Predation is a crucial ecosystem function, transferring nutrients and shaping the abundance and diversity of animals within communities. On coral reefs, fish-fish predation (i.e., piscivory) is arguably one of the best known ecosystem functions, yet is also one of the least well quantified. Recent work has suggested that the prey capture performance of piscivorous fishes may differ when feeding on actively swimming vs. cryptobenthic fish prey. However, the extent of this difference remains unquantified. Our goal, therefore, was to conduct performance-based experiments comparing piscivorous fishes feeding on two different fish prey types, namely, actively swimming vs. cryptobenthic prey (i.e., prey sitting on the benthos). While predators were able to immediately detect actively swimming prey, when feeding on cryptobenthic prey, predators were generally unable to detect the prey until it moved. Both focal predators, the grabber Pseudochromis fuscus and the engulfer Pterois volitans were less successful at capturing cryptobenthic prey (mean 28% probability of capture), compared to actively swimming prey (85%). Overall, our study demonstrates the heterogeneous nature of fish predation on coral reefs, and the challenges of feeding on different prey functional groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within the predator–prey relationship, predator behavior is less studied. Even in natural populations, it shows great diversity, and the factors influencing this are even less known. Among these factors, the personality type of the individual, (including exploration, and neophilia) and the practice significantly influence the success of adapting to a changing environment and switching to new prey types. In the present study, we investigated the first five consecutive foraging trials on live fish prey in naïve pikeperch individuals, which previously consumed or refused pelleted food. We hypothesized that individuals which were willing to consume alternative (pelleted) food would also show higher foraging success on living prey and that the practice would influence the learning process. Our results show that the timing of prey detection is influenced by exploratory behavior, the latency of the first attack by the aptitude for consuming pellets, and both traits by the individual's practice. Foraging animals must contend with fluctuating environmental variables that affect foraging success, including conditions like wind noise, which could diminish the usefulness of particular sensory modes. Although the documented impact of anthropogenic noise on animal behavior has become clear, there is limited research on natural noise and its potential influence on mammalian behavior. We investigated foraging behavior in the myrmecophagous bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), a species known to rely predominantly on hearing for prey detection. For a year, we monitored the foraging behavior of 18 bat-eared foxes from a habituated population in South Africa, amidst varying wind speeds (0–15.5 km/h). In contrast to expectations, foraging rates did not generally decline with increasing wind speed, except for foraging rate outside termite patches in fall. Furthermore, wind speed had little correlation with time spent in patches. In winter, however, we observed an increase in foraging rate with increasing wind speed both within and outside patches. At the observed wind speeds, these acoustically driven insectivores continue to forage effectively despite potentially distracting or masking noises. With anthropogenic noise producing sound across a broader frequency range, it is important to examine the responses of these canids to artificial sources of acoustic disturbance as well. Limited attention constrains predators from engaging in cognitively demanding tasks such as searching for cryptic prey at the same time as remaining vigilant towards threats. Since finite attention can result in negative correlations between foraging and vigilance, the tendency of individual predators to focus attention on searching for cryptic prey may be correlated with other behavioural traits which reflect risk-reward trade-offs, such as consistent inter-individual variation in boldness (a personality trait describing risk-taking, defined in this study as the time taken to leave a refuge). We investigated the importance of personality in prey detection by comparing inter-individual variation in the response of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to conspicuous and cryptic prey. Fish were slower to attack cryptic prey than conspicuous prey, consistent with cryptic prey being harder to detect. Despite the greater challenge involved in detecting cryptic prey, inter-individual variation in the time taken to detect prey was similar in the cryptic and conspicuous prey treatments, and was uncorrelated with boldness, which was repeatable between individuals. We also observed a positive association between the rate of attack on conspicuous prey and whether individual fish attacked cryptic prey in other trials. Our findings suggest that boldness is not related to prey detection or attention in this context. Instead, consistent differences in motivation once exploration has begun between individual predators may explain inter-individual variation in the time taken to attack both prey cryptic and conspicuous prey. Significance statement: Using an experimental approach to manipulate the conspicuousness of prey, we show that individual fish consistently differ in their rates of attacking prey. This demonstrates that fish show "personality variation" in predatory behaviour, but these inter-individual differences were not related to the boldness of each fish (their tendency to engage in risky behaviours). In aquatic ecosystems many biotic and abiotic factors influence predator–prey interactions directly or indirectly. In ephemeral pools the water level can change drastically, which may have a significant impact on predator–prey interactions, especially where ecological niches of predator(s) and prey comprise different layers of the water column. We tested the ability of benthic predatory Hoplobatrachus crassus tadpoles to detect their prey, tadpoles of the bottom-dweller Fejervarya syhadrensis and column-feeder Microhyla nilphamariensis, using visual and chemical cues, and the effect of a change in water level on the survival of the prey when exposed to H. crassus tadpoles. H. crassus tadpoles detected their prey using visual cues but not chemical ones (kairomones). Under the high-water-level condition, more M. nilphamariensis tadpoles survived than F. syhadrensis tadpoles. Under the low-water-level condition, predation levels did not differ for the two prey species. These results imply that H. crassus tadpoles hunt bottom-dwelling prey tadpoles using visual signals. M. nilphamariensis tadpoles escape the risk of predation from the bottom-dwelling predator mainly due to their ecological niche (the water column). These results showed that a change in water level can shift predation pressure between tadpoles residing in the different layers of a water column and determine the outcome of predator–prey interactions. Eavesdropping predators sometimes show preferences for certain prey signal variants, yet the ultimate and proximate reasons for such preferences are often unclear. The fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus, eavesdrops on the advertisement calls of male túngara frogs, Physalaemus pustulosus, and shows a marked preference for complex (adorned) calls over simple (non-adorned) calls. We hypothesized that this preference stems from perceptual biases in the sensory and/or cognitive systems of T. cirrhosus. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of preference experiments in which we presented bats with various modified simple calls, each altered to possess one of the acoustic properties that distinguish complex calls from simple calls. We reasoned that if perceptual bias accounts for the bat's preference for complex calls, then a novel stimulus with similar acoustic properties to the complex call should be attractive as well (i.e., the preference should be permissive). Except for weak evidence suggesting that the longer duration of complex calls could contribute to their greater attractiveness to T. cirrhosus, we did not find any indication that perceptual biases account for this eavesdropper preference. Instead, we suggest that T. cirrhosus developed their preference for call complexity because eavesdropping on complex calls provides greater fitness benefits than eavesdropping on simple calls, for example, because eavesdropping on complex calls may increase probability of prey capture and/or lead to more profitable food patches. In a predator-prey interaction, the fitnesses of the predator and the prey depend on their abilities to recognize each other, a process that may involve different sensory modalities. Squamate reptiles are highly dependent on chemical senses for such recognition, and here we explored the ability of a generalist saurophagous snake, Philodryas chamissonis, to discriminate scents of two congeneric and sympatric lizard prey species, Liolaemus nitidus and L. chiliensis. A generalist saurophagous snake might just be sensitive to lizard scents in general, and if so, no discrimination between prey species is expected. However, these lizards use different substrates; L. nitidus basks on rocks, whereas L. chiliensis mainly basks on bushes and rarely on ground. The snake P. chamissonis basks on ground and rocks, and rarely on bushes. Therefore, if the rate of encounter affects the ability to recognize prey, we predict that P. chamissonis would show prey discrimination because scents of L. chiliensis may be encountered less frequently in its habitat. Results showed that the snake had a refined discrimination of lizard prey, reducing tongue flick rate and movements in response to scents from the common prey scents, L. nitidus. We also studied the ability of L. chiliensis to detect the snake and found that snake scents triggered a reduction in activity. Two sand-dwelling cichlids from Lake Malawi ( Aulonocara stuartgranti, Tramitichromis sp.) that feed on benthic invertebrates, but have different lateral line phenotypes, use lateral line and/or visual cues to detect prey under light versus dark conditions. The current study examined how ecologically relevant variation in light intensity [0-800 lux (lx)] influences detection of prey (mobile, immobile) in each species by analyzing six behavioral parameters. Both species fed at light intensities ≥1 lx and trends in behavior among light intensities were informative. However, prey type and/or time of day (but not light intensity) predicted all four parameters analyzed with generalized linear mixed models in A. stuartgranti, whereas the interaction of light intensity and time of day predicted three of these parameters in Tramitichromis sp. Data suggest that the critical light intensity is 1-12 lx for both species, that the integration of visual and lateral line input explains differences in detection of mobile and immobile prey and behavioral changes at the transition from 1 to 0 lx in A. stuartgranti, and that Tramitichromis sp. likely uses binocular vision to locate prey. Drift-feeding fish are challenged to discriminate between prey and similar-sized particles of debris, which are ubiquitous even in clear-water streams. Spending time and energy pursuing debris mistaken as prey could affect fish growth and the fitness potential of different foraging strategies. Our goal was to determine the extent to which debris influences drift-feeding fish in clear water under low-flow conditions when the distracting effect of debris should be at a minimum. We used high-definition video to measure the reactions of drift-feeding juvenile Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) to natural debris and prey in situ in the Chena River, Alaska. Among all potential food items fish pursued, 52 % were captured and quickly expelled from the mouth, 39 % were visually inspected but not captured, and only 9 % were ingested. Foraging attempt rate was only moderately correlated with ingestion rate (Kendall's τ = 0.55), raising concerns about the common use of foraging attempts as a presumed index of foraging success. The total time fish spent handling debris increased linearly with foraging attempt rate and ranged between 4 and 25 % of total foraging time among observed groups. Our results help motivate a revised theoretical view of drift feeding that emphasizes prey detection and discrimination, incorporating ideas from signal detection theory and the study of visual attention in cognitive ecology. We discuss how these ideas could lead to better explanations and predictions of the spatial behavior, prey selection, and energy intake of drift-feeding fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pliosaurs were a long-lived, ubiquitous group of Mesozoic marine predators attaining large body sizes (up to 12 m). Despite much being known about their ecology and behaviour, the mechanisms they adopted for prey detection have been poorly investigated and represent a mystery to date. Complex neurovascular systems in many vertebrate rostra have evolved for prey detection. However, information on the occurrence of such systems in fossil taxa is extremely limited because of poor preservation potential. The neurovascular complex from the snout of an exceptionally well-preserved pliosaur from the Kimmeridgian (Late Jurassic, c. 170 Myr ago) of Weymouth Bay (Dorset, UK) is described here for the first time. Using computed tomography (CT) scans, the extensive bifurcating neurovascular channels could be traced through the rostrum to both the teeth and the foramina on the dorsal and lateral surface of the snout. The structures on the surface of the skull and the high concentrations of peripheral rami suggest that this could be a sensory system, perhaps similar to crocodile pressure receptors or shark electroreceptors. Many animals use olfaction to find food and avoid predators, and must negotiate environments containing odors of varying compositions, strengths, and ages to distinguish useful cues from background noise. Temporal variation in odor cues (i.e., 'freshness') seems an obvious way that animals could distinguish cues, yet there is little experimental evidence for this phenomenon. Fresh cues provide a more reliable indicator of donor presence than aged cues, but we hypothesize that the benefits of responding to aged cues depend on whether the cue indicates the proximity of a predator or a potential meal. As prey cannot remain eternally risk averse in response to predator odor, we predict that antipredator responses should diminish as predator cues age. In contrast, animals searching for food should investigate aged prey cues if investigation costs are sufficiently low and the potential benefit (a meal) sufficiently high; thus, we predict that predators will maintain interest in aged prey cues. We tested these ideas using free-ranging rats ( Rattus spp.) in two separate experiments; firstly assessing giving-up densities in the presence of predator odor, and secondly examining investigation rates of prey odors. As predicted, giving-up densities dropped once predator odor had aged, but investigation rates remained similar for aged and fresh prey odor. Thus, rats used temporal variation in odor cues to evaluate the cost-benefit relationship of responding to predator and prey odors. Very little is known about how nocturnal primates find their food. Here we studied the sensory basis of food perception in wild-caught gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) in Madagascar. Mouse lemurs feed primarily on fruit and arthropods. We established a set of behavioral experiments to assess food detection in wild-born, field-experienced mouse lemurs in short-term captivity. Specifically, we investigated whether they use visual, auditory, and motion cues to find and to localize prey arthropods and further whether olfactory cues are sufficient for finding fruit. Visual cues from motionless arthropod dummies were not sufficient to allow reliable detection of prey in choice experiments, nor did they trigger prey capture behavior when presented on the feeding platform. In contrast, visual motion cues from moving prey dummies attracted their attention. Behavioral observations and experiments with live and recorded insect rustling sounds indicated that the lemurs make use of prey-generated acoustic cues for foraging. Both visual motion cues and acoustic prey stimuli on their own were sufficient to trigger approach and capture behavior in the mouse lemurs. For the detection of fruit, choice experiments showed that olfactory information was sufficient for mouse lemurs to find a piece of banana. Our study provides the first experimental data on the sensory ecology of food detection in mouse lemurs. Further research is necessary to address the role of sensory ecology for food selection and possibly for niche differentiation between sympatric Microcebus species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coexisting animal species frequently differ in resource use in at least one niche dimension and thus avoid competition. While a range of morphological differences that lead to differentiation in animals' mechanical access to food have been identified, the role of sensory differences in within-guild niche differentiation has received less attention. We tested the hypothesis that differences in sensory access to prey contribute to resource partitioning between potentially competing species using two sympatric, similar-sized, congeneric bat species as a model system. Nursery colonies of Natterer's bat ( Myotis nattereri) and Bechstein's bat ( Myotis bechsteinii) roost in bat boxes in the same orchard and forage in forests and orchards nearby. In observations and behavioural experiments with freshly captured M. bechsteinii, we showed that individuals are able to hunt using prey-generated sound alone. In contrast, M. nattereri rarely uses prey-generated sound, but instead is able to find prey by echolocation very close to vegetation. In accordance with these behavioural data, we showed that M. bechsteinii has significantly larger ears than M. nattereri, providing it with superior detection and localization abilities for relatively low-frequency prey rustling sounds. We hypothesized that these differences in sensory ecology of the two syntopic, congeneric species would contribute to resource partitioning, so that M. bechsteinii would find more noisy prey taxa, possibly hidden in vegetation, by listening for prey sounds, while M. nattereri would have better access to still prey using echolocation or associative learning. Analysis of faecal samples collected on the same nights from bat boxes occupied by each species corroborated this prediction. The diets of the two species differed significantly, reflecting their different prey perception techniques and thereby supporting the hypothesis that differences in sensory ecology contribute to niche differentiation. The literature suggests that in familiar laboratory settings, Indian false vampire bats (Megaderma lyra, family Megadermatidae) locate terrestrial prey with and without emitting echolocation calls in the dark and cease echolocating when simulated moonlit conditions presumably allow the use of vision. More recent laboratory-based research suggests thatM. lyrauses echolocation throughout attacks but at emission rates much lower than those of other gleaning bats. We present data from wild-caught bats hunting for and capturing prey in unfamiliar conditions mimicking natural situations. By varying light level and substrate complexity we demonstrated that huntingM. lyraalways emit echolocation calls and that emission patterns are the same regardless of light/substrate condition and similar to those of other wild-caught gleaning bats. Therefore, echoic information appears necessary for this species when hunting in unfamiliar situations, while, in the context of past research, echolocation may be supplanted by vision, spatial memory or both in familiar spaces. The 71 species of horseshoe bat (genus Rhinolophus) use echolocation calls with long constant-frequency (CF) components to detect and localize fluttering insects which they seize in aerial captures or glean from foliage. Here we describe ground-gleaning as an additional prey-capture strategy for horseshoe bats. This study presents the first record and experimental evidence for ground-gleaning in the little-studied Blasius’ horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus blasii). The gleaning bouts in a flight tent included landing, quadrupedal walking and take-off from the ground. The bats emitted echolocation calls continuously during all phases of prey capture. Both spontaneously and in a choice experiment, all six individuals attacked only fluttering insects and never motionless prey. These data suggest that R. blasii performs ground-gleaning largely by relying on the same prey-detection strategy and echolocation behaviour that it and other horseshoe bats use for aerial hawking. We also studied the Mediterranean horseshoe bat (R. euryale) in the flight tent. All four individuals never gleaned prey from the ground, though they appeared to be well able to detect fluttering moths on the ground. It is not known yet whether ground-gleaning plays a role in Mehely’s horseshoe bat (R. mehelyi). In a performance test, we measured the ability of these three European species of “middle-sized” horseshoe bats (R. euryale, R. mehelyi and R. blasii) to take-off from the ground. All were able to take flight even in a confined space; i.e. the willingness to ground-glean in R. blasii is not related to a superior take-off performance. In contrast to ground-gleaning bats of other phylogenetic lineages, R. blasii appears not to be a specialist, but rather shows a remarkable behavioural flexibility in prey-capture strategies and abilities. We suggest that the key innovation of CF echolocation paired with behavioural flexibility in foraging strategies might explain the evolutionary success of Rhinolophus as the second largest genus of bat. Most research on environmental effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has focused on its potential negative consequences. However, natural UVR can also be beneficial to living organisms (e.g., vitamin D synthesis, UV vision, germicide activity). UV vision has been demonstrated in a variety of animals including several invertebrates and vertebrates. Juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, has a retinal photoreceptor, which is sensitive to UVR between 360 and 370 nm. Among other functions, UV vision has been proposed to contribute to prey detection by enhancing the contrast between the prey and its background. We performed a series of feeding experiments with juvenile rainbow trout and several zooplankters as prey. The fish were allowed to feed either under full solar radiation, or under solar radiation from which the UV component had been removed using a long-pass cut off filter. We found that the removal of UV wavelengths had no effect on the number of prey eaten or on the preference for particular food items. This is contrary to published studies reporting prey detection enhancement mediated by UV vision in rainbow trout. This disparity in the results may be due to our use of natural radiation instead of artificial UV sources, in which the visible component is poorly represented. Although our results do not disproof the presence of UV vision in juvenile rainbow trout, they do cast doubts about its significance in enhancing feeding performance in a natural light environment. The mechanosensory lateral line is a distributed, hair-cell based system which detects the water flow regime at the surface of the fish. Superficial neuromasts densely scattered over the surface of some cave fish detect the pattern of flow over the surface of the body and are important in rheotactic behaviors and perhaps in the localization of small vibrating sources. Canal neuromasts are very likely also involved in the detection of small planktonic prey, but seem also to play an essential role in replacing vision as the major sense by which blind cave-fish perceive their surroundings. The flow-field that exists around a gliding fish is perturbed by objects in the immediate vicinity, these perturbations are detected by the lateral line system. In this way the fish can build up a ‘picture’ of its environment, a process that has been called active hydrodynamic imaging. None of the lateral line behaviors exhibited by blind cave fish are necessarily exclusive to these species, but there is some evidence that their lateral line capabilities are enhanced with respect to their sighted relatives. Physiological data indicate that a 3-compartment model appropriately represents ingestion, assimilation, and accumulation of somatic and reproductive tissue by an aquatic invertebrate predator. A secondary production model calibrated to growth and respiration data is used to constrain the model equations. Inverse solution methods are used to estimate rate constants for digestion and for net accrual of tissue by growing animals at different temperatures. Predicted time to 50% maximum digestion matches well with the empirical rate of digestion of prey enzymes in the predator gut. Model-derived digestion rates are consistent with the assimilation rate constant obtained by independent radiotracer methods, and with experimental detection time for prey enzymes. During their seasonal runs in the Okavango and other freshwater bodies in southern Africa, the sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, specialises on the bulldog, Marcusenius macrolepidotus, as its main prey. We examined whether the catfish can locate bulldogs by detecting their pulse-type electric organ discharges (EODs). The electrosensory threshold for single-cycle, monopolar square-wave pulses was exceedingly low (down to 13 µVp–p/cm for 4-ms pulses) in trained, food-rewarded sharptooth catfish ( n=4), confirming the results of Lissmann and Machin who were, however, unable to identify a biological function. Other stimulus pulse waveforms (single-cycle, monopolar as well as bipolar sine-wave pulses) were also effective stimuli according to their spectral low-frequency energy contents (0– 30 Hz). Male bulldogs display an EOD pulse approximately 10× the duration of female EODs (≈0.5 ms). The C. gariepinus threshold for field-recorded playbacks of a male bulldog EOD (of long duration) was 103 µVp–p/cm, whereas the brief female and juvenile EODs were not detected (using intensities of natural EODs). EODs of other mormyrids were detected when either monopolar or of long duration. Signal source amplitude increased linearly with standard length (SL) in bulldogs. Signal reach, as calculated from signal source amplitude and receiver sensitivity, is up to 150 cm for a large male bulldog (SL 27.5 cm), and 83 cm for a male that has just turned sexually mature (SL 12.6 cm). Therefore, most bulldogs eaten by catfish are probably male, in agreement with the size distribution of bulldogs found in catfish stomachs. These results suggest that sharptooth catfish rely heavily on their acute electrical sense during hunting, and an important function for electroreception in an African catfish has been identified. Echolocating greater horseshoe bats ( Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) detect insects by concentrating on the characteristic amplitude- and frequency modulation pattern fluttering insects impose on the returning echoes. This study shows that horseshoe bats can also further analyse insect echoes and thus recognize and categorize the kind of insect they are echolocating. Four greater horseshoe bats were trained in a twoalternative forced-choice procedure to choose the echo of one particular insect species turning its side towards the bat (Fig. 1). The bats were able to discriminate with over 90% correct choices between the reward-positive echo and the echoes of other insect species all fluttering with exactly the same wingbeat rate (Fig. 4). When the angular orientation of the reward-positive insect was changed (Fig. 2), the bats still preferred these unknown echoes over echoes from other insect species (Fig. 5) without any further training. Because the untrained bats did not show any prey preference, this indicates that the bats were able to perform an aspect-anglein-dependent classification of insects. Finally we tested what parameters in the echo were responsible for species recognition. It turned out that the bats especially used the small echo-modulations in between glints as a source of information (Fig. 7). Neither the amplitudenor the frequencymodulation of the echoes alone was sufficient for recognition of the insect species (Fig. 8). The activity of single lateral line afferent neurons was chronically recorded in free-swimming toadfish. CNS efferent neurons, known to be inhibitory upon peripheral lateral line mechanoreceptors, were activated by stroboscopic and natural visual stimuli. Discharges from irregular-type afferents caused by water movement relative to lateral line neuromasts decreased following stroboscopic stimulation of unrestrained and behaving fish. Visual presentation of natural prey also decreased mechanically evoked afferent firing rates. We show that visual stimuli can activate the efferent system and function in the peripheral processing of mechanical stimuli to the lateral line in biologically relevant contexts. The visual threshold for food-location in the antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki, is compared with light conditions and food availability under the ice. Even under the most favourable conditions for vision, P. borchgrevinki is operating close to its visual threshold and must often depend on non-visual mechanisms of prey detection.
