Lattice structures are becoming more commonly used in the design of components for additive manufacturing. This is due to their ability to reduce the weight of manufactured parts, minimize material consumption, and achieve specific properties by modifying their geometry. As the applications of lattice structures continue to evolve, it is essential to determine whether the process parameters used in the PBF-LB (Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion) process for manufacturing these structures should be the same as or different from those used for larger cross-sectional components. An analysis of the existing literature revealed insufficient data on this subject, which inspired this study. Experiments conducted using AISI 316L stainless steel showed that lattice structures can be produced with significantly lower volumetric energy density, while maintaining a high relative material density. In the experiment on lattice structures made of BCCZ and gyroid unit cells, a relative material density of over 99.5% was achieved with a volumetric energy density of approximately 33 J/mm3. These findings are significant for the fabrication of lattice structures. The lower volumetric energy density typically allows for greater geometric accuracy and reduced internal stresses. Against conventional wisdom, corrugated grain boundaries in polycrystalline graphene, grown on Pt(111) surfaces, are shown to exhibit negative friction coefficients and non-monotonic velocity dependence. Using combined experimental, simulation, and modeling efforts, the underlying energy dissipation mechanism is found to be dominated by dynamic buckling of grain boundary dislocation protrusions. The revealed mechanism is expected to appear in a wide range of polycrystalline two-dimensional material interfaces, thus supporting the design of large-scale dry superlubric contacts. This work demonstrates non-Amontons frictional behavior and negative differential friction coefficients at graphene/Pt(111) surface grain boundaries due to dynamic buckling of dislocations, providing vital insights for the design of macroscopic dry superlubric contacts. Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent and heterogeneous in women. Different brain structures might be associated with depressive symptoms and body composition in women with obesity/overweight and normal-/underweight, although the data is limited. The analysis included 265 women from Bialystok PLUS population study, untreated with antidepressive or antipsychotic medications. The subjects underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and body composition analysis. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score was inversely associated with nucleus accumbens volume (β = −0.217, p = 0.008) in women with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, but with insula volume (β = −0.147, p = 0.027) in women with BMI < 25 kg/m2 after adjustment for age and estimated intracranial volume (eTIV). In women with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, nucleus accumbens volume was inversely associated with the percentage of visceral fat and BDI score (β = −0.236, p = 0.012, β = −0.192, p = 0.017) after adjustment for age and eTIV. In women with BMI < 25 kg/m2, insula volume was positively associated with total fat-free mass and negatively with the BDI score (β = 0.142, p = 0.030, β = −0.137, p = 0.037) after adjustment for age and eTIV. The present research used a longitudinal framework to test a model of willingness to communicate (L2WTC), informal digital learning of English (IDLE), and foreign language boredom (FLB) in learning English as a foreign language among 325 Iranian university students attending a course in general English for 4 months via a latent change score mediation (LCSM) model. Overall, model indices showed an acceptable model fit for the LCSM model. There was a significant and positive constant growth in IDLE and L2WTC, a negative constant growth in FLB across four measurements, while the proportional change was significant and negative for all three variables. The significant interindividual and intraindividual differences in patterns of growth across time were found for the three variables. Also, moderate and positive cross-system associations were revealed between IDLE and L2WTC across four measurements. Moreover, moderate and negative cross-system associations were revealed between FLB and L2WTC as well as between IDLE and L2WTC. Furthermore, changes in FLB mediated subsequent associations between changes in IDLE and L2WTC. Phosphorus pentamers (cyclo-P5) are unstable in nature but can be synthesized at the Ag(111) surface. Unlike monolayer black phosphorous, little is known about their electronic properties when in contact with metal electrodes, although this is crucial for future applications. Here, we characterize the atomic structure of cyclo-P5 assembled on Ag(111) using atomic force microscopy with functionalized tips and density functional theory. Combining force and tunneling spectroscopy, we find that a strong charge transfer induces an inward dipole moment at the cyclo-P5/Ag interface as well as the formation of an interface state. We probe the image potential states by field-effect resonant tunneling and quantify the increase of the local change of work function of 0.46 eV at the cyclo-P5 assembly. Our experimental approach suggest that the cyclo-P5/Ag interface has the characteristic ingredients of a p-type semiconductor-metal Schottky junction with potential applications in field-effect transistors, diodes, or solar cells. Although unstable in nature, phosphorus pentamers (cyclo-P5) can be synthesized on a silver surface. Estrogen receptors (ERs) are located in both healthy and neoplastic tissues. The type of estrogen receptor expressed varies depending on its location, tumor type, and species. Estrogen action is mediated by binding to ER and activating the transcriptional and signaling processes that result in the control of gene expression. There are two main types of estrogen receptors: ER alpha (ERα) and ER beta (ERβ). Both receptors are functionally different, they may act antagonistically and are distributed in different tissues but their structure is similar – as they are composed of 5 different domains: A/B, C, D, E, and F. The signaling pathway and hence regulation of the gene expression by ERs is a complex and multifactorial process that involves both genomic and nongenomic actions. In the human reproductive tract, both ERα and β are present, with predominant expression of ERβ, while there are no satisfactory data distinguishing the type of ERs expressed in the canine reproductive tract. In mammary gland neoplasia, a decreased or lacking ERα expression in humans is associated with a poorer prognosis. This is similar to dogs, where higher ERα expression intensity was noted in benign tumors than in carcinomas. In human hematopoietic malignancies, ERβ is a predominant receptor. Selective and non-selective ERβ agonists have an antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic effect on human lymphoma cell lines and may be effective in the therapy of ERβ positive lymphomas and leukemias. In canine lymphoma tissues, none or only marginal expression of ERs was detected over the decades. Dispersal success is crucial for the survival of species in metacommunities. Zooplankton species engage in dispersal through time (i.e., egg bank) and space (i.e., vectors) by means of resting eggs. However, dispersal to patches does not equate to successful colonization, as there is a clear distinction between dispersal rates and successful colonization. We performed a field mesocosm experiment assessing dispersal and colonization success of zooplankton from resting eggs or transport via directional wind/airborne and biotic vectors in the vicinity of three ponds. By using active vs. sterile pond sediments and mesh-covered vs. open mesocosms, we disentangled the two mechanisms of dispersal, i.e., from the egg bank vs. space. We found that for both rotifers and cladocerans, sediment type, mesh cover and duration of the experiment influenced species richness and species composition. The relative contribution of resting stages to dispersal and colonization success was substantial for both rotifers and cladocerans. However, wind/airborne dispersal was relatively weak for cladocerans when compared to rotifers, whereas biotic vectors contributed to dispersal success especially for cladocerans. Our study demonstrates that dispersal and colonization success of zooplankton species strongly depends on the dispersal mode and that different dispersal vectors can generate distinct community composition. Solvent-free extrusion emulsification (SFEE) is a recently developed process for producing submicron particles of high viscosity polymers using a twin-screw extruder without hazardous solvents. Its rate dependency on mixing for catastrophic phase inversion makes the process knowingly sensitive to a variety of variables, included the manner by which it is started up. This study examined how transient dynamics at the beginning affects steady-state operations by varying the time for the surfactant-containing feed stream to reach its setpoint rate into the process, to better understand the mechanism of SFEE. The results showed that the path taken to reaching the setpoint conditions (i.e. transition time) determined process stability and whether successful emulsification occurred, not the actual setpoint conditions chosen. Combining particle size and residence time measurements with prior studies' data related to the rate of reactions benefiting interfacial growth between the polymer/water phases and inline rheological findings, this unusual transient sensitivity was attributed to insufficient surface-active species present creating a persistent segregated regime of the flow field in the first half of the dispersion zone that exhibits an unstable phase morphology. Returning to the desired operating window was only possible once this segregated regime was purged from the process. Cyclic tetrapeptides c(Pro-Phe-Pro-Phe) obtained by the mechanosynthetic method using a ball mill were isolated in a pure stereochemical form as a homochiral system (all L-amino acids, sample A) and as a heterochiral system with D configuration at one of the stereogenic centers of Phe (sample B). The structure and stereochemistry of both samples were determined by X-ray diffraction studies of single crystals. In DMSO and acetonitrile, sample A exists as an equimolar mixture of two conformers, while only one is monitored for sample B. The conformational space and energetic preferences for possible conformers were calculated using DFT methods. The distinctly different conformational flexibility of the two samples was experimentally proven by Variable Temperature (VT) and 2D EXSY NMR measurements. Purpose: P2Y12 receptor inhibitors are drugs that decrease the risk of stent thrombosis and lower the long-term risk of non-stent-related myocardial infarction and stroke. They inhibit the binding of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to the P2Y12 receptor and effectively reduce platelet reactivity. However, considerable variability in the pharmacodynamics response contributes to a failure of antiplatelet therapy; this phenomenon is especially notorious for older drugs, such as clopidogrel. Some genetic polymorphisms associated with these drugs' metabolic pathway, especially in the CYP2C19 gene, can significantly decrease antiplatelet efficacy. There are few reports on the variability stemming from the target of this drug class that is the P2Y12 receptor itself. Results and conclusion: This review summarizes the results of research that focus on the influence of P2Y12 genetic polymorphisms on the pharmacodynamics and the efficacy of P2Y12 inhibitors. We found that the conclusions of the studies are unequivocal, and despite several strong candidates, such as G52T (rs6809699) or T744C (rs2046934), they may not be independent predictors of the inadequate response to the drug. Most probably, P2Y12 genetic polymorphisms contribute to the effect exerted by other gene variants (such as CYP2C19*2/*3/*17), drug interactions, or patient habits, such as smoking. Indoxyl sulfate (IS), an agonist of aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR), can accumulate in patients with chronic kidney disease, but its direct effect on bone is not clear. The present study investigated the effect of chronic exposure to low (100 mg/kg b.w.; 100 IS) and high (200 mg/kg b.w.; 200 IS) dose of IS on bone AhR pathway, sirtuins (SIRTs) expression, oxidative DNA damage and bone mineral status in Wistar rats. The accumulation of IS was observed only in trabecular bone tissue in both doses. The differences were observed in the bone parameters, depending on the applied IS dose. The exposure to 100 IS increased AhR repressor (AhRR)-CYP1A2 gene expression, which was associated with SIRT-1, SIRT-3 and SIRT-7 expression. At the low dose group, the oxidative DNA damage marker was unchanged in the bone samples, and it was inversely related to the abovementioned SIRTs expression. In contrast, the exposure to 200 IS reduced the expression of AhRR, CYP1A, SIRT-3 and SIRT-7 genes compared to 100 IS. The level of oxidative DNA damage was higher in trabecular bone in 200 IS group. Femoral bone mineral density was decreased, and inverse relations were noticed between the level of trabecular oxidative DNA damage and parameters of bone mineral status. Mars is a particularly attractive candidate among known astronomical objects to potentially host life. Results from space exploration missions have provided insights into Martian geochemistry that indicate oxychlorine species, particularly perchlorate, are ubiquitous features of the Martian geochemical landscape. Perchlorate presents potential obstacles for known forms of life due to its toxicity. However, it can also provide potential benefits, such as producing brines by deliquescence, like those thought to exist on present-day Mars. Here we show perchlorate brines support folding and catalysis of functional RNAs, while inactivating representative protein enzymes. Additionally, we show perchlorate and other oxychlorine species enable ribozyme functions, including homeostasis-like regulatory behavior and ribozyme-catalyzed chlorination of organic molecules. We suggest nucleic acids are uniquely wellsuited to hypersaline Martian environments. Furthermore, Martian near- or subsurface oxychlorine brines, and brines found in potential lifeforms, could provide a unique niche for biomolecular evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal carbonization is one of the new ways to produce valuable products from waste materials. The aim of this study was to develop a novel method for the production of hydrochars from brewery residues for agricultural applications. Waste materials treated at 140 °C, 170 °C, and 200 °C were used as a source of renewable nitrogen and as delivery agents of fertilizer microelements (Cu, Mn, and Zn). HTC materials were enriched with nutrients using an innovative spray sorption method. The surface texture was characterized by the nitrogen adsorption technique, functional groups were identified (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis of the materials was performed. Preliminary germination tests have shown phytotoxic effects at doses greater than 20% (relative to plant nitrogen requirements) for unenriched hydrochars. To minimize inhibition of plant growth, air aging tests were conducted for 30 days, followed by successive drying at 110 °C for 72 h. It was observed that the higher the temperature of the carbonization process, the faster the desorption of components in a solution simulating soil conditions (NaNO3) occurs. The pot tests on cucumber (Cornichon de Paris) showed that the biometric parameters of the plant (stem length and root ball parameters) for the hydrochar obtained at 170 °C were higher than in the group fertilized with mineral fertilizer. Twice the fresh plant mass was noted for this group compared to the reference. In addition, the study recorded a particular increase in nitrogen content in plants fertilized with a 150% dose of enriched hydrochar, where the element content increased by about 100% compared to the group with mineral fertilizer applied (100% dose). The study shows that properly prepared hydrochars from brewery waste offer great potential as a nitrogen source and micronutrient delivery agents for the agrochemical sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For a better assessment of hazards related to tsunamis triggered by pyroclastic flows entering water, it is crucial to know and quantify the contribution of the physical parameters involved in the generation of waves. For this purpose, we investigate experimentally the effect of pyroclastic flow density on tsunami generation by considering variably fluidized granular flows denser or less dense than water, referred to as heavy and light granular flows, respectively, by varying the particle density. Qualitative observations show that differences in bulk flow density mainly affect the propagation of granular flows underwater. In contrast, the bulk flow density has little effect on the amplitude of the leading and largest wave. In fact, the wave amplitude is initially similar to the local water depth along the inclined plane, and then reaches a maximum value that depends mainly on the other flow parameters (i.e., velocity, thickness, volume of flows). Far from the shoreline, we provide evidence of the bulk flow density effect on the wave amplitude, while other characteristics of the leading wave remain broadly unaffected in the range of parameters considered. Finally, a main difference on the tsunami generation between light and heavy granular flows is related to the energy distribution between the leading largest wave and the wave train, which is attributed to different modes of interaction of the two flow types with the water. For tsunami hazard assessment, our study suggests that the contribution of the bulk flow density on tsunami generation has a second-order effect compared to other flow parameters. Thaumastocoris peregrinus is an insect pest that causes a reduction in the productivity of Eucalyptus. Control of this insect can be carried out through selection of its less preferred genetic materials. The aim of this research was to evaluate the preferences of T. peregrinus and to associate these with the biochemical composition of six genetic materials of Eucalyptus, collected in an experimental area of the Federal University of Technology - Paraná. Three bioassays were performed: Bioassay 1 conferred the feeding preference of adults of T. peregrinus, through a multiple choice test among the genetic materials; Bioassay 2 evaluated the confinement of the insects, observing the presence of insects, feces, and eggs on the leaves, for a five-day period; Bioassay 3: biochemical analyses were performed on leaves collected from the genetic materials in three different treatments. The preferred genetic material for feeding of T. peregrinus was Clone H-13 and the least preferred was Clone GFMO-27. In the confinement test, the highest percentage of live insects was on Eucalyptus propinqua and the lowest percentage on Eucalyptus pellita × Eucalyptus tereticornis. The biochemical levels of proteins, total and reducing sugars, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity demonstrated specificity regarding changes after 24 h of exposure to T. peregrinus. In Clone H13, there was a greater increase in the activity of the PAL enzyme, demonstrating that there was a defense response on the part of the plant, however, not sufficient to deter the insects. Rationale: In bipolar disorder (BD), immunological factors play a role in the pathogenesis and treatment of the illness. Studies showed the potential link between Abelson Helper Integration Site 1 (AHI1) protein, behavioural changes and innate immunity regulation. An immunomodulatory effect was suggested for lithium, a mood stabilizer used in BD treatment. Objectives: We hypothesized that AHI1 may be an important mediator of lithium treatment response. Our study aimed to investigate whether the AHI1 haplotypes and expression associates with lithium treatment response in BD patients. We also examined whether AHI1 expression and lithium treatment correlate with innate inflammatory response genes. Results: We genotyped seven AHI1 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 97 euthymic BD patients and found that TG haplotype (rs7739635, rs9494332) was significantly associated with lithium response. We also showed significantly increased AHI1 expression in the blood of lithium responders compared to non-responders and BD patients compared to healthy controls (HC). We analyzed the expression of genes involved in the innate immune response and inflammatory response regulation (TLR4, CASP4, CASP5, NLRP3, IL1A, IL1B, IL6, IL10, IL18) in 21 lithium-treated BD patients, 20 BD patients treated with other mood stabilizer and 19 HC. We found significantly altered expression between BD patients and HC, but not between BD patients treated with different mood stabilizers. Conclusions: Our study suggests the involvement of AHI1 in the lithium mode of action. Moreover, mood-stabilizing treatment associated with the innate immunity-related gene expression in BD patients and only the lithium-treated BD patients showed significantly elevated expression of anti-inflammatory IL10, suggesting lithium's immunomodulatory potential. In this study PLA and PHB were melt-blended with/without maleic anhydride (MA) as a compatibilizer and melt-spun into a monofilament. The aquatic biodegradation of PLA/PHB fibers was tracked regarding the PLA and PHB components and the total carbon in the blend. Pure PLA fiber was recalcitrant to aquatic biodegradation in the present conditions, whereas PHB was readily degradable, as expected. The 75/25% and 50/50% PLA/PHB fibers showed zero biodegradation. The 25/75% PLA/PHB blend showed only an 11% final biodegradation extent and a 13% PHB biodegradation extent. It is shown that an unintended consequence of blending PLA with PHB is that after biodegradation, micro/nano plastic pollution is evolved. MA increased the miscibility, which further decreased the PHB biodegradation. The lower biodegradation extent with MA indicates that increased miscibility and more intimate coverage of the biodegradable polymer with the unbiodegradable polymer may have a negative effect on the biodegradation of biodegradable polymers. Introduction: The management of CBDS (common bile duct stones) in patients with co-existing gallbladder stones has been debated. Guidelines recommend patients with CBDS identified on imaging should be offered duct clearance; however, this is based on low-quality evidence. This study aimed to investigate the natural history of small CBDS identified using IOUS (intraoperative ultrasound) in patients undergoing cholecystectomy. This may provide evidence to support a short-term expectant management approach in such patients. Methods: Patients with CBDS diagnosed on IOUS during cholecystectomy were identified from a database of consecutive patients undergoing surgery. Patients with CBDS identified were divided into small stone (SS, ≤5 mm) and large stone (LS, >5 mm) groups. Intraoperative CBDS management, postoperative investigations, postoperative bile duct clearance, re-admissions, complications, length of stay (LOS) and follow-up are described. Results: Fifty-nine of 427 patients had CBDS identified on IOUS. In the SS group (n=51), 46 patients underwent short-term expectant management rather than immediate/planned bile duct clearance. Following short-term expectant management, 41/46 patients (89.1%) did not require postoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and at >3 year follow-up, none has since presented with residual CBDS. Median LOS was 0 days in the short-term expectant management group and 2 days in the immediate/planned bile duct clearance group, P=0.039. Conclusions: This study reports the natural history of small CBDS identified on IOUS in patients undergoing cholecystectomy. Such patients were safely treated with short-term expectant management associated with a reduced hospital LOS. Adsorption of acetazolamide (ACT) and formation of a mixed adsorption layers of acetazolamide (ACT)—sodium 1-decanesulfonate (SDS) and acetazolamide—hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at the R-AgLAFe/chlorates(VII) interface are described. The systems were characterized by the measurements of differential capacity, potential of zero charge, and surface tension at this potential. The adsorption parameters determined in the studied systems indicate the SDS domination in the adsorption equilibria and the competitive adsorption between the ACT—SDS or mixed micelles. Complexes like iron (II)-triazoles exhibit spin crossover behavior at ambient temperature and are often considered for possible application. In previous studies, we implemented complexes of this type into polymer nanofibers and first polymer-based optical waveguide sensor systems. In our current study, we synthesized complexes of this type, implemented them into polymers and obtained composites through drop casting and doctor blading. We present that a certain combination of polymer and complex can lead to composites with high potential for optical devices. For this purpose, we used two different complexes [ Fe (atrz) 3 ] (2 ns) 2 and [ Fe (atrz) 3 ] Cl 1.5 (BF 4) 0.5 with different polymers for each composite. We show through transmission measurements and UV/VIS spectroscopy that the optical properties of these composite materials can reversibly change due to the spin crossover effect. Compounds that exhibit the spin crossover effect are known to show a change of spin states through external stimuli. This reversible switching of spin states is accompanied by a change of the properties of the compound. Complexes, like iron (II)-triazole complexes, that exhibit this behavior at ambient temperature are often discussed for potential applications. In previous studies we synthesized iron (II)-triazole complexes and implemented them into electrospun nanofibers. We used Mössbauer spectroscopy in first studies to prove a successful implementation with maintaining spin crossover properties. Further studies from us showed that it is possible to use different electrospinning methods to either do a implementation or a deposition of the synthesized solid SCO material into or onto the polymer nanofibers. We now used a solvent in which both, the used iron (II)-triazole complex [Fe(atrz)3](2 ns)2 and three different polymers (Polyacrylonitrile, Polymethylmethacrylate and Polyvinylpyrrolidone), are soluble. This shall lead to a higher homogeneous distribution of the complex along the nanofibers. Feedstock properties play a crucial role in thermal conversion processes, where understanding the influence of these properties on treatment performance is essential for optimizing both feedstock selection and the overall process. In this study, a series of van Krevelen diagrams were generated to illustrate the impact of H/C and O/C ratios of feedstock on the products obtained from six commonly used thermal conversion techniques: torrefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, hydrothermal liquefaction, hydrothermal gasification, pyrolysis, and gasification. Machine learning methods were employed, utilizing data, methods, and results from corresponding studies in this field. Furthermore, the reliability of the constructed van Krevelen diagrams was analyzed to assess their dependability. The van Krevelen diagrams developed in this work systematically provide visual representations of the relationships between feedstock and products in thermal conversion processes, thereby aiding in optimizing the selection of feedstock and the choice of thermal conversion technique. Biodegradable materials based on poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and a phenolic free modified rosin resin were obtained and studied to control the biodegradability under composting conditions of the materials. The resin was blended in concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 parts per hundred (phr) of base polymer using industrial plastic processing techniques. Additionally, to study the effect of the resin on the compatibility of the PLA, the physical performance, water absorption, mechanical behavior, thermal stability, and microstructure of the materials were assessed. The resin incorporation decreased the resistance to thermal degradation of the resultant material, and the composting disintegration rate was slowed down with the increasing content of the resin. The water diffusion was delayed, and the diffusion and corrected diffusion coefficients decreased with the rising content of UP. The mechanical properties tend to decrease while a saturation effect was observed for contents higher than 3 phr of resin. Out-of-hospital reduction of shoulder dislocations using the Campell method is recommended by the International Commission for Alpine Rescue and applied in the Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service (Bergwacht Bayern, BWB) protocols. This prospective observational study includes patients out-of-hospital with suspected shoulder dislocation and treated and evacuated by the BWB. Data were systematically collected using three questionnaires: one completed on-site by the rescuer, the second in hospital by the physician and the third within 28 (8–143) days after the accident by the patient. The suspected diagnosis of shoulder dislocation was confirmed in hospital in 37 (84%) of 44 cases. Concomitant injuries in other body regions were found in eight (16%) of 49 cases and were associated with incorrect diagnosis (p = 0.002). Younger age (p = 0.043) and first shoulder dislocation event (p = 0.038) were associated with a higher success rate for reduction attempts. Out-of-hospital reduction of shoulder dislocations leads to significant pain relief and no poorer long-term outcome. Signs that are associated with successful out-of-hospital reduction (younger age and first event), but also those that are associated with incorrect diagnosis (concomitant injuries) should be considered before trying to reduce shoulder dislocation on site. The considerable rate of incorrect first diagnosis on site should give rise to an intensive discussion around teaching and training for this intervention. Behavioural indices are recognised as important criteria for assessing animal welfare. One of the basic animal behaviours included in ethograms is their activity. The assessment of fast-moving animals, performed by humans using the visual observation method, is difficult and not very objective. Therefore, the aim of the research was to develop a method of automated analysis of animal activity, particularly useful in the observation of quick and lively individuals, and to prove its suitability for assessing the behaviour of fast-moving animals. A method of automatically assessing animal activity was developed using digital image analysis, with the Python programming language and the OpenCV library being the foundational tools. The research model was Callimico goeldii monkeys housed in a zoological garden. This method has been proved to correlate well (Rs = 0.76) with the visual method of animal behaviour analysis. The developed automatic evaluation of animal behaviour is many times faster than visual analysis, and it enables precise assessment of the daily activity of fast-moving groups of animals. The use of this system makes it possible to obtain an activity index with sub-second resolution, which allows it to be used in online mode as a detector of abnormal animal activity, e.g. early detection of illnesses or sudden events that are manifested by increased or decreased activity in relation to the standard activity pattern. During the world energy transformation, using some vegetable oils as fuel enables the production of clean and inexpensive energy with the application of the well-known technology of the CI engine. The common rail (CR) fuel system gives many opportunities related to creating an air–fuel mixture and its efficient combustion. Can the system dedicated to diesel oil be used to inject vegetable oil and control its combustion effectively? This paper presents some results of the application of the injection strategy for raw Camelina sativa (CS) oil fueling. The test was conducted on the AVL single-cylinder CI engine equipped with a CR system for engine speed n = 1500 rpm and different excess air coefficients (1.1 < λ < 2.1). The engine parameters and performance obtained for raw CS oil were compared with the results obtained for diesel oil fueling for the same and slightly modified injection strategy. The experiment demonstrated how much the combustion process and its effects differ for these two fuels. The miniaturized Mössbauer-spectrometer (MIMOS II), originally devised by Göstar Klingelhöfer, is further developed by the Renz group at the Leibniz University Hanover in cooperation with the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts. A new processing unit with a two-dimensional (2D) data acquisition was developed by M. Jahns. The advantage of this data acquisition is that no thresholds need to be set before the measurement. The energy of each photon is determined and stored with the velocity of the drive. After the measurement, the relevant area can be selected for the Mössbauer spectrum. Now we have expanded the evaluation unit with a power supply for a MIMOS drive and a MIMOS PIN detector. So we have a very compact MIMOS transmissions measurement setup. A child's body is highly sensitive to air quality, especially regarding the concentration of particulate matter (PM). Nevertheless, due to the high cost of precision instruments, measurements of PM concentrations are rarely carried out in school areas where children spend most of their daily time. This paper presents the results of PM measurements made by a validated, low-cost university air pollution measurement system operating in a rural area near schools. An assessment of children's exposure to PM during school hours (8 a.m.–6 p.m.) at different times of the year was carried out. We show that PM10 concentrations in the air, particularly in winter, often exceeded the alert values of 50 µg m−3, posing a health risk to children, especially when children exercise outside the school building. We also calculated the rate and total PM10 deposition in the respiratory tract during various physical activities performed in clean and polluted air. Monitoring actual PM10 concentrations as presented in this paper, using a low cost sensors, offer school authorities and teachers an opportunity to reduce health risks for children. This study aimed to determine the level of spatial ability among STEM students. A universal multiple-choice test was prepared. The validity of the test and the effectiveness of its application were tested. The test is an extension of those currently in use. It contains tasks on spatial perception, spatial visualization, mental folding, rotation of spatial elements, and representation of spatial elements on a plane. The test consists of 16 tasks showing a cube with lines located on the walls. The student's task was to determine the development of the cube and mentally construct a cube based on the development. The results of the test determined the level of progress of the group (105 participants), and showed that a significant number of students have difficulties in perceiving and working with a three-dimensional object. On average 55% of the questions were answered correctly. For the group tested, reading a flat drawing and determining axonometry proved easier than other task. Students who attended technical high school or had design experience scored better. During the course, measures to improve teaching were introduced. Spatial model work was strengthened and initial tasks were adjusted according to the level of the group. Emphasis on teamwork and consultation was introduced for those with the lowest scores. The applied modifications in classroom management had a good effect. The average of the final grade was B. Bi(III) ions electroreduction in the presence of N-acetylcysteine (ACYS)at the nanostructured R-AgLAFE electrode has been studied by the voltammetric and impedance measurements. The experimental data indicates the multistage character of the electrode process and the catalytic influence of N-acetylcysteine on the Bi(III) ions electroreduction rate. It was found that this process is controlled by the chemical reaction of the Bi(III)–Hg(SR)2 activecomplexes formation on the electrode surface, which mediates electron transfer. Active complexes are a substrate in the process of electroreduction, and their different structure and properties are the reason for the diverse catalytic activity of N-acetylcysteine. Increased grain yield (GY) is the primary breeding target of wheat breeders. We performed the genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 168 elite winter wheat lines from an ongoing breeding program to identify the main determinants of grain yield. Sequencing of Diversity Array Technology fragments (DArTseq) resulted in 19,350 single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and presence-absence variation (PAV) markers. We identified 15 main genomic regions located in ten wheat chromosomes (1B, 2B, 2D, 3A, 3D, 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, and 7B) that explained from 7.9 to 20.3% of the variation in grain yield and 13.3% of the yield stability. Loci identified in the reduced genepool are important for wheat improvement using marker-assisted selection. We found marker-trait associations between three genes involved in starch biosynthesis and grain yield. Two starch synthase genes (TraesCS2B03G1238800 and TraesCS2D03G1048800) and a sucrose synthase gene (TraesCS3D03G0024300) were found in regions of QGy.rut-2B.2, QGy.rut-2D.1, and QGy.rut-3D, respectively. These loci and other significantly associated SNP markers found in this study can be used for pyramiding favorable alleles in high-yielding varieties or to improve the accuracy of prediction in genomic selection. One of the main limitations of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies consists in the relatively low build rate. Low productivity discourages companies from investing in AM machines, thus limiting the market of additive technologies. Machine manufacturers have introduced new solutions to their designs to increase the build rate, some of them are described in this paper. However, design improvements are not the only method to accelerate the process. The paper specifies factors that influence the build rate in the laser powder bed fusion process and provides an analytical assessment and comparison of the significance of how they affect its productivity. The influence that a change in selected parameters has on the process and the influence of multi-laser systems on its productivity are analysed in terms of the melted material quality. The processes from which the data for analysis were obtained were carried out on an SLM 280 machine with single- and dual-laser versions as well as on an SLM 500 with four lasers. Two types of samples, solid and thin-walled, both of the same volume, were tested. The data under analysis were the process times for both geometries, manufactured with different sets of parameters from the adopted range. Processing times were analysed to determine the main effects and interaction effects for extreme values of a given parameter. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease. Its variable course makes it difficult to standardize patient treatment. This article aims at a literature review on available drugs for treating SLE and on drugs that have shown therapeutic effects in this disease. The PubMed/MEDLINE electronic search engine was used to identify relevant studies. This review presents the current therapeutic options, new biological therapies, and combination therapies of biologics with standard immunosuppressive and immunomodulating drugs. We have also underlined the importance to implement the treat-to-target strategy aimed at reducing or discontinuing therapy with glucocorticosteroids (GCs). The awareness of the benefits and risks of using GCs helps in refining their dosage and thereby obtaining a better safety profile. The advent of biological targeted therapies, and more recently, low-molecular-weight compounds such as kinase inhibitors, initiated numerous clinical trials in SLE patients and led to the approval of two biological drugs, belimumab, and anifrolumab, for SLE treatment. Progress in the treatment of SLE was reflected in the 2019 and 2021 recommendations of the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR). Background: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mandate that every US hospital provide public online pricing information for services rendered. This allows patients to compare prices across hospital systems before establishing care. The goal of this project was to evaluate hospital compliance and patient-level accessibility to price transparency for common breast cancer surgical procedures. Methods: A sample case of a 62-year-old female with a T2N0 breast cancer was chosen. The patient would have the option of undergoing a partial mastectomy or mastectomy, both with sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Eight Massachusetts academic medical centers were evaluated. Searches were performed by authors for each hospital system and procedure using the sample case. Results: Every hospital had a cost calculator on its website. The average success rate of establishing a cost for partial mastectomy, mastectomy, and SLNB was 58, 35, and 25%, respectively. The median time to reach the cost calculator tool was 32 s (range 25–37 s). In successful attempts, the median pre-insurance estimated cost of a partial mastectomy was $16,509 (range $11,776–22,169), compared with $24,541 (range $16,921–25,543) for mastectomy and $12,342 (range $4034–20,644) for SLNB. SLNB costs varied significantly across hospitals (p = 0.025), but no statistically significant difference was observed for partial mastectomy or mastectomy. Conclusion: Despite new regulatory requirements by CMS for increased price transparency for surgical procedures, our results demonstrate poor success rates in obtaining cost estimates and significant variability of reported hospital charges. Poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a well-known biodegradable bio-based polymer but can be brittle. Polymer blending of PHB with polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) has been proposed to improve the mechanical properties. Compatibilizers have been considered to improve the performance of the polymer blend with PHB; however, the effect of compatibilizers on biodegradation is controversial. In the present study, the PHB polymer was blended with PP, a non-biodegradable synthetic polymer, and spun into fiber form. Furthermore, the effect of increased interaction between the polymers was investigated by increasing the miscibility with compatibilizer, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP). The biodegradation of PHB in the blends was investigated in aquatic aerobic conditions with a closed respirometer with activated sludge as inoculum. Since PP is not a biodegradable polymer, the PHB-based biodegradation was calculated based on the ratio of oxygen consumption to the theoretical oxygen demand of PHB polymer in the blends. The fibers with a concentration of PHB below 75% showed a significant decrease in PHB biodegradation. This result confirms that non-biodegradable polymers in the blend can hinder the biodegradation of biodegradable polymers. Additionally, this blending is shown herein to have unintended consequences, creating micro and nano pollution of residual synthetic PP material. MAPP has an effect of increasing the miscibility between PP and PHB; however, this increased miscibility rendered the PHB biodegradation to be very low, less than 25%. This result suggests that even though increased miscibility can improve mechanical performance, it can decrease the biodegradation of biodegradable polymers in non-biodegradable/biodegradable polymer blends. Understanding the 3D cerebral vascular network is one of the pressing issues impacting the diagnostics of various systemic disorders and is helpful in clinical therapeutic strategies. Unfortunately, the existing software in the radiological workstation does not meet the expectations of radiologists who require a computerized system for detailed, quantitative analysis of the human cerebrovascular system in 3D and a standardized geometric description of its components. In this study, we show a method that uses 3D image data from magnetic resonance imaging with contrast to create a geometrical reconstruction of the vessels and a parametric description of the reconstructed segments of the vessels. First, the method isolates the vascular system using controlled morphological growing and performs skeleton extraction and optimization. Then, around the optimized skeleton branches, it creates tubular objects optimized for quality and accuracy of matching with the originally isolated vascular data. Finally, it optimizes the joints on n-furcating vessel segments. As a result, the algorithm gives a complete description of shape, position in space, position relative to other segments, and other anatomical structures of each cerebrovascular system segment. Our method is highly customizable and in principle allows reconstructing vascular structures from any 2D or 3D data. The algorithm solves shortcomings of currently available methods including failures to reconstruct the vessel mesh in the proximity of junctions and is free of mesh collisions in high curvature vessels. It also introduces a number of optimizations in the vessel skeletonization leading to a more smooth and more accurate model of the vessel network. We have tested the method on 20 datasets from the public magnetic resonance angiography image database and show that the method allows for repeatable and robust segmentation of the vessel network and allows to compute vascular lateralization indices. Mechanical forces drive critical cellular processes that are reflected in mechanical phenotypes, or mechanotypes, of cells and their microenvironment. We present here "Rupture And Deliver" Tension Gauge Tethers (RAD-TGTs) in which flow cytometry is used to record the mechanical history of thousands of cells exerting forces on their surroundings via their propensity to rupture immobilized DNA duplex tension probes. We demonstrate that RAD-TGTs recapitulate prior DNA tension probe studies while also yielding a gain of fluorescence in the force-generating cell that is detectable by flow cytometry. Furthermore, the rupture propensity is altered following disruption of the cytoskeleton using drugs or CRISPR-knockout of mechanosensing proteins. Importantly, RAD-TGTs can differentiate distinct mechanotypes among mixed populations of cells. We also establish oligo rupture and delivery can be measured via DNA sequencing. RAD-TGTs provide a facile and powerful assay to enable high-throughput mechanotype profiling, which could find various applications, for example, in combination with CRISPR screens and -omics analysis. Severe psychological trauma triggers genetic, biochemical and morphological changes in amygdala neurons, which underpin the development of stress-induced behavioural abnormalities, such as high levels of anxiety. miRNAs are small, non-coding RNA fragments that orchestrate complex neuronal responses by simultaneous transcriptional/translational repression of multiple target genes. Here we show that miR-483-5p in the amygdala of male mice counterbalances the structural, functional and behavioural consequences of stress to promote a reduction in anxiety-like behaviour. Upon stress, miR-483-5p is upregulated in the synaptic compartment of amygdala neurons and directly represses three stress-associated genes: Pgap2, Gpx3 and Macf1. Upregulation of miR-483-5p leads to selective contraction of distal parts of the dendritic arbour and conversion of immature filopodia into mature, mushroom-like dendritic spines. Consistent with its role in reducing the stress response, upregulation of miR-483-5p in the basolateral amygdala produces a reduction in anxiety-like behaviour. Stress-induced neuromorphological and behavioural effects of miR-483-5p can be recapitulated by shRNA mediated suppression of Pgap2 and prevented by simultaneous overexpression of miR-483-5p-resistant Pgap2. Our results demonstrate that miR-483-5p is sufficient to confer a reduction in anxiety-like behaviour and point to miR-483-5p-mediated repression of Pgap2 as a critical cellular event offsetting the functional and behavioural consequences of psychological stress. Electron-vibration coupling is of critical importance for the development of molecular electronics, spintronics, and quantum technologies, as it affects transport properties and spin dynamics. The control over charge-state transitions and subsequent molecular vibrations using scanning tunneling microscopy typically requires the use of a decoupling layer. Here we show the vibronic excitations of tetrabromotetraazapyrene (TBTAP) molecules directly adsorbed on Ag(111) into an orientational glassy phase. The electron-deficient TBTAP is singly-occupied by an electron donated from the substrate, resulting in a spin 1/2 state, which is confirmed by a Kondo resonance. The TBTAP•− discharge is controlled by tip-gating and leads to a series of peaks in scanning tunneling spectroscopy. These occurrences are explained by combining a double-barrier tunneling junction with a Franck-Condon model including molecular vibrational modes. This work demonstrates that suitable precursor design enables gate-dependent vibrational excitations of molecules on a metal, thereby providing a method to investigate electron-vibration coupling in molecular assemblies without a decoupling layer.Electron-vibration coupling is driving advances in molecular electronics, spintronics, and quantum technology. Introduction: Chronic pain is one of the most frequent clinical problems after inguinal hernia surgery. Despite more than two decades of research and numerous publications, no evidence exists to allow for chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) specific treatment algorithms. Methods: This narrative review presents the current knowledge of the non-surgical management of CPIP and makes suggestions for daily practice. Results: There is a paucity for high-level evidence of non-surgical options for CPIP. Different treatment options and algorithms have been published for chronic pain patients in the last decades. Discussion and conclusion: It is suggested that non-surgical treatment is introduced in the management of all CPIP patients. The overall approach to interventions should be pragmatic, tiered and multi-interventional, starting with least invasive and only moving to more invasive procedures upon lack of effect. Evaluation should be multidisciplinary and should take place in specialized centres. We strongly suggest to follow general guidelines for treatment of persistent pain and to build a database allowing for establishing CPIP specific evidence for optimal analgesic treatments. Introduction : Intragastric balloon (IGB) insertion and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) are known to be effective and safe in achieving weight loss. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of a 6-month IGB therapy, a 12-month IGB therapy, and ESG. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the weight loss at IGB (Orbera) removal after 6 months (124 patients), at IGB (Orbera365) removal after 12 months (61 patients) and at 6 and 12 months after ESG (42 and 34 patients, respectively). Postprocedural care, including medication and diet, was the same for all procedures. Results: Mean TBWL in patients undergoing IGB placement for 6 and 12 months and ESG after 6 and 12 months were 15.2, 15.8, 26.5, and 28.7 kg, respectively. There was no significant difference in the mean %TBWL in patients undergoing IGB placement for 6 or for 12 months (15.3% vs. 14.7%, P = 0.7). ESG patients showed a significantly higher mean %TBWL than IGB patients after 6 months (15.3 vs. 19.8, P = 0.005) and 12 months (14.7 vs. 22.5, P < 0.001). Conclusion: All three studied methods were effective for achieving weight loss. However, there was no significant difference between 6-month and 12-month IGB therapies outcomes. Small low-inflow intermittently closed estuaries are common in Mediterranean climates worldwide; however, despite their important contributions to ecosystem services and coastal resilience, their dynamics have been less well studied relative to classical (i.e., deeper, persistent freshwater inflow) estuaries. It is known that infragravity wave propagation into these estuaries can induce strong currents and that closures lead to stagnating flows and declining water quality; however, how the estuarine circulation (tidal and subtidal) dynamically drives and responds to these conditions remains largely unknown. Here we analyze over 4 years of hydrodynamic observations in Los Peñasquitos Lagoon, a low-inflow, intermittently closed estuary in Southern California, to examine wave propagation into the estuary, sill accretion, and the estuarine circulation response over tidal, fortnightly, seasonal, and interannual time scales, providing an unprecedented view as to how these systems respond to changing forcing. Wave observations near the estuary inlet show that wave energy inside the inlet, which contributes to sill accretion, is dependent on water level relative to the sill height and has a tidal variation due to wave-current interactions. Tidal phase averages of conditions during open, pre-closure, spring, neap, and closed conditions highlight the large dynamic range that these estuaries experience. During open, low sill conditions, circulation and stratification are consistent with stratification-induced periodic straining and subtidal exchange varies with the fortnightly cycle as observed in many classical estuaries. However, as the sill grows, tidal circulation weakens and becomes strongly sheared and the subtidal exchange no longer scales with a classical theoretical pressure-friction balance. This method has an impact on crop output and quality. The characteristics of the seed surface and the surroundings have an impact on the kinetics and volume of water absorption by seeds. As a result, modifying the characteristics of a seed's surface is a useful tactic for influencing seed germination. Low-temperature plasma (LTP) treatment of the seed for surface activation is now being researched as an effective pre-sowing technique. This study looked at the effects of LTP on radish (Raphanus sativus) seeds at room temperature for various times. The seed's germination properties, growth parameters, water contact angle (WCA), Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM), and FTIR analysis were examined. WCA and SEM examination revealed a considerable alteration in the seed coat following LTP treatment, which is directly connected to water permeability into the seeds. Similarly, FTIR analysis confirmed that the enhancement of the hydrophilic properties of the seeds following plasma treatment is likely due to the damage of the hydrophobic moieties on the seeds' surface. The LTP treatment improved each germination-related parameter, including the vigor index, chlorophyll content, in-vitro radical scavenging activities, total flavonoid, and phenol in the seedlings. While research has linked alterations in functional connectivity of the default mode (DMN), cognitive control (CCN), and salience networks (SN) to depression and anxiety, little research has examined whether these alterations may be premorbid vulnerabilities. This study examined resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the CCN, DMN, and SN as markers of risk for developing an onset of a depressive or anxiety disorder in adolescents at high familial risk for these disorders. At baseline, 135 participants aged 11–17 completed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, measures of internalizing symptoms, and diagnostic interviews to assess history of depressive and anxiety disorders. Diagnostic assessments were completed again at 9- or 18-month follow-up for 112 participants. At baseline, increased CCN connectivity to areas of the visual network, and decreased connectivity between the left SN and the precentral gyrus, predicted an increased likelihood of a new onset at follow-up. Increased connectivity between the right SN and postcentral gyrus at baseline predicted first episode onsets at follow-up. Altered connectivity between these regions may represent a risk factor for developing a clinically significant onset of an internalizing disorder. The current study aimed to compare the influence of explicit versus implicit instruction on EFL learners' use of interactional metadiscourse markers in their writing. The study also aimed to explore the perceptions of EFL learners on the instruction of these markers in their writing classes. 120 female undergraduates who are Arab EFL learners took part in the investigation. A mixed-methods research design was adopted with an explicit instruction group, an implicit instruction group and a control group. The experimental groups were introduced to a set of interactional metadiscourse markers as per Hyland's (2005) interaction model in two 70-minute sessions. Additionally, the experimental groups completed two post-experimental questionnaires. The results of analysis of variance showed a positive, albeit very limited, influence for the explicit/implicit teaching with the markers of self-mentions, appeals to shared knowledge, directives and questions. As for the participants' perception of the instructional intervention, the participants viewed both explicit and implicit instruction as helpful but could not always apply what they had learned due to task demands. The results are discussed in light of the existing literature and the specific context in which the study was implemented. Furthermore, implications for writing pedagogy are proposed.
