. These disturbances improved with the length of survival. Widening of subarachnoidal space was found in 33% of the CCT obtained. There was no correlation between the intellectual functions of the survivors and the CCT abnormalities.
