Different approaches exist to describe the seismic triggering of rockfalls. Statistical approaches rely on the analysis of local terrain properties and their empirical correlation with observed rockfalls. Conversely, deterministic, or physically based approaches, rely on the modeling of individual trajectories of boulders set in motion by seismic shaking. They require different data and allow various interpretations and applications of their results. Here, we present a new method for earthquake-triggered rockfall scenario assessment adopting ground shaking estimates, produced in near real-time by a seismological monitoring network. Its key inputs are the locations of likely initiation points of rockfall trajectories, namely, rockfall sources, obtained by statistical analysis of digital topography. In the model, ground shaking maps corresponding to a specific earthquake suppress the probability of activation of sources at locations with low ground shaking while enhancing that in areas close to the epicenter. Rockfall trajectories are calculated from the probabilistic source map by three-dimensional kinematic modeling using the software STONE. We apply the method to the 1976 MI = 6.5 Friuli earthquake, for which an inventory of seismically-triggered rockfalls exists. We suggest that using peak ground acceleration as a modulating parameter to suppress/enhance rockfall source probability, the model reasonably reproduces observations. Results allow a preliminary impact evaluation before field observations become available. We suggest that the framework may be suitable for rapid rockfall impact assessment as soon as ground-shaking estimates (empirical or numerical models) are available after a seismic event. In the neo-deterministic seismic hazard assessment (NDSHA) evaluation, great-earthquake-prone areas (GEPAs) play an important role in defining the 'controlling earthquakes' or 'scenario earthquakes'. When considering great earthquakes, their finite rupture attributes, which contribute to determine the strong ground motions and intensities, have to be taken into account. For continental earthquakes in China, the great earthquakes are located mainly within the boundary zones of the 'tectonic blocks'. The 'tectonic block' model indicates the focal mechanisms and some finite rupture attributes of the great earthquakes within the boundary zones. Accordingly, in the NDSHA for China, it is both necessary and feasible for the GEPAs to consider the finite rupture attributes of great earthquakes. The Sichuan-Yunnan border in southwest China has been taken as an example to naturally develop the originally used circular shape of GEPAs into one with more degrees-of-freedom, better reflecting the possible rupture processes of the considered earthquakes. We propose an interdisciplinary approach to Time-dependent Neo-deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (T-NDSHA) for the China Seismic Experimental Site (CSES) at a one-year time scale. The approach is based on the Neo-deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (NDSHA), with the "controlling earthquakes" (or "scenario earthquakes") as defined by the Annual Consultation on the Likelihood of Earthquakes. The Annual Consultation, organized by the China Earthquake Administration (CEA), has been an interdisciplinary practice since 1972, with the output of "alert regions" with increased probabilities of strong earthquakes, featured by real forward forecasting characteristics. We take the year 2014, in which there were four strong earthquakes in the CSES region, as a showcase example to illustrate how the T-NDSHA may be conducted and evaluated. Considering the alert regions provided by the Annual Consultation, the expected strong ground motion parameters and the macroseismic intensities are mapped by the NDSHA algorithms considering the regional Earth structures and the focal mechanisms of historical earthquakes. The estimated intensities are then compared with the observed intensities produced by the actual earthquakes. Evaluation of the performance of such annual seismic hazard assessment is performed using a confusion matrix and Molchan error diagram, respectively, indicating that the combination of the NDSHA and the annual forecasting provides the emergency preparation with a ready-to-use mapping of expected intensities which outperforms random forecasting. The proposed approach provides a substantial improvement to the Annual Consultation, and it can naturally be applied to other regions where intermediate-term middle-range earthquake forecasts are available and where the need for emergency preparation are duly considered. An adequate characterization of the temporal features of background seismicity, namely after removal of temporally and spatially clustered events (e.g. aftershocks), is a key element in several studies aimed at earthquake forecasting and seismic hazard assessment. In order to investigate the features of background seismicity component, we analyse the rate of background events, that is the rate of main/independent earthquakes as identified by Nearest Neighbour (NN) and Stochastic Declustering (SD) methods. The use of two different declustering methods, which are based on diverse statistical and physical assumptions, allows us to assess whether the identified features depend on the specific definition of background events. In this study, we carry out an in depth analysis of the time changes of background seismicity rate in Northeastern Italy, by means of continuous-time Hidden Markov Models, a stochastic tool that can be used to assess heterogeneity in the temporal pattern of seismicity rates. Specifically, we aim at understanding if the analysed time series can be better described by a homogeneous Poisson model, with unique constant rate, or by a switched Poisson model (i.e. linked to some systematic changes in earthquakes occurrence rates) or whether a basically different model is required. The analysis performed based on Markov modulated Poisson process, and according to Bayesian Information Criterion, shows that a switched Poisson process with three states is the best model describing the background rate identified by SD and NN approaches. The capability of adopted methodology in identifying seismicity rate changes, as well as the sensitivity of the method against the minimum magnitude threshold of analysis, have been verified by applying the method to synthetic catalogues with known properties, namely Poissonian time series with different rates prescribed in specific time intervals. Earthquakes cannot be predicted with ultimate precision, so that the progressive reduction of the prediction uncertainty in space and time is an evergreen and challenging task, both from the scientific point of view for the intrinsic complexity of seismic phenomenon and for its high societal relevance. To this aim, algorithms (like CN, M8 and M8S) based on objective recognition of seismicity patterns have been already tested for some decades for intermediate-term middle-range prediction of strong earthquakes above a pre-assigned magnitude threshold. Here, moving from some preliminary ideas, we propose an integrated approach to earthquake prediction, based on the synergy of high-density geodetic observations and seismological information, defining a new paradigm for time dependent hazard assessment scenarios. Through a wider and more refined retrospective analysis, duly involving the accuracy analysis of the newly available geodetic results, space–time precursory features are highlighted within ground velocities and seismicity, analyzing the 2016–2017 seismic crisis in Central Italy and the 2012 Emilia sequence. Overall, it is demonstrated that the proper integration of seismological and geodetic information can achieve what here is called intermediate-term narrow-range earthquake prediction. The extent of the alarmed areas, identified for the strong earthquakes by earthquake prediction algorithms based on seismicity patterns, can be significantly reduced from linear dimensions of a few hundred to a few tens of kilometers, leading to an improved more specific implementation of low-key preventive actions, like those recommended by UNESCO as early as in 1991. Earthquakes cannot be predicted with precision, but algorithms exist for intermediate-term middle-range prediction of main shocks above a pre-assigned threshold, based on seismicity patterns. Few years ago, a first attempt was made in the framework of project SISMA, funded by Italian Space Agency, to jointly use seismological tools, like CN algorithm and scenario earthquakes, and geodetic methods and techniques, like GPS and SAR monitoring, to effectively constrain priority areas where to concentrate prevention and seismic risk mitigation. We present a further development of integration of seismological and geodetic information, clearly showing the contribution of geodesy to the understanding and prediction of earthquakes. As a relevant application, the seismic crisis that started in Central Italy in August 2016 with the Amatrice earthquake and still going on is considered in a retrospective analysis of both GPS and SAR data. Differently from the much more common approach, here, GPS data are not used to estimate the standard 2D velocity and strain field in the area, but to reconstruct the velocity and strain pattern along transects, which are properly oriented according to the a priori information about the known tectonic setting. SAR data related to the Amatrice earthquake coseismic displacements are here used as independent check of the GPS results. Overall, the analysis of the available geodetic data indicates that it is possible to highlight the velocity variation and the related strain accumulation in the area of Amatrice event, within the area alarmed by CN since November 1st, 2012. The considered counter examples, across CN alarmed and not-alarmed areas, do not show any spatial acceleration localized trend, comparable to the one well defined along the Amatrice transect. Therefore, we show that the combined analysis of the results of intermediate-term middle-range earthquake prediction algorithms, like CN, with those from the processing of adequately dense and permanent GNSS network data, possibly complemented by a continuous InSAR tracking, may allow the routine highlight in advance of the strain accumulation. Current computational resources and physical knowledge of the seismic wave generation and propagation processes allow for reliable numerical and analytical models of waveform generation and propagation. From the simulation of ground motion, it is easy to extract the desired earthquake hazard parameters. Accordingly, a scenario-based approach to seismic hazard assessment has been developed, namely the neo-deterministic seismic hazard assessment (NDSHA), which allows for a wide range of possible seismic sources to be used in the definition of reliable scenarios by means of realistic waveforms modelling. Such reliable and comprehensive characterization of expected earthquake ground motion is essential to improve building codes, particularly for the protection of critical infrastructures and for land use planning. Parvez et al. (Geophys J Int 155:489-508, 2003) published the first ever neo-deterministic seismic hazard map of India by computing synthetic seismograms with input data set consisting of structural models, seismogenic zones, focal mechanisms and earthquake catalogues. As described in Panza et al. (Adv Geophys 53:93-165, 2012), the NDSHA methodology evolved with respect to the original formulation used by Parvez et al. (Geophys J Int 155:489-508, 2003): the computer codes were improved to better fit the need of producing realistic ground shaking maps and ground shaking scenarios, at different scale levels, exploiting the most significant pertinent progresses in data acquisition and modelling. Accordingly, the present study supplies a revised NDSHA map for India. The seismic hazard, expressed in terms of maximum displacement (Dmax), maximum velocity (Vmax) and design ground acceleration (DGA), has been extracted from the synthetic signals and mapped on a regular grid over the studied territory. In this study, a long-term forecasting model is proposed to evaluate the probabilities of forthcoming M ≥ 5.0 earthquakes on a 0.2° grid for an area including the Iranian plateau. The model is built basically from smoothing the locations of preceding events, assuming a spatially heterogeneous and temporally homogeneous Poisson point process for seismicity. In order to calculate the expectations, the space distribution, from adaptively smoothed seismicity, has been scaled in time and magnitude by average number of events over a 5-year forecasting horizon and a tapered magnitude distribution, respectively. The model has been adjusted and applied considering two earthquake datasets: a regional unified catalog (MB14) and a global catalog (ISC). Only the events with M ≥ 4.5 have been retained from the datasets, based on preliminary completeness data analysis. A set of experiments has been carried out, testing different options in the model application, and the average probability gains for target earthquakes have been estimated. By optimizing the model parameters, which leads to increase of the predictive power of the model, it is shown that a declustered catalog has an advantage over a non-declustered one, and a low-magnitude threshold of a learning catalog can be preferred to a larger one. In order to examine the significance of the model results at 95% confidence level, a set of retrospective tests, namely, the L test, the N test, the R test, and the error diagram test, has been performed considering 13 target time windows. The error diagram test shows that the forecast results, obtained for both the two input catalogs, mostly fall outside the 5% critical region that is related to results from a random guess. The L test and the N test could not reject the model for most of the time intervals (i.e. ~85 and ~62% of times for the ISC and MB14 forecasts, respectively). Furthermore, after backwards extending the time span of the learning catalogs and repeating the L test and N test for the new dataset as well as the R test, it is observed that a low-quality longer catalog does not essentially improve the predictive skill of the model than a high-quality shorter one. The performed retrospective tests suggest that the model yields some statistically acceptable efficiency for the studied area, at least with respect to the spatially uniform reference model. Thus, the considered model may provide useful information as a reference for more refined time-independent models and also in combination with long-term indications from seismic hazard maps; this is particularly relevant in areas characterized by a high level of predicted ground shaking and high forecast rate. Uranium groundwater anomalies, observed before the L'Aquila earthquake (April 6th, 2009) and before the seismic swarm, which occurred in the second half of 2010, represent a key geochemical signal of a progressive increase of deep fluids fluxes at middle-lower crustal levels associated with the geodynamics of the earthquake. In this paper, temporal variations of uranium groundwater are studied in association with the seismic pattern around Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS-INFN). The normalized seismic energy release and the number of earthquakes are analyzed in detail by means of monthly sliding time windows. Rigorous and objective testing of seismic hazard assessments against the real seismic activity must become the necessary precondition for any responsible seismic risk estimation. Because seismic hazard maps seek to predict the shaking that would actually occur, the reference hazard maps for the Italian seismic code, obtained by probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA), and the alternative ground shaking maps based on the neo-deterministic approach (NDSHA), are cross-compared and tested against the real seismicity for the territory of Italy. The comparison between predicted intensities and those reported for past earthquakes shows that models generally provide rather conservative estimates, except for PGA with 10 % probability of being exceeded in 50 years, which underestimates the largest earthquakes. In terms of efficiency in predicting ground shaking, measured accounting for the rate of underestimated events and for the territorial extent of areas characterized by high seismic hazard, the NDSHA maps appear to outscore the PSHA ones. An innovative approach to seismic hazard assessment is illustrated that, based on the available knowledge of the physical properties of the Earth structure and of seismic sources, on geodetic observations, as well as on the geophysical forward modeling, allows for a time-dependent definition of the seismic input. According to the proposed approach, a fully formalized system integrating Earth Observation data and new advanced methods in seismological and geophysical data analysis is currently under development in the framework of the Pilot Project SISMA, funded by the Italian Space Agency. The synergic use of geodetic Earth Observation data (EO) and Geophysical Forward Modeling deformation maps at the national scale complements the space- and time-dependent information provided by real-time monitoring of seismic flow (performed by means of the earthquake prediction algorithms CN and M8S) and permits the identification and routine updating of alerted areas. At the local spatial scale (tens of km) of the seismogenic nodes identified by pattern-recognition analysis, both GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) techniques, coupled with expressly developed models for interseismic phase, allow us to retrieve the deformation style and stress evolution within the seismogenic areas. The displacement fields obtained from EO data provide the input for the geophysical modeling, which eventually permits to indicate whether a specific fault is in a 'critical state.' The scenarios of expected ground motion (shakemaps) associated with the alerted areas are then defined by means of full waveforms modeling, based on the possibility to compute synthetic seismograms by the modal summation technique (neo-deterministic hazard assessment). In this way, a set of deterministic scenarios of ground motion, which refer to the time interval when a strong event is likely to occur within the alerted area, can be defined both at national and at local scale. The considered integrated approach opens new routes in understanding the dynamics of fault zones as well as in modeling the expected ground motion. The SISMA system, in fact, provides tools for establishing warning criteria based on deterministic and rigorous forward geophysical models and hence allows for a well-controlled real-time prospective testing and validation of the proposed methodology over the Italian territory. The proposed approach complements the traditional probabilistic approach for seismic hazard estimates, since it supplies routinely updated information useful in assigning priorities for timely mitigation actions and hence it is particularly relevant to Civil Defense purposes. Pattern informatics (PI) algorithm, which was introduced at the beginning of past decade, uses instrumental earthquake catalogs to investigate the time-dependent rate of seismicity in the study area and, based on the information from past events, calculates the probabilities for the occurrence of future large earthquakes. The main measure in this method is the number of events above a specified magnitude threshold M that is counted over a gridded area. PI has been applied in several regions of the world and different variants of the method have been developed over the past decade. Hence, the problem of formally evaluating and comparing the performances of the different PI variants needs to be addressed from an operational perspective, in order to identify the preferred application scheme and as well as to improve the performances of the method. In this study, PI is applied for the first time to the retrospective analysis of the earthquake catalogs of Iran and Italy, so as to check whether this method could forecast the past large events in these two regions with different level of data completeness and complex seismotectonic setting. The original PI algorithm and one of its modified variants, as well as the relative intensity (RI) model, are used to check the stability and statistical significance of the obtained results. In order to assess and compare the obtained results, the performances of the different PI variants are analyzed considering different evaluation strategies, which turn out to provide significantly different scores even for the same algorithm variant. We show that a critical point in the assessment of the obtained results is related with the definition and quantification of the space uncertainty of the issued forecasts, that is, with the extent of the territory where large earthquakes are to be expected. Accordingly, we emphasize the need for an appropriate definition of the evaluation strategies, clearly and unambiguously indicating the area where a large earthquake has to be expected. The study shows that, with respect to application in Iran and Italy, the performances of PI algorithm (both original and modified variants) are highly dependent on the selected evaluation strategy and do not provide better information than the simple RI model, which does not account for temporal properties of seismicity evolution. The overall performances can be improved by introducing specific thresholds that discard the less active cells; however, being based on some posterior optimization, a rigorous prospective testing is required to assess the forecasting capability of the method. We perform a comparative analysis of regional and global earthquake catalogs currently available for the territory of Italy. We consider: (a) instrumental seismic catalogs provided by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Roma (INGV) for earthquake forecasting experiment in Italy within the Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability (CSEP); (b) Global Hypocenters' Data provided by the USGS/NEIC, which is currently used in the real-time earthquake prediction experiment by CN and M8S algorithms in Italy, and (c) seismological Bulletin provided by the International Seismological Centre (ISC). We discuss advantages and shortcomings of these catalogs in the context of intermediate-term middle-range earthquake prediction problem in Italy, including the possibility of the catalog's combined or integrated use. Magnitude errors in the catalog can distort statistics of success-to-failure scoring and eventually falsify testing results. Uranium groundwater anomalies, which were observed in cataclastic rocks crossing the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory before the L'Aquila earthquake (April 6th, 2009), have been studied versus radium and tritium contents. The radionuclide analysis supports the role of endogenic fluid dynamics for uranium content in groundwater rather than percolation processes, due to meteoric events occurring above the water table of the Gran Sasso aquifer. The uranium anomalies represent a key geochemical signal of a progressive increase of deep fluids fluxes at middle-lower crustal levels associated with the geodynamics of the earthquake. Moreover, the uranium represents a more precise strain-meter than radon as its presence can be modulated during the preparation phase of the earthquake, and only successively released by microfracturing during the main shock and aftershocks. The operational and decision-making problems related to earthquake forecast/prediction and seismic hazard assessment are nowadays a matter of significant debate, particularly on account of the very unsatisfactory global performance of Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment at the occurence of most of the recent destructive earthquakes. While it is recognized that operational tools must demonstrate their capability in anticipating large earthquakes and the related ground shaking by rigorous verification and validation process, only few methods proved effective so far. In view of the inherent uncertainties in predicting predictable, the usefulness of any forecast/prediction method can then be judged taking into account the wide range of possible mitigation actions of different levels (from increased preparedness to evacuation). This paper aims to open a debate and complement the Summary and Recommendations by the International Commission on Earthquake Forecasting, established after the earthquake in L'Aquila ( M = 6.3, 6 April 2009). The issues related with the definition, validation, and possible use of forecasting/prediction methodologies, are addressed with special emphasis on existing operational practice in Italy. n integrated neo-deterministic approach to seismic hazard assessment has been developed that combines different pattern recognition techniques, designed for the space-time identification of impending strong earthquakes, with algorithms for the realistic modeling of seismic ground motion. The integrated approach allows for a time-dependent definition of the seismic input, through the routine updating of earthquake predictions. The scenarios of expected ground motion, associated with the alarmed areas, are defined by means of full waveform modeling. A set of neo-deterministic scenarios of ground motion is defined at regional and local scales, thus providing a prioritization tool for timely preparedness and mitigation actions. Constraints about the space and time of occurrence of the impending strong earthquakes are provided by three formally defined and globally tested algorithms, which have been developed according to a pattern recognition scheme. Two algorithms, namely CN and M8, are routinely used for intermediate-term middle-range earthquake predictions, while a third algorithm allows for the identification of the areas prone to large events. These independent procedures have been combined to better constrain the alarmed area. The pattern recognition of earthquake-prone areas does not belong to the family of earthquake prediction algorithms since it does not provide any information about the time of occurrence of the expected earthquakes. Nevertheless, it can be considered as the termless zero-approximation, which restrains the alerted areas (e.g. defined by CN or M8) to the more precise potential location of large events. Italy is the only region of moderate seismic activity where the two different prediction algorithms, CN and M8S (i.e. a spatially stabilized variant of M8), are applied simultaneously and a real-time test of predictions, for earthquakes with magnitude larger than a given threshold (namely 5.4 and 5.6 for CN algorithm, and 5.5 for M8S algorithm) has been ongoing since 2003. The application of the CN to the Adriatic region, which is relevant for seismic hazard assessment in the northeastern part of the Italian territory, is also discussed. Examples of neo-deterministic scenarios are provided, at regional and local scale and for the cities of Trieste and Nimis (Friuli Venezia Giulia region), where the knowledge of the local geological conditions permitted a detailed evaluation of the expected ground motion. We study the parameters A, B, and C of the Unified Scaling Law for Earthquakes (USLE) in the Central Mediterranean area and Alpine region on the basis of a variable space and time scale approach. We make use of regional and local earthquake catalogues. Accordingly, we investigate three different scales: the scale of the Central Mediterranean and Alpine region spanning different geological domains, the scale of the Alps focusing on a single geological entity, and the scale of an active fault system at the junction between the southeastern Alps and the external Dinarides in Northeastern Italy and Western Slovenia. Maps based on the varied time and location scales are compared with each other. The observed temporal variability of the A, B, C coefficients indicates significant changes of seismic activity at the time scales of a few decades. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use all the data available for long-term seismic hazard assessment in conjunction with a real-time monitoring of these characteristics for possible evaluation of time-dependent risk at the intermediate-term scales of a few years. The confirmed fractal nature of earthquakes and their distribution in space implies that the traditional estimations of seismic hazard for cities and urban agglomerations are usually underestimated. The degree of underestimation by traditional methods of seismic risk at a city is illustrated by providing estimates of hazard and related personal hazard, which are oversimplified examples of seismic risk assessment accounting for fractal properties of earthquakes in the major cities of the Central Mediterranean and Alpine region. Estimates of seismic hazard obtained using the neo-deterministic approach (NDSHA) and the probabilistic approach (PSHA) are compared for the Italian territory. The NDSHA provides values larger than those given by the PSHA in areas where large earthquakes are observed and in areas identified as prone to large earthquakes, but lower values in low-seismicity areas. These differences suggest the adoption of the flexible, robust and physically sound NDSHA approach to overcome the proven shortcomings of PSHA, thus allowing for a reliable seismic hazard estimation, especially for those areas characterized by a prolonged quiescence, i.e. in tectonically active sites where events of only moderate size have occurred in historical times. The article discusses various reports published within the issue, including one by Asano and Iwata on prediction of inland crustal earthquakes, one by Ruiz and colleagues on earthquake asperities in the Chilean subduction zone, and one on the technique for evaluation of predicted ground motions.

new revised earthquake catalogue for Eastern Algeria [22°N-38°N–4°E-9.5°E], from 419 to 2008, has been compiled as a starting point for a catalogue dealing with the whole country. The re-evaluation is based on a critical method, and formal criteria are adopted in the parameterization of the earthquake catalogue. Two digital versions are produced: (a) a basic version, presented here, including all the compiled data, the authors of each quoted parameter and the quality rank of the macroseismic information; (b) a second version, obtained after removing doubtful events and parameters, is produced in order to carry out statistical analyses. The newly compiled earthquake catalogue provides a more reliable picture of the seismicity in Eastern Algeria than the previous ones as shown by the comparison of the recent catalogues over the common territory and time span. The aim of the present work is to compile and update a catalogue of the instrumentally recorded earthquakes in Egypt, with uniform and homogeneous source parameters as required for the analysis of seismicity and seismic hazard assessment. This in turn requires a detailed analysis and comparison of the properties of different available sources, including the distribution of events with time, the magnitude completeness, and the scaling relations between different kinds of magnitude reported by different agencies. The observational data cover the time interval 1900–2004 and an area between 22°–33.5° N and 25°–36° E. The linear regressions between various magnitude types have been evaluated for different magnitude ranges. Using the best linear relationship determined for each available pair of magnitudes, as well as those identified between the magnitudes and the seismic moment, we convert the different magnitude types into moment magnitudes M W, through a multi-step conversion process. Analysis of the catalogue completeness, based on the M W thus estimated, allows us to identify two different time intervals with homogeneous properties. The first one (1900–1984) appears to be complete for M W ≥ 4.5, while the second one (1985–2004) can be considered complete for magnitudes M W ≥ 3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The numerical block-model of the lithosphere dynamics is used to simulate seismicity in Italy and its surroundings, based on the available structural and geodynamics information. The purpose of the study is to understand which are the tectonic processes that control the main features of the observed seismicity and the kinematics of the region. The influence of the rheology of the fault systems is studied as well. The model we use differs from other modeling approaches in that it simulates earthquakes and hence it possibly relates to seismicity and geodynamics. The model provides an effective capability to include the set of documented constraints supplied by widely available earthquake catalogs. This is done by means of the comparison of the GR relation, of the focal mechanisms and of the space distribution for observed and computed seismicity. The region is modeled as a system of perfectly rigid blocks, separated by infinitely thin fault planes, in viscoelastic interaction between themselves and with the underlying medium. The movement of the boundary blocks and of the underlying medium determines the motion of the blocks. The synthetic seismicity obtained with the defined block-model is similar to the observed one for the most seismically active areas. A linear frequency-magnitude (FM) relation (Gutenberg-Richter law) is obtained for synthetic earthquakes; the slope ( b-value) of the FM plot appears larger for the synthetic seismicity than for the observed one. Nevertheless, the b-value is essentially larger in northern and central Italy than that in southern Italy, both in the model and in the observations. The analysis of the source mechanisms of the synthetic earthquakes shows a good agreement with the observations. In the model normal faulting is typical for the Apennines, the eastern edge of Sicily and the Calabrian arc, while reverse faulting takes place at the northwestern boundary of the Adriatic Sea, in the southern Alps and along the eastern edge of the Adria, along the Dinarides. The model correctly reproduces the extension zone along the Apennines and the contraction zone along the northwestern boundary of the Adriatic Sea; the counter-clockwise rotation of the Adria is mimed. The resulting movements of the blocks are in overall agreement with GPS (Global Positioning System) observations. The results of the modeling experiments suggest that the main features of dynamics and seismicity in the central Mediterranean region cannot be satisfactorily explained as a consequence of Africa and Eurasia convergence only; the passive subduction in the Calabrian arc and the different rheology of faults are essential as well. The possibility of intermediate-term earthquake prediction at Mt. Vesuvius by means of the CN algorithm is explored. CN was originally designed to identify the Times of Increased Probability (TIPs) for the occurrence of strong tectonic earthquakes, with magnitude M ≥ M 0, within a region a priori delimited. Here the CN algorithm is applied, for the first time, to the analysis of volcanic seismicity. The earthquakes recorded at Mt. Vesuvius during the period from February 1972 to June 2004 are considered, and the magnitude threshold M 0 selecting the events to be predicted is varied within the range: 3.0–3.3. Satisfactory prediction results are obtained, by retrospective analysis, when a time scaling is introduced. In particular, when the length of the time windows is reduced by a factor 2.5–3, with respect to the standard version of CN algorithm, more than 90% of the events with M ≥ M 0 occur within the TIP intervals, with TIPs occupying about 30% of the total time considered. The control experiment ``Seismic History'' demonstrates the stability of the obtained results and indicates that the CN algorithm can be applied to monitor the preparation of impending earthquakes with M ≥ 3.0 at Mt. We analyse the seismic catalogue of the local earthquakes which occurred at Somma-Vesuvius volcano in the past three decades (1972–2000). The seismicity in this period can be described as composed of a background level, characterised by a low and rather uniform rate of energy release and by sporadic periods of increased seismic activity. Such relatively intense seismicity periods are characterised by energy rates and magnitudes progressively increasing in the critical periods. The analysis of the b value in the whole period evidences a well-defined pattern, with values of b progressively decreasing, from about 1.8 at the beginning of the considered period, to about 1.0 at present. This steady variation indicates an increasing dynamics in the volcanic system. Within this general trend it is possible to identify a substructure in the time sequence of the seismic events, formed by the alternating episodes of quiescence and activity. The analysis of the source moment tensor of the largest earthquakes shows that the processes at the seismic source are generally not consistent with simple double-couples, but that they are compatible with isotropic components, mostly indicating volumetric expansion. These components are shown to be statistically significant for most of the analysed events. Such focal mechanisms can be interpreted as the effect of explosion phenomena, possibly related to volatile exsolution from the crystallising magma. The availability of a reduced amount of high quality data necessary for the inversion of the source moment tensor, the still limited period of systematic observation of Vesuvius micro-earthquakes and, above all, the absence of eruptive events during such interval of time, cannot obviously permit the outlining of any formal premonitory signal. Nevertheless, the analysis reported in this paper indicates a progressively evolving dynamics, characterised by a generally increasing trend in the seismic activity in the volcanic system and by a significant volumetric component of recent major events, thus posing serious concern for a future evolution towards eruptive activity.
