Bioethanol is expected to have a major contribution to transportation fuel consumption; hence, environmental analyses are crucial tools to evaluate its environmental performances. In this paper, a life cycle assessment is carried out to study the environmental performance of a bioethanol production system from Tunisian waste dates. The life cycle foreground data were derived from process simulation, while the background data were provided by the Ecoinvent 3.3 database. The impact assessment method applied is the ReCiPe midpoint (H). Seven environmental impact categories are discussed in detail in the interpretation section: global warming, acidification, eutrophication, agricultural land occupation, water depletion, cumulative energy, and cumulative exergy demands. The results indicate that 1 MJ of bioethanol produced from waste dates generates approximately 0.07 kg CO2-eq, which appears comparable with second-generation bioethanol production. One MJ of bioethanol requires approximately 1.087 MJ-eq of primary energy consumption of which 1.065 MJ is nonrenewable. The electric power generation process is the main contributor to most of the environmental impact categories (process hot spot). Nickel hyperaccumulation in Blepharidium guatemalense Standl. (Rubiaceae) was found in the tropical forests of south-eastern Mexico. This study aimed to document the geographic extent of nickel hyperaccumulation in this species, to understand its process of hyperaccumulation and to explore nickel distribution within the tissues of this plant. To accomplish these objectives, a complete non-destructive elemental screening of herbarium specimens was performed with a hand-held X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Besides, rhizosphere soils and plant tissues were collected in Mexico and analyzed for physical–chemical parameters. Finally, elemental distribution maps of nickel and other elements in plant tissues were obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. This study revealed that Blepharidium guatemalense is distributed throughout Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche, reaching the maximum nickel concentration in leaves (4.3 wt%) followed by roots and seeds (2.0 wt%) and bark (1.8 wt%). Simultaneous hyperaccumulation of cobalt and nickel was found in 15% of the herbarium specimens. Blepharidium guatemalense has uncommon re-distribution mechanisms via phloem since this tissue is the highest nickel-enriched from all parts of the plant (from roots to leaves). A high total nickel (mean of 610 µg g−1) was found in rhizosphere soils even though no evidence of ophiolite emplacement in that area has been reported. Blepharidium guatemalense represents the first hypernickelophore (> 1 wt% Ni) to be reported as growing in soils that are neither ultramafic nor enriched by anthropogenic pollutants. To rapidly monitor the surface water quality in terms of organic pollution of an industrial river undergoing restoration, optical methods (UV-visible spectrometry and fluorescence) were applied in parallel to classical physical-chemical analyses. UV-visible spectra were analyzed using the maximum of the second derivative at 225 nm (related to nitrates), specific absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA), and the spectral slope between 275 and 295 nm ( S ) (related to the aromaticity and molecular weight of dissolved organic carbon). The synchronous fluorescence spectra (wavelength difference = 50 nm) exhibited a high variability in the composition of dissolved organic material between the upstream and downstream sections and also versus time. The principal components analysis of the entire set of synchronous fluorescence spectra helped to define three river sections with different pollution characteristics. Spectral decomposition was applied to the two most upstream sections: five fluorophores, classical in rivers impacted by domestic sewage and related to protein-like ( λ = 280 nm) and humic-like fluorescence (M-type with λ ≈ 305-310 nm and C-type with λ ≥ 335 nm), were identified. The irregular shape of the synchronous fluorescence spectra in the most downstream section is likely due to organic pollutants of industrial origin; however, their variability and the complexity of the spectra did not allow the further elucidation of their nature. Antibiotic resistance is a threat to human and animal health worldwide, and key measures are required to reduce the risks posed by antibiotic resistance genes that occur in the environment. These measures include the identification of critical points of control, the development of reliable surveillance and risk assessment procedures, and the implementation of technological solutions that can prevent environmental contamination with antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes. In this Opinion article, we discuss the main knowledge gaps, the future research needs and the policy and management options that should be prioritized to tackle antibiotic resistance in the environment. To facilitate the mapping of pollution fluxes under different flow conditions when a limited number of gauging stations are available, a method relying on geographic data was developed to estimate the mean daily stream discharge at each sampling station. It has been tested on a rural river watershed that is located in northeast France (Madon River). The stretch of 100 km is equipped with three gauging stations. Surface water samples were collected at 30 stations under different flow conditions. In a participatory research project, samples were also collected by school children at one of the stations (once a week during the school year over a 2-year period). Dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen species were measured for all samples. These data illustrate the variation in the pollution in the river that is associated with agricultural activities and discharges of untreated wastewater. This method was used to obtain localized points of nutrient discharge, to identify the zones that favor nutrient removal, and to propose remediation work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last 20 years, increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations have been observed in several rivers and lakes in Europe. This increase has reduced the quality of the aquatic environment. In this study, UV-vis spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy with a difference of 50 nm between the excitation and emission (SF50) were used to characterize the DOC in a rural river (Madon River). The specific absorbance index at 254 nm (SUVA) which is related to the aromaticity of DOC was extracted from UV-vis spectra, whose maximum of the second derivative (occurring near 225 nm) is related to nitrates. SF50 spectra which are characterized by well-defined peaks indicated large spatial and temporal variations. Two methods were used to analyze and compare these spectra. The first method was based on the decomposition of the SF50 spectra into four Gauss functions: B1 (related to tryptophan-like fluorescence), B2 and B3 (related to humic substances), and B4 (related to chlorophyll-like substances). The second method was principal components analysis (PCA), which results yielded three principal components that accounted for 95 % of the variance. Although PCA enables the consideration of the spectra without making assumptions regarding the number of fluorophores, the results from the decomposition in Gauss function were easier to interpret. Everyday domestic activity is a significant source of water pollution. The presence of six household micropollutants in an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was assessed in wastewater and sludge. A multi-target analytical method was developed for the quantification of ibuprofen, erythromycin, ofloxacin, 4-nonylphenol, 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol (triclosan), and sucralose. The micropollutants were extracted from the liquid and solid phases and their concentrations were determined by LC-MS/MS. The efficiency of micropollutants' removal within a conventional activated sludge process was assessed. From 50 % to 90 % of ibuprofen and erythromycin was removed from the wastewater liquid phase. Their removal can be attributed to biological degradation as they were not found adsorbed on the outlet sludge. Ofloxacin and triclosan were removed from the liquid phase with similar efficiencies; however, they were adsorbed on the sludge, so it was not possible to determine their removal mechanism (whether biodegradation or displacement to solid phase/sequestration). Sucralose was not removed from wastewater (3 μg L in inlet and outlet liquid phase) and not adsorbed on the sludge. 4-Nonylphenol concentrations were sometimes higher in the WWTP outlet water; this may relate to the degradation of alkylphenol ethoxylates in the wastewater treatment process. 4-Nonylphenol was always present in the outlet sludge. The storage of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) in extended filamentous bacteria from activated sludge was monitored by Sudan Black staining: PHB granules were blue in the reddish filaments counterstained by safranin. By quantitative image analysis of colour images grabbed on an optical microscope, the distribution of the PHB loading of the extended filaments was estimated by determination of the proportion of blue pixels of their skeleton. The method was applied for different feed compositions to demonstrate its ability to monitor the PHB synthesis and storage capacity of filamentous bacteria in mixed cultures. Fast PHB storage, within a few hours, could be observed with acetate-based feeding solutions but the storage rate decreased with more complex feeds (meat extract based feed, wastewater). An automated image analysis method has been developed for the monitoring of the Gram-staining characteristics of filamentous bacteria in activated sludge. The binary method of pixel classification agreed with manual estimation (level of correlation of 0.9 for Gram-positive bacteria). Its robustness has been assessed by repeatability tests. The kinetics of ethanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate and fusel alcohols during alcoholic fermentations on cane molasses by Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been obtained via an in-situ gas membrane sensor connected to a gas chromatograph. Various operation parameters have been investigated such as inoculum rate, molasses concentration, operation mode (batch, fed-batch). The modification of fusel alcohols kinetics in response to addition of amino acids has been studied as well as the assimilation of two intermediary aldehydes (isovaleraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde) in the fusel alcohol synthesis pathway. Gas membrane sensors, connected to a gas chromatography, have been tested in fermentation on complex media of industrial interest. Selectivity, sensitivity and reliability have been assessed: the calibration on fermentation medium is recommended. The use of such a sensor is demonstrated in the study of the kinetics of batch and fed-batch alcoholic fermentations on beet molasses. The production and assimilation of acetate during the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on glucose and ethanol have been studied. Acetate inhibits growth and causes decreased yields on both substrates. The usual respiratory quotient based policy for fed batch control cannot be used for highly acetate producing yeast because of compensation between O over-consumption (due to acetate) and CO over-production (due to ethanol) in case of glucose over-feeding.
